Talbots Holiday 2011 and A Few Sales/Savings Opportunities

Hello-Hello, welcome to an absolutely gorgeous day here at the Prepatorium.

It seems like just last week we were engaged in a whineathon of epic proportion desperate for just a taste of spring or summer weather.  Fast forward a few weeks and now many friends find themselves praying for an early fall, it has been that hot or that dry or that wet, or simply that miserable in their corner of the globe. In that spirit we offer an early look at this year’s holiday collection at Talbots.

Women’s Wear Daily attended yesterday’s preview and has the story.

“Inspired by Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball of 1966, Michael Smaldone, Talbots’ chief creative officer, showed a holiday collection on Wednesday that was minimalistic, with a nod to easy Sixties glamour.”

There are some nice, bright jewel tones in the line.

It’s always good to see a splash of color in the middle of winter.

Another angle on the more vibrant colors.

Robert Mitra/WWD

Here are a few of the more casual styles.

Robert Mitra/WWD

It looks like Talbots will continue to grow its workout/athletic/yoga group, an area that remains a very positive story for most retailers. (Full disclosure; your trusty correspondent has a few pieces from this group and they are outstanding.)

Robert Mitra/WWD

There is a wonderful array of pieces in a deep, rich red, perfect for the holidays.

Robert Mitra/WWD

More from the WWD story:

“Smaldone focused on clean shapes, from long column gowns to short A-line dresses, as well as graphic black-and-white elements on looks such as a long houndstooth skirt.”

More in these colors.

Also seen more frequently this time of year, lamé and sequins, with a few animal prints also visible.

Robert Mitra/WWD

There are more jewel tones shown in the holiday accessories.

Robert Mitra/WWD

A few more items.

Robert Mitra/WWD

These are a bit tougher to see, but you can still get an idea of what will be offered.

Robert Mitra/WWD

Many of the styles shown look elegant, although it is obviously difficult to gauge when you can’t feel the fabric, look closely at the cut, the embellishment, etc.  We fervently hope the collection helps the troubled retailer get back on track, we would like to see them around for many years to come.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have a very few Sales and Savings Opportunities to offer.

Kate Spade is taking an additional 25% off sale prices, use promo code SALE25 for the discount. (Today is the last day.)

Brooks Brothers is doing its summer Clearance event.

Vineyard Vines is taking an additional 40% off its sale items, use promo code HOT. One caveat, this morning they have experienced numerous outages and downtime for the website. We’re sure it will be remedied as quickly as possible, but patience might be required.

Basically every apparel & accessories retailer we know of is offering significant discounts at its stores (as well factory/outlet stores) and online.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

One last FYI, we are doing a poll at our sister site What Kate Wore, Kate’s wearing of pantyhose/tights/nylons almost all the time is creating quite the conversation. We would love to know what you think, either by vote or comment or both!

With that, we say thank you for popping in to visit, we cherish each and every reader, knowing you have a gazillion choices when it comes to online reading opportunities. We are grateful you decided to spend a little time with us. 🙂

Brooks Brothers & Kate Spade Fall 2011 & “Swaddler of the Preppy Classes”

Hello-Hello!

We wrap up the majority of our Fall Fashion Week coverage with a look at two lines we love. We begin with the Brooks Brothers presentation for next fall.

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

There are some wonderful looks.  From the Women’s Wear Daily review (subscription required):

“Brooks Brothers wants to embrace another generation of shoppers and it’s quite evident in the fall collection…. refining the classics across men’s, women’s and children’s wear to broaden the audience without taking a 180-degree fashion turn.”

Part of the presentation was set against the backdrop of an autumn tailgate party.

(Love that argyle sweater.) Other pieces were styled in a clubby library atmosphere.

Our friend Christian at Ivy Style was on hand for the showing and has a outstanding look at the line.

Courtesy Ivy Style

A women’s shirt and sweater from the group.

From the retailer’s still-new Fleece line for children.

More styles for the Young Miss or Master of your palace.

