Not Your Granny’s Talbots & Lilly in Lavender… ?

Hello-Hello and welcome to a very green (and pink, natch) St. Patrick’s Day here at the Prepatorium!

It’s another busy day, we start with something that is not green, but lavender.  Actually, it’s chatter about a myriad of colors in this AP story on flowers as inspiration for fashion designers. We hear from several of our favorite brands in the story, including Lilly design director Janie Schoenborn. And while many of us think of these colors when hearing the words ‘Lilly Pulitzer’…

… the color discussed in the story is lavender, or orchid.

“Coming from a long line of gardeners – her father has a degree in landscape design, mom has a traditional English garden and Aunt Molly’s specialty is tropicals – Schoenborn is trying to keep up the tradition with lilacs and syringas.

So far, she hasn’t done a lilac print for Lilly Pulitzer, but a shade of lavender was just added to the label’s palette so it probably won’t be long until she tries one.”

Here is the Shere Wrap in lavender.

Lilly Pulitzer

While the color may not exactly pop in this photo, we’re guessing any upcoming lilac prints will be more than pretty. But then, we have always liked this color.  The story explains that spring is a “floral bonanza” at Lilly, no surprise for most readers. What might we expect to see in the future?

“We don’t always do an exact replica of a flower. Right now we have an abstract orchid. There’s a Queen Anne’s lace that we hadn’t done but will have for summer. … We don’t discriminate against any flowers, but we like ‘pretty’ so no cactuses, but we’ll even do lemon and lime blossoms.”

We are fond of the Jungle Orchid print, to name only one Lilly pattern with a touch of lavender.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The story also offers the floral perspective of Michael Smaldone, creative director at Talbots‘:

“”I’m a pink guy, but my favourite flower is an orange poppy,” says Smaldone. “I love how they’re both wild – with ugly leaves and hairy stems – and have a beautiful delicate flower.”

Below we see the Floral Bouquet Pencil Skirt (L) and the Peonies Print Skirt.

More about Mr. Smaldone’s designs at Talbots:

“He turned to a brush-stroke floral print for Talbots’ spring line, though, because he thought that approach was very optimistic – something the fashion world needs right now.

Two more florals from Talbots, the Linen Sundress in Cherry Blossom (L) and a Silk Dress (R) with a flower we cannot identify.

We expect the feature story will land in many local newspaper style and magazine sections within the next week, but if eager to read it now, we found it on the Winnipeg Free Press site.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As we are speaking of Talbots, we thought a quick glance at the retailer’s fall line might be intriguing, albeit in an abstract way.

Kyle Ericksen/WWD

Mr. Smaldone’s perspective is also cited in this WWD story on the company:

““The brand lost its relevance,” said Smaldone…”

We are guessing many readers concur with that sentiment. But we admit being taken aback to see the store described as “your grandmother’s Talbots,” by the company’s chief marketing officer, Lori Wagner.  (We were merely off by a generation, presuming the retailer was thinking more along the “not your mother’s Talbots” line.) Below we show more pieces from the fall collection.

Kyle Ericksen/WWD

Described as ‘country club chic’, the collection is also said to be more on trend without being offensive:

“… as much as Talbots wants to take a more stylish stance, it does not want to alienate its loyal customer base, which Wagner describes as fortysomething women who are partial to American sportswear.”

This is one of those times when one hopes for the best while remaining somewhat skeptical, a result of the company’s not-so-distant forays into bizarre styles and shoddy quality. We have been more than pleased with recent purchases and are happy to see Talbots charting a healthier course.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also today, good news for those fond of Sperry Top-sider and needlepoint accessory firm Tucker Blair.  Those two companies are collaborating on special-edition products to help promote Sperry’s new retail stores. From today’s story in WWD:

Tucker Blair will produce special-edition needlepoint belts for Sperry’s seven stores that are rolling out this year, including logo and Jolly Roger patterns.

