More Preppy Sales: Banana Republic, LL Bean, Lacoste

Hello everyone, and happy new week!

The Princess must publicly thank La Bellette Rouge for providing us with a much-needed boost on a dull and dreary Monday morning: her Blog Love Award!

Merci Miss La Bellette Rouge

Merci Miss La Bellette Rouge!

Miss LBR is an extraordinary writer and we are ever-so-thankful for her recognition!

We move to updates on additional methods for acquiring necessities (or luxuries, however one deems them) without taking out a second mortgage on the summer home. (Translated: more sales.)

Banana Republic is now offering 40% markdowns on both their Men’s and Women’s merchandise. In menswear the basics abound: outerwear, sweaters, denim, etc., but they are so staid we can’t bring ourselves to showcase them. Instead we share something perilously close to not quite meeting TP’s stringent standards of decorum.  Yet desperate times require deperate measures; therefore we give you the Men’s Taxi cab Boxers in blue.

Much more fun while also qualifying for today’s Argyle Update (although not yet on sale), the Cashmere Argyle Socks.

.

Also offering markdowns (and really, who isn’t right now?), Lacoste, including the Libby Ballet Flat as well as the Women’s Espa 2.

lacostelibbyflat_lacosteespadille

LL Bean has a good number of items marked down from their original prices, including the Infants Fleece Coverall.

TP is especially fond of the little ears on the hood. In fact, TP is craving a little fleece jumpsuit all her own to snuggle into and snooze away the day. Sounds reasonable to us… how about you?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Does this not look delish and divine? We can only wish we were somewhere in the northeast; it is  Nantucket bay scallops time!

We didn’t think it possible to make this melt-in-your-mouth fabulosity sound, well, boring, but it seems The Journal may have accomplished just that feat in this article on the topic.  On the upside, they do include a source for ordering the delicacy to be shipped wherever one desires, within reason.  A caveat: the article mentions trying these these sushi-style (sounds so much better than ‘raw,’ don’t you think?), TP has no intent of ever doing so as they are too wonderful cooked. Tender doesn’t begin to describe them. Sigh.

… treasures valued at more than $125, leave a comment telling us one friend you are grateful for. That’s it! For more information on the Great Giveaway, just click here! Here are a few of the comments left thus far…

The always astute Miss Daisy at Legally Blonde Ambition says:

“Oooh. I’m thankful for my internet friend Katie at Overflowing Brain for listening to me rant & rave. Whew.”

 Elaine R writes:

“I am thankful for having my friend Linda in my life. We have stayed friends through growing up then marriages,children and sickness-my love for her is unconditional.”

And from someone who actually makes tech fun and understandable (how’s that for a combo?) here is part of the comment left by Miss Techyness:

“I am most thankful for my support network. This is not just one person- but a collection of people, experiences and feelings.

It’s being thankful for that person who asks if you want a cup of coffee with a smile when you’re having a crappy day at work.

It’s when your mom sends you a text message and signs it “love mom” even though you have explained to her that you already know it’s from her.

So, what I’m thankful for are all of these people and the things they do that keep me sane )

We close with a Pretty in Pink offering from the Land of Nod, the Color Block Rug in an almost preppy pink and green color scheme, although this is a tad pastel to qualify.

With that, we say goodbye until next time!

Return of the Prep School Look … Again. Ralph Lauren Kids Opens

Hello-Hello and Happy Day!

In anticipation of The Big Vote (now officially dubbed TBV here at the Prepatorium) we share the following fashionably patriotic accessories, compliments of today’s WWD.

The style statements are from a variety of designers, including:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And believe it or not, the headline on the post is correct; it would seem that the Preppy or Prep School look has returned. Again.

This time it is compliments of our neighbors to the north, more specifically in an article entitled “Return of Prep School Look” from the Regina Leader-Post. One apparel line mentioned in the story is Canada’s Jacob Connexion.

