Polo for “People in Seersucker,” Le Boutique Targét’s Next Designer (After Missoni)

Happy beginning of a new week to everyone, thanking you for popping in for a visit.

Did you spend any time watching this yesterday?

While not one for the ages, it was nice to see these two duel again.

Vogue’s Anna Wintour appeared to enjoy the match, in front of her we see Mr. Federer’s wife Mika.

We did not see the historic women’s final, where Li Na became the first Asian player to win a Grand Slam singles title. Below the champion poses with her trophy during a photocall after the match.

Next up on the circuit, Wimbledon, starting in just about two weeks.

In other sporting news….(kinda’ sorta’) this weekend was the annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic on Governor’s Island.

Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

On hand this year, Deborra-Lee Furness, Julianna Margulies, Naomi Watts, Donna Karan, Wyclef Jean, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Paul Haggis. Mr. Jackman was the emcee for the afternoon’s activities.

The Times’ City Room blog carried an interesting story that had a bit of a bite:

“For a few hours on Sunday, Governors Island became something of a Hamptons satellite, dotted with people in Nantucket reds, linen suits, Lilly Pulitzer pinks and sunhats that seemed as wide as a city block.

They came for an exhibition polo match put on with the intention, according to the organizers, of bringing the elite sport down from on high. But the thousands of spectators, who sipped Champagne costumed in high Hamptons style, seemed intent on just the opposite.”

The event draws an interesting crowd. Below left, Andre Balaz and Naomi Watts, on the right we see one of our Anti-Preps, Nicky Hilton.

Below we see designer Keren Craig with Olivia Palermo, on the right, Nacho Figueras.

Mr. Figueras models for Polo Ralph Lauren and also plays for the Black Watch, a team sponsored by PRL.

Back to the City Room post:

But even with the free admission and ferry ride, polo populism still seemed a far-off dream. Champagne, at $17 a flute, seemed to be the drink of choice. And though there might have been some who went to Governors Island instead of a Yankees game (the Yankees were playing in California, anyway), most of the pinstripes were on seersucker suits.

Frankly, we think almost any free sporting event is a good thing. But to pretend that this is a sport for everyone and anyone borders on the ludicrous.  More from the City Room’s piece:

Mr. Figueras, who is known as Nacho, said the event was intended to “bring polo to the people.”

“For a kid to wake up in the morning” he added, “and say, ‘Dad look, let’s go watch the polo instead of the Yankees game’ – ultimately that would be my dream.”

Mr. Figueras estimated that high-level horses – “we are talking about Formula One horses,” he said – cost up to $250,000.

Considering admission to a Yankees game requires a second mortgage a significant cash outlay, perhaps that isn’t far off the mark. On a more positive note, Ms. Karan’s party was also a fundraiser for Hope Help and Rebuild Haiti.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A sporting event on the far side of the pond also drew attention this weekend. Many in the royal family turned out to watch the Queen’s horse race in the Epsom Derby. The Queen was in hot pink, definitely today’s Pretty in Pink.

Much of the buzz surrounded an appearance by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate.

The Mirror

The couple looked relaxed and happy for their first public outing since their wedding. Princess Eugenie was in black and white polka dots, Princess Beatrice also looked lovely in a floral print.

Kate wore another Reiss dress with LK Bennett accessories. To see details on the complete ensemble, visit our sister blog, What Kate Wore.

It seemed that everyone had a good time, despite the Queen’s horse throwing a shoe and finishing third.

We have several tidbits about an item many of us couldn’t live without, from a wardrobe perspective, the polo shirt. Today’s Valet carries a good backgrounder on the shirt’s origins, including how it came by its name after René Lacoste decided to create tennis shirts that would be more practical and comfortable:

“…Lacoste set out to make a more comfortable, short-sleeve style. He was inspired by Anglo-Indian polo players, who managed to play in extreme heat and bright sun thanks to their lightweight pique cotton jerseys.”

