Pink’s New Shirt, Talbots & Target Sneak Peeks

Hello-hello!

We are hyper-busy today, so we shall do some quick blog-bombs! (Essentially Headlines with a brief tidbit, and/or photos.)

There will be a new addition to this fall’s line of Thomas Pink shirts. This WWD story explains the upscale retailer’s announcement that it will offer a wrinkle-free shirt in its Men’s line.  An intriguing thought, although we are somewhat disconcerted, uncertain we wish to purchase ‘crease-resistant’ shirts for the Consort at Pink.

Speaking of TSU (The Spousal Unit), he was more-than-disappointed to learn one of his favorite haunts for apparel is struggling.  Mark Shale becomes another unfortunate SOTT (Sign of the Times), with word they are filing bankruptcy and plan to close stores in Kansas City, Atlanta, and Dallas. The 3 Chicago-area stores will be kept open as a buyer for them is sought; the outlet store closed on Monday.

When visiting Chicago it is not unusual for TSU to pop into the Michigan Avenue store; he is also fond of the Galleria location (Dallas).  The retailer has women’s apparel as well, with brands many readers will recognize for their exceptional quality and style. This is a shame, as Mark Shale runs an outstanding operation with customer service unmatched by 99.% of their counterparts.

Those who follow TP on Twitter may remember yesterday’s Tweet about Talbots’ boosting the age of its target customer; previously they were hoping to reach Women age 45 – 55/65, now it is 45 to 65+.  Yikes.

We wanted to share a few looks from Talbots’ fall line. (We don’t know if these styles fit with a marketing plan aimed at women 65+… your thoughts?)

The look in the picture above seems more suitable for the under-55 demo IOHO, while this next style easily transcends age.

The Women’s Wear Daily story describes some of the looks:

“Among some of the highlights of the fall collection, are cardigans with ruffles, bows and rosettes; printed scarves and waist sashes; sheath and lace evening dresses from $129 to $149…”

Here in the corner condo we are hopeful these photos do not represent the best of the fall fashions, as there is little that appealed to us.

We have an update on the eco-friendly Loomstate for Target Collection due in stores in time for Earth Day which is April 22.

Pieces in the collection will range in price from $14.99 through $44.99. The men’s collection will be in stores about a month longer than the women’s, but as with many of Target’s limited edition collections, pieces may go quickly.

That serves as a good reminder: the Thakoon for Target Collection is now drastically reduced. The clearance pricing includes things like tops at $4.24 and dresses at $13.99

For today’s Pretty in Pink we have several offerings, simply because we have absolutely no self-control in some areas. (We recognize that for most readers this is not new information.)

How about the Hello Kitty Polka Dots rain coat for kids?

Of course there is a matching Hello Kitty umbrella available, also at DLL Rainwear.

No need to be alarmed about finding something of this sort for your very own: the Pink Damask Raincoat for Women.

On that cheery note we say ‘bye, as we fly out the door!

Is J. Crew Discounting Too Much? And the Free Preppy Goodies – Enter Now!

Courtesy J. Crew

Courtesy J. Crew

Most readers have seen this email alert from J. Crew.  As many are no doubt aware, it is just one of many promotional efforts from the retailer that have hit our electronic in-bins recently.  And the company is not alone in its aggressive promotional moves; we are hard-pressed to come up with any retailers not currently promoting some sort of discount or sale to customers.  (If anyone is not aware of the discount shown in the photo above, it offers 20% off full-price sweaters and ends Thursday night at midnight; the promo code needed at checkout is SWEATERS.)

However, elsewhere on the J. Crew site one finds this:

Courtesy J. Crew

Courtesy J. Crew

… and this sale is not a discount or promotional price that ends tomorrow at midnight, as with the sweaters. This is an ongoing sale offering very deep discounts, especially for a retailer of Crew’s caliber, with items like the Men’s Patchwork tartan vest that originally sold at $228 now offered at $59.99.  The Princess is no mathologist, but it seems to us that is almost 75% off the original price.

