No More Dirty English & Mad for Plaid

Greetings from a sodden, sopping, and soaking wet Prepatorium.  Well, not here inside the Palace exactly, but just generally in The Great Midwest. It’s terrible timing really, as Misadventures of a Newlywed is in the region and we wanted her to enjoy her trip.

We start with news from Juicy Couture they will shut down Dirty English, their Men’s clothing line. The final shipment for the collection will be this fall.

As reported in WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.), the line never really took off:

“The unabashedly girly Juicy brand was a bad fit for a men’s business, and Dirty English lacked recognition, the company admitted.”

In another SOTT (Sign of the Times) many readers will have already heard about, news that Conde Nast is shutting down their business magazine, Portfolio.

We enjoyed this one from its inception, but never subscribed as we simply have too many magazines already. But then Conde Nast closed Men’s Vogue and we had to select a ‘replacement’ subscription from the publisher, so we opted for Portfolio. Now we’re wondering what to pick next…?!

Also in WWD, their look at fall accessories.  The story notes the influence plaid is having on the category.

Above, Polo Ralph Lauren mixes the popular animal print with plaid and below, Longchamps use plaid for one of their classic looks.

Of course TP also includes madras in the plaid category, like these J. Crew shorts:

We have a few more Sales and Savings to mention:

  • Both Ann Taylor and lower-priced sister store, Ann Taylor Loft, are doing their Friends and Family promotion. Use promo code FRIENDS at checkout to receive a 30% discount on purchases.
  • Today is the last day to receive 30% off all regular-priced handbags at Shopbop. Use the code ARMCANDY at checkout.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Although we go to great lengths to remain apolitical here at the Prepatorium, we make no secret of our efforts to buy American when acquiring goodies for the Preppy Princess.  Today we were pleased to receive a note about President Obama showing off the Made in the USA label inside his Hart Schaffner Marx suit.

We can only hope that HartMarx (parent company to Hart, Schaffner Marx and Hickey Freeman) is able to resolve the financial difficulties currently facing the company.  The Consort will be crushed if either or both of these labels were to disappear from his retail landscape.

And it would seem the Commander in Chief might also be wardobe-challenged without the upscale clothier. Above Mr. Obama is in Hart Schaffner Marx suit pants, and yes, that is Vice President Biden engaging in a little Friday Fun on April 24th alongside the President.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with a couple of Pretty in Pink items to brighten your day, beginning with this treasure at Pink & Brown Love, a companion site to the Pink and Green Scene mentioned in this post.

Pop over to see Erin at Decor by Color or at Pink & Brown Love to learn how to add that poster to your walls if so inclined. Also, Kate Spade’s Union Square Satchel at Bloomingdale’s.

May your day be bright and beautiful!

President’s Suitmaker Files Chapter 11 and a Change at 21

Hello and Happy Weekend to all, we hope it is/has been enjoyable and rejuvenating.  Here at the Palace we are simply grateful to see a yellowish orb in the sky; we believe it to be the sun, making an appearance for a few hours.

Talk about signs that the apocalypse is upon us. Gahhhh. We offer only brief Prep headlines on several stories today, as the topics themselves are far too depressing to delve into at any length. We can only speculate that Great Aunt Molly is doing far more than the proverbial “rolling over in her…” if the following news has filtered up to her:

  • The Greenbrier has laid off almost 50% of the staff and plans for casino gambling are reportedly under consideration
  • Lost City shares part of a snooze release from ’21’ that includes the following statement: “…we have (somewhat) relaxed our dress code in the lounge and bar areas, as well as the dining rooms. Ties are still preferred and greatly appreciated, but they are no longer a must.” TP is speechless. Lost City’s post on this topic is an outstanding read.

And then there is this…

“Clothier Hartmarx files for bankruptcy”

…as reported in the Trib yesterday.  The Chapter 11 filing covers the Hart Schaffner Marx, Hickey Freeman, and Hickey lines.  And while we would quibble with the paper’s description of the company’s suits as “luxury” (especially when contrasting their prices with those of other upscale retailers, such as Brooks Brothers), the news is grim indeed.