The story is part of Valet’s “Anatomy of a Classic” series, examining iconic items found in a gentleman’s wardrobe.  Today’s post includes a look at some of the logos seen on the shirts.

Via Valet

Many not as familiar with the tennis champion might find some of Mr. Lacoste’s other creations to be of interest:

Rene Lacoste was never much for rules. He often thought he knew better and oftentimes, he did. A world-class tennis star by the time he was 20, he would later go on to revolutionize the game with such inventions as the ball machine and the steel racket, but it was his innovation while he was still playing that had the largest impact on the world. And it’s the reason why you know of him today—the polo shirt.

We recommend the story, it’s a nice, quick read.

Our other note on polo shirts involves Hermès, the company has just launched its own version of the classic.

Hermès

Fond as we are of this brand, we can only say that $455 for a polo shirt borders on lunacy. Really. I’m sure they are done in a rich, lush cotton with a fabulous hand and incredible drape, but really. To quote Nancy Reagan, just say no. Harrumph.

Finally today, word on Target’s next designer collaboration: the retailer is partnering with Josie NatoriWomen’s Wear Daily has the story (subscription required):

The designer will introduce a limited edition collection with Target, called Josie Natori for Target, that will be a tightly focused group of bras, panties, sleepwear, loungewear, camis and chemises. The Natori line represents Target’s first limited edition foray into lingerie and loungewear.

The line will launch in October, just in time for Christmas, with a second collection scheduled to arrive in January, perfect for marketing to Valentine’s Day shoppers.

On that note we say g’bye until next time!

Royal Polo, Watching a Mad Man & Lilly’s Latest Collaboration

Hello-Hello!  We are ever-so-happy to be back home at the Prepatorium, but we definitely enjoyed our little trip back east, hectic and frenzied as it was.

We begin with this year’s look at the Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Match this weekend, featuring HRH, Prince Harry.

David Goldman/AP

The competition pitted the Black Watch (yes, the team Polo Ralph Lauren sponsors) against the Prince’s Black Rock team. Below we see Black Watch team captain Nacho Figueras at the New York Stock Exchange last week to help promote the event. (You are not hallucinating, that is a horse seen in the background.)

Ben Hider/Getty

If Mr. Figueras looks familiar, it is likely a result of his work for PRL products, including the Double Black fragrance collection.

Courtesy Polo Ralph Lauren

The athlete describes how he relates to varying PRL fragrances in an interview today with AOL’s StyleList.

“The Polo Black guy is suit-and-tie, in the city, going to the theater, a museum; the side of me that goes to the Hamptons and to the beach with the kids is the Polo Blue side; and the Polo Green is the man with the horses and the farm.

Below we see Mr. Figueras and his family at Sunday’s function, the 3rd Annual Veuve Clicquot match.

Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

The event is a fundraiser for one of the Prince’s charities, the American arm of Sentebale, an organization the Prince founded to help AIDs-stricken children in Lesotho.

Despite being an expert horseman, HRH did take a spill.

David Goldman/AP

These two are perhaps the best known polo players in the world.

As mentioned earlier, Polo Ralph Lauren sponsors the Black Watch team. Merchandise in this collection features Mr. Figueras’ number “2”, below we see the Women’s Black Watch Big Pony polo as well the Men’s version.

It wouldn’t be the Veuve without celebrities, Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner were on hand, as was Gayle King. (Photos by Steve Eichner, WWD)

Designer Rachel Roy and actor Josh Lucas also headed to Governor’s Island for the afternoon’s activities.

As did model Carol Alt.

Actor Val Kilmer was in seersucker.

As with Royal Ascot, hats are encouraged.

The Prince wasn’t the only royal taking part, HRH Princess Beatrice was also at the match.

Chris Jackson/Getty Images

Of course the activities are not limited to Sunday’s play, there are other functions one must consider, the Princess also attended Saturday’s Veuve Clicquot reception at Greenwich CC. Again, she is with Mr. Clark.

