Taylor Swift says “Kanye Who?” Also, Target’s Next Designer Revealed, Ralph Lauren Fashion Week

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday!

We hope to make it a little happier for Miss Pink Tutu, our lucky winner in the Great Preppy Plate and Platter Giveaway! Miss Tutu indicated in her comment she favored the Damask, but we don’t know if it is Boatman’s Geller’s Madison Plate, or perhaps Preppy Plates brand Hot Pink Patter, the Lime Plate, or maybe another style?

Drop us an email Miss Tutu and let us know your selection, as well as how you would like your plate or platter personalized. (This really is Friday Fun to the nth degree, we *love* giving things away!)

This just in! (Gasp – breaking news here at the Prepatorium!) The word is out that the next designer collaboration for Targèt will be with Jean Paul Gaultier, perhaps best known for his cone-shaped bustier Madonna wore on tour. As reported in Women’s Wear Daily, Target has no details on when the collection will launch, what price points will be, or how many pieces will be in the line.

“Gaultier is known for edgy street fashion interpretations, a Parisian panache, over-the-edge couture, generating lots of media and groupie followings.”

Our second tidbit is old news for those who follow us on Twitter (you can follow TP here if so inclined) as we tweeted the sad news a couple of times yesterday: In what can only be called a SOTT (Sign Of The Times),  Prescriptives cosmetics is being closed.

There are a number of contributing factors but the overarching concern is the continued underperformance of the brand.

The line is owned by Estee Lauder (it was originally launched by Ronald Lauder 30 years ago), and we don’t know a timetable for the shutdown. We have already heard  from a number of current customers who tell us they are making plans to stock up.

Fashion Week continues apace, as most everything was wrapping up with last night’s Tommy Hilfiger show. We’ll cover some the Hilfiger collection for Spring 2010 in our next post, but thought Friday Fun mandates we share some celebrity sightings and front-row attendees at yesterday’s shows.

First, recording star Taylor Swift at the Hilfiger show in what we’ll call her “Kanye Who?” look.

After all, looking good is the best revenge. While Miss Swift is far beyond stooping to vengeful behavior, one can’t help but think about that when seeing her in such a stunning dress.

This next photo of the young star (yes, that is Penn Badgley of Gossip Girl to her right, our left, and yes, he’s underdressed once again in yet another tee-shirt, no threat however to James Dean or Marlon Brando) reminds us of an incredibly rigid rule a lesson taught at an early age: ladies cross their ankles, not their knees.  Of course.

We cannot wait to see who she is wearing for Sunday’s Emmy Awards.

And now we cover today’s primary topic, the Ralph Lauren show at Fashion Week.  We start with the front row, Janet Jackson is seen below with Dylan Lauren.

Onto the main attraction: the clothing and accessories.

As described in the Journal’s Heard On The Runway blog (must reading for TP):

“When the going gets tough, the tough get back to honest American working clothes. That’s means jean jackets, striped cotton shirts and pink floral sundresses.”

Some of the denim looks were outstanding, although we recall owning a pair of overalls quite a. long. time. ago.

The references to Steinbeck’s dust bowl were everywhere, with some reviewers even titling their stories “The Grapes of Ralph”.

Here is a taste of the WWD review on Mr. Lauren’s Spring 2010 Collection:

“Certainly there is something wonderful about Lauren’s unabashed romanticism. In an industry rampant with cynicism, he’s proud to be American and believes deeply, as his show notes reminded, in this country’s “resilient spirit.”

ralph-lauren01ralph-lauren05

More from WWD:

“…. he made some risky choices; It’s unlikely many designer customers will aspire to shredded jeans and faded shirts, no matter how perfectly arranged the decay. As for their feminine counterparts, floral house- and sundresses, charmers for sure, but late-to-the-party kind of frocks that have flooded the contemporary market for some time.”

We found some of the tailored styles more appealing…

… and a number of the party frocks divine.

