J. Crew Bridal Spring 2011, Preppy Pet Styles

Hello-hello, welcome to an almost weekend here at the Prepatorium.

We have all manner of goodies today, beginning with something we do love to look at, wedding gowns. At last month’s Bridal Market J. Crew revealed styles for next spring.

We love the clutch with its oversized bow, above left.

More styles.

If determined to go strapless and short, the short dress above left is pretty.

As did most of the full-length gowns.

Our thanks to AisleDash for the photos.

For those who do not receive the Lilly Pulitzer Holiday Gift Book, we also have a few shots to share from this year’s offerings.

Fab photographer Trevor Dixon has posted some of his stellar photos for the catalog on his blog; click here to see more.

Next, a topic that has captivated Times readers:

An essay asking “Why Can’t Middle-Aged Women Have Long Hair?” has generated hundreds (1256 as of today) of comments from readers.  Here is a bit of Dominique Browning’s original story:

“MY mother hates it. My sister worries about it. My agent thinks I’m hiding behind it. A concerned friend suggests that it undermines my professional credibility. But in the middle of my life, I’m happy with it. Which is saying a lot about anything happening to my 55-year-old body.”

The volume of comments was so high the paper devoted a special segment to the topic on its website; below, a sampling. From “Kate in London”:

“Mothers and hair, the eternal battle. After a great haircut in my 40s, what was my mother’s comment? “Darling, you look like a middle-age hippie.” Last summer, my sister, now in her 50s, was going out the door, and what were our mother’s parting words? “Brush that hair.” While we used to get upset about it, as middle-aged women, we’re just happy to have our mom around so she can tell us how bad our hair looks. Long may it last!”

But then “RBenstein” in New York wrote:

“Weeellll…. truth be told, I really don’t think long gray hair does anything for any woman of a ‘certain’ age. It’s like women (or men) who dress younger than they are … in the end, it only ages them.”

A professional in the industry, “Skip Gue, Miami” notes:

“This is great! As a hairdresser for over 25 yrs (and a man). I get this all the time about women cutting their locks at a certain age.I ask them why? who made this rule?”

We ask our treasured readers – what do  you think? Is longer gray hair acceptable? Or should it simply be kept short after a “certain age”?

Although not generally a fan of dressing one’s furry family members, we do want to share a few goofy images that we hope will put smiles on your faces heading into the weekend.  The first is what we’ll refer to as the preppy-styled cat:

United Bamboo via Racked

That is just one of the images in next year’s United Bamboo Cat Calendar, the 2011 calendar starts shipping Nov. 15.

The second shot showcases a rather stylish pooch in his shirt and madras tie.

Via Rover Dog

The snappy duds are from Rover Dog, a wonderful etsy shop featuring items in two of our favorite fabrics, seersucker and madras, among other styles.  We must admit to being tipped off to the shop by an image on Facebook or Twitter, but cannot remember who the eagle-eyed shopper was; if you know, do tell, so we might properly give credit to the appropriate party.

On that frivolous note, goodbye and happy weekend!

Pretty in Pink… and Green

Hello-Hello, and Happy Monday!

Does it seem like the weekend flew by ever-so-quickly, or is that simply a reflection of our addled brain? We hope everyone enjoyed family, fun, and perhaps even a little down time to reflect and regroup, we are in the middle of what can be a more-than-wacky time of year!

Today is mostly pix, not prose, as the insanity of orders piling in is consuming most of the day. Our focus today is on gifts with a pink and green theme; we start with a find from the Pink & Green Scene:

The Fleece Throw looks like it would rank very high on the Snuggleometer.

From the folks at Not Soap, Radio we show the I’m Really at the Country Club collection.

Not only does it look like a perfect color combination, it is also an Adventure in Argyle, albeit in an understated pattern.

For those seeking something with a musical influence, the Mini Pink Piano at Neiman Marcus is really very cute.

Also at Needless Markup this establishment, and also possessing a high cute factor, the Paw-Print Cuddles & Burpies.

In honor of Jen at When Pigs Fly, we share this beauty in papier-mâché:

We found the little porker at Middleburg, an etsy shop, just one of many treasures available there.  Also at etsy, the Pink & Green Vines sleep mask from SourdoughSF‘s store, perfect for helping to smooth over any holiday wrinkles.

If still looking for tree decor, our friends at Tar-szay offer the Skiing Hippo (L), and on the right, Kurt Adler’s pastel Pink & Green Heart.

.

Our fondness for the All Smiles ornament in pink will surprise no one,nor will our appreciation of the Pink 1959 Cadillac.

The Baby Girl’s Dress is sweet, and comes nicely packaged. On the right, the Painting Diva offers her handpainted pink and green ornaments in her etsy shop.

