Hello-Hello, happy middle of the week.

It’s the time of year where one holds fast to the knowledge that even if we see more snow, spring isn’t *that* far away. Naturally yours truly begins to think about spring fashions at this point,we thought it would be fun to take a peek at some of the offerings this season.

Brooks Brothers continues to offer its updated take on classic pieces.

A number of styles were very attractive.

The offerings in the Boy’s department look solid.

When Duct Tape is Preppy

Hello-Hello, and Happy New Year!

Today we look at something that is more mainstream than I thought, duct tape. Yes, duct tape. Your faithful scribe knew it was kind of cool, for lack of a better term, but didn’t fully realize the scope of its popularity until reading this story in the Times:

Indeed, duct tape fashion skews toward a younger demographic….customers in the duct tape “fashion market” (as opposed to the “repair market”) are predominantly teenage girls — including Teresa Scanlan, 18, the reigning Miss America, who lists making things out of duct tape as one of her interests. “I’ve made a duct tape skirt, shorts, a couple shirts and a dress is my next project,” Ms. Scanlan said. “You know how they ask you what three things you’d want on a desert island? I’d only want one thing: duct tape. It’s all you need.”

Hmmm, under these terms the Prepatorium would be be a house divided, we’re definitely the ‘fashion market’ while The Consort would be the ‘repair market’.  Today’s Pretty in Pink has to be the boots, however uncomfortable they may be.

NY Times

While wasting time researching the post we discovered all manner of duct tape.

Tape Brothers

We even discovered tote bags made of the stuff, including pink and green, as well as a monogrammed bag.

CraftsbyBev on etsy

Kate Murphy’s story also references those duct tape proms you may have heard about:

Lindsay Ashby, 19, a University of Louisville freshman, won last year’s Stuck at Prom contest by using 57 rolls of duct tape to completely cover and embellish a dress she bought at Goodwill.

Yes, there are pink and green duct tape prom dresses.

Via OddityCentral.com

There’s no shortage of options in pink, including argyle and paisley.

Via TapeBrothers.com

But it’s not all about the pink and green, a quick tour of etsy reveals just how broad the appeal is; take a look at this Tory Burch inspired handbag.

ElevenPeacocks on etsy

There are damask-like offerings, including a wallet from Junior Duck.

JuniorDuck on etsy

You can also buy officially licensed tape in your college colors. I’m sure the reason I couldn’t find any tape for Big Ten schools is because of a glitch or oversight on my part. Here is a sampling of what’s available.

DuctTapeFashion.com

Fortunately the folks at Tape Brothers stock a broad selection of schools. (Translation: TQM’s alma mater, along with ancestral outposts.)

One can even find duct tape jewelry on etsy.

The ring shown above allows us to segue right into another jewelry topic, we want to publicly congratulate Wendy Brandes, a friend and amazing jewelry designer/creator.  Wendy has been named as a finalist for the FGI Rising Star awards, a *very* big deal. She is gifted at both design and execution, here are a few of Wendy’s pieces.

Lady Diana’s Dre$$ & Gucci Goes Young

Hello-Hello!

We begin with a quick follow-up to our previous post about this famous black party frock:

Princess Diana’s gown was auctioned yesterday for a price far exceeding the estimate of £30,000 – £50,000, ultimately selling for £192,000, approximately $276,000.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Just a heads-up from the corner condo here at the Prepatorium:

snarky

Pronunciation: \ˈsnär-kē\
Function: adjective
Etymology: dialect snark to annoy, perhaps alteration of snark to irritate
1 : crotchety, snappish
2 : sarcastic, impertinent, or irreverent in tone or manner <snarky lyrics>
snark·i·ly \-kə-lē\ adverb

Fair warning.

Having issued the advisory above, we move on, with news of several new lines launching in the not-so-distant future:

Courtesy Image via StyleList.com

  • Gucci’s new Childrens line debuts June 24; it will include apparel, accessories, shoes and sunglasses. (Because there aren’t enough logoed sunglasses available for the Young Miss and Master at your Palace.) We cannot resist part of StyleList’s take on the upcoming collection.

