Les Bal de Debutantes & Hollywood Preppy?

Hello-Hello, welcome to another wacky Wednesday here at the Prepatorium. How wacky? This should give you an idea.

The tree in this photo is normally vertical.

Harrumph. (In reality it is very pretty, we aren’t complaining at all.)

Next on the hit parade, a brief look at last weekend’s Bal des Debutantes at the Crillon.

The Daily Mail

Among those officially being launched into society, Sarah Margaret Qualley, seen below with her mother, actress and model Andi MacDowell.

The annual gala was Saturday, held at the Crillon, as the event name suggests. Tallulah Belle Willis, the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, is another young lady who made her debut. Below we share a twitter photo of the three Willis sisters, from left to right: Rumer, Tallulah and Scout Willis posted by Rumer Willis.

Here is a more formal reminder of the event, this is Sarah Margaret Qualley’s official portrait, she wore a gown by Elie Saab Haute Couture.

A total of 23 young ladies were part of Saturday’s presentation.

Also today, a look at what some might call “Hollywood Preppy”.

Reel Art Press

The topic is examined in a new book, Hollywood and the Ivy Look, more from this story:

In the decade between 1955 and 1965 a coterie of discerning Hollywood hipsters appropriated the incomparable Ivy League clothing of America’s East coast elite. These West Coast actors elevated the Ivy look to the height of cool and defined a quintessentially American male dress code for a new generation of movie audiences.

The new book looks like it would be a wonderful read, certainly ideal on the coffee table, great for kicking off cocktail party conversation.

mptvimages.com via The Sabotage Times

We know someone who might think the photo of Paul Newman is well worth the purchase price for the entire book. More on the new tome from its publishers, Reel Art Press.

From the button-down hip of Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Anthony Perkins to the preppy sensibilities of Woody Allen and Dustin Hoffman; the understated but carefully selected components of the Ivy look didn’t shout ‘look at me’ but instead gave off an image of approachable correctness and laid back confidence.

Much as I adore Sidney Poitier, I am struggling with that particular version of pink and green.

Our Christmas idea for today is from Smathers & Branson.

Smathers & Branson

Needlepoint ornaments are cute as can be, and if you aren’t into making them yourself, the good folks at Smathers & Branson offer a nice selection for your tree, door handle, whatnot.  (My fave is the sailboat.)

When Pink Goes Wrong & What’s The Buzz?

Hello-Hello! We hope everyone is enjoying a lovely almost-officially-summer day, it is beautiful here at the Prepatorium!

We are brief with today’s post, too many commitments again, we shall have to initiate a serious chat with ourselves the Social Secretary.  So we have a series of images to share, all of them timely, all of them hopefully worthy of your time.

We begin with word of the Kate Spade Sale.

Although this is referred to as a ‘sample sale’ in the promotion, we are not using that moniker; as best we know it isn’t a true sample sale with sample merchandise. There are fabulous bargains to be found, and we adore Kate Spade, we just have a minor quarrel with terminology. Below we show two of the delightful deals, both qualify as Pretty in Pink goodies for the day.

However, we must now move on to what we’re terming a Pretty in Pink Tragedy, or “When Pink Goes Wrong”, taking place at today’s Royal Ascot, no less.

Stuart Wilson/Getty

Above we see television host Bear Grylls, in a rather unfortunate choice of colors.  Below, members of the Royal Family on their way to the event, looking rather more elegant.

Tomorrow’s post will feature scads more photo from Royal Ascot, always a delight for those of us fond of fashion.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, a quick mention of an element of the FIFA World Cup that is definitely creating a buzz. (Pun intended.)

AFP/Getty via Wall Street Journal

Yes, it is the dreaded, despised, despicable, detested and disrespected vuvuzela, what we refer to as the soccer horn.  It seems some are bothered by the noise created by the device. The Journal ran a fabulous piece, “Should This Horn Be Banned?” in yesterday’s paper.  From that story:

“Is everyone already exasperated with the Infamous Plastic Horn of Distraction? WE SAID, IS EVERYONE ALREADY EXASPERATED WITH THE INFAMOUS PLASTIC HORN OF DISTRACTION?

There are reports that World Cup organizers are already considering a ban on the vuvuzela, the ubiquitous narrow instrument that’s making every contest in South Africa sound like a ferocious swarm of radioactive bees—or a Hollywood publicists’ luncheon.”

