Saks’ Sale on Christmas, Fierce Footwear & A New Anti-Prep

Hello-Hello and Happy Thursday!

Today we begin with a topic of a serious nature (ahem) impacting almost everyone (not exactly) in the free world: Hello Kitty.

Please allow us to be among the first to proclaim our fondness for said Kitty. While not found on anyone’s list of Top Preppish Accessories, we still find her to be cute and cuddly, perhaps even a little cheeky. Our appreciation of Ms. Kitty comes as no surprise to readers who have suffered through occasional posts containing KRC (Kitty Related Content).  Perhaps the best that can be said about this practice is that we have been consistently inconsistent, writing about the Hello Kitty MAC collection here, sharing products from the upcoming 35th Anniversary Collection here….

hello-kitty01

…or talking about miscellaneous Kitty merchandise here.

We have even included some Kitty products in our Pretty in Pink category.

We haven’t always understood everything Kitty, like the Large Diamond Pendant necklace at Needless Neiman Marcus… or the Coffee Maker… or the Toaster.

.

However, we have always been able to comprehend their creation and merchandising.

Until now.

This creature is known as Lady Gaga, and the next image may fall under the NSFW umbrella (Not Safe For Work viewing), something we diligently try to avoid here at Princess HQ.

The Daily Mail initially got their little journalistic paws on the photos, and their story explains their ultimate purpose:

“The images – by celebrated photographers Markus Klinko and Indrani  – will be featured on the cover of  the special, limited-edition reissue of GaGa’s hit album, The Fame.

The 23-year-old New Yorker… is reportedly giving away a lock of her hair with every sale of the box-set.

According to her website, it will also include a pair of 3D glasses to view ‘forthcoming Gaga visuals’ and the definitive ‘book of Gaga’.”

Not only is this a Help Us Understand, it is most assuredly an addition to the Anti-Prep Wall of Shame, don’t you think?  If anyone is capable of passing along some information or perspective on Miss Gaga, we would be most appreciative for your gentle guidance and educational assistance.

NOTE: We have been advised by our house guest that she enjoys Miss Gaga’s musical offerings.

Evidently the performer will be guest starring on Gossip Girl next week.

Preppy Retail Therapy, Gossip Girl Goes 80’s

Hello-Hello!

Did everyone survive the weekend?

We enjoyed a delightful time with TQM, engaging in some art viewing followed by pursuits of a retail nature. All of our time together was just wonderful, although we only made minor purchases when shopping: a Lilly Pulitzer polo, a few dress shirts at Brooks Brothers, two pair of shoes at Nordstrom. As these are all basic wardrobe staples, and you all know what they look like, we won’t waste brain matter displaying photos. (Frankly it is rather out of character to report in on the shopping excursion at all, as it would seem that hearing about this sort of activity would be more than tedious for readers, but a few blogging buddies emailed or Tweeted and asked us to share.)

There is one item of a slightly offbeat nature that we bought, a cute little pair of tennies that will make the Fashion Herald beam with pride:

Why will the Herald be pleased? Because these are made of hemp, ever-so-progressive for TP, and also quite eco-friendly.  The Simple sneaks are available in a smorgasbord of colors and feel all squishy-soft-comfy, we love them!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Enough about TP, let’s move on to something *really* important (heh-heh), tonight’s special episode of everyone’s faux-prep favorite, Gossip Girl.  The episode lays some groundwork for a G2 spinoff, as described at NorthJersey.com:

“Lily (Kelly Rutherford) remembers getting kicked out of boarding school when she was 17. Nate and Blair’s (Chace Crawford and Leighton Meester) evening at the prom does not go as planned, thanks to Chuck (Ed Westwick).”

The new show is set in the 1980’s and the fashions reflect that: Brittany Snow, as a younger Lily, and Krysten Ritter as Carol:

Michael /The CW

Michael Desmond/The CW

Here is another look at Krysten Ritter:

Michael Desmond/The CW

And then we see an argyle-clad ‘Lily’ again, looking rather preppish:

Michael Desmond/The CW

Somehow the look is not as elegant as when ‘Betty Draper’ goes for a ride on Mad Men.

