Pink’s New Shirt, Talbots & Target Sneak Peeks

Hello-hello!

We are hyper-busy today, so we shall do some quick blog-bombs! (Essentially Headlines with a brief tidbit, and/or photos.)

There will be a new addition to this fall’s line of Thomas Pink shirts. This WWD story explains the upscale retailer’s announcement that it will offer a wrinkle-free shirt in its Men’s line.  An intriguing thought, although we are somewhat disconcerted, uncertain we wish to purchase ‘crease-resistant’ shirts for the Consort at Pink.

Speaking of TSU (The Spousal Unit), he was more-than-disappointed to learn one of his favorite haunts for apparel is struggling.  Mark Shale becomes another unfortunate SOTT (Sign of the Times), with word they are filing bankruptcy and plan to close stores in Kansas City, Atlanta, and Dallas. The 3 Chicago-area stores will be kept open as a buyer for them is sought; the outlet store closed on Monday.

When visiting Chicago it is not unusual for TSU to pop into the Michigan Avenue store; he is also fond of the Galleria location (Dallas).  The retailer has women’s apparel as well, with brands many readers will recognize for their exceptional quality and style. This is a shame, as Mark Shale runs an outstanding operation with customer service unmatched by 99.% of their counterparts.

Those who follow TP on Twitter may remember yesterday’s Tweet about Talbots’ boosting the age of its target customer; previously they were hoping to reach Women age 45 – 55/65, now it is 45 to 65+.  Yikes.

We wanted to share a few looks from Talbots’ fall line. (We don’t know if these styles fit with a marketing plan aimed at women 65+… your thoughts?)

The look in the picture above seems more suitable for the under-55 demo IOHO, while this next style easily transcends age.

The Women’s Wear Daily story describes some of the looks:

“Among some of the highlights of the fall collection, are cardigans with ruffles, bows and rosettes; printed scarves and waist sashes; sheath and lace evening dresses from $129 to $149…”

Here in the corner condo we are hopeful these photos do not represent the best of the fall fashions, as there is little that appealed to us.

We have an update on the eco-friendly Loomstate for Target Collection due in stores in time for Earth Day which is April 22.

Pieces in the collection will range in price from $14.99 through $44.99. The men’s collection will be in stores about a month longer than the women’s, but as with many of Target’s limited edition collections, pieces may go quickly.

That serves as a good reminder: the Thakoon for Target Collection is now drastically reduced. The clearance pricing includes things like tops at $4.24 and dresses at $13.99

For today’s Pretty in Pink we have several offerings, simply because we have absolutely no self-control in some areas. (We recognize that for most readers this is not new information.)

How about the Hello Kitty Polka Dots rain coat for kids?

Of course there is a matching Hello Kitty umbrella available, also at DLL Rainwear.

No need to be alarmed about finding something of this sort for your very own: the Pink Damask Raincoat for Women.

On that cheery note we say ‘bye, as we fly out the door!

More Preppy Sales: Banana Republic, LL Bean, Lacoste

Hello everyone, and happy new week!

The Princess must publicly thank La Bellette Rouge for providing us with a much-needed boost on a dull and dreary Monday morning: her Blog Love Award!

Merci Miss La Bellette Rouge

Merci Miss La Bellette Rouge!

Miss LBR is an extraordinary writer and we are ever-so-thankful for her recognition!

We move to updates on additional methods for acquiring necessities (or luxuries, however one deems them) without taking out a second mortgage on the summer home. (Translated: more sales.)

Banana Republic is now offering 40% markdowns on both their Men’s and Women’s merchandise. In menswear the basics abound: outerwear, sweaters, denim, etc., but they are so staid we can’t bring ourselves to showcase them. Instead we share something perilously close to not quite meeting TP’s stringent standards of decorum.  Yet desperate times require deperate measures; therefore we give you the Men’s Taxi cab Boxers in blue.

Much more fun while also qualifying for today’s Argyle Update (although not yet on sale), the Cashmere Argyle Socks.