Hickey by Hickey Freeman

Hickey by Hickey Freeman

(Remember this post when we discovered what the logo for the oh-so-hip Hickey line actually is??)

It was a navy Hart Schaffner Marx suit President Obama wore when accepting the Democratic nomination in Denver; he also wore their tuxedo Tuesday evening to the Inaugural balls.  Former Vice-president Cheney also favors the brand, purchasing five Hickey Freeman suits off the rack at the Tyson’s Nordstrom back in August, as detailed in this post.

Enough about this, we’ll move on to something cheerier, like a bit of pink… and green.  For those unconcerned about dates of issue, the Lilly Pulitzer Spot-On cuff bracelets are an outstanding buy, at 60% off their retail price.

They are $38 at C. Orrico’s new online Sale Shack.  Another pink treasure, something we think the always fabulous Nautical by Nature could find appealing:

The Lilly Anchor Charm Bracelet at C. Orrico’s Sale Shack is selling for a mere $39, as opposed to its original $98. Who can resist?

The witty folks at Men’s Style are at it again with a wonderful slide show, Change We Can (Sometimes) Believe In.” The piece is a “Then” and “Now” look at popular culture now and back in 2000, when we had our last change in Presidential personages.  Back then it was “conspicuous consumption” and now it is “conscientious consumption,” that sort of fun.

As we are total Mad Men fanatics here at the Prepatorium, we had to share their take on actor Jon Hamm, starting with this 2000 image of the star playing Burt Ridley(?) in NBC’s Providence:

And as they put it:

Ummmmm…. in the interest of journalistic integrity, TP feels compelled to add a much more recent image of Mr. Hamm from the cover of today’s USA Weekend newspaper insert:

Thank heaven for those journalistic standards. (Heh-heh-heh.)

Until next time, stay warm!

The Olympic It Bag, Shoshanna, Ralph Lauren Rugby Update, Sale Updates: J. Crew, Saks, Barneys, Boden

Hello-hello and happy Wednesday!

Because we have dabbled in the Olympic Fashion world for a few days, we thought it best to step away from the Olympic uniforms and look at some of the additional items being marketed as tie-ins to the Beijing Summer Games. We finally came across some photographs of a bag we’ve been reading about for some time; the PUMA Olympic “It bag.”

Might we also add that hunting up the PUMA bags for this column was an eye-opening experience, albeit a tad mind-warping. As we don’t generally spend time blazing new fashion trails, we had *no* idea that the selection of bags PUMA offers is so broad! Heavens to Betsy! Below, the PUMA Olympic Ring Bag.

Below are bags that also won recognition in this year’s CSM (Central St. Martin) Design competition sponsored by PUMA, including the Medallion Bag designed by George Omerod in either Gold or Silver, as well as the CSM Elastic Ring Bag. The Princess applauds PUMA for supporting young, independent designers, but is somehow not in sync with the medallion bags. At all.

If you would like to read and see more on Olympic fashions and design, Forbes Life has an interesting story and along with one of their wonderful slide shows.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many readers are familiar with The Princess’s disdain for inappropriate emotional displays, yet they have been witness to her inability to contain herself upon seeing the madras plaid swim separates by Shoshanna. It was dreadful, we were absolutely gaga and completely out of control, incapable of containing ourselves. (Below, the ever-so-preppy madras swim top at Nordstrom.)

In reality, there is little from this designer that we don’t like, as her lines are simple, the cut is classic and the end result is always one that is sure to flatter every figure. In many ways it is a ‘preppy’ design aesthetic.

To the right of the swimsuit above, the Mosaic Belted Dress at Saks in a bright and brilliant shade of blue. (A quick FYI if you are still looking for swimwear, all of the Shoshanna swimwear separates are on sale at ShopBop, and there is an additional 20% off the sale prices.)

If you like Shoshanna’s designs you’ll want to pop over to Ronda Carman’s fabulous blog, “All the Best” for her profile of designer Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss (below).