The world is certainly talking about them, below an image from the UK’s First Post.

First Post UK

The Telegraph also runs a series of Vuvuzela Photos of the Day, including this image demonstrating vuvuzela protocol, a solid primer on just when one should blow one’s vuvuzela.

The Telegraph

There are reports microphones are being changed by broadcasters overwhelmed by complaints, suggestions that they be banned, and overall unhappiness on the topic.  Below, a bit of this story from the LA Times:

“Host Broadcast Services, the company that provides the broadcast feed for the World Cup, has doubled its audio filters to reduce the constant blaring buzz of the controversial vuvuzelas.”

All of which have created the perfect storm, a situation The Consort is incapable of ignoring.

Image 'Enhancement' by The Consort

Possibly the first documented case of “Crimes Against Photoshop.”

We leave you with a final thought on the topic from the Wall Street Journal story mentioned above:

“Besides, who are we in the U.S. to complain about vuvuzelas? We gave the world Twitter and Ke$ha.”

Indeed.

Sneak Peek at Isaac’s Line, Lilly & Kate Online Only Sales

Hello-Hello and welcome to the mayhem that is the Prepatorium today, in large part because yesterday we were a tad under the weather. We thank The Consort for stepping in and penning the blog, what a dream of a spouse he is!

We are so woefully behind in personal and professional obligations we fear our pointy little head is about to explode!  Therefore our bloggage will be brief.  We begin with a sneak peek at a line from a designer we adore, Isaac Mizrahi, for a television shopping channel we had never visited, QVC.

mizrahi-qvc03

John Aquino/WWD

It seems the talented designer is using many of the classic design lines he employed at Le Boutique Targèt. Above: the Wool blend duffle toggle coat, $198; cashmere sweater, $88, and taffeta skirt, $60; shoes, $70. We aren’t crazy about this next look; the word ‘matronly’ comes to mind, oui?

mizrahi-qvc02

John Aquino/WWD

We’ll use this next item as today’s Pretty in Pink; the leather Drawstring Bag is expected to be $200.

mizrahi-qvc11

John Aquino/WWD

The Patent Leather clutches are going to be in the $75 range.

mizrahi-qvc12

John Aquino/WWD

Mr. Mizrahi’s collection is also going to include housewares. Below left, the set of Three Vases are going to retail at $75 (the candy dish price isn’t available) and the Bow Plates will be $40 for a set of four.

mizrahi-qvc06mizrahi-qvc09

The talented designer is also going to offer a wide variety of tartan products, including the Cotton Pajama Set, $67, and the Plaid Throw, $49.

mizrahi-qvc04mizrahi-qvc10

A new and nifty option for storage? The Tartan plaid boxes in two sizes at $55 and $70.

For an entirely different look at the popular plaid motif:

John Aquino/WWD

Yes indeedy, that is an edible tartan: the cheesecake will be offered at $40, and the plaid platter at $40.  Yumalicious! Below, Mr. Mizrahi and a model in his Gold paillette tank and silk pants.

John Aquino/WWD

Target still hasn’t ‘replaced’ Mr. Mizrahi as far as we are concerned, they have yet to procure a stellar talent as an in-house designer, although they claim to be content with the status quo in this respect.

The collection launches on QVC December 4 – we may actually tune in for the unveiling.

A few quick Sales & Savings opportunities we must pass along, the first already underway….

ss_newsletter_02

The Kate Spade Sample sale is generally worth a visit, with things like the Bon Vivant zippered Chrissy only $81.

pKSLCI1-6357119t215.

An upcoming chance to enhance one’s walk-in starts Thursday (the 12th), this one courtesy of the good folks at Lilly.

JubileeSaleThis is the first time Lilly Pulitzer is doing an online-only sale; if interested in being able to get a head start on shopping, Lilly Facebook fans will be able to start browsing and buying at 7am Thursday.  Those who subscribe to the Lilly newsletter may begin at 8am, and the sale opens to ‘regular shoppers’ online at 9am.

It seems the success of the online sale might have a direct impact on what is available at the Lilly Warehouse Sale next week, the 19th – 21st.

Finally, we are struggling in our efforts to adapt to life without our dear friends Don and Betty Draper Mad Men every Sunday evening. Below, Jon Hamm and January Jones on the set.

A season that started with such promise ends with the couple having “the talk” with their children.

We shall have to wait until next season to learn about the family’s future, including how little Bobby and Sally Draper handle Daddy’s absence from the family hearth.  Sigh.