“The attitude behind Connexion for fall ’08 is casual with a certain level of chic, a very put-together, yet worldly preppy feel,” said Jacob creative director Karen Pornillos. “It is Parisian ‘bon chic, bon genre’ with a tad of East Coast Ivy League flavour.”

The Ivy-league style blazer is seen below.

Jacob Connexion

Here are a few more looks from the company’s fall line:

The story also says “…navy blazers, kilts, and knee-highs” have been spotted lately, and “…not just on the posh Upper East Siders on TV’s Gossip Girl….”

“The prep-school look, once reserved solely for uniforms and naughty Halloween costumes, has become the trend for fall among both students and young professionals, as crests, bows, and ruffles take over mannequins and store racks at retailers across the country.”

The following illustration accompanies the story:

The Jacob Connexion line is spun off from the Jacob Collection, offering several more looks we find appealing. Very appealing.

In keeping with the style under discussion here, word today from the good folks at Racked that the Ralph Lauren Children’s store is now open on Bleecker Street.

This is the store that previously carried the Women’s Collections.

A quick update on the J. Crew cardigan mentioned in our previous post about Michelle Obama wearing J. Crew fashions on the Leno Show: the sweater surfaced over the weekend at a rally in Columbus, Ohio.

Our argyle updates wouldn’t be complete without a few treasures we fell over online, including the Paul Frank Argyle 3-pack.

And from the CrewMutts collection at J. Crew, the Argyle dog sweater in lambswool.  A reminder, this is one of those items available only by catalog and online.

BTW, does anyone know the reasoning for the Crewmutts merchandise falling into the Women’s section on the website?  It is merely curiosity that prompts the query.

In closing, today’s Pretty in Pink comes to us via LL Bean.  Below, Bean shows a creative use of a preppy standard, grosgrain ribbon. In this case the retailer uses it to adorn their Maine Isle Slipper.

.

That is it for today. A reminder in the best Chicago tradition, “Vote Early and Vote Often!” We are thinking many of our fabulous Chicago bloggers (Momx2, Lipstick at the Mailbox, Third Coast Preppy, Tres Poshe Preppy and more!) recognize this saying!

The Olympic It Bag, Shoshanna, Ralph Lauren Rugby Update, Sale Updates: J. Crew, Saks, Barneys, Boden

Hello-hello and happy Wednesday!

Because we have dabbled in the Olympic Fashion world for a few days, we thought it best to step away from the Olympic uniforms and look at some of the additional items being marketed as tie-ins to the Beijing Summer Games. We finally came across some photographs of a bag we’ve been reading about for some time; the PUMA Olympic “It bag.”

Might we also add that hunting up the PUMA bags for this column was an eye-opening experience, albeit a tad mind-warping. As we don’t generally spend time blazing new fashion trails, we had *no* idea that the selection of bags PUMA offers is so broad! Heavens to Betsy! Below, the PUMA Olympic Ring Bag.

Below are bags that also won recognition in this year’s CSM (Central St. Martin) Design competition sponsored by PUMA, including the Medallion Bag designed by George Omerod in either Gold or Silver, as well as the CSM Elastic Ring Bag. The Princess applauds PUMA for supporting young, independent designers, but is somehow not in sync with the medallion bags. At all.

If you would like to read and see more on Olympic fashions and design, Forbes Life has an interesting story and along with one of their wonderful slide shows.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many readers are familiar with The Princess’s disdain for inappropriate emotional displays, yet they have been witness to her inability to contain herself upon seeing the madras plaid swim separates by Shoshanna. It was dreadful, we were absolutely gaga and completely out of control, incapable of containing ourselves. (Below, the ever-so-preppy madras swim top at Nordstrom.)

In reality, there is little from this designer that we don’t like, as her lines are simple, the cut is classic and the end result is always one that is sure to flatter every figure. In many ways it is a ‘preppy’ design aesthetic.

To the right of the swimsuit above, the Mosaic Belted Dress at Saks in a bright and brilliant shade of blue. (A quick FYI if you are still looking for swimwear, all of the Shoshanna swimwear separates are on sale at ShopBop, and there is an additional 20% off the sale prices.)

