Major Papers Talk Preppy Style

Hello-Hello and happy day to everyone!

We’ll jump right in today with a few things we never seem to fit in our daily posts, despite the fact we start out planning to include them every. single. day.  We are so slow in sharing them many readers are likely to have already seen them, yikes! Here they are in completely random order:

1) The Times had an outstanding story from David Colman a few weeks back in their Dress Codes series, “The All-American Back from Japan,” examining contemporary preppy style.  A sample from the article:

“There is madras everything, button-downs everywhere. Nantucket reds — washed-out pink pants — are the new khakis; Sperry Top-Siders are more common on roof decks than top decks; and the Polo pony and the Lacoste crocodile are now but two of the critters in a zoo of polo shirt insignia.”

The story is accompanied by a companion slide show, “Dress Codes: The Preppy Look” with excellent photos from Dean Isidro. Below, the gentleman wears Benjamin Bixby, Lacoste, Trovata, Brooks Brothers Black Fleece, Marc by Marc Jacobs.

PHOTO: Dean Isidro/NY Times

PHOTO: Dean Isidro/NY Times

The article looks at the history of ‘preppy fashion’ in the US (or more appropriately, that particular moniker for the style) as well as what Mr. Colman refers to as “…the Japanese penchant for Americana…”.

Some of the brands cited in the story and slide show are definitely not “your Father’s preppy style,” although again, TP’s family never referred to it this way. If asked and forced to describe the look TQM probably would have merely said it was conservative or classic, perhaps being so bold as to inquire  “why do you ask?” as it wasn’t something one consciously thought of or needed to discuss. The only possible exception might be if one the children dared desire something out-of-the-norm, in the “no, no, that’s not something we wear” category. How did your family refer to their clothing style? Or did they?

We highly recommend the story and slide show, they are great fun and offer a slew of new brands, some of which you have seen showcased in this space, such as Band of Outsiders, and others we probably won’t be sporting.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

2) Also on the radar for quite some time, this story from the Times of London’s online site:

Preppy power

From twinsets and pearls to cashmere hoodies — new fashion tribes are taking their lead from the Sloanes

The story is another fun read, offering a slightly different perspective as it originates from the far side of the pond.

Yet rapidly growing numbers of people are embracing the preppy look — whether it’s stripy boat-neck T-shirts, argyle sweaters, brogues or cotton pea coats. Look closely and you’ll see preppy is having a makeover right under our noses.”

The story breaks the preppy looks into five different styles, including Euro Preppy, Fashion Preppy and Power Preppy.  Prince Harry’s former flame, Chelsea Davy, is pictured as an example of Public School Preppy:

PHOTO: Antony Jones/UK Press/PA Photos

PHOTO: Antony Jones/UK Press/PA Photos

A reminder that in the UK ‘public schools’ are actually what we call private schools here in the States, for example, Miss Porter’s or Choate would be called ‘public schools’ in England.

The article also has scads more details with the writer’s ideas on what brands specific prep types would wear, their ‘best looks’ as well as “A Look Too Far,” our favorite sub-category.  Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton is classified as a Euro Preppy, although the story notes:

“To be fair, Kate is more neo-Sloane ranger, but, for obvious reasons, the Euro preppy holds her in high esteem.”

As to the paper’s suggestions of a Power Preppy, they include First Lady Michelle Obama in this group. Rather than bore you with more recitation of the article’s content we suggest one toddle on over and personally read the story, we highly recommend it. A visit to the fabulous Europa Fox is also likely to provide far better insight than anything we offer.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

True Chanel addicts with pin money (okay, investment quality pins) to spare will be pleased to learn of the 1980’s and early 90’s Chanel jewelry and accessories now being offered at high-end vintage retailer Resurrection.  Some pieces serve to remind us that the development of LogoPhobia is not merely in reaction to recent creations:

TP is ever-so-excited to learn one of our favorite spots for retail therapy is undergoing a bit of a lift, so to speak.  Fashion Island in Newport Beach (CA) is going to have some work done, adding wonderful stores like Nordstrom to the roster of existing shops, including Neiman’s, Saks, and Bloomies.  Below, an artist’s sketch of the ‘new and improved’ Fashion Island.