Actress January Jones looks fabulous IOHO. What 80’s styles do you like the most? Did you wear any of them…?  Is there photographic evidence? Do tell.

We’re off and out the door, we’ll be back for a chat tomorrow.

Banana Republic Closing Monogram? Hilfiger & Ferragamo Black Friday Deals

Hello-Hello!

Well, if we don’t seem to be encountering another preppy money moment here. We just read that Banana Republic’s new upscale line, Monogram, is closing its doors on Bleecker Street. According to the folks at Racked, American Apparel is moving into the space.  Below, the Monogram store.

<br>

The line received a fair amount of splash when introduced; regulars may recall The Princess wrote about it upon its launch back in April.  The line was described as being more sophisticated, more tailored, and more expensive; 30-40% more expensive in some cases.

sum1_m_monogram_bb

This may not be as cataclysmic as it appears however, as we do remember reading back in April the standalone store was only scheduled to be open for 9 months, which would sync up with the timetable mentioned in the Racked story.

Courtesy Banana Republic

Courtesy Banana Republic

We would be more than surprised if the line performed at anywhere near hoped-for levels. Many loyal Banana Republic customers felt the collection was overpriced, with the merchandise providing little or no justification for the higher cost. Nor was there enough distinction between the Monogram pieces and original Banana Republic fare to attract a new following.

Below, a BR Monogram knot halter gown that is definitely not for the faint of heart, at least not in the Chroma Pink colorway.

As our Tuesday post focused in large part on the J. Crew struggles, and now today we are talking about Banana Republic, it seems ideal that Austin’s American Statesman recently did an interesting story advising readers how they can achieve ‘a James Bond look’ at J. Crew and/or Banana Republic prices.  In the story writer Marques G. Harper suggests:

“If Savile Row isn’t in your budget, other spots worth a look for Bond-style wares are Banana Republic and J. Crew.”

“….the BR Monogram specialty line has classic items such as cardigans, patterned pants, dress shirts, trench coats and a tuxedo (it goes for $650 compared with a Tom Ford tux, which sells for $4,650). In other words, get your Bond look for less.”

A photo accompanies the story, featuring a Tom Ford tuxedo and other items at Needless Markup Neiman Marcus.

In our continuing effort to provide information that is moderately entertaining, yet also fiscally friendly, here are a few more tidbits on Black Friday sales and discounts, as originally mentioned in the WSJ blog:

  • Salvatore Ferragamo boutiques will begin holiday sales Dec. 4, marking down men’s and women’s clothing and accessories by 35% to 50%.
  • Tommy Hilfiger company stores will offer 40% off the entire store on Black Friday, plus they’ll take an additional 25% off purchases of $200 or more between the hours of midnight and 10 a.m.

One cautionary note: as TP was initially reading this she neglected to notice it only applies to Tommy Hilfiger factory stores, or outlet stores, whichever term you prefer.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

The new Gap advertising campaign features a personality from one of TP’s favorite shows, Mad Men.  Actor Jon Hamm plays the show’s always-natty lead character Don Draper; he is joined in the commercial by his real-life significant other, actress Jennifer Westfeldt.

Below, a photo of Mr. Hamm and actress January Jones, who plays Don’s wife, Betty Draper.

One more quick shopping tip, in this case directed at anyone who uses Clinique cosmetics: there is a Trina Turk-designed ‘gift with purchase‘ underway now at Nordstrom. The goodies shown below accompany any $25 Clinique purchase at Nordstrom, actually a fairly good arrangement IOHO, as the lines at the beauty counters can really be tedious when it is GWP time.  TP loves collecting these throughout the year (only as appropriate, when we genuinely require something from the line doing the giveaway, honestly!) and then donating them to a local shelter at the holidays.

Whether visiting the store in person, or in a virtual sense, don’t forget this is going on:

For today’s Pretty in Pink, this Leather Mini Wallet isn’t one you are likely to be lose inside the giant pile otherwise known as your purse! It is from one of TP’s favorites, Elaine Turner.

Don’t forget to enter the Great Giveaway, with $100+ in outstanding preppy gifts from Boatman Geller, the Preppy Princess, with the Summer at Tiffany book as a bonus gift! Just leave a comment telling us one friend you are grateful for and you are entered!

We hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weeknd!

Tommy Hilfiger 2009 Sneak Peek, Ralph Lauren Exclusive Party, New Chicago Luxury Magazine

Is everyone ready for their weekend? The Princess is, and soon to be off to visit the Queen Mother for a little shopping and dining out at new places; a fun weekend is on the way for “the girls”!

One place we probably won’t be able to miss would be the enormous sale at Nordstrom! Good heavens, these additional ongoing sales at Nordies have us a bit befuddled; we had our internal clock set for the Anniversary Sale every year and then the Shoe Sale, but now we have the never-ending sale it seems. Not that we are complaining, for we are not; the change in policy for the company just means we have to pay more attention to our electronic inbox, that’s all. BTW, the banner above saying “33-60% OFF” is the link to the Nordstrom Sale and the banner below is a link to the Hilfiger sale.

Now we move back to Fashion Week for some of the fun and an early peek at a few lines much loved by preps everywhere: Ralph Lauren & Tommy Hilfiger. We start with Mr. Hilfiger’s line as there is just *so* much going on with the company: its move to exclusivity at Macy’s and the Hilfiger stores, the word the company will be selling shares of stock in a public offering, the launch of a new fragrance, Mr. Hilfiger’s home being put on the market at a mere $50 million, and the number of Hilfiger stores in progress, especially the flagship in New York opening on Black Friday!

Tommy Hilfiger Spring-Summer 2009 Collection

This post from a Wall Street Journal blog explains some of the happenings, especially this week:

“On Tuesday Mr. Hilfiger and a dozen motorcyclists roared down Broadway into in Herald Square where they landed at Macy’s in a flashy display to kick off “Tommy Week,” to herald Hilfiger’s now exclusive relationship with Macy’s. Macy’s will be the only U.S. department stores selling Hilfiger. (The brand continues to be carried at Hilfger’s own stores).”

Now just in case you hadn’t heard, “Orange is the new red…” as Mr. Hilfiger said in an interview with WWD about his Spring 2009 Collection. We’re not convinced this is a good thing. TP has been quite fond of the red, white and blue color palette used for so many years.

Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2009 Collection

Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2009 Collection

Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2009 Collection

From that same interview with WWD:

“It’s about relaxed American glamour — chic, wholesome, but sexy,” said Hilfiger before his show. His American girl was indeed chic, a tourist in Europe perhaps, her wardrobe packed with silky blouses, cropped loose trousers, and plenty of easy cocktail dresses (for the pool, there was a terrific backless maillot).”

As with seemingly every show this week, there were plenty of celebrities at the show, including John Mayer and Hilary Swank.

The Wall Street Journal has a great post on the “Heard on the Runway’ blog (that we completely adore!) with more insight into the company:

“What many guests probably didn’t realize was that Hilfiger’s design team based in Amsterdam has taken over designing most of its better merchandise sold in the label’s eponymous boutiques and all its merchandise sold across Europe. (Hilfiger still maintains a design team in New York.)”

Plenty of lovely looks, and far too many we didn’t post as we are trying to fly out the door! Here is one of the Menswear looks we love.

But first, the oh-so-exclusive party at the Ralph Lauren mansion on Wednesday. The gala was hosted by the incredible Lebron James.

Guests included both Lauren Bush and Dylan Lauren seen in the first photo and David Lauren, VP of the company, and yes, Ralph and Ricki Lauren’s son.

The Princess does have one question regarding longtime significant others Lauren Bush and David Lauren..if they were to actually marry, would her name then be Lauren Lauren? Just wondering…

Serena Williams was also a guest…

The party was a fundraiser with proceeds going to the Lebron James Family Foundation which helps single-parent families.

As promised we are sharing a few pieces from the Ralph Lauren Spring 2009 Collection. Talk about a lush look that retains its understated elegance!

To be honest, TP would far prefer the Princess Consort appear in one of the looks above as opposed to the painful styles from Thom Browne witnessed in yesterday’s post.

We’ll share more and include the Women’s line when we are back from our little excursion.