.

Also offering markdowns (and really, who isn’t right now?), Lacoste, including the Libby Ballet Flat as well as the Women’s Espa 2.

lacostelibbyflat_lacosteespadille

LL Bean has a good number of items marked down from their original prices, including the Infants Fleece Coverall.

TP is especially fond of the little ears on the hood. In fact, TP is craving a little fleece jumpsuit all her own to snuggle into and snooze away the day. Sounds reasonable to us… how about you?

Does this not look delish and divine? We can only wish we were somewhere in the northeast; it is  Nantucket bay scallops time!

We didn’t think it possible to make this melt-in-your-mouth fabulosity sound, well, boring, but it seems The Journal may have accomplished just that feat in this article on the topic.  On the upside, they do include a source for ordering the delicacy to be shipped wherever one desires, within reason.  A caveat: the article mentions trying these these sushi-style (sounds so much better than ‘raw,’ don’t you think?), TP has no intent of ever doing so as they are too wonderful cooked. Tender doesn’t begin to describe them. Sigh.

… treasures valued at more than $125, leave a comment telling us one friend you are grateful for. That’s it! For more information on the Great Giveaway, just click here! Here are a few of the comments left thus far…

The always astute Miss Daisy at Legally Blonde Ambition says:

“Oooh. I’m thankful for my internet friend Katie at Overflowing Brain for listening to me rant & rave. Whew.”

 Elaine R writes:

“I am thankful for having my friend Linda in my life. We have stayed friends through growing up then marriages, children and sickness-my love for her is unconditional.”

And from someone who actually makes tech fun and understandable (how’s that for a combo?) here is part of the comment left by Miss Techyness:

“I am most thankful for my support network. This is not just one person- but a collection of people, experiences and feelings.

It’s being thankful for that person who asks if you want a cup of coffee with a smile when you’re having a crappy day at work.

It’s when your mom sends you a text message and signs it “love mom” even though you have explained to her that you already know it’s from her.

So, what I’m thankful for are all of these people and the things they do that keep me sane )

We close with a Pretty in Pink offering from the Land of Nod, the Color Block Rug in an almost preppy pink and green color scheme, although this is a tad pastel to qualify.

With that, we say goodbye until next time!

Brooks Brothers Black Fleece, Kate Spade & J.Crew Sales, Black Friday Ads Already!

What a bright and sunny day we are enjoying here at the prepatorium. It is just bliss.

Regular readers know of the continuing coverage (that’s an understatement) this column has dedicated to the Brooks Brothers Black Fleece Collection, and its designer, Thom Browne. There has been much speculation about the company opening a store dedicated to this part of the brand exclusively, and now the good folks over at The Life Vicarious shed a little light on the matter in a recent post:

Courtesy The Life Vicarious

Courtesy The Life Vicarious

Barely visible in the photo is the sign that says “Opening Fall 2008.” The blog also shares:

“… it only makes sense we check-in and follow-up on Black Fleece Bleecker Street. We’re pretty proud of our track record of not being wrong yet on breaking food and shopping news, but how long it takes for validation sometimes! We don’t know what’s going on inside here, but the first signs of life are finally showing and as we promised, they’re still predicting a fall opening.”

Since we are talking about Brooks Brothers, a reminder:

And since we are doing reminders, Lord and Taylor is doing their part to help shoppers out with their Friends and Family sale, underway today through Sunday.

And really, who can resist a Radley ‘Tear Away Mer‘ portrait handbag at L&T when it is on sale?

Not to be forgotten, Garnet Hill is also sharing some love, with their oh-so-snuggly Paintbrush Flannel sheets on sale….

As well as merchandise throughout the store with their October Sale.

The Kate SpadeFriends and Family’ sale gets underway today with 25% off everything in the store with the exception of merchandise already on sale. TP is beginning to feel like she suddenly has quite a lot of friends and family members.

The J. Crew Fall Sale continues…

Not be left out, Polo Ralph Lauren has added more items to their sale.

TP is always happy to see Saks in on the activity with their sale.

Also today, we continue helping to protect your pocketbook this holiday season; we thought it wise to share the news that the Black Friday website is up and active. The site acquires copies for ads that will run starting the day after Thanksgiving. In an online story about the site from Sign On San Diego, there is already information on the Ralph Lauren sale:

“A link on the BFAds site connects to Ralph Lauren’s site, where shoppers are invited to “join us after your Thanksgiving dinner” to get 20 percent off purchases of $150 or more at its outlet stores, most of which will open at the stroke of midnight.”

The story also notes:

“But the deals could come sooner than Black Friday.”

“According to BFAds, several retailers “have mentioned that they will be having competitively priced sales in the weeks before Black Friday. It looks like, once again, some of the best deals this year may be had before the doors even open on November 28th.”

In the Sydney Morning Herald this week a story a story in the Executive Style column posits that “Menswear is having an aristocratic moment,” according to reporter Rachel Wells.

“…classic menswear looks inspired by the English upper classes have flitted in and out of fashion. Of course, there are some sub-cultures – think of England’s Sloane Rangers and America’s preppy set – who have always looked to the aristocracy for fashion cues. And designers such as Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Paul Smith have built multibillion-dollar businesses on these classic looks.”

The article continues:

“After several seasons of skinny silhouettes, the return to aristocratic looks – complete with structured blazers, chunky knits, textured tweeds and wide-legged trousers that add bulk to the frame – comes as a somewhat seismic, not to mention, surprising, shift. Aristocratic style for the threadbare?”

An intriguing theory.

Next, everyone knows The Princess is more than obsessed interested in needlepoint. Doing it.  Looking at it.  Sitting on it and holding it. Therefore, we share news about an exquisite exhibition, Brigid Berlin, Needlepoint, now open at the John McWhinnie Gallery.  Many of the pillows in the show are from Ms. Berlin’s ‘Breaking News’ series.

Courtesy Photo

Courtesy Photo

Ms. Berlin was actually raised as quite the Prep.  As the brochure for the exhibit describes her background:

“Though raised in elite social circles, Berlin became a self-described “troublemaker” and spent most of her life reacting against, and sending up, the social conventions of her youth.  She met Andy Warhol in 1964 and was soon drawn into the downtown social set centered at the Factory. Berlin became a member of Warhol’s inner circle and a personal confidante.”

The show runs through November 22nd.

Back later!

Another Brilliant Ralph Lauren Move + Something Special for the Guys

Hello and aren’t we happy-happy-happy it is Friday? Anyone headed toward water this weekend? Finally off to the cottage for the rest of the summer? We hope so! And fie on those retailers touting Back to School and End of Summer Sales, not to mention the Sale to End All Sales plus the Our Sale is Better than Your Sale Sale!

Although… The Princess does recognize her role in perpetuating those very promotions somewhat with her continual harping about said sales. Please consider this our formal apology for past actions and a foreshadowing of future behavior. Because we *so* heart your pocketbook (that is how one says it, yes?) we will continue sharing that sale information.

We do have a thought from Polo Ralph Lauren for those desperate-for-an-activity-days Nanny often encounters whilst at the cottage with the children; we’ll get there in a minute. But first an update on the Polo Ralph Lauren Olympic Games Collection. If you’ll recall from our earlier post on this group, there was a tone of disappointment at the lack of merchandise for Girls. As expected, that situation has been rectified with several more items in the Girls Olympic Games Collection.

New to the line are the Olympic Games Fleece Pullover in white in Sizes 7-16;

along with the Olympic Games Ringer Tee in Sizes 2-6x;

and the Olympic Games Hoodie available in Sizes 2-6x and 7-14. Frankly, TP expects even more Girls merchandise before the end of the Games, but we could be wrong.

