Sneak Peek Polo Spring, Madly Awaiting Sunday

Hello-Hello, and wishes for an ever-so-happy weekend to all of our cherished readers!

We start with a sneak peek at the Spring 2010 collection from Polo Ralph Lauren, if only because a few of the styles look like they would be ideal right now:

The photos are in yesterday’s WWD story on the company’s menswear collections for next year. Pieces from all three Ralph Lauren labels (Blue, Black and Purple) were revealed to fashion editors on Wednesday.  Next, a style from the higher-end Purple Label, the most luxurious of the three lines:

A look from the Black Label group:

The story describes three distinctly different looks within the sportswear collection:

“The first features a mix of vintagey athleticwear (evocative of Ralph Lauren’s Olympic uniforms for Team USA), washed white linens and cricket-player motifs.”

Remember this? It is the Ralph Lauren Team USA Opening Ceremony look referenced in the quote above, as dissected ad nauseam seen in this post and this post.

There’s something to look forward for those engaged in helping the man of the house put his best sartorial foot forward.

As teased in yesterday’s post we are going to share some of the Mad Men frenzy currently washing over many of the media outlets we enjoy visiting here at the Palace.

USAToday has a series of stories, including a review of Sunday’s Season 3 premiere:

“The show gets off to a running start, with each of the major characters forced to confront some personal or professional shift, some of which you’ve seen coming, and some you haven’t.”

The paper also has a story titled “Distinctive ‘Mad Men’ reaches out to today’s style, culture” as well as a trivia quiz.

Below, a shot of Jon Hamm as Don Draper, and January Jones as Betty Draper.

We adore the image used in much of the promotion for Season 3:

Did someone say “metaphor”?

Not to be outdone, the folks over at Men’s Style have come up with “…a look at Don Draper through the years…” to see how he would fare in a variety of settings, beginning with Don visiting I Dream of Jeannie!

Moving beyond the 60’s, Don does Wall Street:

Over at Elle magazine’s online site there is a little quiz as well, asking “Are you a Betty, a Joan or a Peggy?

And the site carries a brief story on Wednesday night’s screening of the Season 3 premiere sponsored by Banana Republic. Below, Jon Hamm arrives at the event.

Banana Republic partnered with AMC, creating a “Banana Republic Mad Men Style Guide“.  Many readers have already seen the specially decorated store windows showcasing the joint marketing effort.

Those wondering about a preppy connection to the show need only look at the endless number of bloodies consumed as a therapeutic tonic, or enjoy some of the fashions. (Not to mention the story line includes several blue bloods with money qualifying as ‘old.’)

Of course, there are the many references to the program’s fashions, as well as this mention of Jon Hamm’s style sense:

“…he grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, sporting head-to-toe prep gear…”

That tidbit comes via this story, and then we have one last snippet compliments of a story in today’s Women’s Wear Daily:

“Be it the critical acclaim and copious marketing budget of “Mad Men,” the retro mystique of his character Don Draper, or let’s face it, Jon Hamm’s chiseled physique and personal charm, the actor is undeniably having a moment.”

There you have it dollfaces, on the eve of another wedding weekend for TP and The Consort, we send fervent hopes your weekends are simply divine. You know that ours is going to end on a high note starting at 10pm EDT on AMC-TV. We’ll look for you there.

French Open Blues, Longchamp is Pretty in Pink & Rafa Nadal…Preppy?

Hello-Hello, and happy first week of June! Yippee!

Has everyone been watching the goings-on at Roland Garros? Some amazing things, we must say, and not all of them involving the actual play, although we were stunned to see the early ouster of Rafael Nadal. No, we’re talking once again about the fashions at this year’s French Open, and feeling like we didn’t get the blue memo.

Above left, Roger Federer and on the right, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic. Below, we see Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka (R) and Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic.

Also in blue tones with teal and turquoise, Maria Sharapova.

Is it just us, or does this style almost make Ms. Sharapova look matronly? A difficult thing to achieve given the tennis star’s natural beauty.  Below, Roumania’s Sorana Cirstea sports similar colors.

Two more in blue, Juan Martin del Porto of Argentina (L) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, France.

If blue isn’t your hue, then there is always our favorite color: pink! Below, superstar Rafa Nadal.

The Nike Bold Open tennis polo Mr. Nadal is wearing is available online.

The Spanish heartthrob was also in pink for the news conference following his loss to Sweden’s Robin Soderling. In fact, we’ll just declare that both of the pink tops qualify as today’s Pretty in Pink.

Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova was in the pink as well, paired with black.

Next, China’s Na Li in what is rapidly becoming a popular combination, hot pink and orange (or a peachy salmon/coral).

Serena Williams donned a similar orange offset by dark gray.

In the photo directly above Mr. Nadal is in a Nike shirt and Tommy Hilfiger khakis, the white linen suit in the first image is Ralph Lauren Purple Label.

As always, for the true insider’s scoop on all the tennis happenings, toddle over to see Rich at Down the Line Tennis, as he seems to know simply everything that’s happening on the circuit.

New Spending Laws for the Wealthy, Polo Ralph Lauren Fall 2009 Early Look

Hello everybody, and happy weekend! Whoo-hoo!

We start today with a big “Thank You” to the fabulous All Things Southern & Preppy for bestowing upon us the Love Ya’ Award!

Rules do accompany this honor:

“These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers. Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award.”!