As one might expect, this year’s Lilly Pulitzer Glass ornaments are very popular; on the left we show Checking In, and on the right, Free Falling.

Both items shown above are at the Pink Pelican.  New this year are the Lilly Pulitzer Photo Ornaments, available at the Princess and many other retailers.

For something a little more upscale, Smythson never fails to offer outstanding choices. Their Small Jewelry Roll is perfection, and one can’t go too far astray with one of their Key Fobs.

Other leather goods in fun colors can be found at Baekgaard. The Slim Case is available in a number of colorways, and very attractive from a pocketbook perspective.

Saks has bright leather Passport Covers:

Keep your little one warm and toasty in this sweet Faux Fur Jacket. The Pink Rosette coat is done in fleece, equally cute, but not quite as heavy.

We leave you with a few ideas for the four-legged family members, beginning with the Fairisle Wool sweater, available at Pretentious Pooch.

And then this, the Bone on Board sweater at Paw Palace:

After this, what could we possibly add?  Nothing of value, other than a ‘thank you’ for popping in to visit, and we shall see you next time.

More Goodness at Goyard, Big Bucks for Bonobos

Hello-hello and a hearty harrumph.

Not at you of course, but rather, at Mother Nature, she of the unceasing rain and cloudy skies.  Another torrential downpour is really. not. needed.

But our conscience does remind us we would be pouting and whining endlessly somewhat miffed if this were a different form of precipitation falling from the sky (can you say snow?), so we’ll stop right here, and move along to a far more pleasant topic:

We are speaking of the new London store for one of TP’s favorites, Goyard.  All those with a love for the French leather-goods firm will be happy to know everything is still on track for a summer opening.

The new shop is near Grosvenor Square; our thanks to the kind and generous Joe of the 00o00 blog (“All the Inane and Unnecessary Wants in Life“) for sharing his fab photos of the soon-to-be-new-home for this classic design house.

The giant trunk replica in front of the construction site adds a touch of whimsy, showing again the company doesn’t take itself too seriously. But then, this is a firm with the wisdom to open a store carrying only their upscale pet products!

++++++++++++++++++++++++

We were also pleased to read that Bonobos has received a cash infusion allowing the online-only retailer to offer more products. Fans of their classic men’s pants (the Supersoaker is on the left, the Twill Khakis on the right) will be happy to see the product line expanding.

A story last week in WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) explained how the retailer wants to use the funding:

“…new categories such as shorts, knit shirts and swimwear, as well as bolster customer service and invest in its Web site…”

This is outstanding news for those of us who love the line’s attention to detail and outstanding customer service.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Is everyone familiar with the TDF tees from the stylish folks over at Ball and Buck? Their 100% Organic Pocket Tees are rapidly becoming de rigeur in many prep closets; we share a look below.

Becca and company are doing a nifty event tomorrow for a good cause:

For those anywhere near ONC (Our Nation’s Capital), Toast to Fashion starts at 6:30 pm Thursday (May 14) at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria.  The fundraiser promises to be a great time while also raising much-needed cash for The Campagna Center. What better way to treat yourself to one of these?

One more product update before we go..well, actually, it is multiple products for one designer, Philip Lim. The designer is entering three new product categories: swimwear…

As well as footwear…

And lingerie…

Three new areas to merchandise and market is a big step, but this designer has been extremely popular, bucking many of the recessionary trends hitting so many in the fashion industry. What do you think of the new creations?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with news that Linens ‘n Things has been resurrected, at least online. The home fashions retailer’s name has been purchased by investors and they now have a new website up and running. We found the

Linens & Things

The Little Skipper Bedding Collection has a nice nautical look, in bright and cheery colors.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The seagoing theme reminded us we forgot to mention that our cotton canvas Boat Totes are now arriving in more colors in the Large size:

PreppyPrincess.com

They feature heavy-duty cotton canvas with a zip top; at $20 they are an outstanding value. With that, we shall sail away until next time. (We do apologize for this, apparently the Princess took silly pills today.)

Or our Holiday Snowman placemats.  These are all reversible so you get the value of two looks for the price of one, they are Made in the USA of 100% cotton, and they go in the washing machine and dryer! (Many consider this to be the best attribute, no dry cleaning for these upscale linens!)

Rolling Snowman PreppyPrincess.com

Of course you want to have matching napkins, also reversible in 100% cotton, Made in the USA and washing machine friendly. The solid red and green is a tad more sedate, but our preference is the whimsical red/greenstripe with a solid red or green on the other side. (You get to choose the reverse side color.)

TPC (The Princess Consort) is giving us what is generally referred to as the “death stare” here at the Palace, so I’d best toddle on over to order fullfillment and get busy or he may take away my tiara! Oh No!