“… since most of its target audience can’t read, the designs…  will be marked with a gold teddy bear logo (how very Kanye!) so that little Susie’s playmates will know when to seethe with jealousy.”

The Consort also offered his insight: “Why don’t they do dogs, then we could have Gucci Poochie.”

Indeed.

  • We have a backup plan for you just in case the Gucci childrenswear doesn’t pan out: the new Little Miss America collection.

    Courtesy Image via WWD

    Sized for both babies/toddlers and tweens/teens, all of the items will be priced at $25 or less. Again, we turn to StyleList’s report:

“So what does a mini Miss America dress like? There’s not as many sequins and flesh-toned pantyhose as you might expect — although it is very girlie. Initial sketches show ruffled tuxedo-style tops, bow-detailed skirts, lots of pink, and a onesie with an imitation pageant sash emblazoned across the front.

Hey, just because you’re still in diapers doesn’t mean you can’t get a head start on baton twirling or prepping those responses on world peace, kids.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is the time of year when designers show their Cruise/Resort collections, and there have been some stunning pieces, beginning with Oscar de la Renta.  As seen in the following images, there is a nautical influence evident in some pieces from this collection.

The vibrant colors and elegant lines are delightful.

Natch, we are gaga for several of the party frocks.

In any length.

Perhaps our favorite:

George Chinsee/WWD

One quick advisory, the OdlR spring collection is currently on sale.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The other resort collection we are sharing today is from Marc Jacobs.

The two styles shown above almost qualify as a Pretty in Pink… and Green, but it is a tad challenging to see the colors with images this size.

The WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) review described some of the looks as “…playful preppy.” We particularly like the dress on the left.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next on today’s hit parade, a few product updates, beginning with a fast glance at some of the springtime treasures recently added to the fab merchandise mix at Just Madras. The Girls dresses look darling…

As do the bow ties for your MOTH (Man of the House), or the always-popular Madras Skirts.

We do love the ladies at Just Madras, and too many of their goodies!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We are tickled to share additions to our Preppy Ladybug line here at The Princess, here are more delightful designs by Shannon.

We have added patterns to our Flat Card selection ($15 for a set of 12), like the navy/red/lobster motif, as well as a new pink & green gator.

There are new designs ideal for the younger set. (It’s never to early to start them on the handwritten note concept, IOHO.)

There are also additions to the Ladybug’s Stickers and Labels line ( $4.50), including blue and pink perfect for announcing blessed arrivals, as well as that wonderful lobster.

One can even do a coordinated set for their little princess.

We adore the Ladybug and her fabulous eye.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with an image that we understand has provoked some chatter about the watercooler, so to speak.

Getty Images via TMZ.com

When initially seeing this photo we knew two of the individuals pictured above. After all, they carry the distinction of being charter members in the Original AntiPrep Class of 2008. (Paris and Nicky Hilton.) It has been explained to us by TSU (The Spousal Unit, aka The Consort) that the other two creatures are named Snooki (sp?) and Jwoww(sp?). Our question to those in the know: are the latter two individuals solid candidates for the APHOS? (Anti Prep Hall of Shame.)

Do tell. We have an expiring mind dying to know.

Until next time, may your afternoon be filled with smiles!

“Wannabe preppy” & “Dressy-preppy-heritage”, to name a few

Hello cherished friends, and welcome to another gorgeous springtime week in The Great Midwest.

We begin with a few more looks at the preppish aesthetic from the far side of the pond, beginning with an in-depth piece on Tory Burch in the Telegraph.  Friday’s “Tory Burch interview: America’s new fashion sweetheart” asks: “… will her wasp style win over the British?”

Tina Tyrell/The Guardian

The story continues:

Tory Burch is an embodiment of her brand. It’s not just the physical attributes – though her very petite, very blonde, very pretty looks are certainly not a hindrance – it’s everything from her privileged background to her impeccable Upper East Side lifestyle, her ubiquity on the New York party circuit to her complicated private life, her Hamptons mansion to her much-photographed personal style.”