Without further ado, our eight suggestions:

Look for the menswear at Polo Ralph Lauren to go back to its roots this fall; that’s according to this feature in a recent edition of Women’s Wear Daily.

This applies to every label in the line, starting with Polo (seen above), continuing its classic tradition, while Purple Label keeps its sophisticated styling touches. (Below, Purple Label.)

As one would expect, Black Label pieces (seen below) retain the edgier, more modern look aimed at a younger, trendier demo.

As we are already on the topic, there is a significant Ralph Lauren clearance continuing online and in stores.  Even the Create Your Own for Baby collection is on sale, with those two charmers below modeling two of the many styles offered.

The superb writers over at the Wealth Report (one of the outstanding blogs from the Journal, hopefully still staffed after Friday’s staff cuts at the paper) have come up with “The News Rules of Spending for the Rich,” some new “…Laws for the age of Obama…” like this:

“BLING The wearing of $300 jeans, $300,000 watches that don’t tell time and visible jewels larger than a grain of kosher salt are strictly forbidden. All bling should be partially or completely concealed, although five-carat diamond tongue studs can be acceptable for women and men who “stir out of the city by night.”

Not to mention this:

“PARTIES Expenses for birthday parties and Sweet Sixteens aren’t to exceed $2 million.”

Perhaps that translates into things like this….

… possibly being outlawed? The item above is from designer Jemal Wright’s Isis Collection; the Swarovski-covered monstrosity runs about $75,000.  If this is just a little too gauche, the entire piece doesn’t have to be covered in the crystals. One can opt for a more subtle touch.

Those using Facebook are no doubt familiar with the “25 Random Things About Me” syndrome. For those not entirely clear on the phenomenon, it is exactly as it sounds: you are ‘tagged’ and must write 25 things about yourself people are unlikely to know.

The popularity of this exercise is such that even the Old Gray Lady (the Times) is even writing about it in “Want to Know More About Me?“.  One person interviewed for the story offers a suggestion for the popularity:

“We’ve all had that awkward pause after we initially find an old friend and exchange a few e-mails, and you don’t know what else to say,” he said. “This is a socially acceptable way to tell people what you’ve been up to without seeming totally obnoxious.”

Oh. We missed that part.  We have resisted the 25 Things tags received thus far on Facebook; be assured no such tagging will be targeted your way, as we remain steadfast in our resistance to the  any of our dear readers and friends here in the Blogosphere.

+++++++++++++++++++++

On that note we say G’bye until next time!

Early Look at Ralph Lauren, Zegna & Burberry Spring 2009 Collections

Ralph Lauren Spring 2009 #1

Crazy as it sounds, fashion’s heavy hitters just finished showing their Spring/Summer 2009 Menswear collections in Paris and the different looks have been amazing. (And yes, a few are fodder for the “Help Me Understand” feature here at the Prepatorium.) We thought we would share a few with you. Above, two looks from the Ralph Lauren Purple Label line. Always brilliant, Suzy Mehnkes writes in the IHT (International Herald Tribune):

Ralph Lauren‘s neckties were so big, bold and colorful that it was as if the American designer, in his first presentation in Paris, were determined to bring the focus back on the symbol of men at work.

“The purple man is confident,” Lauren said in his program notes, referring to the Purple Label collection that has always been focused on the seductive, shapely pinstripes that seem like a caricature of the big boss. With them went ties as wide and bright as could fit under the lapels. But, significantly, Lauren had expanded the range by including upper-end sportswear – mostly jockey club elegant (think molded leather and race horses on the neckties) but also smart casual wear. That included not just the made-over vintage tennis looks but also ultra-light raincoats in high-tech fabrics.

We also took a glance at some of the Polo Ralph Lauren looks for the Resort/Spring 08/09 Women’s Collections.

Ralph Lauren Resort 2008/09 Womens

Another favorite of The Princess, along with several siblings and The Princess Consort, is Ermenegildo Zegna, his tailoring skills evident in every part of the suit seen below. Zegna Pink Suit

Below right we have a divine piece from Loro Piana who makes just about the finest cashmere a Princess can buy, here with an ultra-light bomber jacket and on the right Burberry Prorsum’s “Crumpled Classics” collection designed by Christopher Bailey.

Burberry 2009 Look

One FYI for true blue Burberry fans: if you would like to watch the entire Burberry 2009 runway show online you can do by clicking here or going to their front page. The same option is also available to the ladies, simply click on the Womenswear Link.

Madmen NY TImes magazine

And now a gentle nudge for all the “Mad Men” fans out there: the Season 1 DVD is now available for your viewing pleasure! And for those who may not yet have seen it, get ready! This one is a must, absolutely, positively… a must. Non-fans are asking why all the hoo-hah, and well, to be frank Princess, why the somewhat dictatorial tone of this portion of the post?

We apologize if we sound overbearing, we just become so excited about little things like this that at times we find it difficult to maintain the proper level of decorum. Now back to the show! If you’ve not watched it, the show is set in 1960s New York, following high-powered advertising men on Madison Avenue, the women who love them, and it is edgy. The costumes and sets are just TDF (to die for), not to mention the hair and makeup; the whole thing definitely has an air of fantabulosity to it! And remember, Season 2 Premieres Sunday, July 27 at 10pm on AMC, so check your listings or go to amctv.com If you don’t care to wait that long to get in touch with the program there is an ‘official’ blog on the amc site and there is also a recently released music CD, Mad Men: Music from the Series, Vol. 1.
