Preppish Bits & Bytes and the Ultimate Preppy Sleeping Bag

Hello-Hello!

Frequent readers know we are prone to veering off the straight and narrow at times, detouring from Brooks Brothers Avenue and Talbots Lane to another road altogether, taking a peek at brands with classic pieces but perhaps lacking a prep pedigree.

In our look at not-so-common brands we have two offerings today, beginning with Katherine Hooker.

We enjoy the designer’s Ascot Dress.

We are also fond of these two looks; the blouse looks simply exquisite.

This designer is primarily available in the UK, although Ms. Hooker has done trunk shows stateside.

Also, the Irish Times offers this look at UK retailer ASOS in “Preppy Meets Tomboy“:

From the story:

“This is exactly the kind of preppy attire I would dress myself in, if I weren’t entirely committed to wearing dresses and floral fabrics 24/7…”

The feature showcases several looks in more detail.

This retailer already offers online ordering to the USA, but reports are the process will be made even easier in the near future.

We have a number of Bits & Bytes to share:

  • Vampire Weekend, the über-prep band, announced this summer’s tour dates, click here for the schedule.
  • Sad news for our friends in Charleston, Saks is closing its store in that beautiful city. The store will be closed by July 17; the space will be taken by Forever 21. (Ouch.)
  • Those wanting to stay in touch with goings-on related to the upcoming publication of True Prep may want to consider joining the Facebook site for the book.

Today’s Pretty in Pink…and Green comes to us via the always-on-top-of-things folks at the Pink and Green Scene.

via PinkandGreenScene.com

It really is the ultimate sleeping bag for one crazy for pink and green, let alone a great Adventure in Argyle as well! The bag is simply adorable.

Finally today (with apologies to our FB fans), we close with one of the best cross-country tours we’ve seen:

Courtesy LL Bean

That would be the giant-sized official LL Bean boot, heading out of Oklahoma as we type, on its way to Indianapolis.  We are more familiar with the boot in this setting.

Pop over and visit the Bean Facebook page to see the whole story about the Boot Road Trip.

We just want to know if there are tee-shirts with all of the tour dates listed on the back, like those seen at rock concerts…?

On that note, until next time!

Brooks Brothers & the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval?

Hello-Hello and happy start to the new week!

Let us ponder the relationship between the Brooks Brothers cashmere cardigan….

and the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval?

But of course, silly Princess! We didn’t realize testing was done on cashmere sweaters by the folks at Good Housekeeping!  The Brooks Brothers sweater was described:

“…aced both the construction and fabric-weight tests…it’s one flaw: moderate pilling.”

Oops.  Testers appeared to favor the Ann Taylor V-Neck Cashmere Sweater:

(Ummm… might we just interject that this Ann Taylor sweater is now running about $52?)

We get a teeny bit confused by the description of results for a few of the sweaters (Land’s End and LL Bean are included), not clear about the pilling on a few. Those categorized as Not-So-Good include Kohl’s Apt. 9 Cashmere Crewneck for Misses, a shame as their argyle sweater looked cute!

Also scoring poorly were two sweaters from Macy’s Charter Club.

We have chatted previously about all of the fun events surrounding Barbie’s 50th Anniversary, most recently last Saturday. We neglected to mention the very grown-up cosmetic collection Barbie is getting as part of her anniversary celebration! Mattel has partnered with Stila Cosmetics; below, some of the products in the Foxy Doll collection:

Mattel did a Barbie collaboration with MAC cosmetics in 2007.  According to the story in WWD, this collection will be a limited edition, available at select Sephora stores and Sephora.com.  Four different dolls will be featured, including Ponytail Barbie from 1959, Foxy Doll, the first African-American Barbie, Malibu Barbie and Jewel Doll.  (Of course, discussion of anything related to Barbie is quite difficult for TP, related to the childhood Barbie trauma that we explained in this post; do scroll to the bottom if you glance at it.)

Frequent readers may recall a post back in September, Another ‘How to be Preppy Guide,” featuring insight from the wise folks writing the Style section over at Complex.  In a Friday story they point out the attributes of the classic pea coat:

“…. “so-called “pea coats” have become associated with preppy blueblood types, but their roots are much more rugged. The classic American style is actually based on Britain’s Royal Navy Jacket, which was designed to help sailors withstand the brutal conditions of the high seas without getting tangled in the mess of sails and ropes. Before long, the American Navy adopted it as its own.”

