J. Crew Bridal Spring 2011, Preppy Pet Styles

Hello-hello, welcome to an almost weekend here at the Prepatorium.

We have all manner of goodies today, beginning with something we do love to look at, wedding gowns. At last month’s Bridal Market J. Crew revealed styles for next spring.

We love the clutch with its oversized bow, above left.

More styles.

If determined to go strapless and short, the short dress above left is pretty.

As did most of the full-length gowns.

Our thanks to AisleDash for the photos.

For those who do not receive the Lilly Pulitzer Holiday Gift Book, we also have a few shots to share from this year’s offerings.

Fab photographer Trevor Dixon has posted some of his stellar photos for the catalog on his blog; click here to see more.

Next, a topic that has captivated Times readers:

An essay asking “Why Can’t Middle-Aged Women Have Long Hair?” has generated hundreds (1256 as of today) of comments from readers.  Here is a bit of Dominique Browning’s original story:

“MY mother hates it. My sister worries about it. My agent thinks I’m hiding behind it. A concerned friend suggests that it undermines my professional credibility. But in the middle of my life, I’m happy with it. Which is saying a lot about anything happening to my 55-year-old body.”

The volume of comments was so high the paper devoted a special segment to the topic on its website; below, a sampling. From “Kate in London”:

“Mothers and hair, the eternal battle. After a great haircut in my 40s, what was my mother’s comment? “Darling, you look like a middle-age hippie.” Last summer, my sister, now in her 50s, was going out the door, and what were our mother’s parting words? “Brush that hair.” While we used to get upset about it, as middle-aged women, we’re just happy to have our mom around so she can tell us how bad our hair looks. Long may it last!”

But then “RBenstein” in New York wrote:

“Weeellll…. truth be told, I really don’t think long gray hair does anything for any woman of a ‘certain’ age. It’s like women (or men) who dress younger than they are … in the end, it only ages them.”

A professional in the industry, “Skip Gue, Miami” notes:

“This is great! As a hairdresser for over 25 yrs (and a man). I get this all the time about women cutting their locks at a certain age.I ask them why? who made this rule?”

We ask our treasured readers – what do  you think? Is longer gray hair acceptable? Or should it simply be kept short after a “certain age”?

Although not generally a fan of dressing one’s furry family members, we do want to share a few goofy images that we hope will put smiles on your faces heading into the weekend.  The first is what we’ll refer to as the preppy-styled cat:

United Bamboo via Racked

That is just one of the images in next year’s United Bamboo Cat Calendar, the 2011 calendar starts shipping Nov. 15.

The second shot showcases a rather stylish pooch in his shirt and madras tie.

Via Rover Dog

The snappy duds are from Rover Dog, a wonderful etsy shop featuring items in two of our favorite fabrics, seersucker and madras, among other styles.  We must admit to being tipped off to the shop by an image on Facebook or Twitter, but cannot remember who the eagle-eyed shopper was; if you know, do tell, so we might properly give credit to the appropriate party.

On that frivolous note, goodbye and happy weekend!

Friday Fun: Meet a Mini Preppy Princess

Hello-Hello, and Happy (oh-so-joyous) Friday!

Today we offer our inaugural effort at Friday Fun, something we shall attempt on those weeks when we are so swamped with business, volunteer and other activities we are simply incapable of creating a post containing anything remotely witty, wise, or otherwise wonderful.  Not exactly Thoughtful Thursdays or Wordless Wednesdays, just some light, bright, fun events and activities as captured by you, our treasured readers!

We do admit being a tad anxiety-ridden, as we are starting with a Friday Fun event that may be tough to top. Take a look:

PrepSchool 101

PrepSchool 101

That Little Princess is PrepSchool 101’s precious Lady C, all smiles with a package from the Preppy Princess.

Inside?

PrepSchool101

PrepSchool101

Little Miss C’s new friends are named ‘Barrett’ and ‘Genevieve’ (perhaps she somehow knew about our Great Aunt Genevieve…?), and they are part of her Lilly Pulitzer Paper Doll set.

We think this Little Princess has an outstanding eye for fashion, as her new friends are very well-dressed and perfectly accessorized; clearly they’ll make quite the style statement when they head out the door.

Seeing what a helpful assistant Little Miss C has was also very impressive.

PrepSchool 101

The skills and assistance offered by Jane-the-kitty are not to be overlooked. Perhaps equally important? Jane is almost as style conscious as her supervisor, just look at her preppy madras collar by Katie and Olive. And we love a kitty with a conscience; proceeds from sales of these collars go to a very good cause, visit Puppy Love by Erin to learn more.

To enjoy all of the fun with Miss C, or to simply see her enjoying other activities of a Preptastic sort, pop in and visit PrepSchool 101, always an enjoyable, enlightening, and more-than-fashionable read!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Our other Friday Fun element involves introducing readers to a new blog focusing on a favorite topic: Lilly!  That’s right, the irrepressible Muffy Martini has created a new home for those loving all things Lilly: the appropriately named Lilly Lovers is the spot to be!

In fact, Muffy and a good friend of hers, Mrs. Newlywed, (whom we adore and consider ourselves fortunate to have on our little Princess Team), were so excited about the new blog they convinced us we needed to help Muffy celebrate, and we said “Why not?”

We let them talk us into doing something we have never done before: offering 10% off everything on our site.  To receive the discount, use promo code MUFFYDEAL at checkout.

We conclude our initial Friday Fun effort with a reader request: send us your fun photos, stories, anything at all you think others might enjoy seeing to brighten their day!

A “Preppy Pile-On”? We Think Not.

Hello-Hello, and Happy Friday!

We are going to be speedy today.  More than 200 lbs. of our Lilly Pulitzer Fall Stationery & Gift line arrived here at the Prepatorium moments ago, so you know we’re a tad busier than normal.

We have a few different takes on ‘preppy styles’ to share. Somehow we fell over a newsbit (aka ‘news tidbit’ or ‘newsbrief’) from the Manila Bulletin, “The Preppy Pile-on“.  The brief story references “preppy grunge” if there is such a thing.  We think not; the appellation is an oxymoron. However, we soldier on, sharing the writer’s description:

“A combination of classic preppy influences and American sportswear, the so-called Urban Prep look layers crisp preppy staples such as buttondowns and vests with urban wear like track jackets and baggy jeans.

Accompanying the story are a number of different looks; most of the pieces are from Max Azria’s diffusion line, BCBGeneration, and Kensie Girl.

PreppyPile-OnManilaNewsUntitled-13

The story includes this line:

“The look is divinely put-together yet casual cool.”

This time we must disagree with the author.

Some readers may be aware that online discounter Bluefly also has a blog; recently a post on the blog, “NYC Prep: School’s Back in Session“, looked at preppy style.

Bravo’s NYP Prep prompts the post’s writer to look back at her high school years:

“Just reminiscing about that first crucial week during September, where everything from your clothes to your hair to even your backpack was open to criticism from fellow classmates sends me into a fetal position. And now that Bravo is airing NYC Prep, I can reminisce about the ultra-privileged snobs roaming the hallways too.”

The pieces shown include a Fendi belt, L.A.M.B. shirt, Michael Kors slacks,  and a Hickey Freeman tie.

Again, we’re underwhelmed.  Your thoughts on either combination of apparel and accessories?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Today’s Pretty in Pink comes to us via the Coterie Blog, where one always finds fascinating recommendations for all manner of goodies. The blog is curated with an eye towards elegance and whimsy, the ideal combination.    Recently we saw a post about some lovely ribbon at an establishment new to our retail roster, Bell’occhio in San Francisco.

In order to provide a more fully informed report, we felt obligated to personally view the merchandise.  (Ahem.)

The Pink Oval Box (above) looks like the perfect accent for many a room or walk-in, just lovely. While the shop carries a wonderful variety of goods, from ribbons to nail brushes, the selection of pink boxes alone is outstanding, Below, the Heliotrope Boxes with Doré Trim.

We close with something we’ll call Pretty in Pink and Green compliments of the always delightful PrepSchool 101.  More accurately, this comes courtesy of PrepSchool 101’s little one, the darling Little Miss C.  Seen below, Miss C shows off her Mom’s sunglasses while sporting a Lilly shift in Cabanarama.

At any rate, it seems Miss C is anxious to see her new Lilly Paper Doll set.

She came up with a creative solution to keep her busy while awaiting their arrival, and we adore the result.

The bows in the dolls’ hair add the perfect touch, and we thank Miss C for sharing her artistic talent with us! We are happy to report the real Paper Dolls are being unpacked as we type, so they shall soon be winging their way to a new home with the sweet-as-can-be Miss C.

On such a cheery note we say G’Bye, may the weekend be warm and wonderful no matter your locale!