A very savvy marketing move IOHO.  (Is it just us, or do we need to make a ‘collaborations’ category for all of these goings-on?)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with a tease for tomorrow’s post, simply saying it involves our biggest giveaway ever (multiple winners, oh my!) with goodies like this…

PreppyPrincess.com

And this:

PreppyPrincess.com

Oh yes indeedy, this one will be fun.

On that happy note, we leave you with a picture of our girl out and about in the Princessmobile last week, enjoying the notion of spring and days spent lounging in the sun.

When Preppy Goes Bad: Amy Winehouse Argyle & Twin Sets

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday!

Generally we like to do a bit of Friday Fun in this space on this day of the week, but we’re not clear if it is appropriate under the circumstances. The circumstances being this:

Amy Winehouse Fred Perry Argyle Dress

Courtesy Photo via WWD

You are looking at a sketch from the upcoming Amy Winehouse/Fred Perry collaboration, more specifically, the pink and black argyle dress. No, we did not start the day with a Bloody, nor did we ingest a handful of pharmaceuticals, these four words actually belong together.  Amy Winehouse Fred Perry.

The two entities have collaborated on a new collection to be launched this fall.

Word initially came in this Women’s Wear Daily story:

““Amy has been wearing Fred Perry for years, so we were aware she was a genuine fan of the brand,” said Richard Martin, Fred Perry’s marketing director…”

Here are two more sketches, including one look with the Perry polo shirt. In pink.

More from WWD’s story:

“In a palette of mostly black and pink, the 17-piece collection includes a girlish twinset; slim, thigh-skimming pencil skirts; capri pants, a mini bowling dress, and Fred Perry’s signature polo shirts (“collars are most definitely raised,” the press release effused).”

We would have put this in our “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” category until we read all of the Women’s Wear Daily story, including this portion:

“Started 58 years ago as a sportswear collection by tennis icon Fred Perry, the company also has a history of aligning with music stars — such as Paul Weller and Damon Albarn — which has helped grow the label into a more mainstream, musician-favored streetwear brand.”

As is said these days: duh. Our old Fred Perrys are comfy in the closet (as they have been for years), and we are so out of touch we had nary a clue the brand was thought of as streetwear or hip in some quarters.  It matters not, we shall continue to wear the shoes until they have absolutely disintegrated, but we do feel woefully, tragically out of step.

As one might anticipate, the snark-o-meter is peaking in the red zone with this particular partnership. From Entertainment Weekly’s story:

“Preppy fashion company Fred Perry is sullying its tennis whites by doing a fashion line with Amy Winehouse. You read that right…Amy Winehouse.”

For the record, we do think Ms. Winehouse is an extremely talented young woman, we are simply surprised at the turn of events in the fashion world. (The Consort’s reaction to the news? “Tattoos extra.”)

Yesterday’s announcement comes just prior to the Perry collaboration with Liberty of London, launching in April.

Courtesy Photo via HypeBeast

While not exemplifying a preppy aesthetic, this is more of what springs to mind when thinking of a Fred Perry collaboration.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As we are speaking of Liberty, a reminder:

The Liberty of London for Targét collection launches Sunday (3.14.10), some items are now available online at the Liberty Mother Ship on the far side of the pond. We like the notion of Liberty/Target candles, like this Black Tea scented example; we also like the Dunclare Cereal Bowl, and believe both items qualify for our Pretty in Pink designation.

For more background on the partnership click here.

We would feel we were doing a lackluster job of things here if we did not also mention the cosmetic collaboration recently debuted by Liberty and M·A·C cosmetics. Below, selections from their Give Me Liberty line, now available at many outlets, including Nordstrom.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of launches, the LL Bean Signature collection debuts Monday.

Courtesy Image

This is Bean’s highly anticipated line featuring more contemporary clothing and accessories. Below we show two looks originally featured in this post.

From Eric Wilson’s Times story on the new endeavor:

“…it’s not exactly as if Leon Leonwood Bean is trading his mocs for stilettos.”

In addition to the dedicated website one may also visit the Signature Facebook page.

LL Bean Signature

The Facebook site offers images from the new collection for both men…

And women.

