Lilly Pulitzer Fall 2010 & Target’s Next Designer

Hello-Hello, we hope you are enjoying a happy, summery day, it is simply glorious here at the Prepatorium.

Today we are all adither, scurrying about with TMTDTLT (too-much-to-do-too-little-time!), so once again, with apologies, we resort to more fluff than stuff.

Let’s start with an upbeat topic, the Lilly Pulitzer Fall 2010 Collection. We always enjoy seeing new styles and designs, and in this case, the addition of an entirely new category for the company.

There are some lovely dresses, the Adalie Wrap Dress on the left looks fun, as does the Sophia Dress with its ruched trim at the hemline and neck.

Two dresses offering classic silhouettes, the Finn shift (L), and the Juliana (R).

The Anamaria Silk Twill Skirt is a little busy for us, certainly darling on the right person.

We’re lukewarm on some pieces; the Brinkley Shirtdress is a good example of this sentiment. The dress is likely a garment better appreciated in person, when paired with the right sweater or jacket it might be perfect office attire.

We do like the Coeli Skirt, available in two corduroy prints.

The Jonah Dress in Don’t be Koi is striking, we always get the biggest kick out of seeing Lilly apparel and accessories patterns reinterpreted for use in goods that we carry here at The Princess, like the Agenda Books in Koi; the pattern can also be seen in the Little Jonah dress.

Also fun for Minnies this fall, the Juniper Jumper with Ruffles (L) and the Little Lilly Shift, we show it in Multi Apple a Day Patch.

There is new fleece for your little one, including the Becca Half-Zip Jacket (actually available now at Splash of Pink), and the Chelsea Fleece Vest, we show it in the delightful Daiquiri Pink.

Fall brings leggings for little girls as well, including the Hotty Pink (L) and About Them Apples in Lifeguard Green.

There are new sweaters for grown-up girls, on the left we show the Alcott Argyle Cardigan, and on the right, the Paley Cardigan Striped version for fall, both available at Splash of Pink, both in that navy and pink palette that we love.

Also new this fall, the much-anticipated Activewear group, the first such pieces from Lilly. Below left we see one of the ensembles, and on the right, the Frances fleece top.

The Lotus Top at Splash of Pink comes in both a solid color and a print version, the latter definitely qualifying as a Pretty in Pink item.

The Orlando Sentinel has more on this group:

“Produced in Nike factories, the collection includes capri and full-length pants, tank tops, fleeces and sweaters made of nylon-Lycra performance interlock fabric and rayon-spandex jersey.”

An additional view.

We like the Frances Fleece Top in the printed version, there is also a full-zipper Fleece Jacket in a slim cut.

We really are hooked on the pink and navy color combination.

It’s also time for the Tess Turtleneck in Navy, or the Irving Fleece Pullover

Clearly lots to love in this fall’s collection, and we’ve only shown a scintilla of all the goodness!

Do you know what we want to wear with that fabulous pink and navy color combo?  This.

Regular readers will recognize the style statement; it is from our friend Kiel James Patrick’s new line of Sailing Belts, just launched on Monday.  We are excited to be hosting a contest giving a lucky winner the belt of their choice from Kiel.

Kiel James Patrick

Do pop over and enter, you could be the proud new owner of one of these little slices of fabulosity. And be sure to look at all of the wonderful Croffix Sailing belts at Kiel’s store.

A few quick Bits and Bytes:

  • The next Target design collaboration involves Justin Timberlake; his William Rast clothing line is partnering with the retailer on a new collection. The collection hits most Target stores and Target.com on Dec. 19. Below, two looks from William Rast.

Courtesy William Rast via Thread

  • The line has a rocker/biker edge, and most industry insiders expect to see a good amount of denim in this group.
  • In other collaboration deals, there is word of two new nail polish collections tied to popular televisions shows. Expect a Mad Men collection of polishes, and below, the Gossip Girl Nail Polish line.

  • And with word of one more collaborative undertaking, the Brooks Brothers Levi’s jeans have debuted. These are for men only, three pair are offered online and in-store.

We leave you with two SOTTs (Signs of the Times), the first involving our friends at Brooks Brothers again.

