Ralph Lauren & Brooks Brothers Expand Collections, Kennedy Mini-Series Finds a Home

Hello-Hello, happy, sunny day!

When composing the portion of yesterday’s post about the storm we presumed that would be the extent of our dealings with the matter.  Silly Princess.  The abundance of amazing images prompts just a bit more coverage, with thanks to our treasured readers for your gracious tolerance of our tedious fascination mild interest in the topic.

First, a photo from New Hampshire that gives new meaning to “Park & Ride”.

Okay, we have had enough of the folderol, we move on.

Our next item on the agenda, Brooks Brothers’ expansion of its Home Collection.

The growth of the line was noted in this story in Home Accents Today. The group now includes a broad selection of lampshades.

Brooks Brothers

Very much in keeping with the Brooks image and product line, the shades invoke visions of pinstripe suits, button downs and silk repp ties.  Below, Cotton Oxford Pleated Chandelier shades.

The Table Top category has been expanded as well; below we show a piece from the company’s partnership with the National Audubon Society, a beautiful Dessert Platter.

Brooks Brothers

In the Help Me Understand category we do have a few entrants, including the Asanoha Plate.

Brooks Brothers

The plate is more than attractive, with an appealing design. Nor do we have any quarrel with the necessity for The Consort the staff to wash the plate by hand, after all it is hand-painted. Our confusion stems from the logo; why would anyone want to display the retailer’s Golden Fleece on their dishes?

The pillow selection remains much the same as when the group was launched,the Striped Pillow collection is still very stylish.

Brooks Brothers

We spotted one addition to this group.

Brooks Brothers

For our thoughts on this item, just scroll back up and re-read the Help Me Understand section.  Overall we find lots to like in the expanded line, it is a stellar representation of the brand’s classic heritage. While not personally looking for gray flannel lampshades, we do think there are many places they will be simply perfect. (If desirous of more background on the collection, click here for one of our more in-depth posts on the topic.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Our other fashion morsel involves expansion for Ralph Lauren.  In a story about the designer’s fall preview, WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) explains:

“New this season is a distinct denim collection under the Black Label Denim moniker, as well as an expanded accessories assortment that covers shoes, leather goods and watches.

Here are some of George Chinsee’s photos that accompany the story.

Back to Jean Palmiere’s story:

“The new Black Label Denim component is designed to provide a “sexy, hip weekend look” for the customer who is comfortable in the label’s more-tailored offering. “It’s all aimed at that guy and takes him from formalwear to jeans.” Coated cargo pants and jeans with both skinny and wide legs were blended with cashmere sweaters and leather jackets.

Lauren said he decided to offer this collection after standing inside his Madison Avenue store and seeing all the women coming in to shop wearing jeans. “I realized we don’t have high-quality, high-fit denim,” he said. “So we did it for men and women. I wanted to make it a full business on a high level.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have an update on an earlier story, the highly controversial “Kennedys” mini-series, the Hollywood Reporter has more:

“The controversial miniseries will world premiere on April 3 on the ReelzChannel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.”

Via Reelz Channel

We anticipate this will start viewers scrambling as they try to sort out where the network is on their cable and satellite systems, if it is carried at all.  Click here to visit the Reelz website.

With that, goodbye until next time, we hope your day is sunny and bright!

When It’s Lilly or Louder & When a Royal-to-Be Wears Black

Hello-Hello, happy beginning of a bright and shiny new week.

We begin with the surprise cancellation of the History’s Channel big movie project, The Kennedys.

A&E/HIstory Channel

The eight-part miniseries was scheduled to air this spring, featuring Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear as a young Jackie and John Kennedy. That changed late Friday, the Times’ Art Beat story has more:

“A big-budget miniseries about John F. Kennedy’s presidency that was criticized for its historical accuracy before it was even filmed will not be shown on the History channel, the cable network has announced.”

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story:

“…the project drew fire from the political left and some Kennedy historians. Even before cameras rolled, a front-page New York Times story last February included a sharp attack from former John F. Kennedy adviser Theodore Sorensen, who called an early version of the script “vindictive” and “malicious.”

Splash News

As of this writing, the series is still slated to launch in Canada March 9.

Those intrigued by Jackie Kennedy may enjoy Friday’s post, our interview with bestselling author Pamela Keogh on her new book, Are You a Jackie or a Marilyn?

Something many readers have already seen or heard about, but not something we want to ignore altogether, the Red Cross Young Friends Beach Bash ten days ago. The dress code was simple: “Lilly or louder,” obviously not a problem for Lilly Pulitzer CEO Jim Bradbeer and Carol Bradbeer.

