The “Preppy Triangle”, Queen of Prep & Royal Wedding Invites via Fax

Hello-Hello!

We have an amazing number of little tidbits today, so we jump right in with a look at a story we enjoyed reading in our Journal last Friday; Palm Beach: An Insider’s Guide is tied to the city’s upcoming Centennial anniversary, and offers a look at one of our favorite spots:

“It’s not for everyone, but if you’re tired, so tired, of the Twitter Age, it’s your Lilly Pulitzer bag: The rules of conduct abide, as does cocktail hour. And the “careless people,” as F. Scott Fitzgerald called them, keep their riches mostly un-embarrassing.

November to April is known as “The Season” in Palm Beach, Florida’s 16-mile-long Atlantic coast barrier island that completes the Preppy Triangle (Manhattan and the Hamptons also included).”

We have never heard that triumvirate of communities described as “the Preppy Triangle,” but it makes sense… no? The story by Peter Davis is a delightful read, although with the link we are using, for some reason one must scroll quite a ways down the page to get to the story and accompanying photos. While we have spent very little time in Palm Beach of late, we must say that the locale looks quite appealing at this time of year, gripped as we are by a cold spell here in The Great Midwest. Sigh.

Something else related to the Palm Beach 100th anniversary in April comes via Lilly Pulitzer: the limited edition Centennial Murfee scarf.

Jeffrey Langlois/Palm Beach Daily News

As explained by the Palm Beach Daily News, the pattern shows iconic Palm Beach scenes:

“Indeed, the Pulitzer house on South County Road, now on the market by the way, is one of several locations depicted in the toile-style pink-and-green print applied to the oversized silk-cashmere fringed scarf.”

Other landmarks shown on the scarf include The Breakers, C. Orrico’s PB store and Mar-a-Lago (ahem); it is available online at Lilly.

There are more wonderful posts from a number of our cyber-pals about their oh-so-excellent-adventures to the “For the Love of Lilly Exhibition” in Boynton Beach, the Preppy Pink Blondie as well as Preppy Panache recently shared news of their excursions.

On a related note, we can’t remember if we previously posted this next tidbit or not, but the Palm Beach Daily News reports that Lilly Pulitzer has been dubbed the “Queen of Prep” by exhibition director Lori J. Durante.

“Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau is a legend in her own time. She created a Palm Beach look, featuring bright Key West fabrics, which has been a favorite with resorters since the fashions came out in 1959.

Re-Lilly’s Sue Trader shared her photos from the exhibit (she is seen with Lilly in the photo above) in an absolutely fabulous post about that shows many vintage pieces from the exhibit, including this box purse from the 1970s.

The show runs through May 11, so there is still hope all those of us yet to make the trip.

Our Twitter friends Miss Janice and Brown-Eyed Belle tipped us off to our next item, a quick royal wedding update, this one via our friends on the far side of the pond at the Daily Mail:

“The engagement was announced on Twitter and Facebook.

So perhaps it was fitting that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding guests should receive a save-the-date letter from the Queen by fax.”

In reality, protocol dictates that other royals be given an early notice or invitation to events, The Telegraph has more:

“However, the full handwritten invitations, embossed in gold, will be sent to all 1,800 guests by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office next month.”

Our only point of confusion involves the lack of a fax here at the Prepatorium.

Guess who has now branched out into children’s fashion? Milly!

The Milly Minis collection is now available, we love the sailboats on this coverup for toddlers and little girls, along with the green and navy Shift Dress. Cute treasures for the Princess in your palace!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

One final note about our contest giving away a copy of this:

Barnes & Noble

Are You a Jackie or a Marilyn?” is signed by best-selling author Pamela Keogh, and the big winner also happens to be an author, La Belette Rouge!  Miss LBR, if you can email or message us with your shipping information, we’ll have your book on its way tomorrow!

Until next time, g’bye!

A Designer Changes Our Mind, True Prep’s Lisa Birnbach & Lilly Pulitzer Get Together

Hello-Hello, happy Tuesday!

Today is hectic (this is new?), jammed with heavy volunteer commitments, so we are über-brief.  We planned to start today’s post by going off on a psychotic rant mentioning our disdain for the “pre-fall” collections being revealed this week. Something about “Do we need yet another season? On top of Spring, Fall and Resort? Really?”

But then this popped up:

Via Style.com

And these, and many more like them, showed up on the monitor.

Did we remain on task here at The Prepatorium? Indeed, we did not.

The pieces are by the master himself, Oscar de la Renta.

They far transcend what would be called ‘eye candy’ in today’s parlance.

The designer makes some seriously spectacular party frocks.

We take back everything we were going to say about an additional season. At least when it comes to Mr. de la Renta we do.

Our other tidbit involves a few more-than-notable preps, and a blogger we have long enjoyed reading, Preppy Panache.

As it turns out, True Prep author Lisa Birnbach was doing a signing at the Lilly Pulitzer exhibit in Boynton Beach, and Miss Panache was on hand to have her book signed and enjoy the exhibit.  To see some of Lilly’s reaction to the exhibit (including some lace trim on a dress) just click here to see the entire post, it is a very fun read.

We leave you with a bit of a “Like Mother, Like Daughter” pair of pictures.

Do you think there is a strong resemblance?

With that, we are out the door and off!

True Prep Update & Book Tour Details

Hello-Hello,

Welcome to a Monday, once again marked by more than a little madness here at the Prepatorium.  Today’s big news involves this:

Random House

Our initial copy of True Prep arrived Friday, along with the press kit; to say we were excited would be an understatement.  We have been busy scanning the book, looking at all of the great illustrations and photos and going through the marketing materials.

One of the more notable items in the kit, the dates and locations for the book tour: this is not your standard book tour, not by a long shot. The majority of functions are not at bookstores, but at fun, fashionable prep locales, like LL Bean in Boston and at Tyson’s, Vineyard Vines in Greenwich and Georgetown, multiple Cole-Haan stores, and J. McLaughlin’s Charleston store. There are many book stores as well, including Powell’s in Portland, a fabulous establishment we have enjoyed visiting on many occasions.

The tour officially kicks off in a major way at Bloomie’s, as part of Fashion’s Night Out (FNO is briefly discussed here) on September 10, and then moves on.  The schedule shows multiple appearances at Brooks Brothers in particular; this makes sense as we have word there is a Brooks Brothers/True Prep item that customers will be able to purchase in the not-too-distant future.  (There is a strong possibility you will also see the item at the Princess, it is in stock, but the crush of business has prevented the Consort the IT Department from getting it up on the site.)

Another preppy icon, Sperry, figures heavily in True Prep promotion, with tour stops at several new Sperry retail stores: Kansas City, Dallas and Westchester. Sperry is also co-hosting events at several Nordstrom stores; can you say “merchandising opportunity”?

Also well-represented on the calendar, Lilly Pulitzer, with functions slated for the Pink Magnolia in St. Louis, and the KOP (King of Prussia) Mother Ship store, in all of its remodeled splendor.

Jenn over at the always-delightful Love List has more pictures of the fabulous re-do at the store, just click here.

One other site sure to be a hit, the “For the Love of Lilly” exhibit at the Museum of Lifestyle and Fashion History is the location for a True Prep event.

Via the Sun-Sentinel

One of the major contributors to that exhibit is the very talented Kristina from Lotus and Lilly, she has more about it on her blog.  The nearby Lilly store in Boca Raton will host Ms. Birnbach for a visit, near the end of the tour in December.  Other retailers hosting events include the always-stylish Stubbs & Wootton, and jeweler Verdura.

The material in the press kit indicates savvy marketing minds at work, with outstanding venues for the book tour, and word of solid merchandise tie-ins. (Although the stops are heavily concentrated on both coasts and in Florida, a few more in The Great Midwest would make us smile.) Methinks there will be several fun co-branded products with this one, not limited to the upcoming jewelry piece at Brooks and the Princess.

Our initial reaction to Ms. Birnbach’s latest offering is very positive, True Prep is similar in tone and tenor to The Original Preppy Handbook. We presume the light treatment of the topic is what most readers are looking for; the same irreverence that made TOPH such a hit is present in abundance, with lots of tongue-in-cheek comments and witty asides. We enjoyed our quick glance through the book, and look forward to settling in with it for a dedicated read, cover to cover. We hope to have our review posted at some point this week.

One other note before we scram-a-rama, because we somehow have multiple copies of the Original Preppy Handbook, we’re thinking a giveaway offering one of each might be in order.  Does that make sense?

Until next time, g’bye!
