“Are You a Jackie or a Marilyn?” & Bestselling Author Pamela Keogh

Hello-Hello, and Happy Friday. This seemed like a long week, was it that way for anyone else?

We have a special treat today, a visit with bestselling author Pamela Keogh, most recently noted for writing this outstanding book.

Gotham Books

Are You A Jackie or A Marilyn? Timeless Lessons On Love, Power and Style is simply wonderful, far deeper than one may initially think.  Some Princess readers are already familiar with Ms. Keogh for many of her previous works, including Audrey Style and Jackie Style.

Audrey Style @ amazonJackie Style at Amazon

The author was kind enough to fit us into her busy schedule for an interview, so we move back to her latest work with a snippet from the publisher’s description of the new book:

“Any woman who has aspired to Marilyn’s sultry allure or Jackie’s unstoppable elegance (or who wants to balance sexy and serious) will love these entertaining lessons on channeling your inner Jackie or Marilyn in any situation, from throwing a dinner party to penning a love note.”

The volume begins with a quiz (more on this shortly) and then moves into more detailed looks at everything from how the two cultural icons approached fashion and personal style, to interpersonal relationships.  The book isn’t limited to comparing and contrasting the two women, there are also surprising tidbits, e.g., we had nary a clue that Jackie Kennedy Onassis donated money to help fund the Ms. magazine launch in the early 1970s, or that Marilyn Monroe was a big fan of the hand-written note.

Ms. Keogh is more than well-suited for the task, as she is herself attended Vassar like the former First Lady.  In addition to chatting about the book, we asked the author how she felt the two women would handle today’s electronic and technological intrusions into every facet of one’s life.

“Jackie would have loved Facebook for the JFK Library, and would have used it to keep in touch while also keeping everyone at bay. And she would have shopped, absolutely, at sites like Net-a-Porter, Gilt, Chanel. But her email address would be like the nuclear code, probably three people would have had her email address.

“They both had somewhat addictive personalities, Marilyn would lose a lot of stuff, probably leave her phone in the back of a cab. She would use Facebook to stay in touch with her fans, she had an obsessive need for publicity, Facebook would have been perfect for that.”

The two women are transcendent in stature and continue to influence today’s culture; we asked Ms. Keogh how she thought they would fit into a society obsessed with celebrities. (The talented author’s response even referenced one of our original Anti-Preps!)

“Their attractiveness came from their accomplishments.  They were both very dignified women, they would *not* have done reality shows. Neither one of them would have done endorsements of things, unless maybe Marilyn Monroe was asking people to donate to something like the ASPCA.

They both also had mystique and you don’t have mystique when you’re followed around by TV cameras. [Marilyn] wasn’t like Kim Kardashian.”

One of the nicest things about the book has to be the exquisite illustrations by Meg Hess.

If the style looks familiar, it may be because Ms. Hess has also done covers for all of Candace Bushnell’s books, among other commissions.

We also spoke of designers the women might favor should they still be with us today. Ms. Keogh believes Jackie Kennedy Onassis would still be sporting Oscar de la Renta, perhaps Ralph Rucci, others creating classic, good-looking fashions.  She thinks Marilyn Monroe would be wearing Alexander McQueen were she twenty years old today, but in reality, probably more dignified labels like Valentino.  As with other assertions made during our conversation, her observations in this arena were spot-on.

The conversation on fashion delved into the issue of sizing and how we perceive ourselves relevant to that topic:

“American women get so obsessed with a number on a scale. A number is a number, it doesn’t give you beauty, or humor, or grace.”

Ms. Keogh again spoke of a vital element woven throughout the lives of both women, something sadly missing from the resumes of many or today’s most idolized individuals:

“What holds us to them is what they did, their grace and style, the way they kept going in spite of what was going on in their lives, their indomitable spirit.”

