A PREPPY INAUGURATION: Malia, Sasha & Michelle Obama in J. Crew (& Jimmy Choo!)

Hello-Hello…we just flew in the door 7:55pm EST… gasp… and logged in to check on today’s Inaugural

Please accept our apologies for being TARP (no, not that TARP, it means for The Absent Roaming Princess), our time at Market in Chicago stretched beyond our plans. But you will be ever-so-pleased that it did, for we spent oodles of time gazing at the loveliness that is the Lilly Pulitzer Spring accessory line, to name just one cause of our prolonged absence.

But let us move on to a topic that matters: today’s Inaugural fashions! We were on the phone with The Queen Mother when our first photos of the Obama girls came up on the computer screen; she was subjected to a shriek, “OMG, how darling are they????!!!!!!” Really, can we talk about the bows? Everywhere? It was definitely cute overload, and we just love every inch of what they had on.

In case you wanted another glance….

Chip Somodevilla/Getty

In this next photo one can see how Sasha Obama’s pink and orange contrast beautifully with Malia’s royal blue. (Above, Sen. Hillary Clinton, and Jenna Bush.)

This story in Newsday gives more specifics on the girls’ outfits:

“Malia went for a double-breasted, deep periwinkle coat, while younger sis Sasha shone in a guava pink coat, contrasting orange scarf and gloves, with just the hint of a coral dress peeking from the below her hem. Both coats were tied with velvet ribbons, echoing the tie on Mom’s sparkly coat.”

The Obama girls were both in Crewcuts, from one of Michelle Obama’s favorite fashion outlets, J. Crew.  That same Newsday story sheds more light on how the selections were made:

“According to the company, Michelle and the girls had an opportunity to choose what they liked. “We wanted to offer a collection …that would let their own personalities show through,” said Jenna Lyons, creative director of J.Crew.”

One word of caution however: do NOT look for these pieces online or at your local J. Crew. The looks are from the Fall 2009 collection, and they are somewhat modified from what will be available to Jane and John Q. Public.  First Lady Michelle Obama did her part for J. Crew, wearing a pair of their leather gloves for the morning.

Next, the Isabel Toledo dress and matching coat:

As described on The Caucus blog at the Times,

“…the coat and dress were made of Swiss wool lace, backed with netting for warmth and lined in French silk. “I wanted to pick a very optimistic color, that had sunshine,” she said. “I wanted her to feel charmed, and in that way would charm everybody.”

Pool

PHOTO: Pool

As detailed in WWD’s initial story on the ensemble with reaction from the designer’s spouse:

“The soon-to-be First Lady did not tip her hand in any way. “We had no idea. We hoped she would wear something because she has bought Isabel’s clothes before. We never know what’s going to happen,” he said.

“It’s just another shock, but a great shock.”‘

Our favorite quote from the Toledos?

“We’re all grateful for this opportunity, and we don’t even have a PR person!”

Keep in mind, Ms. Toledo lost her job with Anne Klein earlier this year

And on Mrs. Obama’s feet? The Jimmy Choo Glacier pump, as seen below at DSW.

Jimmy Choo 'Glacier' Pump

Jimmy Choo 'Glacier' Pump

Readers thinking “Hhhmmm….hasn’t Mrs. Obama worn Isabel Toledo before?” get a pink and green star! As seen in this post in June of last year…

michelleobama5

..the look was an elegant tunic and palazzo pants. The occasion was a fundraiser on behalf of her husband put on by fashion industry leaders like the Anna Wintour and Calvin Klein.  In TP’s ever-so-humble opinion, the Toledo sheath and coat were just gorgeous, simply stunning on Mrs. Obama.  To our uneducated eyes however, the look was better suited to a semi-formal evening function.

So load up those poison pens angry people; we adore the design, love the color, and think both combined for a radiant First Lady.  We merely think the look better suited to a different occasion.  We are surprised at the volume of negative comments on the shape (or lack thereof apparently) of the coat, it seemed entirely in keeping with the refined flow of the dress underneath.

