Hunter Isn’t Just Boots Anymore & Preppy Perceptions Abound

Hello-Hello! Once again business pressures mandate brevity, so we will get going right away previewing a new collection from a brand many readers like, Hunter. The company is about to launch its first outerwear collection.

This is Hunter’s first foray into this category, more from a story in Fashionista:

The coats are classic, well-made and functional–exactly what we’d hoped for when we found out Hunter was planning to launch outerwear

There are traditional trench coats, pea jackets and quilted pieces as well.

There is also outerwear for your MOTH (Man of the House), similarly styled.

Everything in the group exudes a classic, timeless look, perfectly in sync with the company’s existing brand image.

The collection launches in September on the Hunter website, along with all of the usual suspects, Saks and Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman. To see the entire collection, click here.

Next, it’s that time of year, back to school fashion always boosts the number of stories and blog posts about ‘preppy style’.  From the Toronto Star:

The preppy revival continues to grow, and collegiate looks are one of the big trends, emerging in varsity jackets and preppy plaids.

Keith Beaty/The Toronto Star

The story focuses on footwear, as seen in the photo above.

The prepster look also hits the ground as footwear takes its cues from the campus crowd with such classics as penny loafers, brogues and tasselled shoes. However, these classic men’s-style shoes are getting a feminine make-over with high heels, sleek patent leather and suede fringed tassels.laofers

More preppy perceptions come via a Chictopia blog:

The look that used to be exclusively for your east coast ivy bound types has turned into a fashion phenomenon. Now anyone can channel this clean cut preppy style with a couple of pieces, read on to find out how.

Facconable Via Sheiktopia

The piece goes on to explain that the look “isn’t hard to achieve,” listing wardrobe items the author considers “musts” and shares several prep-inspired ensembles, including “Ivy Bound“. To see the other styles, click here.

Finally today, an update to our post on the furor in Canada over J. Crew’s higher prices for its new Canadian store.

Via Moneyville

From the Moneyville story shown above:

In response to customers’ complaints, popular U.S. retailer J. Crew says it will drop the duty from items purchased on its new Canadian website.

The preppy fashion retailer will continue to charge higher prices for goods sold in Canada than its does in the U.S.

The story says J. Crew is sending a letter to customers today:

“When we opened our first Canadian store in Toronto last week, we aligned our store, online and catalogue prices to be consistent. In the days following the launch of our updated website, we quickly realized that we could have done things better for our online shoppers. And now we are making it right.

“Starting today, the J. Crew shopping experience will be duty free. “

Talk about rapid responsive, that was very speedy on J. Crew’s part.

For some inexplicable reason your trusty correspondent is sadly fascinated rather fond of Hello Kitty.  Many readers are painfully aware of this, having been subjected to numerous posts over the years with the errant reference to said Kitty. We continue sharing our tragic obsession mild interest in the Kitty, leaving you with a few images from yet another design collaboration, Hello Kitty and Liberty of London.

Via High Snobette

The little creature has been incorporated into some of Liberty’s iconic prints, a makeup collection showcases the partnership.

The collection will be available at Liberty beginning September 26.

Until next time, may your powder puff always land right side up.

A German Take on Ivy Style, “The Prepicenter” & When Preppy Weds Hippie

Hello-Hello, and welcome to a Thursday here at The Prepatorium, where spring has been evicted by winter’s return. (Insert royal whineathon here.) Are you also experiencing the nasty weather in your corner of the globe?

We have quite a few tidbits to share today and jump right in with a topic that is somewhat disconcerting, the April issue of Vogue Enfants.

Vogue.fr via Fashionista

Two different fashion sites have interesting perspectives on the magazine, published by Vogue France. The always-on-top-of-things-Fashionista has a column headlined “Things that Creep Us Out from the New Issue of Vogue Enfants“.

“On the whole, French Vogue supplement Vogue Enfants is a gem for parents and children alike.”

“But after reviewing the issue, Lauren, Leah and I all felt a little uncomfortable after looking at some of the images, both ads and editorials.”

Below, two pages from the magazine.