We are sure that many of our favorite preps on the other side of the Big Lake will be pleased to see the launch of Michigan Avenue magazine on Monday. This one comes from Niche Media, who really have some wonderful titles in their portfolio, all of them with both firmly planted in the luxury market, including some we simply can’t live without.

Michigan Avenue Magazine

Michigan Avenue Magazine

We believe a number of our blogging friends will enjoy the glossy, a group of outstanding writers that include Third Coast Prep, Momx2, Tres Poshe Preppy, and now we have come to what we believe is politely referred to as a ‘senior moment,’ for we cannot remember if our dear Lipstick at the Mailbox is a transplanted southerner on the Third Coast or still in the south…? If there are other Chicagoland blogs we have missed, let us know and we will add you to this paragraph of the post! At any rate, this looks to be quite the magazine, and we can’t wait to see it.

Best wishes to everyone for a fabulous weekend!

The Ultimate Preppy Tea Sandwiches, “The Towering World of Jimmy Choo” & Saks Sales

Happy Thursday, ’tis The Princess back again from visiting the Queen and still in a dither about the Princess Consort’s revelations yesterday. Really. I thought we had agreed some things just didn’t need to be made public, lest people think less of The Princess. And then he just goes and tells everyone about his fear of swimming in the ocean, and the time he “…hired a man to swim in the ocean for me”. How embarrassing for everyone to know he hires people to do his swimming for him!

On a side note, all Wall Street reporting aside, one would not know from the number of cars in the Nordstrom parking lot they hadn’t been enjoying a completely stellar year; they were quite busy yesterday. But then again, their sale section seemed really very large, especially when one considers this was not their Anniversary Sale section, but a “regular sale area,” an oxymoron at Nordstrom, for until recently (this year we believe) the only sales were the Anniversary Sale and the Shoe Sale.

We couldn’t resist putting up this image of pink and green sandwiches, the shot was simply too good not to post! It is from flickr, posted almost three years ago. The description follows:

pink and green tea sandwiches: egg with capers and smoked pimentón, turkey with a cranberry-pecan-orange zest cream cheese, smoked salmon with cucumber and an herby cream cheese.

The fillings sound yummy although TP isn’t sure how she would do with the bright and vibrantly-hued bread! Now the next item on our hit parade,

isn’t available until March of next year, but we couldn’t resist at least alerting you to its impending arrival. The Towering World of Jimmy Choo: A Glamorous Story of Power, Profits and Pursuit of the Perfect Shoe comes to us via Bloomsbury Publishing, and is written by Laura Goldstein Crowe, the former (and fab) Fashion Inc. blogger at Conde Nast’s Portfolio magazine, and Sagra Maceira de Rosen, an executive specializing in Luxury and Retail investments for Reig Capital.

One of our favorite websites, the Business of Fashion, managed to get an early and exclusive look at the book. As they put it, “The book is sure to cause a frenzy when published…” and we couldn’t agree more. This one sounds like it has all the makings of an outstanding non-fiction book so filled with inside stories it’s better than many a fiction book. Or, as you frequently hear from TP: “…I couldn’t make this stuff up…” on some of the more unbelievable posts.

Continuing with the Jimmy Choo track, Saks has several pair on sale at markdowns that are significant if these are your style. The Elm Water Snake Sandals start us off, with what TP is tempted to describe as “only a 4.5″ heel,” the way things are shaping up. (And up…and up!) These have “…Glamorous water snake metallic wraps at the cut-out ankle.” Indeed. Originally $920, these are now just $367.90.

Additionally Saks offers the Aeon Lizard Sandals, also originally $920, now $551.90.

A few more sale samplings at Saks, including the Burberry Infant’s Stripe Skirted Onesie at $62.90 from $95; it has snaps at the shoulders, tough to see in the photos, we know.

Also available if you’re looking for something a bit subdued for yourself, the Carmen Marc Valvo Polka Dot Dress is light and foofy, originally $330 and now $197.90.

Because we don’t want to show specific items that have limited quantities, here are just a few overview page links to designers at Saks we know you love, so you can just scan all of their sale items rather than seeing one specific item here that has long since sold out.

