She Wore McQueen & Cartier, Prince Harry to William: “Wait ’til You See Her”

What a truly splendid wedding.

Referred to as an “act of faith in a world of doubt” this morning’s wedding had us all a-Twitter, literally. The internet crackled with questions we all had: was Kate Middleton wearing a tiara? Who made the dress? What did it look like? Miss Middleton’s secret was kept successfully, even when seeing the bride with her father on the way to Westminster Abbey we couldn’t decipher who created her gown.

AFP/Getty Images

One could almost hear a collective intake of breath when seeing Miss Middleton emerge from the Queen’s Rolls Royce.  This was the shot that wowed the world.

Ben Stansall/AFP/Getty Images

The Alexander McQueen gown was designed by Sarah Burton. It was exquisite.

Getty Images

The dress was both ivory and white, incorporating hand-cut English lace and French Chantilly lace, appliqued by hand. The work was done by artisans from the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace. (Psst, they offer day classes!)

Getty Images

From the Palace news release:

“Individual flowers have been hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.”

Some of us immediately thought of Grace Kelly’s gown, with its similar use of lace and high neck, tasteful and elegant.

Prince William wore the uniform of Colonel of the Irish Guards. He is commissioned in all three armed services, but the Army’s honorary Irish Guards position is his highest military title. The best man, his brother Prince Harry, wore the uniform of Captain of the Household Cavalry, also called the Blues and Royals.

Kate’s sister Pippa did a masterful job managing the train, almost 9′ long.

More on the dress from the news release:

“The ivory satin bodice, which is narrowed at the waist and padded at the hips, draws on the Victorian tradition of corsetry and is a hallmark of Alexander McQueen’s designs.  The back is finished with 58 gazar and organza covered buttons fastened by Rouleau loops.”

Via AOL's Royal Wedding

The veil needed to be simple and it was.  Made of ivory silk tulle, there were no gathers, it wasn’t hooped, just flat, allowing the focus to be on the bride and her gown.

Getty Images

The tiara was by Cartier, loaned to the bride by the Queen, definitely fitting the ‘something borrowed’ category.

AP Television News

‘Something new’ came in the form of a gift from her parents, diamond drop earrings shaped like oak leaves with a pave diamond acorn suspended in the middle. Pippa wore a similar pair, both pair were made by Robinson Pelham, and said to be inspired by the Middleton family’s new coat of arms, which includes oak leaves and acorns.

The bride’s wedding ring was made from Welsh gold by Wartski, an upscale jeweler and antiques firm located in Mayfair. The ring was crafted from a piece of Welsh gold given to the couple by the Queen.

AP Television News

Using Welsh gold for wedding rings is a royal tradition going back almost a century. Wartski is no stranger to Royal commissions, they made Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ wedding rings.

One of the more intriguing questions, “What did Harry say to William?” was answered by The Telegraph, they used a lipreader, evidently he whispered “Wait ’til you see her”.

And William’s words to Kate?

““You look beautiful…Yes, it looks fantastic, it’s beautiful…”

(Please give us a moment to gather ourselves and find another hankie.)

Pippa Middleton was also busy with the other wedding attendants.

Their dresses were made from the same fabric as the wedding gown, and embroidered with their names and the date. We liked their satin flats.

Some have said the Maid of Honour stole the show. She was also in McQueen.

The chic and elegant gown was surprisingly close in color to her sister’s white and ivory dress. While absolutely beautiful, we think the focus remained where it was supposed to be, on the bride. Below, Pippa beams with two of her young charges as they head to the Palace following the ceremony.

The couple are not only well-suited temperamentally, but also physically.

The service itself was lovely, with the British pomp and pageantry that has been perfected over the centuries.

The crowds waiting for the traditional balcony appearance were enormous.

They were not disappointed.

All in all, it was an extraordinary event, to some degree because getting from here…

…is an amazing accomplishment. Doing so as the whole world watches is remarkable.

John Stillwell/Pool/AP

The gown was precisely what it needed to be: breathtaking and understated, with an elegance that will stand the test of time. Classic and contemporary at the same time, it was ‘very Kate’.