Now on to what The Princess referred to as a ‘brilliant move’ in the title to this post: the Ralph Lauren Paint Your Own Polo Kit. It’s best to go with the PLR description on this one:

Let your child express her individuality and style with our new Paint Your Own Polo. With a variety of paints, brushes and stamps, the mesh polo shirt inside our signature Ralph Lauren paint can truly become your child’s own.

Now, how smart is this? These are non-toxic paints, the shirt is going to be machine-washable, ultimately Mom and Dad are going to have a lovely memento of Bitsy and Drake’s budding artistic skills, and best of all, this one is for charity! All of the proceeds go to the Pink Pony Fund for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Pediatric Art Therapy Program. Of course there is also a kit for the young man in the family.

And since we seem to be covering all things Ralph Lauren today, a reminder that the Black Watch polo team Ralph Lauren sponsors plays this weekend at the opening of the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge Cup in Bridgehampton.

One more find before we dash – Espadrilles, etc.

One reason we love these folks is their broad selection for men. We think you will like their style.

Do have a splendid weekend.

Hickey Freeman Must-See Sale, Monique Lhuillier Sample Sale

Here at the Prepatorium we want to ensure we are covering the gamut of preppy apparel needs; it has been suggested we might be neglecting the needs of the young men and boys in the family when in comes to more formal or special occasions. Say no more. Now, you are familiar with the remarkable quality and service of Hickey Freeman; did you know their Spring Sale is underway? Major markdowns off original prices seem to be the order of the day.

The Princess understands the angst that can surround acquiring the appropriate suit for the young gentleman, especially if it is his first. We think the Boy’s Grey Donegal Suit is an outstanding choice at its regular price point; finding it at a cost reduced by 50% is what the younger generation calls ‘a screamin’ deal’ if we’re not mistaken. The suit was originally priced at $495 and is now $297. Quite the deal indeed.

The same applies to the handsome Boy’s Black Stripe Suit seen below, also originally $495 and now $297, an altogether elegant yet youthful look for the young man. Both are offered in Sizes 4-20 and both are 100% wool.

For more casual occasions, the Hickey-Freeman Boy’s Brown Multi Check Sportcoat (seen lower left) may fit the bill, previously priced at $350 and now available at $210. For a more upscale profile, the Boy’s Navy Cashmere Sportcoat works wonders; it was $595, and is now offered at $357. Again, both in Sizes 4-20.

Of course the young man requires something to go with his new jacket. Below left, the Boy’s Stone Trouser in 95% Cotton/5% Cashmere, or the Navy Corduroy Trouser, also available in Brown, 100% Cotton. Both were originally $135 and are now $81.

For a more casual approach, there is something The Princess really hadn’t quite seen before, the Boy’s Blue Camo Sportcoat, or the Grey Cotton Herringbone Sportcoat. Both for Sizes 4-20, both originally $350 and now $210.

There are multiple options to select from in Sale Dress Shirts,

as well as wonderful ties in fun and funky prints for the young man. These are offered in 44″ and 50″ lengths, are 100% silk, and are now $36, marked down from $60. Below we show the Boy’s Race Car Tie, appealing to a younger generation while also offering an appropriate alternative for more formal attire.

A less formal but no less appropriate option is the Boy’s Football Tie in green or navy.

The Princess has absolutely no self-control whatsoever when it comes to Men’s ties, and even maintains a collection of vintage men’s neckwear.

And finally, for Monique Lhuillier fans (isn’t everyone?), if you are anywhere near Southern California (Muffy Martini?), or if you can get yourself anywhere near there by 10am Sunday morning, toddle on over to the Monique Lhuillier Bridal and Ready to Wear sample sale. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to snag a few more of her divine designs, all at 40%-90% off retail. This is not at the Salon in Beverly Hills; have your driver transport you downtown to 1201 S. Grand Avenue, hopefully by 10am when they open, certainly long before 5pm when they close. Just remember, things are sold in ‘as is’ condition, and with prince points like these, all sales are final.