Courtesy Brooks Brothers

The venerable retailer is promoting its presence on Facebook, we have been fans for some time now, thoroughly enjoying the content. (If heading that way, do stop in and say ‘hello’ at the Princess page!)

Our other SOTT concerns the AntiPrep known as Snooki.

Brendan McDermid/Reuters

She, and other cast members from a STCBN (Show That Can’t Be Named) rang the opening bell Tuesday morning. At the Stock Exchange. In New York. The actual, real New York Stock Exchange.

Clearly, the apocalypse is upon us.  The horror.

Heh, heh, heh.

The Princess Has a New Hero

Hello-Hello and happy Thursday!

Things here in the Corner Condo are crazy-busy, so our post is once again more fluff than stuff (translation: more photos than prose).

We start with a look at today’s story in the Times about a classic prep item, the needlepoint belt. “Belts That Spare Muffy the Heartbreak” is a delightful read; it begins with a bit of background on the phenomenon for those not as familiar with the topic.

“THEY used to call it the breakup belt. Women (and it has always been women) of a certain sort and class historically committed themselves to memorializing the bonds of a relationship by stitching a needlepoint belt for the Loved One.”

The focus of the story is Smathers & Branson, below we show a sampling of belts from the firm.

We simply adore the treatment Guy Trebay gives the topic, especially this sentence:

“…despite the sartorial horrors visited on us lately under the guise of a preppy revival,

Thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. Trebay, you are definitely our new hero at the Prepatorium.  Frequent readers know of the incessant whining and caterwauling occasional concerns shared in this space about the merchandise passing for prep these days, and “sartorial horrors” is a perfect description.  Back to your story:

“… needlepoint belts are jaunty and casual but also so clearly handmade that they achieve an offhand formality equally suitable for wear with shorts or a summer suit. Anyway, the best ones do.”

We are fond of almost every style, but especially like the Islander, the Dark ‘n Stormy, as well as the Elephants with Martinis.

The company also offers a collegiate series.

Back to Mr. Trebay’s story, and his explanation for focusing on Smathers & Branson.

“Other labels were there already: J. McLaughlin, Vineyard Vines and the neo-preppy Tucker Blair all offer their own ranges of hand-stitched needlepoint products. But unlike the competition, Smathers & Branson both indulges the preppy clichés (burgees and Labrador retrievers) and takes a sly wink at them.”

The cummerbund, ample evidence of that wink.

We recommend reading the story in full, our synopsis really can’t do it justice.

A story in today’s Post provides a clue on today’s other topic of note: “Why We Love Don Draper“. SPOILER ALERT: Do NOT click on the link if you don’t want to know about Sunday’s episode!

Below we see Don actor Jon Hamm at Tuesday night’s premiere of Mad Men Season 4 in Los Angeles.

Mario Anzuoni/Reuters

Although the new season doesn’t debut to the public until Sunday night, a select few were on hand for Tuesday’s event, including Mr. Hamm’s costars Elizabeth Moss (L) and Christina Hendricks.

Mario Anzuoni/Reuters

We aren’t going to mention any names, but some friends are even counting down until the show is on the air.

Courtesy of the Divine Miss ATS&P

Perhaps the most catching image is that of little Sally Draper at Tuesday’s sneak peek.

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty

Actress Kiernan Shipka looks so different from last season!

Back to that story in the Post:

“So, what’s his appeal? Simple. Don Draper represents, in his repressed way, everything we’re either not supposed to do or are even allowed to do anymore.

He smokes fantastic amounts at work, in restaurants, at home and in the car with his kids.

He drinks at lunch, at work, at home and before getting into his car. He’d rather have sex than babysit.

His favorite food group is steer.”

Hmmm, it probably is a sensible theory. We aren’t exactly into all the analysis about why we watch, we just watch, proof positive that behind the moat and drawbridge, we’re just a couple of simpletons lolling about the Palace! (Heh, heh, heh.)

We leave you with a Sales & Savings opportunity.

Another Royal Wedding on Tap and National Pink Day

Hello-Hello, and Happy National Pink Day!

