About Those Used Shoes Nordstrom Is Selling at The Rack

Hello-Hello, it’s a glorious sunny day here at The Prepatorium, we hope it is the same in your corner of the globe. Those hopes and prayers are meant especially for all our friends in those areas recovering from 72 hours of disastrous, deadly weather.

We begin today with a rather unusual story.

CNBC.com

There’s quite a bit of chatter online about a story on CNBC’s Consumer Nation blog, it involves Nordstrom selling used shoes at its Rack stores:

High-end department store Nordstrom is funneling its returned and worn shoes to its Nordstrom Rack outlet stores. This practice is surprising since outlet stores are not known as second-hand stores. It’s a place for retailers to send their unsold merchandise each season.

More than anything the issue is about perception and possible damage to the brand; the story quotes several industry experts.

“On a perception level, it turns you into a junk store, a second-hand clothing store. And, that is something that now calls into question Nordstrom’s reputation as a first-rate, quality high-end type of brand retailer,” said branding expert Robert Frankel.

Evidently the practice is not new, a review posted on Yelp back in January of 2011 offers this input from a Rack shopper:

HERE’S the CLINCHER about Nordstroms……I didn’t notice til I got home and read the receipt (didn’t bring my glasses that day) that the flat slip-ons I purchased for $49.90 and retailed(supposedly) for $139.00 were tagged WORN AND REFINISHED SHOES. That’s right, people……….. USED, RESOLD SHOES.

Here is part of the company’s response.

Nordstrom Rack Spokesperson Kendall Ault said the shoes that are labeled as “worn and refinished” are gently worn (either tried on or accepted as returns) and then professionally cleaned, repaired and refinished as needed to return to a “near-pristine” condition.

Doing a quick check of the online Rack shoes I didn’t see any described as ‘refurbished’ or ‘previously owned’.

This just doesn’t make sense for a brand with Nordstrom’s history, let alone the stature it wants to maintain in the marketplace. And I say this as someone who has purchased and worn vintage clothing (1930’s – 1970’s) and handbags at consignment shops and thrift stores. (Fortunately Scooter-the-Wonder-Cat is vigilant in guarding such purchases.)

Rightly or wrongly, used merchandise carries a perception that doesn’t sync with the image of a higher end, upscale store, even if it is “only” being done at its off-price stores.

“Disturbing Preppy References?”

Hello-Hello and welcome to a Wednesday!

We start with a few expressions of gratitude, the first to our Wonderful One, the Consort, for his fabulous post yesterday, and to everyone who provided more food for thought through their insightful comments, thank you.

Our second ‘thank you’ goes to the folks over at The Daily Basics, a delightful online magazine with a philosophy we love: “…one short, sweet and quirky article a day to think about. That’s it.”  We were ever-so-excited to be included in their recent story “How to be a Preppy“, a look at several brands serving the prep market. Among the companies covered in the piece are such stalwarts as Lilly Pulitzer, Smathers and Branson, Angela Moore, and Vineyard Vines, so you can imagine how astonished (and über-flattered) we were here at The Princess to be included! Eeek! Thank you!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We move on to more standard fare, starting with Fashion Week in Milan, wrapping up today.  Mens fashions are the primary focus here, although more looks were shown from women’s ‘pre-fall’ collections than in previous years.

We’ll chat primarily about the Prada show, and its ‘preppy factor’.  Below, a montage of men’s looks from the Prada show via All The Rage.

PHOTOS: Peter Stigter/LA Times

An AP story about the collection has been running since the weekend:

“”Without using the word “preppy,” the trendsetting designer nevertheless presented a collection that would make anyone feel right at home in Harvard Yard, with tweed blazers to crew neck pullovers and casual slacks.”

The folks at The Cut (NY Magazine‘s fabulous online fashion group) have concerns about the way the story’s author, Daniela Petrof, described the line:

“We’re disturbed……  since when is Harvard a fashion point of reference? First they launch a fancy clothing line and get tons of press for it, and now Prada’s critically praised men’s collection is credited with Harvard Yard influences.”

As mentioned, womenswear was also shown:

More from the AP story:

“”The “preppy” collection shown Sunday is so normal it might have risked boredom were it not for the Prada fashion genius.”

