The Princess is Unhappy, More Inaugural Party Frock Sketches

Hello-Hello everyone… did we all enjoy a splendid beginning of the New Year? We certainly hope so, it seems everyone is more than ready to turn a corner, although just which corner to select is up for debate.

Unfortunately, TP is feeling completely distraught. Why? Perhaps the photo below will provide a clue.

Non? Un autre….

Still not sure?

We are talking about the Hay-Adams Hotel in Washington.  One of the better-kept secrets inside the beltway. It is a fabulous little establishment, of the sort commonly referred to as a boutique hotel.  Its location is nothing less than perfect. From one’s room you can gaze upon Lafayette Park, St. John’s or the White House, among other attractions. The obvious question: precisely how is this establishment causing TP such distress? To be fair, it isn’t the establishment, rather the change in administrations.

You see, most students return to school after the weekend. This includes two darling little girls who are in the process of relocating to the District, Sasha and Malia Obama.  Classes begin for them Monday at Sidwell Friends, and the family is temporarily moving into the Hotel to ensure the girls start their studies on time. Blair House, where the family might usually stay during the last weeks of the transition, is occupied until January 15.

It is really the only place we stayed when in town, unless we were attending a business convention of the sort requiring everyone be at “the official hotel.” (You know the usual suspects: the Mayflower, the Shoreham, etc.) We fear all the media attention and exposure will result in the Hotel becoming one of the latest “it” spots, and it shall be completely overrun with people. Perhaps we worry too much and all of the hubbub will amount to nothing?  Hopefully so. In the interim, we shall stop whining and discuss something more upbeat.

For example, the story serves as a reminder we haven’t shared all of the sketches submitted by designers for the Obama girls Inaugural apparel, like these two looks from Lucy Sykes:

Unfortunately, neither of these register at the Prepalicious level, IOHO, although we do like the little pearl studs.

They both appear almost run of the mill, a surprise coming from this designer, one of TP’s favorites for children’s apparel. The Bonnie Young creations are fun, and the jewel tones a good idea, sure to complement whatever color scheme is selected by their mother, Michelle Obama.

We really can’t offer an opinion on the Rodarte… everyone looks like an alien being, come for a visit with the earthlings, no?

Our final look today for the Obama girls comes from Eliza Gran, often featuring looks inspired by vintage creations. We promise to share more in our next post.

We are enamored of the style used for this sketch, complete with the crayon-style drawing and the inclusion of the “dog” in the lower right corner!

Also from Women’s Wear Daily, nominations for MVP, or “Most Visible Players” in their story “The Ubiquitors of 2008.”  WWD’s Eye column ranked a number of celebrities, primarily using their number of appearances on photo websites as a criteria.  Who’s Number One?

Scott Rudd

The column ranks the entire cast of Gossip Girl in first place; above, stars Ed Westwick, Chace Crawford, Blake Lively and Penn Badgley.

The feature shows more G2 photos, including a shot of off-screen couple Blake Lively & Penn Badgley, as well as Leighton Meester, another one of the show’s female leads.  (Please tell me us that isn’t a romper she is wearing…?!)

Kristen Somody Whalen

Here’s how the article ranked the individual stars:

THE CAST OF “GOSSIP GIRL”
The group of young hotties is thoroughly enjoying its newfound fame.
Total: 189 (combined)
Leighton Meester: 45
Chace Crawford: 34
Jessica Szohr: 33
Taylor Momsen: 22
Penn Badgley: 20
Ed Westwick: 18
Blake Lively: 17

We openly acknowledge still having no clue as to how the votes were tallied, but we somehow think it isn’t critical that we comprehend this part of the story.  And it is also time for our usual disclaimer explaining that somehow we have not watched an episode of Gossip Girl, but after all, we’re in a new year and anything can happen…

Others included in WWD’s list of MVPs include Brooke Shields, the Olsen twins, and Becky Newton of “Ugly Betty” fame.

