Team USA’s “uber-preppy” Uniforms & Spring Fever

Hello-Hello and welcome to a sunny, shiny new week!

Did everyone watch last night’s Closing Ceremony in Vancouver?  We have received a number of inquiries about Team USA’s Polo Ralph Lauren uniforms for the event.

The photo of our Bronze-Medal team from short track skating helps show the look. Below (L) Apolo Ohno and Lindsey Vonn wait backstage before entering the stadium, on the right, Shani Davis.

This image from a previous post on the uniforms better shows the Shawl Collar Cardigan.

Polo Ralph Lauren

That item is now sold out in adult sizes, but if looking to put Muffy or Porter in one of the Closing Ceremony Cardigans, they are still available in Children’s sizes, as are the Opening Ceremony Puffer jackets. .

But if seeking most of the popular styles, including the hats for both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, prepare for disappointment. Still available? Items like the Men’s Tie and Opening Ceremony Knit Sweater.

The Team USA Shop has just four women’s items remaining and the same in the Men’s department.

The uniforms from PRL and Nike have mostly been met with praise by the athletes.  Gold Medalist Hannah Kearney wrote about her Olympic experience for MTV:

“The 104 pieces of Team USA clothing and swag that we received from Nike and Ralph Lauren upon our arrival in Vancouver, along with an Olympic ring (which I paid good money to upgrade to white gold and diamonds), make excellent mementos.”

Not everyone is happy about the uniforms. According to this story in the Post, the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) is upset with Ralph Lauren:

“… is being criticized for putting his oversize Polo logo on the chests of the US Olympic athletes instead of the stars and stripes.

Some of the 165,000 members of the patriotic Daughters of the American Revolution — who control some of the most exclusive country clubs in the nation — have even talked about organizing a ban on Polo merchandise in the pro shops in those clubs.”

This turns out to have been (essentially) a tempest in a teapot; a DAR spokesperson says there is no such boycott.  In this story Team USA receives high marks for the uniforms:

“The iconic American designer succeeded in creating an uber-preppy look during the opening ceremony…He went more “casual” than those of the Beijing games, if one’s definition of casual is the East-coast old money look.”

An interesting side note: many of the Polo Ralph Lauren uniform pieces were made in Vancouver. This Seattle Times story has more on that angle.

We thought Team Canada looked outstanding.

All weekend we have been readings friends’ Tweets and blogs and Facebook mentions about spring fever; we appreciate knowing we are not alone in our strong desire for warmer climes. (TPP is here on FB and here on Twitter.)

Nor do we harbor any intention of calming the fever, rather we hope to inflame it via some springy styles.

Tory Burch

Above, looks by Tory Burch from her new Garden Prints collection. The Camille Dress and Megane Cropped Pant are now available for pre-ordering.

While the dress wouldn’t do a thing for us, the pants are darling.  Below left, the Roscoe Jacket and on the right, the new Slip On Sneaker, with a touch of nautical style.

The Kids’ Simone Cardigan at Tory Burch looks great but we’re not sure if we like the Tunic quite as much.

We are waffling on it for reasons we can’t quite figure out…hhhm.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, a look at some spring styles from Manolo Blahnik; on the left is the Gloton in polkadot (the designer’s favorite shoe for spring, according to Vogue.com) and on the right is the Pulque.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with this Pretty in Pink & Green shower curtain, discovered over at the Pink & Green Scene.

With that sunny image we say goodbye until next time!

More Olympic Uniforms Revealed & You Can Buy Some!

Hello-Hello, and welcome to our little corner of insanity, such is the wackiness of a retailer’s holiday season! (Pssst – we love it!)

We begin today with news about Talbots. News that no one here at the Prepatorium can decipher very well, nor can any of the online brain trust we queried.  Suffice it to say that:

  • Talbots is “merging” with a company called BPW
  • Talbots is paying off what they owe Aeon, a Japanese firm
  • Trudy Sullivan, the current CEO, is staying on
  • big changes are not anticipated

There you have it, with apologies for our inability to apply anything we learned at B-school to the announcement. (To see a full story on the news, click here.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, a look at the uniforms the US Snowboarding Team will be wearing at next winter’s Olympic Games.

The uniforms are made by Burton Snowboards, above we share the men’s style. To us the most amazing part of the look is the Gore-Tex pants made to look like ripped denim. The Times’ Vancouver Olympics blog explains more:

“The uniforms plainly reflected the team’s desire to reconcile the individualism inherent in the sport’s culture with the earnest national pride inherent in the Olympic Games.”

USA Hockey has also unveiled its look for Vancouver.

The new jerseys from Nike may be purchased online.

We are struggling with the Women’s Knit Hat from USA Hockey/Nike.

It must be much cuter when it’s on.

Because there are not enough marketing and sponsorship opportunities with just the Official Opening Ceremony uniforms, Official Closing Ceremony uniforms, official individual sport uniforms, official practice uniforms, official event uniforms, etc., we also have the Official Team USA Medal Stand jackets.

Courtesy Nike/Team USA

“This ultra-warm jacket is the same style that will be worn by the winners on the medal stand during the 2010 Winter Olympics and features a cozy quilted lining, a filled puffer body, a high neck zip and hood to keep you toasty in winning style!”

Nike is also making these; above we show the Women’s version, but the Men’s is essentially the same.

Months ago we showed these sketches of the Team USA uniforms created by Polo Ralph Lauren. (This post has the background.)