Many of the accessories exude the timeless elegance Brooks is known for.

Black Fleece also continues its far “hipper” and trendier styles.

Via Black Fleece Facebook Page

The palette is primarily gray, brown and black.

Although there are a few spots of color.

Overall it looks like a splendid collection, there is a great deal we like. However… (cue the tedious whining) regular readers won’t be surprised to know that we will always take issue with this sort of thing:

Courtesy Ivy Style

It is just so unnecessary, particularly for a company with Brooks’ heritage and pedigree, and especially so when considering the quality of this collection. (Insert sad shake of the head here.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next on our Fashion Week update agenda, Kate Spade for Fall.

Via ShopStyle

The bright colors that are such a signature for this line were evident from the start.  We are presuming the hemlines on both suits will be dropped by several inches once the skirts go into production.

Shoes sure to evoke cries of “Those are daaaaaarling!” could be seen in abundance.

Via ShopStyle.com

As always, the accessories looked superb.

There were pieces in more muted tones.

And there are party styles, something this retailer does so well.

No one will be surprised that today’s Pretty in Pink comes via the company’s fall presentation.

More angles.

Some fabulous photos come via the Audrey Hepburn Complex blog.

Via Audrey Hepburn Complex

Audrey Hepburn Complex is also where we found some great detail shots.

We aren’t the only ones who love this retailer, here is a snippet from today’s WWD story about the woes that Liz Claiborne continues to face and Kate Spade’s role in the company’s future:

“…often painful effort to reinvent Liz Claiborne Inc. has produced a series of businesses that are bleeding money and struggling through turnarounds, and one breakout star that just might be the company’s saving grace: Kate Spade.”

And one more tidbit from Evan Hughes’ story about the company, with a quote from the CEO:

““Kate Spade can no longer be viewed as too small to matter for our company,” McComb told WWD. “The business is very profitable and strong across all channels, all product categories and in all geographies.”

He described it as a “very Web-savvy” brand striving to connect retail and e-commerce.”

We concur wholeheartedly with the assessment of Spade’s web prowess.

BTW, Kate Spade and Tretorn are on sale next week at discounting site RueLaLa, both sales begin on Monday.  (If anyone is in need of an invitation, just click here.)

A few quick hits from lines we simply don’t have the time to review, beginning with the Marc by Marc Jacobs show.

Kathy Willens/AP via The Guardian

Mr. Jacobs created so many divine styles, we highly recommend looking at them over at Fashionologie or Style.com

Carolina Herrera staged a beautiful show.

Via The NY Times.com

Again, so much to see, so little time, visit Vogue or StyleList to see much more from the show.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with a headline from The Observer that made us both chuckle:

Swaddler of the Preppy Classes Picks Flagship

Of course the ensuing conversation went something like this:

TC: Ummm, are you swaddled?

TPP: Evidently not, and from all appearances, neither are you.  Oh, the horror.

The story is about the new Lacoste flagship store, here is a teeny bit from the story just so you don’t think we made this up:

“Popped colors and lavender pants are already the uniform of choice on upper Fifth Avenue. It seems only fitting that preppy designer Lacoste has chosen 608 Fifth Avenue for its national flagship.”

(Do you think they meant “popped” collars?)

Because we are chatting about Lacoste & because we need to revel in spring fashions as opposed to fall (desperately so), here are a few images of the spring Lacoste children’s collection.

Lacoste

The entire group is shown on the company’s Facebook page.

Lacoste

One more scenic shot.

Lacoste

We hope we haven’t disappointed anyone by not having the Ralph Lauren fall collection in today’s post, we will carry that in Monday’s column. Tomorrow we have a special treat, an update from our Royal Correspondent, Queen Bee Swain.

Until next time, may the sun be shining on your corner of the globe!

Preppish Bargains & Giant Hermès Kelly Bag

Hello and happy Friday to all looking forward to the weekend.