The article takes a solid look at the company and its success, a worthy read on a brand and designer we are fond of here at the Prepatorium.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Another prep-style brand was also profiled this weekend; The Guardian has a stellar story in “Jack Wills: the Sloane Ranger Rides Again“.  Here is the subhead:

“Clothing brand Jack Wills is a raging success. It doubled its profits to £42m last year and turned British teenagers on to the allure of preppy dressing. But where did it come from, what does it want, and why is it so mysterious?

Many readers know that most consider Sloane Rangers to be England’s equivalent to our preps.  Yesterday’s Guardian story begins this way:

“You know what’s everywhere? Jack Wills clothing. Like Starbucks and Glee!, Jack Wills snuck up on us from behind and overwhelmed us without us really noticing.”

“Five minutes ago, our impressionable youth was a varied bunch. They were dark, distressed and emo, or a bit too tarty for their age…. Now they’re a sea of wannabe preppy – of branded jersey, stripy scarves and rugby-referencing detailing.”

Clearly this references the brand’s popularity in Britain,, not stateside.  But as discussed in our recent post, “A British Invasion Hits the Vineyard,” the company’s first US store has opened on the Vineyard, with more coming to preppish locales like Nantucket, Boston, part of the broader Wills expansion plan for growth on this side of the pond.

We liked the writer’s test of the brand; Polly Jordan actually tried on many of the styles.

Karen Robinson/The Guardian

And Ms. Jordan’s reaction to the styles?

“… how transforming. I do not look like me. Not at all….  I imagine myself inhabiting the bouncy, youthful world in which these clothes belong. A world free of the tyranny of high heels, middle age, underwire bras, hang- overs, tube commutes and the nine-to-five slog. I want in! And then… I take the clothes off. I am 38 years old and entirely subject to the tyranny of high heels, underwire bras and so on. I make my escape from the store.

We thought most everything looked splendid on Ms. Jordan.  There’s no denying that Wills offers some cute, enticing pieces:

As an expert interviewed for the story puts it:

“The collection is actually very relevant this season. The Jack Wills staples – the varsity jackets, the flippy skirts – it’s on the money for the sporty/ preppy trend.”

Toddle on over and read the article if so inclined, it is fun for anyone, but of special interest for students of marketing and public relations.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have one more lengthy newspaper story to share, there is also a recent article looking at a brand now openly committed to distancing itself from the ‘preppy’ moniker, J. Crew.  The San Francisco Chronicle story probes how J. Crew fits in with other mass-marketed menswear brands, ultimately deeming it the best of that genre.

I was in … for an informal tour of mass-market menswear. I skipped the department stores (apologies to Tommy, Calvin and Ralph), in favor of a spin through the stand-alone shops, the majority of which conformed to type almost perfectly.

I finished my tour with what is increasingly the best bet for fashion-conscious American men (and those who aim to dress as if they don’t eat in a dining hall), when it comes to mass-market, midpriced mall fare: J. Crew.”

Below we share  a look from J. Crew’s fall Men’s collection.

Courtesy Image via SF Chronicle

Kudos to Crew for the plaudits.

Additionally the story offers a brief overview of the just-launched LL Bean Signature and Lands’ End Canvas lines.

“Two other venerable catalog companies have recently introduced lines aiming for a bit of the dressy-preppy-heritage market. Could their success bring a fleet of brick-and-mortar stores, too?”

Below, two looks from the Signature women’s collection.

From Mr. Britt’s story:

“Twill blazers rub elbows with gingham shirts; canvas pants in colors that won’t scare the locals and shawl-neck cardigans lend a breezy August-in-Kennebunkport vibe…. “

More from the story:

“Lands’ End’s Canvas line comes in a tick less pricey than Bean, but offers a similar look. Windblown American sportswear with a decidedly midcentury turn is the game here…”

Below, a Lands’ End Canvas style:

Lands' End Canvas

For the entire story, pop over here.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with a very special Pretty in Pink.

Is this not the cutest gift bag ever? This pink and green faux Bermuda Bag arrived here at the Prepatorium filled with all sorts of long-distance love. And as much as we adore our goodies, we also went gaga over the bag, wishing we had a gazillion or so, we would definitely offer them to our Princess clientele!

