Critters on Clothing, Can Eddie Bauer Come Back? And That Big Soap Opera Shocker

Hello-hello, welcome to another crazy day at The Prepatorium.

Business commitments mandate brevity today (it is turning into “one of those weeks”), so we jump right in with a story about something near and dear to many prep hearts, embroidered critters on everything from clothing to key fobs.

“Not all critters are created equal: Dogs and waterfowl are popular, but cats barely make it onto the radar — at least when it comes to creatures featured on the preppy clothes and accessories that seem synonymous with spring.

Below, ties from LL Bean, the blue is decorated with a deer and the moss green is adorned with a trout.

The story is by Samantha Critchell, it has run in a number of papers already; here is a link to the piece in the Fall River Herald News.

“You also can’t go wrong with a whale or crab; girls love their ponies and butterflies; and boys have a thing for sharks.”

LL Bean design director Jim Hauptman shares his expertise in the article:
“Brown and black bears, however, which would seem natural for an outdoorsy brand, are tough because the embroidery can only get down to a certain level of detail. “Bears end up looking like blobs,” Hauptman said. A panda is the exception to the bear rule because of its definitive coloring, he adds.”
Below, our custom Key Fobs showcase some of the themes discussed in the story. (Still one of life’s all-time great bargains at only $6.)

Shep Murray from Vineyard Vines is also quoted in the story:
“Color can’t be underestimated, said Shep Murray. Brights draw in critter fans, while traditional colors, such as navy, khaki and white, suit those less adventurous.“We find if we put a fish — on khaki shorts with the simple outline of a navy fish — most guys will wear it. You can get those people a little less likely to wear a critter to wear it if you don’t color it so brightly,” he said, “but the guy who is a ‘total prep’ wants it pink and green.”
A pair of men’s Embroidered Whales Club shorts offered at VV.
Mr. Murry talks about the company’s new Kentucky Derby collection in the story, explaining customers will be seeing a lot of horses this spring. Below, a belt from that collection.
Brooks Brothers is also offering whales this spring in the Clark pants, the Seersucker Capris are available for the ladies, embroidered with lemons.

Four-legged family members demand equal-opportunity when it comes to personal adornment:

Courtesy Tilly T. Bulldog

Tilly enjoys stepping out in her harness from the Princess; Scooter-the-Wonder-Cat was happy when we read her this next part of the story, sharing Mr. Murray’s opinion :

“He said he’s going to revisit cats at some point since he personally is a cat person, but, again, it’s the issue of shape and color.

We’re proud that our vendor for critter ribbon belts, key fobs and pet collar/leashes does an outstanding job. Below, just a few of the offerings demonstrating the attention to detail in the designs:

Can you tell a book by its critters, so to speak?

“Regionally, New Englanders are partial to golden retrievers, boats and bluefish, while Floridians prefer flamingoes, marlins, sailfish and palm trees, Ian Murray said. Midwesterners like anything that reminds them of a vacation, he added, so the beach motifs do well there.”

The article is very well done, to read it in its entirety, click here. We are curious, do you wear embroidered clothing or accessories? What’s your favorite critter?

Next, a very quick update on what some refer to as a heritage brand, Eddie Bauer.  In today’s Women’s Wear Daily there is an interesting story about the company:

“Eddie Bauer invented the down-filled jacket, outfitted the first American ascent of Mount Everest and even patented the badminton shuttlecock — and the 91-year-old company that bears his name wants consumers to know that.”

An image from the spring catalog.

Eddie Bauer

Eddie Bauer faces a challenging environment, it is recovering from not just one, but two bankruptcies since 2003. Getting those of us once fond of the brand back into a store will be even more daunting.  For both The Consort and yours truly, this is a case of feeling like the brand left us, we didn’t leave the brand.

Below, a look at one of the newly reformatted stores.

Courtesy Eddie Bauer via WWD.com

Reclaiming lost customers while also growing new fans is a key part of the company’s strategy moving forward.

Courtesy Eddie Bauer via WWD.com

It is unlikely we will go out of our way to shop at Bauer, but knowing how hard the company is working at re-invigorating the brand, we may peek inside a store.