After the balcony appearance and the early reception, the couple made a surprise appearance.

Matt Dunham/AP

Who do you think decorated the car?

Christoper Furlong/Getty Images

In opening his homily, the Bishop of London quoted St. Catherine of Siena: ““Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”

We can only hope that is true for the couple as they move forward. It seems they have made a significant step on that path. Echoing what we said earlier this morning on Twitter, I think we all needed a fairy tale. We got that this morning.

We’ll have more later on what other people wore to the wedding, the hits and misses (oh my, there were some fashion faux pas!), and there will also be more later on WhatKateWore.

Until then, may the sun be shining on your corner of the globe!

A Tale of Two Stories, Bridal Party Designer Revealed, Tonight’s Royal Gala

Today’s post is a challenge.

We can’t simply revel in fun and frivolity while ignoring the other news of the day.

Dusty Compton/The Tuscaloosa News/AP

Having personal experience with tornadoes when covering news, we can only say that written descriptions are inadequate.

International Business Times/AP Photo

Above, images from Tuscaloosa last night.

The atmosphere after a tornadic event is beyond explanation, well beyond weird or eerie or any other term I can think of.  The best I can say is it is quiet.  There is an odd silence and the air itself feels funny. Below, north of Centreville, Alabama last night.

We move on to events across the pond, where it is has been a day filled with last-minute rehearsals, comings and goings, smiles and glad-handing, and this evening’s gala for the out-of-town royals.

The day started with one more walk-through at Westminster Abbey; Prince Harry and Kate Middleton were on hand but Prince William did not participate.

Enigma via The Daily Mail

Young attendants took part in the rehearsal as well, below we see 8-year-old Tom Pettifer, one of the page boys, and Lady Louise Windsor, aged 7, she is the daughter of The Earl and Countess of Wessex (aka Prince Edward and his wife Sophie).

Roland Hoskins/The Daily Mail

We do know the young ladies will be wearing dresses by Nicki Macfarlane, below we see designs from the designer’s 2010/2011 collections.  (Be advised if thinking about checking this site, it seems to be melting down from the increased traffic.)

Ms. Macfarlane has done bespoke dresses for some time, only recently did she start offering RTW (ready to wear) designs. Below, another look at Young Master Pettifer and Miss Windsor.

We don’t know if the third young bridesmaid, Eliza Lopes, was at this morning’s run-through or not. We show her below in images from an earlier post on the wedding party.

In addition to hearing about the wedding party’s attire, we are learning what some of the more notable guests will be wearing.  Prince Harry’s guest, Chelsy Davy, will be in two dresses by Alberta Ferretti, for the wedding she will wear aqua with a matching jacket, and for tomorrow night’s party at the palace, a midnight blue one-shouldered design.

A sewing machine. Brilliant.

Oh, the groom? He did a walkabout this evening, greeting those gathered on the processional route.

We have a slight concern about the frock Princess Beatrice selected, parts of it look awfully… shiny. Perhaps this is merely an unfortunate camera angle.

We leave you with two things today, the first, another photo from the couple’s shoot with Mario Testino.

The other is the music you will when all is said and done, and the couple turns, and heads up the aisle and out of the abbey.

Royal Wedding Bits & Bytes

As promised, we have another fabulous update from our Royal Correspondent, Queen Bee Swain!

By now we all have read, heard and watched the list of the wedding party that will be walking down with and standing alongside Prince William and Kate Middleton in about 70 days time.  The choice of the members of this party is very reminiscent of what played out with Prince Charles and Princess Diana- lots of relatives, god-children, long-time family friends- sometimes a combination of all three; also many are relatives of Prince William rather than Kate Middleton, but these are just the public roles, it has been noted that some other family members, including the daughter of Kate’s ne’er do well Uncle Gary (of the infamous “Casa de Bang Bang” in Ibiza narcotics undercover run-in), Tallulah, may have a ‘behind the scenes’ role.