This is perfect timing, coinciding nicely with the big news of the day for royal watchers: word that Monaco’s Prince Albert is engaged to Charlene Wittstock of South Africa.  Below, the official photograph released by the Palace accompanying the announcement.

Amedeo M.Turello/Palais Princier Monaco via Getty

The official announcement may be viewed here.  Ms. Wittstock is a former Olympic swimmer from South Africa; from the news release:

“Ms Charlene Lynette Wittstock is of South African nationality and was born on 25 January 1978 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Before settling in Monaco, Charlene Lynette Wittstock was a youth worker.”

We saw many photos of the couple over the weekend in our posts on the Swedish royal wedding of Princess Victoria. Here are two more pictures from this weekend’s festivities.

We are sure no one will care about this silly bauble, but we’ll include the photo of Ms. Wittstock’s engagement ring anyway. (Heh-heh-heh.)

Amedeo M.Turello/Palais Princier Monaco via Getty

Today’s happy news lets us segue properly into our primary topic, a celebration of our favorite color here at the Prepatorium. We begin with an image of the famed royal residence.

In the photo above the Palace in Monaco appears rather more pink than it actually is, but a lovely sight nonetheless.  Other pink structures we stumbled across include this rental home not far from the white cliffs of Dover in the UK.

Many are familiar with the Royal Sheraton in Hawaii.

“Viennese art group Gelatin designed the giant soft toy and say it was “knitted by dozens of grannies out of pink wool”.

From another angle.

Back to the HisNibs post:

Group member Wolfgang Gantner said: “It’s supposed to make you feel small, like Gulliver. You walk around it and you can’t help but smile. And Gelatin members say the bunny is not just for walking around – they are expecting hikers to climb its 20 foot sides and relax on its belly.

The giant rabbit is expected to remain on the mountain side until 2025.”

Wimbledon 2010: Polo Ralph Lauren & Tiffany Diamonds by the Yard

Hello-Hello, and Happy Tuesday!

We missed you yesterday, but the volume of inquiries about the wedding of Sweden’s Princess Victoria made us think it would be wise to leave up our Saturday post detailing the party frocks, heads of state in attendance, etc. But we are back today, and a good thing, as it is high party and sporting season.

Everyone knows Wimbledon is under way, and that means lots of activities on and off the court. We begin with some images from the official Pre-Party this past Saturday, on the left we see Venus Williams; sister Serena Williams may be seen on the right.

Celebrities (we use that word loosely) were also on hand, including the Sugababes singing group. (Do help TP out here, are we hopelessly out of touch to be unfamiliar with this group?)

Claire Greenway/Getty

Two more athletes in attendance, Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic.

As many readers know, there is always another party this time of year, the Polo Ralph Lauren annual Wimbledon celebration.

Dave M. Benett/Getty

This year’s event was at the firm’s Bond Street store. Party-goers included Gwyneth Paltrow  and actor Matt LeBlanc, the latter wearing Ralph Lauren.

More atmosphere at the party venue, the PRL store in London.

Below, Jules Knight, Stephen Bowman, Oliver Baines and Humphrey Berney of Blake (we confess to looking this one up on Google, they all are in what is referred to as a ‘boy band’) on the blue carpet.

Dave M. Benett/Getty

Also attending the festivities, former Champion Boris Becker and his wife, Lily, seen below.

We thought Venus Williams looked elegant, and adore the pink/green necktie the gentleman on the right is sporting.

The event was a fundraiser for a British breast cancer organization, Too Many Women.

Mr. Becker’s connection with Polo Ralph Lauren can be seen in this ad showcasing the Wimbledon Ball Boys and Girls, all clad in Ralph Lauren designs.

Courtesy Image via AP

This is the fourth year Mr. Lauren has designed the uniforms, although they are basically unchanged from last year. More on this topic tomorrow.

This year’s Wimbledon on-court fashion updates are many and varied, below we see Serena Williams in her new Nike look.

Toby Melville/Reuters

Maria Sharapova also wears a new style, also with a jacket over the dress, and also from Nike.

Suzanne Plunkett/Reuters

For more updates and information about the on-court fashions, pop over and visit Rich at Down The Line Tennis, as always, he is a much better source on the topic than we.  The most we can add is evidence that it is hot over at Centre Court.

Yes, it looks very warm indeed.

Getty Images

Of course the uppermost image is a shirtless Roger Federer, the second is Rafael Nadal.

And our final fashion note comes via a Tiffany new release regarding the earrings Maria Sharapova will be wearing during Wimbledon. Some may recall the tennis star and Tiffany have a marketing agreement; she wears and publicizes a specific pair of Tiffany earrings during each Grand Slam event.

‘Fleece’ by Brooks Brothers Sneak Peek

Hello-Hello, and Happy Monday!

With things crazy-busy here at The Princess, we jump right in with an early look at the new Brooks Brothers line for young ladies, Fleece.

Courtesy Brooks Brothers

These images were posted this weekend on the new Brooks Brothers Facebook page.

Courtesy Brooks Brothers

The new line is slated to launch in time for back-to-school shopping.

Courtesy Brooks Brothers

The Brooks Brothers Facebook page also shows this fall’s styles for the young master of the house, just click here to see the upcoming fashions; below we show the logo for the new line.

Courtesy Brooks Brothers

According to the Brooks FB page, information about a private Fleece Trunk Show for FB fans will be announced on their FB Wall (for those unfamiliar with Facebook, this is rather like one’s home page, for lack of a better term).  Our hats are off to the design team at B2, for the most part we think the girls collection looks promising.

While the majority of the Fleece styles for young men are also impressive, we have a moderate concern about this:

Courtesy Brooks Brothers

As many readers are more than tired of hearing aware, our LogoPhobia can be triggered by something like the item seen above, and in the case of Brooks Brothers, we are off the grid a bit sensitive to the topic, borderline hysterical concerned that logos on sweatshirts are merely the first step on a slippery slope. A slope that this company has judiciously avoided in most respects.

Saturday brought us our monthly issue of WSJ magazine, always a fun read. This issue was particularly enjoyable for any preppish reader, beginning with the cover story, “The Church of Mickey Drexler, Inside the world of J. Crew’s evangelical CEO“.

Courtesy WSJ Magazine

Tina Gaudoin’s profile is enlightening, and while we are not terribly fond of many Crew fashion decisions, we cannot fault Mr. Drexler’s business acumen.

Another interesting piece in this issue, an interview with designer Thom Browne.

Jeff Riedel/WSJ Magazine

Mr. Browne is perhaps best known to Princess readers as the designer of Brooks Brothers’ Black Fleece collections, as well as the man pushing higher hemlines. For men.

Finally, WSJ takes a fast glance at tote bags, commenting that “Preppy goes paisley and punchy with this summer’s take on the traditional tote.”

Nigel Cox/WSJ Magazine

We want to mention another children’s line, this one from Princess favorite, J. McLaughlin.

J. McLaughlin

We like a number of the dresses for girls, along with other offerings in the limited edition collection.

Here is one of the day’s Pretty in Pink offerings, Marilyn Monroe in her iconic Gentlemen Prefer Blondes dress.

The famous gown was sold at auction this weekend for a staggering $309,000.

For another Pretty in Pink that is also an Adventure in Argyle, we bring you this image via the always-on-top-of-things Erin at Pink and Green Scene.

Makeup in a Magic Wand? Also, Pets in the Dorm

Hello-Hello, welcome to a wacky Thursday here at the Prepatorium!

Scads of newsy tidbits abound today, we begin with one of them, word that Thom Browne will be adding a women’s collection to his eponymous line.  The designer is seen below at Monday’s CFDA gala, covered in this post.

Steve Eichner/WWD

While many Princess readers know of Mr. Browne’s Black Fleece collections for Brooks Brothers, they may not be as familiar with his own line of apparel and accessories. Women’s Wear Daily reported about the new line today:

“The designer, known for shaking up American men’s wear with his shrunken suits and avant-garde runway shows, sold a majority stake of his company to Japan’s Cross Company last year, and the partners are keen to sensibly extend the brand.”

Below, looks from a previous runway show of Mr.Browne’s.