And the site is full of merchandise on Sale, not all at this level of markdown, but a hefty amount nonetheless.  Why are deep discounts, other than the obvious appeal they hold for most of us, an issue? Because they make investors in the company’s stock nervous.  From Thomson Financial News:

“Shares of the preppy clothing company run by Wall Street darling and former Gap Inc CEO Mickey Drexler fell 14 percent to their life-time low of $11.90 in morning trade.”

The article cites a memo written by a stock analyst:

“…’The worst is yet to come for J. Crew, which has continued to reel under a weak economy’ …analyst Eric Beder wrote in a note to clients…”

“…surveys and store tours have shown J. Crew is becoming “more and more aggressive,” to clear out inventory….

While TP is always excited to see merchandise offered at more fiscally friendly price points, Crew cannot be making much profit on this Cashmere Sequin Shell being sold for $49.99, roughly 70% less than its original price of $158.

The story also quotes the analyst:

“We do not believe the J. Crew business model works at the current levels and depth of price cuts,” he wrote.”

J. Crew Group’s stock closed at a new all-time low this afternoon, $11.64 per share. Ouch. We wish we were a bigger and better person Ladies, but let’s face it: their pain is your gain.

More Ralph Lauren Olympic Uniforms, Hilfiger Tests Kids Store in Las Vegas, Luke Russert is in at NBC, Maria Sharapova is Out in Beijing

Hello everyone and Happy-Happy-Happy Friday! We hope everyone is expecting to enjoy some glorious sunshine and outdoors time this weekend; we’re headed to the Big Lake but will attempt to keep posting whilst away. Can anyone believe the Olympics start in just a week? My goodness!

When we first shared the sneak peek photos of the Ralph Lauren designed US Olympic Team uniforms on Tuesday we said we would be back with a little more follow-up and information. We’re not sure how you feel about them, but the reviews in the major fashion media seem to be positive. Words like ‘Preptastic’ and ‘Prepsterism’ were accompanied by phrases like ‘iconic as the polo symbol’ (?) to describe the navy blazers and cream trousers athletes will wear in the formal opening ceremonies. We’ve not seen as much about the white shorts and polo shirt offset by the red, white & blue belt for the much more relaxed closing ceremonies. In case you missed the original post, here’s a shot of the Opening Ceremony look for the team.

Naturally there is reaction other than that from the fashion and ‘preppy’ communities. Reuters (News Service) has been running a story about the factory in China where the uniforms are being made. They have soundbites with the manager discussing the “challenges” of creating roughly 1800 unique and different uniforms with all their nuances and variation; the gentleman is clearly stressed by the demands of the enormous task. Here is a link to the video that we can only pray will work; as you know, The Princess is more than a bit technically challenged.

The man’s stress is completely understandable in our humble opinion if the story-slash-myth is true that the intermediary for the deal was Tom Brokaw and the arrangements weren’t put to bed until December. That is more than a little late in the game (pun intended) for this sort of thing.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On to the ‘next new thing,’ Tommy Hilfiger’s Kids store in Las Vegas.

Your young ones can ‘belly up’ to this bar and you don’t have to worry about them being served a drink. It’s a “candy bar” at the recently opened Tommy Hilfiger Kids store in Las Vegas. Right now the only Children’s section in a Hilfiger store is in Soho, so this is a new idea complete with a pinball machine, pint-sized furniture and novelties aimed at the younger set.

The retailer is testing this concept, but seems firm about the standalone denim shop and sportswear stores they’ll be opening in Las Vegas; those are concepts they plan to focus their energies on. As the company continues growing, look for a Tommy Hilfiger ‘flagship store’ opening in New York on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Isn’t that an interesting day to open store… probably very smart.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This may be old news to many of you, but for those who haven’t heard, Luke Russert is joining NBC News. Most of America, if not the world, became familiar with the son of NBC News journalist Tim Russert following the anchor’s death in June.