A New Tiffany Collection, Preppy Chic, New Fred Perry

Happy sunshiny day everyone!

Remember when we asked everyone for their help with a bride-to-be’s pending fashion calamity? (You can read the origins of today’s update right here, or pop over to visit the delightful Miss Daisy at her Legally Blonde Ambition blog.) Below, a refresher on her gown, a silk taffeta confection by Anne Barge:

We can share good news: crisis averted, fashionable footwear has been found! Gaze upon the these lovelies destined for Daisy’s toes this fall!

Another look at Nordstrom provided a vision for our bride, the Jeffrey Campbell ‘Pearl’ Flat. These are really cute but still elegant, a very tough combo to pull off for any occasion, but for a wedding? Wow. Miraculously, we can now breath a collective sigh of relief and whisper a grateful “Mission Accomplished.”  Miss Daisy extends a heartfelt “Thank You” to everyone who so generously offered their assistance and helped in the hunt!

Next on today’s hit parade, has everyone noticed the recently released Keys Collection from Tiffany?

The group features key pendants in a variety of precious metals (sterling to platinum) and gemstones.  From Tiffany’s news release:

“The work of skilled goldsmiths and silversmiths, these exquisitely crafted vintage keys unlocked jewelry and keepsake boxes, albums, diaries and steamer trunks, as well as private clubs and country manors.”

Hhhhhmmm….this is one we’ll have to ponder dolls. What do you think?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The always-fun I Want You Now blog gave us another take on ‘preppy style’ in a post fittingly titled Preppy Chic is Back.  The post offers a couple of looks by designer Luella Bartlett, including this one.

The post is a fun read, and there is also an excellent Polyvore board.

Now, we are curious about a claim that purple is listed as a “must buy” color for kids.  That doesn’t srprise us so much as this WWD story (subscription req’d.); it makes this claim:

“When it comes to girls’ shoes, purple is the new pink.”

Moms, Aunts, Grandmoms, you simply must advise The Princess, as we were unaware of this! Below, a few of the items used in illustrating the story, starting with the Benetton boot:

Do tell, as we are feeling helplessly out of touch. Sigh.

Carolyne Roehm for Best & Co., Sketches from the new Gwyneth Paltrow Line

Hello-Hello and welcome to another wild week at the Prepatorium!

We start off with a heartfelt ‘Thank You” to the inimitable Queen Bee Swain, and her generosity in bestowing upon us the Friendship Award!

Thank you Queen Bee Swain

Thank you Queen Bee Swain!

Per the rules: these blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbon of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers. Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award.

Here we go with a quick eight names!

++++++++++++++++++++++

Many readers know that here at the Prepatorium we simply adore the children’s clothing carried by Best & Co.; this spring the retailer has added something special, a line designed by none other than the über-talented Carolyne Roehm.

The Collection won’t be in stores until Mother’s Day, but one can preview the group online right here.

The dresses are simply darling, with the understated elegance one expects from both Ms. Roehm and Best.

Courtesy Best & Co.

There’s no need to be concerned about anything over-the-top, no pieces covered in any frou-frou details or embellishment.  We have long been fond of Ms. Roehm’s design aesthetic; she is possessed of an exquisite eye, and also likes TP’s favorite color combination, blue & white.

In fact, the designer’s newest book is entitled A Passion for Blue and White.  A look behind the scenes at inspiration boards for the Best & Company collection reveals Ms. Roehm’s attention to detail:

There isn’t a piece in the Collection we aren’t in love with.

And all are done in a timeless navy and white, or variations thereof. Sigh. How long until we see grown-up girls sizes, puh-leeze? (Silly Princess.)

Ladylike little dresses are even available for toddlers.

The entire group is simple and sweet, in designs and fabrics that will long stand the test of time, the styles are that classic.  (Now remember dollfaces, these pieces are not available until Mother’s Day.) To read more about it, visit the At Best blog for a nice read!