We can only offer an amen to that sentiment. Perhaps the most amazing thing we learned in our conversation with the author is that prior to her death Jackie Kennedy Onassis spent hour after hour in front of her fireplace, burning correspondence, piles of it. That is one way to ensure that private matters remain just that.

Back to the quiz mentioned above, Vanity Fair carried a copy of the questions – here is a small sample.

1. DURING TIMES OF STRESS, YOU …

a) go for a walk on the beach.

b) meditate.

c) pour gin in your tea.

9. IN YOUR OPINION, MONEY IS …

a) everything.

b) no, we mean it—everything.

c) not that important—as long as you have a roof over your head and Veuve Clicquot in the fridge, you’re cool.

Click here for the quiz and you can start exploring which woman you most closely resemble.

A New Member Named to the AntiPrep Wall of Shame

Hello-Hello!

How happy are we all that it is Friday? Really a very silly sentiment, particularly when one considers the holiday-shortened week, honestly.

This is definitely a “when it rains it pours,” situation; we go weeks without any Gossip Girl news and then suddenly it seems we have almost-daily happenings! Today we share updates on two of the show’s more notable stars, seen Wednesday at the gala hosted by Valentino at Château de Wideville, the retired designer’s home.  Women’s Wear Daily covered the festivities, below we see their photo of Blake Lively with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Stephane Feugere/WWD

The party is the traditional conclusion for Paris couture week, and as one can see, the Château is an inspired location for the gathering.

Stephane Feugere/WWD

Another G2 star, Leighton Meester, is seen at the party with designer Marc Jacobs.

We love this image of Lee Radziwill on the left; on the right we see Jane Fonda with the host.

Definitely the place to be for the fashion crowd on Wednesday night.

One other Gossipy note, the show continues shooting in Paris for the new season, below we see both Ms. Lively and Ms. Meester on the set.

Our other television related item involves Mad Men‘s costume designer, Janie Bryant and her upcoming clothing collection for QVC.

The line won’t be available until the end of September, but Women’s Wear Daily (subscription req’d.) had courtesy images of several styles, including the two above.  We like the coat on the left (and actually have a very similar vintage piece) but feel lukewarm on the other items.

Next, our first look at the Keds – Gap collaboration, below we see the Womens’ styles.

We do have news of a new AntiPrep. Can you guess who or what or why?

Bruce Weber for Abercrombie via Fashionista.com

Word that Abercrombie and Fitch is bringing back its catalog prompts the addition to the AntiPrep Wall of Shame.

The company announced last week that its racy catalog, gone for the last seven years, is returning this month. Fashionista has the story, and some photos: “Exclusive: Inside the New (and Very Naked) A&F Quarterly“. The picture shown above is about the only one safe enough for today’s post.

Other news about the retailer concerns bugs, more specifically bedbugs.  Last week an infestation of the creepy critters closed both a Hollister store and an Abercrombie in the city.

Image via Racked.com

The witty minds at Racked came up with the image seen above, we couldn’t resist sharing it.  Both stores have since reopened, but NY magazine asks if the Hollister problem is really solved in this interview with an expert on the topic:

We also just learned that Abercrombie on the Seaport has bedbugs, too. What does that say about the problem?
The worst-case scenario is one of their warehouses had it. And if that’s the case, that’s frightening, you know what I mean? Because you’re not just talking about a few stores anymore. But I think it’s actually really scary that it’s more than one location. They have so many employees at Hollister and we don’t know whether any of them have it at home or not.”

Absolutely. Hideous.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you something a tad more upbeat.

Next Target Designer & Another Argyle Adventure

Hello-Hello and Happy Spring Fever! It is so fantabulous we are officially decreeing today as…..

… Prepalicious, the feeling is utter bliss here at the Prepatorium; we hope the same can be said for your corner of the globe.

We start with news of the next designer collaboration for Target. The Boutique will offer another jewelry line, this one in tandem with the oh-so-wonderful Anna Sheffield, perhaps better known to some readers as the designer of Bing-Bang jewelry.