A reminder that nominations are still open for our own awards, 2008’s AntiPrep of the Year, along with the Preppiest Person of 2008. (This was a little something started in the Princess Consort’s post from New Year’s Day.) We thought Muffy Martini should get off the fence and let us know her true feelings instead of being so wishy-washy:

“Anti Prep goes to Paris. She is SIMPLY horrid.”

And Mrs. Newlywed offers a number of possibilities:

“Anti-Prep? Lindsay Lohan for sure.

Prep? This one is tougher, but I am going to go with Cynthia Rowley. I think she did a stellar job with her Target line, and while her fall line was somewhat questionable. She is consistently on top of preppy fashion.

I am sure there are more, but I wanted to pick someone unique…not one of the Gossip Girls…especially since I don’t know their names.”

Belle in Bloom also gives us some suggestions:

“I’ll have to agree with everyone on the anti-prep. Paris Hilton. yikes.

For preppiest…I just don’t know. I do love Anderson Cooper. Can’t wait to see who is picked. Fun.”

On that note, don’t be shy – share your thoughts! Grins and Giggles until next time, we hope you enjoy a stellar weekend!!

The Tory Burch Sofa, “Preppy Tec” & Barack Obama Inaugural Sketches (including Vineyard Vines)

Hello-Hello and Happy Day!

We have a number of quick topics we shall fly through this blustery day, but first we must say “Thank you” to everyone playing along in what has been dubbed the ‘Quiz the Consort Post‘ from this weekend!  In case you missed it, the Consort did a post about the next Giveaway, and all anyone need do to enter is leave a comment on any post asking the Consort a Question! (Frankly, we are a bit concerned; does anyone really think we need to encourage his behavior? Honestly.)

First, the Tory Burch Couch at Nordstrom, part of their Ultimate Gift Collection.

The group of upscale gifts was introduced the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, partly in response to the Black Friday discounts at Nordie’s competitors. Other items in the six-piece Collection include a family portrait sitting with noted photographer Sam Jones; there are two of these packages at $50,000 per package.  Perhaps of more interest to TPP readers, an armoire loaded with “everything from the world of Juicy” at $15,000.  FYI, these items are only available online.

If not inclined to partake of the Ultimate Gifts, the Nordstrom sale continues, providing an opportunity for today’s Pretty in Pink! For your consideration we offer the Smythe Quilted Mini Jacket, at $384.90, 40% off the original selling price. Free shipping with purchases over $100 is also available through the 18th; the promo code is HOLIDAY08.

And speaking of Tory Burch, we neglected to mention she opened her new shop in Manhattan last week.  Located in the Meatpacking District, it is just one of five the designer plans to open in the next year.

It is the second Manhattan location for Ms. Burch, who is hoping to expand into the Home category in 2009.  And she is relaunching the Tory Burch website within the next two weeks.

We learned a new term today, “Techno-Prep.” This comes from online fashion retailer ASOS.com, described in part below by Ian Bryder, in charge of the company’s Menswear Design.

“For our Preppy trend – which we’ve christened ‘Preppy Tec’ – we’re presenting a sharp, contemporary take on the classic American Ivy League look but with a softer, more colourful palette, influenced by the Italian Paninaro scooter gangs that influenced terrace fashions of the 80’s and 90’s.

In describing their Spring/Summer 2009 Men’s collection the UK-based retailer also notes:

“Collegiate takes a new direction, fusing the classic all-American preppy look with urban sportswear influences to create a sharper, more contemporary feel. ‘Ivy League’ shirts and college sweats are updated…”

There you have it. Indeed.

And for those unable to sleep peacefully at night for wont of worrying about precisely what a ‘preppy hotel room’ looks like, TP brings you the following from a story on Hotel Chatter:

“… The Betsy’s new rooms, in all their preppy white and lavender glory, got us all excited…”

The Betsy Hotel

The Betsy Hotel

The story updates progress on the newly renovated Betsy Hotel (we knew it as the Betsy Ross in its former life) in South Beach, scheduled to reopen early in 2009.  While the rooms look lovely, we are not seeing the ‘preppiness’ of the decor; the inability to grasp this is clearly a lack on our part, no doubt.

