Bazaar Does Twilight, Lilly Car Revealed

Hello-Hello and Happy-Happy Friday!

It is a doubly happy day because we are still enjoying our house guest, and will be off shortly for a little retail therapy.

We begin with a wise move at Talbots in response to a wardrobe choice made by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The retailer is stepping up efforts to capitalize on such occasions.

Talbots may be taking a cue from J. Crew, very aggressive in exploiting multiple First Family appearances in their apparel and accessories. Brooks Brothers and Hickey Freeman have also used similar marketing techniques when the President is wearing their apparel.

Yesterday’s Times carried a story about Mickey Mouse, “After Mickey’s Makeover, Less Mr. Nice Guy

According to the story:

“Mickey as he will appear in the video game Epic Mickey. The game, to be released next fall, will show the character’s darker side.”

Ummm… does Mickey need a darker side?

Of course, some real Friday Fun might best be found at South Coast Plaza, where the new Henri Bendel officially opens their new store today. Perhaps Muffy Martini can float down to Orange County and file a first-hand report for all of us at some point in the future!

And because it is all about fun today, we close with an absolutely fabulous item from launching this week:

Courtesy Lilly Pulitzer

Meet the E-Lilly by Lilly Pulitzer and Tomberlin Electric Car.  The news release better describes the vehicle:

“It’s 100% road worthy, charges with any standard 110v household outlet, and travels for over 30 miles on a single charge. The E-Lilly can be customized with just about anything you want…2-seat, 4-seat, golf bag, trunk and more… even a monogram, and will deliver just in time for the holidays!”

If asking the Christmas Fairy for one of these, they start at $12,995. Our reaction to seeing this little treasure? TDF. Completely and totally TDF.

On that happy note, we hope everyone enjoys a bright and beautiful weekend!

The Times Tackles Harvard’s Preppy Clothing Line

Hello-Hello!

Are we recovered from the long weekend, or perhaps dragging just a little bit? We’re not ashamed to say that here at the Prepatorium we are more of the latter, remaining in denial about the seasonal transition.

Today’s topic involves something we first posted about back in early August: “Harvard’s New Clothing Line. Seriously.” The news was about the line of clothing the University has officially licensed, dubbed Harvard Yard.

Photos: Robert Mitra/WWD via Boston.com

Since that occasion there has been a multitude of coverage in all manner of publications, including the follow-up story published here, “About That Harvard Clothing Line…” That post looked at general reaction to word the school is selling its name, as with this story in The Globe:

“… last week, the news took on a life of its own, dividing the blogosphere into those who either love or hate the slim-cut preppy collection inspired by a New England collegiate look circa 1962.”:

Now the Old Gray Lady has weighed in, setting off a new round of salvos and slings.  The Times story “Crimson and Green” ran on Friday, heading into the holiday weekend.

“So more than a few brainy Cambridge brows began to furrow last month after word trickled out that Harvard had entered into a 10-year licensing agreement for a line of preppy clothing…(a) New England patchwork of tartan, seersucker and old-school plaids, the collection is to arrive in national department stores beginning in February, under the name Harvard Yard.”

The primary criticism leveled in the story centers on the perception of Harvard as elitist, an image the University has been trying to shed. A 2005 graduate, Peter M. Conti-Brown, worked on efforts to “broaden Harvard’s appeal to students from poorer backgrounds” and he is quoted in the story:

““Every move to paste the Harvard name on symbols of prosperity, wealth, privilege and class erects a subtle, insidious ‘Members Only’ sign at the university admissions office,””

““We were going up against 400 years of history,” he said. “Without a doubt, licensing preppy clothes with the Harvard brand is a move in the opposite direction.””

In addition to offering more reactions to the planned apparel line, the story looks at today’s on-campus styles:

“A ramble through Harvard Yard this week, as students returned for a new academic year, revealed more bow ties, polo shirts and Lacoste crocodiles than one might find on the average college campus. But for the most part, today’s Harvard students dress however they like. The usual hoodies, jeans and flip-flops are common.”

Perhaps one of the more fascinating stories on the issue can be found in the Crimson, “Harvard Licenses Brand for Preppy Clothing Line“.

“The clothing deal has amused many bloggers since it was first reported by the trade publication Women’s Wear Daily. Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton asked: “why???” The IvyGate blog quipped: “You know Harvard’s broke when they start competing with Hollister.””

“Even the Chronicle of Higher Education couldn’t resist, and published a blog post called: “My Khakis Went to Harvard.””

The paper’s best coverage comes in the reaction from students, including a young man from the Class of ’11, J.P. Stilz:

“…a member of Harvard’s men’s polo team, and is playing the sport this summer in his home state of Kentucky. He said that he sees two sides to the clothing deal, some of which mirror challenges the polo team has faced. “I think it’s going to be bad for Harvard’s image,” he said. “We already have an image that all of our students are aristocratic, preppy bastards, frankly. So as an undergraduate student I’m kind of taken aback a little bit that that’s going to be happening, and I almost want to laugh at it.””

