World Cup Fever Hits the Prepatorium

Hello-Hello, welcome to a wacky and somewhat frenzied Friday!  Does everyone have World Cup Fever?

It seems to be everywhere today, from Trafalgar Square…

And small.

There are fashion statements.

With accessories and cosmetics that are anything but run of the mill.

The style statements are not limited to the ladies.

Nor does one’s age impact choices for fashionable headwear.

Here is a woman who has pulled it all together: chapeaux, makeup and accessories.

We have celebrities, like Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley at Havaianas launch party for their FIFA Team Flip-flops.

And we have royalty. Below, Prince Albert of Monaco, and South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock, arrive before today’s match between South Africa and Mexico.

The opening concert celebration featured Shakira and Alicia Keys.

As well as John Legend and the Black Eyed Peas.

This flag conveys the overall message pretty well.

As does this big screen at the concert.

But this is what we would really like guarding the grounds here at the Palace.

We just need to put him in a different uniform.

Happy weekend!

Ultimate Fashion Gala, & A Sneak Peek at the Preppy Laptop

Hello-Hello, we hope the sun is shining as brightly in your corner of the globe as it is here!

We begin with an apology to those not fond of fashion-laden posts, we must beg your indulgence one more day, as we have yet to share the images from another big do. The Met Ball was Monday night, arguably the season’s most important event for seeing, and being seen, in serious formalwear. (The official name for the event: the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala.) The evening also officially kicked off the Museum’s special exhibit, American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity.

For decades the Gala has been overseen by Anna Wintour.

Via The Cut

The Vogue magazine editor was in an ensemble by Chanel Couture; some found it less than attractive, but we actually liked the look, and thought it was flattering on Ms. Wintour.

Two of the evening’s most elegant looks: Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad.

Kristin Somody Whalen/WWD

And Marion Cotillard in glittering Christian Dior.

Kristin Somody Whalen/WWD

They are both wearing what we refer to as “SPFs,” Serious Party Frock.  The editors at Refinery 29 came up with this group of “Best Dressed” ladies at the Gala.

Via Refinery 29

From the left, Zoe Saldana in Calvin Klein, Kate Bosworth wears Valentino, Rosie Huntington (apparently a popular model) in Burberry and Emma Watson, also in Burberry.

The event is A List only; below we see Lauren Bush and David Lauren, on the right, Ricky and Ralph Lauren.

In an unusual twist, we thought the younger generation’s styles were superior to those seen on their elders; the blue jeans looked horribly inappropriate.  Below left we show Dylan Lauren, and on the right, Tommy Hilfiger and his wife, Dee Ocleppo.

Taylor Swift was in Ralph Lauren Collection, and Tory Burch in Tory Burch.

From the Gossip Girl contingent, Blake Lively wears Marchesa and Jessica Szohr in Versace.

Leighton Meester and Penn Badgley were also on hand.

The Cut had an intriguing tidbit in their post about the G2 stars and the event:

“… all the relationship drama has made the cast of Gossip Girl skittish around reporters, because Penn Badgley, Jessica Szohr, and Blake Lively each didn’t so much as turn their heads as they hustled up the stairs, surrounded by flacks, and went inside.

And how did Ms. Lively look for the after-party? Below left we see the more casual look she sported, and on the right, co-stars Penn Badgley and Chace Crawford at that function.

We were not crazy about Ivanka Trump’s Atelier Versace dress, nor did we think highly of the Chanel look seen on Kristen Stewart.

We also struggled with someone we generally adore seeing in a fab frock, Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks; this blue gown simply didn’t work.

The black and white gown on Malin Akerman was another miss IOHO.

One dress creating quite a stir (and also making it onto almost every ‘worst dressed’ list), Katy Perry’s LED light-up dress.

We absolutely adored WWD’s commentary on the gown:

“It was enough to provoke a seizure (or at least a headache), but Perry behaved as if nothing were out of the ordinary. Guess no one told her there’s a difference between dressing to stop traffic and dressing like a traffic stop.”

Note who leads off Refinery 29’s review of the “The Bad” styles:

Photo Collage via Refinery29.com

Also seen with Ms. Perry in the dubious distinction category above, Chloë Sevigny in Proenza Schouler, Tina Fey in a jumpsuit of unknown origin, and another Mad Men fave, January Jones.  Ms. Fey and Ms. Jones surprised, they usually appear far better put together. In a new category we are calling “Worst Gown by Volume,” model Coco Rocha and her Zac Posen.

WWD.com

As the Fug Girls wrote:

“…that reminds me of every Bed In A Bag on sale around the time I was going off to college.”