Alexia Fodere for The Wall Street Journal

Here’s a snippet of the Journal’s party story, It’s Preppy Prints at Pulitzer Party:

“PALM BEACH, Fla.—It may look like it from the outside, but not everyone wears Lilly Pulitzer in Palm Beach.

That noted, if a party in town is sponsored by the fashion company and run by one of Ms. Pulitzer’s grandsons, you can bet for sure there will be enough tropical preppy prints to make you dizzy.”

Below, the grandson referenced in the story, Bobby Leidy with Terri Mersentes, one of the gala’s chairwomen.

Debbie Schatz/Palm Beach Daily News

More from the Journal’s story:

“(Down in Palm Beach—and probably only down in Palm Beach—there’s a bit of a rivalry between new Lilly and old Lilly.)

“This is the anti-black tie of the season,” Mr. Leidy, who has been chairman of the event for the last four years and stressed the importance of the Red Cross in the area, which is often afflicted by hurricanes. (His brother, Chris, an underwater photographer, was also there.) “Lilly is synonymous with old Palm Beach, and I think people want to be a part of what it was back then. Look around at all the Lilly here! It’s just as cool as it was 30 years ago.”

Another couple at the party.

Debbie Schatz/Palm Beach Daily News

This is considered the ‘junior event’ to one of the season’s biggest social gatherings in Palm Beach, the International Red Cross Ball, deemed “the party” of the year.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We move on to this weekend’s royal news, the ensemble sported by Kate Middleton at a friend’s wedding. From The Daily Mail:

“Beneath a tailored velvet dress coat by Libelula, she wore an elegant above-the-knee dress with a sheer neckline tapering to a silver clasp, an outfit completed by a black pillbox hat with an intricate fascinator, plum-coloured shoes and matching clutch bag.

Big Pictures via The Daily Mail

In some quarters much is being made of the sheer top worn by Miss Middleton, who celebrated her last birthday as a commoner Saturday, she is 29.

The Sun

The coat designer, Libelula, also does bridal gowns.
We believe Miss Middleton’s coat is the silk velvet Dulwich, available on the Libelula website.
In addition to the sheer top, the young lady’s choice of black for a wedding is under scrutiny. The circumstances are reminiscent of an eyebrow-raising appearance made by Prince William’s mother, Lady Diana Spencer, when she made a high-profile appearance shortly after her engagement to Prince Charles was announced.

The Daily Mail

The daring black silk taffeta gown by David and Elizabeth Emanuel set some tongues to wagging.

The Daily Mail

Frankly, we think both looked stunning.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A final note involving these lovelies:

Murray's Toggery

We had no idea Murray’s was offering a driving moc, they look just delightful, and ever-so-comfy. Does anyone have a pair, are they are wonderful as they look? Our expiring mind is dying to know.

With that, we hope everyone enjoys a splendiferous Monday!

J .Crew’s Movie Star Models & Preppy is Back. Again.

Hello-Hello, welcome to a Friday!

We begin with news of J. Crew’s upcoming advertising campaign, featuring something different for the retailer, the cast of a movie as models.

Courtesy J. Crew

That would be the cast of ‘The Romantics,‘ with stars Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Rebecca Lawrence, Jeremy Strong and Adam Brody. Below, Ms. Holmes and Mr. Duhamel.

Courtesy J. Crew

Does anyone remember the J. Crew Dawson’s Creek campaign from ten years ago (shown on the left)? Below right we see Malin Akerman, Josh Duhamel, and Ms. Holmes.

As the AP reports, this is more than a slightly different group of models.

“”The Romantics” and J.Crew don’t just dabble in product placement — although some of the costumes were indeed J.Crew. The retailer is serving as a bona fide marketing partner…”

Ms. Holmes looks fetching in ever image we have seen, here is one more photo from the upcoming campaign.

Courtesy J. Crew

We look forward to seeing the campaign’s impact on sales.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We visit a few more stories prompted by the upcoming release of True Prep from Lisa Birnbach & Chip Kidd.  Ms. Birnbach of course, is best known for The Original Preppy Handbook.  A Newsday story from earlier this week declares “After 30 years, preppy style is back“. Ahem.  Should we start a pool speculating on how many times this statement will be made in the next two months as publicity for the new book intensifies? (Of course we shan’t, as ladies never engage in such nefarious activity as gambling (the horror), but it is tempting, no?)

“Granted, it’s not as if navy blazers or argyle ever really went away. But this fall the look seems reinvigorated by new lines.”

