Fore, Please. The Consort Steps To The Teebox and Swings Away

Hello-hello, all.  The Consort here striding confidently to the microphone to amuse and confuse you while The (lovely and very talented) Princess deals with her commitments to the community.  Now that the temperature is climbing my thoughts are turning to golf.  To be more precise, golf fashion and a dash of fun.  Ready?  I believe we are up on the tee.

Let’s begin with some golf fashions that have caught my eye recently.

Photo: Maide Golf

Maide Golf is rolling out a great line of pants, shirts and more.  You’ve likely heard of their parent company Bonobos.  The pants come in a variety of colors and the attention to detail is exciting.  I’m loving the 2″ zipper on the hem to allow you to adjust the break of the pants on your shoes.  Nice touch.  Next time you have a spare minute give them a look and envision yourself sporting those clean lines the next time you step to the tee.

Or you could make a bolder statement with our friends from Loudmouth Golf.  You’ve no doubt seen their memorable patterns for pants, shorts, shirts and accessories.  Here’s one of the new looks for this season:

Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 2.56.15 PM

This is the “Dropcloth” pattern but I imagine you figured that out for yourself.  They have a wide variety of patterns with a price tag for pants of around $100.  Go ahead and let the world know you have confidence in your game.

When I was younger we all believed there would be flying cars in our garages by the year 2000.  We’re not quite there yet but pro golfer and Masters Champion Bubba Watson might be taking us closer to that reality.

Bubba Watson's Hovercraft

Bubba and Oakley have reportedly created a hovercraft golf cart that might just usher in the next great age of golf cart racing.  Is it for real?  It seems to work in the video.  All I know is that this hovercraft might be just what I need to lower my handicap a few strokes.  The cost?  Who cares?  It’s a HOVERCRAFT GOLF CART!

It’s time to wrap this up for the day.  The Princess will be back here next time  with information you can actually use.  Until then remember to take care of your waitperson tonight because they’re working hard for you.  Good night, my friends!

Ralph Lauren Olympic Uniforms Unveiled, Adventures in Argyle

We are more than ready for a day’s dose of Friday Fun, we thought we would start with the Team USA Olympic uniforms unveiled this week.

Ralph Lauren Courtesy Photos

We have already seen what Olympic and Paralympic team members will wear in the Olympic Village, but these are for the dressier closing ceremonies, not quite as formal as the Opening Ceremonies, but a notch above the Village uniforms. Here is how the Ralph Lauren designs are described at BlackBook:
…the American fashion designer opted for crisp monochromatic white in breezy silhouettes that would work just as well in the Hamptons.

For women, the look features a white button-down with both the team and classic RL Big Pony logos on the chest, paired with a flowing midi skirt cinched with a striped belt. Men will wear a cotton shirt emblazoned with the aforementioned logos, along with white pleated slacks fastened by a striped silk belt. Dapper.

Dapper is a good descriptor.

Above you see more of the Ralph Lauren styles on Team USA athletes, the group was on the Today show yesterday as part of the Road to London celebration, the closing ceremony uniforms can be seen on the far right.

Below, a better look at the just-unveiled styles. The term “Gatsbyesque” also comes to mind.

Here is how Vanity Fair described the look:

Wonderful news for sports fans, sartorial enthusiasts, and those elegant and careful enough for white clothing: Ralph Lauren, official outfitter of the 2012 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic team attire, unveiled sketches of this summer’s closing ceremony ensembles for the London Games.

They’re comprised of “luxe white cotton sport shirts” and a skirt/pleated white trousers, each held up with a necktie-silk “sporty repp-stripe” belt in red, white, and blue, and paired with matching scarf (unseen) tied at the neck, according to the fashion house.

As a refresher, here is what athletes, coaches and other Team members will wear in the Olympic Village.

Some may remember the 2008 uniforms for both the opening and closing ceremonies, we showcased them in this post.

Coincidentally (cough-cough), Ralph Lauren launched its direct-to-consumer marketing of the Olympic merchandise yesterday  As much as yours truly engages in whineathons of epic proportions on the topic of Mr. Lauren’s logo occasionally chides the company, we must admit some of the styles are wonderful. In particular, this one is sure to peak the Cute-o-Meter in the red zone.

Polo Ralph Lauren Infant Tank Dress

That is the Olympic Tank Dress for Infants, and it couldn’t be any more darling. How precious is that hat? (Sadly, it does not come with the dress.)

There are official Team USA items in almost every merchandise category, we will take a more in-depth look at the offerings at some point in the future. We’ll leave the topic for now with the Polo Ralph Lauren limited edition pins.

Polo Ralph Lauren

All three pin styles are available now, they are $10. There is a nifty 1-minute video on the Polo Ralph Lauren site as well, if feeling a little blasé about the upcoming events, this will get your blood moving.