Concurrent with the announcement of who will be some of the most photographed people in the world this year, it should be noted that Prince Harry’s appointment as Best Man breaks tradition- normally a Supporter is named.  However, when Princess Anne married Mark Phillips, who was not a royal, a Best Man was used.  As the royal couple who willingly or not is having their twist on tradition play out, this seems an appropriate nod to tradition and procedure.

For those of you who are not as fanatical as I am, here are a few other items that have quietly surfaced:

O Canada

-This week it was announced that the first official overseas trip that Prince William and Kate Middleton make as a married couple will be a two-week long trip to Canada- arriving in late June to celebrate Canada Day on the 1st of July in Ottawa and also will make a trek to the Arctic.  Obviously if any stops are made in the far-Western part of Ontario, I might just have to make a trip up.

-Last week, Prince William was bestowed an honorary military commission and is now a Colonel in the Irish Guards.  He already has two honorary military ranks; he was made Commodore-in-Chief of Scotland and Submarines and also is Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Coningsby.  The Irish Guards are part of the Army and mostly serve ceremonial duties, but have some members over in Afghanistan right now.  All of this sums up to one thing: more medals/badges/ropes that he can wear at the ceremony at Westminster.  Y-E-S.  Also, by the latest appointment, he would be able to wear the red dress uniform the men of the Army wear, thus re-opening the MONDO debate about just what uniform he will wear.  My money is hedged on the RAF blues he wears as a search and rescue pilot- another peg in this wedding’s attempt at down-playing the grandoise elements of a royal wedding; though I must say that I hope that he wears the black uniform he had been seen in after his Sandhurst passing out- similar to what we see Prince Harry in.  At any rate I am sure that he will not disappoint, how can a royal heir in military dress do anything but?!

-Kate raised a few eyebrows last week when spotted out with Camilla, Camilla’s daughter Laura Lopes (who is mother to one of the bridesmaids) and Kate’s sister Pippa (who is chief bridesmaid) in Knightsbridge at a very posh and very public location for a long lunch, in which it was overheard that the ceiling was too high for trumpets- presumably Westminster.  Too bad nothing else really surfaced other than what they were discussing for their lunch order.  The spotting has further ignited the Diana v. Camilla never-ending-knock-down-drag-out-throwing-of-darts and also Kate’s outfit was torn to bits by Daily Mail agony aunt, Liz Smith, who later offered suggestions for various ensembles Kate has worn out in the past, some as far back as 2005.  Let me just say that Liz takes a very mumsy and uninspired stance on what is appropriate for someone who defies trends and so far has made several international best-dressed lists.  Three cheers that Kate dresses for her self and for her figure and takes a twist of London edginess to make her chic and Sloaney staples very fashion-forward.

-Speaking of Kate Middleton’s clothing, the see-through dress that she famously strutted down the catwalk at a St. Andrews fashion show in 2003 on the very day that Prince William is said to have taken notice to her as more than just a fellow Art History student, is up for auction at Le Galleria on Pall Mall on 17 March at 2pm. Visit www.kerrytaylorauctions.com.  And get this- the designer not only intended the dress to be a skirt, but also isn’t in design any more.

-The Euro royals who have RSVP’d they will be in attendance on the 29th of April: HRH Crown Prince Alexander and HRH Crown Princess Katharine of Yugoslavia, HM King Constantine II and HM Queen Anne-Marie of Greece and HRH Crown Prince Pavlos and Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece (some believed one of their five children- two of which are Prince William’s god-children would have a shot at being a page boy or bridesmaid) and HM King Michael of Romania and members of the Romanian royal family.  I should note that all three of these families are either deposed or former royals; I guess that if one doesn’t exactly have a current kingdom they must chime in earlier than not?

-Lastly, as you likely have heard, Prince William and Kate Middleton will make two public appearances next week, first at Prince William’s military base in Angesley for the christening of a submarine and then the next day at St. Andrew’s University to kick off the 600th anniversary celebrations.  Prince William had confirmed he would serve as the royal patron of this celebration before he and Kate were engaged.  At any rate, how fun to see the two of them on official duty and my imagination runs wild with Kate in a military-inspired look for the Angesley christening and something very tweedy (a look she does so well) up in the Highlands the next day.