We don’t consider our reading on any fashion topic complete until we have seen what Cathy Horyn writes, we especially like this comment from her story:

“I thought Lauren Santo Domingo looked terrific in a sparkly, long-sleeved beige dress by Proenza Schouler. It suited her height and coloring and it’s nice to see long sleeves.”

Just in case anyone missed the most important part of the comment:

… it’s nice to see long sleeves.”

Not that we’re obsessed proponents of bringing back sleeves for some styles. Not at all. (Heh-heh-heh.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We share good news and not-so-good news in today’s SOTT (Signs of the Times):

  • Saks is closing their San Diego Fashion Valley store in July and the NorthPark (Dallas) Armani store is being closed the 16th of this month. (Muffy and Hopsy – oh no!)
  • Saks is expanding their Off Fifth stores, adding outlets in Pittsburgh, Portland, Houston and the Raleigh/Greensboro area
  • On an up note, Nordstrom opened their new store at Fashion Island (Orange County) a few weeks back

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And with apologies to our Facebook pals who may have seen this on one of our Fan pages, we close with a stellar Pretty in Pink that also qualifies as an Adventure in Argyle:

HP Courtesy Image

That is the soon-to-be-released Preppy Pink Mini from HP, a thing of beauty.  The Mini 210 is technically a netbook, not a laptop, and while we aren’t crazy about the pink keyboard, we are gaga for the overall design.

HP Courtesy Image

The HP Mini 210 in Preppy Pink (it will also come in “white crystal”) launches June 15 in the USA with a $355 price point.  Click here to register for availability notification from HP.

With that, g’bye until next time!

“Preppy Like No Other Magazine”

Hello-Hello, happy Wednesday!

Today we are more-than-a-little crazed and dazed from our day job at the Princess, all of the goings-on are lovely, but also time consuming!

So we jump in with a few things from around the globe, beginning with a look at J. Crew in the Times (of London).

“It is a label selling well-designed, fashionable — although never slavishly so — clothes for men and women. “

We always enjoy seeing other perspectives on American brands, and the Times story doesn’t disappoint; the piece was prompted by news that Crew is going to be available internationally beginning in May, via Net-a-Porter. More from the story:

“Even though it shares an unfortunate belief with a number of Americans that adopting initials adds a lustrous patina of heritage to a name, J.Crew is not in the same room as KFC…”

To read the story in its entirety just click here.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, an item from the fabulous Australian-based Girl with a Satchel blog, a look at the April fashion magazines. We thought readers might enjoy this portion referencing Tatler:

Tatler does traditional preppy like no other magazine, as demonstrated by “Sports Day”. Shot by Ruven Afanador at a male boarding school, the styling is all straw boaters by Lock & Co, white tennis dresses tennis dresses by Bottega Venetta and Jil Sander and wool cardigans from the Polo Ralph Lauren Wimbledon Collection.”

Tatler via Girl with a Satchel

We are going to look for the issue next time we’re visiting our local newsstand.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In today’s Collaboration Update (yes, we gave up and added a category for this sort of thing) we share news that Liberty and Manolo Blahnik are pairing up for a collection.

Courtesy Image via WWD

Women’s Wear Daily reports the collection is slated for September:

“So Blahnik will design a range of items — such as scarves, candles, shoehorns, Wellington boots and notebooks — using Liberty prints.”

The designer has also created a Liberty print of his own.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have an addition to our inexplicable and sporadic coverage of those Gossip Girls kids landing magazine covers.

Cream Magazine

Above we see Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Taylor Momsen and Ed Westwick featured on the April cover of Australian pop-culture magazine Cream.  Penn Badgley, Jessica Szohr and Chace Crawford are included in the photo spread.

For one of today’s Pretty in Pink (and Green) we offer this fun find, the Dinosaur and Heart Crust Cutters. to take the crust off bread, creating something really appetizing for your little ones.

via Pink and Green Scene

These were pointed out to us by the bright minds over at one of our faves, the Pink & Green Scene.

We also offer a little something that looks simply cute as can be, the Spring Romance Mini Potted Fabric Plants.

etsy seller Jane Joss

We found these on etsy from seller Jane Joss, aka the “Fabric Florist.

Until next time, we hope there is pink and green goodness in your life!

Ralph Lauren & Tommy Hilfiger Fashions, Mini Boden

Hello-Hello, happy Tuesday!

As promised, we have a quick look at some of the fall styles shown at New York Fashion Week, beginning with Ralph Lauren.

As noted in the WWD review:

“… when mixed with heartier fare — chunky sweaters; little shearling and fur toppers; knit caps pulled on askew — his Bohemia took on a hint of grunge.”

There was a significant amount of tweed, velvet and small floral prints. Actually, some styles reminded us of Laura Ashley.  Not in a good way.

