J. Crew Spring 2011 Preview, Gala at Ralph Lauren

Hello-Hello, and welcome to an almost-weekend, isn’t it awful we’re thinking that and it’s only midday?

The crush of business mandates a shorter-than-normal post today, so we jump right in with a very quick glance at J. Crew‘s Spring 2011 Collections, previewed last night for the media.

Via Shawn Punch/Examiner.com

On an up note, there are lots of bright, bold colors. On a less-than-up note, there seems to be an abundance of sequins and other not-so-preptastic embellishments.

Glamour has images of the line (above), as does Habitually Chic (below).

Here is a closer look at the sequin cutout piece above.

Via Thread NY/NBC

We think it unlikely many of our cherished readers will be making mad plans to purchase the piece shown above.

The next two styles come via Jim Shi’s Plixi photo feed.

This may surprise you, but the studded sweater above isn’t destined for the walk-in. We leave the topic for now with these two images from Habitually Chic.

Women’s Wear Daily (subscription) has a look at the men’s line today; we expect they’ll have photos from the womenswear up Monday and we’ll share them with you.

To see more images from the women’s collection for next spring we suggest the Examiner story, Glamour, or Habitually Chic. For more on the men’s line, we recommend Selectism or Bold on the Street.  To view the Thread NY “Behind the Scenes with Jenna Lyons” story, click here.

Ms. Lyons’ influence is evident throughout the spring collection; below, the executive attending this week’s Accessories Excellence awards.

We expect to have better shots of the women’s Spring 2011 collection next Monday.

A quick social note, the new Ralph Lauren women’s shop was the setting for last night’s big do celebrating Gloria Vanderbilt’s new book.

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty

The World Of Gloria Vanderbilt” was published this week; WWD has more on the party.

“Suitably, Lauren’s first major party there — to celebrate Gloria Vanderbilt and the new book — felt a lot like the salon gatherings of the days of yore, drawing a mix of people from fashion, Hollywood, society and politics.

Also attending, Lauren Bush, as well as Andrew Lauren.

Ms. Vanderbilt’s son, newscaster Anderson Cooper was on hand, as well as actress Uma Thurman.

A final note, we are excited to share the most recent addition to our Preppy Paper line,

The Dittie Notepads are from our friends at Donovan Designs, above we show varying Madras Plaid designs, but there are loads to choose from, some are preprinted, like the Lunch Box Notes and Note to School pads.

Others are blank, like the Flower Notepads and the Diamond Notepads.

A.P.C. Madras Collection, Target’s Online Only Nautical Fabulosity

Hello-Hello and Happy Almost Weekend! Yippee! The sun and warmer temperatures have never felt better, and we hope to finish our work in time to be outside enjoying the springy weather.

At the risk of violating personal TMI standards, we share the following only because we must apologize for yesterday’s hideous post. Our only excuse? We were coping with another one of these:

Fortunately it has departed, and we are now merely dealing with the daily frenzy that is standard here at the Prepatorium. And we must tell you, we are simply awash in new merchandise! While it is loads of fun, it can also be borderline overwhelming, or as GAM (Great Aunt Molly) might say, my goodness-gracious-sakes-alive! (We promise, we will share one of the new items in a bit, from a great new line that we are ever-so-excited about!)

Now, many readers may already be aware of this tidbit, but if not, we bring good news – TheOutnet.com is online and open for business!

TheOutnet.com

TheOutnet.com

Created by Natalie Massenet, founder of Net-a-Porter, the new site “…will offer previous-season items from more than 200 designers, with steep discounts of up to as much as 80 percent…” In fact, we’ll use a couple of Outnet items for today’s Pretty in Pink.  For your perusal on the left: the Milly Dress (originally $355, now $177.50), and on the right, Chloé’s Ines Clutch (originally $1380, now $690).

New merchandise is scheduled to hit the site every Tuesday and Thursday – happy hunting!

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, our thanks to the always-on-top-of-things High Snobiety for tipping us to the new Madras Collection at A.P.C.

Once again the line offers outstanding choices with clean lines and .

The entire collection is made in India, and is top-notch in terms of quality.

Just another reason we are grateful that A.P.C. ships to the US!

For madras that inflicts a tad less damage to one’s pocketbook, we turn to our good friends at Target. Below, the Merona® Patchwork Madras Skirt in blue, now offered at $19.99.

Also in plaid at Target, the Women’s Zulima Plaid Rain Boots are a great value at only $24.99.

They look like a lot of fun, oui?

Yesterday we shared a few of the nautically-inclined treasures we discovered online, but did not get  anywhere close to posting them all. Next, this Anchor Necklace from the fine design minds at Giles and Brother.

Giles & Brother

We are guessing the one and only Nautical by Nature is well aware of our next item, Target’s Nautical Shaped Plate Set.

Target

Target

Initially we thought these would be melamine, but upon reading the description discovered they are actually earthenware; they are also dishwasher-safe.

This next line is so delightful we are tempted to add it to our china closet. Seriously. The Nantucket Cocktail Plates are only available online, and at only $19.99 for the set, we are guessing the set of 4 porcelain plates will go quickly.

In fact, that plate set just might qualify as Prepalicious. What do you think dolls…is it out of this world enough?

Our final nautical item also hails from the Boutique (Target); we offer the Nantucket Floating Whale Salt & Pepper.

A word of caution: don’t look for this item in stores either as it is another online only item.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

We promised to share an item from our new line; below, the Personal Size Boat Tote.

Boat Totes at PreppyPrincess.com

Boat Totes at PreppyPrincess.com

At 12″ x 9″ x 5″ these are an excellent size. One feature we really liked when initially considering them was the detachable matching strap one can use to convert the tote to a shoulder bag, a bit of versatility we thought was a nice addition to make this just a step above the basic tote. These are heavy cotton canvas that can really take a beating, equipped with a zip top to safely keep things inside, another plus as ‘handbag mishaps’ are not unheard of for TP.

Best of all? We managed to price the bags at only $15. This is the smallest of the sizes we are carrying, thus the ‘Personal Size’ moniker; we promise the larger size bags will be equally outstanding values. We are proud of the fact we have found a way to offer our totes at prices that are better than those of the two big guys! (You know who we mean.)

With that, we are off and out the door, sending smiles your way and hopes your weekends are spectacular!

On the topic of Inaugural fashion, the LA Times raises a question about the propriety of a First Lady borrowing jewelry, in relation to these $17,000 Loree Rodkin earrings.

LoreeRodkin.com

Michelle Obama wore the sparklers to Sunday’s concert.

PHOTO: Jewel Samad/AFP/Getty

(Frankly, TP is far more fascinated by the Narciso Rodriguez ensemble in camel and black, really quite elegant IOHO.)  The paper’s All the Rage blog cites rules about borrowed apparel and accessories set up when Ronald Reagan was President in the 1980s, and Mrs. Reagan was chided for her frequent borrowing of designer clothes.

“Michelle Obama wore $17,000 diamond chandelier earrings designed by Loree Rodkin to the “We Are One” concert on Sunday — not a gift from her husband, but borrowed from a Chicago retailer. The next morning, dispatches were dutifully sent out from the publicist for Rodkin to let the press know whom to credit for her ear candy. How very red carpet.”

Yikes… that seems a little cranky, no? We presume All the Rage would apply the same question to Tuesday night’s jewelry, a healthy 77.6 carats in diamonds, again, borrowed from Loree Rodkin. (Mrs. Obama is seen with U.S. Army Sgt. Margaret H. Herrera following her dance with President Obama.)

Gary Hershorn/Reuters

PHOTO: Gary Hershorn/Reuters

The Arizona Republic has a little more information on the bling (that is the proper term…yes?) in this story:

“Curious about costs, we called Moody Blues boutique in Scottsdale, which carries Loree Rodkin jewelry. There, a chain necklace with a cross pendant covered in an estimated 3 carats of diamonds is $21,000, says Catie Cerutti, store manager.

We’d hate to draw any cost-per-carat conclusions based on that, but . . . oh, who are we kidding. Our math shows that Obama could have been wearing $543,200 worth of diamonds.”

There you have it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now, if you are interested in sporting a knock-off of the First Lady’s Jason Wu gown, eDressMe has one available. Really.

eDressMe.com

eDressMe.com

We have an answer to our question Is Jason Wu Preppy?, asked in this post: absolutely.  Without question. According to Eric Wilson’s story in today’s Times, he attended Loomis, a not-very-well-know Connecticut boarding school.

We credit the Consort for the sharp eye on this – he is such a Fashionisto. (The male version of Fashionista…hello?)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And in our “The Princess wasn’t Born Yesterday” category, we pose a question: is it possible that the “Marvelous Malia” and “Sweet Sasha” dolls pictured below have absolutely no connection whatsoever to the little girls who just moved into the White House?!

Scott Olson/Getty

PHOTO: Scott Olson/Getty

That’s what the folks at Ty say; they just released the dolls for sale, and controversy  about the TyGirlz dolls is growing. An Associated Press story explains the “coincidence”:

“The Oak Brook-based company chose the names because ‘they are beautiful names,’ not because of any resemblance to Malia and Sasha Obama, said spokeswoman Tania Lundeen.”

“‘There’s nothing on the dolls that refers to the Obama girls,’ Lundeen said. ‘It would not be fair to say they are exact replications of these girls.

Oh.  Silly Princess.

However – let it be said that at least the moronic company (really, this is PR Debacle 101 level stuff) put a little madras on the dolls’ cuffs and one pair of sneakers.

The Olympic It Bag, Shoshanna, Ralph Lauren Rugby Update, Sale Updates: J. Crew, Saks, Barneys, Boden

Hello-hello and happy Wednesday!

Because we have dabbled in the Olympic Fashion world for a few days, we thought it best to step away from the Olympic uniforms and look at some of the additional items being marketed as tie-ins to the Beijing Summer Games. We finally came across some photographs of a bag we’ve been reading about for some time; the PUMA Olympic “It bag.”

Might we also add that hunting up the PUMA bags for this column was an eye-opening experience, albeit a tad mind-warping. As we don’t generally spend time blazing new fashion trails, we had *no* idea that the selection of bags PUMA offers is so broad! Heavens to Betsy! Below, the PUMA Olympic Ring Bag.

Below are bags that also won recognition in this year’s CSM (Central St. Martin) Design competition sponsored by PUMA, including the Medallion Bag designed by George Omerod in either Gold or Silver, as well as the CSM Elastic Ring Bag. The Princess applauds PUMA for supporting young, independent designers, but is somehow not in sync with the medallion bags. At all.

If you would like to read and see more on Olympic fashions and design, Forbes Life has an interesting story and along with one of their wonderful slide shows.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many readers are familiar with The Princess’s disdain for inappropriate emotional displays, yet they have been witness to her inability to contain herself upon seeing the madras plaid swim separates by Shoshanna. It was dreadful, we were absolutely gaga and completely out of control, incapable of containing ourselves. (Below, the ever-so-preppy madras swim top at Nordstrom.)

In reality, there is little from this designer that we don’t like, as her lines are simple, the cut is classic and the end result is always one that is sure to flatter every figure. In many ways it is a ‘preppy’ design aesthetic.

To the right of the swimsuit above, the Mosaic Belted Dress at Saks in a bright and brilliant shade of blue. (A quick FYI if you are still looking for swimwear, all of the Shoshanna swimwear separates are on sale at ShopBop, and there is an additional 20% off the sale prices.)

If you like Shoshanna’s designs you’ll want to pop over to Ronda Carman’s fabulous blog, “All the Best” for her profile of designer Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss (below).

Learn which handbag she carries the most, her favorite luxury in life and who her style icons are, plus you can become acquainted with the blog, a daily read for us here at the Prepatorium.

We also adore the Shoshanna Tuxedo Halter Dress at Nordstrom, with its cutaway top and pleated waist, and simply love the Stretch Jersey Cap Sleeve dress at Bluefly, despite the fuzzy-wuzzy photo.

Scoot over to Ronda’s when you have a minute to get a peek at the person behind the Shoshanna designs and meet Ronda, well worth the trip itself!

An update on last week’s post mentioning the upgrades being done to the Ralph Lauren Rugby website, including the added enhancement of being able to shop online at the site. The site is now open for business and you can actually shop the Rugby styles online!

Once again TP feels compelled to tiptoe around the issue of m****, a topic you know that we never discuss, certainly not in a public forum such as this. However, there are times when economics mandate that one does what they can to pinch a penny or two along the way to livin’ the Prepalicious! lifel And TP is here to help, forever seeking measures and means to keep your pocketbook healthy and happy. (You know what a horrid chore it can be when you are forced to call up one of the Trustees and detail your plight.)

It is in this vein we always suggest the ‘Buy Ahead’ method for supplementing one’s wardrobe, acquiring pieces now that will be simply divine in the future. You know the basic boys button-down at Hickey-Freeman that is on sale now is ideal for this fall and winter, and no one knows what season it is because it’s a classic item made with superb materials and craftsmanship. Or the vibrant (that is an understatement) plaid sportcoat Thurston will wear to this fall’s holiday ‘do,’ similar to this Holiday Plaid Style on sale at Hickey Freeman.