We share another sports-themed tidbit, this one involving golf apparel.

Loudmouth Golf

If guessing Loudmouth Golf, you are correct. We hadn’t shared any of their looks lately (speaking of Olympics, remember these Loudmouth pants on the Norwegian men?!), and thought these would definitely qualify as an Adventure in Argyle.

Some may remember the brand hurtling into the limelight when worn by golfer John Daly, the line has certainly expanded since Mr. Daly was first spotted in the company’s blinding vivid apparel.

Loudmouth Golf

Below we see Mr. Daly and other Loudmouth fans in Augusta at the Masters just a few weeks ago. (To see an amazing story about seven Swiss golfers who love Loudmouth *and* the Masters, click here to visit the Augusta Chronicle’s story on the Flying Swiss Golfers’ Club.)

Via Loudmouth Golf Facebook Page

In fact, Loudmouth actually has an Olympic presence, below we see Team USA athlete Steven “SteveO” VanderWerp at yesterday’s Road to London event, he is in a Loudmouth hoodie.

Loudmouth Golf Facebook Page

It has been such a long time since we visited the Loudmouth site, we didn’t realize they were now making Kids’ clothing for the course.

There are Boys and Girls choices for those interested in a… well, let’s just say those interested in making a vibrant style statement.

Finally today, we leave you with something near and dear to our iceberg of a heart.

The Prepatorium

That is Silly Tilly on the left and Tiny Tilly (there’s a word we’ve never used in relationship to Tilly before) on the right, an amazing gift from a dear friend.  The remarkable likeness was created by gifted artisan and sculptor David Lynn of Nova Blue Studio Arts, LLC (or here on Facebook).

Mr. Lynn outdid himself on the details, they are perfect, right down to Tilly’s pink and green harness. (He worked from photos our friend provided him.)

Tilly’s Mini Me

While this has nary a link to anything preppish, it does put a smile on our face, we thought it fit under the Friday Fun umbrella. (And we thought it might make you smile too.)

Have a splendid weekend!

Fashion Week: Trina Turk, True Prep Party at Brooks Brothers

Hello-Hello, welcome to a Wednesday!

We have more Fashion Week goings-on to share, beginning with last night’s bash, the Brooks Brothers True Prep party.

Via True Prep Facebook

The festivities were at the Brooks mother ship on Madison, above, one of the theme windows.  The gala drew a big crowd,  as explained by Los Angeles Times writer Adam Tschorn in his blog post on the event:

“…the night’s stack of books had dwindled from 400 to just three in less than an hour, according to our madras-clad mole.”

Authors Lisa Birnbach and Chip Kidd were on hand, madly signing books and looking well, preppish in Mr. Tschorn’s photos.

PHOTOS: Adam Tschorn

Again, he describes the scene:

“The enthusiastic crowd took the opportunity to don its preppiest threads. As we arrived a a clutch of young girls in pink Lilly Pulitzer patterns spilled out the door, and, once amid the sea of Sperry Top-Siders, all-over embroidered trousers and navy-blue blazers made us feel like we’d fallen into our own version of “The Hot Tub Time Machine.”

For those recognizing Mr. Tschorn’s name, we have previously quoted from his stories in the Times, as well as his blog posts; he does a splendid job covering fashion and culture. It sounds like the True Prep special edition at Brooks Brothers (previously mentioned in this post) was quite the popular item. To read Mr. Tschorn’s piece in its entirety click here; it will make you smile.

The scene is likely to be similar this evening at the Vineyard Vines party in Georgetown.  That function gets underway at 6pm, showcasing not only the book and Ms. Birnbach, but also six new True Prep products.  We have previously shown the Vines tie featuring the book cover’s Golden Retriever, Henry; that pattern is also used on the new Vines True Prep tote.

Look for a fleece vest and several other co-branded items.

Back to Fashion Week runway shows, a speedy glance at a label we love, Mulberry. We rarely feature apparel, generally we’re gushing chatting about the company’s handbags; here are a few styles from WWD’s brief review.

Any company willing to put a pooch in a picture or two will grab our attention; the photos are all by Pasha Antonov via WWD.

Nothing to make us gaga, but some lovely prints and stellar bags.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Showing for the first time  in New York, a Princess fave, Trina Turk.  Some pieces were simply outstanding, with vibrant prints in rich, saturated colors.

This also held true for the menswear, making us wonder if this is what a marriage of Lilly Pulitzer and Loudmouth Golf might produce…?

As always, Ms. Turk presents some solid basics as well as pieces for fun and sun.

From the Women’s Wear Daily review:

“Trina Turk celebrated her 15th anniversary with her first New York presentation, offering pop prints and retro-infused wares with a Palm Springs attitude, including one-shoulder dresses in various lengths, airy knits and crisp shorts.”