BTW, today’s pieces are not the only J. Crew fashions worn by the First Family during the festivities of the last several days. More on that in our next post…we’re off to see tonight’s gown for the Inaugural Balls! (We’re hearing Jason Wu… stand by formore!)

Obama Fashion & Prep School Updates, Worst Concealers Ever List

Hello-Hello on a busy Tuesday!

We start with an update to our initial story on the Obama school search.

The ongoing effort to find the best school for Malia and Sasha Obama moved to the next level yesterday when Michelle Obama took Malia and Sasha for a two-hour visit at Georgetown Day School.

Georgetown Day Lower School

Before you know it we may be seeing a run on these:

Today the girls and the next First Lady are expected to repeat that exercise at the Sidwell Friends campus.  Below, a photo from the Time magazine story that says Sidwell is the “…greenest school” in the United States.

David Burnett for TIME

PHOTO: David Burnett for TIME

Writer Margaret Carlson has an interesting perspective on the schools in her recent Bloomberg story.

“The car pool line at Sidwell runs to Mercedes and BMWs. At Maret, where journalists’ children abound, and at GDS, where students call teachers by their first names, you see more Volvos and Priuses. At Sidwell you might see a Palin Valentino. At Maret, Banana Republic.”

The article discusses Maret, a school we discussed very little in our previous post, as as we don’t believe it to be in serious consideration at this point.

The discussion continues regarding the dress Mrs. Obama wore for the 60 minutes interview that aired Sunday.

Many are suggesting it is another Maria Pinto design, primarily because of the color and lines. When we find out we will let you know.

And the Times has another story about the J. Crew ensemble the future First Lady wore for her Tonight Show appearance.

“A spokeswoman for the J. Crew Group said the company had no idea Mrs. Obama would wear J. Crew until it began seeing teasers of her “Tonight Show” appearance. But it moved quickly to capitalize on it.

Marketers bought “Michelle Obama” keywords on Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, built a page on the jcrew.com Web site that promoted her outfit, and told call-center representatives how to handle queries about Mrs. Obama’s fashion.”

For one of our previous posts with photos, descriptions of the pieces and links to those items at J. Crew, just click here.  BTW, J. Crew is now promoting a 25% off regular-priced Women’s shoes through tomorrow night.  The promo code is SHOESALE.

Ladies, you know we try to maintain proper etiquette standards here in our corner condo at Princess HQ, especially when it comes to issues of bloggage. Therefore TP is a tad timid; we fear we are treading dangerously close to the ‘poor taste’ line with our next topic: dark circles under one’s eyes. Does anyone else suffer from this wretched phenomenon?

The good folks at Total Beauty have a quick little slide show on the “Worst Concealers Ever” that is simply fascinating! We couldn’t not share the link with you! Please don’t think less of us, the UTP (Urge to Post) was overwhelming and we couldn’t help ourselves! We do feel better knowing we are not the only who struggles with this.

The iconic photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square is from V-J day in 1945.  Up top,  90-year-old Edith Shain is being held by actor Nick Mayo from the cast of South Pacific; she is one of several women who claim to be the nurse in the photo.  Ms. Shain is in the city to serve as Grand Marshal in tomorrow’s New York City Veterans Day parade.

Monday we saw the coral dress Maria Pinto hoped Michelle Obama would be wearing in Chicago on election night, as discussed in this post. The future First Lady wore it for today’s visit by the Obamas to the White House to see President and Mrs. Bush.

The dress was originally described by the designer to Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan for a piece in the Journal’sHeard on the Runway‘ blog:

“… a coral-red silk crepe sheath with three-quarter sleeves, an empire waist and a high neckline with a burst of sunray pleats emanating from the collar, is a piece that Ms. Obama bought a few months ago but hasn’t worn to an event yet….”

Above, Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Obama in the residential portion of the White House. And what about the designer for the gown the next First Lady will wear to all those Inaugural Balls the night of January 20th?  We still have no confirmation on the Cassandra Bromfield rumor, and as Ms. Pinto shared more recently with Ms. Tan:

“‘Barack gave me this huge hug and said, ‘You’re coming to D.C. with us!” says Ms. Pinto, whose brightly colored, tailored sheaths were spotted on Michelle Obama on the campaign trail.

