J. Crew’s New Store, You Can Help Scarlett O’Hara

Hello-hello!

Today we are hopelessly disorganized all over the map, lots of things to share, although in abbreviated form. We begin with a look at J. Crew’s newest men’s-only store.

Robert Mitra/Women's Wear Daily

The new store officially opens today, and Women’s Wear Daily (subscription req’d.) was invited in for a sneak peek.

Robert Mitra/WWD

As with the other men’s shops, the Liquor Store (located in a former bar) and the Soho store, this location pays homage to the site’s original purpose; a bank in this instance, including a lower-level vault now used to show accessories.

Speaking of J. Crew, there are a number of recent stories and blog posts circulating about Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor LOFT merchandise looking similar to J. Crew pieces.  The always-on-top-of-things Lauren at Fashionista first posted about it last Friday, noting Ann Taylor’s efforts to update its merchandise mix:

“…many industry insiders we’ve spoken to about AT’s reformation have noted: “They’re trying be J.Crew.” Evidence of this marketing scheme can be found in the retailer’s newfound preppy-meets-glam aesthetic.”

The Frisky also delves into the topic in this post yesterday.

“We, along with other fashion insiders and shoppers, have noticed that Ann Taylor and Loft have been looking a lot like J.Crew. All three retailers seem to be targeting the same group—women who want a tasty and stylish stew of Parisian, preppy, and urban chic.”

Can you pick which is which between the asymmetrical leather jackets?

How about with the sleeveless black shirtdress? (Sleeveless day dresses for fall and winter? Really?)

Are you able to determine which retailer did each necklace?

We aren’t completely clear on how recent the phenomenon really is, as this Minnesota Monthly blog post notes:

“But have you seen the new Ann Taylor Loft fall catalog? Good gracious. I got one in the mail last week and all I could think was this is total rip-off of J.Crew. Right down to the ruffled shirts, statement jewelry, and model poses.”

The author notes that she is a Crew loyalist. The date for this post? September of last year.

Next, a topic near and dear to TP’s shrunken little heart, Gone With the Wind.

Remember this dress worn by Scarlett O’Hara when she goes to visit Rhett in jail?

Famously whipped together from Miss Ellen’s green velvet curtains that were still hanging at Tara after the war, the dress is now in desperate need of repair.

As is this frock, referred to here at the Prepatorium as “The Hussy Dress”.

Via Harry Ransom Center

(This is the one Rhett threw at Scarlett when she didn’t want to go to Melanie’s party!) The gown worn by Vivienne Leigh for her wedding scene to Charles is another gown needing restoration.

Via KXAN-TV

These, and two more gowns are housed at the Harry Ransom Center at UT-Austin, where a campaign is underway to raise funds for restoring and repairing the gowns.  These all came to the Center when the University received the David O. Selznick archives, a massive collection of materials. Click here for more donation information.

We leave you with two reading recommendations, should either topic prove appealing. The first is from the fabulous Reggie Darling, a marvelous look at two different fashion (style declarations, really) looks from the sixties.  We believe readers will recognize both names defining those styles, one being Lilly Pulitzer

and the other, Marimekko.

Via Fashion is Spinach

The uppermost image is of Mr. Darling’s very own nineties-era Lilly swimsuit, complete with the Lilly signature within the pattern.

We have our own issues with the two design aesthetics, as we can frequently be found in Lilly, while also creating Tilly’s bed (well, one of her three beds) from an iconic Marimekko print.

We think you will enjoy Mr. Darling’s post, it is a delightful read.

Our other suggestion for an online visit involves the inimitable Preppy 101, as she is hosting a splendid giveaway showcasing this incredible Cat Studio “America” towel, as well as these Nico and LaLa luggage tags.

Along with a few other goodies, like the Lilly Dress Magnets

.. and iPhone Covers.

Click to pop in for a visit at Preppy 101, even if the contest holds no interest, reading the posts is always a bright spot in the day.

With that we say adieu until next time!

Prohibition Preppy, Quirky Preppy, An Olympic Adventure in Argyle

Hello-Hello and welcome to a Tuesday!

Loads of news tidbits today, beginning with word that J. Crew is opening another standalone Mens store in the city, on Madison, right across from the Womens store.

Also J. Crew related, the Alexa Chung for Madewell collection was shown yesterday at Fashion Week.

Elizabeth Holmes/The Wall Street Journal

In her review of the collection Elizabeth Holmes at the Journal writes:

“… the fledgling brand’s buzz factor rose considerably Monday evening with the début of Madewell’s partnership with Alexa Chung , the model turned television personality who is a fixture on the social scene’s best dressed list.”

