Tory Burch & Marc Jacobs Coming to Your Targét…?

Hello-Hello, we thought it might be a good week for some Friday Fun.

We begin with news about an upcoming collaborative effort announced this week: Target and Neiman Marcus are teaming up for a joint collection. Women’s Wear Daily has more:

The Target + Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection will be sold beginning Dec. 1 at all 1,763 Target stores and the 42 Neiman Marcus stores, as well as online at target.com and neimanmarcus.com.

Among the designers included in the line: Oscar de la Renta, Tory Burch, Carolina Herrera, Diane von Furstenberg and Marc Jacobs.  Merchandise will be priced from 7.99 to $499.99, WWD says that most items will cost less than $60.  Below, the logo that you will be seeing when it comes time for promotion of the limited edition goods.

Each of the 24 designers has created 1 to 3 items for the collection, back to the WWD story for what is in the line:

“…gifts in men’s, women’s, children’s apparel and accessories, as well as other categories that some of the designers are getting into for the first time, such as sporting goods, home decor, pet accessories and accessories for electronics.”

Here is the other designers participating:  Alice + Olivia, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Brian Atwood, Eddie Borgo, Derek Lam, Judith Leiber, Lela Rose, Marchesa, Philip Crangi, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rag & Bone, Robert Rodriguez, Rodarte, Skaist-Taylor, Thom Browne, Tracy Reese, and Jason Wu.

As with so many of these partnerships, executives believe things will sell out quickly. (At the risk of sounding cynical, can you say ‘eBay’?)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is not the only news about a high-end retailer teaming up with a lower-priced chain: Nordstrom and Topshop have announced a partnership as well. This September the upscale company will start offering Topshop merchandise in 14 of its stores, some of the pieces will be exclusive to Nordstrom.

Business Week offers this:

To get women excited about shaking up their wardrobes again, Peter E. “Pete” Nordstrom, 50, the president of merchandising, has cut a deal to sell clothes from Topshop, a London-based retailer known for mid-priced trendy styles — punk-inspired pinafores and ladylike tweed — that defy easy characterization. It’s the sort of fashion people don’t expect to find at Nordstrom. And it could draw in new customers — or turn off existing ones.

And why we are seeing so much of this now? Back to Business Week:

At a time when wary U.S. consumers obsessively comparison-shop online and open their wallets only for must-have products, retailers are falling over themselves to lock up merchandise shoppers can’t find anyplace else.

Hmmm. Thoughts on either or both of these? Will it cheapen the brand for either Neimans or Nordstrom, or is it a savvy move for the discounters?  Too soon to tell?

Two final tidbits today, the first one of those “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” kind of items. Behold, the Sock Sandals.

Via Geek Alert

Thank heaven Geek Alert was all over this:

Meet the Silly Sock Sandals. No need to rub your eyes, seeing is believing. Now for the first time socks and sandals have joined forces and have melded into one. Imagine the smiles you’ll receive as you sport the silliest socks known to mankind. Furthermore, you’ll save valuable time getting ready for the day.

The time-saving benefits are something we somehow overlooked. Heh-heh-heh.

Our final morsel comes via the Times, it was too cute to overlook, a story about posh dog houses.

Drew Kelly for the New York Times

The article looks at a number of different styles, including this one that model Rachel Hunter commissioned.

La Petite Maison via The New York Times

Evidently it was intended to look like a miniature version of her Mediterranean-style home.

Then there is this one, intended to look like the Grant Humphreys Mansion in Denver.

Having lived a block from the house for years and years, I was surprised the replica didn’t resemble the real deal a little more.

Regardless, they are all fun to look at, there are even abodes for other pets. Oh my.

Stacy Sodolak for The New York Times

To enjoy the slide show in its entirety, click hereJennifer Kingson’s story is not only a great read, it offers some great resources for those interested in upgrading quarters for the four-legged family members.