As we are already at Best, we share a different clothing group: delightful sweaters in Boys sizes.

There is also the Boy’s Anchor Sweater, as well as many others we are not showing here.

Unfortunately, similar offerings for the Young Lady of the house are not as nautically inclined.  This is the only seafaring-ish we could find, the Sailor Sweater in Girls sizes 2-12.

We haven’t yet made time to post anything at all about the news that oh-so-preppy Gwyneth Paltrow is releasing her own clothing line. The actress announced the line will be done in collaboration with Zoe Tees, a French company. The official name is said to be ZOEtee’s Loves Gwyneth, and proceeds will benefit Kids Company in London.

Women’s Wear Daily showed sketches from the new line in a story today.

According to the story, the pieces will include cashmere blends along with other fabrics, and will have a bit of a 70’s look.

The entire collection is to be released sometime this week. TP is ever-so-curious to know your thoughts on these looks…?

We are ever so happy to be adding more items to the shop, including this treasure:

These are the perfect solution for those seeking an alternative to the plastic or paper question when at the market; they measure 19 x 15 x 10, plenty of room for the foie gras and Brie! Besides, the , Bungalow Scout bags and sunny color combinations bring an enormous smile to our face!

On that note, we shall say ‘Bye and look for you tomorrow, back here at the Prepatorium!

A Preppy Idol Contestant? Felix Rey at Target Online Early!

Hello-Hello everyone, and Happy, Happy Friday!

We apologize for the lack of a post yesterday, but the ever-so-wonderful Consort took us out for a late lunch as a surprise, and then we both dawdled with the Brownie Bomb dessert we shared. It was really over the top delicious. Way. Over. The. Top.

We thought we might share a few rather mindless tidbits today, things that won’t tax anyone’s brain, as it has been a long week…oui?

We start with an outstanding invention, updated once again: the Kitchen-Aid 90th Anniversary Mixer, as seen in this slide from Business Week.

005_kitchenaid90thannmixer

Courtesy KitchenAid via Business Week

The Business Week information says the Mixer is available now, but we could not locate it on the KitchenAid website. All we know is that we *love* the idea of the clear bowl!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next on the hit parade, a question we have that will eliminate any doubts readers may harbor about residents of the Prepatorium being “hip.” We are asking if this young man is appropriately referred to as “preppy”?

Courtesy American Idol

Courtesy American Idol

Apparently he is a contestant on the wildly popular American Idol television show; following is a snippet from the LA Times blog American Idol Tracker:

“Nor will Anoop Desai’s survival…(be a )surprise… considering the wholesome heat the preppy pinup projects.”

Is he a “preppy pin-up” in your estimation?

Wholesome heat. Indeed.

WWD recently carried a story on the Fall 2009 collection from Nautica.

We love the location the company selected for their presentation of the collection: aboard the USS Intrepid.

A wise choice from a marketing perspective, as it may reinforce a belief that Nautica actually has seagoing roots, which it does not.

Because yours truly is such a selfish beast, we far prefer gazing at the brand’s apparel for women. How do you like their Boat Couture collection?

Nautica.com

Nautica.com

There is loads to love with this group, it is that simple. Now anyone who has spent any time on a boat knows “Boat Couture” is almost an oxymoron, unless one is planning to be a guest on an ELB (Extra Large, or Excessively Large Boat), but that’s not what this is all about. It is about goodies like the Cotton Cashmere Anchor Sweater.

Nautica.com

Nautica.com

Available in two colorways, machine-washable and only $78, this one merits consideration for your sweater collection. For a fun little top, the Pima Cotton Sail Tee is not only darling, but also fiscally-friendly.

There are so many other divine pieces, we may need to do an entirely separate post! We’ll cease our shrieking about the fabulosity by showing the little Girl’s Stinson Canvas Tote.

Nautica.com

At only $19.50 we can overlook the twitches arising from a mild case of Logophobia, and instead sing the praises of the bow and the madras. A reminder: to the best of our knowledge Nautica no longer does women’s clothing for retail stores, they are only making it available online. (Sniff.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A quick heads-up on the Felix Rey for Target Collection due in stores this Sunday, March 29.  Most of the Collection is now available online, twelve pieces are shown on the site.