The designer does create more commercially appealing merchandise, below we show several current Black Fleece styles.

We look forward to seeing the new collection.

Next, an absorbing story in today’s Times about summer house shares in the Hamptons.  Sarah Maslin Nir’s story begins by explaining what many already know:

“IN popular vacation spots like Fire Island and the Hamptons, the summer share is a time-honored tradition of weekend debauchery. The Long Island iced teas or mojitos downed on Friday evening typically kick off an alcohol-fueled series of events, and the drinking ends only when the various housemates hop a train or jitney back to Manhattan — with a hangover that stretches to nearly midweek.”

The story offers interesting insight into how one manages to enjoy the summer traditions minus the alcohol and other drugs.

We have news sure to make many fans of Glee happy, there will soon be Glee-related books.

Little, Brown via Zap2It.com

Glee: The Beginning is a ‘prequel,’ with events taking place before the show’s era. The books are aimed at the young adult audience, a series of five is planned. The first novel is due out in August, and it will include a double-sided poster.  Amazon is already taking pre-orders.

Also in today’s Times, the paper’s Skin Deep column looks at “Makeup to Help Flaws Disappear“, a gem from Catherine Saint Louis.

Tony Cenicola/The New York Times

The story looks at the use of new techniques for applying cosmetics, particularly foundation, beginning with the Temtpu airbrush system.

“Sort of like a gun that blows a mist of foundation, it promised to make my skin flawless. According to its manufacturer, it had made the faces of the “Stepford Wives” look porcelain smooth (if creepily perfect) in the 2004 remake, and it routinely makes movie stars and television anchors ready for high-definition close-ups.”

Ms. Saint Louis also tests other recent innovations, like the L’Oréal Paris True Match Roller (L) and the Lancôme Ôscillation Powerfoundation (R).

Here is a portion of her reaction to L’Oréal’s product:

“With the L’Oréal Paris True Match Roller, I felt as if I was trying to use a flat paint roller on uneven walls.”

The story is very well done; to read it in its entirety, click here.  Ms. Saint Louis has a companion piece, “Tips for Applying Foundation” that is worth one’s time if interested in the topic.

Remaining with the cosmetics topic, yours truly was recently contacted and asked to test/review two complimentary products from Cover Girl, the new Smoky ShadowBlast (L) and ShineBlast Lip Gloss.

Perhaps we’re cosmetically-challenged, but we really struggled with the eye shadow. It was difficult to apply, in part because there is not a lot of pigment, or color, in the stick.  Once applied the shadow did not last long, creasing was evident in less than an hour. (We used a Lauder shadow primer.) Our test sample was the ‘Silver Sky’ combination, and while we very much liked the colors in this combination, they appeared darker and richer in the product than they are in reality. Judging from online reviews we are not alone in our reaction to this product.

The company describes the ShineBlast lip gloss this way:

“Light reflecting shimmer layered under a high-gloss finish gives you 4x more noticeable shine*.”

We can’t tell you if it is 1x or 5x more shiny and can’t imagine anyone paying attention to such a precise claim. We can say the gloss went on easily and the applicator is nicely defined for more accurate application. It is *very* shiny, and the taste/scent were not offensive, lasting several hours. In summation, we can recommend the gloss for those seeking über-shiny lips, but we can’t say the same for the shadows. (We note our material connection to the product, as free samples were sent to us, click here for more.)

We leave you with one last tidbit from the Times, a story pointed out to us by The Queen Mother; with apologies to our Facebook Fans, we offer “Colleges Extend Welcome Mat to Students’ Pets“.

Dilip Vishwanat for The New York Times

The photo above shows Elena Christian and her Chihuahua, Annabelle. In her dorm room. At Stephens College. Where TP matriculated.

Here is another Stephens student, Allison Frisch, and her dog, Taffy.

Dilip Vishwanat for The New York Times

From the story:

“With these efforts, Stephens is hoping to smooth the transition of some students who may be so anxious about leaving home or adjusting to college life that a stuffed animal will not be of sufficient comfort. They want the real thing.”