For those fond of Ms. Jones, she is hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend. On that note we say g’bye until next time!

Preppish Tidbits, Sneak Peak at Coach Poppy Line

Hello-Hello, Happy Friday!

It is simply fantabulous here at the Prepatorium, although we expect a repeat performance of last night’s raging thunderstorms, they are expected to return this evening.  The booming and crashing always sends Scooter-the-Wonder-Cat straight up in the air and then under the bed, poor thing. It reminds us of when we were a tiny Princess and asked what was going on; at some point we were told the noise was God bowling.  Were you ever told any tall weather tales as a child?

So much happening in the few days we were away! First, a few SOTTs (Signs Of The Times), most of which many readers already know:

  • Eddie Bauer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Wednesday; yesterday a judge gave permission for the company to continue paying employees and vendors.
  • Upscale retailer Ben Sherman announced in May it will no longer carry shoes, last week the announcement came the childrens line will also be discontinued. Below, we’ll use the Sherman women’s Argyle Vest for today’s Adventures in Argyle. (It is quite the bargain, now only $39.99, originally $80.)

++++++++++++++++++++

Other newsy tidbits:

  • The city selected for Tommy Hilfiger’s second ‘American Stories’ ad campaign is our nation’s capital; below, one of the ads.

  • Ralph Lauren’s annual gala celebrating Wimbledon’s start attracted royalty, entertainers, and the fashion crowd last night at Kensington Roof Gardens.  We see Sarah Ferguson with daughters Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice in this photo.

  • There is a new preppy brand on our radar: Jeremy Argyle, recently opened in Soho, but better yet, available online! The company’s Pink Framed Stripe shirt is seen below:

One Sales & Savings reminder we feel obligated to share in light of the ‘additional percentage off’ savings:

The Kate Spade online sample sale ends tonight, but if one scoots over there before midnight, there is an additional 20% off merchandise.

++++++++++++++++++++

We share a few nautically-inclined items today, starting with the Vans Captain Fin anchor tee.  The design is actually the logo for Captain Fin, known for their surfwear.

Vans

And a line we weren’t familiar with that actually sounds rather unusual, the scented tees by Spiff.

Probably not for TP, but that doesn’t mean others can’t enjoy them. Our thanks to the always on-trend Nitrolicious, where we spotted the photo.

Some may recall our previous post on the new Coach Poppy line aimed at a younger, more financially conservative demographic.  The Poppy bags aren’t officially due in stores until June 26th, but we can share a couple of the bags.

The line will include everything from bags and shoes….

to jewelry…

and headbands.

According to a wonderful story in Business Week about the company, price points for the line will run approximately 20% less than other Coach merchandise.

“Poppy is supposed to help move the entire company back to … a more comfortable place, which at Coach means an average price of $290 for a handbag.”

The story by Susan Berfield makes for a great read.

There is also a Coach Facebook page for the new collection.

We’ll leave you with a Pretty in Pink borrowed from the new group.

Happy weekend!

When Being a Princess Goes Bad, Kate Spade Sample Sale,

Hello-Hello everyone!

Today’s post is an exercise in what we refer to as pre-blogging, written in advance of a heavy schedule; we expect we shall be winging our way to The Queen Mother’s as you read this.

Readers can probably guess our reaction to this title for a column in Friday’s Journal:

Bringing Up Princess: Turning Girls Into Narcissists

Immediately our hackles went up as we said to ourselves, “Now wait just one minute.” But upon reading Megan Basham’s column, we find ourselves in agreement with much of her perspective.

“…little to do with indulging sweet princess fantasies and everything to do with catering to over-indulged princess egos.”

Naturally, invoking an anti-prep increased our comfort level:

“Take the popular tween retailer Justice. At malls nationwide, it carries multiple “Princess” tops and accessories that look a lot more like Paris Hilton’s attire than Snow White’s.”

For more on the “trickle-down narcissism” column click here.

One request: let’s not throw the Princess out with the tiara, so to speak?

We have an update on tennis fashion just in time for Wimbledon, direct from our favorite tennis blog, Down the Line Tennis.

Scottish star Andy Murray‘s is expected to wear the ensemble shown above, all classic pieces by Fred Perry, one of Mr. Murray’s sponsors. The look is meant to emulate the styles worn by Mr. Perry in the 1930’s when he won Wimbledon.