Royal Polo, Watching a Mad Man & Lilly’s Latest Collaboration

Hello-Hello!  We are ever-so-happy to be back home at the Prepatorium, but we definitely enjoyed our little trip back east, hectic and frenzied as it was.

We begin with this year’s look at the Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Match this weekend, featuring HRH, Prince Harry.

David Goldman/AP

The competition pitted the Black Watch (yes, the team Polo Ralph Lauren sponsors) against the Prince’s Black Rock team. Below we see Black Watch team captain Nacho Figueras at the New York Stock Exchange last week to help promote the event. (You are not hallucinating, that is a horse seen in the background.)

Ben Hider/Getty

If Mr. Figueras looks familiar, it is likely a result of his work for PRL products, including the Double Black fragrance collection.

Courtesy Polo Ralph Lauren

The athlete describes how he relates to varying PRL fragrances in an interview today with AOL’s StyleList.

“The Polo Black guy is suit-and-tie, in the city, going to the theater, a museum; the side of me that goes to the Hamptons and to the beach with the kids is the Polo Blue side; and the Polo Green is the man with the horses and the farm.

Below we see Mr. Figueras and his family at Sunday’s function, the 3rd Annual Veuve Clicquot match.

Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

The event is a fundraiser for one of the Prince’s charities, the American arm of Sentebale, an organization the Prince founded to help AIDs-stricken children in Lesotho.

Despite being an expert horseman, HRH did take a spill.

David Goldman/AP

These two are perhaps the best known polo players in the world.

Chris Jackson/Getty

As mentioned earlier, Polo Ralph Lauren sponsors the Black Watch team. Merchandise in this collection features Mr. Figueras’ number “2”, below we see the Women’s Black Watch Big Pony polo as well the Men’s version.

It wouldn’t be the Veuve without celebrities, Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner were on hand, as was Gayle King. (Photos by Steve Eichner, WWD)

Designer Rachel Roy and actor Josh Lucas also headed to Governor’s Island for the afternoon’s activities.

As did model Carol Alt.

Neilson Barnard/Getty

Actor Val Kilmer was in seersucker.

Many dress for the festivities.

As with Royal Ascot, hats are encouraged.

Lucas Jackson/Reuters

In this photo one can see HRH Prince Harry (4th from L) and Nacho Figueras (2nd from R) as they pose with teammates after the event.

Stephen Lovekin/Pool/Getty Images

The Prince wasn’t the only royal taking part, HRH Princess Beatrice was also at the match.

Chris Jackson/Getty Images

Of course the activities are not limited to Sunday’s play, there are other functions one must consider, the Princess also attended Saturday’s Veuve Clicquot reception at Greenwich CC. Again, she is with Mr. Clark.

Chris Jackson/Getty

If you missed this weekend’s events, no cause to fret, they do play July 24-August 8 at the Bridgehampton Polo Club; click here to see the schedule for those matches.

Also today, we know a few readers are excited about the July return of Mad Men; something we are totally gaga over occasionally remember if others bring up the topic. (Ahem.) We thought some might enjoy seeing images from this weekend’s Omega Watches launch of its re-designed Constellation line, as Don Draper actor Jon Hamm took part in the celebration.

Also at the party, Adrien Brody, Twilight’s Anna Kendrick and Zhang Ziyi; below we see Ms. Ziyi and Mr. Hamm.

Another relaunch to share, good news for fans of the much-missed Domino magazine: the newly re-done Brides.com site will feature the entire Domino archive.

Brides.com via ShelterPop

Many articles are already up on Brides.com.  Since saying goodbye to Domino 16 months ago we have become very attached to Lonny, an outstanding online shelter publication, but we are happy to learn of this additional resource’s availability.

We have advance warnings reminders about Lilly Pulitzer goods at two different ‘members only’ discount sites.  RueLala will be offering merchandise from the Lilly Pulitzer for Garnet Hill collection beginning at 11am tomorrow (Tuesday, 6/29). Should you need an invitation, simply click here.

Courtesy Garnet Hill via RueLala

One Kings Lane will be offering Lilly merchandise as well, starting at 11am EDT; if seeking an invitation to that site, click here.