Frequent readers are familiar with our Pretty In Pink feature, which is precisely as it sounds. While this next item is pink, personal taste prevents it fitting in the PIP category, so we’ll simply say “Here is a _____ in Pink.”

Courtesy Shuella.com

Courtesy Shuella.com

Yes, they are back: the Shuella shoe/boot covers are all ready for upcoming April showers.

For today’s actual Pretty in Pink we are ever-so-happy to feature two darling girls whom we have known for ages. Really. For. Ages.

Meet Pete and Wendy, two charming, bright, witty and beautiful dolls we more-than-adore. Wendy is the whiz behind The Princess website look, and Pilar is someone we have known since she was…. well, you just don’t want to know! (Her mother is TP’s closest friend after The Consort & The Queen Mother.)

Knowing they would be sending us photos of their days scampering about southern California, they dressed in their best Princess colors. (We could almost have this picture do double-duty as an Adventure in Argyle.)

In fact, we told Petey we didn’t care about her follow-through form, it was all about the wardrobe.

What a terrible message for us to send these young ladies, both still at an impressionable age…sigh.  Naughty Princess.

On that note, we hope you are able to enjoy some Pretty in Pink of your own this weekend!

A Gossip Girl is Pretty in Pink, J. Crew Sneak Peek

Hello-Hello everyone, and happy rainy day!

Yes, it is raining cats & dogs, but for many reasons, we are in happy mode here at the Prepatorium. One reason could be our gratitude for so many things, some of them seemingly insignificant, but special little markers in the ebb and flow of a day. Seeing darling photos on Facebook from a friend’s daughter in her finest pink & green tennis apparel, the chance to be a conduit in helping someone who is mourning the loss of a loved one, making plans for an evening with the ladies for Club Mom tonight. (Despite our status as a non-Mom, at least of human children, which is generally the standard for determining such things.)

We start with a thank to our new bloggy friend, Kebi, at Hanging by a Thread.

She hosted a giveaway and look what The Princess won! How fabulous are these?! Thank you Miss Kebi!

Next, a sneak peek at some of the pieces in J. Crew’s Fall 2009 collection.

Courtesy J. Crew via WWD

The photos accompany this story in Women’s Wear Daily online (subscription required).

In the story J. Crew execs share some of the theory behind this Fall’s collection:

“We paid attention to things we know make people happy,” said creative director Jenna Lyons Mazeau of the T-shirts sporting giant jewel-encrusted necks and dog prints. “Everyone needs a little levity right now.”

J. Crew Courtesy Photo via WWD.com

J. Crew Courtesy Photo via WWD.com

Hhhhmmm… what do you think? Recognizing that more earth tones are seen in fall collections, we still hoped for some brighter pops of color. Perhaps WWD just didn’t select any of those photos for their story, or they weren’t provided. We’ll cross our fingers.

As far as the Men’s styles are concerned:

“…it was all about the unexpected. Classic pieces such as chunky cardigans, chalk-striped suits, buffalo-plaid sport shirts and trenchcoats sported unique touches such as leather buttons or lighter-weight fabrics that updated the trends and made them modern.”

Banana Republic is pursuing a new concept store featuring accessories only. “Edition by Banana Republic” is slated to open at Westfield Mall in San Francisco in mid-May.  The store will carry limited edition items that will not be available online or at Banana Republic stores, an interesting tactic from a strategic standpoint.

In a Monday story, WWD explains most everything in the shop will be priced at less than $100, another wise move on the retailer’s part.  Below, the ‘Luxe jasmine chandelier earrings in semi-precious green onyx for $79.’

This one will be fun to watch; hopefully we’ll have some ‘on-the-scene-reports’ from our west coast bloggers!

For today’s Pretty in Pink we feature a face familiar to many readers, the lovely Blake Lively from TV’s Gossip Girl.  Ms. Lively is seen in a fun frock after her appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday evening.

