A New Line of Preppy Clothing from….the Jonas Brothers?

Hello-Hello and Happy Sunny Day!

We must start by saying “Thank You” to everyone who sent such lovely sentiments yesterday. Your much-too-kind “get well, feel better, migraine? Ouch!” thoughts are appreciated more than you may realize.

Now for today’s topic, the news that your tween (or someone else’s, or you if the apparel fits, so to speak) can soon be clad in clothing from these pop stars:

The pop phenomenon known as the Jonas Brothers (above, Kevin, Joe & Nick) is branching out beyond musical and acting endeavors, and moving into clothing.

The marketing minds at Disney are behind the launch of the new line, which will simply be called “Jonas.” This news comes just as the group’s concert tour is being announced, and in advance of the Disney Channel’s eagerly-awaited “Jonas” TV show, scheduled for air in May.

But what about the clothes?

Most of our details come via this story in last week’s WWD.  According to that story, the sportswear collection will be at stores in time for back-to-school shopping, and it won’t be difficult to find stores carrying the clothing:

“…hitting mass retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kmart, Sears and J.C. Penney…”

And what is driving the styles?

“The Jonas tween apparel collection is inspired by the preppy clothing seen on the show, and nearly all of it is not character driven — there are argyle sweater vests with the Horace Mantis Academy logo…”

Pricepoints for the group sound more than reasonable (keep in mind this comes from a Princess with no children, so our perspective isn’t what we would call ‘experienced.”) at $9.99 to $24.99.

Will you daughter wear clothing from the über-popular band?  Or will this turn out to be a horrendous example of “When Preppy Goes Wrong”..? Do tell dolls, as this expiring mind is dying to know!

Remember the much-too-fun Lilly Pulitzer Limited Edition Jeeps we have all been talking about and showing in photos?

Well, it turns out not everyone in New York shares our appreciation of life’s finer things.

It seems that when the Lilly store was packed to the gills last week with loads of ladies enjoying cupcakes and other treats, feeding the parking meter was momentarily forgotten. (We’re told it was barely a blip of time, really.) So what happened?

A representative of the city’s meter-reading ninja troops descended upon one of the Jeeps, leaving behind a love note. (Not.) Well, as TQM has been known to say, “Not everyone can appreciate great beauty.” Perzactly.

And on that note we say “G’bye” as we fly to our volunteer shift at the local Senior Center.

The Princess is in Shock!

The Princess is absolutely stunned.

Dazed and amazed.

Wondering how she could be so lucky as to win not one, but two blog Giveaways! We haven’t ever won any of the giveaways we entered, so this is amazing! The other interesting thing is that both bloggers were doing their first-ever Giveaways!

Our first stroke of luck came from the wonderful Hanging by a Thread blog:

The talented Kebi is the brains and beauty behind Hanging by a Thread, and the earrings we won are the handiwork of Botanical Bird jewelry. Take a look at these beauties:

Since this was our first Giveaway win, you can imagine our amazement when we learned we were the lucky winner in another giveaway!

Kristin is the proud owner of the Summer in Newport blog.  Just as the title indicates, Kristin summers in Newport, and also has a love of things pink and green.  Winning her giveaway means we get to have this!

A thousand “Thank you” hugs to both Hanging by a Thread and Summers in Newport for their generosity! And for anyone interested in the designs created by Botanical Bird, or the goodies offered by Kristin Pearce, just clicking on their names will transport you to their Etsy shops.

Now we have some fabulous photos to share, thanks to the delightful Preppy Pit Bull, just home from her excursion to New York last week. She was one of the many bloggers fortunate enough to be part of the Lilly-clad audience for last week’s Martha Stewart show focused on the Lilly Pulitzer Jubilee.

She is ever-so-nice, sharing her photos of some of the excitement, starting with the photo above, a special shopping event at the new Lilly Mother Ship (as we call it) on Madison.  In the next photo you can two members of the design team working on new prints for the line.

And here is a shot inside the studio where the show was done live.

For anyone interested in the rest of the photos and more info, just click here and you’ll find yourself at Miss Pit Bull’s post on the topic! Thank you for sharing Miss Preppy Pit Bull!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

All About the Lilly: WWD Runs Lilly Pulitzer Special Edition

TP is in heaven. Truly.

The editorial brains minds over at Women’s Wear Daily have dedicated an entire special issue of the paper to Lilly Pulitzer’s 50th.  (You may remember in today’s post on the Inaugural gowns that we mentioned WWD was doing some fabulous special issues… this is another one of those special editions.)

WWD "Lilly Pulitzer at Fifty"

For those less familiar with the Lilly Pulitzer brand, it was started in 1958 by Lilly Pulitzer….

… rapidly becoming very successful into the early 1980’s. And then – horrors!  The line ceased operating in 1984 and all hope was lost for true Lilly lovers. Life began anew in 1994 when Scott Beaumont and James Bradbeer Jr. (seen below) decided to buy the company and bring the storied line back to life.