Polo Ralph Lauren Olympic Games Children’s Collection, Martha Stewart at Wal-Mart

The Princess promised in a previous post about the Polo Ralph Lauren Olympic Games Collection that she would alert you when the Children’s merchandise arrived. It is now available on the Ralph Lauren site.

Well, let us be a bit more precise in our description: there are 11 pieces shown in the Boys Section of the Olympic Games Collection, but this breaks down to only 6 different items, if The Princess did the math correctly. (An unlikely occurrence, we recommend counting yourself if this trivial piece of information is at all important.) This is a result of the same items being listed repeatedly for as many different size classifications as that particular piece comes in; for example, the Olympic Games Logo Polo is offered in Infants, Boys 2-7 and Boys 8-20.

There is one piece available as of this writing in the Girls area; that is the Olympic Games Stripe Polo available for Girls 7-16 (in Small, Medium, Large & XL) and Girls 2-6x. It is shown below and described as a “Preppy short-sleeved polo shirt in breathable stretch cotton mesh, mercerized for added luster.” The Princess is confident in her belief that the good folks at Polo Ralph Lauren have much more Girls merchandise coming for this collection. (There is an identical Olympic Games Stripe Polo for boys available as well.)

On the Boys side, we show a great pair of cotton twill shorts for Boys 2-7, officially called the Olympic Games Short and lower right, the Olympic Games Big Pony Polo. Should you fancy other colors, you’re in luck as the shirt also comes in red and white.

Probably the most detailed piece in the Boys Collection at this point is the Olympic Games Sweatshirt, available in white or red. This is currently available in Boys 2T-7; below we show the red version.

Here is the Boys’ Olympic Games Logo Polo, available in white, green and red.

The Princess fully expects a significant amount of goods to be added to the Children’s Collection in the next several weeks. This group is far too important to the company to allow the Boys and Girls clothing group to be anything less than robust. Whilst the Adult segments provide more to the bottom line, there is also an image component to this equation.

One other note on the Polo Olympic Games group: some pieces are also available on the USOC’s USA Olympic Shop online. When we see additions to the Boys and Girls groups we’ll let you know.

It’s All About The Nails

Chanel once again proves to The Princess how techno-hip it really is with a free collection of online wallpaper for your computer that is extremely stylish.

These are the $25 Limited Edition colors created to promote the company’s recently opened boutique on oh-so-trendy North Robertson Blvd. in Los Angeles. The colors have been given names synonymous with a few of LA’s nicer traits: LA Sunset, Melrose and Rodeo Drive.

A few more sale updates, beginning with Sak’s, where the price points on some items reflect some very deep discounts.

The summer sale at Ann Taylor is also getting well under way with additional markdowns.

And finally this evening, word that Martha Stewart Crafts are going to be sold at Wal-Mart stores; some merchandise will be available within the month. This is apparently an effort to replace K-Mart, where the line is now sold, with another low-price retailer. The collection will be made by EK Success, a name familiar to most scrapbookers. The Princess is unclear how the executives at Michaels craft stores are feeling about all this, as they also carry Martha Stewart crafts.

The Upscale Preppy Sale Tale (Bean, Brooks, Marie-Chantal, Kate Spade, Boden)

Earlier today we absolutely had to race flying out the door, but promised there were so many silly sales going on at retailers that we would pop back in and highlight just a few we were aware of… like LL Bean for heaven’s sake! When trying to pick up some of those little gifts and goodies for the cottage sometimes I forget how easy it can be to simply check out LL Bean’s website, especially when they have some things at 40% and 50% off their original price.

Long ago it became evident here at the Prepatorium that The Princess Consort could go through dress shirts at a pretty good clip. Yes I know, of course it is the tailor, the cleaners, the household staff, the Invisible Man… the result however, remains the same and *does* present a challenge. Not only does Charles Tyrwhitt make a fine dress shirt, they also understand one’s desire to economize without sacrificing quality or the impeccable service for which they are known.