If you like Shoshanna’s designs you’ll want to pop over to Ronda Carman’s fabulous blog, “All the Best” for her profile of designer Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss (below).

Learn which handbag she carries the most, her favorite luxury in life and who her style icons are, plus you can become acquainted with the blog, a daily read for us here at the Prepatorium.

We also adore the Shoshanna Tuxedo Halter Dress at Nordstrom, with its cutaway top and pleated waist, and simply love the Stretch Jersey Cap Sleeve dress at Bluefly, despite the fuzzy-wuzzy photo.

Scoot over to Ronda’s when you have a minute to get a peek at the person behind the Shoshanna designs and meet Ronda, well worth the trip itself!

Natick Rugby Store

Natick Rugby Store

An update on last week’s post mentioning the upgrades being done to the Ralph Lauren Rugby website, including the added enhancement of being able to shop online at the site. The site is now open for business and you can actually shop the Rugby styles online!

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Once again TP feels compelled to tiptoe around the issue of m****, a topic you know that we never discuss, certainly not in a public forum such as this. However, there are times when economics mandate that one does what they can to pinch a penny or two along the way to livin’ the Prepalicious! lifel And TP is here to help, forever seeking measures and means to keep your pocketbook healthy and happy. (You know what a horrid chore it can be when you are forced to call up one of the Trustees and detail your plight.)

It is in this vein we always suggest the ‘Buy Ahead’ method for supplementing one’s wardrobe, acquiring pieces now that will be simply divine in the future. You know the basic boys button-down at Hickey-Freeman that is on sale now is ideal for this fall and winter, and no one knows what season it is because it’s a classic item made with superb materials and craftsmanship. Or the vibrant (that is an understatement) plaid sportcoat Thurston will wear to this fall’s holiday ‘do,’ similar to this Holiday Plaid Style on sale at Hickey Freeman.

Hickey Freeman Men's Holiday Plaid Sportcoat (on sale)

Hickey Freeman Men's Holiday Plaid Sportcoat

And don’t forget the edgier Hickey store, with goods aimed toward a younger and hipper clientele than those at parent store Hickey Freeman. They too have some fabulous men’s merchandise at outstanding price points, especially since they added ‘Take an Additional 20% off” to the deal. We are particularly fond of this Linen/Cotton Blend Chambray Shirt, a basic that will last forever. We are, of course, completely and totally ignoring those shameful buttons (gasp!) and the little leaf logo.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Naturally there are loads of treasures at the J. Crew Final Sale that are simply perfect for everyone, but do be sure to check the markdowns on everything.

For example, the Cambridge cable crewneck sweater, a ‘must have’ basic available in loads of colors normally runs $74. It is now $69.50, not much of a markdown.

We are pretty excited about the Men’s Broken-in Madras Sneakers, now only $19.99, still available in a good range of sizes in both the Tidal Blue or the Montauk Patchwork.

Even getting the little ones properly clad for school can be accomplished in some cases at this sale! Probably not in the school days category, but still fabulous: these Callie Flats for the little princess in the family.

There is always the GIrls’ Polished Cotton Polo at $6.99, with lots of colors to choose from, or maybe the Girls’ Cashmere Argyle Cardigan, doesn’t that look elegant, yet über-snuggly for the Little Miss?

For the young master, how can you go wrong with a silk Lighthouse Tie that was $29.50, now $7.99, or the East Hampton polo shirt?

BTW, we’re just tickled that *finally* the New J. Crew store opened at the Galleria in Dallas. Only one store in a town that size was just silly.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

One wouldn’t want to pass up the Summer Sale at their local Saks, or the online store with all manner of things marked down, including this Stephen Dweck Bronze Ring. There are other treasures like the classic St. John Sport Boatneck Stripe Sweater in a timeless wool and rayon knit you will wear for years (not shown). The Princess is also partial to the Ann Demeulemeester Suede Sneakers in black.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

At Boden things are not discounted anywhere near the amounts shown above, but the there are savings to be had just the same, if you enjoy the company’s casual classics.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Now don’t forget to stop by Barney’s Sale online, unless you’re in the city in which case it would be criminal to not get yourself to the physical warehouse sale. Already underway in LA, the online sale features deep markdowns and runs through the 26th, while the warehouse sale has even better markdowns, and you get the experience of someone ripping that top you were just looking at right out of your hands! The physical warehouse sale goes through the 1st of September.