A few more images by Giovanni Giannoni for WWD’s story on the Prada pre-fall looks.

From that WWD story:

“…camouflage, a fashion perennial Prada claims to have never embraced before, was more urban jungle than safari jaunt, as evidenced by a frisky, big-buttoned coat in shocking pink and brown.”

And a few more men’s styles via WWD:

Back to the story at The Cut:

“Even if Harvard kids would never wear this stuff (or most things remotely more interesting than boat shoes with no socks), the problem is, the world doesn’t need them to think themselves any more important or WONDERFUL than they already think they are.”

Well. The crankenstein word comes to mind.

Quite.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In news about another collaborative pairing we share a look at the Lacoste partnership with streetwear label Married to the Mob.

Teen Vogue

Ummm….?

Next, a look from another athletic line:

Clive Brunskill/Getty

That would be a dress from Nike’s new Maria Sharapova Collection they are launching with the tennis star.  Ahem. A sheer overdress…? On the tennis court? Indeed.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close on a fun and cheery note, a look at the new Lilly Pulitzer Melamine Dish sets from our spring/summer line:

PreppyPrincess.com

Each gift-packaged set includes a plate, bowl and matching utensils in either of the new patterns, Desert Tort or Later Gator. The sets run $24.50, or one can consider the individual plates and bowls.

These are just cute as can be, we absolutely adore them; they are $9.50.

,

For those subscribing to our Lilly Pulitzer email list, watch for a Lilly update tomorrow in your electronic in-bins! This will have all the latest on delivery dates, new goodies and patterns, and pre-ordering information. (If you would like to be on the Lilly, Jonathan Adler or Preppy Planet email lists, just click here and scroll down, email sign-ups are on the lower right side. We only send updates about every 4-6 weeks, and we never (ever) share your information, so breath easy on those fronts.)

With that we say g’bye until next time, may everyone enjoy a simply blissful evening!

Sperry Named Brand of the Year, Nautical Gifts, Sales & Savings

Hello-Hello, and Happy Friday! We are struggling to accept the fact that Christmas is one. week. away. Oneweekfromtodayomgwhatevershallwedo????  There. Enough hysteria; we solider on.

We have a hodge-podge today, including some last-minute gift ideas. Before we do anything else, we want to acknowledge Sperry Top-Sider, named Brand of the Year by Footwear News.

We’ve made no secret of our love for Sperry, especially some of their recent offerings, like the women’s Print Bahama.

Sperry Top-sider Bahama

As the editor wrote in naming Sperry:

“And while Sperry Top-Sider has owned the nautical category for a long time, clever updating and interesting collaborations put the brand ahead of the fleet in a tough year.”

Not all of the firm’s offerings are for us. The Women’s Abacos look uber-snuggly, but are clearly much-too-hip for TP.

Sperry shares the award with Sam Edelman.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We begin our nautical gifts section with Jonathan Adler’s Whale Ornament, still available on the designer’s site. Crafted in unglazed porcelain this treasure comes complete with an elegant little box just ideal for gifting.

Jonathan Adler

We like the alternative use for the whale described on the Adler site:

“Decorating tip: break off the metal hanging loop and these little guys are fab figurines sure to dazzle any tablescape or bookshelf.”

The ornament is not the only whale swimming on the Adler sea. How cute is the Salt & Pepper set?

Jonathan Adler

Mr. Adler definitely has a flair for the nautical, his Anchor Rug is something we are rather fond of here at the Prepatorium.

Jonathan Adler

This makes us think of the one and only Nautical by Nature, who has done a marvelous series of posts on nautically inclined gift ideas; they really are must-reads. (You haven’t seen adorable until you see the sailboat mobile she featured.)

We have always loved this designer’s work, his whimsical approach to design matched with the clean, unfussy lines seen throughout much of his work are very appealing. That is why we are just tickled to announce we shall be carrying his new line of stationery and gifts!

We are very excited about this one; if you would like to be on our Jonathan Adler mailing list, just click here and scroll down to see the mailing lists on the lower righthand side of the page.