A timeless style, and one we adore.  Some say the look is part of a greater campaign to help the sometimes-surly Murray move beyond his anti-English image.

Those interested in something for off-the-court wear may find the company’s accessories appealing, including the Tipped Webbing Belt.

Many readers may already be aware there has been significant speculation as to whether or not Rafael Nadal would play in this year’s tournament; that conversation ended yesterday when he began practicing on one of the famed grass courts.

PHOTO: Bertrand Guy/AFP/Getty

We are still fond of last year’s look as seen above, the shocking pink and gray. Not that we pay any attention to that.  (Actually, we’re such an old fuddy-duddy we still think white is a good color for tennis apparel.)

It does not appear we will see Roger Federer in his famous cardigan again, the one prompting our original Preppy vs. Pirate post.

b_23_federer_10_reuters_k_lamarqueb_24_nadal_118_getty_c_brunskill2

We confess we don’t yet know what Mr. Federer is sporting for a signature look this year.

A quick Sales & Savings note: fly to the Kate Spade Sample Online Sale:

Fiscally-friendly bargains abound, like the Jitney Cashmere Sweater is now $88. The original price was $295.

The sale ends the 19th.

Comedienne Tracey Ullman was the emcee/host for the evening’s festivities; she had a few tongue-in-cheek comments on Michelle Obama’s penchant for apparel from a certain retailer:

““In the short time her husband has been in office, she has already done a tremendous amount to promote the American fashion designers, especially J. Crew,” Ullman crowed. “Is J. here tonight? Mr. Crew? How about Mrs. Crew? Any of the Crew kids? Oh come on, you’d think that they’d be here tonight to show support for J.”

The Ullman quote is courtesy of this story in today’s WWD.  Another designer and retailer of a preppish nature, Tory Burch, wore her own design for the gala.

Lauren Santo Domingo also wore Michael Kors.

PRIVATE SALES: Kate Spade, Polo Ralph Lauren, Barneys, Bergdorf’s, Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus + the Argyle Bicycle!

Hello-hello and Happy Friday!

Additional sales are everywhere it seems, many from retailers with a preppy aesthetic, if you will. We start with the Kate Spade Private Sale. A word of caution: when you click on this link or the image below, you will be taken to a page where you need to register. Not to worry, it’s not like filling out an application for the Country Club; one simply must provide a first name, an email address and zip code. That’s it.

Courtesy Kate Spade

Do not wait too long on this one as it ends on the 14th!  We thought this puffer vest might offer a high snuggle factor.

Barneys is also having a ‘Private Sale,’

Courtesy Barneys

As of this writing there are more than 390 shoe styles on sale just in the shoe department!

At Polo Ralph Lauren the Private Sale is on through Monday, Nov.17….. unless they extend or expand it, which would surprise no one at this point.

And while we adore the Windowpane Plaid Ricky bag, it just seems… well, it feels inappropriate somehow to spend $2400 on a handbag at this point in time.

Ralph Lauren Collection Windowpane Plaid Ricky bag

What do you think? Is TP taking the economy too seriously? Am I wrong on this one?

At Bloomingdale’s there is an additional 30% to 50% off the already-discounted sale merchandise….

Some of it “wear now” merchandise, like this Ralph Lauren Petites “Batya” Cashmere Sweater.

Ralph Lauren Petites Cashmere Sweater

Of course it is also time for the First Call at Neiman Marcus.

Even Bergdorf Goodman is goosing their sale; do not let the “Save as much as 40% Off” fool you. There are *many* items marked down 50%.

We end today with another Argyle Update, this one showcasing the absolutely TDF Electra Holiday Cruiser bicycle at the Gap in their “signature blue argyle pattern.”

Courtesy The Gap

Courtesy The Gap

It is available in two sizes, Adult and Kids.  We can’t imagine how we would react if it were also in pink – we would probably layoff the drivers (heh-heh) and start pedaling around ourselves! (Well, actually, no, I don’t think that is what we would do at all. Not really.)

Today we start a new feature that will pop up every now and again: “Can You Tell It’s Ratings?” as in “oh my gosh sweetie, do you think they are doing this story because it is ratings?” Also known as “sweeps” in our former life, you know what we mean (of course you know what we mean!) ladies, stories that are heavily promoted on local and network news and entertainment programs. Stories that are teased dramatically, breathlessly, that you simply must see, that you cannot miss!

Like this one on ABC….