We want to thank everyone for the lovely comments and email the past few days. They mean more than you might realize, we can’t tell how much we both appreciate them.

May everyone enjoy a wonderful weekend!

A Classic Returns to LL Bean: is it “Preppy 2.0”?

Hello-Hello and welcome to a wacky Monday here at the Prepatorium! We hope the sun is bright and shining on your corner of the globe.

We begin with a look at the return of a classic LL Bean sweater, better known  as “The Norwegian“.  Remember this?

The photo is from this year’s Fall/Winter catalog. Here is a better look at the sweater compliments of the sharp dressers at Valet Magazine:

If you noticed in the photo above, the image of the sweater immortalized in The Preppy Handbook is also shown. But back to Valet’s take on the topic:

Filson. Brooks Brothers. Sperry. There’s a slew of trad brands partnering with young, hip designers and offering subversive takes on classics. But for L.L. Bean, they’re simply digging into the company’s rich archive and reissuing iconic pieces—hold the irony.”

Bean has done a superb job marketing this, with the upcoming return receiving quite a bit of play recently in the blogosphere.  In reality, this has been reported since May, when news was released about the sweater returning to the LL Bean lineup. And Valet’s thoughts about the sweater sent to them for review?

“…happy to report that Norwegian Sweater version 2.0 is good. Like, really good.”

The Norwegian will be available in November, selling for $129.

(And we won’t say a word about anyone here at the Palace having once owned such an item only to have had a spouse  remove it under  cover of darkness determine it would do more good keeping someone less fortunate warm. Nope.  TP would never be so cruel and shortsighted.)

Next, a quick look at some upcoming items from the Hello Kitty 35th Anniversary Collection.  Below, the Anniversary Tartan products.

We love that bright pink plaid so much we’ll declare this group as officially rating a Pretty in Pink designation, accompanied of course, by all of our standard Logophobia advisories.

The actual anniversary is November 1, and according to the WWD story on the upcoming event there will be quite a few products released:

• Limited edition Asics sneakers.

• New products from Hello Kitty’s ongoing collaboration with the California-based streetwear label Tokidoki, known for its quirky Japanese-inspired anime illustrations.

• A series of Judith Leiber-designed items based on retro Hello Kitty designs.

Of course, in no way does Hello Kitty display a prep aesthetic, but the designs are so darn cute, and almost always have pink somewhere in the motif, sometimes we can’t help but be drawn to them.

Also featuring pink (but more frequently red) and also wildly popular: all things Twilight.

Including a new line of cosmetics:

According to our trusty Women’s Wear Daily, the beauty products will showcase two separate lines, the first aimed at younger fans:

“Volturi Twilight, named for a ruling vampire clan in the “Twilight” series, is aimed largely at teens and is launching the middle of next month at Hot Topic, Torrid and Ulta.”

Above, body shimmer from the Volturi group; prices for the Volturi items are to by $9 to $19.  And for the older crowd? The article explains that merchandise will be a little pricier, $18 to $34:

“Luna Twilight, a play on the moon themes in “Twilight,” is targeting older girls and teenagers’ mothers and is launching in the middle of next month at Nordstrom and Dillard’s.

True fans are no doubt already aware one can purchase Twilight Venom Lip Plumper & Shine at Sephora.

The final product announcement we share involves a brand we adore, Ferragamo. Unfortunately we are not feeling favorably about this one, it just doesn’t seem like a natural fit.

Your thoughts? Should the upscale shoe company stick to what it knows best, or do you believe this might be a good way for the firm to extend the brand?

And finally, don’t forget, tonight on David Letterman:

The September Issue

The September Issue

Yes, it is Le Wintour (Anna Wintour, Vogue Editor, aka ‘Nuclear Wintour’, etc.) promoting The September Issue tonight on CBS.  The documentary opens in New York this Friday; caustic columnist Maureen Dowd wrote about it this weekend in the Times:

“Just like Miranda Priestly, who dismissed her assistant with a cold “That’s all,” Anna frostily murmurs “That’s it? There’s nothing else?” as she surveys photos and clothes and prods a staffer: “It’s Vogue, O.K.? Please, let’s lift it.””

