No More Dirty English & Mad for Plaid

Greetings from a sodden, sopping, and soaking wet Prepatorium.  Well, not here inside the Palace exactly, but just generally in The Great Midwest. It’s terrible timing really, as Misadventures of a Newlywed is in the region and we wanted her to enjoy her trip.

We start with news from Juicy Couture they will shut down Dirty English, their Men’s clothing line. The final shipment for the collection will be this fall.

As reported in WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.), the line never really took off:

“The unabashedly girly Juicy brand was a bad fit for a men’s business, and Dirty English lacked recognition, the company admitted.”

In another SOTT (Sign of the Times) many readers will have already heard about, news that Conde Nast is shutting down their business magazine, Portfolio.

We enjoyed this one from its inception, but never subscribed as we simply have too many magazines already. But then Conde Nast closed Men’s Vogue and we had to select a ‘replacement’ subscription from the publisher, so we opted for Portfolio. Now we’re wondering what to pick next…?!

Also in WWD, their look at fall accessories.  The story notes the influence plaid is having on the category.

Of course TP also includes madras in the plaid category, like these J. Crew shorts:

We have a few more Sales and Savings to mention:

  • Both Ann Taylor and lower-priced sister store, Ann Taylor Loft, are doing their Friends and Family promotion. Use promo code FRIENDS at checkout to receive a 30% discount on purchases.
  • Today is the last day to receive 30% off all regular-priced handbags at Shopbop. Use the code ARMCANDY at checkout.

Although we go to great lengths to remain apolitical here at the Prepatorium, we make no secret of our efforts to buy American when acquiring goodies for the Preppy Princess.  Today we were pleased to receive a note about President Obama showing off the Made in the USA label inside his Hart Schaffner Marx suit.

We can only hope that HartMarx (parent company to Hart, Schaffner Marx and Hickey Freeman) is able to resolve the financial difficulties currently facing the company.  The Consort will be crushed if either or both of these labels were to disappear from his retail landscape.

And it would seem the Commander in Chief might also be wardobe-challenged without the upscale clothier. Above Mr. Obama is in Hart Schaffner Marx suit pants, and yes, that is Vice President Biden engaging in a little Friday Fun on April 24th alongside the President.

We close with a couple of Pretty in Pink items to brighten your day, beginning with this treasure at Pink & Brown Love, a companion site to the Pink and Green Scene mentioned in this post.

Pop over to see Erin at Decor by Color or at Pink & Brown Love to learn how to add that poster to your walls if so inclined. Also, Kate Spade’s Union Square Satchel at Bloomingdale’s.

May your day be bright and beautiful!

The Good, the Bad, and The Preppy.

Happy Friday everyone, direct from Princess HQ in “the country’s frozen midsection.”  (Is it just us, or does this sound like an area of the body desperately in need of cosmetic surgery?)

Having ripped off completely borrowed liberally for the title of our post, let us do The Good first, shall we?

The Good would definitely cover the delightful person responsible for surprising us with this:

Thank you Miss Breaking News!

#4. At least we’re not alone with this next one:

#5. Our issues with #4 require vigilance; one of these is clipped on as soon as we are dressed.

As far as The Bad is concerned, regular readers won’t be surprised to see news of 1,100 layoffs at our favorite retailer, that isn’t making us feel any better about the future at Saks.  As the Financial Times put it:

“Saks’ cost-cutting follows news on Wednesday from its rival Neiman Marcus that it was shedding 375 jobs, or about 3 per cent of its staff, after seeing December comparable sales fall by almost a third.

Tiffany, the jewellers, reported a 35 per cent fall in comparable sales at its US stores in November and December, and has said it is considering further cost-cutting measures, having already offered early retirement packages to some 800 employees.”

Or as the Jewelry Designer Extraordinaire Wendy Brandes put it:

Saks is still having its crazy sale. If you buy something, they might also throw in some store fixtures and a few sales associates.”

And double-ouch for anyone employed at Circuit City, or holding a giftcard from the latest in the liquidation line.

Are we the last one on the planet to learn that The Preppy Potato closed?  Just above the “Spring Coming Soon” graphic on their home page is the following message:

“We have decided to close shop. Thank you for your years of business. We have enjoyed working closely with all of you.”

For those unfamiliar with the company, the Potato offered belts with classic icons; they could also be monogrammed.  (Two shown below.)

What a shame.

Frankly, we should have put that little item above in with The Bad. Oh well.  Thank you again Miss Breaking News, we are ever-so-grateful for your generosity!

With that we say “Adieu” until the next time. Do enjoy your weekend and stay warm!

Gossip Guys and Girls, Qee at Target

We probably should have seen this one coming, but it simply never occurred to us. Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and other Gossip Girls on magazine covers? Yes.  But Penn Badgely, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick on a cover together? (Below, Blake Lively on this month’s Cosmopolitan.)

And might we just show our fuddy-duddiness by commenting on how TQM (The Queen Mother) would never allow TP to set foot, nay, not even one toe in the house with Cosmo if the headlines were anything like those seen here. Not. Ever.

Perhaps a magazine cover should be dedicated to Ms. Lively and her ‘real-life’ sweetheart, Penn Badgely, seen walking to the Gossip Girl set last week in New York.

Ms. Lively and co-star Leighton Meester both lent their name to a very good cause, the 8th annual Stuart Weitzman Celebrity Shoe Auction; the fundraiser supports efforts to develop a new test for ovarian cancer. Below, shoes that were up for auction from Ms. Lively, then Ms. Meester. September was Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

TP is mortified we didn’t run this story previously so anyone interested in bidding could actually do so; we apologize for being a dolt. Below, Ms. Meester doing some charitable work for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation at the Armory on September 20th.

Target collaborations continue apace; this one is really very cute, at least we find it cute.  Just 2-1/2″ tall, it is a limited edition Qee, the oh-so-cute toy designer toy figure you may already be familiar with. If not, you aren’t alone, and BTW, in the process of discovering Qees we learned the proper pronunciation is “key”.

The one in the photo above as well as below are both the result of a collaboration between TOY2R and Target, and both come equipped with their optional keychain attachment. Hopefully you aren’t overly fond of the little creatures, as unfortunately you can’t have one, and neither can we.

Apparently these were made only for select Target Team Members and unless you know someone… who may know someone… who really does know someone, then it’s unlikely the little creatures will be dangling from your Birkin. (This may be heresy to some, and we do apologize for disturbing anyone’s equilibrium, but TP actually does find this a whimsical accent to a Birkin bag, although we’re not seeing it with our Longchamps or Goyard.)

And to all our fellow Americans coping with gas shortages that are being incredibly under-reported, we hear your pain. Ouch! As an FYI, Forbes has a story on it.

The scenes over the past several days in places like Nashville, Tenn., Anniston, Ala., and western North Carolina looked like file footage from 1979 – with bags over empty gas pumps and quarter-mile long lines of cars waiting to fill up at stations that hadn’t run out.

We close on an up note with word that our neighbors to the north will be able to order from Saks.com this holiday season. The retailer has finally made arrangements for shipping to Canada; it is long overdue.