And on that crazy note, the Princess will toddle off for a nightcap and some Olympics viewing!

Thom Browne’s White House Eyebrow Raiser, Preppy Bobby Jones 75% Off!, J. Crew ‘Final’ Sale & Free Shipping Code

It’s no secret to most readers The Princess struggles with Black Fleece designer Thom Browne’s hemlines, in particular the high-water-line pants. Especially said pants. To help you understand our lack of understanding, below we show a look from Browne’s 2008 Black Fleece for Brooks Brothers line.

However, Brooks is pleased enough with Mr. Browne and the Black Fleece line (to which he is a major contributor) that they are expanding it and giving it a stand-alone shop. But TP isn’t the only one not in sync with the higher hemlines, as evidenced by the crowd at Monday’s White House gathering honoring American Design, hosted by First Lady Laura Bush.

Thom Browne, a two-time Fashion finalist, was honored just to be at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. “It’s always nice coming to the White House,” he said. Browne’s signature high-water pants drew more than a few curious glances, including those from several military guards.

Many have noted the trend toward shorter hemlines for men, including the Wall Street Journal. Like The Princess, The Journal is not exactly out in front of fashion trends, but they do pay attention, as shown by their recent online article by Ray A. Smith, “A Short Story: The Rise of Floods,” examining the hemline phenomenon. Fun reading for everyone that also fleshes out Mr. Browne’s philosophy, oddly not worlds apart from ours it seems.

One stop that is truly a must if you are still seeking a few pieces to fill out your summertime wardrobe is the sale event at the Bobby Jones Clubhouse Collection. At prices even The Princess found to be remarkable, this is just what the Wardrobe Doctor ordered to round out the summer selections you face every time you walk into the walk-in. Even if you simply want to scan the upscale items at bargain price points rarely encountered on this particular line, it is worth the time investment on your part.

Since we have been showcasing argyle, let’s look at the Bobby Jones Argyle Zip Front Sweater, available in this creamy colorway as well as a navy that just radiates understated elegance. This is available in a broad range of sizes, unusual for a piece that originally retailed at $265 and is now only $66.

Another basic at a price point that seems to be screaming “Buy me…buy me!” is the Solid Pique Classic Polo, shown below in ‘Reef’ but also available in ‘Calypso’ and ‘Key Lime.’ This classic is now only $26, down from $105.

The Grosgrain Trimmed Sport Cardigan is not a clearance item, so it is ‘only 50% off’ the original price and now $125, a classic embellished with our favorite ribbon.

Naturally the Preppy Plaid Skinny Pant (now $56, originally $225) would fit right in for a quick drink at the Club after a round with friends. If something fresh is needed to wear while actually playing that round of golf, the Preppy Plaid Skort at just $48 is a deal that one just can’t ignore!

Pair either with the Fleur-De-Lis 3-Button Polo in either the navy shown or red, now $23 (buy both at that price!); it appears to be available in a wide range of sizes. Now you know The Princess will be partial to the sunny Patchwork Printed Skort, and at $75 (from $150) it’s a bright and vibrant piece our walk-in wants!

And finally, the Society Cable V Neck Sweater is an item we just can’t seem to pass up, especially with the variety of colors offered! Our love of sweaters is rapidly hitting a point that could alarm The Princess Consort, always indulgent but now simply mystified by the “sweater thing.” Sigh.

When stopping by Bobby Jones, don’t forget to look at the Men‘s Sale, replete with equally remarkable prices, especially on some of their cashmere pieces.