The Newsday story is viewable by subscription only, but we thought it merited sharing. Here is a bit more:

But this fall the look seems reinvigorated by new lines (Brooks Brothers‘ Fleece, now for girls as well as boys), and old standbys (Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines).The neo-preppy look is “less stuffy, more active,” says Fleece designer Nikki Kule..”

Of more interest perhaps, this delightful essay from a Charlotte Observer reader,”In Pursuit of Preppy“.

“Arriving as a naive freshman, my designers of choice were JC Penney or Bobbie Brooks. And when I stepped foot on campus my first day, I was speechless. My wardrobe was woeful compared to my fellow classmates’.

Labels of choice were Talbots, LL Bean and Ralph Lauren.”

Goodness, seeing the Bobbie Brooks name brings back memories! Kim Furiate wrote the essay, and our bonnet is off to her for sharing such a wonderful tale.

“I learned what madras plaid was and how little whales spewing water could look very cool embroidered on a guy’s chinos. It was here, too, that I was exposed to a riotous Lilly Pulitzer print on a simple shift dress an upperclass Kappa Kappa Gamma was wearing. In small-town Ohio, it was next to impossible to find acid-pink-and-lime clothing. I wanted that dress desperately.”

This is one we highly recommend, with pleasure.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with a quick reminder about today’s unveiling of 3 new lines from Le Boutique Targét, although the collections are not available at your local store or at Target’s online site.  As previously reported, the pieces from John Derian, Mulberry & Tucker for Target were just launched at noon on Gilt, the off-price members only site. Below, a few of the offerings from Mulberry for Target.

The Mulberry group arrives in-store and online October 10.

Here are two Tucker for Target pieces, the Metallic Boucle Detailed Dress ($59) and the Floral Print Woven Dress ($39).

This line from designer Gabby Basora will be offered starting on September 12.

And two items from the John Derian line, four Acrylic Tumblers ($9.96) and the melamine Bugs Appetizer Plates ($7.96).

The Derian line will be available at Target September 5.

One advisory for those interested in any of the lines as available on Gilt, the sales kicked off at noon and some items are already sold out; sooner as opposed to later may be the wisest method for this particular event. If in need of an invitation, just click here.

With that we take time to say ‘Thank You’ for popping in, we do adore our treasured readers, and hope everyone enjoys a splendid weekend!

The Business of Preppy, Frette Kinda’ Sorta’ Goes Outlet, Logo Atrocities

Hello-Hello! Happy Summertime everyone!

We jump back into the daily drill taking a quick glance at the Business of Preppy as we refer to it here at the Prepatorium.  Most true-blue preps are comfortable in their own skin, returning to the brands they were raised with again and again, while occasionally adding a new contributor to their personal style mix.  The overwhelming majority of classic ‘preppy brands’ have always provided outstanding value in exchange for one’s investment, be it a suit from Brooks Brothers or a belt from LL Bean.

The business of marketing to preps alongside ‘faux preps’ (or those aspiring to same) is particularly daunting during These Challenging Times. Many of us marked the loss of classic stationer Mrs. John L. Strong with sadness last week. For those unfamiliar with the brand, this description in the NY Times story suffices:

“Mrs. John L. Strong was the stationer of choice for well-heeled brides and socialites. They were in good company.

Other customers included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (the Duchess had her crest engraved in royal blue), Pat Nixon and Mamie Eisenhower, Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, and Vogue’s editor, Anna Wintour.”

Below, a photo from last winter’s Forbes story on the company and its CEO, Nanette Brown:

PHOTO: Dennis Golonka/Forbes

PHOTO: Dennis Golonka/Forbes

Sniff, sniff. (Psst, does anyone have a tissue?)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Another outstanding story in the Times references changes in strategy for a locale generally isolated from previous economic downturns, the Hamptons:

“The Hamptons wants you to perceive it as conforming to the spirit of these hard times and not to caricature it as the flashy, traffic-choked, over-the-top playground it has increasingly become.”

“Raw glitz is out, confirmed Valerie Smith, owner of the Monogram Shop on Newtown Lane here, where napkins imprinted with “Reduced Circumstances” are selling well. “I didn’t order the $2,500 Italian backgammon board this year, which I sold three of the summer before last,” she said.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And then we have news that Frette has opened an online outlet. (Gasp. The horror!)