Again, click here for the Crimson’s story in all of its pithy glory.

Amazingly, NY Fashion Week kicks off this Thursday! We close with a few looks at last-minute preps, shown in this story from Women’s Wear Daily. Below, Carolina Herrera in her studio:

Next, looks from the Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2010 line to be unveiled at the Hilfiger show September 17.

We’re guessing the navy and white dress is meant to conjure images of nautical flags… ?

A Gossip Girl in the Hamptons

Hello-Hello everyone, happy Tuesday!

We made a snap decision yesterday to play Blog Hooky, in part because it was the Consort’s Birthday.  Who can resist spending the day with someone whose Mad Men avatar is this cool?

madmen_icon

We can hardly believe it is less than two weeks until the show returns! We are loving the crazy popularity the avatars are enjoying, they have definitely invaded Planet Twitter! (If you would like to make your own 60’s era look, just sashay on over to the Mad Men Yourself page and make some trouble!)

It was a busy weekend in Water Mill (the Hamptons) with the Annual Super Saturday Sale at Nova’s Ark Project – think giant designer rummage sale with a carnival and other activities and you kind of get the picture. The event is a fundraiser for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, this weekend marked the Sale’s 12th year.

Hosts included Kelly Ripa, Donna Karan, Ariel Foxman of InStyle magazine, and Gossip Girl star Blake Lively. Mr. Foxman can be seen with Ms. Lively in the photo above.  Below, Kelly Ripa and husband Mark Consuelo.

Also on hand, two outstanding designers, Charlotte Ronson and Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss.

Below we see Ms. Lively with another Gossip Girl actress, Kelly Rutherford.

In other G2 news, there is word that Tyra Banks will appear in an upcoming episode; the host of America’s Next Top Model will play an actress.  And one last tidbit, another star from the show, Chace Crawford; he tells Glamour UK that he is already training for his big role in the remake of Footloose.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On a slightly related note, the Observer carried an interesting column: “Why Is No One Watching NYC Prep?”  Ratings are worse than we realized:

“According to Nielson, the episode that aired on July 21, only had 751, 000 viewers.

To compare to other prime-time shows that same night—Hawthorne, the new TNT show with Jada Pinkett Smith, had 3.2 million viewers… and the most watched show was The Deadliest Catch, a documentary series about fishing boats, which had 3.4 million viewers.

…Gossip Girl, perhaps the closest in the genre, had an average viewership of 2.59 million in its first season, which was considered low.”

Well. This doesn’t sound promising. Darn. (Ooooh, snarky Princess!)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have many little retail tidbits to share, starting with the FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) in another Talbots dress, this time on Saturday while in Norfolk. Mrs. Obama was there to speak to returning sailors aboard the USS Eisenhower, as well as the US Comfort battle group.

The First Lady wore Talbots’ Swirl Cotton Dress, available in the color seen above, as well as this:

Talbots

Talbots

The dress is quite the bargain, now selling at $39.99 as opposed to its original price of $139.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We simply must ask if anyone has yet confronted one of the hideous “Christmas in July displays or promotions?  We were reminded of the phenomenon by a story in the WSJ Friday, “Twas 147 Shopping Days Until Christmas

“America’s retailers are responding to the recession with Christmas in July. A number of retailers and toy makers launched Christmas sales and promotions this month…”

The story talks about Sears, as well as one of its divisions, KMart:

“…two retailers have invited shoppers to take a stroll down “Christmas Lane,” anchored by a “Holiday Décor Shoppe” and “Gift Shoppe,” while snowflakes drift over the scene and holiday music plays in the background. Customers are awarded free shipping if they pile up a tab of at least $60 on items ranging from holiday decorations to snowblowers.”

What are your thoughts?

We are blasting out the door with The Consort for a day at the museum, an exhibit called Cars and Guitars. That’s all he wanted for the big birthday, this exhibit and homemade brownies, how easy is that? TP is the luckiest Princess on the Planet, to be sure. Sigh.

The First Family Does Talbots & J. Crew, Our New Nantucket Collection

Hello-Hello, and apologies for the lack of a post yesterday! We can only  attribute it to loads of Princess personalization ordering and the Lilly pre-orders, yikes!
.
Sadly we start with something transcending a fashion faux-pas dollfaces, more like a fashion disaster In Our Most Humble of Opinions.  Sigh.  Behold actress Hayden Panettiere Monday on her way to tape the David Letterman show.
hayden-panettiere-sheer-letterman-01hayden-panettiere-sheer-letterman-02
.
While we understand Ms. Panettiere’s need to promote her new film, is the sheer Caroline Seikaly dress even remotely appropriate for someone not yet 20 years old?  This is eerily reminscent of the dress (seen here) worn by Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester at an MTV awards show in June. Harrumph!
Speaking of television shows featuring fashions of a preppish nature, NY Magazine has an in-depth review of last night’s NYC Prep for those following that train wreck. (As many readers have referred to it.)

