Tory Burch & The Snuggie at Fashion Week, 2 Designer eBay Collections

Hello-Hello everyone, hopefully the sun is shining as brightly at your palace as it is here, there is nary a cloud in the sky, it is simply gorgeous.

Because we feel required to bring readers as much fashion news as humanly possible (ahem), and because we do take this responsibility ever-so-seriously (double ahem), we begin today’s post with something you are unlikely to find elsewhere:

Oh yes indeedy, TP is sharing these not-quite-exclusive photos from the Snuggie show at Fashion Week.  We ask, where else will you see shots of not only an adult Snuggie, but a pink one for your pooch?

Look at this amazing photo from backstage – the anticipatory excitement is palpable. Can you feel it?

The show was held at the Park Avenue Hotel (oh my!), and forced fashion mavens to make an exceptionally difficult decision: how does one choose between this amazing event and the Mulberry or Brian Reyes shows?

For those seeking more on the collection this review from WNBC offers some insight:

“As for the styles, the runway looks ranged from simple-and-classic — basic blue and even bone-colored pieces — to animal-print sexy.”

Don’t let it be said we don’t share the joy here at the Prepatorium, nay-nay, meeting your every fashion and style need is our goal. Indeed.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Readers know we also try and meet those goals by sharing photos of the fashionistas from that faux-prep school show Gossip Girl. Below, Blake Lively was on hand for the Marchesa show.

As always, the gowns at Marchesa were exquisite:

And while much too chic for us, we’ll say this is a Pretty in Pink for today, it is one stunning gown.

Perhaps of more interest to our readers – the Tory Burch presentation yesterday.

tory-burch07tory-burch17

As described by the Times:

“Tory Burch received a lot of retail love on Wednesday as the chiefs of Saks, Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, along with their buying teams, gathered…”

tory-burch15

tory-burch12

We found some styles appealing, and others just so-so.

tory-burch20tory-burch01

The Journal also had rave reviews for the collection:

“The jammed tent was further proof of Ms. Burch’s buzz as well as her business savvy. She worked the crowd from her spot at the end of the runway, warmly greeting those in attendance. She did leave her station, however, to take Anna Wintour on a tour of her collection.”

PHOTO: George Chinsee/WWD

PHOTO: George Chinsee/WWD

More from the Journal review:

“The outfits were her usual mix of infinitely wearable pieces, with her penchant for preppy and love of tribal both well represented. A floral jumpsuit, with bright tulips set against a navy background, as well as a coral suit, set the tone for spring.”

tory-burch14tory-burch13

This blouse reminded us of a paper lantern:

PHOTO: George Chinsee/WWD

We are clearly not in the know, as we thought some styles were neither ‘preppy’ or ‘tribal’:

PHOTO: George Chinsee

PHOTO: George Chinsee

But then, we only managed one year of fashion study in college before moving on and our knowledge of the topic is scant compared to that of those writing for the trades and the major newspapers covering the industry. (Pssst, we actually have an interest in trying on the leather skinny pants, however non-preppish they may be!)

We thought some looks oozed comfy, snuggly, casual fun.

PHOTO: George Chinsee/WWD

PHOTO: George Chinsee/WWD

The neutral palette seemed subdued for spring and summer, but it also affords many pieces a longer and more versatile life.  Here is our favorite part of the Journal’s review:

“The only glimpse of her signature ‘T’ logo—the one that she plastered on her ballet flats and that made her a designer for the masses—was on a select number of purses.”

That is news of a logotastic sort.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

There is more big news out of Fashion Week: a second designer will launch a collection on eBay.  First we had news that Narciso Rodriguez plans an 8-piece capsule collection to be sold next spring.

And today news broke via Women’s Wear Daily that Norma Kamali will also sell a line on eBay, with pieces priced under $250.  This is in addition to the collection she already does for Walmart, NK for Walmart.

Very quickly before we fly, two shameless pieces of self-promotion, beginning with news that our Whitney English notesheets made the October O List!

FNO Follow-up & Fashion Week: the Lacoste Look

Hello-Hello, and welcome to the work week…!

We want to follow up on our post about FNO, Fashion’s Night Out, as there was excitement in the stores and in the street with this enormous event. With the season premiere of Gossip Girl just hours away it seems only proper to start with Blake Lively, at Polo Ralph Lauren.