Their was a fair amount of Lilly Pulitzer left, some Shoshanna bathing suits and cover-ups, a smattering of Tory Burch goodies definitely worth looking at, a good amount of Hugo Boss for him, and a substantial amount of Juicy Couture. There is simply oddles more, this is just after The Princess did a quick graze to satisfy her concerns that these merit your time and attention.

We close with a few image of the plans for what is expected to be the ‘world’s largest fountain,” set to be built in Dubai. Situated next to the Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest structure as of July 4th, with an observation deck slated for the 124th Floor when the building is completed sometime in 2009.

As the company’s news release explains:

The fountain on Burj Dubai Lake is more than a visual spectacle that adds to the aesthetics of Downtown Burj Dubai. It is an engineering marvel and will further contribute to Dubai’s rich array of tourist attractions.

The Tower will have one of the first Giorgio Armani hotels in the world, the “Dubai Armani Hotel.” A visit to the Burj Dubai website is an eyeopener; you can also enter a contest to actually name the enormous fountains.

As TP is truly something of a geek inside, she can’t resist sharing this image of “3 Upcoming Architectural Wonders in the UAE,” courtesy of the Hotel Club Travel Blog.

Serena’s Trench Coat, Sharapova Shocker, Tiffany and Tennis, Original Penguin SALE!

Yesterday’s post covered the topic of style at Wimbledon, and the ‘Preppy vs. Pirate’ attributes assigned to the Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal rivalry. And whilst those issues certainly have all the excitement of Cook’s day old rice pudding (that is not a slam mind you, it is *very* good indeed) we did tease other fashion updates, and we do want to deliver on that promise. Let’s start with the trench coat, which we might point out is sometimes referred to as a ‘mackintosh,’ albeit infrequently in this household. At any rate, here you have it:

Serena Williams Trench Coat Wimbledon 6/24

We are talking about the white trench coat donned by Serena Williams and worn for her entrance onto the court. It may be difficult to spot in the photograph above, but there is a gold Nike swoosh on the upper left side. And the back story on the coat?

“I was talking to Nike, I walked in, had this great coat on there and they said we should do a coat like this for Wimbledon,” explained Serena about the evolution of this coat. “I was like, Okay, cool. I was really all about it. Now I have a wonderful white coat I can wear on the court and also, you know, in New York for those rainy days. “

The above is from Serena’s home page; unfortunately there do not appear to be any updated Wimbledon pix, a shame for a site of this sophistication, although there are audio updates from Wimbledon one may download. When asked about The Coat following her match (which she won handily) Ms. Williams was positively effusive about the coat: “I just love coats. I’m always buying Burberry coats. And I don’t know why, because I live in Florida, so it doesn’t really add up.”

Serena Williams in trench coat wimbledom

When queried about Ms. Williams’ coat, a spokesperson for the AEC (All England Club) said “As long as she is wearing clothes, and they are white, we will be happy,” referencing the Club’s hyper-strict dress code for play.

Moving on to our next tennis fashion discussion, let’s start with a look at The Tuxedo Shorts Set as worn by the lovely Maria Sharapova today. A bit of background on this: Ms. Sharapova has never worn shorts at a Grand Slam event. Until now.

Maria Sharapova Formal Tuxedo Shorts handout photo

Presumably many of you have already seen coverage of the Tennis Tuxedo, if you will, but hopefully our way-too-many photos, like the one above that shows the jacket more clearly than any of the candid shots did.

Maria Sharapova Wimbledon

The Nike Sleeveless Women’s Tennis Top is available in white or navy, with the navy a superior look in our opinion.

Maria Sharapova Nike Tuxedo Tennis TopSharapova

Of course, nothing we write from this distance will capture the excitement and energy of being at Wimbledon, as we are all too aware. We did think this writer’s description in the Telegraph’s story of the Sharapova apparel was apt, also done with a sense of humor, vital when covering these things.

The clothes? The tuxedo is not, repeat not a tuxedo, despite its wearer having described it as such. It is a waist-belted jacket with wide lapels, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Sharapova Wimbledon 2008

The shorts… there isn’t a great deal to say about the shorts, except to note that they cover what they are supposed to cover and that occasionally, especially when she is doing that left foot, right foot shuffle before she serves, the rear view resembles a pair of puppies scuffling in a bag.