On that pretty image we say G’bye until next time!

It’s Charming, That Snuggie Suit, & Sally Draper’s Dress

Hello-Hello and Happy Thursday!

The crush of business forces us to post only briefly today (and not at all yesterday, eek), so we jump right in chatting about a brand we like, Links of London.  Our fondness for the company might seem a touch odd if one is taking the company’s name literally, we really only haul out our cufflinks 10-12 times a year. And when we do sport french cuffs we do vintage linkage, circa the 1930s through the 1970s.

But L2 does offer items other than what the name implies, including some darling charms.  We like the Scooter charm (now only $32 on sale!) and adore the little Welly boot ($48), both in sterling silver and both very nice bargains at those prices.

One of the smartest things the company does online? They offer a ‘create your own charm bracelet‘ application and we only have one word for it: addictive.  You can imagine how much we love the Hot Pink Heart charm, today’s Pretty in Pink.

Links of London

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many readers may already know this, but for those not yet aware, the M·A·C cosmetics collaboration with Lilly Pulitzer is now available in stores and online.

Courtesy MAC Cosmetics

As described on the MAC website:

“A collaboration that feels like the best tongue-in-chic resort retort delivers that joyously bright and refined Key West bloom: new floral patterned Pearlmatte Eye Shadow and Face Powder, plus all the retro-modern colour combinations that Lilly is famous for.”

Below we show the Lipgelées palette; from the left: Preppy, Lush & Bright, and Shift to Pink.

We did not show the Resort Life color in the swatches above, described as an “off-white with pink pearl,” but it is seen on the far left in the four-shot of the gelées:

MAC Cosmetics

These run $14, and like almost all items in the collection, they are limited editions. Neither the Pearlmatte Eyeshadow (L, $19.50) or Face Powder (R, $27) are for us, but they do look fun.

MAC Lilly Eye Shadow trio

There are loads of other goodies in the collection, be sure take a peek if only for the eye candy factor.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Because we are completely delusional like to stay on top of all things Snuggie, we bring you the latest:

Courtesy JC Penney via Racked

Yes, it is the Snuggie Suit brought to you by JC Penney. Oops! It is the Snuggle Suit with an ‘l’, not an ‘i’.  (We dare not risk the wrath of the Snuggie pooh-bahs.)  Old news for those who follow TP on Twitter, the suit is currently on sale for $24.99, this ah, this item is also available in red and an oh-so-chic black.  For more on the Snuggie phenomenon, including the Snuggie vs. Slanket controversey (gasp!) click here.

(How did this Snuggie ‘coverage’ start? What does it have to do with anything remotely related to the Preppy Planet? Has TP gone off her meds, or just off her rocker?)

For those intrigued by “Seen on TV” products, the Times has a great story today about the way Consumer Reports perceives such merchandise.

“Among products the article says are not worth buying are the Snuggie, ShamWow, Debbie Meyer Green Bags for food storage, and the Garry Ultra Light vacuum, which testers said fell short of advertised claims and, even when they had some good attributes, were overpriced.

The only item that passed muster: the PedEgg, a foot file that traps shavings in a compartment and costs about $10.”

There you have it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And finally, word about pint-sized red carpet fashions for a Mad Men star.

Courtesy AMC-TV

Kiernan Shipka plays Sally Draper in the show and it seems the Young Miss is in need of a party dress or two for upcoming award shows. Below we see Kiernan with her mother, Betty Draper costar January Jones on the red carpet last August.

Albert L. Ortega / PR Photos

One of our favorite bloggers, Robert Janjigian at the Palm Beach Daily Post, shared that Miss Shipka was recently seen shopping at Spring Flowers on Worth. Did the intrepid writer discover a dress choice?  He did.  Miss Shipka selected the Caroline by Fleurisse, in gunmetal gray as shown below.

Spring Flowers

The silk taffeta frock is available in a number of colors. Fleurisse is a private label from the owners of Spring Flowers, long an outstanding shopping spot for the little ones.