We have a look at the latest collaboration for Lilly Pulitzer.

Courtesy Barnes & Noble

The firm has partnered with Barnes & Noble, creating exclusive Lilly totes and covers for the company’s Nook e-reader.  The totes come in Buena Vista (above) and Secret Garden, below.

Courtesy Barnes & Noble

The totes are nylon with braided handles and they have a clear vinyl pouch for one’s e-reader, priced at $69.95.  These are available now online and at Barnes & Noble stores.  Below we show the not-yet-released Nook cases by Lilly.

Courtesy Barnes & Noble via Shopping Blog

These will be available August 5, or they may be reserved here starting July 12; the cases run $49.95 and $59.95.

We cannot leave without sharing a bit about our ever-so-wonderful-evening with one of our favorite partners, Kiel James Patrick.  Kiel and Sarah couldn’t have been nicer hosts Friday evening, arranging a fabulous dinner in the Massachusetts Whaling District.  Some of the lovely setting can be seen in this photo.

Courtesy Kiel James Patrick

Umm, that cocktail in the picture? We’ve nary a clue how it got there. It must be an arm from someone else’s table, yes, that must be what happened. (Heh-heh-heh.)  We extend our thanks to both Sarah and Kiel for an absolutely delightful evening, they are bright, charming and gifted young people.

Royals, Ascots, and Royal Ascot

As promised in yesterday’s post, we are taking a more in-depth look at Royal Ascot.

Before delving into Ascot, a reminder the Royal Family does know how to dress; below we see everyone at this weekend’s Trooping the Colour ceremony.

Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty

Back to the subject at hand, yesterday was Day One at Ascot, and both the Queen and actress Amanda Holden opted for this season’s “it color”.

Today brought more pink; Princess Anne stood out amid a sea of black (L), and Jackie St. Clair (perhaps best known as Simon Cowell’s former girlfriend, good heavens) is on the right.

Clearly, dining before things get underway is a rigorous exercise.

Lending an entirely different meaning to the word “picnic”.

Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty

Back to our topic, the fashion sported by race-goers.

Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty

Above, a vertigo-inducing image,  and below, efforts to avoid a chapeau tragedy.

Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty

Lest there be any confusion regarding proper apparel for watching the activities from the Royal Enclosure, let us we remind readers there are rules.

“Her Majesty’s Representative wishes to point out that only formal day dress with a hat or substantial fascinator will be acceptable. Off the shoulder, halter neck, spaghetti straps and dresses with a strap of less than one inch and miniskirts are considered unsuitable. Midriffs must be covered and trouser suits must be full length and of matching material and colour.”

Also looking smart yesterday, a cousin of the Queen and 34th in line to the throne, Princess Alexandra (L); on the right, the BBC’s Kate Silverton.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex (perhaps better known stateside as Prince Edward’s wife) was in muted tones both yesterday (L) and today (R).

The dress code is not only applicable to the ladies, back to the Official Rules:

“Gentlemen are required to wear either black or grey morning dress, including a waistcoat, with a top hat. A gentleman may remove his top hat within a restaurant, a private box, a private club or that facility’s terrace, balcony or garden. Hats may also be removed within any enclosed external seating area within the Royal Enclosure Garden.”

Luke MacGregor/Reuters

Most of the gentlemen looked topnotch, including soccer star Michael Owen (injured, thus not enduring the vuvuzelas at the World Cup) on the left, and on the right, jockey Frankie Dettori.

To read the full dress code code for those heading for the Royal Enclosure, click here.

The hat on the left is shared on behalf of the delightful Nautical by Nature, on the right, an elegant ensemble in what we’ll call royal blue. (Clearly the Silly Princess was let out today. Sigh.)

We’re not convinced matching one’s escort is necessary.

Alastair Grant/AP

And we must query our cherished readers about this next image: is it just TP, or do these dresses look like something better worn in the boudoir? (They are prompting Paris Hilton Anti-Prep flashbacks for some reason, envision the involuntary eye twitch, the sudden jerking movement of the head.)

Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty

As someone who spent 18 years in broadcasting, naturally we read the Media Guide, you would expect no less. Trust us when we say it is full of amazing information, not all of it what we are used to seeing in such publications.

Vehicular Egress! Ladies, the easiest way to exit a vehicle is to take a firm hold on the back hem of the skirt, twist your body with your legs together until your legs are toward the exiting door of the vehicle, and then stand.

Stuart Wilson/Getty

We are wondering if Australian entertainer Holly Valance (above) needed those pointers?

Here is another tip from the Media Guide for the gentlemen:

Zips Gentlemen ensure these are always done up. A simple schoolboy error can spoil even the most distinguished of outfits!”

Here is a bit of insight from the Media Guide on an essential topic:

…And Hats Simply the Ascot accessory! Wear hats straight on the head or tilted mysteriously over one eye. How a hat looks from the neck up is most important.”

Stuart Wilson/Getty

The Guide also addresses the topic of footwear:

Feet! No pain, no gain! High heels look fabulous but don’t neglect your feet girls! The site is a quarter of a mile long so lady visitors may wish to consider their footwear carefully…or just wear the heels, everyone knows they look great!”

Luke MacGregor/Reuters

It seems someone elected to leave the pain and/or gain behind.

Next, this lovely image of The Queen on her way to today’s events, definitely a Pretty in Pink.

Press Agency

And if one were seeking a Pretty in Pink and Green from Ascot, we can supply that image as well.

If wondering whether Princes William and Harry are enjoying the races, that is a ‘no,’ they are in Botswana.

Chris Jackson/Getty

Above we see Prince Harry and Prince William holding an African rock python yesterday, at an Education Centre they support. The final stop for this Royal duo includes watching the England vs Algeria World Cup match in Cape Town.

The young men are not the only royals doing the World Cup; Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe, and Princess Letizia at today’s World Cup match between Spain and Switzerland.

Julie Jacobson/AP

The outcome was an upset, Spain (reigning European champions) did not win the match.

Our final tidbit in what has become “Your Royal Update from the Princess,” a reminder about this Saturday’s big event, the wedding between Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria and former fitness instructor Daniel Westling.

Jonas Ekstromer/Scanpix/Reuters

On the left, the Princess at a function last December, and on the right, leaving the Cathedral where the ceremony will be held.

We look forward to seeing the wedding gown the Princess will wear.

Until next time, may your afternoon be sunny and bright!

Major Papers Talk Preppy Style

Hello-Hello and happy day to everyone!

We’ll jump right in today with a few things we never seem to fit in our daily posts, despite the fact we start out planning to include them every. single. day.  We are so slow in sharing them many readers are likely to have already seen them, yikes! Here they are in completely random order:

1) The Times had an outstanding story from David Colman a few weeks back in their Dress Codes series, “The All-American Back from Japan,” examining contemporary preppy style.  A sample from the article:

“There is madras everything, button-downs everywhere. Nantucket reds — washed-out pink pants — are the new khakis; Sperry Top-Siders are more common on roof decks than top decks; and the Polo pony and the Lacoste crocodile are now but two of the critters in a zoo of polo shirt insignia.”

The story is accompanied by a companion slide show, “Dress Codes: The Preppy Look” with excellent photos from Dean Isidro. Below, the gentleman wears Benjamin Bixby, Lacoste, Trovata, Brooks Brothers Black Fleece, Marc by Marc Jacobs.

PHOTO: Dean Isidro/NY Times

PHOTO: Dean Isidro/NY Times

The article looks at the history of ‘preppy fashion’ in the US (or more appropriately, that particular moniker for the style) as well as what Mr. Colman refers to as “…the Japanese penchant for Americana…”.

Some of the brands cited in the story and slide show are definitely not “your Father’s preppy style,” although again, TP’s family never referred to it this way. If asked and forced to describe the look TQM probably would have merely said it was conservative or classic, perhaps being so bold as to inquire  “why do you ask?” as it wasn’t something one consciously thought of or needed to discuss. The only possible exception might be if one the children dared desire something out-of-the-norm, in the “no, no, that’s not something we wear” category. How did your family refer to their clothing style? Or did they?