Russert, 22, a May graduate of Boston College with a degree in history and communications, will cover the youth vote through the national political conventions and the general election, the network said. Russert said he would be an at-large correspondent reporting for many of NBC’s outlets, including “NBC Nightly News,” TODAY, MSNBC and msnbc.com.

Good for him. As Russert points out, he is not without media experience, having done a radio show for more than 2 years. His role as a big fish in a little pond will be changing as he shrinks to something smaller swimming in a much larger and choppier sea. TP wishes him luck.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of that network, the NBC Olympics Grand Pooh-bahs are most likely having kittens about now. American gymnast Paul Hamm’s withdrawal is a definite ratings hit, and now there is word that Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is also out. Both were forced to withdraw because of injuries; it seems likely Ms. Sharapova will be able to play in the US Open either.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

With the start of the Olympic Games so close, here is a great shot of No. 1 ranked Laser Radial sailor Anna Tunnicliffe (left) of Team USA. Find out why so many of the members of the US Olympic Sailing Team have been doing the major diet. Bigtime.

What is TP taking to the beach for reading material?

Well, one going in the tote bag is the newly released Party Favors, described this way:

Temple Sachet’s got style, smarts, and the party planning gene in her blood. Having grown up in New Orleans, surrounded by the pageantry of Mardi Gras, Temple learned a thing or two about how to turn a fantastic party into a money maker. It’s a skill that pays off big when her gala for the Missouri Opera turns into a Ray of Hope internship at the White House. Within weeks, Temple’s caught Potomac Fever—a hopeless, incurable addiction to D.C. for which there is only one cure: a nasty-tasting spoonful of disillusionment….

Party Favors gives a deliciously witty peek into the secretive world of political fundraising in D.C. Written by a former Director of Finance for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the novel explores the very real truth that favor means you owe, winning won’t save you, and, ultimately, you will be betrayed.

Another Brilliant Ralph Lauren Move + Something Special for the Guys

Hello and aren’t we happy-happy-happy it is Friday? Anyone headed toward water this weekend? Finally off to the cottage for the rest of the summer? We hope so! And fie on those retailers touting Back to School and End of Summer Sales, not to mention the Sale to End All Sales plus the Our Sale is Better than Your Sale Sale!

Although… The Princess does recognize her role in perpetuating those very promotions somewhat with her continual harping about said sales. Please consider this our formal apology for past actions and a foreshadowing of future behavior. Because we *so* heart your pocketbook (that is how one says it, yes?) we will continue sharing that sale information.

We do have a thought from Polo Ralph Lauren for those desperate-for-an-activity-days Nanny often encounters whilst at the cottage with the children; we’ll get there in a minute. But first an update on the Polo Ralph Lauren Olympic Games Collection. If you’ll recall from our earlier post on this group, there was a tone of disappointment at the lack of merchandise for Girls. As expected, that situation has been rectified with several more items in the Girls Olympic Games Collection.

New to the line are the Olympic Games Fleece Pullover in white in Sizes 7-16;

along with the Olympic Games Ringer Tee in Sizes 2-6x;

and the Olympic Games Hoodie available in Sizes 2-6x and 7-14. Frankly, TP expects even more Girls merchandise before the end of the Games, but we could be wrong.

Now on to what The Princess referred to as a ‘brilliant move’ in the title to this post: the Ralph Lauren Paint Your Own Polo Kit. It’s best to go with the PLR description on this one:

Let your child express her individuality and style with our new Paint Your Own Polo. With a variety of paints, brushes and stamps, the mesh polo shirt inside our signature Ralph Lauren paint can truly become your child’s own.

Now, how smart is this? These are non-toxic paints, the shirt is going to be machine-washable, ultimately Mom and Dad are going to have a lovely memento of Bitsy and Drake’s budding artistic skills, and best of all, this one is for charity! All of the proceeds go to the Pink Pony Fund for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Pediatric Art Therapy Program. Of course there is also a kit for the young man in the family.