Target’s Next Designer, Party Pix & “Preppy Meets Parisian”

THIS JUST IN: The next designer collaboration for Le Boutique Targét will be with British bag maker Mulberry, a Princess favorite. Below we show several bags from this season’s Mulberry lookbook.

Courtesy Mulberry

Women’s Wear Daily reports the collection will launch October 10. Most recently Mulberry has partnered with Apple on a collection of accessories; below, the Daria Mini Messenger for iPhone, one of today’s Pretty in Pink items.

This particular partnership probably has us more excited than any preceding today’s news, it shall be fun to see how the line looks come this fall. If interested in learning more about Mulberry, the Daily Mail ran a good backgrounder over the weekend.

We have scads of party pictures to share (among other things) from last night’s big do, the CFDA Awards. For those in the business, this is one of the première functions on one’s social calendar. Below we see designer Tory Burch and Polo Ralph Lauren’s David Lauren in photos from Steve Eichner at WWD.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America awards honor a variety of disciplines; below we see Caroline Kennedy presented an award to Vogue fashion director Tonne Goodman. Diane von Furstenburg and Carolina Herrera looked elegant, as always.

Also on hand, Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick and Alexa Chung. Do you think Mr. Westwick is trying to look fierce in the second image?

Another Gossip Girl talent attended Brook Shields appears to like Paper magazine’s Kim Hastreiter’s OMG necklace. (We do adore this publication, online and off.) Another Gossip Girl talent was in attendance, Michelle Trachtenberg.

We loved the Rachel Roy styles seen on both the designer herself (L), and model Hilary Rhoda.

Deidre Schoo for the NY TImes

We know some readers are fond of reality star Whitney Port; she was wearing David Meister.

Deidre Schoo for the NY Times

As is often the case, Thom Browne (of Brooks Brothers’ Black Fleece fame) dressed to impress.

Steve Eichner/WWD

The winner of this most popular designer was once again Ralph Lauren.

In other party news, Brooks Brothers has been hosting fêtes in select stores as part of its launch for the Social Primer Bow Tie collection we previously chatted about here. Imagine our delight at seeing that two of our Mad Men faves were at last week’s party in Beverly Hills!

via Huffington Post

Harry and Joan Rich Sommer and Christina Hendricks were at the celebration, Mr. Sommer looking dapper in a bow tie. We can hardly wait for the show’s return this summer. July 25 to be precise. Not that we’re counting down the days to Season 4, nay-nay, not us. (Heh-heh-heh.)

Another Mad Men actress is busy, January Jones is the spokesperson for advocacy group Oceana’s work on saving sharks, and today is World Oceans Day.

A timely issue, to be sure.

Finally in our little off-screen wrap-up for the M2 cast, Don Draper co-star Jon Hamm has also been busy away from the Mad Men, below he is seen at Saturday’s taping of the “Guys Choice Awards” with Bradley Cooper.

Christopher Polk/Getty

Samuel L. Jackson and Duane Johnson (who? never mind, The Consort advises us Mr. Johnson is a former professional wrestler) took part in the Awards, presented by Spike TV.

Kevin Winter/Getty

Leonard DiCaprio and Ben Affleck were also on stage.

From what we can glean in these photos, the actual award is rather distinctive.

It appears to be a set of antlers.

Kevin Winter/Getty

On behalf of Preppy 101 we want to share another shot of Mr. Hamm, this one with his antlers.

Chris Pizzello/AP

(Pssst, not that an elegant and refined southern lady like Preppy 101 would ever watch anything containing moments of crass commercialism and vulgar ostentation, but just in case you know of  someone who might be interested in such a display, the awards start at 10pm June 20th, on Spike.  Just in case.)

In an effort to offer our cherished readers coverage carrying some shred or thread of a connection to things with a preppy theme, we offer the following from Front Row View’s coverage of Jason Wu’s 2011 Resort Collection.

via Front Row Fashion

The story is titled Preppy Meets Parisian,” here is some of Pamela Kingston’s story:

“…resort collection, shown at the St. Regis hotel, New York managed to perfectly fuse contemporary preppy garments with romantic Parisian glamour. Straw hats and strong tailoring added the preppy edge to floaty, shift dresses with dark feathered abstract print featuring all over.”
