“Happy Preppy Style” & School Daze

Hello-Hello, welcome to a Tue-Wednesday, business is so chaotic we are having to do a double post today.

We begin with a look at something with appeal for just about everyone, “Happy Preppy style,” part of a new book on interior design and decor, “Fresh American Spaces.”  The approach is intriguing.

We know what you’re thinking: you were there for the 1980s incarnation of preppy (and maybe even the 1960s original), and you cringe at the thought of crested blazers, the boat shoes you wore till the soles separated and your toes poked out, or your drawer full of wide plaid headbands. Relax. We’re not turning back the clock. We’re re-imagining preppy in a bold, modern way.

"Fresh American Spaces"

This is just one section of the new book from Annie Selke, it offers color palettes, themes, along with lots of photos and tips for achieving different looks, including one familiar to many of our treasured readers, nautical style.

"Fresh American Spaces" Make Your Own Signal Flags

There are plenty of “how-to” directions, including one on creating your own signal flags.

More from the book:

Happy Preppy is all about simplicity—function dictates form, appearance never outweighs comfort, and easiness is the word of the day. Is it still that happy-go-lucky style you remember? Absolutely. Is it kid- and pet-friendly? Check. Is it pretty? You bet. Is it precious? Never.

Much as we like to promote independent book stores, we also want to share Amazon’s page for the book, several videos are located on the page, including one on “Happy Preppy” style’s nautical flags wall we mention above.

"Fresh American Spaces" Amazon.com

This one is now on the “to read” list.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, back to school styles, we have been seeing them everywhere online, as well as on some of the young ladies and gentlemen in the neighborhood crossing the palace moat on their way to class.  The offerings certainly are varied this year, it remains a mystery how parents can clothe and accessorize a child for anything less than half the national debt!

Below we show two ensembles from The Children’s Place.

The Children's Place

The store offers plenty of basics, like these Fair Isle Cardigans and the Polka Dot cardigan, all priced at $24.95.

The Children's Place

There are plenty of choices for your young man as well.

The Children's Place

On a fiscally friendly note, Children’s Place is running a special, everything is 15% off;  if shopping online use promo code Z4E2011 to receive the discount.

If opting for upscale looks, the fall Milly Minis collection offers some dressier looks, below we show the Cece Dress and Ribbon Cardigan with appliqued bows and grosgrain ribbon. (We’ll take one of the cardigans in sizes grown-up girls sizing.)

Barneys

Also cute, the Stone Island Long Sleeve polo for the young man at your palace, and on the right, the classic stripes of a sailor shirt on the Armor Luxe Breton top, all from Barneys.

Barneys

If looking for simpler styles, it doesn’t get much more basic than these Izod separates at JC Penney.

JC Penney

There are more basics, like the girls Polo Dress, the Long Sleeve Cardigan and the Girls Jumper, all pieces are by Izod and all are on sale for $17.99 – 18.99. The pieces are offered in many more colors than those we show here, brightening up the color scheme and looking a bit less uniform-ish.

JC Penney

Being more colorful doesn’t require a large outlay of cash, the American Living Plaid Sundress is $19.99, the eye-popping Pink and Green Zip Jacket is shown at a bargain price of only $5.99, and the Pants with Repp Tie Stripe Belt come in both navy and khaki, they are $14.99.

JC Penney

Moving again to pieces for your young man, JC Penney has a variety of options, below we show the Preppy Woven Shirt, $17.99 for boys sizes 8 – 20.

JC Penney

Kohl’s offers the Mudd Plaid Camp Shirts in a variety of colors for girls size 7-16.

Kohl's

Kohl’s has put together some outfits that have that “trying too hard” feel when taken all together, some of the elements might be cute on their own.

And there are always plenty of options for your little princess at Lilly.

Until next time, we hope all of your back-to-school adventures are excellent.

Lilly Spring 2011 Pt. 2, “Prep Style Here To Stay” & Sears Buying J. Crew?

Hello-Hello, it is one wild Wednesday here at the Prepatorium, please accept our apologies for such a tardy and lengthy post, sadly it is one of our tedious ‘Wednursday’ (Wednesday-Thursday) epistles, two days of news crammed into one.  Sigh.

As promised, we continue with our preview of this spring’s Lilly Pulitzer Stationery & Gifts collection. (Part 1 may be found here.) We begin with something that is always popular, especially as we approach the season for planning showers, graduation galas, and all sorts of celebrations, Lilly tableware.