Of course, the tennis apparel wardrobe is not all Ms. Sharapova must think about; she is also tasked with wearing Tiffany earrings. Long a friend to the tennis world, the jeweler is partnering with the glamorous tennis star for a two-year period covering the four Grand Slam championships in each of those years. A pair of earrings is designated for each tourney and once worn by Ms. Sharapova made available for sale online and at the company’s retail outlets. And the Wimbledon earrings?

Tiffany Swing Triple drop earrings

They are the Tiffany Swing earrings for pierced ears, described thusly:

Tiffany for Maria Sharapova. The world’s top-ranked player in women’s tennis is wearing Tiffany Swing earrings at Wimbledon. Triple drop earrings of round brilliant diamonds in platinum, for pierced ears.

The first pair made their debut at the French Open, 18k yellow gold Elsa Peretti Wave earrings “that cut a striking profile without adding weight.” The Princess must admit she was unaware Tiffany accessorized tennis dresses. But since that event was played we have learned that Ms. Sharapova’s French Open dress, the so-called Paris dress by Nike, has a “luminous Tiffany pearl button closure that fastens at the back of the dress.”

SHarapova Nike Paris dress

Nike Paris tennis dress with tiffany pearl closure

TP found the dress to be an absolutely stunning creation, simply beautiful on Ms. Sharapova. For multiple views of the dress, drop by Zappos.

And one last tidbit about Tiffany and tennis: their 2007 US Open collection in partnership with the USTA for the US Open last year wasn’t entirely hideous, as can be the case with the ‘promotional’ or ‘collectible’ jewelry accessory markets.

2007 US Open Tiffany pieces

Finally, a few final sale notes for the day. The first is Nordstrom where the ginormous SALE continues, and we are so pleased to see the Sugar ‘Smokin Cat’ Casual Houndstooth Flat we adore is marked down to 50% off its original price, and amazingly, there appears to be a good selection of sizes.

Then there is the Original Penguin SALE, a must if you can make the time.

Unusual Sales at Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom; Shorts at J Crew, The Usual Sales at Vera Bradley, etc.

You are aware The Princess is loathe to discuss the “M” word (as you know, it’s just so crass and, well, common), but it seems that economic realities are forcing the issue, at least if we are to let you know about some unusual sales and higher-than-normal markdowns at a few of our favorite retailers. Let’s start with Brooks Brothers which has so many ‘specials’ running, it would be incredibly tedious to list them all, so here are a few highlights:

Online Only, Ending Sunday June 8 (until they extend it again…or not) markdowns to 60% Off, somewhat unusual for Brooks, LOADS of Father’s Day specials and Women’s Shoes & Handbags are 25% off.

Brooks Brothers Home Page 60% Off Online Only Sale

One quick little promotional announcement from The Preppy Princess that is also of the saving variety, a reminder to use the code BLOGDEAL to receive 10% off the PreppyPrincess.com site until June 30, including these fab aprons (can you say great hostess gift?):

Me Too Apron Teal/Chocolate Preppy Princess Meadows Apron

Over at Vera Bradley, that Sale continues as well, with 25% off Retiring Colors, and you know how quickly these can fly out the door. (Or off the site, so to speak.)

Vera Bradley

Vera Bradley Capri Blue Cosmetic Purse Vera Bradley mesa Red eyeglass case

The Princess has always been partial to Capri Blue, and may snap up this little cosmetic case in that pattern. Or the Mesa Red eyeglass case? There are oodles of other sale items, including decorative accessories, lamps, and more soft goods like the microfiber lightweight luggage pieces, including this Garment Bag. There’s also tableware and stationery items, like the Citrus Loose Notes shown below.

Vera Bradley Microfiber Luggage Vera Bradley Loose Notes Citrus

One of the more unusual sales is found at Nordstrom, where there are two oddities from TP’s perspective. The first is that the Shoe Sale and Apparel Sale do not cross paths. As of now however, they do, which brings us to oddity number two, the amount of the discount or markdown: it is generally no more than 40%, but now it is 50% online & in store on select women’s apparel & shoes. More power to them. (In reality it would seem that it is more power to you and your Nordstrom card.)