We do enjoy much of Ms. Turk’s work, especially her home furnishings and accessories line.

In keeping with our tradition of tracking those former faux-prep school students, we have a few Gossip Girl updates.  More accurately, out and about mentions.

Chris Trotman/Getty Images for ATP

Above we see US Open champ Rafa Nadal with Blake Lively backstage at the Regis and Kelly show yesterday.  The actress then headed to Boston to promote the opening of her film, “The Town”. Also at the Fenway Park showing of the film, Mad Men’s Jon Hamm.

What an amazing place to see a film!

With that, it is g’bye until next time, when we look at the runway shows taking place today, Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch, among others.

Shagadelic at St. Andrews & “Twisted Preppy” at Hilfiger?

Hello-Hello, it is a bright and beautiful day here at the Prepatorium, we hope it is equally gorgeous at your palace.

Today we have a bit of Friday fun, we find ourselves quite incapable of resisting the urge to post this image.

AP

It shrieks “caption contest” doesn’t it? The picture features several attendee at this week’s Champions Dinner preceding the British Open.  John Daly’s choice of attire for the function has generated some conversation. (Mr. Daly is the individual in the center of the back row between last year’s winner, Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and Tiger Woods.) The look on Mr. Woods’ face is priceless.

Mr. Daly is wearing a brand that we have chatted about previously here at the Princess, Loudmouth Golf. (Our most in-depth treatment of the topic is probably contained in the When Argyle Goes Wrong post.) Below we see the golfer at St. Andrews in today’s print, a pink and green paisley; yesterday he sported a purple, lavender and chartreuse combination.

A better look at today’s print. Quintessential Daly, taking the Go to Hell pant to an entirely new level.

While grazing on the Loudmouth site we located the jacket Mr. Daly wore to the Champions dinner; behold the Shagadelic, described as one of the company’s new “Apres Golf Drinking Jackets”. If that seems a trifle overbearing, how about the Hamptons sport coat?

Not distinctive enough for  your MOTH (Man of the House)? You were thinking of something more in the argyle or plaid family?

Ladies, if seeking your own Loudmouth look, fear not. Here are some of the choices available, including such style staples as houndstooth and argyle. (Ahem.)

Here is the Shagadelic for women in both a black pant and a white Skort.

We rather fancy a few of the Loudmouth skort styles, they are not all that removed from many currently seen on the course. Many others however, require the Nancy Reagan response: Just Say No.

Our other item of note today, the unveiling of the Hilfiger family.

Courtesy Tommy HIlfiger via StyleList

Above we show one of several print ads from this fall’s Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign; the fictional Hilfiger family is the focus of a new creative direction.  As described in this WWD story:

“There’s a father and mother (often with a Bloody Mary in hand); several children, including a son who was kicked out of boarding school, a daughter who doesn’t speak and a Portuguese foreign exchange student who never left; two basset hounds, and a station wagon.”

The campaign is supposed to be highly interactive.

Courtesy Image via WWD

Several ‘family members’ will have Facebook and Twitter pages, and one can ‘meet the family’ online at tommy.com. Hopefully this Tommy Hilfiger Facebook post is not indicative of the firm’s skillset on that site.

The post links to the same WWD story we reference above, unfortunately it is only viewable to those who subscribe to Women’s Wear Daily; perhaps a previous arrangement allowing the story to be shared with fans in some other form might have been prudent.

At any rate, in many ways the creative direction makes sense, imbuing a touch of whimsy that has previously been lacking for the company. We have long felt that Mr. Hilfiger took the brand too seriously; this dose of lightheartedness may be a wise strategy.  Here is a quote from Mr. Hilfiger about the upcoming ads:

““This is the first campaign to truly capture the brand’s 25-year heritage of twisted, preppy American sportswear.””

As for that direction and tone, here is part of Styleite’s story on the campaign:

“Words we would used to describe Hilfiger , as a brand: All-American. Classic. Sporty. Preppy. Words we wouldn’t: Twisted.

“We’re not sure how interestingly dysfunctional the family is, so much as it suffers from a particular brand of rich quirkiness that can get tiresome if not handled lightly enough. Think NYC Prep versus Gossip Girl.”

Two more images from the upcoming campaign.

There will also be special “Ultimate Preppy Tailgating” Pandora (online radio) stations and other supporting elements. We do like the way the family’s matriarch, Lea Hilfiger, is described:

““Met [husband] Bernard on a trip to France after Wellesley. Always well-hydrated, yet somehow usually exhausted. Quarterly Canyon Ranch jaunts are a must.”

Courtesy Image via WWD

You won’t be able to miss the ads in the fall fashion magazines, there are 10-page inserts for Vogue, GQ and many others.