Styleite also writes about this month’s issue:

“We know this is Vogue — and a supplement of Vogue Paris at that — but when we think of our childhood we think of smiling faces and candy and finding ways not to eat cauliflower, not giving a photographer the perfect pouty stink eye or looking malcontented.”

“They just look angry. And they shouldn’t. Because they’re six. If fashion magazines can do stuff like this to kids, it’s no wonder they can’t get it right when it comes to grown women.”

Two more images.

Back to the Fashionista story by Steff Yotka:

“Maybe we don’t get it because of our Puritan mentality (Vogue Enfants is French after all but then again TLC puts out a popular show called Toddlers and Tiaras), or maybe it’s that seeing children modeling like they’re adults–adults who are supposed to be sexy–is just plain unsettling.”

Well then, mark us down as puritanical as well, we agree with the concerns articulated by both stories, particularly when looking at the makeup on that beautiful girl in the cover shot.  But we should also point out that while Vogue France doesn’t need us to defend it (there’s a concept), we must acknowledge seeing many other publications showcasing little girls with inappropriate clothing and makeup, this is not the first time a glossy fashion publication has prompted us to express a fervent wish that little girls be allowed to be little.

Next, another look at prep style, this time from Germany.

Via Ivy Style

Our friend Christian over at Ivy Style posted about this earlier in the week; we thought readers might enjoy a glance at some of the images.

Via Ivy Style

The feature is from a magazine published by German retailer Breuninger. More images are also available at Fashionisto, we leave you with these two shots.

Via Fashionisto

We have one more editorial spread to share with you, this one from Virginia Living. We are fortunate to have spotted a post on this at The Classic Preppy.

Cade Martin/Virginia Living

The photos by Cade Martin are beautiful, lush and rich. The majority of the piece was shot at a place close to the hearts of many friends, Sweet Briar (where yours truly almost went, in part because the school colors are pink & green).  From the feature:

“We had fun shooting this story at Sweet Briar College with students and faculty, and some friends from nearby Hampden-Sydney College—Virginia’s “Prepicenter.”

Another stunning photo from the story.

Cade Martin/Virginia Living

The talented Whit at Worthy Style also has a look at the story, or click here to visit Virgina Living.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The upcoming marriage of Lauren Bush and David Lauren receives an interesting treatment in The Post, the paper’s Page Six magazine “When Preppy Weds Hippie“.

New York Post

The piece attempts humor at the blending of cultures and backgrounds, although when reading it a third and fourth time in an effort to write about it for you, it just felt flat. More forced than funny, as if an editor said “We *are* running this, you *will* finish it, and it *will* be funny.” (Having been on both ends of that kind of conversation, we can only confirm that it happens. More often than we care to remember.)  At any rate, if you pop over to look at the illustrations, do let us know your thoughts, our expiring little mind is dying to know if you found it humorous or humorless. (And while you are there you may enjoy a gossipy little story “Leader of the Snob Mob” about the Native Society, certainly not a new topic, it has been covered extensively by other media, but still a fun read.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In today’s not-so-delightful news, it looks like those of us obsessed with fond of Mad Men may be waiting a little longer to see our favorite ad agency back on the air; more from this story in the Times:

“Fans accustomed to spending their summer Sundays with Don Draper may have to wait a while longer. It looks increasingly likely that the fifth season of “Mad Men,” the three-time Emmy Award-winning AMC series, will not have its debut until late 2011 or early 2012.”

AMC-TV

Brian Stelter’s story also points out:

“Money often causes strife between program creators and distributors, but rarely do the negotiations drag out this long.”

Harrumph.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with something much cheerier, today’s Pretty in Pink.

Lilly Pulitzer Picture perfect Espadrille

That is the Picture Perfect Espadrille at Lilly Pulitzer, it shrieks spring, and we need a touch of that today.

Until next time, may the sun be shining for you and yours.

Target’s Next Designer, Party Pix & “Preppy Meets Parisian”

Hello-Hello!

THIS JUST IN: The next designer collaboration for Le Boutique Targét will be with British bag maker Mulberry, a Princess favorite. Below we show several bags from this season’s Mulberry lookbook.