Courtesy Flynet

Courtesy Fly Net

Earlier this week Ms. Lively and co-star Penn Badgley (also her real-life love) were seen out to dinner with a Hollywood heavy hitter, Harvey Weinstein.

Mr. Weinstein’s wife, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman made it a foursome. Naturally everyone is all abuzz, wondering if a Gossip Girl film is in the works.

We can’t help ourselves, and simply must share another Pretty in Pink. Meet Millie, the spoilt red-headed child.

'Millie

'Milly the Spoilt Red-haired Child'

Milly is the creation of Yali, a gifted artisan with a remarkable shop on etsy.

Is Milly preppy? We think not. Do we have red hair? No, we do not. But we don’t care about these dreary facts, as Milly just epitomizes perfectly how The Princess has felt at times, and we find her altogether loveable.  There are loads of other treasures at this shop, including magnets, prints, more dolls, and all of them are just fun-fun-fun!

That’s it for us dollfaces, we are frantic for time!

Pink’s New Shirt, Talbots & Target Sneak Peeks

Hello-hello!

We are hyper-busy today, so we shall do some quick blog-bombs! (Essentially Headlines with a brief tidbit, and/or photos.)

There will be a new addition to this fall’s line of Thomas Pink shirts. This WWD story explains the upscale retailer’s announcement that it will offer a wrinkle-free shirt in its Men’s line.  An intriguing thought, although we are somewhat disconcerted, uncertain we wish to purchase ‘crease-resistant’ shirts for the Consort at Pink.

Speaking of TSU (The Spousal Unit), he was more-than-disappointed to learn one of his favorite haunts for apparel is struggling.  Mark Shale becomes another unfortunate SOTT (Sign of the Times), with word they are filing bankruptcy and plan to close stores in Kansas City, Atlanta, and Dallas. The 3 Chicago-area stores will be kept open as a buyer for them is sought; the outlet store closed on Monday.

When visiting Chicago it is not unusual for TSU to pop into the Michigan Avenue store; he is also fond of the Galleria location (Dallas).  The retailer has women’s apparel as well, with brands many readers will recognize for their exceptional quality and style. This is a shame, as Mark Shale runs an outstanding operation with customer service unmatched by 99.% of their counterparts.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Those who follow TP on Twitter may remember yesterday’s Tweet about Talbots’ boosting the age of its target customer; previously they were hoping to reach Women age 45 – 55/65, now it is 45 to 65+.  Yikes.

We wanted to share a few looks from Talbots’ fall line. (We don’t know if these styles fit with a marketing plan aimed at women 65+… your thoughts?)

Courtesy Photo via WWD

The look in the picture above seems more suitable for the under-55 demo IOHO, while this next style easily transcends age.

Courtesy Photo via WWD

The Women’s Wear Daily story describes some of the looks:

“Among some of the highlights of the fall collection, are cardigans with ruffles, bows and rosettes; printed scarves and waist sashes; sheath and lace evening dresses from $129 to $149…”

Courtesy Photo via WWD

Here in the corner condo we are hopeful these photos do not represent the best of the fall fashions, as there is little that appealed to us.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have an update on the eco-friendly Loomstate for Target Collection due in stores in time for Earth Day which is April 22.

These next two photos are via the fabulous Nitrolicious, who has several more pictures from the group on her site.

Pieces in the collection will range in price from $14.99 through $44.99. The men’s collection will be in stores about a month longer than the women’s, but as with many of Target’s limited edition collections, pieces may go quickly.

That serves as a good reminder: the Thakoon for Target Collection is now drastically reduced. The clearance pricing includes things like tops at $4.24 and dresses at $13.99

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For today’s Pretty in Pink we have several offerings, simply because we have absolutely no self-control in some areas. (We recognize that for most readers this is not new information.)

How about the Hello Kitty Polka Dots rain coat for kids?

Of course there is a matching Hello Kitty umbrella available, also at DLL Rainwear.

No need to be alarmed about finding something of this sort for your very own: the Pink Damask Raincoat for Women.