And it gets better moving forward: the company plans to grow the brand through the addition of a stationery and gift line. How fabulous is this news?!

The collection will be licensed by Lifeguard Press, the folks who handle the Vera Bradley paper line.  According to the WWD story the new paper group will include a variety of items:

“…. party goods and gifts, from wrapping paper and bags to partyware, cocktail napkins and drink umbrellas, office accessories like desk sets, diaries, notebooks, frames and calendars…”

The paper line is on track to launch in January. If you would like to be on the mailing list for updates on the line and other announcements, just click here to be taken to the Lifeguard Press site.

There is a quick mention of the sleepwear line, licensed by Carole Hochman:

As well as an intriguing look at the design process.  Have you ever wondered just how the company continues to come up with such smashing colors and designs? Here is an inspiration board from Lilly headquarters in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

TP is absolutely transfixed by the pink and green chairs even though they are almost impossible to see in the photo.  Perhaps they are easier to see in this shot of the atrium at the Lilly Mother Ship:

One of the dynamite stories in the special issue features quotes from some of fashion’s brightest talents on the brand and its founder.  Here is a sampling accompanied by fun photos of Lilly back in the 1970’s.  We start with Ralph Lauren‘s comments:

“Lilly Pulitzer created a very distinct look — her personal style of bright colors and prints has an important place in fashion.”

And this from Kate Spade….

“Lilly Pulitzer was one of the first to take a personal look and lifestyle and turn it into a brand. Her cheery and colorful prints are much imitated, but she is a true original.”

As well as Isaac Mizrahi

“Lilly Pulitzer is one of the few designers worthy of copying. You can’t be an American designer without a little nod to Lilly.”

Reed Krakoff (the Grand Poohbah at Coach) has memories similar to those you probably have:

“One of my earliest memories of fashion is my mom wearing a lime green printed shift dress at our country club in Weston, Connecticut. Lilly Pulitzer was a summer uniform and always defined summer style.”

Our favorite quote is probably this one from Jonathan Adler:

“Lilly Pulitzer makes everyone look happier, richer and more fun-loving than they probably are. Lilly equals sunshine.”

TP has never been to the Mother Ship in Pennsylvania:

Nor have we visited the Lilly store at King of Prussia mall, practically in the backyard of Lilly HQ:

Remember the 50th Anniversary Lilly Pulitzer Jeep we showed previously? Well, here at the Prepatorium we  periodically queried the Princess Consort, asking if he thought anyone was ordering up the Special Edition vehicle. (Of course, he loves queries of this nature in all their profundity and thought-provoking significance.)

It turns out people *have* been buying the Limited Edition Jeep:

“About 70 of the Jeeps were preordered and, at $25,000 a pop, some of the Signature store owners will not only be driving one, but they are also able to sell them to their customers.”

Still to come? A Florida’s Natural orange juice carton done in one of the signature Pulitzer prints. An altogether remarkable story, quintessentially American with its ups and downs, and its happy ending for the company’s founder. Although she no longer owns the company, Lilly is still on hand as a consultant; her design influence and imprint can be seen everywhere.

The WWD special edition was written primarily by Julie Naughton with contributions from Dianne M Pogoda, and they did a bang-up job IOHO.

Lilly Jubilee Update, Scratch ‘n Sniff the Sexiest Man Alive. Seriously.

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday!

Both TP and TSU (the Spousal Unit, aka The Princess Consort) are due at a relatively high-profile volunteer/charitable function tonight, so we are going to be speedy.

By far the nicest part of opening the Preppy Princess store is meeting so many warm and wonderful people online, many of them through this goofy blog.  One of our newer friends is the way-too-cool Miss Cassoulet Cafe, and not just because she has bestowed upon us the Superior Scribbler award! Oh my! Her extraordinary stories and writing skills make it a must for TP and we are guessing you will enjoy stopping by as well.

Merci, La Cassoulet Cafe

Merci, La Cassoulet Cafe

Although Miss Cassoulet is a wonderful read, we were a little concerned by her comment following our post, A Tiffany Christmas, as it indicates she may believe us to be possessed of a fashionable perspective.  A stylish eye. An on-trend outlook.

We don’t know how to break the news that TP is not only deficient in this arena, some consider her staid (translated: bore-ing), challenged (translated: puh-thetic) and much too preppy (translated: apparel & accessories so bright they glow in the dark) style to be more than a little challenged.  So the young and chic set must pop over to Miss Cassoulet‘s Cafe and advise her on the boots.