Courtesy Mulberry

Women’s Wear Daily reports the collection will launch October 10. Most recently Mulberry has partnered with Apple on a collection of accessories; below, the Daria Mini Messenger for iPhone, one of today’s Pretty in Pink items.

Mulberry

This particular partnership probably has us more excited than any preceding today’s news, it shall be fun to see how the line looks come this fall. If interested in learning more about Mulberry, the Daily Mail ran a good backgrounder over the weekend.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have scads of party pictures to share (among other things) from last night’s big do, the CFDA Awards. For those in the business, this is one of the première functions on one’s social calendar. Below we see designer Tory Burch and Polo Ralph Lauren’s David Lauren in photos from Steve Eichner at WWD.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America awards honor a variety of disciplines; below we see Caroline Kennedy presented an award to Vogue fashion director Tonne Goodman. Diane von Furstenburg and Carolina Herrera looked elegant, as always.

Also on hand, Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick and Alexa Chung. Do you think Mr. Westwick is trying to look fierce in the second image?

Another Gossip Girl talent attended Brook Shields appears to like Paper magazine’s Kim Hastreiter’s OMG necklace. (We do adore this publication, online and off.) Another Gossip Girl talent was in attendance, Michelle Trachtenberg.

We loved the Rachel Roy styles seen on both the designer herself (L), and model Hilary Rhoda.

Deidre Schoo for the NY TImes

We know some readers are fond of reality star Whitney Port; she was wearing David Meister.

Deidre Schoo for the NY Times

As is often the case, Thom Browne (of Brooks Brothers’ Black Fleece fame) dressed to impress.

Steve Eichner/WWD

The winner of this most popular designer was once again Ralph Lauren.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In other party news, Brooks Brothers has been hosting fêtes in select stores as part of its launch for the Social Primer Bow Tie collection we previously chatted about here. Imagine our delight at seeing that two of our Mad Men faves were at last week’s party in Beverly Hills!

via Huffington Post

Harry and Joan Rich Sommer and Christina Hendricks were at the celebration, Mr. Sommer looking dapper in a bow tie. We can hardly wait for the show’s return this summer. July 25 to be precise. Not that we’re counting down the days to Season 4, nay-nay, not us. (Heh-heh-heh.)

Another Mad Men actress is busy, January Jones is the spokesperson for advocacy group Oceana’s work on saving sharks, and today is World Oceans Day.

Oceana

A timely issue, to be sure.

Finally in our little off-screen wrap-up for the M2 cast, Don Draper co-star Jon Hamm has also been busy away from the Mad Men, below he is seen at Saturday’s taping of the “Guys Choice Awards” with Bradley Cooper.

Christopher Polk/Getty

Samuel L. Jackson and Duane Johnson (who? never mind, The Consort advises us Mr. Johnson is a former professional wrestler) took part in the Awards, presented by Spike TV.

Kevin Winter/Getty

Leonard DiCaprio and Ben Affleck were also on stage.

From what we can glean in these photos, the actual award is rather distinctive.

It appears to be a set of antlers.

Kevin Winter/Getty

On behalf of Preppy 101 we want to share another shot of Mr. Hamm, this one with his antlers.

Chris Pizzello/AP

(Pssst, not that an elegant and refined southern lady like Preppy 101 would ever watch anything containing moments of crass commercialism and vulgar ostentation, but just in case you know of  someone who might be interested in such a display, the awards start at 10pm June 20th, on Spike.  Just in case.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In an effort to offer our cherished readers coverage carrying some shred or thread of a connection to things with a preppy theme, we offer the following from Front Row View’s coverage of Jason Wu’s 2011 Resort Collection.

via Front Row Fashion

The story is titled Preppy Meets Parisian,” here is some of Pamela Kingston’s story:

“…resort collection, shown at the St. Regis hotel, New York managed to perfectly fuse contemporary preppy garments with romantic Parisian glamour. Straw hats and strong tailoring added the preppy edge to floaty, shift dresses with dark feathered abstract print featuring all over.”

Today next Pretty in Pink item is from the art world, a sculpture by artist Aaron Curry.