As for whether she’ll to go Washington, D.C., the Chicago-based designer, who has seen sales spike 45% in the last 12 months, says there’s no question. “Hell, yeah!” she says. “I’m going anywhere they want me to go.”’

BTW, we do want to compliment Ms. Tan on her many ‘firsts’ on this continuing story; she knows her stuff.  Not a surprise, considering she was senior fashion writer for In Style magazine before moving to the Journal.

We seem to have a new term coined by our friends at Saks in their effort to help ease us through these challenging times. It is ‘Chic-onomics 101’ or more accurately, at least in our vernacular: Investment Bags. (And it appears from this that Saks isn’t the first to use this term, not by a long shot.)

A reminder: the Saks sale now online is available at all the stores as of tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 11.

More later!

Election Night Fashions from Michelle Obama, Cindy McCain, Sarah Palin and More

Hello-hello everyone! We hope everyone is enjoying the soft and sunny weather we are experiencing today!

As we are more than a little swamped here at Princess HQ, we will offer a short post looking at the Narciso Rodriguez dress worn by Michelle Obama Monday evening.

Timothy A. Clary/AFP/Getty

Timothy A. Clary/AFP/Getty

Clearly not a Mario Pinto creation, as discussed in last night’s post, this was shown as part of the Rodriguez Spring 2009 Collection.

The selection of this particular dress and cardigan brought some negative fashion feedback, unusual in and of itself as Mrs. Obama has been credited throughout the campaign for her fashion-forward style.

The issue? This is not considered a “good TV dress.”

While TP is convinced this is a stunning dress in person, it was probably not Ms. Obama’s finest fashion moment.  The ombre dot motif is exquisite in design and tres figure-enhancing but it doesn’t stand up well on television and in photographs.  And yes, the broadcasting & print careers influence our thought process on this topic, no doubt about it.

However, we think the First-Lady-To-Be is entitled to wear whatever strikes her fancy, whatever makes her feel good.  And no one can say the family was not color-coordinated last evening.

For those unfamiliar with Mr. Rodriguez, here is a look at one of his more memorable gowns, Carolyn Bissette Kennedy’s wedding dress.

NOTE: The following portion of the blog is INCORRECT!

Here is the CORRECT info: Below, a photo of the dress worn by Cindy McCain at the convention on September 1st. (Okay Princess, dress vs. suit…. how difficult can this be?! Perhaps it is time for a little Prozac pick-me-up, hhhmm?)

Thank you to the wonderful MOMX2 for alerting us in her ever-so-kind manner that we had a boo-boo in today’s post. She is too sweet and if you haven’t been over for a visit, you must reward yourself and pop in to say ‘hello.’

Now we must start our hunt for the designer behind last night’s Cindy McCain fashion; we still think we have seen this particular suit before, which is the thought process that started us on this slippery slope in the first place. But before we can do that, we must toddle along to our Tiara repair expert. We need to bring down the size of our Tiara a tad, as our head has shrunk just a bit in the last few hours. Silly Princess.

(Editor’s Note: We are leaving in our mistake deliberately to avoid any confusion we would create by simply correcting this in the ‘comments’ section.)

Back to your regularly scheduled programing now:

We must include this photo of a rather woebegone Piper Palin last night, as she has definitely been one of those little delights that always brought a smile to our face during the long campaign…

…as did Malia and Sasha Obama, no doubt thrilled to know they are getting the new puppy they were promised if their father was victorious in the election.

For those interested in a possible Inauguration Day look for Ms. Obama, last night’s late post touched upon that and also shared Oprah Winfrey’s plans for an Inauguration Day dress.

We close with a look at how the story was played elsewhere, starting with one of the President-elect’s hometown newspapers, the Chicago Sun-Times:

U.S. Open and Convention Styles, La Wintour and Martha do Queens, People Magazine Covers

Hello-hello and happy late Monday evening, at least here on the east coast it is ‘late’ at 9pm EDT, what we used to refer to as ‘civilized time’ back when we lived on the west coast. BTW, that term makes absolutely no one happy, is meant to offend no one, but manages to upset just about everyone, so we don’t use it very often for precisely those reasons.

Are you ready for some tennis? We most assuredly are, much more eager to partake of this than politics, we must admit. We’ll start with the weekend’s runup to the US Open, the annual Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and here are a few quick hits of the happenings. What fun to see US Olympic Swimming Gold Medalist Cullen Jones with Ana Ivanovic on the left (photo by Jennifer Pottheiser) and then the one that has us wishing we were a fly on the grandstand… or something like that, Rafa and Roger, just a couple of guys on the job. Chatting. About guy stuff. You know.

And how about those immense, oversized tennis balls they had for the event? They looked very cool.

And parties, oh yes, there have been parties! On the left a photo from Heineken’s Player Party; it wouldn’t be the Open without pictures of Maria, even if she isn’t playing. Or even staying.

La Sharapova has let it be known that she would like (very much so if you please) to attend the Vera Wang and the Peter Som shows at Fashion Week. And the houses would be insane not to invite her, she is stunning and generates great publicity. But no, she had no intention of attending, or watching, or anything really to do with the Open. As she told the NY Observer, “To be honest, the day I got injured was the day that I was like, I’m not even sure who’s playing.” To be honest, if that was how we earned our living, we’re not sure how interested we would be either, although we might make an effort to be a tad more diplomatic in letting people know of our diminished interest.

Then there was the Nike store opening party in Soho, attracting athletes, entertainers, sports stars of the non-athletic nature, Hollywood types, you name it and they might have been there. (And even if they weren’t, they may still say they were.) It had to be fun just to see Spike Lee and Roger Federer almost looking like buddies. BTW, Spike said he would be at the Open almost every day, but at last sighting he was in Denver at The Convention, but then, there is a lot of Open left to be played.

Patrick McMullan

Photo: Patrick McMullan

On the left, Roger & Serena at the Nike store opening party. Originally scheduled to open on 8.8.08 to coincide with the Olympics getting underway, that didn’t happen, nor did it seem to matter.

This is not just your run of the mill Nike store, but a Nike Sportswear store, and evidently there is a big difference. According to the media info from Nike, “The stand-alone shop will be the only location globally to carry the complete NSW collection and seasonal 21 Mercer products.” (The store is on Mercer Street.) That sounds quite impressive.

There were other parties in the city over the weekend. Men’s Vogue did the cool thing and hosted a fundraiser for James Blake to benefit the Thomas Blake Sr. Memorial Research Fund. Below left, Blake and Jay Fielden, the Arts Editor at Men’s Vogue’s, and below right, musician John Mayer, trying on watches at the party. Perhaps he can find one telling him it’s time to take his meds…yes? (Good idea? Or bad, bad Princess?)

Everything did get going today, and yes, there was tennis played. But tonight was the more formal kickoff with Mayor Bloomberg and lots of festivities as it is the 40th Anniversary of the Open.

And yes, Anna and Martha were in the house, Forest Whitaker was at the podium….

And when everything was kicked off by Mayor Bloomberg, one thing TP loved was the beauty shot that shows the Unisphere. You see, we have special memories of that Unisphere… we were very, very little, but we have special memories of that beautiful globe.

Much as there are so many other great players and matches, and yesofcourse we are going to watch as many as we can, it comes down to one thing: Roger and Rafa. The preppy vs. the Pirate. We loved the way Will Leitch (whom we absolutely adore) wrote about the whole thing in a post on the Magazine’s website:

“He beat Federer in the French Open for the third straight year, won that Wimbledon, took over his No. 1 world ranking, and, for good measure, won a gold medal in Beijing. Meanwhile, Federer was looking more mortal than ever. Not only was Nadal beating him on a non-clay court (finally): Federer lost to James-freaking-Blake in the Olympics.

Theoretically speaking, if there were ever a time to remind the world that he’s Roger Federer, dammit, this would be it; Wimbledon has the tradition, but the U.S. Open is where stars are made.”

Okay…enough tennis and now onto the next topic….

Our email just ‘pinged’ indicating something new just hit the electronic in-box. It turns out to be an “urgent,” or ‘news alert’ from Women’s Wear Daily on what Michelle Obama will be wearing tonight when she addresses the convention, and word is that it will be Maria Pinto again, the Chicago-based designer Ms. Obama has favored previously.

According to WWD, the word is that The Dress, and yes, we think it deserves to be in caps as a proper title of something, will be:

“Pinto said the dress Obama is planning to wear is a turquoise blue, three-quarter-sleeve sheath-like, fitted, Fifties-inspired style in double-faced wool. But, as like any woman, Obama could change her mind at the last minute.”

You may recognize the first high-profile Pinto dress worn by Ms. Obama from June 3, the night the Senator claimed victory in the race for the Democratic nomination.

Jason Reed/Reuters
Photo: Jason Reed/Reuters

And one of our favorite quotes from Michelle Obama?

“I have some high-end stuff – I work with a great designer in Chicago, Maria Pinto – but I got this dress at this store that it’s all black and white stuff … You put a little pin on it and you’ve got something going on.”

That kind of showed TP something when it came to the potential First Lady and where her head is when it comes to fashion. Not everyone needs to be as relentlessly obsessed even moderately interested, as we are. Here are a couple more Pinto pixs, things we love from the designer’s Fall 08 Accessory line, both pieces far more suited to a winter Bridal event than anything TP would be wearing, but so lovely we had to share them.

Now since we’re all (well, okay, not all) thinking conventions and politics, we thought we would update things for everyone who’s been awake at night wondering how Angelina Jolie is leaning, compliments of a story for Daily Variety:

“In June, when Entertainment Weekly asked her whether she talked politics with Clint Eastwood, a longtime Republican, on the set of the upcoming movie, “The Changeling,” she said, “Actually, we don’t disagree as much as you’d think. I think people assume I’m a Democrat. But I’m registered independent and I’m still undecided. So I’m looking at McCain as well as Obama.”

Moloshok/Landov; Kempin/FilmMagic; Reed/Landov

Jolie’s father, Jon Voight, has endorsed McCain and recently wrote an op-ed for the Washington Times highly critical of Obama.

Reports tonight from various sources that two mega-acts will be rocking and rolling in Denver come Thursday night for Senator Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at the convention. The Rocky Mountain News reports:

“The Jersey boys are coming, and we ain’t talking about Frankie Valli. The Boss and Bon Jovi are ready to perform.

Multiple sources confirmed to the Rocky that Jon Bon Jovi will fly in to perform two acoustic songs before Sen. Barack Obama gives his acceptance speech at Invesco Field on Thursday. After the speech, Bruce Springsteen (photo at left) will close out the night, presumably solo acoustic (E Street Band member Nils Lofgren told the Rocky last week that the band wouldn’t be with Springsteen in Denver).”

The Princess called Denver home for more than 17 years, and has sources *but everywhere* telling her all about the goings-on, the galas and get-togethers, the parties and premieres, the meetings-made- to-look-like-parties and the security. Oh my. The. Security. Ohmygoodnessitiseverywheresecurity.

And she thought she had dealt with security. You know, the White House type, the military type, the Papal visit type, the run of the mill disaster type. Not. At. All. A few years out of the business and it is really quite a far more serious and in many respects, a somewhat ugly business now, where the worst must be thought of everyone in order to protect the someones and the everyones. We aren’t sorry to be out of that fray and watching it from home for a change, we must admit.

It’s time for a little update on the People cover featuring Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and their twins. The Princess mistakenly thought perhaps people were bored to tears by all the Brad and Angelina baby hoo-hah and media circus, and might elect not to invest in the magazine’s ‘Special Double Issue‘ featuring the twins or the Hello magazine issue, should you be on the other side of the pond. Silly, silly Princess. What was she thinking?!

It turns out this was the biggest seller in seven years, the fourth biggest seller of all time! So there, Miss Princess! Only issues covering Sept. 11th, Princess Diana’s death and John F. Kennedy Jr.’s death sold more at the newsstand. It’s interesting that death seems to push us toward purchasing People magazine. I wonder if it does the same for other newsweeklies, or other ‘celebrity/personality driven’ titles?