Courtesy Polo Ralph Lauren

The vision in the sketches has been transformed into actual apparel:

Even though the Games are months away, the actual uniform pieces are now available to the general public. Below left, the Ladies Long Sleeve Hoodie, and on the right, the Fleece Mock Neck for Ladies.

If looking for something not quite so… dramatic, how about the Team USA Opening Ceremony Hat (L), or the Ski Cap?

For the MOTH (Man Of The House), the Half-Zip Sweater might be appreciated (L), or the Olympic Graphic T-shirt

All of these pieces are available at the Team USA online shop.

Because we are due at a meeting, we must cut this short. Trust the Princess when we say we have barely scratched the surface of this topic.

Phelps Inspires Team USA, Federer Match, Serena & Venus Williams, I “Love” Michael Phelps T-Shirt

Hello and Happy Thursday….! Wow! First of all, a spoiler alert to protect anyone who hasn’t seen the outcomes of today’s tennis matches.

SPOILER ALERT

***The next portion of today’s post features photos and RESULTS from Tennis matches played today, Thursday, 8.14.08 ***

We don’t know where or if anyone can watch tennis from the Beijing Summer Games but just in case, we wanted to do our goofy little alert. We do apologize for the way this rather loud graphic message intrudes upon our serene and placid piece of the web. (Okaaaaay, when did The Princess decide to go all calm and caper-free?)

But you can imagine our amazement when we strolled in after a day of meetings for PreppyPrincess.com and we saw things like this on our desktop!

Roger Federer vs. James Blake

Roger Federer vs. James Blake

Which also translated in to seeing things like this:

Teams USA's James Blake after defeating Roger Federer

James Blake, USA

The upset of the current #1 player in the world by #8 ranked James Blake of the USA shocked the tennis world. It also has some wondering if the toll of being #1 for the last 4-1/2 years has finally caught up with Roger Federer. This is not to detract from Mr. Blake’s achievement today in the Olympic Tennis Quarterfinals. After all, this is someone who has only won one set in the 8 matches he has previously played against the champion.

Roger Federer, Switzerland vs. James Blake, USA

Roger Federer, Switzerland vs. James Blake, USA

It only took Mr. Blake two sets to dispense with Mr. Federer, but this does not include nearly 3-1/2 hours rain delay. Mr. Blake described his thoughts on scoring a major win against Mr. Federer:

“In a lot of the other matches, it has been a point here or there,” Blake said. “That’s why he was No. 1 in the world—he played those points better than everyone. Today I played them well.”

Indeed he did. The loss does underscore Mr. Federer’s lack of a win at any major this year, with only the US Open left to redeem himself. For more on this entire saga, you may want to read the excellent story about Mr. Federer’s current malaise by Selena Roberts on the CNN/SI site.

Her description of post-match responses from both players is poignant:

It was a life-affirming win for Blake, who kissed the American flag sewn into his shirt after the last point. It was devastating for Federer, who hurried off the court, slipping by tennis officials with red eyes.

Ms. Roberts goes on to ask a question many have pondered, especially since the epic battle at Wimbledon between Mr. Federer and Rafael Nadal.

…leaving Federer visibly discombobulated. He talked to himself, challenged calls he was obviously wrong about and seemed mad at his suddenly slow feet.

Who was this cranky man?”

Roger Federer

Roger Federer

“It’s a lack of practice; I haven’t had time to practice whatsoever since February,” Federer conceded after losing to Blake for the first time in their nine matches. “I blame myself the most.”

Perhaps the more rousing story is hearing what contributed to Mr. Blake’s drive:

“Just sitting there watching this morning, watching Michael Phelps set a world record, it was something that was special to me because it made me realise how many people are inspired by him, and that I’m now in the position to have that opportunity, to go out there and get a medal for my country.

“Today was hopefully the first step towards that.”

Congratulations to our James Blake, a remarkable talent with a remarkable story. Woo-hoo! The Women’s quarterfinals were not kind to Team USA’s players. Serena Williams lost her match to Elena Dementieva of Russia, and China’s Li Na beat Venus Williams in a very late-running match.

If you like the way Michael Phelps inspired James Blake and are feeling lots of love for him, you can always go through his website to get videos on swimming, like Michael Phelps-Beneath the Surface:

or cute tee-shirts like this one:

There are even posters to adorn the walls of one of the children’s rooms, if you allow that sort of thing.

BTW, tennis fashionistas can now shop a goodly collection of clothing, hats and all sorts of other things at the official US Open online site, including tees and hoodies like these.

Now that site does not include the Polo Ralph Lauren US Open Collection, now available at the Polo site. That site has been fairly well filled out with items like the US Open Court Hat, US Open Metallic Tote, or the US Open Metallic Big Pony Tee

Big Pony Tank Dress

A rather patriotic red, white and blue look up above, isn’t it? We’ll show more of the Ralph Lauren US Open fashions in the next week.

Here is something fun for those who like the quirky side of life, compliments of WowOWow. If you want a glance at the contents of Miss Manners’ icebox, or want to see what is next to the Snickers bar in Liz Smith’s fridge…

then you simply must pop over to wOw Scenes: Our Refrigerators. Here’s a little tease from TV Anchor/Reporter Cynthia McFadden:

(The lady at the checkout counter the other day did ask me if I ran a day care center. Excessive? I like to think merely prepared …)

We don’t know about you, but we’re simply dying to go peek at Judith Martin’s (Miss Manners), aren’t you? Besides, they have a fabulous story about Madonna turning 50!
