Ralph Lauren’s $2000 Jeans, The Preppy Pup, That Dirty Shirley Fabric

Hello-Hello, it is one gorgeous morning here at The Prepatorium, bright, beautiful, and still very snowy. Sigh.  We do hope those enjoying the day off yesterday were able to revel in some relaxation and savor their time away from the daily hum-drum.

We should call this post “Tidbit Tuesday,” as we have many little updates, but no overarching theme (another classic example of our poor planning and). We begin with Ralph Lauren’s move into the luxury denim market, Women’s Wear Daily broke the story:

“The designer has introduced a luxury denim line, Ralph Lauren Collection Denim, that aims to reinvent the American classic by giving it a more luxurious twist than ever before. And he’s doing tops, blouses and shearling outerwear to go with it.”

Below, several images from the upcoming line.

Marc Karimzadeh’s story explains there will be more than denim in the new collection.

A number of the styles are more than attractive.

While others hold absolutely no appeal.

One item we shouldn’t overlook – price points for the new line, for that information we head back to WWD’s story.

“The collection will hit stores in July and will carry a suggested retail price tag from about $300 to $2,000.”

Oh.

Next, we bring you an update on That. Perfume.

Courtesy Coty

People magazine did a brief story last month about the primary “face” of the ad campaign, “Hollywood Royalty Zoe Kravitz on Being a Preppy Princess,” she is seen wearing the tiara in the advertisement shown above. From the People story:

“The self-professed flea market shopper is, however, just as familiar with classic preppy style, having spent some time going to school on New York City’s tony Upper East Side.”

It makes sense to use Ms. Kravitz for this campaign, as she was the primary face used back when the original Princess scent was released. At any rate, our primary reason for sharing this is because we continue to receive inquiries about the perfume: do we, or shall we be selling the perfume? No, and no.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The dreary weather has made us yearn even more for a glimpse of spring’s bright colors and vibrant hues.

Givenchy

No, we aren’t resorting to Rorschach Test images, that is a look from the advertising campaign for Givenchy’s upcoming cosmetics collection, Acid Summer. And while not something we are likely to indulge in, we do appreciate the saturated colors of the advertising images.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have a brief update on the upcoming Lilly Pulitzer for Lee Jofa fabrics line, one image from the line has slipped out here on the interwebs. (Oh my.)

Via Matters of Style Marketplace

Some Lilly lovers may recognize the “Dirty Shirley” pattern, definitely today’s Pretty in Pink. The piece is actually for sale at Matters of Style Marketplace, sister site to one our favorite blogs, the always-stellar Matters of Style.  (Well worth a visit today, as this morning’s post is all about nautical style.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have previously featured these, but seeing the photos again in AOL’s Paw Nation made us want to do it again.

RoverDog via PawNation

The coats are created by the talented folks at Rover Dog, and Jaime Derringer profiled the company in a delightful post, “The Rise of the Preppy Pup“.

“No, this isn’t an outtake from the latest J.Crew catalog photo shoot. Preppy pups are in. It’s the newest trend, and leading the pack is the self-proclaimed “J.Crew of the dog world,” Rover.”

If more interested in madras or seersucker for your four-legged family member, here are two possibilities.

RoverDog on etsy

While we don’t dress Tilly (because she’s too tubby, she would need a triple-XL!), we know some friends do enjoy the practice, so we are always on the lookout for items capable of making the appropriate style statement.

With that, we say adieu until next time!

Sneak Peek Polo Spring, Madly Awaiting Sunday

Hello-Hello, and wishes for an ever-so-happy weekend to all of our cherished readers!

We start with a sneak peek at the Spring 2010 collection from Polo Ralph Lauren, if only because a few of the styles look like they would be ideal right now:

The photos are in yesterday’s WWD story on the company’s menswear collections for next year. Pieces from all three Ralph Lauren labels (Blue, Black and Purple) were revealed to fashion editors on Wednesday.  Next, a style from the higher-end Purple Label, the most luxurious of the three lines:

A look from the Black Label group:

The story describes three distinctly different looks within the sportswear collection:

“The first features a mix of vintagey athleticwear (evocative of Ralph Lauren’s Olympic uniforms for Team USA), washed white linens and cricket-player motifs.”

Remember this? It is the Ralph Lauren Team USA Opening Ceremony look referenced in the quote above, as dissected ad nauseam seen in this post and this post.

There’s something to look forward for those engaged in helping the man of the house put his best sartorial foot forward.

As teased in yesterday’s post we are going to share some of the Mad Men frenzy currently washing over many of the media outlets we enjoy visiting here at the Palace.