From Fashionista’s review:

“While Ralph’s runway was fine – lots of velvet, prairie skirts, long colorful beads — it was staid. Nothing — and I mean nothing — felt new.”

Imaxtree photos via Styleist.com

The folks at The Cut wrote:

““Doesn’t an unadulterated mid-calf floral silk, no matter how lovingly rendered, veer maybe just a little too close to the choppy sartorial waters of HSN?”

Most readers can imagine our reaction to the more embellished, overly detailed pieces – not so positive. But some of the classically cut items definitely caught our eye.

We are just never going to be a bohemian, grungy type of girl; fortunately Mr. Lauren designs for a broad range of tastes.

Backstage photos from Kyle Ericksen at WWD do a better job showing the lush fabrics Mr. Lauren used.

Below, Ricky Lauren, Dylan Lauren and Lauren Bush.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, Tommy Hilfiger’s show.

From the Women’s Wear Daily review:

“In his show notes, Hilfiger said the collection channeled a young Katharine Hepburn, which meant lean and soft silhouettes.”

More from WWD:

“Not so practical? The sleeveless trenches were a misstep amongst a series of slouchy, cozy stadium toppers and cable knits.”

Fashion Wire Daily wrote:

“The collection felt fresher than Hilfiger’s clothes have seen in recent seasons, with a less rigid interpretation of what it means to dress preppy in the 21st century.”

We loved several of the dresses.

Mr. Hilfiger called the looks “preppy with a pop,”an apt description.

The styles were not the only items being viewed at the show; several celebrities were perched front and center.  Below we see Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford chatting with Hayden Panettiere, on the right Mr. Hilfiger is with Ashley Olsen.

One of Mr. Crawford’s co-stars was in attendance, Penn Badgley (L), actress Rosario Dawson was seeing the show as well.

It would be fascinating to know how much any/all of these celebrities were compensated to be in attendance as we talked about in this post.

If interested in watching the runway show yourself, simply click on the image below:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have great news for Mini Boden fans: the line has now arrived at Nordstrom.

Courtesy Boden

How fresh and fun do these dresses feel? (They are also reminiscent of mid-century Marimekko prints.)

.

Both are available in Toddler, Little Girl and Big Girl sizes.  We are calling the Infant Rompers are today’s Pretty in Pink and Green and the Infant Pants a Mad for Madras.

Some may already know this, but Boden has recently switched over their USA website to show standard US sizes; shoppers need no longer fret over converting things into UK sizing.

Hopefully your day will be bright and sunny!

Hello-Hello, greetings for another week!

We have several Sales and Savings to report today; some may be repetitious but we thought they bore a second run, beginning with Brooks Brothers.

Brooks has taken significant markdowns on many items, including several pieces that definitely qualify as Adventures in Argyle.

The Merino Argyle Cardigan is now $117.60 ($168), and on the right we have the Cashmere Argyle cardigan, now $208.60 (originally $298).  Both seemed to be available in almost all sizes as of this writing.

The Country Club Mini-Argyle crew sock is now $16 (originally $40) and the Cotton Argyle Anklet now $6 ($15); both are offered in a variety of colorways.

As The Consort has been heard to say: “You can’t go wrong with a good pair of socks from Brooks Brothers.”

Not on sale at Brooks, but definitely worthy of a mention, the St. Jude Collection, including the Brooksie ™ Bear.

The retailer is donating $5 from the sale of each bear to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There are several other items in this collection at Brooks Brothers, all with a portion of sales going to the hospital and research center.

Nautica has a solid selection of discounted merchandise in their online Sale section.  We simply adore the Girls Anchor Print Skirt is now $14.99, originally it sold at $30. We also like the Girls Signal Flag polo.

Two things we fell in love with: the Baby Anchor Print Hoodie (now $14.99) and the Baby Dreamer Sweater Coat (now $21.99)

p5592088v380p5603860v380

The item that really sent us over the moon? The Infant Plaid Trim Onesie.

p5582419v380

If that doesn’t qualify as Prepalicious we don’t know what will; it is off the charts on the Cute-o-meter. (It is also only $9.99.)

We have an update to the Jimmy Choo for H & M post from Friday: it was bedlam at most H&M stores when the collection went on sale Saturday.  In Vancouver shoppers camped outside the store.

Vancouver Sun

From a MarketWatch story:

“…the greater part of both Choo’s ladies’ and men’s collections sold out…. Even in Madrid, the epicenter of one of Europe’s most recession-battered economies, plenty of women and men could be seen toting glossy blue H&M bags Saturday afternoon.”

Below, Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg was among those shopping the H&M on Fifth this weekend.