Here is another shot, with Camilla Belle, Nacho Figueras (the polo playing model), Ms. Lively and David Lauren.

St. John took on a special look for what they dubbed “Studio 53,” we like the little touch of humor. BTW, St. John’s tweeds for fall are TDF, we highly recommend treating yourself to a look!

Over at Brook Brothers, designer Thom Browne helped unveil a new product for the retailer.

Now here’s a quartet: Sarah Jessica Parker, Barbara Walters and Bette Midler joined Oscar de la Renta in a little singing at his shop.

Reviews are mixed on actual sales (as opposed to shoppers) generated by the promotion, but as a stand-alone event, Fashion’s Night Out was clearly an enormous success.

Moving on to Fashion Week, there is loads to share, today we look at the Lacoste Spring 2010 RTW collection.

We simply adore the look seen above, fun, flirty, and filled of understated elegance.

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

For some reason we prefer Spring RTW (Ready to Wear) shows over the Fall and Winter collections, probably because we find the sunny, warmer seasons vastly superior to their cold and gloomy counterparts.

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

The review in WWD offers more on the Collection:

“a relaxed French sensibility — “simple, sporty and chic” according to show notes…”

Men’s styles echoed the colors and lines seen with the womenswear.

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

More from the WWD review:

“Shapes were slouchy and swishy, as in terrific roomy knits, poplin micropleated skirts, poncholike toppers and ultrachic wide-leg linen pants.”

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

One unfortunate men’s top was reminiscent of something generally seen on the football field.

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

And one women’s look seemed more appropriate to the hospital OR (think surgical scrubs), but this was more a function of pairing both pieces in the same color combination, than a flaw with the basic styles or colors.

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

Overall we thought almost every look offered lots of possibilities.

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

It is best summed up by these lines from the WWD review:

“The obligatory crisp whites (often with navy piping) were mixed with chambrays and whiffs of the sea via blue and green shades, which, coupled with the chic stripes and a charming dot print, lent a refreshing feel to the clothes — some of the label’s best to date.”

Much of the credit for this goes to Lacoste’s creative director Christophe Lemaire.

Tiffany Makes the Princess Pout

Hello and happy Thursday!

Today we are doing the post in two parts, so that those not interested in listening to our tale of trauma can scoot over here and read all about sales of a Preptastic sort and gaze upon the loveliness of pink and green shoes you may actually want to wear!

Today we are being completely self-centered, wallowing in self-pity. We will also advise readers up front we are more than a little peeved at one of our formerly-favorite retailers, Tiffany. (Please note emphasis on “formerly”.) Why?

DISCONTINUED

DISCONTINUED

That would be a photo of Tiffany Blue Band china, and we are violating our self-imposed policy of not boring readers with tedious details about our more-than-pedestrian lives in order to share something we would never have revealed previously because we are just. So. Boring.  Who cares what dinnerware is used here at the Prepatorium for more formal occasions..? Perzactly.

Those who follow us on Twitter already know the news: we learned yesterday our pattern has been discontinued. Under normal circumstances we might be a tad despondent about this, but would move quickly to decision-making mode and go on to the next step.  But then, this would hinge on one’s definition of “normal” when dealing with Tiffany these days. For us “normal” meant the company keeping its word regarding policies on customer notification in the unlikely event of a pattern’s discontinuance.

You see, when registering with the company shortly after our engagement, we were assured multiple times that we would receive “proper notice” should this happen. Naturally we were advised of this in the borderline-arrogant tones Tiffany is accused of employing at times with customers, the supercilious “Ah, do you not know with whom you are dealing? This is Tiffany, dear, and we rarely retire patterns. Frankly, we are a little surprised you feel the need to question us about such an unlikely occurrence. But I assure you, of course you will be notified if such a thing is to happen.” (For full impact, insert salesperson’s nose-in-air sniff here.)

Suffice it to say no such notification occurred, nor is there any sign such efforts were made by the retailer. We only discovered the Blue Band’s fate when looking for something entirely unrelated at the website.  After completing our initial task we scooted over to the china department to look at possible additions to our set. Not seeing the pattern online, we thought it best to call the company, laughing internally at our alarmist reaction.