The Anna Sheffield for Target Collection launches August 30; it will be online and in stores through December 30.  Last year the designer teamed up with Urban Outfitters for a line. Below, a cuff currently in the Bing-Bang group.

Additionally, Miss Sheffield’s Hobo Bag was featured last year on Gossip Girl.

GOSSIP GIRLsophia1

In addition to her own website, Ms. Sheffield’s work is available at Intermix, Shopbop and other retailers.

Speaking of Gossip Girl… we have a few updates for readers, starting with news that actress Leighton Meester has officially signed a record deal, with an album release expected this fall. We are more-than-tardy mentioning a fashion spread featuring Ms. Meester in the NY Times magazine.

The Moment blog also has a story with the 23-year-old that fans may enjoy reading.

People has an interesting online update pegged to Monday’s return of Michele Trachtenberg’s character (Georgina Chapman) to the UES. One thing addressed in the story is what seems to be finds an incredibly high rate of intra-cast romantic relationships:

““I haven’t tasted or drank the love potion yet because I’m actually not dating anyone from the set,” Trachtenberg jokingly said. “But we all roll up with Red Bull in the morning, so maybe there is something in there.”

“With Ed Westwick dating Jessica Szohr, Leighton Meester meeting boyfriend Sebastian Stan on the set and lovebirds Blake Lively and Penn Badgley still going strong, Trachtenberg admits it’s usually only a matter of time before costars hook up.”

Of course.

Just to prove we retain our capacity to cope with late-breaking news, we offer the latest for your consideration:

There is more in this article from The Daily Mail. Oh, what exactly does this have to do with preppiness, other than the possibility that is a Burberry scarf? Nothing.  Not a thing, dolls, we apologize.

There you have it.

We have an interesting Argyle Update today, if only because of the individual sporting the argyle:

PHOTO: Kevin Lamarque/Reuters

PHOTO: Kevin Lamarque/Reuters

Yesterday First Lady Michelle Obama was wearing another Junya Watanabe argyle cardigan. Does it look familiar? Readers may recall Mrs. Obama in another colorful sweater by the designer during the G2 trip to Europe in early April; if not, this post may be of assistance.

The designer is no stranger to argyle, it is one of the reasons we are drawn to his creations. Below, a vest from this spring’s Comme des Garcon collection for Colette.  But prepettes also know it’s not exactly Brooks Brothers standard issue.

Again the First Lady looks beautiful. We love the bright colors in her cardigan. However (you just knew this was coming) we are simply never going to adapt to daytime sequins despite intense counseling from the Fashion Herald and Wendy. We’re constitutionally incapable. It Just. Will. Not. Happen.

We close today with a look at some of Kenneth Paul Block’s amazing fashion illustrations. First, “Babe Paley in Mainbocher and Amanda Burden in Sarni

Mr. Block created magnificent drawings for W and WWD as the principle in-house illustrator for Fairchild Publications, frequently using members of the ‘jet set’ as subjects. Below, Jackie Kennedy Onassis in a Valentino jumpsuit.

The artist also did numerous illustrations for upscale retailers like Bonwit Teller, Bloomingdale’s  and Bergdorf’s. In March Mr. Block donated almost 1900 drawings to the MFA in Boston.  For a real treat, pop over to the Museum’s Textile and Fashion Arts Facebook page and gaze upon the fabulosity. One can also check out Drawing Art: The Fashion of Kenneth Paul Block at their local library or consider adding it to their personal library.

Mr. Block passed away last week; he was 84.

A Manly Take on Fashion Week & Another Gossip Girl Preppy Look

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday! The Princess is ever-so-pleased to welcome a weekend after playing catch-up most of the week from our mini-vacation.

We are most assuredly ready for some Friday Fun. With that pleasant prospect in mind we start with a quick hit we would almost consider “must reading” for its entertainment value: Time magazine’s column on Fashion Week. A sample:

[F]ashion shows are the most serious events in the entire world. Nobody in the audience smiles or talks; the models look like they’re on the Bataan death march; and people slowly, lifelessly clap at the end. I’ve been to political panels, criminal trials, locker rooms of playoff losers, graduate English classes and the Ron Paul convention, and I’ve never seen people take themselves quite this seriously.”

Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images for IMG

Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images for IMG

The writer is the talented Joel Stein who may need his own bodyguard after writing this:

“Vogue editor Anna Wintour, whom I vaguely knew as the lady who wears Prada and is remarkably similar to the Devil, has two bodyguards–that’s how serious fashion is. I’ve interviewed a lot of celebrities, and you know who had bodyguards? Nobody.”

Fashion Week is too fun

If already planning to visit the Time site, one might want to read their review of the new Candace Bushnell novel “One Fifth Avenue,” a title we have mentioned in previous posts.

Already talking about fashion does allow us to segue right into our next topic, an interesting quote from this week’s Gossip Girl as uttered by the character Blair:

“Are those Tory Burch’s last-season flats?”

We presume it was spoken in horror (oh the shame of wearing last season’s styles) but were also pondering the fact that prior to this primetime hit it is difficult to conceive of dialogue written that specifically about a designer, or playing a role of this importance in a plotline. (Full disclosure: TP did not watch the show but simply saw the quote so many places we felt compelled to share it with those who are fans.)

So, in our apparently never-ending “How to Dress Like Gossip Girl” category we have four quick pieces from a wonderful column by The Chic Spy. The primary style statement is the Sonia Rykiel blazer. Cropped shorter than what one is likely to find at Brooks Brothers, and with oversized (the Queen Mother’s translation: loud) buttons, the double-breasted blazer is available at Net-a-Porter.

The other important piece is one that would send TP into a Logophobic coma were it not for the smelling salts, the the Burberry wraparound check kilt, complete with fringe, brass pin and double side buckles. The kilt, made in Scotland, has a velcro closure inside the waist. Velcro. Indeed.

Should the look be one that you find appealing, the skirt is available in an almost identical style in Girl’s Sizes 2-14 on the Burberry website.

The Spy also showcases Nanette Lepore pumps and the Be & D “Kan Kan Tote” available for pre-order on the website. If that brand sounds familiar, it may be you are remembering Be and Steve’s insanely popular Garbo handbag from last year. And if not a G2 fan, stop by and visit The Spy for some simply delightful reading.

On the topic of reading, here is one addition to the Fall reading list you may enjoy, definitely a ‘must’ for us: Valentino: Themes and Variations by Pamela Golbin.

Themes and Variations" by Pamela Golbin

The book was released earlier this month and it looks just stunning and with Rizzoli as the publisher you know the quality will be top-notch.

Do enjoy!

The Pirate over the Preppy, Sharapova’s Next Dress…?

Hello-Hello! This afternoon’s Wimbledon final is to blame for our incredibly late post, with ‘The Preppy,’ Roger Federer facing “The Pirate,” Rafael Nadal. (For more on those appelations see our post of June 24th.) Perhaps the cloud should have been an omen…

But first, are we feeling a little more rested, relaxed, and ready to go? Or did we turn into an ogre-like crankenstein heading back into the city when traffic became a little backed up on the LIE? Or on the Dan Ryan from New Buffalo or Holland? Don’t tell us you let the residual cleanup from Harborfest get you grinding your molars coming in from the Cape? Shame on you. Life could be worse:

(That statement was about as deep as the puddles at SW19 today during the rain. Perhaps Daddy was right about the sun baking my brain.)

It was one for the record books, leaving Mr. Federer as one of the world’s more despondent professional athletes this evening; we have a feeling he will bounce back, perhaps sooner than even he thinks. He has nothing to be ashamed of after today’s epic match at Centre Court.

A big Princess grosgrain ribbon bow and congratulations to The Pirate, utterly charming as he clambered about the court after the win in his efforts to reach family members for an emotional hug before proceeding to the Royal Box to greet Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain.

He then had a bite of a late supper.

If you didn’t see the Ladies’ Singles presentation yesterday, here are the Williams sisters, Venus of course is on the left, Serena on the right.

For those who may not know, there are all manner of other championships determined in the weeks that are Wimbledon. Here, a sampling of a few, starting with Jana Novotna and Kathy Rinaldi , winners of the Ladies’ Invitation Doubles title. (Some readers may recognize Ms. Rinaldi, having bumped into her at the Breakers, where she is a traveling pro.)

Wheelchair champions Ronald Vink and Robin Ammerlaan are seen above after receiving their trophy. What a wild week it has been!

Among those not making it to the Ladies’ was top-seeded Ana Ivanovic, seen below in what has come to be known in some tennis fashion circles as “the dress from hell.” Ivanovic’s dress is an Adidas creation; they are her sponsor for this sort of thing.

Despite its loathsome qualities, at least to some, it is scheduled for yet another appearance, this one also a high-profile Grand Slam event, the US Open. What is a far more egregious crime to many (and TP is in sync with this school of thought), is the color of said garment. We give you Exhibit A:

Taupe? It must have taken an extraordinary amount of time and energy to come up with such a wretched color. Ms. Ivanovic is a lovely creature indeed, and she shines despite the muddy tone of the dress, but honestly Mr. Adidas. Is this the best you can do? More depressing is what occurs when you click on the ‘Shop’ link on Ms. Ivanovic’s website; you are taken to the Tennis-Warehouse ecommerce site; what you see at the top of the page is this:

As the good folks at Down the Line Tennis note:

All you want is an originally designed, inspired and functional dress to wear for the final Grand Slams of the year and here’s what they give you: The Wimbledon dress (above), in the required white with lilac piping around the neckline and arm holes, was supposedly inspired by flower petals but I’m thinking someone was eating lady fingers when they came up with the design. And for the US Open you’re sporting the same dress but in some drab grey-brown moment (below). *Yawn* Even the proportions, most noticeably the length of the dress, seem awkward on you.

BTW, Down the Line is a must see for anyone favoring fashion + tennis, a wonderful read blending those two elements and more. Because we devoted a fair amount of coverage to Maria Sharapova and the now infamous Tennis Tuxedo (our capitalization) she wore at Wimbledon, we thought it only right we let you know Ms. Sharapova has recovered from the pain of that early departure from the tournament, at least on the surface of things.

Ms. Sharapova is seen above with Stella McCartney, at the London launch party for Ms. McCartney’s organic line of clothing. Ms. Sharapova then made her way to Paris, seen below at Valentino’s runway show for the 2009 Spring line (with friend Camilla Belle on the right).

If one is to believe Pro-Direct Tennis, the “Definitive Online Tennis Store”, then this is what we’ll see Ms. Sharapova wearing at Flushing Meadows, the Nike Sharapova US Open Day Dress:

The site also shows the dress in white, and offers both for pre-ordering. We’re not comfortable stating definitively this is the dress Nike and Sharapova plan for the Open, but wanted to share the info and the images. The site does have something for those who favor the Adidas Ivanovic dress planned for the Open, a coordinating/matching warm-up pant, seen below. We have learned the color is not mud, nor taupe, but Lava Grey, and there are several coordinates in the group, as you would expect. Below we show the tennis skirt, also available for pre-ordering.