J Crew Shorts sale

The J Crew Sale continues apace with one addition: selected summer shorts are 25% off, please note this is online only. Now we thought we might take this opportunity to remind everyone the J Crew sale includes their absolutely to-die-for Crewcuts line for children and the Boys and Girls sizes as well.

J Crew Crewcuts sale

Speaking about children’s clothing reminds TP that one of our favorites, Garnet Hill, is having their incredible Semi-Annual Kids’ Sale and Clearance. If you have shopped this before, then you already know. If not, then stop reading and get going, because the merchandise is better than top notch, the styles are beyond delightful and the prices are killer. There are several pages of Kids’ items below $10, always helpful for the pocketbook. Of course, The Princess is always helpless before a bucket hat, especially when it’s for a child and on sale for $6, and Alligator Sandals for Toddlers and Little Boys from ECCO are just too cute, not to mention good for their feet.

Garnet Hills Kids Bucket HatGarnet Hills Kids ECCO Alligator Sandals

Moving away from the ‘standard’ or annual/semi-annual type sale to the rather unexpected, we move to the Neiman Marcus situation. Mind you, as we write this we are not complaining whatsoever about the opportunity to save a few pennies whilst making our contribution to the bigger economic picture, not at all. We just dislike an unhealthy economic outlook from a global perspective.

In a story published in yesterday’s Dallas Morning News, CEO Burt Tansky said that business was so rough last quarter Neiman’s did some unusual things, like extending markdowns from a “One Day Only” Men’s Sale into a second day. Ouch. And he also told the paper the company is buying less Fall merchandise, somewhat unusual in and of itself. But here’s what shoppers want to know: he also told the newspaper the store will be adding more sales in upcoming months, and they are going to have to be more promotional. “More Promotional” is code for sales, or more aggressive markdowns, or both and this is sounding like both to us. At any rate, their Designer Sale is in its ‘Final Days’ at 35% off, and at the Last Call Online Clearance the bargains continue with discounts up to 65%.

While we’re talking upper end department stores, how about Barneys? Yikes! This is unheard of!

Really. This just doesn’t happen. The Princess realizes that if you don’t have cause to follow the retail scene or shop here, this truly is one big yawn. Understood. However, it ceases to be a yawner when one gazes upon that hideous orange and realizes that Barneys is doing 40% markdowns, and then furthers gasps, saying, oh my, they’re including Men’s, Baby, Shoes, and Home! I mean, look at this darling little Malina dress for Infant Girls of some of the softest 100% cotton you will ever (I mean, ever) feel. There are some good to great deals on Men’s Zegna dress shirt, A couple of FYIs on the online sale: There is a lot of men’s merchandise, including a lot of Prada, Zegna, while we would recommend skipping the Home Gift section unless desperate as it is slim pickings – in store offerings are much better on that front from what we are hearing.

PRADA Degrade Ballet Flat at Barneys Sigerson Morrison Mirror Metallic Sandal

Additionally, there is a significant group of Women’s Sale Shoes, with something for everyone (trust The Princess on this), with a good number of Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Prada, Miu Miu, Lanvin (including the Satin and Flower Ballet Flat!), Marc by Marc Jacobs, CO-OP by Barneys New York, Robert Clergerie, Fendi, Chloe, Jil Sander, Derek Lam, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Michel Cazabat, Sigerson Morrison, and Henry Cuir. We show the Prada Degrade Ballet Flat way above on top, and the Sigerson Morrison Mirror Metallic Sandal, way above on bottom. Now here is what’s known as a tease: you may want to make particular note of the Sigerson Morrison sandal, as our next post will involve Sigerson Morrison and your favorite discount store. Yep. Promise. Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle…um, never mind.

Essentially, everyone is having a sale, including Chanel, with their private sale running through tonight, and then their one-day public sale running tomorrow. Talbots has taken an additional 20% off their clearance merchandise online only, so click here if it tickles your fancy, although TP has found very little there of late to get excited about. Net-a-Porter continues their Spring ’08 Sale, with new reductions taken.
