Lilly Pulitzer’s Home Store Experiment, Serious Party Frocks & Pooches on Parade

Hello-Hello, welcome to another wacky week here at the Prepatorium, when all manner of things seem to be happening at the same time.

We begin with word that Lilly Pulitzer is going to experiment with a new type of store altogether, one that the company is going to try out in Raleigh, NC. Here is more from the News Observer’s story:

“The store will be a Lilly Pulitzer Lifestyle Store, the first Lilly Pulitzer store in the country to sell home and fashion items under one roof. It will be similar to stores from companies such as Anthropologie that put different kinds of merchandise in one outlet.”

Below, pieces from the soon-to-debut Lilly Pulitzer Furniture line via Dovecote Decor.

According to the story putting apparel & accessories right alongside the new home furnishings collection from HFI is a test; we presume that if it is successful the practice will be replicated in other locations.

Via Dovecote Decor

On the surface it makes a great deal of sense, allowing the company to display even a few items from what is an *enormous* furniture collection of 200+ pieces alongside its iconic clothing and accessories.  We may have to impose upon our friends in the area to do a little investigating once this is up and running, hello, Adventures of a Southern Newlywed?

We move now to Fashion Week, with a look at Jason Wu’s wonderful RTW styles for this fall.

While the notion of dealing with anything for fall is anathema, the tailoring in this collection is simply stunning. Below, just a few of the designer’s gorgeous party frocks.

The word exquisite comes to mind.

In Friday’s post we promised a look at the Fall/Winter styles from Nautica, a Princess fave.

As with all collections, the company invokes its nautical roots. Designer Chris Cox said his inspiration for the collection was Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan.

From WWD’s review:

“Never forsaking the brand’s DNA, he transformed an archival peacoat into a form-fitting, elongated version, trimmed the suits to give them a fresh and modern feel and added several wool toggle coats for those crisp evenings at the boathouse.”

The presentation was staged to look like a waterside setting, pulled off rather successfully IOHO.

Because it’s not enough to have all of the nonsense mentioned above going on, it’s also time for this.

Of course, the Westminster show means it was also time for the Pre-Westminster Fashion Show.

It seems not everyone was happy to see this on their social calendar.

Television coverage begins this evening at 8pm on USA, switching to CNBC from 9-11pm; that schedule is repeated tomorrow night.

We hope to be back tomorrow with more, but it may be Wednesday before we can dig out from the mess that is the desk. Sigh. So we leave you with a Fashion Week photo selected with a few friends in mind (Preppy 101? Miss Julie?):

Friday Fun & Fashion Week

Hello-Hello, we are ever-so-tickled that it is Friday, the promise of a slightly more relaxed pace over the weekend holds great appeal.

As we have mentioned, Fashion Week is officially underway, kicking off Wednesday with the Heart Truth Red Dress Collection. The fashion show is part of the month-long effort to raise awareness about heart disease, the #1 killer of women.

Above we show Denise Richards, Dita Von Teese and Suzanne Somers.  Below, Julianne Hough in a Swarovski embellished gown.

Here is more on the event:

“….reminds women of the need to protect their heart health and inspires them to take action. Each February since its launch, The Red Dress symbol has come to life on the runway with the support of the fashion industry and celebrity models at the Red Dress Collection Fashion Show.”

Is it just us, or do all three people in that photo look a little… off?

One can always look forward to a full slate of social events tied to NYFW, including the amfAR gala headlined by President Clinton Wednesday night. Below left we see the President’s daughter Chelsea, as well as Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively in Alexander McQueen.

One of last night’s hot tickets was GQ’s menswear bash at the oh-so-chic Ace Hotel.  Ms. Lively’s co-star Penn Badgley was in attendance at that party, along with Tommy Hilfiger and Jessica Alba.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Shifting our attention back to actual fashions, we offer a few images from yesterday’s Steven Alan show.

Catwalking via NYTimes.com

Before offering any bloviations thoughts about the styles, it should be said that we seem to be having a bit of a Crankenstein moment; the words ‘fall fashion’ bring to mind images of wintry weather, and the very. last. thing. we want to see are runways overflowing with fall colors, fabrics and designs. We are eager to embrace the bright, vibrant colors of spring, not autumn’s earth tones. (Insert ‘harrumph,’ crossed arms and world class pout here.)

Back to the Steven Alan show, described by several reviewers as “rugged preppy,” the pieces are always cut with classic lines and also very well constructed. We generally find lots to like when seeing this line, but just didn’t have that reaction this time.

The Spring 2011 line seemed far more appealing, if interested in seeing that collection in its entirety, click here for the lookbook.

Wondering what models do when it is time to hurry up and wait?