On a more upbeat note, the marketing minds at Talbots must have been thrilled to see First Lady Michelle Obama in their rose print dress again, worn this Sunday when boarding Air Force One on the way to Moscow.

BTW, the Talbots Clearance Sale now offers an additional 25% off already reduced prices, making the dress seen above $89.99; it was originally priced at $169.99.

Major Papers Talk Preppy Style

Hello-Hello and happy day to everyone!

We’ll jump right in today with a few things we never seem to fit in our daily posts, despite the fact we start out planning to include them every. single. day.  We are so slow in sharing them many readers are likely to have already seen them, yikes! Here they are in completely random order:

1) The Times had an outstanding story from David Colman a few weeks back in their Dress Codes series, “The All-American Back from Japan,” examining contemporary preppy style.  A sample from the article:

“There is madras everything, button-downs everywhere. Nantucket reds — washed-out pink pants — are the new khakis; Sperry Top-Siders are more common on roof decks than top decks; and the Polo pony and the Lacoste crocodile are now but two of the critters in a zoo of polo shirt insignia.”

The story is accompanied by a companion slide show, “Dress Codes: The Preppy Look” with excellent photos from Dean Isidro. Below, the gentleman wears Benjamin Bixby, Lacoste, Trovata, Brooks Brothers Black Fleece, Marc by Marc Jacobs.

PHOTO: Dean Isidro/NY Times

PHOTO: Dean Isidro/NY Times

The article looks at the history of ‘preppy fashion’ in the US (or more appropriately, that particular moniker for the style) as well as what Mr. Colman refers to as “…the Japanese penchant for Americana…”.

Some of the brands cited in the story and slide show are definitely not “your Father’s preppy style,” although again, TP’s family never referred to it this way. If asked and forced to describe the look TQM probably would have merely said it was conservative or classic, perhaps being so bold as to inquire  “why do you ask?” as it wasn’t something one consciously thought of or needed to discuss. The only possible exception might be if one the children dared desire something out-of-the-norm, in the “no, no, that’s not something we wear” category. How did your family refer to their clothing style? Or did they?

We highly recommend the story and slide show, they are great fun and offer a slew of new brands, some of which you have seen showcased in this space, such as Band of Outsiders, and others we probably won’t be sporting.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

2) Also on the radar for quite some time, this story from the Times of London’s online site:

Preppy power

From twinsets and pearls to cashmere hoodies — new fashion tribes are taking their lead from the Sloanes

The story is another fun read, offering a slightly different perspective as it originates from the far side of the pond.

Yet rapidly growing numbers of people are embracing the preppy look — whether it’s stripy boat-neck T-shirts, argyle sweaters, brogues or cotton pea coats. Look closely and you’ll see preppy is having a makeover right under our noses.”

The story breaks the preppy looks into five different styles, including Euro Preppy, Fashion Preppy and Power Preppy.  Prince Harry’s former flame, Chelsea Davy, is pictured as an example of Public School Preppy:

PHOTO: Antony Jones/UK Press/PA Photos

PHOTO: Antony Jones/UK Press/PA Photos

A reminder that in the UK ‘public schools’ are actually what we call private schools here in the States, for example, Miss Porter’s or Choate would be called ‘public schools’ in England.

The article also has scads more details with the writer’s ideas on what brands specific prep types would wear, their ‘best looks’ as well as “A Look Too Far,” our favorite sub-category.  Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton is classified as a Euro Preppy, although the story notes:

“To be fair, Kate is more neo-Sloane ranger, but, for obvious reasons, the Euro preppy holds her in high esteem.”

As to the paper’s suggestions of a Power Preppy, they include First Lady Michelle Obama in this group. Rather than bore you with more recitation of the article’s content we suggest one toddle on over and personally read the story, we highly recommend it. A visit to the fabulous Europa Fox is also likely to provide far better insight than anything we offer.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

True Chanel addicts with pin money (okay, investment quality pins) to spare will be pleased to learn of the 1980’s and early 90’s Chanel jewelry and accessories now being offered at high-end vintage retailer Resurrection.  Some pieces serve to remind us that the development of LogoPhobia is not merely in reaction to recent creations:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TP is ever-so-excited to learn one of our favorite spots for retail therapy is undergoing a bit of a lift, so to speak.  Fashion Island in Newport Beach (CA) is going to have some work done, adding wonderful stores like Nordstrom to the roster of existing shops, including Neiman’s, Saks, and Bloomies.  Below, an artist’s sketch of the ‘new and improved’ Fashion Island.