Most of today’s post is more of our inane nattering light and easy, with a focus on opportunities to maintain fiscal responsibility while also taking care of some Christmas and/or Hanukkah shopping. But first we look at an upcoming estate sale, something that is inexplicably provoking a touch of melancholy here at The Prepatorium. (Yes, we know, we momentarily went off the rails there, veering dangerously into the TMI Zone. Goofy Princess.)

At any rate, it is tomorrow’s Dominick Dunne Estate auction that prompts the sadness. For some reason, the item we are most saddened to see is part of Lot #94, “Mexican Embossed Leather Box”.

Via Artfact

It isn’t the box itself, but rather, the collection of cufflinks.  They seem so very personal, selling them to the highest bidder in such a public forum feels… odd. (At best.) The Times carried an article about the auction last week.

“…the colorful remnants of his estate have been consigned by his family to Stair Galleries in Hudson, N.Y., which will auction them on Nov. 20.

Visitors to the gallery’s ground floor will enter what Colin Stair, the auction house’s president, called a “mini-re-creation of an era of Dunne’s life” at Clouds, his 1961 colonial-style saltbox in Hadlyme, Conn., which he bought in 1993. He had fled Hollywood more than a decade earlier, his career as a movie producer sunk by alcoholism and financial ruin.”

Of course, the reality is that the auction isn’t what we find troubling, not at all.  The dejection comes from realizing Mr. Dunne is gone.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now we shall careen wildly move to the aforementioned Sales & Savings, beginning with Kate Spade.  The Barrow Street Anabel is now $137 (from $275), perfect to carry on this winter’s getaway.  A possibility as a party pump this season, the Karlisle in black is now $224, discounted from its initial selling price of $320.

We are partial to the Gold Coast Kip bag (originally $225 and now $112); the Moon River Pearl Bracelet will perk up any number of styles, it originally sold at $195 and is now $136.

Brooks Brothers is promoting its Thanksgiving Clearance Event.

Brooks Brothers

And Tory Burch is touting the “Divine Sale”. (?)

ToryBurch.com

There are many season-appropriate offerings like the Simone Cardigan (initially selling at $225, now $112.50), available in several colors, and the Nolde Turtleneck (originally $125, now $62.50).

Shoes are also marked down, including the Afrikan Reva flat (originally priced at $235, now $165).

The selection appears fairly broad.

Barneys Not-So- Private Sale is also underway.

Barneys New York

Offerings include a few Pretty in Pink goodies, like the Hooded Puffer Coat (Now $66 from $110) for Babies and Toddlers, or the Cupcake Fleece Jacket (originally $55, now $33), also in Infants and Toddlers.

We also have word about a significant sale at The Gap, tomorrow only (Saturday, 11/20/10).

“This Saturday only save 40% off the entire store, including sale merchandise. All existing Gap, BR or Old Navy cardmembers will receive 45% off when they use their Gap, BR or Old Navy Credit Card. Or if you apply and are approved for a GapCard you can receive 40% + 15% off!”

That would include styles like these for the tiny preps at your palace.

Note this is in-store only, not online, at least not as of now. We thank our Twitter friend ap for the tip.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In honor of the delightful Summer is a Verb we share a glance at an amazing Kelly Bag from Hermès. (We credit her for playing a significant role in helping the company achieve record-breaking profits this year. Heh, heh, heh.)

Via Fashion Tribes

The massive ‘handbag’ is actually part of an interactive exhibit the legendary firm has undertaken with Selfridges, a UK retailer we have enjoyed visiting now and again.  From the Selfridges news release:

“Bringing new meaning the term ‘oversized handbag’, The Kellydoscope is a giant version of the iconic Hermès Kelly bag – named after movie star and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly.

Made exclusively from the label’s leather and toile fabrics, The Kellydoscope features a side door through which you step, to find out what its like inside a handbag.”

Via Selfridges

We would be happy with the reversible Double Sens. After all, reversible = practical, oui?

Hermès

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with an unusual Pretty in Pink, something we have dubbed “When Snails Attack”.