Fashion Week crowd shots are always entertaining, here is one that caught our eye:

In the “will they never learn?” category, we take a peek at yesterday’s Christian Siriano show. Below we see model Alexa Chung with actresses Gabrielle Union and Mena Suvari at the show.

In speaking to the ‘will they never learn?’ issue, a look at the shoes; keep in mind Mr. Siriano is an experienced footwear designer with several collections for Payless under his belt.

From Fashionista:

“It was like Christian went a little too overboard trying to balance the chiffon and floral theme with big angry shoes. I love a big shoe, but it’s time to take it down a notch, never mind the peril to the models.”

The peril?

AP Photo

One of several models losing the struggle with the sky-high shoes. More from Fashionista:

“The shoes at Christian Siriano’s show were killer. No, that’s not a compliment. They nearly killed at least four models. One girl took a tumble and multiple others tripped, faltered, or stumbled; one was so completely irritated by them that she took them off during the finale walk in a huff.”

While it is unlikely any of Mr. Siriano’s work will ever be seen here at The Prepatorium, we do admire his talent, below, two gowns from the designer’s fall line.

Our final NYFW shot today is from a show just about to get underway, Nautica, this image is from the company’s Twitter photo stream.

That is model Ryan Carney getting ready backstage before the presentation, we look forward to sharing more from this collection Monday.

We leave you with two items qualifying as Friday Fun, the first comes via the Shiny Sheet, the paper mentioned a segment on Lilly Pulitzer vintage fashions airing in today’s Martha Stewart show, this fab photo accompanied the story.

That is Ms. Pulitzer in the amazing pink headdress, she is wearing one of her own designs at a 1968 party she hosted.  A reminder that the show now airs on the Hallmark Channel, and while it aired this morning at 10am, we presume it will be repeated at some point.

Our other item is also a Pretty in Pink:

Do you think it would make an acceptable Prepmobile? (Heh, heh, heh.)

Until next time, we hope everyone is able to enjoy a restful, restorative weekend.

Fashion Week: Tory Burch & “Where Fashion Is Not Our Friend”

Hello-Hello, happy Thursday!

As New York Fashion Week draws to a close, we have a look at yesterday’s Tory Burch show.

As in other shows, dresses and skirts ran longer, many hitting mid-calf, a marked (and welcome) departure from what we have been seeing on the runway in previous years.

From the Women’s Wear Daily review:

“For every jet-set babe, à la Marisa Berenson (peasant blouses, sensual silk dresses), there was a louche Lauren Hutton (slim, tailored suiting) or bohemian Ali MacGraw (crochet polos, Baja sweaters).”

There was much to like, including many pieces in the navy group.

Even the shimmering lamé looked tailored and glamorous, not loud or inappropriate.

We very much like the navy tweed jacket on the left, as well as the trench coat on the right.

But our favorite look has to be this one, right down to what looks like a wicker handbag.

One of the fashion world’s most plugged-in designers, Ms. Burch uses her Facebook page, blog and Twitter account to gather opinions and share information, attributing some design decisions to feedback she receives from customers.

Many celebrities were seen in the front row for the show, WWD’s Steve Eichner snapped these images of Kanye West and Aerin Lauder.

When it comes to a broader view of significant trends, here is a snippet from Sally Singer’s story in T Magazine, “The Rise and Fall at New York Fashion Week”:

“One thing we have learned so far from the New York spring runways is that waistlines are rising and hemlines falling, and heaven help those with stubby legs.”

One thing that does not appear to be going away:

The shoes above are from the Tory Burch show; more on the styles from Sally Singer’s story:

“But then there is the conundrum of footwear, and here is where fashion is not our friend….it’s back to the platforms (terrific at Tory Burch)….”

We also have images for next spring’s line from Nautica, a brand we remain fond of here at the Prepatorium.

Back to womenswear, St. John showed spring styles last week.

We are not sure St. John, struggling for some time now, has fully found its way, although some pieces looked appealing.

  • Today the book tour heads to LL Bean at Tysons Corner, that would be a fun event to attend.

With that we say so long until next time!

Red Carpet Hits & Misses, Tommy Hilfiger Show

Hello-Hello, and welcome to the week ahead!

Today we begin with red carpet fashions, following last night’s Emmy Awards.

Many critics the evening’s big fashion winner was January Jones (aka Betty Draper on Mad Men) in her Atelier Versace gown.

Also in Versace, Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively; costar Leighton Meester wore Bottega Veneta.

On the far side of the Pond, the Sun thought poorly of Chloe Sevigny’s apparel choice:

“”…what looked like a polka-dot bed sheet to the event. The toga-like ensemble was by Isaac Mizrahi Resort 2010.”