Also, a little note in our Inbox reminded us it is time for J. Crew’s “Final sale”. At least until the Final-Final Sale… or whatnot. And remember, to receive Free Shipping on orders of $100 or more, enter the code SHOPNOW at checkout. As always, The Princess is trying to do her best for your pocketbook. 🙂

What cuter pair of shorts for your little girl than the Crittermania chino bermuda in either white or aquamarine? Originally $42, now $19.99 and just darling in our feeble-minded opinion.

Of course, she knows there’s one thing she must do: accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. That is easy to accomplish with the ever-so-classic Print Headband at $5.99, accenting her preppy Argyle Sweater just perfectly.

Of course there are pages upon pages of treats and treasures for the young man of the house, for Daddy and for Mommy, including one of TP’s alltime favorite shoes, the Jack Purcell Patchwork Sneakers (for Mom).

There’s no better note to leave things on than Jack Purcell, so we’ll just say ‘Bye until tomorrow, and happy hunting!

Lacoste ‘Summertime Prep’ Now on Sale & Dust-up over Bridgehampton Polo Matches

If there is one line from Lacoste The Princess has absolutely adored since first viewing, it is the Summertime Prep collection, very light and fun while still incorporating some argyle! Better yet, some pieces in the collection are even marked down to a more favorable price point.

Below we show the Cotton Argyle Vest in a color palette that we love, and the Flat Front Seersucker Short.

Also very high on our favorites list, the Madras Plaid Cotton Short happens to be on sale (originally $120, now $71.99), and it comes in two colorways, the pair shown below left and a darker navy plaid. And then a wonderful piece that tells a little secret about TP: we actually purchase these men’s sweaters for ourselves as they are lush, plush, and ever-so-snuggly against your skin! We’re fawning over the Supima V-Neck Cotton Sweater, available in a delightful array of colors including a soft and gentle pink; this color against your skin is faboo – flattering any face it frames. (This item is also on sale, originally $140 and now $84.99!)

Of course, we suggest you toddle on over to the Lacoste site and take a glance at the goodies yourself, as the selection on the men’s side is quite good, not to mention all of the women’s pieces, especially those on sale.

On a different note, there seems to be quite the dust-up brewing over the real dust created by the ponies in this weekend’s polo matches in Bridgehampton. Two homeowners with property adjacent to the Bridgehampton Polo Club complained at a recent hearing regarding the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge Cup, starting this weekend. They weren’t quite as neighborly as one might hope, complaining about the noise, traffic and dust levels created during the matches at a hearing July 8 before the Southampton Town Board. The Challenge Cup begins this Saturday (the 19th) and runs every Saturday through August 23rd.

During last year’s matches there were no noise or traffic complaints. Alex Rodan, president of the Club said “We will be good neighbors,” while speaking at the hearing, promising to dampen the ground in an effort to control the dust. A final vote on the issue is scheduled for this Friday.

If you would like to attend in a somewhat posh setting as these things go, why not bid on a pair of tickets to the VIP tent? The auction for the tickets benefits charity and you’re sure to be safe from most of the elements. Of course no one is 100% safe from the much-discussed dust kicked up by the ponies; to borrow a popular phrase and mangle it, “Dust Happens” at these events.

The Upscale Preppy Sale Tale (Bean, Brooks, Marie-Chantal, Kate Spade, Boden)

Earlier today we absolutely had to race flying out the door, but promised there were so many silly sales going on at retailers that we would pop back in and highlight just a few we were aware of… like LL Bean for heaven’s sake! When trying to pick up some of those little gifts and goodies for the cottage sometimes I forget how easy it can be to simply check out LL Bean’s website, especially when they have some things at 40% and 50% off their original price.

Long ago it became evident here at the Prepatorium that The Princess Consort could go through dress shirts at a pretty good clip. Yes I know, of course it is the tailor, the cleaners, the household staff, the Invisible Man… the result however, remains the same and *does* present a challenge. Not only does Charles Tyrwhitt make a fine dress shirt, they also understand one’s desire to economize without sacrificing quality or the impeccable service for which they are known.