As the photos indicate, this was more of a presentation than the standard runway shows we frequently show.  The pieces were very appealing, especially for those a little younger than TP.

Refinery29.com

More from Ms. Holmes’ review:

“The clothes were inspired by the 1960s, Ms. Chung said, which was evident in the short shorts and tea dresses. The colors were fairly soft, in tans and blues and grays, with the occasional pop of bright red or black velvet.”

InStyle UK

The line holds lots of promise. There is no word on Ms. Chung designing any future collections beyond this initial group.

We were fascinated by a headline for a post on The Thread, a WNBC fashion blog: “Preppy Prohibition with lots of bling“.

Robert Mitra/WWD

The headline was for the review of next fall’s Lorick collection. More specifically, the review reads this way:

“The collection evoked a highly styled, Miss Havisham-in-prep-school glamour and a fun-loving elegance that seemed pulled out from a fantasy dress-up trunk.  These are the sugar plum fairies about which J. Crew dreamed.”

This is so far over our head we aren’t attempting any explanation about the fairies or the preppy prohibition.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In a post last week we mentioned our interest in a new line, Callula Lillibelle. The line officially debuted this weekend.

In our post we originally showed the sketch on the left; now we believe the dress on the right syncs up with the sketch. (Yes? No?)

We very much like several styles shown by the new label.

Sweetheart necklines and three-quarter sleeves on a swing coat will snag our attention (and affection) almost every time.

We think these two also match up.

This is what WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) wrote about the fashions:

“Calling it a “desk to dinner” label, designer William Calvert and his partner, Melanie Fraser Hart, presented a début contemporary collection of just that — well-cut coats, stretch suiting and ladylike day and evening dresses, all of which will retail under $400.”

Earlier in the week WWD asked designers what inspired their vision for this fall’s collections; here is the response from Callula Lillibelle’s founders:

“It’s that buttoned-up decadence that speaks to us all. It’s a wardrobe for January Jones, our modern-day Tippi Hedren.” —

Courtesy AMC-TV via WWD

No wonder we found the collection so appealing!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We discovered another new label, Wendi Reed.

From WWD’s review:

“Known for knits, designer Wendi Reed made a strong first step into wovens with a quirky preppy collection of tweaked schoolgirl dresses and separates like a navy riding jacket decorated with a stack of men’s bow ties.”

There are delightful touches in many of the designs, we are eager to see how this label fares going forward.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For today’s Olympic Moment, we have a stellar Adventure in Argyle:

Robert F. Bukaty/AP

That is the Norwegian curling team at practice in Vancouver.  According to this report the team had nary a clue they would be sporting such distinctive styles:

“Team Second Christoffer Svae ordered the argyle golf pants for his team over the Internet before they headed to Vancouver. The team had no idea they’d be wearing anything other than the standard black trousers until they opened the uniform box.. and beheld the gray, red, white, and blue pants that look somewhat… harlequin-like.

Here is the team in another, but similar, style.

Robert F. Bukaty/AP

The pants are definitely creating buzz, being referred to as “shagadelic” and “rockin” in many stories and blog posts.  The headline for this Canadian Press story isn’t as lighthearted:

“Norwegian curling pants worthy of a fashion violation more than an Olympic medal”

Now that seems a bit harsh, there’s no need to get one’s whiskers in a wad.

Some readers may have already guessed what brand the curlers are wearing: Loudmouth Golf, sponsor of the always-colorful John Daly. We show the pants as seen on Loudmouth’s site, on the left the Dixie-Y model, and on the right the Red & Gray-Y.

Perhaps the writer should be grateful the teams isn’t wearing the Cherry Bombs (L) or the Pole Position pair from Loudmouth.

Loudmouth Golf Cherry Bomb pants

Mr. Svae shows his good nature in the CP story:

“Curling officials confirm there is nothing to prevent the Norwegians from wearing the eye-popping pants during Olympic competition as long as they are team colours.

“There’s actually no rules against (the) pants but it probably will be after this,” admitted Svae.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And one quick reminder…

… tonight the new champion will be crowned at Westminster!

That Preppy Style Thing Again, J Crew Tribeca Store, L.A. Salvatore Ferragamo

Hello and Happy Friday! A few months back we did several posts marveling that so many different people and publications were alerting us to the fact “preppy style is back.” It seems the change in seasons or some other occurrence has hatched another slew of ‘preppy is cool” type articles, posts, stories, etc. Obviously this was not news back in June for most in our little online group, nor is it news now but it does provide for informative or entertaining (or a combination of the two) reading.