USAToday has a series of stories, including a review of Sunday’s Season 3 premiere:

“The show gets off to a running start, with each of the major characters forced to confront some personal or professional shift, some of which you’ve seen coming, and some you haven’t.”

The paper also has a story titled “Distinctive ‘Mad Men’ reaches out to today’s style, culture” as well as a trivia quiz.

Below, a shot of Jon Hamm as Don Draper, and January Jones as Betty Draper.

We adore the image used in much of the promotion for Season 3:

Did someone say “metaphor”?

Not to be outdone, the folks over at Men’s Style have come up with “…a look at Don Draper through the years…” to see how he would fare in a variety of settings, beginning with Don visiting I Dream of Jeannie!

Moving beyond the 60’s, Don does Wall Street:

Over at Elle magazine’s online site there is a little quiz as well, asking “Are you a Betty, a Joan or a Peggy?

And the site carries a brief story on Wednesday night’s screening of the Season 3 premiere sponsored by Banana Republic. Below, Jon Hamm arrives at the event.

Banana Republic partnered with AMC, creating a “Banana Republic Mad Men Style Guide“.  Many readers have already seen the specially decorated store windows showcasing the joint marketing effort.

Those wondering about a preppy connection to the show need only look at the endless number of bloodies consumed as a therapeutic tonic, or enjoy some of the fashions. (Not to mention the story line includes several blue bloods with money qualifying as ‘old.’)

Of course, there are the many references to the program’s fashions, as well as this mention of Jon Hamm’s style sense:

“…he grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, sporting head-to-toe prep gear…”

That tidbit comes via this story, and then we have one last snippet compliments of a story in today’s Women’s Wear Daily:

“Be it the critical acclaim and copious marketing budget of “Mad Men,” the retro mystique of his character Don Draper, or let’s face it, Jon Hamm’s chiseled physique and personal charm, the actor is undeniably having a moment.”

There you have it dollfaces, on the eve of another wedding weekend for TP and The Consort, we send fervent hopes your weekends are simply divine. You know that ours is going to end on a high note starting at 10pm EDT on AMC-TV. We’ll look for you there.

New Spending Laws for the Wealthy, Polo Ralph Lauren Fall 2009 Early Look

Hello everybody, and happy weekend! Whoo-hoo!

We start today with a big “Thank You” to the fabulous All Things Southern & Preppy for bestowing upon us the Love Ya’ Award!

Rules do accompany this honor:

“These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers. Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award.”!

Without further ado, our eight suggestions:

Look for the menswear at Polo Ralph Lauren to go back to its roots this fall; that’s according to this feature in a recent edition of Women’s Wear Daily.

This applies to every label in the line, starting with Polo (seen above), continuing its classic tradition, while Purple Label keeps its sophisticated styling touches. (Below, Purple Label.)

As one would expect, Black Label pieces (seen below) retain the edgier, more modern look aimed at a younger, trendier demo.

As we are already on the topic, there is a significant Ralph Lauren clearance continuing online and in stores.  Even the Create Your Own for Baby collection is on sale, with those two charmers below modeling two of the many styles offered.

The superb writers over at the Wealth Report (one of the outstanding blogs from the Journal, hopefully still staffed after Friday’s staff cuts at the paper) have come up with “The News Rules of Spending for the Rich,” some new “…Laws for the age of Obama…” like this:

“BLING The wearing of $300 jeans, $300,000 watches that don’t tell time and visible jewels larger than a grain of kosher salt are strictly forbidden. All bling should be partially or completely concealed, although five-carat diamond tongue studs can be acceptable for women and men who “stir out of the city by night.”

Not to mention this:

“PARTIES Expenses for birthday parties and Sweet Sixteens aren’t to exceed $2 million.”

Perhaps that translates into things like this….

… possibly being outlawed? The item above is from designer Jemal Wright’s Isis Collection; the Swarovski-covered monstrosity runs about $75,000.  If this is just a little too gauche, the entire piece doesn’t have to be covered in the crystals. One can opt for a more subtle touch.

Those using Facebook are no doubt familiar with the “25 Random Things About Me” syndrome. For those not entirely clear on the phenomenon, it is exactly as it sounds: you are ‘tagged’ and must write 25 things about yourself people are unlikely to know.

The popularity of this exercise is such that even the Old Gray Lady (the Times) is even writing about it in “Want to Know More About Me?“.  One person interviewed for the story offers a suggestion for the popularity:

“We’ve all had that awkward pause after we initially find an old friend and exchange a few e-mails, and you don’t know what else to say,” he said. “This is a socially acceptable way to tell people what you’ve been up to without seeming totally obnoxious.”