Chris Jackson/Getty

If you missed this weekend’s events, no cause to fret, they do play July 24-August 8 at the Bridgehampton Polo Club; click here to see the schedule for those matches.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also today, we know a few readers are excited about the July return of Mad Men; something we are totally gaga over occasionally remember if others bring up the topic. (Ahem.) We thought some might enjoy seeing images from this weekend’s Omega Watches launch of its re-designed Constellation line, as Don Draper actor Jon Hamm took part in the celebration.

Also at the party, Adrien Brody, Twilight’s Anna Kendrick and Zhang Ziyi; below we see Ms. Ziyi and Mr. Hamm.

Another relaunch to share, good news for fans of the much-missed Domino magazine: the newly re-done Brides.com site will feature the entire Domino archive.

Many articles are already up on Brides.com.  Since saying goodbye to Domino 16 months ago we have become very attached to Lonny, an outstanding online shelter publication, but we are happy to learn of this additional resource’s availability.

We have a look at the latest collaboration for Lilly Pulitzer.

Courtesy Barnes & Noble

The firm has partnered with Barnes & Noble, creating exclusive Lilly totes and covers for the company’s Nook e-reader.  The totes come in Buena Vista (above) and Secret Garden, below.

Courtesy Barnes & Noble

The totes are nylon with braided handles and they have a clear vinyl pouch for one’s e-reader, priced at $69.95.  These are available now online and at Barnes & Noble stores.  Below we show the not-yet-released Nook cases by Lilly.

These will be available August 5, or they may be reserved here starting July 12; the cases run $49.95 and $59.95.

We cannot leave without sharing a bit about our ever-so-wonderful-evening with one of our favorite partners, Kiel James Patrick.  Kiel and Sarah couldn’t have been nicer hosts Friday evening, arranging a fabulous dinner in the Massachusetts Whaling District.  Some of the lovely setting can be seen in this photo.

Courtesy Kiel James Patrick

Umm, that cocktail in the picture? We’ve nary a clue how it got there. It must be an arm from someone else’s table, yes, that must be what happened. (Heh-heh-heh.)  We extend our thanks to both Sarah and Kiel for an absolutely delightful evening, they are bright, charming and gifted young people.

Blake Lively + Tory Burch = ???

Hello-Hello everyone!

We jump right in today, as we’re leaning towards the possibility of a ‘hit and split’ as it were, meaning something akin to a poorly constructed post with even less import than one generally finds in these quarters! Hee-hee!

As we careen ever-closer to the season premieres of several television programs even TP is amazed at the volume of press devoted to same! (Ummm… this post and countless others would be called…??? Quite.)  This morning we noticed a story in WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) about fashion designers making cameo appearances on season 3 of Gossip Girl:

PHOTO: Giovanni Rufino / The CW

PHOTO: Giovanni Rufino / The CW

As you can surmise from the photograph above showing actress Blake Lively arm-in-arm with designer Tory Burch, Ms. Burch will be seen on the show this fall. In fact, word has it a special set was constructed to look like the inside of the designer’s office.

Also making an appearance on G2, designer and actress Georgina Chapman, half of the Marchesa label. Readers may have seen her in The Nanny Diaries or perhaps Factory Girl.  The WWD story shares a bit more about the designers-on-tv phenomenon:

“This isn’t the first time “Gossip Girl” has tapped real-life members of the fashion flock to appear on-screen — Nacho Figueras shot scenes in Greenwich earlier this summer for the show’s Sept. 14 season premiere, and Tinsley Mortimer had a guest spot last year.”

Both designers are can be seen in the October 5th episode.

Speaking of Gossip Girl… (how many times have we used this hackneyed phrase?) … it seems that the show’s marketing minds have come up with a Fall promotional campaign deemed by some to be more outrageous than those for Seasons 1 or 2.