Below left, their Julian Navy Mini-Check Spread Collar Classic Dress Shirt normally retailing at a respectable $110, now selling at a most economical $45. On the right a Tyrwhitt Women’s Black & Pink Multi Stripe Dress shirt with their fabulous stretch built right in to the fabric. These are oh-so-wonderful ladies, trust TP on this one!

Tyrwhitt also has polo shirts (ideal for Logophobics like you-know-who), suits, separates for men and women, and great cashmere as well. Investigating their sale prices on these items could prove worth the investment of time depending upon your needs.

Marie-Chantal is a delightful line by Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, who coincidentally, just gave birth to her fifth child with her husband Prince Pavlos last month. The collection for newborns and children is carried by upscale boutiques around the world, as well as six company stores; the seventh opens this fall in Beverly Hills. Below we show the Baby Girl Dress and Bloomers in a purple Liberty print for Sizes 3 Months-24 Months (originally $132, now $66). In the middle, the Pascal Boys Basic Button Down Shirt (now $52.50 from $105) and the Peers White Denim Pant (at $54 from $108). To see a listing of stores in the States carrying this exquisite line, click here.

The good folks at BodenUSA are on board with the economizing while still acquiring plan.

They understand one’s children continue growing, one’s own size inexplicably changes regardless of one’s efforts to guide it in one direction or the other, things do not seem to wear as well as they did in The Princess’s day, no, this is not about conspicuous consumption for most, is it? Indeed not. And because so many are in search of something new for the office, here is Boden’s Long Printed Cotton Skirt, available in three different colors and patterns. Also shown, Boden’s outstanding Milano Knitted Jacket, available in three solid colors, originally $124, now $49.

Of course Brooks Brothers doesn’t disappoint… especially if the gentleman of the house is able to take his eye off the tee for just a moment and allow himself the luxury, nay, the necessity of fast-forwarding six months in an effort to determine just how much longer his existing winter wardrobe of sport coats shall retain their… well, let’s just call it their ‘holiday charm.’ In other words, if he, or the individual responsible for selecting his attire for the family’s annual New Year’s Open House and other holiday gatherings could consider Brooks’ offerings from Christmas Past, as it were, and as shown below, the cost-effectiveness of such a plan could well outweigh any imagined blow to one’s ego for purchasing last season’s style… excuse us just one moment – this is Brooks Brothers! And the primary characteristics distinguishing “last season’s style” Brooks’ plaid wool sport coat from any other “season” are…? Of course. (BTW, we don’t need to broadcast this, but in our circle, ‘buying ahead’ was often considered a wise method for stretching those trust fund dollars.)

To that end, we show the Red Brodie Plaid Wool Sport Coat on the left, originally priced at $498, currently $199 and with a decent range of sizes remaining. The same philosophical reasoning is applied to our presentation of another past season (but soon to be present season) jacket, in this instance we show the Wool and Cashmere Blazer in red at $259, originally $648.

Of course they have loads for the Ladies as well, including a sizable number of dress shirts, like the Three-Quarter Sleeve Fitted Stretch Solid Herringbone Shirt that we’re showing in pink, also available in blue and white, on sale at $39.75 from $79.50. Some Boys’ merchandise also reflects a savings opportunity, like this great Classic Argyle Half-Zip Sweater originally $79.50, now at $39.75.

Before we say ta’ for the night we must quickly take a peek at a few Kate Spade treasures. On the lower left, the Emily shoe is simply *so* Princess it’s amazing it’s not currently in the shoe closet. In every possible combination. This beauty originally sold at $275 and is now priced at $138. On the lower right, the Dandy Classic moccasin that was $225, reduced to $113.

If you need a bag of any kind and you need to economize a bit, you are in luck. If it’s a handbag, diaper bag, tote, clutch, there is a substantial selection at reduced prices. We’ll try to show more when we have a bit more time, but we’ll leave you with the Angaaga Island Janna, now only $239, reduced from $465.

Happy hunting, and may you find super savings!