Back to the nautical gift scene, the Brendan Set of two onesies looks precious, for a little one, we adore the nautical striping and sailor collars.

We found the set at ChicNautic, where there is a nicely curated offering of nautically themed goods. The Anchor Sweater at Bella Bliss is darling, available in sizes 12 months to 12 years.

Bella Bliss

Also from Bella, the Baby Whale Cardigan in three different colorways.

Bella Bliss

If that doesn’t send the Cute-o-Meter into the red zone, we don’t know what will. A more reasonable alternative perhaps, the Avery & Addison Whale bodysuit at Targét.

Le Boutique Targét

St. James Boutique is always a good stop; the retailer carries a broad variety of merchandise, all of it top quality.  Their La Vellette knit jacket is timeless, and the Embrun Parka a workhorse.

They also have some darling stuffed animals for the Young Master and Miss of the House.  We love the Plush Lobster for kids, along with the stuffed Crab.

The company’s slickers are attractive but also built for heavy duty; the Anita in pink is our favorite, but the Marie is also outstanding.

St. James is known for their striped tees. The Ouessant is on the left, and on the right we show the Chalut.

If one doesn’t mind beading on their tee (ahem) the Polo Ralph Lauren Otho Long Sleeve top might work.

Polo Ralph Lauren at Bloomingdale's

The shirt also comes in navy blue and is currently reduced by 40% at Bloomies.

The Anchor Earrings by Helen Yarmak are seen in Elle’s Naughty Nautical feature, something we didn’t feel we needed to share in its entirety.

The good folks at Cape Cod Jewelers offer this elegant bracelet.

Cape Cod Jewelers

The man on your list might appreciate the Jack Spade Nautical Billfold.

Jack Spade

This also comes in a rich chocolate brown if the lighter color shown above isn’t appealing.

Finally, the Nautical Towels at Preston’s are a fun way to bring a touch of the sea indoors.

Preston's

May all of your shopping be smooth sailing.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now we move on, there are Sales & Savings opportunities to share. Brooks Brothers is promoting up to 60% off original prices in their Clearance Sale; this includes some Black Fleece for Women and Men’s Black Fleece as well.  We like the Madras Bow Tie.

The colors on the right make it ideal for a U of M Wolverine fan.

J. Crew is doing an online only Extra 25% off sale, that additional discount is applicable only to sale merchandise.  Use promo code EXTRA25 at checkout to receive the savings.

J. Crew

Hypothetically this ends Sunday night (the 20th) at midnight.

The Tory Burch Sale offers a healthy selection of products. We like the Pier jacket (L) and the Oriel cardigan (R).

The Neiman Marcus online only Last Call clearance offers an additional 30% off sale prices.

And Barney’s is in sync, taking an additional 33% reduction in price for their fall sale items. This covers some items in the Home Department, including several of the Fred Red pillows; from left we show Kaleidostripe, Modern Maze, and the Double X in chocolate.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For today’s Pretty in Pink (and Green) we share the Monogrammed Onesie and Burp Cloth Set at Bella Due.

Bella Due

Sweet as can be in pink and green stitching complementing the bright pink and green ribbon. (Although we wonder if that bow on the onesie might irritate a little one?)

With this we send everyone wishes for a wonderful weekend, may it be merry and bright!

Sexy Preppy? Plus the Lilly Pulitzer & LeSportsac Line!

Hello-Hello and Happy Wednesday!

We begin with a look at a style term we generally consider an oxymoron: sexy preppy.  Think back to those growing-up years, was appearing “sexy” something Mummy or Daddy aspired to? An achievement looked upon favorably, on a par with shooting in the low 70’s at this year’s club outing? A priority upon the fashion landscape at your palace?  We think not.  And it certainly was not a topic of conversation, heaven forbid.

Now, before we get our whiskers in a wad, be advised the Princess is not suggesting that those adhering to a preppish style aesthetic are not “sexy”.  Rather, we make a distinction in how one arrives at attaining such a look.  For preps this comes as a byproduct of pursuing classic lines in well-made garments; the result is an understated elegance. This far transcends any of-the-moment styles frequently revealing much-too-much and leaving nothing to the imagination.  The style is accented by a carefree touch of the whimsical, and it never takes itself too seriously.