Following their success with the designer sketches of proposed inaugural gowns for Michelle Obama, WWD repeats the exercise with possible fashions for President-elect Obama from some of the top menswear minds in the US. Below, one of the two looks submitted by Brooks Brothers to Women’s Wear Daily.

Next, a Rag and Bone night look:

Most fun to see? The submission by the gentlemen at Vineyard Vines!

We shall post more of these in coming days; they are fascinating, and more than enjoyable to look at! But if one can’t wait, click here and hopefully WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) will have the story and accompanying photos in the free content potion of their site.  We’ll leave you with a Reem Acra sketch of their vision for the entire Obama family’s Inaugural fashions, including daughters Malia and Sasha.

Inaugural Gown Sketches for Mrs. Obama, Malia & Sasha

Hello and Happy-Happy Day!

The brilliant minds over at WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) have put together some fabulous special issues of late, both online and off.  The story & sketches were released online yesterday, while the issue carrying the story is dated 12/3/08.  The article is entitled  “Michelle Obama: What Should She Wear?

Isaac Mizrahi via WWD

The story by Bridget Foley and Bobbi Queen offers sketches of different inaugural gowns from a broad group of prominent design and fashion houses. Above we see Isaac Mizrahi’s idea for Mrs. Obama along with daughters Malia and Sasha, all of the designs just beautiful.

The always exquisite Monique Lhuillier offers a vision in deep crimson…

The winter white peau de soie by Peter Som is stunning.

As is this Carolina Herrera

And this offering from Badgley Mischka

There are several day looks as well, including this elegant suit from Diane von Furstenberg.

The Tracy Reese design is simply divine. Note the small bow near the left collarbone on the coat; a bit of a trademark for the future First Lady.

The rich purple from Tuleh is also head turning.

Back to the party frocks, with the Elie Tahari submission also showcasing a bow at the neckline.

Betsey Johnson’s effervescence is evident in her design and her drawings:

Regular readers know TP is a huge Oscar fan; we have been for years.

Oscar de la Renta via WWD

But we were a little underwhelmed by his submission.  The red, white and blue theme is certainly patriotic, but Malia Obama’s dress reminds us of something Scarlett O’Hara might have worn and Sasha Obama’s dress doesn’t appear special in any way. Is that just TP being a crankenstein… or do you concur?

Let’s not go all fuddy-duddy here… oh, whyforever not?  It is this with which we struggle: the sleeveless look for young girls, in this case the Obama girls, but you are seeing it everywhere, or so it seems of late. When growing up we simply didn’t go out in public with bare arms at that age, unless perhaps in a sundress for playing on the beach or another equally informal setting.  Even recognizing we were raised in the dark ages, we still don’t find it appropriate for young ladies to be out in the evening in a party frock with straps where the sleeves should be. Harrumph. (Calling all Mothers and Grandmothers… do let us know of your thoughts and preferences on this topic, we would love to hear from you!)

Having done our best to be tedious, here is a look for the Obama girls from Best & Co., showing both the coats and the dresses to be worn underneath.

Best & Co. via WWD

We are thinking the girls’ coats would be a soft wool or wool/cashmere blend with velvet trim and buttons; they are darling. The dresses underneath leave us a little flat.

The Koi Suwannagate dress for the future First Lady is a little frou-frou for us, but if anyone could pull it off, Michelle Obama probably could.

Michael Kors‘ design is classic elegance…

The Christian Lacroix look seems a little fierce.

We shall leave it at that this evening, but we will share more of the designs, including a fabulous Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel look.

A quick update on the $30,000 ring the President-elect was allegedly buying for Mrs. Obama: there isn’t one.  At least not a ring purchased by Mr. Obama from Italian jewelers Giovanni Bosco.  Our original post here showed the ring, accompanied by some background as well as our open expression of angst over the veracity of the story.

It turns out the Obama office is denying the story according to Tommy Christopher at Political Machine.

“The Obama Press Office told me this: the story is not true, there is no $30,000.00 ring.”

And on that note, g’bye until next time.