PHOTO: Kurt Iswarienko/The CW

PHOTO: Kurt Iswarienko/The CW

As someone who has never watched a full episode of the faux-prep program, we do have to admit the still photos for this year’s marketing campaign really have a touch of elegance. However, we shall refrain from using the 3-letter acronym used in the promos that is the primary irritant, as it is vulgar.

Speaking of vulgar, we have this image courtesy of the next issue of Elle Magazine:

Courtesy Elle

Courtesy Elle

Have Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick gone goth? (Is that proper usage of the term…?) Or is it more of a look channeling the popular Twilight style?

Also, as we mentioned Tory Burch up above, we wanted to share this as well, arriving in this morning’s electronic in-bin:

prefall_summer_sale2

Looks like an opportunity to acquire some new looks at a fiscally friendly price point.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few more retail headlines for those following the comings and goings of certain preppish brands:

J. Crew’s new Crewcuts store has opened on Madison Avenue:

Courtesy Photo via WWD

Courtesy Photo via WWD

There are eight other Crewcuts stores, including NorthPark in Dallas (seen below) but this newly-opened shop is considered the flagship.

CrewCuts_DressingRoom_tableau

The story points out one styling point about the kids collection:

“… none of the apparel or accessories would qualify as “mini-me” versions of items in the adult J. Crew collection…”

Mrs. Newlywed, are you smiling?)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And with one last retail note, the new Stubbs & Wooton store has opened, also on Madison Avenue. This is not an additional store, it is a relocation for the brand from their previous spot on Lexington, in the old Sigerson Morrison spot ‘neath the Carlyle. (The other shops are in Southampton and Palm Beach.)

Fashion Week Daily

Fashion Week Daily

There are loads of goodies on hand, including the flannel slipper with Pink Poodle, along with the firm’s classic needlepoint designs.

poodlegrayBmillaped_rustB

But much as we love pink and green, we’re not sure we’re up for the new camouflage needlepoint.

guise pink

What do you think ladies? Is camo cool, whether it is in a slipper or a handbag? And if deemed fashionable, is it prep? (You know our answer.)

G’Bye for now, tune in tomorrow for a madly put-together post about another TV show premiering soon!

Polo in the Hamptons, Lilly Pulitzer Fall 2009

Hello-Hello!

Goodness, what a wacky weekend. We allowed ours to be consumed in large part by this:

PHOTO: Russell Cheyne/Reuters

PHOTO: Russell Cheyne/Reuters

Although we were crushed to see it end up in this fashion:

PHOTO: Eddie Keogh/Reuters

PHOTO: Eddie Keogh/Reuters

However, the fervor of our hopes that Mr. Watson might win must not detract from the ultimate outcome of the tournament, and the remarkable accomplishment of Mr. Cink. We know that Yellow Jacket fans are pleased to see the outcome; the Champion Golfer of the Year as decreed by the R & A is a Georgia Tech alum.

Mr. Watson is an original prep, attending Pembroke Hill in Kansas City before matriculating at Stanford. And while we acknowledge our fondness for Mr. Watson (not only because one of his sponsors is Polo Ralph Lauren), but thought both men conducted themselves with grace and dignity throughout the tournament.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There were other sporting events this weekend, notably the kickoff to the polo season with the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge in Bridgehampton. Among those on hand were model/player Nacho Figueras, seen below.

PHOTO: Getty Images

PHOTO: Getty Images

The match brought a Gossip Girl star to the Hamptons, actor Chace Crawford was in attendance.

PHOTO: Ariel Ramerez

PHOTO: Ariel Ramerez

According to the Times Square Gossip blog Mr. Crawford and/or his entourage may not have conducted themselves as graciously as one would hope; this post has more.  Oddly we had just finished reading this story about Mr. Crawford’s plan for attending Wimbledon earlier this year, written with the classic snark one can frequently find in The Independent (the UK).