Courtesy LL Bean

For those fortunate enough to be near the Tysons Corner store, the collection is already available.  We hope this does well for Bean, we do adore so many of their offerings.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with a look at yet one more collaborative effort, this one involving Lilly Pulitzer.  The retailer has joined with one of our favorite products Barnum’s Animal Crackers to create a million specially decorated boxes of the tasty treats.

Courtesy Image

This is part of the Lilly Goes Green effort with a portion of sales proceeds going to the World Wildlife Fund.  It’s a fun play on words, as there is a Lilly Animal Crackers print, currently a popular choice for many of the Lilly Stationery items.

From all of us here at the Prepatorium, happy weekend!

The Preppy Princess Turns 500

Hello-Hello!

Happy Tuesday to everyone, and apologies for yesterday’s whineathon of a post, it was most unbecoming. We promise to be a better Princess today. In fact, today’s post is all sweetness and light. Seriously.

Because today marks our 500th post!

And to mark the occasion we are going to do something we’re not very good at: talking about ourselves (all of us, each and every Princess…heh-heh-heh), in a manner of speaking. More accurately, talking about life on the Preppy Planet as seen through the eyes of our little blog.

Our very first post was back on February 10, 2008, titled Prepalicious Alberta Ferretti. We looked at an outstanding collection from this designer (perhaps better known for her Philosophy line), but not one generally considered to offer a preppy aesthetic.

Our single most popular post? It is titled Gossip Girls Haunt the Hamptons & Here’s One for the Military:

JustJared.com

JustJared.com

“… this would be actor Ed Westwick, a Brit who plays a rather slimy fellow named Chuck Bass. There were other celeb sightings: we were told that any females in the vicinity of actor Chace Crawford tend to swoon, or get a bit giggly, as seen in the photo below. You know, teenage, pre-teen, post-teen, tweens, you name it, almost any female breathing in and out could be susceptible, at least from from what we understand.”

chace-crawford-bikini-babes-05

Our second most popular post has to have the longest title ever created: Summer Olympics Fashion Focus, Ralph Lauren Team USA Opening Ceremony Uniforms Reactions, and Who Was “Preppy” Dressed Team?

Courtesy Polo Ralph Lauren

Courtesy Polo Ralph Lauren

Other hot topics include Tiffany Eyeglasses….

Courtesy Tiffany

Courtesy Tiffany

Goyard totes,

…along with all manner of apparel and accessories, especially of a preppish design.

Jim Young/Reuters

Jim Young/Reuters

And when those styles intersected with politics and/or celebrity (let alone darling little girls), that only seemed to heighten the interest. Sketches have also been popular.

Courtesy J. Crew

Courtesy J. Crew

J. Crew proved especially adroit at maximizing marketing opportunities in this arena.

Occasionally we let a little of our LogoPhobia (a little?!) rear its head, and we have delighted in sharing felt obligated to report on those newly named to the Anti-Prep Wall of Shame.  We have also loved finding things that are Pretty in Pink, discovering Argyle Adventures, not to mention sharing anything nautically inclined, adorned with grosgrain ribbon, or done in a seersucker or madras motif.

The goings on here at the Prepatorium have also been topics for discussion, as well as our little trips to visit TQM (The Queen Mother) and other royalty, along with cataloguing the travails of getting that drawbridge over the moat up and down when we’re at the mercy of such a testy group of gnomes.  Don’t you find that getting good help is so hard these days?! (This is where one inserts the smirk.)

Classic prep retailers, clothing with a Lilly label (let alone our Lilly Pulitzer stationery collection), spring and fall Fashion Weeks, Grand Slam tennis, nothing is safe it seems, especially if The Consort is doing the post! And we’ll probably keep it that way, unless you direct us to do otherwise. (Although some might be surprised at what we consider our favorite post, as it has nothing whatsoever to do with preppy style or fashion.)

Because we follow your lead; the very best part of all this bloggage has been our treasured readers. By far.  We consider ourselves more-than-fortunate to have made so many friends via this medium, we really are blessed. So if there is something you want to see more, or hear less about, anything at all, do tell! We always want to know your thoughts.