The Italian purveyor of luxury linens is doing the ‘outlet store’ online only; it opened May 15 and closes at 6pm EDT June 15, so shop early, shop often, but shop soon if so inclined.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Marketing in this day and age also involves using all available tools, something that has challenged preppish retailer J. Crew.  While the issue seems to be significantly reduced, Crew’s inability to manage basics at their online store is well-documented, approaching infamy in some annals of marketing nightmares.

Now the company’s blogging policy is under the microscope by the folks over at Media Bistro, although the story indicates the primary concern for J. Crew policymakers is likely micro-blogging site Twitter. However, as the story notes:

“If J.Crew’s official Twitter efforts are an indication, they have a lot of work to do to shake out their social voice. McAuliffe’s email signature finishes with @JCrew_Insider which stands at 299 followers, 1 following, and 7 updates at the time of this post.”

As of this writing that number is 334. The last @JCrew_Insider Twitter post is dated more than a month ago, April 21st, mentioning the retailer’s Malibu store opening. If tweeting store openings is a priority, at least one mention of the company’s Hamptons locations should be made.

(In the interest of full disclosure,  the Princess is on Twitter and loves it, as are many of our fabulous blogging friends.)

Today we have two entries from the land of logo abominations, the first dubbed The Ugliest Rolls Royce Ever by the witty writers at Luxuo.

The second item may be familiar to readers, it was featured in Vogue‘s June issue, the Last Look page.

Yes, silly season is still with us. The Fendi bicycle is available in two versions, one selling for $9500 (removable fur saddlebags and other accoutrements) while the budget version (hee-hee) is merely $5900.  The lower-priced model does include Fendi’s Selleria leather accessories, a leather GPS navigation holder, key & bike chain cover. (In all candor, we do this second entry rather tongue-in-cheek, as there simply isn’t lots of logoing going on; it was all about the flow of words, the perfect segue, in a manner of speaking. Heh-heh.)

But we have good news: a new entry to the luggage market will not be triggering a case of logophobia for almost any of our tastefully-inclined readers.  Okay, for our clue, it’s time for a show of hands: how many were raised toting about Hartmann bags?

Aw, you guessed already! The collaboration between Brooks Brothers and Hartmann luggage quietly debuted last week:

Brooks Brothers

The official launch is slated for this week, but if shopping now, there is special introductory pricing.

Well dollfaces, it’s time for today’s quiz: what classic brands do you swear by? What new discoveries have you made? Any major disappointments along the way? Do tell, we’re dying to know.

This is Scary, Saks Shipping Offer, More J. Crew Problems, Suri Cruise is ‘Best’

Hello-Hello from Snow Central!

The Princess is trapped, unable to make her flight to Denver, thanks to a foot of snow in The Great Midwest. Harrumph.

It may be considered good news or not-such-good news depending on one’s perspective, but the weather does allow us to do a fresh post.  We start with an event creating a knot in the stomach and an awful sense of foreboding: the jewelry sale at Saks Fifth Avenue.  We thank the Madison Avenue Spy for the tip on this one. The sale includes this Judith Ripka Pavé Diamond Enhancer:

Judith Ripka, Saks Fifth Avenue

Judith Ripka, Saks Fifth Avenue

Many may be stupefied at TP’s negative anxiety about a sale. At Saks. But many also know upscale department stores like Saks, Bergdorf’s, Neiman’s, etc., do not have jewelry sales. Not. On. Fine. Jewelry.

Not on David Yurman.

Or Ippolita.

Ippolita Ring at Saks

Ippolita Ring at Saks

If a store is financially healthy it would never put an Ippolita 18k Gold Two-Diamond Ring on sale. Would. Not. Happen.

BTW, Saks is doing complimentary free shipping on all orders, as well as offering a gift box and their red ribbon at no charge. Seriously. Just use PROMO code SFAGIFT at checkout.  If you missed yesterday’s post ,it contains a goodly amount of sale and promo code information.

We are off to stir up a Prozac cocktail. A pitcher full.

Another Gossip Girl star has landed a Teen Vogue cover. Leighton Meester is showcased in the February 2009 issue.

We thought you might enjoy her comment on headbands:

“I don’t wear headbands, ever.”

In March co-star Blake Lively graced the magazine’s cover.

In January’s Vogue Ms. Lively is named to a list of the 10 Best-Dressed Women; while the print version of the magazine directs you to the Vogue.com website for more on this (and other stories), we cannot locate anything on the site about this story.

Back to Teen Vogue, the cover promotes “The Punky Preppy Mix.” Hhhmmmm. Just this fall the magazine listed the Top 22 Preppy Essentials, including items from many of the standard stores like Lacoste, J. Crew, and Smythson, as well as newer players: Tory Burch, American Eagle Outfitters, Tommy Hilfiger and others.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of J. Crew... (you know where this is going), we continue to receive email about technical issues and problems with J. Crew’s online store.

