Preps Love Labs, Why Doesn’t Westminster?

Hello-Hello, happy new week to everyone.

Today we focus on four-legged family members. Canine fans are aware the Westminster Dog Show finals get underway this evening.  Officials have spent the day judging individual breeds, tonight winners will be selected from four groups: Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups. Below, Beagles being shown at last year’s event.

At any rate, today’s Journal has a story titled Everybody Loves Labradors, So Why Are They Underdogs?, examining why no Labs have won Best in Show in the 136 years of Westminster.

For the past 22 years, the Labrador Retriever has been the most popular dog breed in the U.S., tying the Poodle’s record reign atop American Kennel Club registrations.

The Labrador hasn’t even made it out of the Sporting group to sniff at Westminster’s grand prize. In other words, Labradors are the Chicago Cubs of show dogs: the most lovable of four-legged losers.

Some believe “flashier breeds” may hold more appeal for judges. Below, two Neopolitan Bull Mastiffs competing in this year’s show.

Others say part of the problem could be the breed standard. (That is what the dogs are judged on, not against each other, but how well they meet the very strict standards.) Back to Ben Cohen’s story:

In 1994, when the Labrador Retriever Club developed the standard to be implemented by the AKC, it was so contentious that six breeders sued. The case lasted six years and ended when their attempts to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court were unsuccessful.

Yikes, that is some serious disagreement!

Last year’s winner of Best in Show was Malachy, a Pekingese.

The WSJ story quotes a woman who owns an award-winning lab, her theory about why the breed hasn’t won also makes sense.

Her theory for the Labrador’s dry spell: other dogs have waged better campaigns. Show-dog owners can burn six-figure fortunes by advertising in trade publications and traveling to shows across the country. Along the way, Ms. Ammerman said, they hope their dogs gain a higher profile. “Pure, simple politics,” she said.

On an up note, Labs are probably easier to take care of than many of the ‘sexier’ breeds.

Another very popular breed that has never won: Golden Retrievers.

Tilly always felt she was Best in Show-worthy.  We didn’t have the heart to tell her the odds probably weren’t in her favor. (Something to do with that tummy, my word, it looks like she swallowed a volleyball!)

For those who want to watch, the show is on 8-11pm EST on CNBC this evening, tomorrow night it airs on the USA network.

More from NY Magazine’s story:

On Saturday night, while fashion people were all worrying about which Fashion Week party to go to, a different style-obsessed crew was at the New Yorker Hotel. There, at the first annual NYC Doggies & Tiaras Pageant, cake-faced humans flaunted their long-suffering dogs in three categories: activewear, talent, and glamour.

Happy Birthday Kate Spade!

Hello-Hello! Today we are doing a OTT (One Topic Tuesday), business and volunteer obligations make brevity necessary. The theme of our post? Kate Spade, the brand is celebrating its 20th anniversary,

It doesn’t seem that long ago the company arrived on the fashion scene.  I love the backstory on how the brand was born, more from this Women’s Wear Daily piece.

Before they were Kate Spade the brand, the Spades were college sweethearts from the Midwest, she from Kansas City and he from Arizona. They came to New York after graduation to pursue fashion and advertising.

Below, Kate and Jack Spade.

Back to Jessica Iredale’s story:

One night over dinner at their favorite Mexican restaurant on the Upper West Side, they were talking business ideas and “Andy said, ‘Why don’t you do handbags? You love handbags, accessories,’ ” recalled Kate. “And I said, ‘It’s not like you can just start a handbag company.’ And he’s like, ‘Well, why not?’ ”

One of my favorite things about the brand – it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

For those who enjoy the brand’s scents, here is a peek at the new one, “Live Colorfully,” launching in April.

There will also be a capsule collection of clothing tied to the perfume.

The company has also licensed its name for a number of endeavors, including home goods.

Your trusty scribe remains extremely rather fond (ahem) of Kate Spade shoes and handbags.

In an interesting marketing twist, there will also be a Live Colorfully capsule clothing collection. One FYI for those in a shopping frame of mind, the company is doing one of its online only flash sales.

We can only hope Kate Spade is around for at least another twenty years, that would be a lovely thing.