Below left, their Julian Navy Mini-Check Spread Collar Classic Dress Shirt normally retailing at a respectable $110, now selling at a most economical $45. On the right a Tyrwhitt Women’s Black & Pink Multi Stripe Dress shirt with their fabulous stretch built right in to the fabric. These are oh-so-wonderful ladies, trust TP on this one!

Tyrwhitt also has polo shirts (ideal for Logophobics like you-know-who), suits, separates for men and women, and great cashmere as well. Investigating their sale prices on these items could prove worth the investment of time depending upon your needs.

Marie-Chantal is a delightful line by Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, who coincidentally, just gave birth to her fifth child with her husband Prince Pavlos last month. The collection for newborns and children is carried by upscale boutiques around the world, as well as six company stores; the seventh opens this fall in Beverly Hills. Below we show the Baby Girl Dress and Bloomers in a purple Liberty print for Sizes 3 Months-24 Months (originally $132, now $66). In the middle, the Pascal Boys Basic Button Down Shirt (now $52.50 from $105) and the Peers White Denim Pant (at $54 from $108). To see a listing of stores in the States carrying this exquisite line, click here.

The good folks at BodenUSA are on board with the economizing while still acquiring plan.

They understand one’s children continue growing, one’s own size inexplicably changes regardless of one’s efforts to guide it in one direction or the other, things do not seem to wear as well as they did in The Princess’s day, no, this is not about conspicuous consumption for most, is it? Indeed not. And because so many are in search of something new for the office, here is Boden’s Long Printed Cotton Skirt, available in three different colors and patterns. Also shown, Boden’s outstanding Milano Knitted Jacket, available in three solid colors, originally $124, now $49.

Of course Brooks Brothers doesn’t disappoint… especially if the gentleman of the house is able to take his eye off the tee for just a moment and allow himself the luxury, nay, the necessity of fast-forwarding six months in an effort to determine just how much longer his existing winter wardrobe of sport coats shall retain their… well, let’s just call it their ‘holiday charm.’ In other words, if he, or the individual responsible for selecting his attire for the family’s annual New Year’s Open House and other holiday gatherings could consider Brooks’ offerings from Christmas Past, as it were, and as shown below, the cost-effectiveness of such a plan could well outweigh any imagined blow to one’s ego for purchasing last season’s style… excuse us just one moment – this is Brooks Brothers! And the primary characteristics distinguishing “last season’s style” Brooks’ plaid wool sport coat from any other “season” are…? Of course. (BTW, we don’t need to broadcast this, but in our circle, ‘buying ahead’ was often considered a wise method for stretching those trust fund dollars.)

To that end, we show the Red Brodie Plaid Wool Sport Coat on the left, originally priced at $498, currently $199 and with a decent range of sizes remaining. The same philosophical reasoning is applied to our presentation of another past season (but soon to be present season) jacket, in this instance we show the Wool and Cashmere Blazer in red at $259, originally $648.

Of course they have loads for the Ladies as well, including a sizable number of dress shirts, like the Three-Quarter Sleeve Fitted Stretch Solid Herringbone Shirt that we’re showing in pink, also available in blue and white, on sale at $39.75 from $79.50. Some Boys’ merchandise also reflects a savings opportunity, like this great Classic Argyle Half-Zip Sweater originally $79.50, now at $39.75.

Before we say ta’ for the night we must quickly take a peek at a few Kate Spade treasures. On the lower left, the Emily shoe is simply *so* Princess it’s amazing it’s not currently in the shoe closet. In every possible combination. This beauty originally sold at $275 and is now priced at $138. On the lower right, the Dandy Classic moccasin that was $225, reduced to $113.

If you need a bag of any kind and you need to economize a bit, you are in luck. If it’s a handbag, diaper bag, tote, clutch, there is a substantial selection at reduced prices. We’ll try to show more when we have a bit more time, but we’ll leave you with the Angaaga Island Janna, now only $239, reduced from $465.

Happy hunting, and may you find super savings!