We leave you with a bombshell.  In fact, a personal admonishment to TQM: please seat thyself before reading further, lest you tip over from the shock.

Are we ready?

ABC cancels ‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life to Live,’ replaces soaps with lifestyle shows

Or, as our neighbor to the north put it

ABC Cancels Soap Operas, Hates Us All

The headline immediately above is from Macleans, here is more from that story:

“Okay, the news that ABC is canceling One Life To Live and All My Children is not a stunning surprise. It’s been a nearly-confirmed rumour for a few weeks. But look what they’re replacing them with:

ABC will debut two new daytime programs this fall and winter: “The Chew,” a program about food news and trends, and “The Revolution,” about health and lifestyle transformations.

That’s just cold.”

One Life to Live has been on the air 43 years, All My Children for 41 years.

Good bye Erica. Goodbye Pine Valley.

The Princess Gets Back to Basics

Happy-Happy almost-weekend everybody! Here at the Prepatorium we finally have something resembling normal temperatures: we might hit 75 degrees today. Calm yourselves, it has not yet happened, it is merely a prediction made by the Weatherologists on teewee, so there’s just an itty-bitty chance they could be wrong.

Regular readers are aware we feel strongly about the virtues of basics upon which one can construct a meaningful existence: basic decency towards others, basic recipes, basic apparel and accessories.

One such elementary item is a simple watch on a classic ribbon band.  Today we bring you a new entrant to this sector of the market:

Bobby Jones

Bobby Jones

The new watch from Bobby Jones is just out. It has a stainless steel case and comes in two additional striped ribbon patterns, as well as a solid black ribbon for those preferring a more understated look. (TP’s father wore a plain Timex with a plain black ribbon strap as far back as she can remember.)

The movement is by Seiko, so this one isn’t just a pretty face. It is available now at the Bobby Jones Shop.

We have several other opportunities for you to make contributions to the economy, all of them fiscally-friendly, of course.  Bergdorf Goodman is having their Designer Sale with “Prices as much as 40% Off” on items like the D & G Pumps(L) and the Tory Burch Megan flat (R).

Another emporium offering substantial savings: J. Press. Their Blue Silk Herringbone jacket is an excellent investment for the MOTH (Man of the House) in your life.

Classic stalwart Banana Republic also has scads of goods with revised price points. Below, the Cotton V-Neck Sweater, now $39.99 for most colors, but only $24.99 in white.

Not to be left out, Brooks Brothers is promoting some solid discounts on Men’s merchandise for Father’s Day.

Our next company covered is assuredly not known for helping one save their pocket change; we quite respect that policy. We’re talking about Hermès.

The luxury firm has opened a seasonal store in East Hampton. The shop is located right on Main, will be open until Sept. 20, and will carry some limited edition goods.

In another SOTT (Sign of The Times), word from P&G that Max Factor cosmetics will no longer be sold in the US.

Today’s story in WWD about the planned phase-out quotes an unnamed P&G executive:

“It’s a shadow of what it once was. Domestically it’s just so competitive. They have lost considerable real estate over the years and certainly over the last two years. It’s actually long overdue.”

Because we adore The Queen (we more-than-adore our own TQM but today we speak of the one on the far side of the pond,), we thought we would close out the post with this photo, perfectly suited to be today’s Pretty in Pink.

The picture of HRH and Prince Philip dates to late May, and we think she looks faboo.

Sneak Peeks: Target Shoe & Purse Collections, Coach Poppy Line

Hello-Hello & Happy Day!

Today we start with a sneak peek at the next limited edition shoe collection for Target. These are from the Miss Trish of Capri for Target line, due in stores and online April 5. Below, the Starfish Sandals.

Courtesy Target

The collection will be available until mid-June; price points are going to be about $29.99.

And don’t forget the Felix Rey handbag line due at the Boutique on March 29! Below, a photo from the designing duo’s website; we do not expect to see this bag at Target.

This next photo is hypothetically a bag from the upcoming Target collaboration.

And thanks to the always-on-top-of-things Nitrolicious, here are a few more bags from the Felix Rey line:

Now you know, there is absolutely no way TP can breeze through the Tar-szay site without adding at least a Pretty in Pink to the mix. Or an Adventure in Argyle.  Or both.  And these little beauties seem to land somewhere in there!

We offer the Toddler Girls’ Circo® Jenna Plaid canvas shoes for your consideration.

Ladies, do we not also need these in big, grown-up girl sizes?

Women’s Wear Daily reports that Coach is debuting a new line, Poppy,” they hope will appeal to a wider demo.  We are speculating this shall either be a smash hit or utter disaster for the upscale leather goods firm.

Below we share a bag from the collection.  The. Red. Sequin. Handbag.

The poppy flower has been associated with Coach for some time, featured on different items.  The story describes the collection:

“… from a tote covered in a profusion of red sequins to “Gossip Girl”-worthy tiaras to pochettes covered in strands of gold beads.”

Here are a few of the aforementioned tiaras, although we wonder if they could possibly be headbands? Which would actually be more in keeping with Gossip Girl.

Coach Courtesy photo via WWD

Coach president Reed Krakoff is quoted throughout the story:

““It’s going to excite the existing Coach customer, as well as draw in a lot of age groups. It’s been a fun exploration of who the Coach woman can be.”

Excited? In a manner of speaking. You could say that.

And just as some lovely designs sans logos were popping up on our accessories radar, like the ever-so-wonderful Bleecker Clutch:

Coach Bleecker Clutch

Speaking of Gossip Girl and accessories, we were intrigued by this look on Leighton Meester. She and co-star Chace Crawford are seen working on the show in New York Monday.

Also spotted on the set Monday, Taylor Momsen, in a look not quite as tailored as Ms. Leighton’s.

Fans of the hit show will be pleased to know the CW Network announced yesterday it has renewed G2 for another season.

Yesterday we read a sad SOTT (Sign of the Times) over at Mom x 2 about retailer Conrad Egan closing in Florida.  Then last night TQM (the Queen Mother) called, inquiring about us being up to speed on the looming closure of Walton-Pierce.

What?!? Noooooooo!

As described in the Detroit News:

“We know what this means: another ending. More closure to days of gentlemen and ladies, fine handwriting on embossed stationery, certain conventions of class and character long associated with the Grosse Pointes.”

“The store also famously seized upon the Lilly Pulitzer-style, pink-and-green, country club look that became synonymous with Grosse Pointe matrons,…”

Ouch. This one hurts.

In an effort to end on an up note, we close with a new addition to the Preppy Princess: here is the Grosgrain Ribbon Handbag!

Just in time for spring, these are made in classic, grosgrain ribbon atop cotton canvas, a great combination available in three colorways:

ti7808fuchsia11ti7808blk1 ti7808turq1

They’re they perfect size, roomy without looking like an overnight bag, and we priced the bags in a fiscally friendly fashion. We would love to know what you think of them!

Until next time, grins & giggles and thoughts of spring!

Lilly Pulitzer Stationery Giveaway!

Hello-Hello! Did everyone enjoy their weekend?

Spring fever hit hard this weekend at the Prepatorium; not only did we see the sun, but the temperature soared to 50+ degrees. (Yes, you are correct, it really takes very little to get TP excited.)

If you have toddled over to the Preppy Princess store, you may have noticed the message sharing the news that our Lilly Pulitzer Stationery line will be here tomorrow.  All those goodies land here in just one day! Whoo-hoo! (To everyone who pre-ordered, your merchandise will be turned around immediately, on its way to you on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning!)

Lilly Pulitzer Sationery at PreppyPrincess.com

Lilly Pulitzer Stationery at PreppyPrincess.com

In honor of this it seems only proper that we share the celebration with those who keep us going when our spirits are flagging: all of you!

Above, the prize for this giveaway: Lilly’s Mix & Match Stationery set.  Everything you could need is in this outstanding set: 16 sheets of writing paper in four coordinating Lilly patterns, 12 envelopes in matching designs, 2 sheets of fun Lilly stickers, all of it contained in this decorative folio (or folder), as seen above in the photo! This is such a cool set, you will love it!

Here’s how to enter:

  1. Leave a comment to this post to be entered once.
  2. To receive a second entry in the drawing, leave another comment giving the name of your favorite Lilly stationery item for sale at the Preppy Princess store.
  3. To be entered a third time, post this giveaway on your blog or homepage, and *please* be sure to to mention this in your comment.

The drawing is one week hence, Monday, February 16 at 10am.

And of course, you can take care of all your stationery and gift needs online with our Lilly collection, now that we know it’s on its way! Not to mention gathering those fabulous party supplies!

Speaking of Lilly, have you ever visited My Blue Blazer? This delightful blog provides an interesting perspective, and in this post the topic is menswear from Lilly Pulitzer. His first critique involves the label’s navy blazer for men; he offers high praise:

“The cut of this jacket may be the most flattering you will ever see in a navy blazer.”

The blog’s author also looks at other Pulitzer classics for men, including a colorful pair of swim trunks:

“Lilly’s signature palette goes well on these Capri Trunks. The look has been copied, but there is no substitute for the original.”

For more insight, or to see the specific pieces he reviews, pop over to the blog.  How about the Gentleman in your life… does he wear Lilly?

And in our final Lilly tidbit, the Rue LaLa Lilly Pulitzer Sale just started about an hour ago, running until 11am Wednesday, the 11th.  For those not familiar with Rue LaLa, it is one of the many “members-only” online shopping sites that seemed to sprout up everywhere the last year.  Hypothetically the free membership is by invitation only; if you need an invitation, just email us at ThePreppyPrincess@mac.com

Things are going fast, so we should all exercise prudence and not become overly excited. And in the interest of full disclosure, there is some formula giving yours truly $10 off a purchase contingent upon how many people we send invites to; we don’t know the formula because we have never used it.  Not knocking these mind you, we simply have not had time to shop lately.

If all the goodies are gone at Rue LaLa, or even if they are not, we suggest heading to The Preppy Outlet, an outstanding resource with preppy treasures from many lines, all at fiscally friendly prices.

The Women’s Wear Daily‘s annual Accessories issue is out, and one of the photo features looks at accessories showcasing the French flag’s tricolor motif.  We share a few of their picks, starting with these shoes by Maloles; the brand is available online at Net-a-Porter but this particular design is not yet available.  Sniff.

The bracelet is by Erickson-Beamon a line favored by First Lady Michelle Obama, among others.  And a reminder ladies, the Erickson-Beamon for Target Collection is scheduled to hit stores next Sunday, February 15, as detailed in this post.  Below, one of the many pieces from the Target Collection:

It’s Cyber Wednesday at The Preppy Princess!

Hello everyone — we must be brief as we are helping the Consort with orders at The Preppy Princess during our big Cyber Wednesday Sale! The sale gives you 20% off the entire site!

Or our Holiday Snowman placemats.  These are all reversible so you get the value of two looks for the price of one, they are Made in the USA of 100% cotton, and they go in the washing machine and dryer! (Many consider this to be the best attribute, no dry cleaning for these upscale linens!)

Rolling Snowman PreppyPrincess.com

Of course you want to have matching napkins, also reversible in 100% cotton, Made in the USA and washing machine friendly. The solid red and green is a tad more sedate, but our preference is the whimsical red/greenstripe with a solid red or green on the other side. (You get to choose the reverse side color.)

Knowing how much most preps love their flip-flops *and* their grosgrain ribbon, the Sale offers a wonderful opportunity to buy yourself a pair, or perhaps a ribbon belt as a gift …?

Nautical Gifts and Goodies any Preppy Will Love!

Ahoy mate!

It has been some time since we really grazed all of the goodies available with a nautical theme. It is time we do so again, don’t you think? We dedicate our post to Miss Kate, who is always so very Nautical by Nature.

From Kayce Hughes, the red anchor necklace at $40.

From Stella McCartney’s Resort 2008/2009 collection, the absolutely TDF earrings. TP lusts after these, and cannot await the time the Resort collection arrives.

Thomas Iannaccone/WWD

If seeking goodies geared specifically to the holidays, the Caribbean Sea Life Ornament Set from Nautical Luxuries might wet your whistle.

Also from Nautical Luxuries, the Sailboat Needlepoint Baby Slippers that are miniature works of art. These are handmade, lined in kid leather, and sure to be the talk of the baby shower!

From Head Porter Plus, the elegance of the cotton handkerchief, although we could do without the extra logo-ing.

From another angle…

A bright and buoyant handbag from BCBG….

While planning what to pack for this winter’s Caribbean getaway, the Pegleg NYC tee for kids is a must.

Pegleg NYC

Pegleg NYC

Naturally the same style in a Trident motif is also a favorite here at the Prepatorium; both are $52.

Pegleg NYC

Pegleg NYC

Table linens with a nautical theme sometimes veer perilously close to “too cute” IOHO, (In Our Humble Opinion), a risk minimized with these.

The napkins are covered in elegant little anchors and they are 100% cotton, machine washable and best of all? They are reversible, so you get two looks for one price, $18.

One never have too much stationery, and it always makes a superb gift, especially when for the Young Miss or Master in your household. It helps get them started on the proper method for conveying a ‘Thank You,’ adding a touch of whimsy to the tortuous task.

Hope Notecards at PreppyPrincess.com

The ‘Hope Anchors‘ notecards in a red ticking stripe are an outstanding selection, as are the ‘At the Helm’ notecards. Both make an elegant style statement; they are $22 for a box of ten cards and eleven envelopes.

At the Helm at PreppyPrincess.com

The Brass Signal Flags Plaque might make a great gift for someone with a love for the sea; the Bowlines Pub Sign is on sale (*really* on sale), both at Nautical Supply Shop.

This one is similar to a tote The Princess carries: the Paul Smith Boat Plans Bucket hat at Saks.

Here is the aforementioned tote, The Hamptons bag at the Preppy Princess in both white and navy.

These are fabulous because they are so large 19″ x 13″ x 9″ wide, so there is more than enough room to carry all your goodies to the beach, or your groceries, perhaps toys to occupy the little ones while you are busy.

Best of all, these are constructed of a heavy, coated cotton canvas, so they are water-resistant. Not to worry about the spray from the water when on the boat. Below, a close-up showing the detail in the drawings and also a shot showing the generous size.

In our silly segment, here is a beach towel one might stow on board where no one will lay eyes upon it. Why? Perhaps the design, with that wretched crown up top, rather dreadful on its own merit, but the real reason one would tuck it away? You couldn’t bear having friends know you spent $260 on a towel for the boat.

A far more practical (and we are nothing if not practical here at the Prepatorium) treasure? The Anchor Repeat Foldover Notecard set by the brilliant designers at Boatman Geller. Personalization is included with this set of 25 notecards offered at $66,  and shipping is free.

In a recent post we showed jewelry by Erickson Beamon, the next jewelry designer to do a capsule collection at Target, and also favored by Michelle Obama.  Here is a little nautical treasure from the company, the Anchor Necklace, 4″ wide on a 32″ chain, so it is large. This can be yours for $258 at Blue Bee.

A few final items now, starting with the Old School placemats, $16 each, 2 for $30, or even better savings with a set of 4 running $55.  These are reversible, with the classic Lighthouse grosgrain ribbon on one side, and the definitive rep tie stripe on the other, they are also machine washable, you know we love these!

We leave you with a bit of nostalgia: a pair of vintage earrings worn by the Queen Mother, circa the 1970s.

We must fly, we are late for a luncheon. Do have splendid weekends, wherever you may be!

Pink Seersucker & Green Grosgrain Whales

Preppy Princess Pink Seersucker Placemat Closeup

Okay, I know it may be difficult for some to get excited about placemats. But even The Princess becomes almost misty-eyed over certain things. Like seersucker. And madras. (Almost never together you understand, as in being worn or carried together by the same person at the same time.) Anywho, we are ever-so-excited to share another of our new placemats.

Being absolutely addicted to pink (in addition to blue seersucker,) this is another one of our faves. Like all of our tabletop items, it’s reversible, going from the stripes to a solid pink topped off by that wonderful whale ribbon layered on top of the green grosgrain. And because we can’t ever have too much pink and green, we had coordinating napkins made, also reversible. These are just *so* Princess! Okay – we apologize for positively gushing over these and we shall cease immediately. We’re now scooting over to the site to keep working on loose ends before the launch.