Having now bored everyone to tears said all this, we were intrigued by a story in the Calgary Herald last week, “The Prepster with a subhead “Local Designer Embraces Preppiness And Makes It His Own With Edgy Designs”.

Cheryl Gorski/Lucire Magazine via Fashion Ledge
Cheryl Gorski/Lucire Magazine via Fashion Ledge

The story focuses on the KaaDiki menswear line, seen above and in the photo below.

Courtesy
Courtesy Photo via Canada.com

The story describes the line this way:

“Featuring plenty of red, white and blue–he loves bright colours– his button-down shirts have preppy crests, zip-up sweaters are form-fitting and blazers are elegant yet funky.”

While the apparel exhibits preppish traits, we must be annoying and point out the phrase “preppy crests” belongs on our ever-lengthening list of fashion oxymorons. Honestly. The family crest is rarely (if ever) seen these days, far more a re-invention of designers like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, and most assuredly not seen on a woven shirt.

Courtesy Photo via Canada.com
Courtesy Photo via Canada.com

Designer Haithem Elkadiki describes his style in the story:

“I’m obsessed with the preppy thing, always. But preppy can be boring, so it’s taking the whole idea and mixing it with sex appeal.”

As mentioned, there is much to like in the line, and the young designer is more than appealing, passionate about his work. But we don’t think there is any peril The Consort will be seen sporting KaaDiki at Princess InterGalactic HQ.

Were you raised in a tradition favoring a  “sexy” look (ahem), or did the family favor things more like those found at LL Bean and Brooks Brothers?

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Our next little newsflash is almost a week old and most readers are probably already aware of the news, but you know what we used to say all those years we worked in TV: “If it’s news, it’s news to us!” (Heh-heh-heh.)

At any rate, we were tickled to learn via WWD that one of our favorite designers has announced a new collaborative effort: Lilly Pulitzer is partnering with LeSportsac on a line of bags for Spring 2010, whoo-hoo!

There are three different Lilly prints being used for the Sportsac pieces, including ‘Hip Hop Hooray,’ seen below.

Via Nitrolicious.com
Via Nitrolicious.com

According to the WWD story:

“The three prints — cobranded specifically for the collaboration — center on endangered species such as Florida panthers (other “animals of the Everglades” are also featured).”

Below, what we believe to be the ‘Purrrfect Patch‘ design:

Via Nitrolicious.com

The joint effort is nothing new for the company; previous collaborations have showcased designers like Stella McCartney, Diane von Furstenberg, and Jonathan Adler, among others. Next, more loveliness in the ‘She’s a Piston’ print.

Via Nitrolicious.com
Via Nitrolicious.com

This one is so luscious we are making it today’s Pretty in Pink. Our thanks to the always-on-top-of-things Nitrolicious for the photos, as well as information on the upcoming Lilly Loves Green campaign and the three LeSportsac prints:

“… a yearlong initiative generating support and awareness for all the green things Lilly loves (the ocean, the animals, and the planet) – the three co-branded prints center around endangered species, specifically Florida panthers, butterflies, and animals of the Everglades, generating environmental awareness in colorful fashionable style.”

We have had more than one LeSportsac on hand almost since the company’s inception thirty-five years ago and can’t wait to see these in person. There will clearly be more than one “must have” in the collection, they all look like loads of fun.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

We share a tidbit we think the lovely Muffy Martini will consider good news, word that Montblanc is expanding their footprint in Beverly Hills. Friday’s WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) shares the interior of the firm’s larger star on Rodeo Drive.

mont-blanc2

One of our favorite topics of conversation often arises when discussions of one’s favorite writing instruments. Below, the Paso Doble pen from Montblanc.

We didn’t realize Montblanc was making eyewear – are we hopelessly behind the times with this realization?

Above, the Montblanc Amalfi sunglasses.

On this note we say G’bye until tomorrow, may your afternoon be fabulous!

All About the Lilly: WWD Runs Lilly Pulitzer Special Edition

TP is in heaven. Truly.

