“Preppy Like No Other Magazine”

Hello-Hello, happy Wednesday!

Today we are more-than-a-little crazed and dazed from our day job at the Princess, all of the goings-on are lovely, but also time consuming!

So we jump in with a few things from around the globe, beginning with a look at J. Crew in the Times (of London).

“It is a label selling well-designed, fashionable — although never slavishly so — clothes for men and women. “

We always enjoy seeing other perspectives on American brands, and the Times story doesn’t disappoint; the piece was prompted by news that Crew is going to be available internationally beginning in May, via Net-a-Porter. More from the story:

“Even though it shares an unfortunate belief with a number of Americans that adopting initials adds a lustrous patina of heritage to a name, J.Crew is not in the same room as KFC…”

To read the story in its entirety just click here.

Next, an item from the fabulous Australian-based Girl with a Satchel blog, a look at the April fashion magazines. We thought readers might enjoy this portion referencing Tatler:

Tatler does traditional preppy like no other magazine, as demonstrated by “Sports Day”. Shot by Ruven Afanador at a male boarding school, the styling is all straw boaters by Lock & Co, white tennis dresses tennis dresses by Bottega Venetta and Jil Sander and wool cardigans from the Polo Ralph Lauren Wimbledon Collection.”

We are going to look for the issue next time we’re visiting our local newsstand.

In today’s Collaboration Update (yes, we gave up and added a category for this sort of thing) we share news that Liberty and Manolo Blahnik are pairing up for a collection.

Women’s Wear Daily reports the collection is slated for September:

“So Blahnik will design a range of items — such as scarves, candles, shoehorns, Wellington boots and notebooks — using Liberty prints.”

The designer has also created a Liberty print of his own.

We have an addition to our inexplicable and sporadic coverage of those Gossip Girls kids landing magazine covers.

Cream Magazine

Above we see Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Taylor Momsen and Ed Westwick featured on the April cover of Australian pop-culture magazine Cream.  Penn Badgley, Jessica Szohr and Chace Crawford are included in the photo spread.

For one of today’s Pretty in Pink (and Green) we offer this fun find, the Dinosaur and Heart Crust Cutters. to take the crust off bread, creating something really appetizing for your little ones.

These were pointed out to us by the bright minds over at one of our faves, the Pink & Green Scene.

We also offer a little something that looks simply cute as can be, the Spring Romance Mini Potted Fabric Plants.

We found these on etsy from seller Jane Joss, aka the “Fabric Florist.

Until next time, we hope there is pink and green goodness in your life!

Polo Ralph Lauren Wimbledon Collection, New J. Crew Accessories Shop

Hello-Hello everyone!

Did you know it is Milan Fashion Week? As in menswear and accessories for Spring/Summer 2010. While the temptation is to generally flip the ‘ignore’ switch, there are times we stumble upon fascinating newsbites and/or styles emanating from the event.

Guess who showed up for the Giorgio Armani show?

Yes, one of the Gossip Guys, Chace Crawford.  (This probably means he wasn’t watching NYC Prep.)

Gossip Girl fans awaiting the release of the show’s second season on DVD now have a date: August 18.

Suggested retail for Gossip Girl: The Complete Second Season is $59.98, but it may be pre-ordered now at Amazon for $38.99.

Speaking of idle gossip that serves no purpose whatsoever Mr. Crawford, WWD has an interesting story on what magazine covers are selling the best, more specifically the People Hottest Bachelor cover discussed in this space yesterday…

…featuring Kate Gosselin of that hideous the Jon & Kate Plus 8 show; we admit ignorance here as neither TP or The Consort have viewed so much as one frame of video from this show.  (We do have a major ‘Help us Understand‘ question related to Ms. Gosselin’s hair style…? Is there some fundamental fact or background story we have missed on this topic?)

It may come as a surprise to learn this is not a pulication with which we are familiar; we are told one may see copies of the magazine when in line at the market.  Indeed.

To get to the point, apparently Mr. Crawford isn’t exactly the hottest-selling cover for People, especially when contrasted with the misfortunes of the Gosselin family.

“Editors at competing celebrity magazines questioned whether the 23-year-old television star was recognizable enough for People’s audience, or if they should have gone with a bigger name. Past “Bachelors” include Matthew McConaughey in 2007 and “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks in 2006. Both issues sold 1.6 million copies each.”

We’ll quickly share an item that is what we generally refer to as ‘a little stale,’ meaning it is recent, but not anything of the “this just in” ilk.  (Although how frequently do we really encounter ‘breaking preppy news,” really, who are we kidding?)