Learn which handbag she carries the most, her favorite luxury in life and who her style icons are, plus you can become acquainted with the blog, a daily read for us here at the Prepatorium.

We also adore the Shoshanna Tuxedo Halter Dress at Nordstrom, with its cutaway top and pleated waist, and simply love the Stretch Jersey Cap Sleeve dress at Bluefly, despite the fuzzy-wuzzy photo.

Scoot over to Ronda’s when you have a minute to get a peek at the person behind the Shoshanna designs and meet Ronda, well worth the trip itself!

Natick Rugby Store

Natick Rugby Store

An update on last week’s post mentioning the upgrades being done to the Ralph Lauren Rugby website, including the added enhancement of being able to shop online at the site. The site is now open for business and you can actually shop the Rugby styles online!

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Once again TP feels compelled to tiptoe around the issue of m****, a topic you know that we never discuss, certainly not in a public forum such as this. However, there are times when economics mandate that one does what they can to pinch a penny or two along the way to livin’ the Prepalicious! lifel And TP is here to help, forever seeking measures and means to keep your pocketbook healthy and happy. (You know what a horrid chore it can be when you are forced to call up one of the Trustees and detail your plight.)

It is in this vein we always suggest the ‘Buy Ahead’ method for supplementing one’s wardrobe, acquiring pieces now that will be simply divine in the future. You know the basic boys button-down at Hickey-Freeman that is on sale now is ideal for this fall and winter, and no one knows what season it is because it’s a classic item made with superb materials and craftsmanship. Or the vibrant (that is an understatement) plaid sportcoat Thurston will wear to this fall’s holiday ‘do,’ similar to this Holiday Plaid Style on sale at Hickey Freeman.

Hickey Freeman Men's Holiday Plaid Sportcoat (on sale)

Hickey Freeman Men's Holiday Plaid Sportcoat

And don’t forget the edgier Hickey store, with goods aimed toward a younger and hipper clientele than those at parent store Hickey Freeman. They too have some fabulous men’s merchandise at outstanding price points, especially since they added ‘Take an Additional 20% off” to the deal. We are particularly fond of this Linen/Cotton Blend Chambray Shirt, a basic that will last forever. We are, of course, completely and totally ignoring those shameful buttons (gasp!) and the little leaf logo.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Naturally there are loads of treasures at the J. Crew Final Sale that are simply perfect for everyone, but do be sure to check the markdowns on everything.

For example, the Cambridge cable crewneck sweater, a ‘must have’ basic available in loads of colors normally runs $74. It is now $69.50, not much of a markdown.

We are pretty excited about the Men’s Broken-in Madras Sneakers, now only $19.99, still available in a good range of sizes in both the Tidal Blue or the Montauk Patchwork.

Even getting the little ones properly clad for school can be accomplished in some cases at this sale! Probably not in the school days category, but still fabulous: these Callie Flats for the little princess in the family.

There is always the GIrls’ Polished Cotton Polo at $6.99, with lots of colors to choose from, or maybe the Girls’ Cashmere Argyle Cardigan, doesn’t that look elegant, yet über-snuggly for the Little Miss?

For the young master, how can you go wrong with a silk Lighthouse Tie that was $29.50, now $7.99, or the East Hampton polo shirt?

BTW, we’re just tickled that *finally* the New J. Crew store opened at the Galleria in Dallas. Only one store in a town that size was just silly.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

One wouldn’t want to pass up the Summer Sale at their local Saks, or the online store with all manner of things marked down, including this Stephen Dweck Bronze Ring. There are other treasures like the classic St. John Sport Boatneck Stripe Sweater in a timeless wool and rayon knit you will wear for years (not shown). The Princess is also partial to the Ann Demeulemeester Suede Sneakers in black.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

At Boden things are not discounted anywhere near the amounts shown above, but the there are savings to be had just the same, if you enjoy the company’s casual classics.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Now don’t forget to stop by Barney’s Sale online, unless you’re in the city in which case it would be criminal to not get yourself to the physical warehouse sale. Already underway in LA, the online sale features deep markdowns and runs through the 26th, while the warehouse sale has even better markdowns, and you get the experience of someone ripping that top you were just looking at right out of your hands! The physical warehouse sale goes through the 1st of September.

And on that crazy note, the Princess will toddle off for a nightcap and some Olympics viewing!

The Mascara Wars: Chanel Fires a Shot, Take an Extra 20% Off Sales (Lots!)

Now you can call it a coincidence that the following arrived in our electronic Inbox this evening from our good friends at Chanel,

just hours after a similar email from a Chanel competitor arrived, but we think not. Following the link takes you to a lush-looking site, where you can watch all manner of short films about the company’s new line, Exceptionnel. Not to be confused with their earlier fall makeup release, “Strike Gold” which is as it sounds, all gold-based in colour, this new group is very dark and smoky, and not all of it is available in the USA.

It seems a good part of the Exceptionnel marketing weight is being thrown behind the “Exceptionnel Intense Volume and Curl Mascara.”

But the most entertaining thing about the Chanel mascara chatter is what beat the Chanel email to our Inbox by a few hours; we’re talking about The Turbolash email from Estee Lauder!

So it would appear we have the opening salvos fired in the Mascara Wars! Oh no! Of course, TP would like to think we broke the Turbolash story on the Princess blog (oh dear, she is back to talking about breaking stories, not a good sign) and naturally we’ll keep you posted on all details related to this important and exciting topic! (Heh-heh-heh.)

Moving on to something that may actually serve a purpose in your life, a reminder that tomorrow is the last day for the J. CrewTake an Extra 20% Off” Sale. Until they decide to extend said Sale. Or do it again. Neiman Marcus also wants you to take an additional 20% off their Sale prices, but unlike J. Crew, they do not show an ‘end date’ for the markdowns. If you are interested, there are an awful lot of handbags available for your viewing pleasure, including this Kate Spade from the Stevie group.

Not to be outdone, Hickey Freeman invites you to take an additional 20% off the Sale price on their merchandise, like this über-elegant Charcoal Striped Suit.

The same wonderful ‘Take another 20% Off the Sale Price‘ discount applies to both Men and Women’s Club House merchandise at the Bobby Jones site through July 31st.

And at the oh-so-hip Hickey (that’s not a typo folks, it’s just plain Hickey) site as well, look for an extra 20% off Sale prices through July 31st.

We made the mistake of doing a bit of surfing at the Hickey site; this rapidly led to trouble. Look at this wool & cashmere men’s sweatshirt and you will immediately see why. You just know the snuggle factor is going to be off the chart, and if you have that, what else matters?! The Princess is in love.

Garnet Hill is also having it’s Sale and Clearance, where goodies like this Cotton Henley sweater abound!

Our next-to-last Sale mention this evening is the J Peterman Summer Web-Only Sale.

If The Princess Consort were here he would personally vouch for the quality and workmanship of the J Peterman Vintage T Shirt, of which he owns several. He has also been quite pleased with Peterman’s Father of All T Shirts.

And everyone probably already knows about this one, but just in case you don’t,

the good people at Vineyard Vines are doing their part to help stimulate the economy, and lord knows, we appreciate their contribution! It is tough to keep that MonsterCard in the wallet when there are offerings like this Girls’ Overboard Flip Flop.

Or the Girls’ Boot Striped Polo

How about these cute Boys’T-Top Boats Chappy Swim Trunks?

There are also plenty of items on hand for Mom and Dad if you are still thinking about broadening your summer wardrobe selections, or ‘buying ahead’ for Christmas gifts or next year’s summer wardrobe.

Almost wrapping up our Sale selection tonight is eLuxury, where there is again an additional percent off the already discounted Sale price. But look closely and you’ll note the extra percent off is 25%, a better deal than any of the sites previously showcased!

Do remember that Lilly Pulitzer is on sale everywhere, and if you aren’t able to shop Lilly in person, there are loads of online locales you can try. A Splash of Pink, The Peppermint Palm, The Village Palm, or In the Pink are generally viable alternatives.