Kellie Honeycutt/Courtesy of the artist & Public Art Fund via T Magazine

Mr. Curry’s creations are part of an outdoor series of installations put on by the Public Art Fund. The original tip on this came via one of the T Magazine blogs, we extend our thanks to them.

Today’s final Pretty in Pink… and Green comes via Mulberry, the company’s Charm Ballerina shoes.

On that fun image we say g’bye until next time!

Sperry’s 75th Anniversary Collection at J. Crew, Busy Gossip Girls

Hello-Hello and Happy New Year!

Wow – is it possible the holidays are all behind us? Hanukkah… Christmas… New Year’s?  Yikes, some of it flew by in such a blur we scarcely remember the goings-on. On other points we resort to using the selective recall technique, it helps us overcome the trauma of some episodes, like the great Cheesecake Tragedy.

However, we are back at it, and we begin with what must have been quite the coup for Brooks Brothers:

People.com

It seems that Kevin Jonas wore a Brooks custom tuxedo for his recent wedding to Danielle Deleasa. (We realize that the dinner jacket is nigh impossible to spot on the one and only photo we have seen of Mr. Jonas, and offer our apologies.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next on today’s hit parade, a look at pieces in the 75th Anniversary collection from Sperry Top-Sider®.

Courtesy Photo

In honor of the big birthday the company will offer a number of limited edition releases, like the Men’s Seamate shown above.  Some are available at the Sperry site and others only at J. Crew.  The women’s Original 2-Eye metallic boat shoe seen below is at Crew, offered in platinum.

Sperry at J. Crew

(TP has stepped away for the moment, she is struggling with the word ‘metallic’ adjacent to the words ‘boat shoe’.)

The Crew site also offers this Original Authentic 2-eyeBoat Shoe (L) at $98 “featuring exclusive details you won’t find anywhere else (like grosgrain ribbon at the heel and a just-for-us color: soft sandalwood…”.  Or one can opt for the Original Authentic directly from Sperry at $75, sans the ribbon and special color. As always, we post, you ponder.

The Women’s Sperry at Crew can be found here; be advised there are only two styles available. The Men’s Sperry at J. Crew can be found here.

The Orlando Sentinel also had photos of upcoming pieces in the collection. On the left the Women’s 75th anniversary CVO, and on the right, the Men’s 75th anniversary CVO.

Of course, while perusing items at Sperry we located goodies we would love to acquire now, no need to wait for the fancy-schmancy anniversary hoo-hah. We were really taken by the Women’s Pelican Tall Boot in the new Sailboat print.

The Surf Blue Anchors Bahama remains a favorite as well.  Sigh.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

All the Sperry put us in a nautical mood and reminded us about the Sailor Glass Set at Fishs Eddy.

TQM purchased a set of the fab Cynthia Rowley dishes at Fishs Eddy several years back and we just adore them.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with a few Gossip Girl tidbits, the first snippets from a lengthy interview with Chace Crawford that WWD did before the holidays. (Most readers know Mr. Crawford as one of the stars of the faux prep school drama.)

PHOTO: Tony Duran/WWD.com

Author Nick Axelrod’s opening paragraph is witty:

“Like the Pussycat Dolls or Brad Pitt, Chace Crawford is the kind of perfect human specimen that should be freeze-dried and put in a time capsule so that, in several thousand years, whatever manlike species can get a sense of just how good we looked.”

The story speaks about Mr. Crawford’s character in the show, Nate.

““I’m not ignorant to the fact that part of the reason why the show’s popular and part of the reason [why] people want to see it is to be like, ‘Oh, novelty boy! Hot boy! Pretty boy!’” Crawford says. “And that’s all fine and good. It is what it is.”

PHOTO: Tony Duran/WWD.com

The G2 crew is splashed on multiple magazine covers right now, far too many to justify a complete list, but here are three: Leighton Meester on Australia’s January Cleo cover, Jessica Szohr on Teen Vogue’s February cover and Taylor Momsen on the February Seventeen cover.

A busy group of young ladies.

With that we are off until next time!