Oh. We missed that part.  We have resisted the 25 Things tags received thus far on Facebook; be assured no such tagging will be targeted your way, as we remain steadfast in our resistance to the  any of our dear readers and friends here in the Blogosphere.

+++++++++++++++++++++

On that note we say G’bye until next time!

Saks Closing Bridal Salons, Talbot’s Going the Outlet Route?

The Princess is a little down and depressed despite the lovely day; her countenance changed markedly upon learning that Saks Fifth Avenue is closing all of its bridal salons except for those at the Beverly Hills store and the NY Flagship. Hunh? This was simply one of the places where everyone went when looking for a wedding gown, even sometimes for a dress for one’s coming out. We didn’t end up purchasing our gown there, but still….sniff.  Does anyone have a tissue?

According to the story in yesterday’s WWD, the company plans to hold Bridal sales starting in January, running through May, in the following locations:

“…. South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif.; Houston; Atlanta; St. Louis; Tysons Corner, Va.; Richmond; Bal Harbour, Fla.; Birmingham, Ala.; Boca Raton, Fla.; Columbus, Ohio; Chicago; Indianapolis; Plano, Tex.; San Francisco, Short Hills, N.J., and Dallas.”

Some of the bridal designers carried by Saks that one will soon need to find elsewhere:

Amsale, Angel Sanchez, Carolina Herrera, Christos, Edgardo Bonilla, Elizabeth Fillmore, Jenny Packham, Junko Yoshioka, Kenneth Pool, Melissa Sweet, Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta, Platinum, Reem Acra, Tomasina, Ulla Maija and Vera Wang.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We also have news on Talbots: that struggling retailer has announced they will be opening 12 new outlet stores next year.  According to the Boston Herald Talbots plans to open thirty outlets in the next three years. From our calculations it seems this would at least double Talbots outlet presence, but do keep in mind, we are talking Princess Math here.

Talbots is offering an Additional 30% off everything online, as well as free shipping and delivery with no minimum purchase. For example, the Stretch sateen sheath dresses that were originally $110, now running $48.99 and $41.99 before the extra 30% off.  (The dresses would be about $34.30 and $29.40.)

Kate Spade is doing an additional 25% off everything now on sale, including the Giverny Trench.

Along with the Pop Clinton Street Nedette, the credit card case with the little change pocket, available in a pair of holiday colors:

The sales at both Steven Alan Collection and the Annex offer outstanding merchandise at very good price points.  The women’s cashmere Shawl Collar Cardigan is almost irrestible at this price, with a snuggle factor that is off the charts!

Lilly Pulitzer Fall merchandise is 70% off at the Cloister Collection, including pieces like the Paley Cardigan.

We are also fond of Lilly’s Snappy Skirt in Preppy Twill in our favorite shade, now $29. There seems to be a fair amount of Eliza B. and Eric Javits sale inventory remaining at the Cloister, along with their always-fabulous selection of merchandise.

The email volume being generated by “Sale” updates and notices is becoming almost unmanageable; are you all struggling with the same challenge?  Barney’s is positively shrieking with their flyer about the Men’s Sale:

Barneys New York

The email Bergdorf Goodman sent today was simply amazing. We cannot remember seeing any Bergdorf’s literature showing ‘as much as 75% discounts.’

This includes Ralph Lauren Collection and Ralph Lauren Black Label. The Red Tartan dress is available on sale for Infants Sizes 3, 6 or 9 months, as well as 9-24 month sizes.

Lord and Taylor is doing their Friends and Family discount, with an Extra 25% off Regular and Sale prices (with limited exclusions) in addition to 10% off cosmetics and fragrances.  Use promo code FRIENDS at checkout.

Ann Taylor Loft continues their special promotional offer of an additional 40% off Sale prices.

The ‘helpful suggestions’ along fashion and style lines continue to be offered for the next First Family.  In an interview with Express Night Out jeweler David Yurman suggests that his Belmont Shadow Watch could work for the next President:

“… He’s an Ivy Leaguer but not too preppy. His style is “international.” I’d like to see him wear a “Belmont Shadow” as a weekend watch. We have a new one coming out in six months.”

NeimanMarcus.com

Call the Princess crazy, but we just don’t see the President-elect doing a $4500 “weekend wristwatch.”

A quick argyle update for everyone:

The argyle leggings are crafted of 100% cotton and are available at Pixie Market.

Happy-Happy everyone!