By all means. Perhaps we should cease the “Because life is better with a bow” credo and go for “Let’s lift it.”

Indeed.

McMommy’s Sex & the City Movie Premiere Fashion Statement

Greetings and a warm welcome to all this holiday weekend! Most importantly, fond and grateful remembrances for each and every individual who made it possible for us to be who and what we are today. Sigh. We are so very blessed.

Today’s post is brief, as what The Princess is actually doing is engaging in a grown-up version of Paper Dolls, only doing it online! How tedious for all of you!

The Back Story: Today’s post is mostly about McMommy. She is simply one of the very best Bloggers in the Galaxy. Period.

McMommy Chronicles

At any rate, for some reason (we’re thinking a few too many Manhattans), McMommy wrote an absolutely insane comment on TP’s blog related to the McPrincess’s fashion skills. The non-existent skills. As in none. N-O-N-E. You see, The McMommy is attending a gala for a movie premiere later this month with her Besties and thought perchance we might provide a bit of fashion insight. TP was mortified! The only insight we have is determining which pearls go with what twinset! Of course, the movie that is opening is Sex and the City, a film with a cast of gowns, party frocks and accessories to kill for, although (as we have frequently noted) some are more than a bit over the top. Quite. Now McMommy did mention in her query an affinity for the wardrobe leanings of Charlotte’s character, at least more so than any of the other three women in the primary roles; TP is grateful for small favors.

After much window shopping, The Princess came up with the following selections: One of the two short formal party frocks seen below, both from Le Boutique Tar-szhay, both from the Isaac Mizrahi for Target® line. The first is the Pink Lace Ruched Dress, and the second is the deep pink or fuchsia Taffeta Camelot Party Dress, seen just below the lace close-up.

Now that you have selected the dress, it’s on to the shoe issue. Or non-issue in this case, as we think you will absolutely fall in love with these as soon as you see them: the Marjean Slide Sandals from Joan and David, complete with grosgrain bow. These are on sale at Shoes.com and while not the extraordinary value the Mizrahi dresses are, where else will you find such a superb use of grosgrain ribbon on a sandal? Exactly.

To compensate for your little splurge on the sandals, you will appreciate the exquisite good taste and economic appeal of a vintage Judith Leiber bag on eBay. Originally purchased at I. Magnin (or at least we think so looking at the label on the interior of the bag), this clutch-style bag can be carried by its crystal studded chain, or used as a clutch and of course, you know which option The Princess recommends. This treasure is the real deal, it is in immaculate condition and even comes with its own little comb! Let’s chat for a moment about the bag’s ability to also provide you a timeless style statement: a Leiber is a classic, and so are you. End of story.

Of course one never knows these days whether the temperature inside the theatre will be bone-chilling cold or makeup-melting hot, so it’s imperative you bring a wrap. The Princess thought perhaps the oversized blue floral Versace scarf or lovely Emilio Pucci draped over your shoulders would work, both at Bluefly.com.

If these don’t whet your whistle, how is McMommy feeling about a Diane von Furstenburg oversized scarf in a lush linen and cotton blend that is oh-so-soft against the skin?

Or the Missoni woven shawl wrap in one of their always elegant knits? The von Furstenberg and Missoni are both on sale (but of course) and both are from Net-a-Porter, a truly wonderful web site if ever there was one, with such glorious service you’ll think you are at Nordstrom!Missoni Knit Shawl Wrap

We do hope this McMommy sorta’ kinda’ McCharlotte Party Frockage look we’ve created meets with approval. If not, do let the McPrincess know where we went wrong, so that we might amend our outlook for the next premiere of a SATC film. It is only a matter of time……yes?