Spring Surfing, A New Style of “Mommy & Me”

Hello-Hello, and welcome to a Friday, where once again we are seeing gray, gloomy skies. It is after all, February in The Great Midwest.

The abundance of dreary days spurred a spot of online window shopping this week, as we sought out some bright and vibrant hues. Fortunately, the springtime fashions are arriving in stores and online, so we were able to indulge in dreams of sunny skies and warmer temps. While looking at the styles we noted the preponderance of patterned sweaters that are made of printed fabric, as opposed to the pattern being woven into the material.

We have several examples of the technique, starting with Bean’s Lightweight Printed cardigan ($59.95). The material is described as “premium pima cotton for silky softness, nylon for extra durability and a bit of Lycra® elastane for a consistent fit”.

LL Bean Printed Cardigans

Many of us grew up wearing sweaters with the pattern woven into the garment, like these, also from Bean. The handknit Fair Isle ($199) is seen on the left, the iconic Norwegian sweater ($139) is on the right.

LL Bean

LL Bean

More examples of the printed sweaters, a springy style from J. McLaughlin. This is the Durango Sweater ($155), also printed (and in a lovely selection of color palettes!). It is a cotton/modal blend with a touch of spandex.

J. McLaughlin

Talbots’ cardigans are often a blend of 60% cotton/40% rayon. It is a comfortable mix of fibers, I have one and it has worn well. Below left, the Tapestry Paisley Cardigan.

Talbots

Talbots

Lilly Pulitzer also offers printed cardigans.

Lilly Pulitzer

Someone here at the Prepatorium has several has seen these in person (cough-cough), the newer technique allows patterns that are more intricate and detailed, and colors that are rich and bold.  Initially I wasn’t crazy about the method, but gradually have come to like it, deciding there is room in the closet for both styles. Does anyone else have strong feelings about the fabric…good, bad, never noticed?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Another style we have noticed more this spring, the knit blazer. Below we show it as interpreted by Brooks Brothers.

Brooks Brothers

Brooks Brothers

Talbots also offers a knit jacket, this is the Ponté knit Colorblocked Jacket (149).

Talbots Ponte Knit Blazer

Talbots Ponte Knit Blazer

And here we see LL Bean’s version, the Comfort Knit Blazer ($49.95).

LL Bean

LL Bean

It brings to mind an old theory of mine: as a rule, if the word ‘comfort’ is in the name of a garment, it’s unlikely to be terribly chic or elegant. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but when viewing the gray version, in particular, the look goes a bit downhill.

Knits can be a beautiful thing, especially when traveling. Talbots has multiple pieces in the Ponté knit fabric shown above, arguably several would work on a business trip. The freedom from wrinkles alone make the textile meritorious of inclusion in many a wardrobe. But the knit blazer….? Below, Old Navy’s version ($34.94).

Old Navy

Old Navy

Observations? The jackets with patterns and/or tipping (the contrasting color edges seen on the Brooks Brothers & Talbots pieces) seem less offensive than the solid colors. Also, gray looks rather ghastly, reminiscent of sweatshirts and yoga pants. Again, nothing bad about those items in one’s closet, they have a place. It’s just similar material turned into a blazer looks very odd to yours truly.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The final trend we noticed when surfing through some of our favorite sites, color blocking.

Via LilyWhiteClothing.com

Via LilyWhiteClothing.com

We see it in Lilly’s Heidi Cardigan ($148).

As well as J. Crew’s Colorblock Cardigan ($89.50).

And Kate Spade’s Colorblock Tees ($68).

As Lilly notes in describing its Irene Dress (below left), “We’re on a colorblock kick!” The frock on the right is the Colorblock Tiff Dress from Kate Spade ($358), on the far right, Kate Spade’s Colorblock Blanche Dress ($498).

More examples: the Long Sleeve Sunshirt in Caribbean ($78), Stretch Perfect Shirt in Hydrangea ($88), and Boys’ Pullover in Spearmint ($49.50), all from J. Crew.

J. Crew

I have long been fond of this style (in moderation), it adds zip to garments that usually have clean lines and minimal embellishment.

Our final tidbit today has nothing to do with dressing humans, but rather, feline fashions. Behold, United Bamboo’s 2013 Cat Calendar.

Why are we so crazy about it? It is all about the sartorial selections of those starring in the pages of the Calendar.