Finally tonight, a reminder the Lacoste sale is still going on:

Top Ten ‘Social Status’ Brands – Is Yours on the List? And an Anti-Prep Update

Recently The Spousal Unit indicated that at times The Princess might be a bit… well, a tad ‘snarky’ in her posts. Snarky? SNARKY? Moi? Feeling the need to defend my good name and reputation, it became obvious that some research was in order. Below we offer partial results for perusal at your leisure.

snarky

Pronunciation: \ˈsnär-kē\
Function: adjective
Etymology: dialect snark to annoy, perhaps alteration of snark to irritate
1 : crotchety, snappish
2 : sarcastic, impertinent, or irreverent in tone or manner <snarky lyrics>
snark·i·ly \-kə-lē\ adverb

We were delighted to find a wealth of information on the topic, with page after page of definitions, discussion and even some debate; it was really quite educational. Frankly, our favorite part of the research involved learning that snark may also be used as an adverb. Right now I’m trying to think of a way to insert it into conversation that way. How do you feel about Snarkalicious…? Oh, TSU was spot on, as always.

Let’s start with an Anti-Prep Update. This was, quite frankly, impossible to resist. As some may already know, Paris is beyond über Anti-Prep. She actually transcends the category, surpassed only by Kim Kardashian and possibly Perez Hilton. And maybe a few others. At any rate, we present Exhibit A, a heartfelt statement from Ms. Hilton on the home page of her hair extensions site, viewable here:

Everyone should get the chance to be me. That’s why I created the world’s hottest hair extensions. Choose from ten fabulous shades and you will be a clip away from hotness.

Paris Hilton

If we had only known that everyone should have that chance. To be her. Darn it. Once again our unhotness has been exposed in all of its stark, naked horror for everyone to see. And I had no idea I had the chance to be her. No. Idea. At All.

Well, chin up, shoulders back and all that, for here at the Prepatorium we do not let little tragedies like this derail us; we move on. We stated we would be discussing the Top Social Status Brands and we will proceed to do precisely that, hotness-like hair extensions or not. Harumph.

This particular list comes as the result of extensive research done by the Luxury Institute, and The Princess is more than gratified to see who is at the top of The List. You may well recognize The Knot clutches below from the Number One brand.

Bottega Veneta Knot Clutches

The Institute polled 1600 individuals with a minimum annual income of $150,000 for the survey, and Bottega Veneta took the top spot. In a story about the poll, Luxury Institute CEO Milton Pedraza notes “Bottega is subtle and inconspicuous — and paradoxically has gotten some press for this…You know it if you’re in the know. It’s for people who aren’t looking to impress others.” Below we show a look from their Fall/Winter 2008 apparel line.

Bottega Veneta Fall Line

Valentino follows in second place, then Prada (landing page at Neimans seen below)

Prada at neiman Marcus

Then Chanel, followed by Hermes in fifth place.

Chanel Logo

Giorgio Armani was in sixth place, then we have Versace (that is a dress from the 2008/2009 Versace Resort line below),

Versace Resort Look

then Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. And there you have the top ten from the list.

Vuitton Bag at eLuxury

BTW, if you were wondering who Anna Wintour might fancy come this fall’s election, here’s a clue: she had quite a role at last night’s fundraiser for prospective First Lady Michelle Obama, at a Manhattan gallery. (Wintour is the oh-so-powerful Editor at Vogue magazine and hypothetically the role model for Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama Anna Wintour

Judging from the list of attendees at the function it was quite the place to be.Remember our mentions of Lauren Santo Domingo in previous posts? She was also at last night’s festivities at the Chelsea gallery in a divine Oscar de la Renta frock along with Spike Lee, designers Monique Lhuillier, Georgina Chapman and Nicole Miller. (You know, the Nina Ricci-SJP-SATC-Premiere-Dress-from-You-Know-Where-Nightmare that Lauren wore first?)

Speaking of Sex and the City, Cynthia Nixon also attended, wearing Calvin Klein Collection. Others in attendance included Lebron James and his girlfriend, and you could see Zac Posen’s “Yes We Can, Obama 08” t-shirt beneath his blazer. Many thanks to Fashion Week Daily for the fab photos!

We close with this absolutely delightful image from the good folks at Barneys. It was part of an email from them several days ago; looking at it keeps bringing a smile to my face. On an afternoon when some whimsy seems like a good idea, we’ll just leave things here and say “Au revoir.” (It is linked if you feel compelled to click!)