“And then there was the US actor Chace Crawford (“Who?” we ask), whose “people” insisted he’d bring a magazine snapper with him to “give your tournament some publicity”.

Yikes.

Those who enjoy watching Mr. Figueras may be pleased to learn the polo player and model for Ralph Lauren is actually slated for an appearance on Gossip Girl; he will be on the show’s season premiere September 14. In a post on the WWD Blog Mr. Figueras talks about his reaction to being on the show:

“First and foremost, I thought it was a great opportunity to promote Polo and my team Black Watch. Second, and most important to my wife, was that I would be able to meet Chuck Bass [actor Ed Westwick].”

The polo scenes were shot at the Greenwich Polo Club.

Finally, in our six degrees of separation segment today we can share the following: golfer Tom Watson’s brother Marshall Watson designed one of the rooms in the Hampton Designer showhome; he had to make many a trip to the media room in that house this weekend to catch a few minutes of his older brother at Turnberry. At last that is the case according to this story on Newsday’s Long Island real estate blog.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In retail notes, the Country Living home collection hits Sears and Kmart next month, both in stores and online. The new collection is inspired by Country Living magazine, and includes tabletop, home textiles, furniture and decorative items. We’re more than a little confused as to what this means for sister site The Country Living Store, as it features merchandise by name brands in all of the categories listed above and several more.

We are more than a bit tardy with this one, but the the Lilly Pulitzer Fall Collection has hit, with loads of fun designs.  In the Pink has the entire Collection online for your shopping pleasure. Here are a few items we’ll show very quickly, if only to display Lilly’s color palette for the fall.

First, the Paley Ruffle Cardigan in navy wool.

Next, the Burke Dress in one of three colorways.

The Palm Beach Printed pants.

F09_71672_611J20.zoom_medium

And the Lulu Dress.

Obviously, there’s no shortage of fun finds in the new collection.

We close with a few goodbyes today. Two gentle men (that is not a typo), strong in ways we can’t comprehend, yet generous of spirit and compassionate in personality.

We are grateful to have had the opportunity to meet one of these extraordinary men.

Courtesy Arizona State University/Reuters

Because most readers have been able to read or watch stories about Mr. Cronkite we shan’t bore you with tedious commentary from these quarters, other than to say he blazed a trail of incredible depth and breadth, setting an image and standards for many of us following in his profession.

We were not as fortunate in making the acquaintance of Henry Allingham; he passed away Saturday at the age of 113. Again, that is not a typo, this gentleman was the oldest man in the world.  He was also a survivor of WWI.  He was a founding member of the RAF in 1918.  A. Founding. Member.

From an Associated Press story about this remarkable man:

He made it a personal crusade to talk about a conflict that wiped out much of a generation. Though nearly blind, he would take the outstretched hands of visitors in both of his, gaze into the eyes of children, veterans and journalists and deliver a message he wanted them all to remember.

Below Mr. Allingham is seen with his great-great grandson in June on the occasion of his birthday.

What an amazing life.

We would be remiss if we neglected to mention Irish-American author Frank McCourt. Mr. McCourt is best known for writing “Angela’s Ashes,” for which he received the Pulitzer.

Until next time…!

Target’s Next Handbag Designer, Princely Polo, J Crew Talks Changes (More Price Cuts)

Happy-Happy Friday everyone, and may the sun be brightly shining upon you as we approach a respite from the frenzy that somehow took over the week.

We begin with news of the next designer collaboration for Le Boutique Tarzsay, aka Target.  The hip discount retailer is partnering with Carlos Falchi for a line of handbags in jewel tones like plum and teal, crafted of faux-snakeskin.

For those unfamiliar with this designer, we share a few current offerings from the upscale designer’s current collection, not associated with the upcoming Target line.

sv4677-423-custom745-64-custom

This will be Target’s eighth limited edition handbag collection; the line is slated to be available from Oct. 11 to Dec. 27.  Fashionistas can still purchase pieces from the company’s current collaborative effort: the Felix Ray for Target collection remains in stores until June 14.  (Pssst – several styles from this group are on clearance!)