Now, there are Award Rules attached to this lovely event:

  • Each Superior Scribbler must in turn pass The Award on to 5 Bloggy Friends.
  • Each Superior Scribbler must link to the author & the name of the blog from whom he/she has received The Award.
  • Each Superior Scribbler must display The Award on his/her blog, and link to This Post, which explains The Award.
  • Each Blogger who wins The Superior Scribbler Award must visit this post and add his/her name to the Mr. Linky List. That way, we’ll be able to keep up-to-date on everyone who receives This Prestigious Honor!
  • Each Superior Scribbler must post these rules on his/her blog

Here are six fabulous blogs we always look forward to reading, places we think you will enjoy visiting:

  • Lipstick at the Mailbox is an outstanding writer, with perspective we always appreciate;
  • Landlocked Mermaid shares wisdom, recipes and more when she isn’t doing her incredible commute!
  • We are always ready for a Piece of Coconut Cake, especially when it is the sugar-free, lo-cal and high-fun version provided by Miss Coco.
  • Witty, erudite and lots of fun describe Misadventures of a Newlywed, and she has started selling some more-than-fun goodies online!
  • Tickled Pink and Green is forever brightening our day with her preppy style tips and great reading list;
  • From tutus to the tooth fairy, Momx2 shares snippets of life we love to read.

Merci beaucoup Miss Cassoulet!

Whatever you do, don’t forget to leave a comment on something for which you are grateful so you are entered in the Great Giveaway! That’s all it takes to be entered to win *very* cool prizes from the Preppy Princess shop, like the Perfect Circle Apron with matching gloves, and a set of our Trey’s Stripes notecards, that will be personalized just for you!

Has everyone heard who People’s Sexiest Man in the Galaxy is?

Courtesy People Magazine

Courtesy People Magazine

What you may not have know about yet is People’s special scratch ‘n sniff version of the annual issue. The always-sharp Dylan Stableford at Folio Magazine asks:

“Ever wonder what Michael Phelps smells like?”

In his story about People’s scented pages he tells us:

“The magazine, which hits newsstands on Friday, includes a section dubbed “Sexy Scents” with “scratch-n-sniff” photos of Gossip Girl actor Chace Crawford Ed Westwick, film actor Taye Diggs, Law & Order star Chris Meloni and U.S. Olympic Team swimmer Michael Phelps—each of whom “describe the fragrance that makes them feel their sexiest.”

Even allowing for a rather rugged week, Mr. Westwick’s ‘scentiments’ on ‘essential oils’ are simply beyond our grasp. BTW, Mr. Phelps ranks in the Top 10.

Lance Staedler/People Magazine

If you would like to read more without us spoiling things, just click here.

NOTE: Mr. Stableford’s story refers to Chace Crawford, however, we *think* he means Ed Westwick who is prominently featured in the photos on People’s site. We are double-checking this, if anyone knows definitively, please let us know!

Please forgive us as we make an executive decision: we are revisiting our distaste for discussing or mentioning the “M word” here at the Palace. It appears the financial markets aren’t going to be self-correcting, or be corrected by outside influences for that matter, at least not in the near future. Therefore we acknowledge we have to adjust our standards and display a little more flexibility in our perspective when dealing with this issue. Indeed.

So here is an item related to one’s bank balance: this story in yesterday’s Journal discloses that despite recent interest cuts, many of the credit card companies are charging users higher rates and increased fees. From the story:

“Banks had already been tightening the screws on people with less-than-perfect credit in recent months. Now, even customers who pay their bills on time will find it more expensive to carry a balance.”

While we are extremely grateful this is not an issue for us at this point in time, we are simply staggered that the same companies who just escaped closer regulatory scrutiny and penalties are now back to their old habits.  TP recognizes that for many in these trying times; their MonsterCard is not being used for luxuries, but for life’s necessities like food, medicine, gasoline.

“The bank will also start charging a new $10 monthly service fee to some cardholders who have been carrying large balances for at least two years, while raising their monthly minimum payments…”

Are we deranged? Or is this what the companies should be doing? And remember, TP is a capitalist with a capital ‘C’, we are not opposed to growing companies and profits, but there is also a principle of ethics involved here.

For today’s Pretty in Pink we share information on the Lilly Pulitzer anniversary contest.  The Jubilee Jet Setter contest looks like loads of fun, and the Perfectly Pink passport is too cute.

Also recently added to the oh-so-improved Lilly website, the two 50th Anniversary Jubilee prints.  In both Bananarama

Lilly Pulitzer Bananarama

… as well as Lagoon Blooms

Lagoon Blooms

Lilly Pulitzer Lagoon Blooms

…something is hidden.  As explained on the company’s website

“We have added 50th and/or JUBILEE in every print. Just like you ‘look for the Lilly’ in every print, these JUBILEE Prints will be selling on ebay in 50 years as THE Lilly prints to have.”

Oh.  Actually, we did not toddle over to our local Lilly recently hoping to purchase something we could use, save, and sell on eBay. Honestly.

Oh well, that doesn’t detract from all the the fun things we *did* see at Lilly!

Happy weekend!