Via Miami New Times

45 of these massive monsters can now be seen allover Miami Beach. Formally, the snails are part of an international art project; here is more from the official website:

“Strategically placed throughout the city, this engaging public art series is designed to inspire a community-wide conversation about the importance of recycling and its environmental impact, while leaving a potent artistic trace on the Miami Beach community.”

Previously they were spotted in Milan.

The snails will be ‘on the beach’ until January 3.

On that whimsical note, may everyone enjoy weekends filled with love and laughter!

Fashion Week: Kate Spade, Lacoste & More

Hello-Hello, we hope everyone enjoyed a splendid weekend.

As we previously mentioned, Fashion Week is well underway, and today we start with one of the original prep lines, Lacoste.  This is the final collection for creative director Christopher Lemaire, the designer is off to Hermès.

Talaya Centeno/WWD

We continue to appreciate the clean lines and lack of frou-frou from this brand.

PHOTOS: Talaya Centeno/WWD

Not all of the strongly geometric pieces felt right, either the proportions or fit or design just didn’t seem right.

PHOTOS: Talaya Centeno/WWD

We do enjoy a bold graphic approach, and particularly the top in the center photo above. It is interesting to see the higher waist enjoy a continued return to prominence, for both men and women.

PHOTOS: Talaya Centeno/WWD

From the Telegraph (UK):

“Pink and orange striped knits injected the sizzle factor…”

PHOTOS: Talaya Centeno/WWD

Both looks seen above, and the styles shown below have solid elements.

PHOTOS: Talaya Centeno/WWD

Overall the collection showed a lot of promise and we liked seeing models that were actually smiling on the runway, what a nice change. We are intrigued to see how Mr. Lemaire fares at Hermès.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also shown this weekend, Band of Outsiders, a line we have chatted about on several occasions.  The presentation included a look at the new “Girl” line from designer Scott Sternberg, offering far more feminine looks than his “Boy by Band of Outsiders” collection.

Below, a better look at two of those styles from the new line.

And a few of the men’s styles.

One more ensemble:

We move on, taking a look at the Kate Spade show, held Friday morning.  We liked many of the looks captured by WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) for their brief review.

PHOTOS: John Aquino/WWD

We adore both of the dresses show above, they definitely have a 1950’s and/or 1980’s vibe.  More from the WWD story:

“… all the looks were worn with complementing socks and kitten-heeled sandals. In accessories, she layered beaded necklaces and bangles and added playful belts with brooch closures, new this season. Standouts were the oversize, square bead-encrusted neon clutches.”

PHOTOS: John Aquino/WWD

Again, both looks have many appealing elements; the two final ensembles.

Below we share a closer look at accessories, the pictures are via this post at Bloginity.

Via Bloginity

We love the whimsical iPhone covers seen above, and both of the items seen next, they also definitely have a retro flair.

And two more bags via Bloginity.

A quick Sales & Savings reminder for Kate Spade fans:

Kate Spade

The promotion offering an additional 25% off sale priced merchandise ends tonight at midnight.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many readers are fond of Gossip Girl (or the fashions shown on the program), making its reappearance tonight.  It was a busy weekend for many of the stars, with several attending Fashion Week functions. Below left, Ed Westwick at the Tommy Hilfiger show, and on the right, Chace Crawford is seen with Naomi Campbell at the Fashion’s Night Out event held at Dolce & Gabbana.

Another star, Blake Lively, was at the Toronto Film Festival for the première of her upcoming movie, ‘The Town’. Left, Ms. Lively at a news conference and on the right, at the screening.

Ms. Lively’s Gossip Girl costar and real-life paramour, Penn Badgley was also at the Festival, but not at “The Town” showing; the screening of his upcoming film “Easy A,” was at the same time. Here he is seen with costar Emma Stone.  Another star of “The Town” on hand, Jon Hamm, seen with longtime partner Jennifer Westfeldt. (One almost needs a diagram to keep up with this group.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few quick True Prep notes, starting with authors Lisa Birnbach and Chip Kidd signing books at the Bloomingdale’s FNO event (there are loads of photos on the True Prep FB page).

Also, Brooks Brothers is devoting a new section of its website to the recently released book.

Brooks Brothers

The special edition True Prep tie from Vineyard Vines is now available online.

We do think Henry (from the crest on the book’s cover) looks rather distinguished in silk.  Sadly, there are grumblings from some quarters; evidently others here at the Prepatorium think they should be showcased in silk.

Silly Tilly in silk? We think not.

Doubtful; somehow her blue blankie diminishes the dignity factor.

On that goofy look, we say g’bye until next time!

And The Winner Is… “Gossip Girls Haunt the Hamptons”

Hello-Hello, welcome to an insanely busy day here at the Prepatorium!  (There is a positive side to the mayhem, you have a mercifully brief post with far less insipid nattering on insightful commentary from these quarters!)

We said we would share the Top Ten posts here on the blog when we reached our millionth blog view. Here they are:

ThePreppyPrincess.wordpress.com

That number one post, Gossip Girls Hit the Hamptons, dates all the way back to June of 2008 and featured the cast shooting on location.

JustJared.Buzznet.com

We used the photo full size of Ed Westwick to make a point, here is a bit of the original post:

“We have never, ever, actually known a human being who would get off the train attired like this. You are in a suit, or you are in khakis and a blazer, or you are wearing jeans and a button down, you know the routine. Three argyles all at once and spectators and the shorts…? No. Not even close.”

The three argyle items are the sweater, socks and tie.  The post also included actor Chace Crawford in a swarm (gaggle? herd?) of teenage girls.

Chace Crawford Gossip Girl 2008 Hamptons

JustJared.Buzznet.com

The rest of the cast is also seen in that particular post. Season four is confirmed, the next location shoot for the cast and crew is Paris.

The rest of the list seems to make sense… Olympic Uniforms from Polo Ralph Lauren, Sperry & J. Crew, various perceptions and interpretations of the preppy aesthetic.  Hhhmmm. (But Gossip Girl in the Hamptons as the most popular post…? Yikes.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Before leaving you, we have some Sales and Savings we simply must share, it is that time of year as we approach a holiday weekend. Here we go:

  • 40% off entire purchase at Brooks Brothers factory stores tomorrow (Thursday, 5/27/10) through the 31st
  • Kate Spade offers an additional 25% off all Sale merchandise now through June 1st and free ground shipping on all orders
  • Elaine Turner is offering 33% off through Memorial Day; use promo code MEMORIAL33
  • Nordstrom’s Half-Yearly Sale for women and children is underway now
  • Gucci is allowing customers to reserve items online from their sale that starts June 1; click here for details
  • J. Crew’s Summer Sale is underway, we cannot offer any insight on markdowns
  • Lacoste is promoting up to 70% off at their outlet stores
  • The sale at Saks offers up to 60% off original prices (apparently one should disregard the graphic they show promoting “30-40% off”)
  • This one is just in from our friend at the oh-so-chic Beladora Jewelry: use discount code BHB to receive 10% off your purchase at Beladora, or 5% off your purchase of the fab vintage jewels offered at Beladora 2. (The divine image below is from Beladora 2.)

Beladora2.com

We know there are more that have come into the electronic in-bin, but we are so behind schedule we can’t list them all, please accept our apology.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you with these Pretty in Pink pillows from Thred, part of their Tropical Preppy collection.

Holli at Thred is more than talented, we adore her creative pillows.

With that, may everyone stay cool, stay safe and stay happy!

Selena Gomez/KMart & Nastia Liukin/Penney’s (+ a few Preppy Sales & Savings)

Hello-Hello, and welcome to an absolutely frenzied day!

We are so incredibly behind schedule today our post is almost all photos, we begin with an early look at the Selena Gomez for Kmart Dream Out Loud collection.

When we initially posted about the line it had not yet landed with a retailer; the deal with Kmart was finalized two weeks ago.