Lilly Pulitzer at PreppyPrincess.com

Pre-orders start this week for the new tumblers, napkins, plates and other partyware, with shipping planned for the first or second week of February.  Patterns include Floaters (the lush green and pink design shown above), Do the Wave seen below right… .

Lilly Pulitzer at PreppyPrincess.com

..and However You Slice It, shown below.

"However You Slice It"

A fun item for any casual get-together, new acrylic Wine Glasses that are cute and carefree.

Lilly Pulitzer at PreppyPrincess.com

We do adore the way Lilly creates special treasures for Minnies, and our next item is no exception: the Insulated Lunch Totes are made just for the little ones, but seem likely to be ‘borrowed’ (as in permanently) by whimsical Lilly-loving adults, including your faithful correspondent.

Lilly Pulitzer at PreppyPrincess.com

We show a Tote in Later Gator (the child-sized water bottles are available now, part of the winter line), these also come in Desert Tort.  We like that they are all BPA, phthalate and lead-free; the Lunch Totes have an inside pocket and also come with an ID tag, they will run $19.50, due here at The Prepatorium in early to mid-March.

Now available for pre-ordering, this spring’s Lilly Dress Magnets.  The magnets are $12.50 and will ship the first or second week of February.

PreppyPrincess.com

Sure to be popular (but not slated to ship until April), the new Croakies (Princess, do *not* use that name, it is trademarked) sunglass straps.

Lilly Pulitzer at PreppyPrincess.com

These are adjustable, reversible, and they can even go in the wash.

Lilly Pulitzer at PreppyPrincess.com

Patterns include Later Gator, Floaters, Bloomers and Desert Tort; these will be $8.50.

Always ideal for gifting, the new Picture Frames do not disappoint.

Lily Pulitzer Spring 2011

Available the first week in February, the frames come in Stuffed Shells (above), Buy Local Patch (below L), and Heritage Floral (below R).

Lilly Pulitzer Spring 2011

And the new Photo Albums look equally elegant.

"Do The Wave"

The Consort has been typing his little fingers to the bone getting things online, the new Lilly iPhone 3/4 and iPod Touch Cases are up and available for pre-ordering should that be appealing.

We move on to share a few quick hits in an effort to stay abreast of preppish things; today AOL’s ShelterPop shared news that it’s Not just for college dorms rooms, prep style is here to stay.Ahem.

More from the story:

“Being preppy is more than just a sartorial statement, it’s a way of life. However, you don’t have to join the country club to co-opt a preppy vibe for your home.”

There are a number of fun photos accompanying the piece, with rooms styled by designer Jack Levy, as well as this montage.

Targét has announced its next designer collaboration.

Calypso St. Barth via InStyle

InStyle reports the retailer is partnering with Calypso St. Barth for a limited-edition home and fashion collection launching May 1st.

“…the collection will include clothing and accessories for women and children, plus home goods like candles, pillows and glassware.”

This one seems perfectly timed for spring and summer.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also, word that faux-prep school alum Blake Lively is the new face of Chanel’s upcoming Mademoiselle handbag line.

WWD reported the much-rumored story today, the line launches this spring, Chanel Grand Pooh-bah Karl Lagerfeld will shoot the campaign himself.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Finally, reports are surfacing about a possible impediment to the planned sale of J. Crew.  From a Bloomberg story late today:

Sears Holdings Corp. and Urban Outfitters Inc. are weighing rival bids for clothing retailer J. Crew Group Inc. in a potential challenge to TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners LP’s $3 billion buyout, said three people with knowledge of the matter.”

It doesn’t take a stockologist to know this has all the makings of a sticky wicket, we can’t think of anyone who would be in favor of a Sears-J. Crew deal.  More from the Bloomberg story:

“Sears buying the clothing chain “would be great for Sears, but horrible for J. Crew,” said Christine Chen, a San Francisco-based analyst for Needham & Co. “J. Crew is positioned as aspirational and Sears is not. It would have a negative impact on the J. Crew brand.”

Princess readers won’t be surprised to read the interwebs are burning up with all manner of speculation and commentary.  From 24/7 Wall St.:

“What is interesting about Sears as a possible buyer is that it did make a similar acquisition in the past when it acquired Lands End, a catalog retail apparel company.