At any rate, preppy retailer J. Crew has just opened their first accessories store in SoHo.

Described as a standalone shop, the store actually leads right into the J. Crew women’s store. Crew CEO Mickey Drexler describes the new store’s customers to Women’s Wear Daily in this story:

“It’s the same customers shopping the designer stores.” They’re looking to spend less for products with style and of similar quality, he added.

Those spending time in the Hamptons will be pleased to know the retailer’s plans include an accessories shop-within-a-shop for its East Hampton store.

We have been chatting about Wimbledon fashions as recently as this post yesterday, and almost forgot the Polo Ralph Lauren involvement with this event!

Ralph Lauren Official Wimbledon Line Available, J Crew Globe-Trotter Centenary Luggage Now Available

Remember these lovelies? Now you may purchase some versions to add to your walk-in wardrobe.

Ralph Lauren Wimbledon Sketches

Of course we are talking about the official Polo Ralph Lauren Wimbledon Collection, and it would seem there are two primary vendors, the designer’s own selected stores or website, and the venerable AELTC’s Centre Court shop at Wimbledon or their official online shopping page.

AELTC Polo Ralph Lauren Collection

And the collection is, as one would expect, very Polo-ish, and that is simply superb. We are very fond of many of the looks, particularly the Wimbledon Ball Girl Scooter (skirt) seen lower right.

Not to mention what we would consider, at least from all appearances, the major snuggle factor of the Wimbledon Fleece Track Jacket and matching pants in navy.

Of course there is a new Wimbledon polo shirt, in both white and navy cotton mesh, this one complete with the “Big Pony” logo and the Official Wimbledon patch or badge or seal….we’re not quite sure what to call this… but we do know it is located on the sleeve.

One word of warning on the polo: in the pictures it almost appears to have a very wide banded bottom, as opposed to the standard bottom on polo shirts, so you may want to double-check this, lest you be disappointed. Mr. Lauren and the good folks at the All England Lawn and Tennis Club have not forgotten the men in our lives, and TP won’t either. To whit, the Wimbledon Cricket Cap in Newport Navy, also available in Women’s, and the Men’s Wimbledon Twill Short.

Back to the issue of why we mention two different primary vendors: because the Wimbledon site has a few things the Polo RL site does not. There is a snazzy tee shirt, a polo shirt with a chest stripe, a crested version of the polo shirt, a khaki version of the cap, and perhaps a few more items we missed.

Now if you are looking for one of those marvelous blazers worn by the ballboys and girls, you are out of luck. But you knew this, right?

If you didn’t know this and need to drown your sorrows in a caloric indulgence of catastrophic proportion that is somehow tennis related, we can help. Truly. (And you thought I made this stuff up.) The Princess suggests you have Cook purchase an extra pint or two of the “Official Limited Edition Haagen Dazs Raspberries & Meringue Ice Cream” (honestly), and when everyone is g-o-n-e for the night, indulge. And really, why bother with a bowl? It delays the delivery of the diabetic coma inducing material to the mouth and it is simply another dish ultimately requiring more energy in the dishwasher that ought not be wasted, don’t you think?

Should you still be feeling out of sorts and needing a bit more of an in-touch and in-person experience, we suggest you get yourself over to Saks (on 5th, in the city) this Saturday for their Breakfast At Wimbledon event. They will be more than happy to serve you champagne and strawberries while you browse their Ralph Lauren Wimbledon Collections and they are even having a drawing for tickets to the US Open. So there.

Also now available: the oh-so-eagerly-anticipated J. Crew Globe-Trotter Centenary Luggage Collection. (Or has this been available for much longer and yours truly is simply now aware of the fact?) Many may recognize the Globe-Trotter brand, especially if you’ve had traveling parents, grandparents, etc., spent much time in the UK (where the fab brand is made) or been a Conran’s shopper. Below we show the J. Crew complete set in its exclusive color combination, which we are reminded is a limited edition, along with the J. Crew 13″ vanity. Just beneath that is the Conran version of same.

And as we seem to be doing all things British this evening, let us close with something most uniquely British, Ascot. If you are attending this week and still uncertain on precisely what is and what is not acceptable, perhaps it’s best to spend a few minutes here brushing up on appropriate attire and accessories. Didn’t get the memo with your invitation? Try this page for a little guidance. (Are you sure you supposed to be there? Who did your hat?)