After this there really isn’t anything we can say other than “Thank you”.

More Lilly Pulitzer Sneak Peek & “When Logos Attack”

Hello-Hello everyone, happy Thursday!

We are ever-so-pleased to finally be composing our little post today, because it means that electrical service has been restored to the Prepatorium. Honestly, this is the sort of thing that causes us to question the wisdom of that moat around the Palace, you all know the perils of raising the drawbridge when lacking electrical power, the minions are just so cranky on this issue.

And frankly, the timing is classic, as we had such grand Bloggage plans today, coordinated in advance with Miss Misadventures Herself (aka Misadventures of a Newlywed) as we were covering the same topic, and we were both going to send our readers to each other’s site to “see more pictures.” Pictures of what, you ask?

Why, it’s time to share more from this fall’s new (and exceptionally fabulous) Lilly Pulitzer Stationery and Gifts Collection, arriving here at the Princess within weeks!

We start with the new Lilly Holiday Ornament Sets.

PreppyPrincess.com

PreppyPrincess.com

These are offered in our favorite color combo, natch, and will run $17.50 for a set of three.

Also new on the horizon, the Lilly Cocktail Shakers, more-than-fun IOHO, sure to make any beverage tastier.

Shaken Up and Juice Bar, left to right respectively, are the patterns for the shakers, retailing at $39.50.  And Juice Bar will match all of the other Lilly Juice Bar and Juice Stand tableware for an even more stylish table.

Also on the beverage front, new Thermal Travel Mugs.

The patterns are Vintage Patch, Private Property and Trouble Hibiscus; these are $15.50. We have more images of the Paper Doll Book:

Does anyone else recognize a familiar piece of clothing or two…? These look like loads of fun for your Tiny Prep.

We cannot believe how quickly our IT Department (cough-cough, IT Dept = The Consort) has created the new web pages for everyone to use to pre-order, he is just Mr. Speedy!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This next item is so incredibly fabulous we absolutely had to include it today, despite it making the post even pokier than usual.

It’s the collaboration between Lacoste and Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana, creating polo shirts for the preppy retailer’s 4th Holiday Collector’s Series.

How remarkable are these?

There will be 20,000 of the limited edition polos available, and while much-too-cool for yours truly, we adore their spirit.

There will also be a “Super-Limited Edition” (ahem) of the shirt seen below, created entirely from the little Lacoste Alligator logos.

There are to be only 12 men’s and 12 women’s in this version; here is a closer look, via Yatzer.

If wondering about our Logophobia, we can only say “non, non, non, ce n’est pas un problème,” for these appear to be done with an artistic eye, yes, but an outlook accompanied by a touch of whimsy.  They do not appear to take themselves too seriously. Very, very witty.

Now, if seeking furniture, the brothers are also noted for their Alligator Chair.

Indeed.

Grins and giggles until next time!

Sneak Peek at Anna Sui Gossip Girl for Target, Lacoste Red Goes Retro

Hello-Hello and welcome, and most importantly, thank you for visiting.

We don’t tell you that enough, do we? Your visiting and comments and all-around goodness make our days better, brighter and happier than we can say, we must be more attentive to sharing our gratitude.

Those following us on Twitter already know this morning’s sad news: a symbol of classic apparel and accessories for Children is no more.  In an awful SOTT (Sign Of The Times) Best & Company has filed bankruptcy, and it’s not Chapter 11, allowing an entity to get its act together; unfortunately it is a Chapter 7 filing, meaning liquidation.

Remember the retailer’s sketches of possible Inauguration attire for Sasha and Malia Obama?

What a shame. Sniff.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We are fortunate enough to have stumbled onto a few blog posts sharing an early look at the upcoming Anna Sui for Target collection.  Only obsessive readers Frequent blog visitors may recall this post explaining that Ms. Sui’s Target designs would be based on, or inspired by, the hit television show Gossip Girl.

Below, the Blair, Serena, Jenny and Vanessa looks from the Collection, due in stores September 13 through October 17. (Our thanks to Nitrolicious for the nicely done collage.)