Complex also shares info about a great deal, Schott NYC’s Melton Wool pea coat:

This fabulous creation is available in several colors, including black, grey, and navy. Schott is family-owned; all of their products are made in the USA, and they are outstanding investments.  Obviously this is an upgrade from the Isaac Mizrahi pink pea coat at Target we shared just a few days ago.

We close today with a fun “revision” to the back cover of The Preppy Handbook:

House of Cassette

House of Cassette

It is difficult to discern the text, but the photos probably tell you everything you need to know. The “new back cover” includes some choice writing:

“Consider the ascendance of Gossip Girl’s upper east side snot Chuck Bass…and the steady resurgence of populist-prep label J. Crew…”

There are also mentions of Kanye West, described as ‘the Fresh Prince of Nantucket’, Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg, and preppy band Vampire Weekend.

We hope everyone enjoys a simply splendid week!

Preppy Vampire Weekend Going Goth for Cape Cod?

Welcome to another day at the Prepatorium, where we must acknowledge our lack of familiarity with the primary subject of our post, the preppy pop-rockers Vampire Weekend. (Other than our previous post about the band back in April of this year.)

At any rate, their current music video, Oxford Comma, again shows them in their standard fare of buttondown shirts, polo shirts, chinos, jeans, and even a cardigan sweater. The über-preppy former Columbia students worked on their next music video over the weekend and apparently this one is a little different thematically from the previous three. The song they are doing the video for, Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, has lyrics referencing Louis Vuitton and Benetton, among other things.

The boys in the band and a whole lot of other folks spent part of the weekend shooting the video on the Jersey shore. According to a report on the VH-1 website:

“the longest shoot we’ve done” — they were decked out in standard-issue VW gear: Polo, Lacoste, Sperry. Even I rocked J.Crew threads. But not for long.

Quite the look, don’t you think? If you are not familiar with the lyrics to the song, here they are, compliments of MetroLyrics.com. Should you desire ringtones, hypothetically you acquire them free at the site.

As a young girl
Louis Vuitton
With your mother
On a sandy lawn

As a sophomore
With reggaeton
And the linens
You’re sitting on

Is your bed made?
Is your sweater on?
Do you want to
Like you know I do

But this feels so unnatural
Peter Gabriel too

Can you stay up
To see the dawn
In the colors
Of Benetton?

Is your bed made
Is your sweater on
Do you want to
Like you know I do

But this feels so unnatural
Peter Gabriel too

Is your bed made
Is your sweater on
Do you want to
Like you know I do

The group has not yet played anywhere on the Cape; when doing their story, MTV asked about that and here’s how they wrote it:

“It doesn’t look like it’s gonna be this summer, and in some ways that serves them right,” Koenig said. “Because we tried last summer for Cape Cod but, you know, nobody wanted us at the time. We hope to get there at some point.”

C’mon, P-town, Wellfleet, Hyannis — get it together!

Now since we mention Benetton, TP just had to pop into their site, which still is not shoppable online. Honestly. However, once inside and comfortably grazing, look what we found:

All we can tell you is its name, the Beatle, and that it is available in four colors: fuchsia, black, lime, and orange. It also comes in four different sizes. The Princess is absolutely transfixed by it. Translated? Whilst in the big city by the large lake this week we may need to go hunting for it and its siblings. There is nary a word about the material from which it is made in the non-descriptive description on Benetton’s site, so really, we’re merely going on an investigatory mission. Nothing more. Honest.

An ‘Official’ Preppy Band?

Anyone here enjoy the music of Vampire Weekend, or at least like them enough to defend them to the end? We’ve not yet had the pleasure of seeing them in person, but through the magic of the internet we were able to listen a little today and were somewhat nonplussed.  Our only link to the band comes via a columnist at the Sun-Times (Chicago), who suggests they are ideally suited to be the Official Preppy Band.” This via a blistering story, or perhaps a review, in the paper Friday entitled: “Look, Muffy, a band for us” with a subhead (2nd headline) “Preppy pretension sucks musical blood out of VAMPIRE WEEKEND.” Okay then. Did I hear “Bitter, party of one?” from the maître d’ blogLand?