On that cheery note we say ‘bye, as we fly out the door!

Monday Musings

Hello and welcome to a new week!

We must share a delightful little excursion we enjoyed this weekend, visiting our dear and sweet Hannah at the Bobbi Brown counter located in our nearest Nordstrom.

Bobbi Brown

Bobbi Brown

One of our most exciting purchases was a new Platinum Pink Shimmer Brick.  (Secretly dolls, we queried Hannah, asking if it was still age-appropriate for TP to be ‘shimmering.’ The response was enthusiastically affirmative, thank heaven.) This is a new collection that looks ultra-fun, just in time for updated spring and summer looks!

Additionally we enjoyed seeing Hannah’s friend Stephanie, also a cosmetics whiz and Bobbi consultant. But most importantly, a very-recently-engaged Stephanie. We had been on pins and needles since first meeting Stephanie about a month as she was prepping for a very important day with her boyfriend. She confided that she hoped the evening might prove to be be “the night” he asked the question.  He did, and now the young lady is positively beaming so brightly she could power all the lights in the store with the wattage from her smile.

And then we were spoiled by Kristen, also with Bobbi Brown. She was in the store to do ‘makeovers’ using some of the new products being introduced, and she did TP’s face.  Kristen is one talented college student who did a spectacular job, making us feel happily pampered! These are all such darling young ladies, it is delightful to see the hard work and optimism they all carry within their spirits.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now we offer a grateful acknowledgement of the kindness and generosity from a wonderful blogger, the Spanish Preppy Girl, who nominated TP for the Kreativ Blogger Award.  Thank you! Because we have been more-than-fortunate to have received this award previously, we are going to spare everyone another list of details about our life, a practice prompting applause all over Planet Blog, to be sure. (Pero, muchisimos gracias Miss SPG!)

We also thank another student with exquisite taste, the fabulous Little Bow Prep, who graciously tagged us with the Show Your Heart tag. As a rule we would be unlikely to participate in this one, as we were raised with a firm belief that sharing information of this nature is pretty much verboten, as there is nothing more boring than conversation about oneself.  However, we think the world of Little Bow Prep and do not want to disappoint her, and then we struggled with a much more frightening issue: isn’t blogging frequently about oneself? There’s a thought we shall have to ponder.

Following her lead, we are directed to:

Show your heart in one picture:

.

...one poem:

WILL YOU BE MY FRIEND?

Who am I? I am not sure.
Who are you? I want to know.
We didn’t sell Kool-aid together or hitchhike to school. We’re not from the same town, the same God, hardly the same world. There is no role to play, no security to provide, no commitment to make. I expect no answer save your presence, your eyes, your self. Friendship is freedom, is flowing, is
rare. It does not need stimulation, it stimulates itself. It trusts, understands, grows, explores, it smiles and weeps. It does not exhaust or cling, expect or demand. It is–and that is enough–and it dreams a lot.

WILL YOU BE MY FRIEND?

(NOTE: This is merely one stanza taken from the poem by James Kavanaugh.)

...one item of clothing:

We share an example of a fashion style, rather than efforting an image of a contemporary party frock. (You do see the big bow, yes?)

v2112

While the era depicted in the vintage Vogue pattern pre-dates us, it makes us think once again that perhaps we would have fit in better as a young lady in the 1960’s…?

...one song:

If you click here you will hear a portion of an early John Williams score, a composition for the television film Jane Eyre, starring a young George C. Scott.

51pwdwy3qql_sl500_aa280_

...one place:

A private home that we initially visited on our honeymoon, located on St. John in the middle of a US National Park. We return as frequently as possible.

…one quote:

Never, never, never, never give up.

– Winston Churchill

Sir Winston, short, sweet, and to the point.

We express our thanks to Little Bow Prep for passing this on. We now offer it to a few classic stylemakers we admire, Lipstick at the Mailbox, Europa Fox, Mom x 2Queen Bee Swain, Misadventures of a Newlywed, and I Pick Pretty

We are flying out the door into the sunshine!