Imagine our dismay at being advised the pattern has been discontinued. After regaining motor skills that allowed us to speak, we made the standard inquiries: when was it discontinued, how can I buy pieces, what-do-you-mean-there-are-no-pieces-anywhere-in-any-warehouse-or-secret-hiding-place?

A darling young lady at the call center did her best, saying “We are emailing customers to let them know.” When we  explained, “But you don’t have my email, there is now way you could ….hello?” she resorted to the dreaded hold function. All we can say is the conversation did not improve. At any point.

There you have it. And yes, we are fully cognizant the world is awash in problems of a vastly more serious nature. We comprehend all this but are still going to pout for at least another day, as it really isn’t about the china pattern at all. Of course not.

It is about losing yet another relic of a more refined and genteel time, when service was provided as a matter of personal pride, a time when we respected ourselves and others more than we seem to now. And it is about the years we have defended Tiffany’s customer service when many consider that phrase an oxymoron. And it is about letting go of the delusion that certain establishments and institutions are the same special places of our youth; they are not, nor will they be.

In an interesting twist, today’s Journal has an outstanding story from the Cranky Consumer (one of our favorite columns), The Dish on Replacing Chipped China.

In today’s vernacular, the Princess needs to get over it.  We’re working on it.

End of whine-a-thon. We apologize for the self-indulgence and extend our gratitude to those kind readers with enough fortitude to continue reading.

Target Announces Next Fashion Designer & Update on Whim Line by Cynthia Rowley

Isaac Mizrahi for Target Seersucker DressIsaac Mizrahi for Target Sheath Dress

Despite Target’s protestations that they wouldn’t need any new designers to replicate Isaac Mizrahi’s success, news came yesterday the discount retailer has indeed signed a new designer. Target announced they have signed Jonathan Saunders for their next GO Collection line. The British designer is not well know in the States, or in most of the world for that matter, having shown his first collection at Fashion Week just this February.

Jonathan Saunders Dress Jonathan Saunders Fall Line 08/09 Dress

Mizrahi’s design philosophy seems quite the opposite of Saunders, whose work is seen above. Mizrahi describes his aesthetic by saying: “I love great color, and clean simple lines.” In contrast, when looking at the Saunders work we are reminded of the famous advertising slogan: “How do we do it? Volume, volume, volume!” This of course refers to the sheer volume of material and number of design elements visible in Saunders Fall/Winter 08/09 Collection.

JOnathan Saunders Spring 2008 Dress Jonathan Saunders

The Princess also viewed some of this Spring’s line from Saunders; some of his work is simply fabulous. The Princess can actually visualize herself in a few of the gowns. However the majority of his pieces are simply too fussy-fussy and frou-frou for us. Sigh. Seeing how the Saunders’ work sells for Target will be most intriguing. We close this topic with two more looks at Saunders’ fall line before moving on to our much-loved Whim Collection from Cynthia Rowley.

Jonathan Saunders Coat Dress Jonathan Saunders Dress

Now for our next topic: regular readers know The Princess has been absolutely gaga over the Cynthia Rowley Whim line at Target; frankly, we believe most of the line qualifies as Prepalicious! The bright and bouncy collection that includes everything from pink madras buckets, brightly striped coolers, sailing motif picture frames. We’ve been a tad worried the retailer might run out of some of the more critical items before the Memorial Day buying begins, as it seems things have just been flying off the shelves!

Whim Pink Madras Plaid Bucket Target Cynthia Rowley Whim Line Cynthia Rowley Whim Target Cooler

The Princess learned today from a *very good source* inside the company that more merchandise continues to be shipped in almost daily. Those big Target semi-trucks you see on the highway are delivering loads of merchandise and workers are getting it out on the shelves as quickly as possible. Nothing is being kept back; it is all going out to make it easier for those of us a little bit in love with the line to snag those pieces we’re still looking for! Whew… that is good news. You can never have too many acrylic glasses for summer parties, right? The Princess had been somewhat concerned the situation was more of a “this is all there is folks” circumstance. We leave you for the time being with a few more photos of our very favorite line. BTW, Cynthia Rowley fans might want to peek at her website for a good look at her current and upcoming Iines; you can even shop at her online store!