The editorial brains minds over at Women’s Wear Daily have dedicated an entire special issue of the paper to Lilly Pulitzer’s 50th.  (You may remember in today’s post on the Inaugural gowns that we mentioned WWD was doing some fabulous special issues… this is another one of those special editions.)

WWD "Lilly Pulitzer at Fifty"

WWD

For those less familiar with the Lilly Pulitzer brand, it was started in 1958 by Lilly Pulitzer….

Lilly Pulitzer at home in Palm Beach

… rapidly becoming very successful into the early 1980’s. And then – horrors!  The line ceased operating in 1984 and all hope was lost for true Lilly lovers. Life began anew in 1994 when Scott Beaumont and James Bradbeer Jr. (seen below) decided to buy the company and bring the storied line back to life.

And it gets better moving forward: the company plans to grow the brand through the addition of a stationery and gift line. How fabulous is this news?!

Courtesy Lifeguard Press

The collection will be licensed by Lifeguard Press, the folks who handle the Vera Bradley paper line.  According to the WWD story the new paper group will include a variety of items:

“…. party goods and gifts, from wrapping paper and bags to partyware, cocktail napkins and drink umbrellas, office accessories like desk sets, diaries, notebooks, frames and calendars…”

The paper line is on track to launch in January. If you would like to be on the mailing list for updates on the line and other announcements, just click here to be taken to the Lifeguard Press site.

There is a quick mention of the sleepwear line, licensed by Carole Hochman:

As well as an intriguing look at the design process.  Have you ever wondered just how the company continues to come up with such smashing colors and designs? Here is an inspiration board from Lilly headquarters in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

TP is absolutely transfixed by the pink and green chairs even though they are almost impossible to see in the photo.  Perhaps they are easier to see in this shot of the atrium at the Lilly Mother Ship:

Talaya Centeno for WWD

One of the dynamite stories in the special issue features quotes from some of fashion’s brightest talents on the brand and its founder.  Here is a sampling accompanied by fun photos of Lilly back in the 1970’s.  We start with Ralph Lauren‘s comments:

“Lilly Pulitzer created a very distinct look — her personal style of bright colors and prints has an important place in fashion.”

Courtesy Lilly Pulitzer

Courtesy Lilly Pulitzer

And this from Kate Spade….

“Lilly Pulitzer was one of the first to take a personal look and lifestyle and turn it into a brand. Her cheery and colorful prints are much imitated, but she is a true original.”

As well as Isaac Mizrahi

“Lilly Pulitzer is one of the few designers worthy of copying. You can’t be an American designer without a little nod to Lilly.”

Reed Krakoff (the Grand Poohbah at Coach) has memories similar to those you probably have:

“One of my earliest memories of fashion is my mom wearing a lime green printed shift dress at our country club in Weston, Connecticut. Lilly Pulitzer was a summer uniform and always defined summer style.”

Howell Conant/Timepix

Lilly's Original Shop (PHOTO: Howell Conant/Timepix)

Our favorite quote is probably this one from Jonathan Adler:

“Lilly Pulitzer makes everyone look happier, richer and more fun-loving than they probably are. Lilly equals sunshine.”

TP has never been to the Mother Ship in Pennsylvania:

Nor have we visited the Lilly store at King of Prussia mall, practically in the backyard of Lilly HQ:

Remember the 50th Anniversary Lilly Pulitzer Jeep we showed previously? Well, here at the Prepatorium we  periodically queried the Princess Consort, asking if he thought anyone was ordering up the Special Edition vehicle. (Of course, he loves queries of this nature in all their profundity and thought-provoking significance.)

Courtesy

It turns out people *have* been buying the Limited Edition Jeep:

“About 70 of the Jeeps were preordered and, at $25,000 a pop, some of the Signature store owners will not only be driving one, but they are also able to sell them to their customers.”

Still to come? A Florida’s Natural orange juice carton done in one of the signature Pulitzer prints. An altogether remarkable story, quintessentially American with its ups and downs, and its happy ending for the company’s founder. Although she no longer owns the company, Lilly is still on hand as a consultant; her design influence and imprint can be seen everywhere.

The WWD special edition was written primarily by Julie Naughton with contributions from Dianne M Pogoda, and they did a bang-up job IOHO.

The New Tiffany Tote Bag + Preppy Needlepoint

Hello and aren’t we happy-happy-happy it is a bright and beautiful Tuesday?! Tis a privilege to be on the third coast where it is bright and sunny, low humidity and high excitement at the Merchandise Mart! We owe a ‘Thank You’ for the lovely weather to Erin (Third Coast Preppy) who promised the Princess Consort it would be this way!

After designing our exclusive placemats, napkins and other goodies, there is nothing quite so fun as buying trips to find the latest and greatest in preppy goodies for the Preppy Princess. That’s where we are, on the road looking for the ‘newest and coolest’ in personal and home accessories.

Speaking of new… has anyone seen these yet? We just stumbled upon them while looking up another item at Tiffany’s. (Yes, to be accurate it is singular, Tiffany, but we’re feeling slightly sloppy this morning.) These are new, at least to The Princess, canvas with leather trim, and only available online.

The Tiffany Tote (our name – Tiffany is simply calling them ‘Pink Tote,’ ‘Brown Tote,’ etc.) seems more like a handbag to TP; regardless of name, we must admit they actually seem kind of cool. The website describes them this way:

Carry yourself with style. Tote in canvas with pink leather. 15.5 x 7.25 x 15.5″. Available exclusively on Tiffany.com.

The totes don’t look like they are really 16″ square from the photos; they seem wider than they are tall, but they do look good-sized. At $395 they are not inexpensive but their lines are clean and timeless. (There is also a white patent leather version of the tote we do not show in the photos.) We’re pretty sure this is one that will be in style next year and the year after that and the year after that. In other words, a good investment if you love the look. Of course, we would remove these pesky things lest the LogoPhobia kick in:

Discounting the easily removable leather logo tag (at least it looks easily removable) this is one handbag or purse or tote or whatever we might be able to establish a relationship with, one we could learn to like, even grow to love. TP would even consider overlooking her bitter and hostile feelings minor concerns (minor?!) about the Tiffany Eyeglasses and think about acquiring one of these. For new readers this means overlooking Tiffany logos the size of Lake Michigan on said eyeglasses. (We have discussed the tedious topic in previous posts and don’t want to bore anyone else with the background.)

Does anyone else think this is reminiscent of other retailers who have branched out into new markets? Cartier does handbags in addition to other personal accessories, and Bulgari comes to mind as a jeweler that extended its brand into new markets, especially leather goods. As an example, we see the Baby Panther Mobile Phone Strap from Cartier below.

On the other hand Fendi started as a small Italian fur and leather company that expanded into more apparel. These are a few looks from their Resort 2009 RTW (Ready to Wear) Collection, so they aren’t commercially available.

Now because it held such a big role as Carrie Bradshaw’s bag in Sex and the City, we simply must show the Fendi Baguette in shocking pink on sale at Bluefly.

You didn’t really think we would pass up the opportunity to do the pink and green thing did you? Here is the green one, also on sale at Bluefly Batcave.

Now, having shown with great fanfare the Polo Ralph Lauren Kids Paint Your Own Polos we were amazed to learn about this: the Fendi Paint Your Own Baguette!

This one was released months ago, back in February or March. It was greeted with almost universal disdain and resentment, people were simply aghast at the thought of $1300 for a white canvas bag with 10 magic markers as they saw it. It is still available at numerous sites if you are so inclined, like eluxury.com and Needless Markup Neiman Marcus.

Everywhere we see stories about the renaissance of needlepoint, although it really never went away for some of us… did it for you? Anything promoting the art/craft is good and you won’t hear us denigrate the coverage. Besides, it is always fun to learn about new designs, including these from Jonathan Adler. The pillow in the top photograph is designed to look like very preppy grosgrain ribbon belts, and the smaller photo below shows Adler’s Ties Pillow, both really TDF (to die for) and great additions to almost any room at any of your homes.

Then we have these two, each of which is on sale, originally $165 and now $98, quite the bargain. We show the set, but the Queen of Hearts and Ace of Spades pillows *are* sold individually so the set of two would run $196.