Despite our love of sheer overlays, other looks just didn’t seem to have the right proportions, the skirts overly full.

The look below prompts us to recommend a visit to the High WASP for her views on high-end shorts.

Some touches were absolutely exquisite.

One of our favorite fashion writers, Cathy Horyn at the Times, was not as positive about the show as many other journalists:

“I wondered, looking at the collection—which was weak by Mr. Lauren’s usual standards—what the discussions in his studio were about such a theme. Can hard times and their associated misery ever be an acceptable theme for a fashion show?”

Clearly the designer’s execution of his theme did not sit well with Ms. Horyn.

Kyle Ericksen/WWD

More from Ms. Horyn’s blog post:

“And if the clothes don’t really attempt to explore legitimate modes of American dress, and instead remain on the surface—a little faded and ripped denim with rhinestone sandals—isn’t that somehow worse?”

Most of the handbags shown were of the casual, western look Mr. Lauren favors.

Social Climbers, Polished Preppy, New Tory Burch Eyeglass Line

Hello-Hello everyone….

With Mother Nature dictating TP spend more time inside than out, we thought we might solicit input on a few books to see if any of our cherished readers recommend them.  We’ll start with Social Climbers:

This is the first novel from author Beth Dunn, described on the book’s cover this way:

“Beth Dunn grew up and attended Etiquette school on Philadelphia’s Main Line. At 18, she’d changed from a private girl’s school uniform into a debutante ball gown.”

“Sick of cliques, cruelties and mean girls grown up, Beth Dunn was motivated to write about them.”

The book is self-published through AuthorHouse.  Ms. Dunn has two blogs, Social Climbers, dedicated to promoting the book, and then what looks like a more personal site, Social Climbers Blog. The first shares a good bit of information on the book, chapter titles, tips on being a social climber, etc. Has anyone read this one yet? Is it time well spent?

Our other inquiry involves a book released several years ago, Fashionistas.  Reading the news that a movie based on the book is now confirmed, we were  reminded we never read it!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

With everyone still bundled up in their warmest clothing, comments on this look for Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick caught our eye:

“Ed is wearing a gorgeous Italian Cashmere over coat over his suit. He exudes confidence and has a great sense of authority.  The black gloves are of course more for function than style but he manages to really make the look flow.  His pink shirt and tie offer a burst of color which really compliments the grey.  He should have incorporated his trademark scarf with this look, though this is still one look to gossip about.”

That philosophy comes via PhatGuru, a site probably much too cool for TP!

Speaking of places far too hip for The Princess, retailer Aeropostale has teamed up with DoSomething.org for this year’s Teens for Jeans campaign.

The marketing whizzes working behind the scenes managed to get Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford to be the face of the campaign. Here is how it works:

“Just drop off any pair of your gently worn jeans to any Aéropostale store between January 26th and February 22nd and we’ll make sure they get donated to a local homeless shelter or charity. To say thanks, Aéropostale will give you an additional 25% off your next pair of jeans.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have news today that teen singing star Taylor Swift is launching her own line of clothing.  WWD reports in this story that Ms. Taylor has signed an agreement to do a collection of sundresses.

“The result is a one-season collection of colorful cotton spring dresses called L.E.I. Sundresses by Taylor Swift, shipping to Wal-Mart stores on Feb. 1.”

Talaya Centeno

The sundress is a signature look for the star, worn frequently onstage and in videos.  The sundresses will come in three styles, all priced at $14, bound to be a hit with shoppers.  Not TP’s look, but we are so fond of Ms. Swift, and find her so talented, we just had to mention the story.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Tory Burch fans will be no doubt be pleased to learn the designer is launching an eyewear collection. This tidbit also comes via WWD (in this story), with retail price points running $145-$190.  The line will include prescription frames and sunglasses. Ms. Burch explains some of her reasoning in planning a launch at this point in her brand’s lifecycle:

“I feel people are drawn to accessories now in general, and it’s a category we want to continue to evolve and develop,” Burch said. “With what’s going on in the economy, it’s something new and exciting and it’s opening at a specific price point that will be accessible. Plus eyewear is an easy way to update a look.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We’ll close with two pink items, the first an exercise in “When Pink Goes Wrong,” from French designer Romain Kremer’s runway show.

We really can’t say anything that will add to your viewing experience, so there you have it.  However, on a “Pretty in Pink” possibility for you, we offer the MSI Microstar Windbook:

MSI Microstar Windbook in Pink

Not only is this available in a splendid pink, it is only $430 at J&R online. And while we are all about the iMac and Apple products here at the Palace, when it comes to electronics we have long stated it is also all about the cute factor.

Grins and giggles!

Thakoon for Target Now Online, Gossip Guy goes Prep

Hello-Hello and Happy Days-After-Christmas!

A quick reminder to all that the Thakoon for Target collection has dropped, at least online. 32 items are priced below $24, the additional 23 items are in the $25 – $49 range, so the Collection is fiscally friendly, as promised.

As best we can tell from the photos, there are some nice pieces, like the Oxford Stripe Tee:

Thakoon for Target®

Thakoon for Target®

The Sleeveless Sweater is also cotton, available in ‘navy pride’ and grey.

Thakoon for Target

The brightly colored bathing suits look fun, and are wisely being sold as separates, similar to the way Shoshanna markets her fabulous swimsuits. Many of the looks carry a preppy aesthetic in either their overall design or the textile pattern. (Or both in isolated instances.)

We aren’t overly entranced with all of the pieces in the collection; this Pleated Stripe Dress is 100% polyster. Ouch. It is a shame, because it almost looks like the perfect repp tie stripe, no?

thakoontargetrepptiedress41rawshj3bl_aa260_-1

Sadly, the colorblock dress we were so enchanted by in all of the early photos is also polyester.

Thakoon for Target

We just don’t understand the poly, especially when used for pieces designed to be worn next to one’s skin. Who knows, TP is frequently wrong and it is entirely possible our opinion will be changed after visiting the Boutique and feeling the material firsthand. So to speak. At any rate, the entire Collection should be available tomorrow morning at those Target stores  designated to carry the line.

We can only hope it won’t be long before we learn if this gifted designer has been selected to style either Michelle Obama’s Inaugural gown, or her daytime look for January 20th.

Another month, another big magazine story featuring one of the oh-so-popular Gossip Girl stars.

Terry Richardson

PHOTO: Terry Richardson

In the January 2009 GQ (yes, the one with Ms. Aniston on the cover in nothing but a Brooks Brothers tie) issue, actor Penn Badgley is featured in “AMERICAN SPLENDOR – Essential pieces of sartorial Americana worn by Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley. In the photo above Mr.Badgley wears a Lacoste sweater and polo shirt.

Terry Richardson

All pieces shown in the photo above are Polo by Ralph Lauren. We found the caption/descriptor intriguing:

“It used to be that cardigans were worn by preppies and grandpas. Lately, they’re worn by everyone from artists to DJs (and yes, still grandpas). Try yours with a tie—you needn’t belong to a Princeton eating club to pull it off.”

BTW, Mr. Badgley and co-star/off-screen companion Blake Lively are named as one of the “Best Celebrity Hookups 2008” in a story from Canada’s National Post.  (We can hardly contain our excitement.)

Another ‘Gossip Guy’ figures in a cover story for the upcoming Spring issue of “YourProm” magazine. Teen singing sensation Taylor Swift (a talent of whom we are quite fond) shares her dream date for prom; it is none other than Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford.

Your Prom

Your Prom

BTW, GQ is running a contest on their site featuring (among other prizes) a $10,000 J. Crew wardrobe.

And finally, a look at what happens When Pink Goes Wrong:

No one will be surprised to learn the pink Bentley belongs to one of our very first anti-preps.

We are now speechless.

🙂