“The surprising company on the surface is Urban Outfitters Inc. It caters to a younger audience with its Urban Outfitters name-brand and it also has Anthropologie, Free People, and Terrain.”

For more on this developing story, Bloomberg’s coverage is here, and Wall St. 24/7 Wall St. is here.

With thanks for your kind patience as we muddle through the crazy daze! days. 🙂

Friday Fun of a Preppish Sort

Hello-Hello, happy (happyhappyhappy) Friday.

In the spirit of the weekend, we are going to enjoy some Friday Fun, beginning with Apartment Therapy’s look at Colorfully Preppy Rooms.  We love the way this room reminds one of striped grosgrain ribbon.

Domino via Apartment Therapy

From the story:

“Think crochet games, sailboat races, argyle sweaters, and Oxford shirts. Coordinated style with a crisp, refined edge — these are rooms that would do any Bunny or Chip proud!”

Desire to Inspire via Apartment Therapy

It is a fun read with lots to love, our favorite is the fifth room, “Reminiscent of a closet full of button-downs…”.

Apartment Therapy DC has another story we think readers will get a kick out of: The Color of Prep: Accessories in Pink, Green & Old Money

Writer Catrin Morris delves into just why pink and green are the colors associated with preps, and the way those colors are incorporated in home decor.  A group of home accessories is also featured, including that fabulous Cape Madras pillow above.

Apartment Therapy

We covet several items, including the madras plaid French Bull Salad Servers (pssst, they also come in pink) and the Thomas Paul Coaster set.

More from the story:

“Preppy homes are very traditional, old money affairs, full of antiques passed down from elite forefathers, faded oriental rugs, rustic and practical outdoorsy accessories. Sailing, camping and hunting motifs abound. Worn plaid throws rest upon faded leather Chesterfields. You get the picture.”

Also shown, Grosgrain Napkin Rings (we are lucky enough to have been given a set by a friend, they are wonderful) and some of our Lilly Pulitzer Melamine Plates.

We are more than flattered to be included in the story, and enjoy seeing a number of our virtual pals mentioned as well, Christian at Ivy Style, and Allie at Summer is a Verb.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It looks like Brooks Brothers is extending its social media plans to include Twitter.  We have previously mentioned the retailer’s Facebook presence; the company is using that Facebook page to help select the design for its upcoming Twitter page.

We turn to the Halloween weekend now, and begin with a member of the Anti-Prep contingent. We are fairly certain everyone would sleep better this evening if they only knew what ‘Snooki’ plans to wear.

Courtesy Image via WWD

As the sketch shows (?) it is a pickle-themed costume, we’re guessing perhaps there is a reason for this…Ms. Snooki likes pickles?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Moving on, if we had been anywhere near the city last weekend, we would have headed straight to Tompkins Square Park for the annual Halloween Dog Parade, where we would have seen this.

AFP/Getty

Not generally what one expects to see when combining pearls, fur and a Tiffany’s box. This next one could well be our favorite, Gracie the pug in her replica of Scarlett O’Hara’s legendary dress made from the family’s green velvet drapes.

Clearly Lady Gaga is going to be much-imitated this season.

Timothy A. Clary/AFP

Mabel’s stab at the meat costume brings a smile, as does a Pomeranian dressed as Zorro, seen at a Philippines fundraiser.

Reuters

Whenever we see photos of this kind we stop and marvel at just how much our four-legged family members tolerate, and their infinite patience.  To see more pictures from the Tompkins Square Parade, click here.

With apologies for stooping to the dogs in costume level (dopey Princess), we hope everyone enjoys a happy and safe Halloween weekend!

Nautical Gifts and Goodies any Preppy Will Love!

Ahoy mate!

It has been some time since we really grazed all of the goodies available with a nautical theme. It is time we do so again, don’t you think? We dedicate our post to Miss Kate, who is always so very Nautical by Nature.

From Kayce Hughes, the red anchor necklace at $40.

From Stella McCartney’s Resort 2008/2009 collection, the absolutely TDF earrings. TP lusts after these, and cannot await the time the Resort collection arrives.

.

If seeking goodies geared specifically to the holidays, the Caribbean Sea Life Ornament Set from Nautical Luxuries might wet your whistle.

.

Also from Nautical Luxuries, the Sailboat Needlepoint Baby Slippers that are miniature works of art. These are handmade, lined in kid leather, and sure to be the talk of the baby shower!