We’ll start with the one factor we know to be influencing fashion and style writers: Gossip Girl (or “G2” as we refer to it). The Chic Spy’s Character Dossier feature has a great story on the phenomenon this week. Below left is Serena (Blake Lively) in her Constance Billard school uniform along with Blair (Leighton Meester) in the not-really-meant-to-be-patriotic ensemble…or is it?

There is loads of info in the story, including a lengthy list of tips for getting your own similar look, not to mention the classic shot of ‘Chuck’ in a white suit with all the trimmings, a look that really must be seen to be appreciated. Then for fans who simply can’t get enough, US Magazine has put together an amusing series of “Before & After” photographs showing many G2 stars ‘back when…” before they gained such notoriety, and then ‘after,’ showing them now, present tense. Presumably everyone has seen the stills from the upcoming ‘catfight’ scene?

And did everyone hear that when Michael Kors isn’t busy running his clothing empire, or judging upcoming designers on Project Runway, he is doing a guest spot on the show? ‘Tis true.

Actually, when it comes to this fall’s small-screen viewing, we’re tickled to see that “Lipstick Jungle” is making a return. We thought the show was dead and buried, a victim of a poor time slot and too many chick-flick shows in prime-time. We happily discovered we were wrong when a promo for the popped up during the Olympics.

If you missed the first season, you can catch always play catch up at your leisure; put it in your queue at Netflix, or add another dollar to the College Fund by reserving it at your local library. TP’s library has no fees for videos but we can’t say what the policies are at your local lending establishment. The NBC site says the DVD is in ‘Anamorphic Widescreen,’ which besides sounding like a pornography film, is a term no one here at the Intergalactic Headquarters of The Preppy Princess has ever heard.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There is quite a bit of news for the guys when it comes to shopping this week, so much it’s tough to know where to start. We’ll begin with the new Men’s Salvatore Ferragamo shop at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, actually open since the last week of June or so, a beauty from the looks of things. Sleek and elegant wood, soft as butter leather couches and über-elegant Italian clothing, shoes and accessories make for a luxe look and posh surroundings. Perhaps Miss Muffy has popped in for a visit with the oh-too-wonderful Skipp, and can file a west coast report for us on the store. (BTW, this is *not* to be confused with the Mens & Women’s store on Rodeo.)

Should you be thinking ahead (always a wise move for the busy Princess) with an eye toward early holiday gift buying, there is the alligator duffel bag (center row), or the rather unfortunate shade of green alligator tote, on the top row.

Next we visit the new J. Crew Men’s store in Tribeca that opened yesterday in the old Liquor Store location. They have done a simply splendid job blending the old with the new, right down to the exterior of the building.

For those spared the tedium of The Princess going ga-ga over J. Crew’s announced plans to open a men’s-only store and word that the old Liquor Store bar was going to be its home, well, we’ll only say this is a somewhat legendary locale, and electing to pay homage to its previous incarnation as opposed to gutting it was a stoke of genius.

The retailer included most of its basics at the new store, as well as some of its higher-end merchandise, like its Thomas Mason fabric shirts (left), and wool Cambridge ties that are TDF. Really, they are.

They also have their new Italian Slim Suit in a color they call dark graphite that is just smashing, a classic look with understated elegance. Very nice. Any and all J. Crew fans will enjoy a wonderful little video with Senior Design Director, Frank Muytjens explaining ‘How J Crew Does Luxe for Less‘ using this suit (we think) as the example.

The store was actually designed by Andy Spade, who has his own book coming out in September. A story in Men’s Style explains more:

“The new store’s sponsoring a series of workshops based on Spade and business partner Anthony Sperduti’s forthcoming book, What a Man Should Know (available there on September 1). So what should you know? Chess, wine, and figure-drawing, among other things. It’s never too late to learn.”

There are lots of other goodies at the Tribeca shop you won’t find at other J Crew stores, like vintage Timex watches and Baracuta Coats, the latter’s Harrington G9 jacket favored by a wildly diverse group including Arnold Palmer, Steve McQueen, Elvis, Frank Sinatra and The Clash.

And to bring a smile to our preppy friends who are lovers of all things nautical, we bring you this stunning example of horological magnificence via Artfact. The 1940’s Nautical Captain’s Desk Clock is to be auctioned on the 30th, just a week from now. This is obviously what Miss Nautical by Nature needs on her desk. It would make an excellent addition to the cottage, but it’s also ideal as an outstanding gift to anyone whose heart is always with the sea.

On that seaworthy note we’ll say bye for now with wishes everyone is about to embark on their own journey to a wonderful weekend. We’ll be back of course, bringing some convention fashion tidbits and US Open tales.