Just to ensure we have a Pretty in Pink today, here is another piece from the current Carlos Falchi collection.

Falchi can be found at most of your standard stops: at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, eLuxury and Zappos.

Big doings for Burberry yesterday in honor of the company launching their new Madison Avenue headquarters.  In fact, Mayor Bloomberg officially decreed it Burberry Day, and we’re sure readers will not be surprised to hear there were plenty of posh people celebrating such an amazing (ahem) and august occasion.  Many of the usual suspects were party circuit regulars popped in, or at least made sure to visit the red carpet area leading into the bash.

PHOTO: Andrew H. Walker/Getty

Actress Blake Lively from TV’s Gossip Girl was on hand, sharing her sentiments on what her favorite Burberry fashion is:

“I just live in my Burberry trenches,” Lively said about the fashion company’s signature coat.”

Indeed. Ms. Lively wasn’t the only G2 star on hand, co-star and real-life paramour Penn Badgley also made it to the festivities.

The pièce de résistance for Burberry execs was the unveiling of the company’s logo high above Madison Avenue:

While poking a little fun at some of these functions we don’t want to overlook a seriously good thing occurring in tandem with Burberry’s move into its new US digs. The company is putting $500,000 from their newly established Burberry Foundation into projects geared toward teens.

Some may remember a bit of our incredibly tedious pontificating post discussing the “Business of Preppy,” as we call it. We have an update for J. Crew, who released financial results for the quarter in a conference call with financial analysts yesterday. While things are still not good at Crew (profits down a whopping 33%), they were better than hoped.

One of the benefits of the earnings reports is the accompanying information that looks at future plans.  In today’s WWD story (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) on J. Crew’s financial performance some of CEO Mickey Drexler’s insights and plans for the future are revealed:

  • Adjusting Crewcut prices downward.
  • Getting more aggressive on marketing the new Crewcuts catalogue. The first edition made its debut earlier this month; the second comes out in August.

  • Adjusting investments in higher-priced goods, including the range on Madewell jeans to emphasize those under $100 such as Madewell 37, priced at $59.50, and the “ex-boyfriend” style, priced at $95. Premium jeans can go as high as $198.

According to the story, Mr. Drexler indicated more J. Crew Collection and J. Crew Menswear stores are possibilities, saying he scouted locations this week in San Francisco and Los Angeles for such additions. And how does the retail and branding whiz kid feel about the overall situation?

“In a very perverse way, the bad environment was a big wake-up call. I kind of like it. The customer has become so much more acute and educated about buying goods.”

Good for Mickey, we have always admired his tenacity.

Because we want to end on some Friday Fun, we close with a quick peek at an addition to our Lilly Pulitzer Stationery line: the Lilly Party Pack.

SILLY PRINCESS WARNING — FORGOTTEN CONTENT — SILLY PRINCESS WARNING

Whoops!!! In our fervor to pop into the sunshine we almost forgot to mention Prince Harry’s visit to the city today and tomorrow’s big goings on!

The Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic will feature some faces you may be familiar with:

This would be Nacho Figueras, arguably the best polo player in the world, captain of the Black Watch Polo team. He is also the face for Ralph Lauren’s Black Watch fragrance; Mr. Lauren sponsors the Black Watch team, and also sells limited edition apparel adorned with the team’s logo and Mr. Figueras’ number “2”.

The match this Saturday is destined to be great fun, pitting the Black Watch against another team featuring a famous face:

This would be Prince Harry, who also knows his way around and atop a polo pony. A news release on the event explains the ultimate good purpose behind the gala goings-on:

“Event proceeds will benefit American Friends of Sentebale, a U.S.-based charity that supports at-risk children in Lesotho, Africa”

HRH has already made his first official stops, posing for a photo with firefighters:
