SATC…the Morning After. Including the Big ‘Oops’ on SJP Nina Ricci Gown

Sarah Jessica Parker & Lauren (Davis) Santo Domingo in Nina Ricci

Hello-hello and happy-happy. Are we all recovered, or at least well on the way to recovering from the Sex and the City weekend? Good, because just when you thought it was safe… and we do apologize in advance… there is a bit more SATC news. Well actually, just a few little tidbits, the first one you have probably heard all about: ‘The Dress Tempest.’ In case you haven’t, it’s quite the buzz.

As the photos above make rather evident, Sarah Jessica Parker was not the first and only to wear that stunning strapless Nina Ricci gown on the red carpet. As she was told by designer Olivier Theyskens when she specifically questioned him about it. Remember the big Met gala on May 5th yours truly was simply gaga over? Both Theyskens and his boss told SJP the dress had not been worn by anyone other than for magazine photo shoots. Can anyone spell Pinocchio? On May 5th socialite and former Vogue staffer Lauren Santo Domingo wore the gown to a rather significant red carpet event, the Met Costume Institute Gala. With whom did she go to the ball? Mr. Theyskens.

How is Mr. Theyskens described on the Nina Ricci website?

“His spectacularly constructed dresses are a constant feature on red carpets and magazine covers…He is firmly on the side of the women he dresses and interprets with wonder.”

This is not the first time the label has been dishonest with a celebrity regarding a gown. Such bad form. Honestly. Evidently they also burned an original prep, Reese Witherspoon; details are in the posting by NY Times blogger Cathryn Horn. And it isn’t as if Ms. Santo Domingo and Mr. Theyskens aren’t fast friends, frequently turning up at functions together. It’s that very friendship however that makes the deception that much more blatant.

Lauren Santo Domingo and Olivier Theyskens at ABT Gala

We will leave Mr. Theyskens to his own self-destructive devices and move on to a much jollier SATC topic. (And ooooohhh, we do so love the timing of this. Brilliant, day-after kind of stuff that gets lots of play. Why, just look at us sharing the love!) And it involves the actress playing Charlotte, the film’s character with the closest thing to a preppy style aesthetic.

SATC Sex and City Kristin Davis Belk

Word from the ever-so-fabulous Belk department store group they have signed a long-term deal with SATC’s Kristin Davis. The collection will launch this fall and include shoes (of course) and other accessories like handbags and jewelry, sportswear, and sleepwear. Davis ultimately hopes to expand the lines for an even broader range of merchandise, including bed and bath. (Snooze release here.)

Belk Logo

The partnership seems to make sense, at least on its surface merits. Davis says she grew up shopping at Belk, which adds a nice touch to the arrangement. For those unfamiliar with the company, Belk is southern born and bred, going back to 1800’s, now with 300+ stores in 16 southern states. And here is the amazing part of the Belk equation, especially in this day and age: the company remains family owned and operated. If the designs and quality meet expectations, this might have a future.

Fellow Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten line for low-price retailer Steve and Barry’s leads the way in this arena. Of course, there is a line of special Sex and the City tee-shirts and tanks for sale at Steve and Barry’s with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Children’s Defense Fund.

BTW, has anyone noticed the extraordinary volume of SATC merchandise out on the street? (And online as well; tee-shirt below from HBO online SATC store.) This is evidence TP has been a bit under the weather, as we should have not only expected this, we should have been predicting it. Hhhhmmm… it seems the the tiara is tilting a bit up there. Indeed.

An Actual Preppy Link to Sex and the City! OMG!

Sex and the City Movie Logo

Let’s face it, there really hasn’t been significant preppy linkage to Sex and the City, other than the logo featuring a most luscious shade of pink. We have experienced important diplomatic overtures from high level community leaders like McMommy & MommyPie, but in terms of definitive linkage, it just wasn’t happening. Until now.

Ladies and gentleman, please turn your attention to Exhibit A, just below, and meet Megan. Megan Thompson to be more precise, of the Pretty in Pink blog, who describes herself as being “into all things pink, preppy, and southern!” Megan is featured in a story in today’s Memphis paper about the Sex and the City movie opening at theaters Friday.

The photo on the left is from the Commercial Appeal and the one on the right is from Megan’s blog. Now, the paper wanted to shoot Megan ‘blogging about fashion’ since that’s what Megan loves doing. Look carefully at those clothes behind Megan in her closet; we’re guessing at least 40% are pink or green or a blend of both!

Sex & the City Pretty in Pink Megan\'s Blog Picture

Stop by Megan’s blog if you have a minute – it’s fun reading and she has loads of great photos! Miss Megan, congrats on the newspaper article! You’re a star! (Actually, you already were.) So there you have it: at least one actual bond tying the online preppy community to the SATC movie! (Whew, here at the Preppy Planetorium we were so worried the movie opening would come… and go… and we would be failures at pinning down that missing link. What a relief.)

The Princess fervently hopes Miss Megan and everyone else has a blast at the movie this weekend! Enjoy!

Updating our story in April about Cosabella’s Sex and the City lingerie line, as you might guess, the merchandise is actually available now. Both Bare Necessities and Chic Mystique seem to be well-stocked with the light and lacy goodies.

Updating the big whineathon post we did on Sex and the City fashions, you may remember the following photograph from the film’s London premiere and our ensuing consternation regarding The Hat. (Yes, it was that bad, it merited its own title.)

SATC Sex and the City London Premiere sjp Sarah Jessica Parker hat

We openly acknowledged our ineptitude at comprehending and/or appreciating many of the ‘fashion looks’ shown in the television series and those ‘leaked’ from the film. We were relieved to hear from readers that we were not alone in our confusion, to say the least. Tonight we feel even better to learn that the movie’s Costume Designer, Patricia Field, was also confused by Sarah Jessica Parker’s selection of The Hat, created by Philip Treacy, a master of the genre. In an interview with New York magazine, here’s how things went:

NYMAG: Would you have done that?
“I didn’t understand it. I didn’t get the combination. Okay, it matched — so what else? I’m not going to lie, I didn’t get it at all.I didn’t understand it. I didn’t get the combination. Okay, it matched — so what else? I’m not going to lie, I didn’t get it at all.”

BTW, just a little aside here: did you know Patricia Field has a line for Payless Shoes? The Princess was completely unaware of this… we had no idea! But then, TP has been, and shall remain we fear, pretty much unaware of most that is considered hip and cool in contemporary culture. Sigh.

We leave you with a peek at some of the Patricia Field Payless line. The shoes and bags do have the most interesting names, like Socialite, and Heiress. Imagine that! And they are all very bright and shiny, definitely statement makers! Hubba-Hubba!

Preppy Seersucker: “Save those Bucks for the Country Club”

One of the great joys of ‘officially entering the Summer season’ is that for those of us from an era that adheres firmly to certain fashion guidelines, it’s the time of year when we get to have certain favorites walked out of the walk-in. More succinctly, we’re down with the seersucker.

Oddly enough, we’re not the only group appreciative of the fabric’s finer points. A few other establishments and members of the media have caught on as well; we thought it a good day to share some of their observations and links to their original stories should you like to peruse them at your leisure.

We start with The WSJ’s ‘Ask Teri’ feature from last Thursday, the 22nd, in which a college student wonders what is appropriate attire for a summer internship in Washington, D.C. With a little help from a friend, Michael Macko, men’s fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue, here is a portion of the response:

“Why not consider today’s more urbane take on seersucker, as in black-and-white or dark-gray-and-white seersucker suits?”

“Save your white oxford bucks or white loafers — without socks — for the country club.”

We’ll move on to this month’s issue of GQ with its snappy feature entitled “An American in Shanghai” and the subhead, ‘In the old city of China’s most booming metropolis, nothing catches the eye like an expat in a new-look seersucker suit.” There is an online slide show that you can start or stop at your pleasure with outstanding photos by Peggy Sirota of some great… and not-so-great seersucker suits. A few fashion tips are provided, such as ‘Know your Seersucker’ and the reader is advised that seersucker doesn’t need to be splashy. (Really? Noooooo! But we generally prefer ours to be splashy.) The first is this Polo by Ralph Lauren; the shirt, tie and pocket square are also Polo by Ralph Lauren.

Polo by Ralph Lauren Seersucker Suit GQ Gentleman\'s Quarterly

A higher contrast stripe is shown in the next suit, Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers with a shirt also by Black Fleece and tie by Banana Republic.

Seersucker Suit Black Fleece by Brooks Borthers GQ Feature

Before we move completely away from GQ/Men’s Style, they have another feature on ‘Building Your Perfect Wardrobe for Spring/Summer ’08‘ and they show the following, another Polo by Ralph Lauren seersucker suit, this time with a Gap shirt and tie/pocket square duo from Robert Talbott.

Polo Ralph Lauren suit seersucker

Of course, we know it isn’t all about suits and it most definitely is *not* all about menswear. How about these simply divine blue Seersucker Golf Club Head Covers from the good folks at Club Contessa.

Seersucker Golf Club Head Covers Contessa

Or the absolutely sweet Gingham Checked seersucker striped dress for your little girl, complete with pink grosgrain ribbon? This treasure can be found at Kule, a delightful little shop online from Nikki Kule; you can even host or attend a trunk show if you want to see the goodies in person. (And who wouldn’t want to from looking at them online!)

Or this precious Florence Eiseman Seersucker Dress in a deep aqua stripe, for Sizes 3-9 Months, 12-24 Months, and 2T-4T. The Princess asks, how can you possibly resist, especially since it is on sale at Neimans? (I mean, look at those cute little flowers…..oh my!)

Florence Eiseman Seersucker Dress Neiman Marcus Florence Eiseman Neiman Marcus Seersucker

Of course, seersucker can also be simply outstanding for home decorating purposes, as evidenced by these Seersucker Window Panels in Pink Plaid or Aqua Plaid (actually The Princess would call these madras plaid seersucker…yes?) at everyone’s home-away-from-home, Le Boutique Tar-szhay.

Target Aqua Plaid Seersucker Curtain Panel

If you aren’t going to wear it or hang it from the walls, one location you should definitely think about for seersucker is your table. As in dining room table, breakfast bar, kitchen island, wherever one has Cook serve their oatmeal and morning papers. (Or perhaps where you give Junior his Fruit Loops and sippy cup; you get the drift.) The pink Seersucker Pod placemats from the Preppy Princess are precisely what you need to enhance your summer dining experience, or to give as a luscious gift with the coordinating napkins. (Of course they’re a Princess design! You knew that the moment you saw them!) <grin.>

And because the Times felt compelled to mention seersucker in their amazing story on the swimsuits at Parke & Ronen, we thought we should share it with you as well, just in case you missed it in Thursday’s paper. The story, part of the Times’ Critical Shopper series that TP simply adores, is entitled Swimsuits Make the Man. We must acknowledge that information was news to us. At any rate, it is a most entertaining read. If you are in need of a gentleman’s swimsuit and wanted to see a Parke and Ronen version in seersucker (and on sale!), just click here.

Now some of you may know we spent the better portion of the last few days looking at fashions from Sex and the City as worn by Miranda (and personally styled for Book Mamma) as well a McMommy version of Charlotte’s aesthetic. We are now left with only one question: would any of the four primary characters have any seersucker apparel or accessories in their closets? If you answered in the affirmative, then it would seem you have a moral obligation to leave a comment telling us which character, and what on earth she could possibly own in seersucker? Oh, good. We so hoped you would do that.

It is clear to us there is so much more to be done on seersucker, but sadly, that shall have to wait for another day. Board meetings, flowers, Spousal Unit, Vet, just too-too much happening! But Happy, Happy Day to all! Speaking of happy and the vet, here’s one of the household who does her best to make us happy: Tilly, our little rescue bulldog about to celebrate her second anniversary with us. She asked if she might say “Hello” to Mummy’s friends; it didn’t seem right to deny her that opportunity as you know how we feel about good manners and children learning as they grow and learning by doing. (Of course the vet believes Miss Tilly is fairly ancient as English Bulldogs go, but as we always say, it is never to late to learn good manners.)

Another Sex and the City Soiree, Book Mamma Style (with a Touch of Miranda)

After reading a previous post that we had cobbled together regarding a Sex and the City Premiere party a friend was attending, and the ensuing assemblage of a hypothetical party wardrobe for said friend (who happens to be the one and only fantabulous McMommy), we were asked by another reader for assistance of a similar nature.

This time it’s a wonderful friend of McMommy looking for some fashion guidance (although why anyone would seek help from these quarters remains a mystery to us), and let’s face it dolls, any friend of the McMommy is a friend of the McPrincess, we all know that. It’s also another brilliant blogger, the wonderful Book Mamma, (who has two darling little boys and we just can’t figure out how she has time to blog but we’ll leave that for another day) and she was good enough to provide us with a bit of guidance regarding a SATC character she might model, in this case suggesting it would be the generally all buttoned up legal lady, Miranda. However, it has been pointed out to us that Miranda has also been known to let her hair down just a bit, usually when she is at more relaxed formal functions or very, very casual events. (Pointed out to us because it could be said that we are a bit SATC-challenged…is that a polite way of saying we are essentially clueless about the show, the series, the movie?) We are presuming Book Mamma’s premiere gala falls into just such a category as cited above, the kind where she can relax a bit, and be comfortable among friends.

Barrie Pace Flowing Ruched Silk Dress Barrrie Pace Ruched Silk Dress Detail inset

Now, having taken that into consideration, The Princess is thinking that Miranda/Mamma might be feeling a little well, let’s just say a bit fancy free and perhaps even a tad frisky come Friday, so we are thinking it is possible (we’re only saying possible) that Mamma/Miranda may want to have a bit of bare shoulder action going on. (Oh my!) It is in that spirit we bring you the Donna Morgan Silk Ruched Dress seen above, which has exquisite hand beading at the waist that is oh-so-elegant, and a wonderful girly-girl skirt the Mamma can play with and twirl around in all evening long, totally making the boys crazy! (And making all the other girls just pea-green with envy!) The Book Mamma is smokin’ hot! Now if price should influence your thoughts on which dress the Mamma should select, we want to advise you it is on sale, for only $79.99 at Barrie Pace. Don’t tell me you’re not feeling the love The Princess is sending your way! We so heart your bank statement on your behalf, we can’t tell you!

Donna Ricco Rosette Blouse at Barrie Pace

If that doesn’t light your fire, we offer something in a completely different direction from the Donna Ricco Collection at Barrie Pace, in this case the Donna Ricco Rosette Blouse shown above; it’s 100% silk (of course) and completely lined so it’s also going to look better and wear better as well. It’s paired with the coordinating Palazzo Pant in silk chiffon, fun and floaty, very versatile and a staple you’ll be glad you have in your evening and formal-wear wardrobe.

Because we want you to feel that you are making your dress selection from a broad base of garments, we also included this elegant dinner suit in metallic brocade that makes a great style statement without being loud. We know you loathe loud; we won’t let that happen to you. Not on our watch. So here is the suit by Muse, also at Barrie Pace.

Muse Shimmery Metallic Brocade Dinner Suit at Barrie Pace

Now when speaking of shoes, regardless of which dress you select, we’ll be speaking of heels methinks, substantial, significant, major heels. M-A-J-O-R. Not MAJOR as in say, The AntiPrep type of MAJOR, no, not that sort of MAJOR; just no flats or kitten heels for this little extravaganza, agreed? So here are a few suggestions for your tootsies: We start by suggesting either the Kate Spade ‘Lover’ sandal (what an appropriate name) in black satin with a jaunty little bow, or the Kate Spade Loupe, both with a 3.5″ heel, and both at Nordstrom.

Kate Spade Lover Sandal at Nordstrom Kate Spade Loupe shoe at Nordstrom - Gold & Black

We recognize the party frocks may have been a tad over budget. (I know, you’re shrieking, “a tad…a tad, could you puh-leeze tell us how you define ‘tad’ in PrincessVille or wherever it is you park your pumps at night, hello?” and we are sorry for that, truly we are.) So on the off chance you may be looking to economize on a shoe, here is a suggestion: the Dulce Patent Peep Toe Pump shown below in gold, with a 4″ heel. I think that qualifies as a nicely understated yet substantial shoe…yes? And it is certainly soft on the pocketbook at $17.49! I bet you already know where to find it: Le Boutique Tar-szhay. Of course.

Mossimo Dulce Patent Peep Toe Pumps - Gold

You simply cannot go wrong with Stuart Weitzman, and the final suggestion we offer in the shoe venue is the Stuart Weitzman Trixie sandal, slim and sexy without being well, tacky. We show it in both gold and black because both would be appropriate with any of the outfits shown above and both would be a wise investment. And both have the killer 4″ heel that make you look even sexier than you already are. I beg your pardon? You can’t what? You can hardly walk in 4″ heels? Well dear, we are *so* not wanting to hear about that this evening. You will simply have to deal with it. Tell your besties not to buy the jumbo popcorn, as they are simply going to have to leave an arm free to prop you up with, how is that? And if they say they *really* want their popcorn, what does that tell us about our BFFs?

Stuart Weitzman Trixie Sandal Stuart Weitzman Trixie Sandal - Black

Of course, we’re still practically naked, at least when it comes to accessorizing. Let’s talk jewelry for a moment. We believe some ‘statement type’ bracelets are in order, perhaps a few like these, starting with the Natural Horn and brushed brass followed by another Horn and Brass bangle bracelet, also oversized, both from Target and both less than $20. (Natch.)

Natural Horn and Brushed Brass Bangle Bracelet - Brown Horn & Brass Bangle bracelet Target

Since you’re in the Target Sale section, look at these bracelets and think about putting several of them together to start a look: the 5-row Stretch Bracelet, the Black Triangle Beaded Stretch Bracelet, and the Stretch Beaded Silver/Black Bracelet. Or as The Princess has been known to say, rack ’em and stack ’em.

Target Jewelry 5-Row Stretch Bracelet Target Triangle Beaded Stretch Bracelet - Black Target Stretch Beaded Silver Bracelet

Or pop into Kohls and peek at their jewelry; they portray themselves as something of a price-sensitive retailer, offering goodies like this Daisy Fuentes oversized cuff bracelet at $14, or the Axcess faux antiqued cuff bracelet at $24.

Daisy Fuentes Cuff at Kohls axcess Antiqued Teardrop Cuff Bracelet

Or check out the Nordstrom half-yearly sale online and snag a handful (more appropriately, an armful) of the Tasha Faceted bangle bracelets, the Tasha Organic Metal Resin Bangles, or the Tasha Square bangles with some around $19, others approximately $24, all are on sale.

Tasha Faceted Bangle Bracelet Tasha Organic Metal Resin Bangle Tasha Square Bangles at Nordstrom

Handbag. Purse. Yes, we are aware that task has yet to be accomplished. And we *do* want to get it accomplished, as TP is thinking about another statement piece if at all possible. Not necessarily a head-turning, eye-popping piece, but not any wimpy, wuss-bunny, lame-brain, whiny kind of bag either. Nay-nay. Not for this party, on this night, for this movie, in this town.

Now it seems to us that if McMommy had the luxury of perusing and cruising eBay to make an acquisition of this nature, Book Mamma should be offered that opportunity as well, don’t you agree? After all, fair is fair. And would you look at that?! A drop-dead beautiful Antique Beaded Evening bag that can be carried by its short handle or carried as a clutch, whichever you prefer. The silk charmeuse lining in that chartreuse color is to die for!

Antique Beadsed Purse Auction on eBay

eBay Auction ending 6.2.08 Beaded Vintage Purse

But if vintage is not your thing, and you would like something ‘brand new’ from your local or online retailer, here’s a definite ‘statement purse’ that is well worth a look, the Jessica McClintock ‘Disco’ Mirrored Minaudiere in gold at Nordstrom for a relatively reasonable price in our most humble of opinions (and that’s very humble, trust us) of about $98.

Nordstrom Jessica McClintock \'Disco\' Mirrored Minaudiere

If you don’t want anything quite that flashy, we have just what you are looking for, a bit more conservative, and at a stellar price point. The Merona Pleated Clutch has loads of chic little vertical pleats that you can’t really see very well in this photograph, for only $14.99 at….the envelope please….of course. Target.

Target Merona Clutch Black

We do so hope Book Mamma feels like there are some possibilities here, despite our being somewhat inept and ignorant when it comes to the whole Sex and the City phenomenon. We did have a delightful time locating a few goodies for her to consider; spending someone else’s money is always so much fun! And on that happy note, we’re going to toddle off for a little nightcap. Yes, it would seem a nightcap is in order.

McMommy’s Sex & the City Movie Premiere Fashion Statement

Greetings and a warm welcome to all this holiday weekend! Most importantly, fond and grateful remembrances for each and every individual who made it possible for us to be who and what we are today. Sigh. We are so very blessed.

Today’s post is brief, as what The Princess is actually doing is engaging in a grown-up version of Paper Dolls, only doing it online! How tedious for all of you!

Dolly Dingle Paper Dolls

The Back Story: Today’s post is mostly about McMommy. She is simply one of the very best Bloggers in the Galaxy. Period.

McMommy Chronicles

At any rate, for some reason (we’re thinking a few too many Manhattans), McMommy wrote an absolutely insane comment on TP’s blog related to the McPrincess’s fashion skills. The non-existent skills. As in none. N-O-N-E. You see, The McMommy is attending a gala for a movie premiere later this month with her Besties and thought perchance we might provide a bit of fashion insight. TP was mortified! The only insight we have is determining which pearls go with what twinset! Of course, the movie that is opening is Sex and the City, a film with a cast of gowns, party frocks and accessories to kill for, although (as we have frequently noted) some are more than a bit over the top. Quite. Now McMommy did mention in her query an affinity for the wardrobe leanings of Charlotte’s character, at least more so than any of the other three women in the primary roles; TP is grateful for small favors.

After much window shopping, The Princess came up with the following selections: One of the two short formal party frocks seen below, both from Le Boutique Tar-szhay, both from the Isaac Mizrahi for Target® line. The first is the Pink Lace Ruched Dress, and the second is the deep pink or fuchsia Taffeta Camelot Party Dress, seen just below the lace close-up.

Now that you have selected the dress, it’s on to the shoe issue. Or non-issue in this case, as we think you will absolutely fall in love with these as soon as you see them: the Marjean Slide Sandals from Joan and David, complete with grosgrain bow. These are on sale at Shoes.com and while not the extraordinary value the Mizrahi dresses are, where else will you find such a superb use of grosgrain ribbon on a sandal? Exactly.

JOan & David Marjean Sandal with Grosgrain Preppy Bow

To compensate for your little splurge on the sandals, you will appreciate the exquisite good taste and economic appeal of a vintage Judith Leiber bag on eBay. Originally purchased at I. Magnin (or at least we think so looking at the label on the interior of the bag), this clutch-style bag can be carried by its crystal studded chain, or used as a clutch and of course, you know which option The Princess recommends. This treasure is the real deal, it is in immaculate condition and even comes with its own little comb! Let’s chat for a moment about the bag’s ability to also provide you a timeless style statement: a Leiber is a classic, and so are you. End of story.

Of course one never knows these days whether the temperature inside the theatre will be bone-chilling cold or makeup-melting hot, so it’s imperative you bring a wrap. The Princess thought perhaps the oversized blue floral Versace scarf or lovely Emilio Pucci draped over your shoulders would work, both at Bluefly.com.

If these don’t whet your whistle, how is McMommy feeling about a Diane von Furstenburg oversized scarf in a lush linen and cotton blend that is oh-so-soft against the skin?

Or the Missoni woven shawl wrap in one of their always elegant knits? We do hope this McMommy sorta’ kinda’ McCharlotte Party Frockage look we’ve created meets with approval. If not, do let the McPrincess know where we went wrong, so that we might amend our outlook for the next premiere of a SATC film. It is only a matter of time……yes?

Help Me Understand #2: We Need Help with Sex and the City “Style”

If it’s May then it must be time for another installment of “Help Me Understand,” our little feature asking, well, “What were they thinking?” And it would hardly be an edition of HMU (Help Me Understand) if we did not start out with a little something from Alexander McQueen, and oh my gosh, what do we see…? Could it be…? A pair of …? A pair of outrageous shoes? The Princess is kicking off an edition of HMU with a pair of shoes. Be still my beating heart. And once again the lucky designer is Mr. McQueen, as we gaze upon something that appears to be an objet d’art, almost museum quality in its design, clearly more suited for display in such an establishment, most definitely not something to adorn anyone’s precious little tootsies. Honestly.

Allright, inhale. Exhale. Deep breathing. Okay, here we go. You see, The Princess does understand she is about to tread on hallowed, dare we say sacred ground, so please (puh-leeze) TP begs, no more email death threats? (We ask you to consider the possibility, merely the possibility, that the entire SATC wardrobe topic is being taken a tad too seriously if one’s blood pressure becomes that elevated?)

SATC SJP Hat SATC London Premiere NY Post SJP Outfit

Yes, today The Princess asks the question, “Help Me Understand the Sex and the City Fashion Disasters Designs,” as she is more-than-perplexed by the extraordinary fashions in the film, as well as some of those worn by the stars of the movie to its London premiere. For example, Sarah Jessica Parker was lovely in an Alexander McQueen dress and heels (you see, The Princess can be ‘fair and balanced’ on the topic of Mr. McQueen!) at the movie’s London premiere, but then there is the issue of the Philip Treacy hat. We are familiar with brilliant Treacy creations of the past, absolutely gorgeous designs. In fact he has designed some utterly divine handbags, very tailored, clean lines, structured, and yours truly is more than ga-ga over them. And we realize Ms. Parker was expected to “push the envelope” in her attire and accessories. But to be honest, The Princess’s immediate reaction was (and remains) no pun intended, what was up with that hat? However, in an effort to demonstrate equanimity we’ll accept this was the height of fashionable good taste and move on to the issue of style (there’s a liberal use of the word) in the film itself, where it would seem we encounter the following:

SATC Sex and the City Hideous Outfit #1Sex and the City Outfit #1

And thus the debate begins. The Princess has been blessed (or cursed) with substantial exposure to fashion over the years from ready to wear to couture, Tarjay to Barneys, American to European, all of it commencing at an early age, so she is not entirely without some background in the topic. And she is at a loss in comprehending the appeal of the garments seen above. Or below for that matter, other than to comment that when gazing upon the photo of the floral frock (below left) it looks like the designer took a tip from the Scarlett O’Hara School of Design: you remember, you rip the draperies off the wall and stitch up a little something. Except Katie Scarlett put together a lovely gown to wear to the local jail, while Carrie looks like she is wearing the sofa, or draperies. And up above, could we ask about the turquoise colored inner-tube-looking item? Is that technically an embellishment? An applique? What precisely is that? Pashmina on steroids? We are most confused by that. These unfortunate little numbers are not even flattering to Her Sexiness, IOMHO (In Our Most Humble Opinion), and SJP has a fabulous physique. Not that this was designed with you, or I, or Jane Q Public in mind, but can you imagine the ‘average’ female wearing this to, oh, say the Bridge Hampton Antique Show at the Historical Society in August? (Let us just utter our own little ‘OMG’ at the mere thought of that.) You know, your average Size 14 or so sort of shoehorned into this? This is not Yonkers and we don’t believe the cabbage patch fabric is a spandex blend, so let your imagine run rampant and you can see the horrors that might ensue. (We thought you might understand.)

SATC Sex and the City Hideous Dress #3

It does not appear that all apparel in the film is excessive, self-indulgent or wretched, as evidenced by ‘Samantha’s’ white Dior suit seen below. In fact, we adore the Oscar de la Renta polka dots for Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and her sweet little trench coat in pink. Is it possible the majority of the crimes against the Fashion Gods are worn primarily by Ms. Parker? Is this something The Princess would not even consider questioning if there were a vulcan mind-meld and she suddenly absorbed all knowledge of all things SATC? Our ignorance is obvious as you would expect at this point in the post, to be sure.

In stark contrast, the party frocks at the Berlin premiere (seen below) looked just stunning, although Kim appears a bit out of step in the bright orange frock; something’s just not right with the draping on that garment. The to-die-for ensemble of course, is SJP’s Roger Vivier dress, shoes and clutch, it is truly the epitome of understated elegance. Now the word is that the shoes were adorned with 22K gold appliques; this is something we read in the ever-so-fabulous Fashion Week Daily.

In the interest of full disclosure TP does feel the need to reveal that she is something of a SJP fan, admiring of her capacity to rebound after being dropped by the Gap and create an astounding business with her Bitten clothing line. We hold no grudge against Ms. Parker whatsoever, let alone anyone in, or associated with, the film or television series. We just don’t understand all the hoo-ha, so to speak (that’s a highly technical term, hoo-ha) about the fashion in the series and the film.

At this juncture TP must cease her comments on the SATC style topic, although she is more than eager to hear your opinions on this issue as she is most confused and would like to understand. We leave you with a shot from season 1 for your viewing pleasure.

The Times asks: Is Sarah Jessica Parker’s Dress the Cheapest in the World?

Steve & Barry\'s SJP Dress

Is This the World’s Cheapest Dress? asks Eric Wilson. For those who may not have seen Thursday’s NY Times, writer Eric Wilson raises the question in his story about Steve and Barry’s, the retailing phenomenon with stores where the most expensive items are just $8.98. That price point includes the dress shown above, from actress Sarah Jessica Parker’s ‘Bitten’ line of clothing. The article looks at Parker’s role with the company as well as the retailer’s philosophy and merchandising mantra. What The Princess found amazing was the story’s popularity online, as it was still the most popular story on the paper’s site at 5pm Friday evening. But then a little voice asked “How many stories on the front pages of every newspaper do you really need to read before remembering: “It’s the economy stupid!”? Or, as is popularly said these days, “Duh!”. BTW, a visit to the Steve & Barry’s website reveals that part of that philosophy mean capitalizing on the Sex and the City craze, one of the few phenoms giving Steve and Barry’s a run for their money.