Hickey Freeman Men's Holiday Plaid Sportcoat (on sale)

Hickey Freeman Men's Holiday Plaid Sportcoat

And don’t forget the edgier Hickey store, with goods aimed toward a younger and hipper clientele than those at parent store Hickey Freeman. They too have some fabulous men’s merchandise at outstanding price points, especially since they added ‘Take an Additional 20% off” to the deal. We are particularly fond of this Linen/Cotton Blend Chambray Shirt, a basic that will last forever. We are, of course, completely and totally ignoring those shameful buttons (gasp!) and the little leaf logo.

Hickey Linen/Cotton Blend Chambray Shirt

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Naturally there are loads of treasures at the J. Crew Final Sale that are simply perfect for everyone, but do be sure to check the markdowns on everything.

For example, the Cambridge cable crewneck sweater, a ‘must have’ basic available in loads of colors normally runs $74. It is now $69.50, not much of a markdown.

We are pretty excited about the Men’s Broken-in Madras Sneakers, now only $19.99, still available in a good range of sizes in both the Tidal Blue or the Montauk Patchwork.

Even getting the little ones properly clad for school can be accomplished in some cases at this sale! Probably not in the school days category, but still fabulous: these Callie Flats for the little princess in the family.

There is always the GIrls’ Polished Cotton Polo at $6.99, with lots of colors to choose from, or maybe the Girls’ Cashmere Argyle Cardigan, doesn’t that look elegant, yet über-snuggly for the Little Miss?

For the young master, how can you go wrong with a silk Lighthouse Tie that was $29.50, now $7.99, or the East Hampton polo shirt?

BTW, we’re just tickled that *finally* the New J. Crew store opened at the Galleria in Dallas. Only one store in a town that size was just silly.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

One wouldn’t want to pass up the Summer Sale at their local Saks, or the online store with all manner of things marked down, including this Stephen Dweck Bronze Ring. There are other treasures like the classic St. John Sport Boatneck Stripe Sweater in a timeless wool and rayon knit you will wear for years (not shown). The Princess is also partial to the Ann Demeulemeester Suede Sneakers in black.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

At Boden things are not discounted anywhere near the amounts shown above, but the there are savings to be had just the same, if you enjoy the company’s casual classics.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Now don’t forget to stop by Barney’s Sale online, unless you’re in the city in which case it would be criminal to not get yourself to the physical warehouse sale. Already underway in LA, the online sale features deep markdowns and runs through the 26th, while the warehouse sale has even better markdowns, and you get the experience of someone ripping that top you were just looking at right out of your hands! The physical warehouse sale goes through the 1st of September.

And on that crazy note, the Princess will toddle off for a nightcap and some Olympics viewing!

The Preppy Placemat™ (or “Fair Warning”)

The Preppy Placemat, Navy Madras

The Preppy Placemat, Navy Madras The Preppy Placemat, Navy Madras

No doubt you have experienced the excitement of an auction at Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Doyle, or other fine establishments. (BTW, do peek below for a great Doyle tidbit.) At auction houses “Fair Warning” is a signal advising that if you really want that strand of Mikimoto pearls for Bitsy’s wedding in June, you’d better bid. Like now. Well, that’s sort of what The Princess is saying. Consider this today’s Fair Warning: we’re absolutely gaga over the new Preppy Placemat™ and probably in danger of displaying an inappropriate emotional response in our excitement!

We are way over the top in elation the place mats finally arrived; we’re also jazzed at how cool they turned out! Yes! Today’s pictures are from the Make Mine Madras and Tradition stripe collections.

Preppy Placemat™ Tradition Fancy Stripes & Little Flowers

pmatsredwhtblucu.jpg

These truly make a fab style statement while also displaying a split personality that everyone will appreciate – they are reversible! So they dress up both your dining room and kitchen tables, stretching your decorating dollar a bit more. (And really, aren’t we all positioned to consider little economies here and there when we stumble over them?) Naturellement, the placemats are 100% cotton and the madras is a Princess exclusive: the fabric was made especially for us in India, it is a pattern you won’t see anywhere else. There are others in the collection as well as matching and coordinating napkins. We will showcase some of the them in the next few days, but simply had to get these two up right away to share with you as we consider them to be very Princess and most Prepalicious! BTW, we were so troubled by confusion over the correct spelling of the place mat word we actually consulted Webster’s online dictionary only to learn both spellings are acceptable.
Ooops, almost forgot our Doyle update! They have the most divine jewelry auction scheduled for the 15th with pieces by Harry Winston, Tiffany’s, and Cartier. If you aren’t in the city on the 15th, not to worry: you can always bid by internet or phone. Time to fly, a League meeting awaits!