Without becoming entirely tedious going into too much detail, here is a portion of that original post on this back in May:

Industry trade publication WWD broke the story yesterday; in an intriguing twist, Ms. Sui is using the four main characters from TV’s Gossip Girl to guide her designs.

While much-too-cool for TP, we look forward to seeing them in stores. Those hoping for designs true to Miss Sui’s runway creations will be pleased by what Nylon magazine has noted:

As Nylon writes in this post:

“Target says their new Go! International collection, with youthquake designer Anna Sui, was inspired by Gossip Girl.

And while we definitely see hints of Vanessa, Blair, Serena, and Little J in the recently-leaked look book, we’ve got our own idea about where the clothes came from:

Anna Sui’s most beloved past runways!”

Speak of the devil… trade publication Ad Age has an interesting review looking at a couple of this summer’s reality shows.

“NYC Prep,” easily pitched and packaged as “the real ‘Gossip Girl,'” explores the luxe lives of six New York City teens. In doing so, the show actively prods viewers to rage — rage against the careless lives the protagonists lead. It wants us to bemoan their vanishing youth, their premature descent into jadedness. It wants us to demonize the parents who empower them.

Don’t take the bait. This is merely a show about sniveling, graceless little s—s,….The six bon vivants are neither smart nor charming, and they possess all the self-awareness of a twig. At least “Gossip Girl” dishes out its blithe urban bitchery with a wink and a smirk; the entire point of “NYC Prep,” as with each of Bravo’s “Housewives” offerings, is to hold its subjects up to ridicule.”

It seems ‘scathing’ might be a better term to describe writer Larry Dobrow’s reaction to NYC Prep. (Airing tonight, BTW.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have long loved Lacoste for their classic understatement and timeless lines. (Notwithstanding a few pieces over the years triggering a raging case of Logophobia.) The company’s younger, hipper Red Collection debuted this spring with a slimmer silhouette and lower pricepoints, aimed at the 18-25 year olds.

WWD reported yesterday that the sporty retailer has teamed with ever-so-chic Jeffrey New York for a small collection launching in October. The group has a definite retro appeal as seen in the sleeveless tipped cotton piqué polo dress.

We are calling the long-sleeve cashmere cardigan below our Pretty in Pink for the day. It is somewhat more vibrant than the hues one might see us sporting here at the Palace, very bright indeed. (How about neon? Does that seem more apropos?)

BTW, there are two Jeffrey New York stores, one in the Meatpacking district and the other in Atlanta. As in Georgia.

It would be almost sinful to be chatting up Lacoste and neglect a reminder of  the rather significant Lacoste Summer Sale now underway online and in stores.

An Award for Lilly & Preppy Sales Abound

Hello-Hello! Might we inject a personal note here and say we are ever-so-happy to be back home at the Prepatorium. New York is always fun, but being home at the Palace brings a smile to TP’s face.

Our trip to the Stationery Show was fun and frenzied, with just enough social activities thrown in to keep us re-applying the lip gloss.  We saw loads of new goodies we think you will love, including some divine designs for the Fall and holiday seasons that we shall be adding to our Lilly Pulitzer Stationery and Gifts Collection.

On the agenda? Fireplace matches (you know, the really long ones the houseman uses), cookie cutters, and…. (insert dramatic music here), 2010 Calendars! There will be both desk-top and wall calenders that you are simply going to adore. Many readers will remember we offered pre-ordering of the Lilly Stationery merchandise prior to this spring’s launch; we will provide that same opportunity with these new treasures.  Just sign up for our Lilly Mailing List at PreppyPrincess.com.

As we are speaking of Lilly Pulitzer, fans will be pleased to learn she received the prestigious Spirit of a Woman Award from the American Apparel and Footwear Association.  The award presentation was last week in New York, and Isaac Mizrahi did the honors, wearing pink loafers in honor of the designer:

PHOTO:

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

It is clear Mr. Mizrahi thinks highly of Lilly’s impact on American style:

“I think that Lilly Pulitzer is the most important American designer ever. Her work has influenced American designers and international designers. If you are wearing a Lilly Pulitzer dress, they can tell. Whether it’s in Palm Beach or in Milan, in New York or in Russia, it doesn’t matter where you are wearing that dress. They know, it’s Lilly Pulitzer.”