We highly recommend the story and slide show, they are great fun and offer a slew of new brands, some of which you have seen showcased in this space, such as Band of Outsiders, and others we probably won’t be sporting.

2) Also on the radar for quite some time, this story from the Times of London’s online site:

Preppy power

From twinsets and pearls to cashmere hoodies — new fashion tribes are taking their lead from the Sloanes

The story is another fun read, offering a slightly different perspective as it originates from the far side of the pond.

Yet rapidly growing numbers of people are embracing the preppy look — whether it’s stripy boat-neck T-shirts, argyle sweaters, brogues or cotton pea coats. Look closely and you’ll see preppy is having a makeover right under our noses.”

The story breaks the preppy looks into five different styles, including Euro Preppy, Fashion Preppy and Power Preppy.  Prince Harry’s former flame, Chelsea Davy, is pictured as an example of Public School Preppy:

PHOTO: Antony Jones/UK Press/PA Photos

PHOTO: Antony Jones/UK Press/PA Photos

A reminder that in the UK ‘public schools’ are actually what we call private schools here in the States, for example, Miss Porter’s or Choate would be called ‘public schools’ in England.

The article also has scads more details with the writer’s ideas on what brands specific prep types would wear, their ‘best looks’ as well as “A Look Too Far,” our favorite sub-category.  Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton is classified as a Euro Preppy, although the story notes:

“To be fair, Kate is more neo-Sloane ranger, but, for obvious reasons, the Euro preppy holds her in high esteem.”

As to the paper’s suggestions of a Power Preppy, they include First Lady Michelle Obama in this group. Rather than bore you with more recitation of the article’s content we suggest one toddle on over and personally read the story, we highly recommend it. A visit to the fabulous Europa Fox is also likely to provide far better insight than anything we offer.

True Chanel addicts with pin money (okay, investment quality pins) to spare will be pleased to learn of the 1980’s and early 90’s Chanel jewelry and accessories now being offered at high-end vintage retailer Resurrection.  Some pieces serve to remind us that the development of LogoPhobia is not merely in reaction to recent creations:

TP is ever-so-excited to learn one of our favorite spots for retail therapy is undergoing a bit of a lift, so to speak.  Fashion Island in Newport Beach (CA) is going to have some work done, adding wonderful stores like Nordstrom to the roster of existing shops, including Neiman’s, Saks, and Bloomies.  Below, an artist’s sketch of the ‘new and improved’ Fashion Island.

French Open Blues, Longchamp is Pretty in Pink & Rafa Nadal…Preppy?

Hello-Hello, and happy first week of June! Yippee!

Has everyone been watching the goings-on at Roland Garros? Some amazing things, we must say, and not all of them involving the actual play, although we were stunned to see the early ouster of Rafael Nadal. No, we’re talking once again about the fashions at this year’s French Open, and feeling like we didn’t get the blue memo.

Above left, Roger Federer and on the right, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic. Below, we see Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka (R) and Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic.

Also in blue tones with teal and turquoise, Maria Sharapova.

Is it just us, or does this style almost make Ms. Sharapova look matronly? A difficult thing to achieve given the tennis star’s natural beauty.  Below, Roumania’s Sorana Cirstea sports similar colors.

Two more in blue, Juan Martin del Porto of Argentina (L) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, France.

If blue isn’t your hue, then there is always our favorite color: pink! Below, superstar Rafa Nadal.

The Nike Bold Open tennis polo Mr. Nadal is wearing is available online.

The Spanish heartthrob was also in pink for the news conference following his loss to Sweden’s Robin Soderling. In fact, we’ll just declare that both of the pink tops qualify as today’s Pretty in Pink.

Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova was in the pink as well, paired with black.

Next, China’s Na Li in what is rapidly becoming a popular combination, hot pink and orange (or a peachy salmon/coral).

Serena Williams donned a similar orange offset by dark gray.

In the photo directly above Mr. Nadal is in a Nike shirt and Tommy Hilfiger khakis, the white linen suit in the first image is Ralph Lauren Purple Label.