The snow is starting to fall here at the Prepatorium, so we leave you with a dose of bright and springy colors: our soon-to-be-available Lilly Pulitzer Luggage Tags.

A Gossip Girl on the Worst Dressed Lists, SATC 2, Pink & Green Whales You’ll Love

Hello-Hello, and welcome to a Thursday!

There is so much happening on the Preppy Planet, it is hard to know where to begin. We’ll start today with the tale of a star from faux-prep school show Gossip Girl being excoriated by many of the fashion press and bloggerati.

It seems Leighton Meester’s wardrobe selections this past year do not meet with their approval.

Photo: REX Features

Some readers may recognize this as the wretched outfit we shared in a November post, and to be fair, we were not complimentary about the style.  But now Miss Meester has been declared the Worst Dressed of 2009 by our friends across the pond at Marie Claire UK. From the magazine’s website:

“Now this makes us sad. One of our favourite girl crushes, Leighton Meester usually gets it so right in the style stakes, but so didn’t when she threw together this fashion car crash of an ensemble. In her efforts to launch a solo pop career, it looks as though the Gossip Girl decided a complete image overhaul was necessary – perhaps to distance herself from the preppy on-screen style of her GG alter-ego.”

Ouch.

Yesterday Fashionista posted “An Open Letter to Leighton Meester“:

“Dear Leighton,

So maybe we’re used to you oozing Upper East Side debutante in Blair’s Ralph Lauren pea coats and Nanette Lepore frocks, and we are open to change, but we’ve really started to worry about your recent choice of outfits.”

The letter was accompanied by this collage of offending outfits:

Courtesy Fashionista.com

In November the Fashion Police dedicated this post to their concerns over the young star’s sartorial selections.  And that was before this outfit from the KIIS-FM Jingle Ball in Los Angeles earlier this month.

Or this one from Saturday’s Z100 Jingle Ball in the city.

Photo Agency

Us magazine places Miss Meester second on their list of 2009’s Worst Dressed Stars.  The outfit they use to make their point is below, worn by the young actress and singer to the Met Costume Gala in May.

Photo: Getty Images

While we may not be fond (ahem) of Ms. Meester’s wardrobe choices, we do applaud the young lady’s spunky approach and her refusal to be chastened by fashion writers and critics.

Ms. Meester is not the only G2 star on the Us Magazine hit parade; Taylor Momsen is also included.

George Napolitano/Getty Images For Giuseppe Zanotti

Indeed.

Speaking of Gossip Girl, WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) reports that the next real-life fashionista appearing on the show is Teen Vogue editor Amy Astley. From WWD‘s story:

“…. spent Tuesday with Blake Lively and company on location at the IAC building filming a scene for the CW soap that is tentatively slated to air in March.”

Ms. Astley can be seen on the far right in the photo below, taken in September at the Clinique Fresh Faces Tour kickoff, a promotional event put together by Teen Vogue, and featuring Taylor Momsen.

Mark Von Holden/Getty Images

That concludes today’s Gossip Girl fashion-related report. (Heh-heh-heh.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also fashion-related, the Sex and the City 2 poster has been released, providing a peek into the design aesthetic for the upcoming movie.

SATC 2: Carrie On” is slated for release May 28, 2010.  Sarah Jessica Parker wears a dress from the spring 2010 Halston Heritage collection, Christian Louboutin Pigalle Gold Sequinned Pumps, and she carries a Chanel clutch.  Here is a closer look at the pumps with black sequins.

Also debuting next spring, Candace Bushnell’s The Carrie Diaries, introducing readers to Carrie in her teen years.

The book is scheduled for release April 27.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with our very favorite new item here at the Prepatorium, it just arrived Tuesday and we couldn’t wait to share!

PreppyPrincess.com

The Pink Whales Bag has a drawstring closure in bright pink, making it casual and easy to carry. It is very durable. and perfect for your little one to use as a laundry bag, to tote their toys or goodies to a sleepover, and more.

The closer look also shows the bag’s two other patterns, Pink Funkier Monkey and Blue Funkier Monkey.

With that cheery image we say g’bye until next time, may everyone enjoy a relatively calm Thursday!