And since we seem to be covering all things Ralph Lauren today, a reminder that the Black Watch polo team Ralph Lauren sponsors plays this weekend at the opening of the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge Cup in Bridgehampton.

One more find before we dash – Espadrilles, etc.

One reason we love these folks is their broad selection for men. We think you will like their style.

Do have a splendid weekend.

Preppy Sales at J Crew (Online Only & Limited Time), Ralph Lauren, + Saks Fifth Avenue

J Crew Preppy Millie Ballet Flats J Crew Patchwork Ballet Flat

It’s that time of year when the online In-bin becomes flooded with Sale notices. Today’s include J. Crew‘s Additional 20% Off, and Ralph Lauren. Decisions, decisions. In some respects J Crew makes it a tad easier because of their “Additional 20% Off” discount, but keep in mind this is online only and it ends on Saturday night at 10pm. BTW, the discount is not applied until you place the merchandise in your online shopping bag. We are starting with shoes, and above we show the J Crew Millie Ballet Flat, absolutely ideal for so many functions, but looking to be in limited supply size-wise. Next we have the Patchwork Ballet Flat in Lemon Papya, very sweet and apparently available in a much broader range of sizes. And just in case it’s still in effect, definitely go for the J Crew free shipping on $100+ orders. The code is SUMMERTIME.

Ralph Lauren Polo Caliana Kidskin Suede Flat Ralph Lauren Mona Chambray Dress

Natori Heavenly Capri PJs at Saks 5th Fifth Avenue Tory Burch Carly Sheath Dress on sale Saks 5th Fifth Avenue

Now, not to ‘diss’ Saks up in the title for this post, it’s simply that we don’t really classify them as a particularly “Preppy” brand. They’re simply a haven (and heavenly also since we are thinking about it!) for a plethora of “have to have” basics. But now that we’re here, can we talk about one of TP’s favorites, Natori? Lush, plush and posh. Take their Heavenly Capri PJs, now on sale; they are so wonderful you won’t want to take them off, I promise. ( Dolls, do yourselves a favor and take a peek at the Josie Natori Great Expectations Camisole, another gorgeous garment that is definitely Prepalicious.)Then there is one of the season’s hottest items, the Tory Burch Carly Sheath Dress, which comes in an uber-elegant navy, or the more playful print seen here. This treasure is crafted of another ultra-comfy material, cotton with just a touch of spandex to make it feel wonderful all day or all night long.

Sunny Shoes for a Rainy Day

Garvelin Kids Toddlers preppy shoesOkay, we did our share of the rainy daze & Mondays whine with the Paris Hilton Anti-Prep post and now it’s time to atone for our sins. Does this sound like your true-to-form CAP (Catholic American Princess?!) or what?! Not to worry, we still can’t resist some of these fabulous shoes for the kids, and we’re posting them. They’re like a sunny day here in the rain-addled Midwest.

The first pair is from European designers Garvalin, just waiting for you at Zappos, of course. They score a 7 or 8 on the Prepalicious scale (obviously they lose a point for that logo placement) and are most assuredly worth a glance. Next on our hit parade is the ever-so-cute Primigi kids Alegra.Of course you already know the bow makes yours truly simply ga-ga.

Kids ShoesPrimigi Kids again

If you are looking for something a little brighter, the pink & green floral pair is a great style statement from Pablosky, also a European designer, also waiting for you at Zappos with your name on the box! How about this stylin’ pair in madras for the little guy in your life, perfect to wear on his way to and from tennis lessons at the Club this summer. Pablosky Girls Madras shoes

Pablosky Boys Madras shoes

Any pair in pink and green with a touch of argyle has to make our list, and these from Primigi are no different, available at Shoes.com.

The final pair are so sweet and sophisticated they make you look twice, but not in an inappropriate or ostentatious way, of course. This take on a modern Mary Jane is also from Primigi, with its timeless Chanel look. Now if we could only find something that divine in our size, we would be a much happier Princess, I can assure you.

May the sun be with you and those you love today!  🙂