Unfortunately Lilly was not able to attend; the award was accepted on her behalf by Lilly Grand Pooh-Bah Scott Beaumont, accompanied by another Lilly exec, James Bradbeer Jr.

BTW, the Lilly Brooke Shields Tunic and Swimsuit were featured on the Today Show yesterday in a segment about beachwear and swimsuits.

And in a final note, we have added the Lilly Pulitzer Dry Erase Boards to the store, an outstanding addition to your palace, equally wonderful as a gift!

The Boards are available in Animal Crackers, Cabanarama, Juice Bar and Bees Knees Patch.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

It will come as no surprise that just about every retailer is having a sale or discount promotion of some sort as we approach the holiday weekend. Burberry tops today’s list of just such establishments.

Burberry

Burberry

There is a substantial amount of merchandise available in the ‘Sale’ category online, no surprise in light of the company’s continued underperformance.

Invite-only shopping site Rue La La has Vineyard Vines on sale through tomorrow.

They also have a Kate Spade sale underway.

Both sales end tomorrow (Thursday, 5.21.09) at 11am; if you need an invite to ‘join’ the site, just email the Princess: thePreppyPrincess@mac.com.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

J. Crew is promoting a sale at their Factory Stores, running today through Memorial Day.

We predict Crew will have a “Take an additional 20% off” discount offering within the next week to 10 days.  We’ll share the Silk-Linen Sweater as today’s Pretty in Pink:

The sweater originally retailed at $59.50; it is now selling at $49.50 or $39.99, depending upon the color.

The Nordstrom Designer Sale is underway as part of their storewide Half-Yearly Sale event.

Nordstrom Designer Sale

And Barney’s Private Sale continues.

private_summer_01

++++++++++++++++++++++++

We want to share a few quick updates to previous posts:

  • The Gossip Girl spinoff on the CW is officially a non-starter. Many thanks to those who let us know it was not happening.
  • Something definitely supposed to happen, Gossip Guy Chace Crawford has been named to star in the remake of “Footloose,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

We’ll have more on the Stationery Show in our next post. Until then – smiles!

You can even see a photo of the aforementioned Queen Bee Swain and many other bloggers, wearing their Lilly!)

In other bloggage news, just as one contest ends another begins: The Southern Social has an excellent contest underway that requires your attention and your vote. You see, Miss Social requested wardrobe suggestions for a ‘First Date’ sort of outfit, asking only that contributors put together the outfits using Polyvore, a most delicious online service/tool/creative assistant.

The suggested collages were outstanding, including this one from Beaufort Belle, offering an elegantly understated look accented by a Tiffany ring and Marc Jacobs clutch.

A few notes in the Sales and Savings category today – many readers will already be up to speed on the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale, but if not, here is the information one needs be in the know:

The dates are as follows:

  • Wednesday June , 5am-8pm
  • Thursday, June 4, 7am-8pm
  • Friday, June 5, 7am-8pm

A few other notes on this:

  • Shop Friday & it is BOGO (Buy One, Get One free) on Kids’ Clothing, plus Ladies’ & Kids’ Footwear
  • Saturday is BOGO on Mens’ Clothing, Ladies’ Knit Polos, Ladies’ Swimwear, and all Samples/Seconds/Clearance

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have two other very quick sale notes of a preppy sort, the next being Kate Spade.

The retailer is offering 25% off a selection of goods along with complimentary shipping, now through May 1oth.

Also hitting our electronic in-bin, this note from J. Crew with news of their “long awaited sale“. Not to be negative about any savings at any decent prep purveyors, but “long awaited..?” We think not, as Crew just finished a recent “Take an additional…”, you know the drill. Proceed accordingly. (Heh-heh.)

We’re once again about to race out the door, we hope everyone has a completely splendid afternoon and evening!