According to today’s story in WWD, Kmart is using the line to help revitalize its Juniors department.

“First Kohl’s and Avril Lavigne, then Wal-Mart and Miley Cyrus, and recently J.C. Penney with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Now, it’s Kmart’s turn to rejuvenate its juniors department with Selena Gomez.”

The most expensive item in the collection is priced at $24.

The collection is scheduled for a launch coinciding with back-to-school shopping.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Dallas Morning News has more on the new line for JC Penney:

“Designed for girls 8 to 12 years old, the collection will be promotionally priced from $11.99 to $21.99 and will be in stores just in time for the back-to-school season…”

Here are a few styles.

And a couple more styles from the upcoming line.

The pieces will be available in sizes 4 to-6x, 7 to 16 and plus.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We do have a few Sales & Savings should you be seeking fiscally friendly retail opportunities, beginning with Kate Spade, offering an additional 25% off sale merchandise.

Kate Spade

The Kate Spade offer ends April 4.

J. Crew is doing an additional 30% off sale merchandise, albeit with a twist we haven’t noticed before.

J.Crew

The interesting thing about this one is what’s in the fine print: “Offer not valid on phone orders.” Perhaps this has been the case forever, we just never noticed.  At any rate, to receive the discount use promo code EXTRA30 at checkout, this promotion ends April 1.

And thus ends our ever-so-short post!

J. Crew Bridal 2010, Sales & Savings of a Preppish Sort

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday!

Doesn’t it take forever to get to this particular Friday every year? This one following the New Year’s? Or is it just our old and ancient self?

Lest we lapse into a whineathon, we move on to a quick glance at this spring’s J. Crew Bridal look book:

J. Crew

Officially dubbed “Weddings and Parties Spring 2010 Preview,’ the line continues to offer stellar alternatives to more costly bridal attire.  First up, the Chiffon/Organza Dune gown.

Courtesy Photo via The Frisky

For some reason the Silk-Cotton Estate dress seen below appears heavy and bulky, even when taking into account a thicker, weightier fabric. It must be the lines or the lighting or the shot. Or something.

J Crew via The Frisky

This one makes up for that with its light and appealing lines.

Our thanks to Bridal Opulence and The Frisky! To peruse the entire collection, just click here.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have just a few Friday Fun bits and bytes today, almost all of them of the Sales & Savings kind; we are trying to keep your pocketbook in mind.

There are lots of Angela Moore goodies available at a splendid price point in Angela’s Attic, we had nary a clue about the Attic and its treasures!

The Buzzy Bees classic (L) is now $24.99 (a nice savings from the original $50), as is the Confetti Pink/Lime classic.

Next, a reminder the Brooks Brothers clearance continues apace; if seeking a look that combines tartan and madras for the man in your life, here is a possibility.   On the right we show the Black Fleece Knit Jacket for women, reduced in price by 50%. (FYI, it appears much of the Black Fleece is discounted.)

Talbots is also offering some bang-up bargains.

As one might expect, both Kate Spade and Tory Burch also have significant discounts available, both in-store and online.

The Vineyard Vines guys are doing their ‘Whale of a Sale,’ with offers like this Argyle V-Neck, reduced to $89.99.

The discounted merchandise offered in the Boys and Girls sale section is darling, per usual with this retailer. On the left, the Girls’ Corduroys and right, the Girls’ Striped Rugby Dress.

For today’s Pretty in Pink, we go with a man’s style we would personally be pleased to sport, the pink cashmere sweater from Matthew Williamson’s new menswear line.

Courtesy Photo via WWD

It is a luscious look. We also appreciate the cool yet vibrant pairing of olive and fuchsia seen on the scarf. While not for us, it seems like a very hot color combination this year. Below we show two looks from Louis Vuitton’s pre-fall group using an almost identical palette.

It is an eye-catching combo.

We leave you with a look at the new line Tarina Tarantino is launching at Sephora come February.

May everyone enjoy a recuperative and restorative weekend!