This story in Thursday’s Storefront Talkback confirms the continued problems:

“Having suffered outages during Cyber Monday, J.Crew again became unavailable—to at least some prospective customers—for an extended period on Wednesday (Dec. 17). “

The subhead on the article reads “‘Tis the Season to be Jolly, Unless You’re in Charge of J. Crew’s Web site.” Ouch.  The retailer is awarded a lump of coal:

“Over at J.Crew, though, no apologies were offered. For those who know the tortured history of J.Crew and its site launch this summer, perhaps avoiding an apology was wise. This time, the site advised visitors to “stay tuned” and added that “even the best sites aren’t perfect.”

True. But as far as uptime goes, it’s clear that some sites are less perfect than others.”

Double ouch.  While management may be frustrated, customers always have choices, as the fabulous Mrs. Newlywed makes clear in yesterday’s comment:

“…I tried to place an order today for a very much unneeded sweater. The site wouldn’t let me place the order.

So, because after I realized it wasn’t working I didn’t actually NEED the sweater I won’t buy it at all  That is $70.00 they won’t get.

The phone line wasn’t working either.

tisk tisk on J.Crew”

The experience shared by another favorite, Lisa at Very Busy Mom with 4, ended on a more positive note:

“After three calls, I finally got my Crewcuts stuff, and they ended up Fed-exing it. I think they are still having issues–their site is moving very slow! Still love my stuff though.”

Frankly, we remain more than a little stunned the problems are not yet rectified.  For those willing to risk it, this particular sale continues through tonight, offering an additional 20% off with complimentary shipping for orders totaling more than $150; the promo code is MERRY.

An absolutely divine store, J. McLaughlin is also in the midst of a wonderful sale.

Don’t forget to enter our final Giveaway of the year, by leaving a question for The Princess Consort.  Here is a portion of a comment from the Fashion Herald and part of TC’s answer:

“Dear Princess Consort Sir, how does one stop one’s husband from stealing the covers at night? Please help, it’s getting really cold!”

“My dear freezing Fashion Herald – I understand your concern about your husband and his proclivity for stealing the bed covers. In the long term this will cease to be a problem because of global warming. However, we have an immediate situation that demands our complete attention. I will assume your husband has a ______________”

Sunday Snippets: Vineyard Vines Opening, Suri’s Shoes, Rogan for Target Collection Debuts

Springtime… a sleepy Sunday… a feeble mind… it seems all have conspired to make coherent discourse impossible for The Princess today. Sigh. Therefore we are reduced to simply sharing some of those items capturing our attention recently that we thought might be of interest to you.

Suri Cruis Ketie Holmes Vivier shoes

We’ll start with a snippet that belongs in the “Insane & Over-Indulgent Parent” file as well as the “Conspicuous Consumption” category. It seems that Suri Cruise, enchanting daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, was fascinated to some degree with a pair of dashing red flats she noticed when visiting the Vivier store on Madison Avenue last week. Now we have word the company will make their first ever pair of children’s shoes ‘to the child’s liking’ according to Women’s Wear Daily.

The Vineyard Vines expansion continues, with their opening in Georgetown (DC) last week at the former Wet Seal store site on Wisconsin at M. The uber-preppy retailer also also opened their Westport store recently, right on Main Street, taking over what used to be the Talbots Mens shop. Ouch. (A painful example of what happens when one loses touch with their brand and their primary customer, let alone commences putting energy into efforts to attract new customers and grow brand extensions. Double ouch.)

Now it’s time for a few looks from the Rogan for Target Collection, debuting today, and we apologize in advance for our hideous photos. We do start with an image of the designer, Rogan Gregory, followed by pieces from the collection. The collection is described as “…an environmentally-conscious collection of modern silhouettes and nature-inspired prints and patterns“. The Princess must acknowledge she is underwhelmed, hopeful the pieces might look better when seen and touched in person at the Boutique (Target). In all fairness, we admit earthtones have never really been our ‘thing.’ A reminder that the pieces are all done in organic cotton, and still reasonably priced for those watching their fashion budgets.

It would appear simply everyone is interested in the collection, at least when it’s Hollywood and when it is the opening at Barney’s last week for its limited run before the full move to Target nationwide. Below we see Nicky Hilton with the designer. Do we think Ms. Hilton will be spotted wearing the organic collection?