Ouch. Another gown receiving negative reviews, Victoria Rowell’s. (Ms. Rowell stars in The Young and the Restless.)

Also on hand, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian in understated gowns, although there is much discussion about the need for proper…ah, appropriate…. umm, the need for…well, there is no delicate way to say this, there is chatter about the lack of proper undergarments ‘neath the gown.

It is time leave the party frocks behind and move on to the topic of Fashion Week, as we still have more to cover on that front. The Tommy Hilfiger presentation coincided with the official opening of the retailer’s new 5th Avenue flagship.

Many a celebrity could be found at the party celebrating the store’s opening, as described in this post. The first look down the runway in Mr. Hilfiger’s Spring 2010 line was this Pretty in Pink grouping.

The nautical influences were easy to spot.

AP had this to say in their review:

“Hilfiger’s theme was the “relaxed glamour” of a Southern California boardwalk, which meant a surprisingly cohesive mix of crisp nautical looks and disco-era slinky styles.”

Men’s and women’s styles are seen in the same show.

Thomas /WWD

Broader shoulders were evident in most pieces, but not all.

Style.com was positive in their write-up:

“… an energetic and fresh-scrubbed collection, named Beachside Romp, that was meant to evoke a SoCal boardwalk but could indeed play anywhere.”

We concur with the assessment from Fashion Wire Daily:

“A highly energetic, if not necessarily highly original, runway show.”

We did think this little dress was darling, although much too young for TP.

We hope this provides a good sense of the Spring 2010 Hilfiger line.  We do have several other styles to share from New York Fashion Week, hopefully in tomorrow’s post.

Of even greater urgency, London Fashion Week is already underway. Below, the seating chart for the London Burberry show, as photographed by none other than the label’s Creative Director, Christopher Bailey.

May your Monday evening be prepalicious!

Amended to add: And may everyone in the southeast, especially Atlanta, be safe and dry.

The Stars come out for Tennis, Nastia, Maria & Dara do Fashion Week

How about that tennis yesterday?!

Unusual as it was to have a Monday Men’s final at the US Open, things at Flushing Meadows were up and running smoothly well before yesterday’s 5pm match between defending champion Roger Federer and challenger Andy Murray. Crooner Harrick Connick Jr. helped get things underway by singing the national anthem, and onlookers included everyone from actress Natalie Portman….

…to Ralph and Ricki Lauren, who are seated behind singer Tony Bennett….

A rather fierce-looking Oscar de la Renta (during Fashion Week no less!) as well as Tom Brokaw & Star Jones.

As well as Melania and Donald Trump. It would appear the Donald would like young Baron Trump to observe the basic rules of good conduct whilst watching the match… or something. Perhaps a bit much to ask of someone that age, hmmm?

Honestly. Then we have actress Anne Hathaway and Ms. Jones again….

Along with Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Meyer, Marisol Thomas, and Rob Thomas (above), and Regis Philbin with his wife Joy, seen below.

Once again Mr. Federer prevailed. In rather short order we might add.

Season saved.

We don’t believe we have ever (neverever) seen Mr. Federer look happier.

Just plain out pleased, able to enjoy the moment.

And then it is time to make the rounds.

More than one online publication or commentator used the word ‘preppy’ in referring to Mr. Federer today, and we would concur, his look certainly supports that descriptor, and not for the first time. BTW, for any fans wanting a red hat very similar to the one he wears, they are still available at his online shop, with a few other items, tee-shirts, calendars and the like.

We move on to other stars on another stage altogether now, and of course we’re talking about Fashion Week, Day Six.

Remember the post when we mentioned that ace Maria Sharapova had invited Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin to the Peter Som show? Well, here they are last night, in front row seats, as promised. You see actresses Kate Mara and Elizabeth Banks on their left, and all are quite intent upon seeing the show. How tiny does young Nastia look in comparison to the others?!

It seemed utterly appropriate for Ms. Liukin to be in a gold dress; she looked radiant.

Nastia wasn’t the only Olympian at the shows. In fact Olympic swimmer Dara Torres actually walked for designer Charles Nolan. The 41-year-old Olympic swimmer modeled two different looks, the first a vintage-inspired swimsuit and the second a black wrap dress.

The four-time Olympian carried her daughter Tessa for her first turn around the room during the show at the designer’s studio in Chelsea. What an outstanding idea, and not the first time non-professional models have been used by the designer. As a blog post from the style writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer put it:

“Nolan’s show is always enjoyable, thanks in part to his commitment to the inclusion of “real” people along with models on the runway. This season’s batch included a holistic healer, a grandmother, a ferry boat captain, and oh yeah, a 12-time Olympic medalist.”

We do love many of Nolan’s styles, but it’s possible we love his sketches even more:
