Talbots New Face, & Is It Joint Custody for a Gossip Guy?

Hello-Hello, welcome to another delightful day at the Prepatorium, where the sun is shining brightly and the grounds are drying out after this weekend’s torrential downpours.

There is so much happening we offer numerous Bits & Bytes we hope you find to be moderately interesting, beginning with news that Talbots has upped the ante when it comes to their marketing plans, hiring 90’s supermodel Linda Evangelista.

Amy Sussman/Getty

Above we show Ms. Evangelista in December of last year. Here’s more from the Page Six story:

“Talbots chief marketing officer Lori Wagner said of Evangelista “She possesses this timeless yet spontaneous glamour that’s irresistible in our minds.”

In a StyleList story Ms. Wagner refers to the model as “perfection,” adding:

“”For our 40-to-45-year-old customer, when you say Linda Evangelista, there’s a reaction.”

Look for promotional and marketing materials featuring Ms. Evangelista sometime in August, as well as in the oversized September issues of fashion magazines.  (With apologies to our Facebook Fans who may have already seen our mention of this.)

In Gossip Girl news, something many readers are likely to have already seen, the Chace Crawford mug shot.

Mr. Crawford was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge in his hometown of Plano, Texas.  The incident took place in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Rafa Nadal won his fifth French Open yesterday, retaining his “King of Clay” honor.

Mr. Nadal is seen above being congratulated by ball boys and girls after his big win at Roland Garros.

Last night’s MTV Movie Awards offered many interesting style choices, as always. Perhaps one of the funniest moments involved Tom Cruise performing with Jennifer Lopez.

Mario Anzuoni/Reuters

That really is Tom Cruise; he was reprising his own Len Grossman character from “Tropic Thunder“.

Matt Sayles/AP

Twilight was a big winner; above we see Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner on stage at the Awards. (Nay-nay, TP was not caught watching MTV, we merely trawled this morning’s newsfeeds seeking tidbits for our cherished readers.)

In other style news, Details magazine offers a look at “Three Quintessentially American Fashion Archetypes“. Can you guess the first style under discussion?

Of course, it is ‘prep’.

Another magazine looking at the prep aesthetic, Lucky, in its June issue.

Happy reading.

One other literary tidbit of note, not at all newsy to many fashion followers, and something heavily covered by most of the prep or trad men’s blogs, but not a topic we have chatted about here at the Princess:

Powerhouse Books via Amazon

Take Ivy” is a cult classic, on a par with The Original Preppy Handbook for many trads.

Courtesy Powerhouse Books

The 1965 book hails from Japan, and is essentially a collection of candid photographs shot on Ivy League campuses.  As described on Amazon’s site:

“Madras plaid, Top-Siders, seersucker shorts, highwater trousers, tweed jackets, Brooks Brothers, J. Press, J. Crew. What comes to mind?”

The news part of our conversation is the upcoming English-language version of the book, due out this fall, a much-lauded event for those fond of classic/traditional styles.  J. Crew fans may be pleased to know there will also be a limited edition version of Take Ivy, slated for sale at the company’s Liquor Store location.  The upcoming release may be pre-ordered from the publisher, Powerhouse Books.

For more on Trad style vs. WASP style (aka ‘preppy’), Esquire’s March issue offered some distinguishing characteristics. Or pop over to Ivy Style for an easier read.

We have two more quick Sales & Savings mentions:

J. Crew is promoting an additional 20% off sale merchandise online only; use promo code EXTRA20 to receive the savings. The offer is scheduled to end June 9.

Lord & Taylor’s Friends and Family sale is underway, offering an extra 25% off ‘almost everything,’ with a 10% discount on cosmetics.

Use FRIENDS as the discount code; if shopping person at L&T head over to the site and print out one of those ubiquitous coupons.

We leave you with a question Tilly asked us to pass along. It seems she’s feeling a trifle insecure, for upon hearing us chat about this weeks Monday Tilly Pic, she asked “Does this picture make me look fat?”

Silly Tilly Hard at Work

So we replied, “Well dear, define that. As in, does a beached baby seal look fat?” She wept Tilly tears and we agreed to go with this angle instead.

Tilly's Better Side

(For those not fond of Twitter, the Monday Tilly Pics are merely a little feature where she tries to show her best side every week and we post the image on Twitpic.)

Target’s Next Designers, Tiffany’s Mint Julep & Preppy Sales

Hello-Hello and Happy April 15th!  Quite.

There is simply too much going on here at Princess Intergalactic HQ for a proper post, so we shall share a few bits and bytes we hope hold some appeal for our treasured readers.

First, news of Target’s next design partnerships; Gaby Basora will be doing a group for the retailer’s GO International collection.  Ms. Basora is best known for her Tucker collection, a brand previously mentioned in this space.  Below we show the Pink Wavy Princess Dress (L) and Tulip Bottom Skirt with shirred waist (R), both from the Tucker line.

Ms. Basora’s collection will be available beginning September 10.

WWD also has word on the next jewelry partnership at Targét, it is with Temple St. Clair.  Below, two examples of Ms. St. Clair’s current work (not the Target collection).

This collection launches at most Target stores and online August 29.  We are excited to see both groups.

Speaking of jewels, we must congratulate our friend Miss Wendy, her earrings will soon be seen in the upcoming Sex and the City 2 movie!

Here is a better look:

Congratulations to Miss Wendy! The film premieres May 27.

In other fashion collaboration news, WWD reports that J. Crew is doing a denim line for men:

“The retailer has collaborated with Japanese selvedge denim label Warehouse on an exclusive men’s style that will sell for $300 on its Web site, and at its Men’s Shop and Liquor Store locations….”

Crew is also continuing its recently introduced partnership with Levi’s.

So much for that hypothetical end to conspicuous consumption, behold the “world’s most expensive Mint Julep”:

Courtesy Photo via Luxist

Tiffany has partnered with Woodford (the bourbon folks) to create a mere 73 cups like the one seen above. Jared Paul Stern at Luxist has more:

“Only 73 of the sterling silver cups will be available at $1,000 apiece; purchasers will be served a julep in the cup at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, May 1st. Proceeds from the cups will benefit The Barnstable Brown Kentucky Diabetes & Obesity Center.”

If interested in your own Julep, just click here for more information.

We have a number of Sales and Savings we thought we should share:

The Pink and Green Petal knobs are available at the always-fabulous Layla Grace.

In our post yesterday we nattered on about wedding gowns and Bridal Fashion Week. We close today with images from another fashion show held this week:

Afton Almaraz/AP

Above we see Schultzy, a West Highland terrier, modeling his bridal best during the “Last Bark for Bryant Park” fashion show.  This was the second year for the show, put on by FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) students, consisting only of garments fashioned for the four-legged family member.

We’re thinking we may need to share more from this show in tomorrow’s post….oui?

Until then, may everyone’s day be pink, green and beautiful!

Selena Gomez/KMart & Nastia Liukin/Penney’s (+ a few Preppy Sales & Savings)

Hello-Hello, and welcome to an absolutely frenzied day!

We are so incredibly behind schedule today our post is almost all photos, we begin with an early look at the Selena Gomez for Kmart Dream Out Loud collection.

When we initially posted about the line it had not yet landed with a retailer; the deal with Kmart was finalized two weeks ago.

According to today’s story in WWD, Kmart is using the line to help revitalize its Juniors department.

“First Kohl’s and Avril Lavigne, then Wal-Mart and Miley Cyrus, and recently J.C. Penney with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Now, it’s Kmart’s turn to rejuvenate its juniors department with Selena Gomez.”

The most expensive item in the collection is priced at $24.

The collection is scheduled for a launch coinciding with back-to-school shopping.

Another young lady with an eponymous clothing line, gymnast Nastia Liukin.

The Dallas Morning News has more on the new line for JC Penney:

“Designed for girls 8 to 12 years old, the collection will be promotionally priced from $11.99 to $21.99 and will be in stores just in time for the back-to-school season…”

Here are a few styles.

And a couple more styles from the upcoming line.

The pieces will be available in sizes 4 to-6x, 7 to 16 and plus.

We do have a few Sales & Savings should you be seeking fiscally friendly retail opportunities, beginning with Kate Spade, offering an additional 25% off sale merchandise.

Kate Spade

The Kate Spade offer ends April 4.

J. Crew is doing an additional 30% off sale merchandise, albeit with a twist we haven’t noticed before.

The interesting thing about this one is what’s in the fine print: “Offer not valid on phone orders.” Perhaps this has been the case forever, we just never noticed.  At any rate, to receive the discount use promo code EXTRA30 at checkout, this promotion ends April 1.

And thus ends our ever-so-short post!

An Anti-Prep’s Antics, Chanel Does It Again

Hello-Hello, happy Tuesday!

We have a slew of bits and bytes combined with a heavy out-of-the-office schedule, so today shall be somewhat scattered and mercifully brief.

We begin with an update on a member of that oh-so-exclusive (but sadly growing) group known as the Anti-preps. We are referring to an individual sometimes called La Lohan; the celebrity is seen below just before today’s Chanel showing at Paris Fashion week.

Thibault Camus/AP Photo

The reason for mentioning Ms. Lohan today?  News she has filed a $100 million lawsuit over this television commercial.

Courtesy E-Trade via Page Six

For those unfamiliar with the E-Trade television campaign, the spots feature “voices” of babies who invest in the stock market. In this particular commercial the little tyke is apologizing for not calling his little female friend the previous night when she inquires in an accusatory fashion: “And that milk-a-holic Lindsey wasn’t over?” (As far as we know it could also be spelled Lindsey.)

Unless Ms. Lohan’s legal counsel has evidence the Grey creative team (E-Trade’s advertising agency) sat around discussing the benefits of aligning E-Trade with Ms. Lohan (an unlikely scenario) we fail to grasp the grounds for the litigation.  This story from Page Six explains that evidently Ms. Lohan believes she is on a level with entertainers recognized by a single name, like Oprah or Madonna.

Courtesy E-Trade via You Tube

Additionally Ms. Lohan’s counsel is requesting an injunction forcing the popular commercial off the air; more from the Post’s story with quotes from her attorney:

“”They used the name Lindsay,” Ovadia said. “They’re using her name as a parody of her life. Why didn’t they use the name Susan?”

Precisely our question.

This takes us back to our television days, when a certain NFL Team Owner decided that his Football Team owned the color orange. (This is also in the You Can’t Make This Stuff Up category.) Seriously. No one but the Official Team Station was to use that color in conjunction with the team. At all. That particular legal action was short-lived and unsuccessful for the Team Owner.

One last quote from the story:

“This is a subliminal message. Everybody’s talking about it and saying it’s Lindsay Lohan.”

Now we’re feeling like we’re not part of ‘everybody’.  Sigh.

As we mentioned the Chanel show at Fashion week, we want to share a few images. Below we see Alexa Chung and Caroline Seiber on their way into the event.

As always, there was incredible staging; in this case 25 tons of ice was brought in to create the desired backdrop.

Eric Ryan/Getty

It’s a tad difficult to look at fall/winter clothing when it is finally springlike outside.

We did like some styles.

Mr. Lagerfeld never fails to raise the bar, an amazing accomplishment considering his tenure at Chanel.

In our Sales & Savings category, J. Crew is doing an additional 30% off sale merchandise, use promo code EXTRA30 at checkout.  The promotion ends at midnight Friday, but we would not be surprised to see email on Friday announcing the discount has been extended through the weekend.

Speaking of J. Crew, the firm’s Bomber Jacket has been updated.

J. Crew via Luxist

This is the jacket done in collaboration with UK retailer Belstaff, the same one worn by Hilary Swank in Amelia.

For today’s Pretty in Pink we offer two items, the first is only available for a limited time at ‘by invitation’ sale site One King’s Lane.  Accessories from a line we love, Baekgaard, are on sale through the 12th.

Passion Fruit by Baekegaard

The group of four pieces seen above is now just $59.  If in need of an invitation to the site click here or email us at thepreppyplanet@gmail.com

Our piece of pink perfection is actually edible.  Meet the Candyglam ring.

If It's Hip It's Here

It definitely looks good enough to eat, and that’s the idea, these are made of hard candy. For more on the tasty jewelry visit If It’s Hip it’s Here.

On that yummy note we say goodbye until next time, may everyone enjoy the bright sun we are seeing here at the Prepatorium!

A Logo the Princess Loves, Savings of a Preptastic Sort

Hello-Hello and Happy Wednesday, it is bright, sunny and beautiful here at the Prepatorium! May it be so in your corner of the globe.

We begin with something whimsical today, the Tory Burch Barbie.

Courtesy Photo via WWD

More accurately, the Tory Burch accessorized Barbie. Some readers may recall the Barbies featured at New York Fashion Week last year in honor of the doll’s 50th Anniversary.  A Women’s Wear Daily story explains this newer version:

“Mattel recently introduced a Barbie Basics doll, who wears a simple little black dress and can be easily accessorized and personalized by their owners with special accessories kits featuring such items as scarves, purses, shoes or jewelry.”

The CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) has twelve special Barbies getting glammed up to be auctioned on eBay starting tomorrow. Other designers include Kate Spade and Alexis Bittar, whose doll is seen below.

Courtesy Photo via WWD

The starting bid for each Barbie is only $100, a wonderful entry point for such a fun item. (Keep in mind, this perspective comes from the individual still carrying scars from her childhood Barbie vs. The Beauty Parlor Doll trauma. Indeed.)

We now share something that may stun readers.  So shocking in fact, we suggest those with any frailties or infirmities may want to be seated while reading this next tidbit.

Are we ready?

All right, here it is: We are loving the logo on this Polo Ralph Lauren shirt.

This is not a typo, nor are we are taking hallucinogens.  The polo shirt in question is seen below.

Polo Ralph Lauren

Why are we not foaming and frothing with maniacal articulating a minor concern that our Logophobia may be triggered by said logo? Because of what is on the back of the shirts.

This is the knit top Polo created to help raise funds for the United Way’s Disaster Recovery Fund. The Haitian flag is seen on the front of the shirt in addition to that annoying the pony logo.  Above you see the back of the shirt with the United Way logo, click here to see all versions of the shirt.

The good folks at Polo Ralph Lauren are setting a high standard, donating 100% of proceeds from shirt sales to the United Way Humanitarian efforts in Haiti. And while it isn’t a look we would sport (preferring to keep activities of this nature private), our hat is off to the retailer.

Loads of designers, organizations and retailers are doing varying things for varying charities and we have no intention of talking about too many of them. However, we are happy to share efforts from a few of the more ‘preppish’ companies, like the PRL example discussed above, or this campaign by Lilly Pulitzer.

Lilly is promoting their donation of 10% of sales proceeds from six different items to the Red Cross.

As always, we feel compelled to recommend that those considering donations to any non-profit take a look at the organization’s operations via Charity Navigator or Charity Watch.

Next, a quick peek at a brand we occasionally mention, APC. The spring/summer lookbook is now available.

Courtesy APC via HighSnobette.com

We initially saw the images via High Snobbette about ten days ago and liked several styles.  The images may also be seen on the APC blog.

Courtesy APC

The navy skirt in the shot just below looks wonderful.

Courtesy APC

We do like a number of pieces in this collection, the clean lines and lack of frou-frou are qualities we appreciate!

We leave you with a few quick Sales and Savings reminders.

  • The J. Crew Extra 30% off Sale promotion ends at midnight tonight. To receive the additional discount, use promo code EXTRA30 at checkout.

Almost everyone has taken significant markdowns on merchandise, including the major department stores.

We leave you with news from Spanx, a brand we know many readers like.

From a quick perusal of the styles shown on the website it seems the swimsuits range from attractive to frightening, but this may be reflective of our lack of experience with the brand.

Do let us know what you think, we love your insight!

Secret Sales at Luxury Retailers & Are Those Gossip Girls Underdressed?

Hello-Hello and welcome to a Wednesday!

We start today with a look at a new phenomenon in online shopping, courtesy of several upscale retailers: the limited-time sale. It generally starts with an email like this:

Courtesy Neiman Marcus

The image above is from a Neimans email we received Monday; it is for the ‘midday dash’ at Neiman Marcus, a two-hour online-only sale.  At the appointed time this is what a savvy shopper will see at the Needless Markup Neiman Marcus site; the merchandise changes with each sale.

As described in a July story in the Times:

“Customers learn about the sale mere hours before it begins. This week’s “dash” featured a $697 Burberry handbag, marked down from $1,395. A Carmen Marc Valvo chiffon gown was $575, down from $1,150. And Cole Haan flats were $82, down from $165.”

By no means is Neimans the only luxury retailer trying new ways to prompt consumers to open (re-open?) those pocketbooks.  The following screen grab shows what one sees today after the most recent Saks ‘Fashion Fix’ sale ended.

Courtesy Saks Fifth Avenue

The Fashion Fix email explained “Today, the rush begins. Get Yours. Online Only.” and promoted 50% savings on top brands at Saks like Herve Leger, Alice and Olivia, Chloè, and more.

However, not all ‘secret sales’ are online only, as the Times story details:

“… the benefits of secret sales — whispered discounts and discreet price negotiations between customers and sales staff in the aisles of upscale chains. A time-worn strategy typically reserved for a store’s best customers, it has become more democratized as the recession drags on and retailers struggle to turn browsers into buyers.”

Nor do the higher-end stores want to tell everyone in the world about their discounted goods.

“The conventional wisdom is that the more consumers who know about a sale, the better for business. But that rule does not necessarily hold in luxury retailing.”

The Journal has also written about the relatively new practice; from their October story on Saks testing this method of selling:

“The realm of online “private sales” so far has been dominated by a small number of retail startups that specialize in the brief sales of discount designer apparel. Their Web sites, including Gilt.com, RueLaLa.com and HauteLook.com, have built a following with virally marketed, daily “members only” sales.”

Below, a recent Rue La La screen shows listings for that day’s ’boutiques’.

Courtesy Rue La La

AOL’s Daily Finance has more on how the designers’ perceive these sales:

“The sites are popular with designers, who’d rather have their goods sold there than hung in clearance racks at department stores. Designers know their brands are their currency and they are very wary about cheapening them; it’s a constant point of friction between designers and department stores. That’s why you’ll never find Hermès sold off-price.”

Back to Stephanie Rosenbloom’s story in the Times, with more on the psychology behind selling this way:

“Such discreet sales preserve a brand’s veneer of exclusivity and help create a sense of urgency by limiting the time customers have to score a deal. Additionally, secret sales enable stores to discount their merchandise deeply without angering regular customers who may have bought at full price.”

In many respects this doesn’t seem all that different from what many retailers have been doing online for some time, providing early notice to its better customers of special discounts, sale and promotional events. One issue that may be a concern is overexposure; below, another email received here at the Prepatorium from Neimans, this one touting the Last Call sale currently underway.

Courtesy Neiman Marcus

Some customers may start to feel inundated with ‘special sale’ notifications and promotions.  It’s no secret that we find J. Crew a repeat offender in this category, with the volume of email creating a perception that everything is always ‘on sale’, and if not currently ‘on sale’, it will be ‘on sale’ again very soon.

On the other hand, here at the Princess we have been told we should email customers on our mailing lists more frequently. We only send our newsletters to those requesting them, generally every four to five weeks.  We take your email address and privacy very seriously, and while desirous of offering special savings and sharing new merchandise with you, we want those occasions to remain ‘special’. (If not a subscriber and interested in receiving either our Preppy Planet or Lilly Pulitzer newsletters, just click here for our  home page, and look at the lower right-hand side of the page to sign up.)

BTW, if anyone needs invites to the ‘members only’ sites like those listed above, just email us (thepreppyplanet@gmail dot com) and we’ll get one on its way to you.

Also on the hit parade today, a follow-up to yesterday’s post showing a rather scantily clad Blake Lively attending the premiere of her new film. It is not unusual for Ms. Lively to be out and about in such apparel (or lack thereof), while Gossip Girl co-star Leighton Meester is generally deemed to be more conservatively clad.  Ummm… perhaps not so much any more.

PHOTO: Splash News

Ms. Meester is seen at last night’s American Eagle store opening party, where she performed several songs from her new album.

PHOTO: Steve Eichner/WWD

Whiles these images may look fairly provocative, the actress’s photos in the December issue of GQ are far racier. The one we show below is the only image not carrying the dreaded NSFW caution.

We really were amazed at the other pictures.

Speaking of G2, there is word today that Michelle Trachtenberg is doing a jewelry line with Coach.  From the story in today’s WWD:

“Trachtenberg will apply her tough-girl meets sugary-sweet vibe to her first jewelry collection in collaboration with Coach under the accessories giant’s youthful and spirited Poppy line.”

The new line will launch next Spring.

We close with a special Pretty in Pink, French department store Printemps is all aglow for the holidays.

We loved shopping at this retailer when they entered the US market many years back (ultimately an unsuccessful endeavor), but we have not visited any located on the far side of the pond for years.

On that, may everyone enjoy an evening that is light, bright and filled with fun!

Adventures in Argyle, Preppy Sales and Savings

Hello-Hello, greetings for another week!

We have several Sales and Savings to report today; some may be repetitious but we thought they bore a second run, beginning with Brooks Brothers.

Brooks has taken significant markdowns on many items, including several pieces that definitely qualify as Adventures in Argyle.

The Merino Argyle Cardigan is now $117.60 ($168), and on the right we have the Cashmere Argyle cardigan, now $208.60 (originally $298).  Both seemed to be available in almost all sizes as of this writing.

The Country Club Mini-Argyle crew sock is now $16 (originally $40) and the Cotton Argyle Anklet now $6 ($15); both are offered in a variety of colorways.

As The Consort has been heard to say: “You can’t go wrong with a good pair of socks from Brooks Brothers.”

Not on sale at Brooks, but definitely worthy of a mention, the St. Jude Collection, including the Brooksie ™ Bear.

Courtesy Brooks Brothers

The retailer is donating $5 from the sale of each bear to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There are several other items in this collection at Brooks Brothers, all with a portion of sales going to the hospital and research center.

Also offering a sizable selection of Sale merchandise, Lacoste; the hat originally ($45, now $24.99) and gloves (originally $40, now $27.99) shown below definitely qualify as Pretty in Pink.

Over at Bergdorf, their semi-annual sale is underway.

J. Crew continues their ‘holiday sale‘:

One item of note: Crew is also offering 20% off all orders of $150 or more; use promo code INSIDER at checkout. This is online only and ends Wednesday night (the 18th) at midnight.

Nautica has a solid selection of discounted merchandise in their online Sale section.  We simply adore the Girls Anchor Print Skirt is now $14.99, originally it sold at $30. We also like the Girls Signal Flag polo.

Two things we fell in love with: the Baby Anchor Print Hoodie (now $14.99) and the Baby Dreamer Sweater Coat (now $21.99)

The item that really sent us over the moon? The Infant Plaid Trim Onesie.

If that doesn’t qualify as Prepalicious we don’t know what will; it is off the charts on the Cute-o-meter. (It is also only $9.99.)

We have an update to the Jimmy Choo for H & M post from Friday: it was bedlam at most H&M stores when the collection went on sale Saturday.  In Vancouver shoppers camped outside the store.

Vancouver Sun

From a MarketWatch story:

“…the greater part of both Choo’s ladies’ and men’s collections sold out…. Even in Madrid, the epicenter of one of Europe’s most recession-battered economies, plenty of women and men could be seen toting glossy blue H&M bags Saturday afternoon.”

Below, Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg was among those shopping the H&M on Fifth this weekend.

Rob Loud/Getty Images

Speaking of Gossip Girl, many of Ms. Trachtenberg’s costars were seen at last night’s private screening of ‘The Private Lives of Pippa Lee‘.

Jemal Countess/Getty Images

Blake Lively was at the screening, along with Keanu Reeves, Julianne Moore, Robin Wright Penn, director Rebecca Miller and Zoe Kazan.

Jemal Countess/Getty Images

Many of the actress’s G2 costars were also in attendance, including Chace Crawford.

Jemal Countess/Getty Images

And real-life sweetheart Penn Badgley was on hand as well.

Jemal Countess/Getty Images

The film has a November 27 release date.