.

From Head Porter Plus, the elegance of the cotton handkerchief, although we could do without the extra logo-ing.

From another angle…

While planning what to pack for this winter’s Caribbean getaway, the Pegleg NYC tee for kids is a must.

Pegleg NYC

.

Naturally the same style in a Trident motif is also a favorite here at the Prepatorium; both are $52.

Pegleg NYC

.

Table linens with a nautical theme sometimes veer perilously close to “too cute” IOHO, (In Our Humble Opinion), a risk minimized with these.

The napkins are covered in elegant little anchors and they are 100% cotton, machine washable and best of all? They are reversible, so you get two looks for one price, $18.

.

One never have too much stationery, and it always makes a superb gift, especially when for the Young Miss or Master in your household. It helps get them started on the proper method for conveying a ‘Thank You,’ adding a touch of whimsy to the tortuous task.

Hope Notecards at PreppyPrincess.com

The ‘Hope Anchors‘ notecards in a red ticking stripe are an outstanding selection, as are the ‘At the Helm’ notecards. Both make an elegant style statement; they are $22 for a box of ten cards and eleven envelopes.

At the Helm at PreppyPrincess.com

.

The Brass Signal Flags Plaque might make a great gift for someone with a love for the sea; the Bowlines Pub Sign is on sale (*really* on sale), both at Nautical Supply Shop.

.

.

This one is similar to a tote The Princess carries: the Paul Smith Boat Plans Bucket hat at Saks.

.

Here is the aforementioned tote, The Hamptons bag at the Preppy Princess in both white and navy.

These are fabulous because they are so large 19″ x 13″ x 9″ wide, so there is more than enough room to carry all your goodies to the beach, or your groceries, perhaps toys to occupy the little ones while you are busy.

Best of all, these are constructed of a heavy, coated cotton canvas, so they are water-resistant. Not to worry about the spray from the water when on the boat. Below, a close-up showing the detail in the drawings and also a shot showing the generous size.

In our silly segment, here is a beach towel one might stow on board where no one will lay eyes upon it. Why? Perhaps the design, with that wretched crown up top, rather dreadful on its own merit, but the real reason one would tuck it away? You couldn’t bear having friends know you spent $260 on a towel for the boat.

A far more practical (and we are nothing if not practical here at the Prepatorium) treasure? The Anchor Repeat Foldover Notecard set by the brilliant designers at Boatman Geller. Personalization is included with this set of 25 notecards offered at $66,  and shipping is free.

In a recent post we showed jewelry by Erickson Beamon, the next jewelry designer to do a capsule collection at Target, and also favored by Michelle Obama.  Here is a little nautical treasure from the company, the Anchor Necklace, 4″ wide on a 32″ chain, so it is large. This can be yours for $258 at Blue Bee.

A few final items now, starting with the Old School placemats, $16 each, 2 for $30, or even better savings with a set of 4 running $55.  These are reversible, with the classic Lighthouse grosgrain ribbon on one side, and the definitive rep tie stripe on the other, they are also machine washable, you know we love these!

We leave you with a bit of nostalgia: a pair of vintage earrings worn by the Queen Mother, circa the 1970s.

We must fly, we are late for a luncheon. Do have splendid weekends, wherever you may be!

More Pink Rooms. (And we Mean *Really* Pink!)

Pink Room #2 Rug Company

Wow – slap us upside the head for having a lack of vision! When we did the post about the Preppy Pink Living Room for Sale back on March 26th we kind of thought that was the beginning and end of pink rooms with pink furnishings. We were wrong. Really, really wrong.

Pay a visit to Desire to Inspire’s collection of pink rooms and furnishings. Just because you can. But do pay a visit as it is a fab investment of time! Or because you want to see how much of a loon I am. But you must be sure to keep scrolling down their page to fully appreciate the scope of what has been accomplished in the world of pink. One of the rooms shown above is the creation of Ghislaine Viñas, an interior and architectural designer in NYC and if ever you wanted to see a preppy pink and green home page, here it is. Yowza! We feel positively dowdy by comparison over at PreppyPrincess.com! Another is the 2006 House & Garden Hamptons show home by Jay Jeffers, Jeffers Design Group in California. And if there are rooms and/or furnishings you think The Princess needs to be apprised of, do tell!
