Barbie Gets a Goyard!

Hello-Hello and happy first week of March! Yippee-skippee, spring is on its way!

First off we must thank everyone who sent lovely little notes in light of our maudlin and morose post on Friday, that is more than kind of you. We are done moping and moving on to more normal bloggage here at the Prepatorium, beginning with Goyard;  it’s no secret TP loves hers, that is common knowledge.  Now Barbie is celebrating her 50th Birthday Anniversary with her own trunk from the luxury leather-goods maker.

She is also going to be sporting some new duds and accessories.

Über-cool French retailer Colette is celebrating Barbie’s big year with almost a month of special events at its store.  Special window displays, cosmetics by Stila and other goodies await shoppers in honor of the big event.

Also on display, special screen prints created from photographs that designer Karl Lagerfeld shot. A touch of Lagerfeld’s Chanel aesthetic is obvious in many of the looks. A model portrayed Ken for the photos, all of them striking.

And while not a huge Lagerfeld fan, his photos of Barbie and her beau are fun and elegant.

In other Goyard news, are we the only ones on the planet unaware that the legendary luggage-maker opened a store last year specializing in items for our four-legged family members?

The shop is located on rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré, almost directly across from the Goyard Mother Ship, so to speak. C’est magnifique, oui?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few SOTTs to share this afternoon:

  • J. Crew announced announced it eliminated almost 100 jobs from its payroll, a result of the economy
  • Nordstrom is planning on lowering its “average price” on merchandise according to a company official speaking to the Heard on the Runway blog

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of Nordstrom, on Saturday we popped in to see our oh-so-wonderful Bobbi Brown cosmetics doll, Miss Hannah, who is as sweet as they come. Whilst out and about we noticed a few things, like the remarkable diminution in inventory the store is carrying, just as they said would be the case.  And it makes perfect sense IOHO – why be forced to paw through overflowing racks stuffed so full of merchandise one can’t even get a look at the garments for sale? That became more than tedious over the last several years.

And then the most amazing sight of all occurred when we strolled over to L & T (Lord & Taylor), up on the second floor, where we were almost rammed by a woman with one of these…

Except hers had screening or mesh on the sides. You know where this is going, don’t you? Yep.

The careening pet stroller had not one, but two dogs inside.  Those who follow us on Twitter saw us describe them as weaselly little animals when we first mentioned the incident, and we stand by the description. Help The Princess understand here: why must one torment their animals by taking them to a crowded shopping mall on a Saturday?! We are more than baffled by this one, and have no problem placing it in the “It’s Just Not Done” category.  Harrumph.

On that bemused note we say ‘bye until next time!

Gossip Guys and Girls, Qee at Target

We probably should have seen this one coming, but it simply never occurred to us. Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and other Gossip Girls on magazine covers? Yes.  But Penn Badgely, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick on a cover together? (Below, Blake Lively on this month’s Cosmopolitan.)

And might we just show our fuddy-duddiness by commenting on how TQM (The Queen Mother) would never allow TP to set foot, nay, not even one toe in the house with Cosmo if the headlines were anything like those seen here. Not. Ever.

Perhaps a magazine cover should be dedicated to Ms. Lively and her ‘real-life’ sweetheart, Penn Badgely, seen walking to the Gossip Girl set last week in New York.

Ms. Lively and co-star Leighton Meester both lent their name to a very good cause, the 8th annual Stuart Weitzman Celebrity Shoe Auction; the fundraiser supports efforts to develop a new test for ovarian cancer. Below, shoes that were up for auction from Ms. Lively, then Ms. Meester. September was Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

TP is mortified we didn’t run this story previously so anyone interested in bidding could actually do so; we apologize for being a dolt. Below, Ms. Meester doing some charitable work for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation at the Armory on September 20th.

Target collaborations continue apace; this one is really very cute, at least we find it cute.  Just 2-1/2″ tall, it is a limited edition Qee, the oh-so-cute toy designer toy figure you may already be familiar with. If not, you aren’t alone, and BTW, in the process of discovering Qees we learned the proper pronunciation is “key”.

The one in the photo above as well as below are both the result of a collaboration between TOY2R and Target, and both come equipped with their optional keychain attachment. Hopefully you aren’t overly fond of the little creatures, as unfortunately you can’t have one, and neither can we.

Apparently these were made only for select Target Team Members and unless you know someone… who may know someone… who really does know someone, then it’s unlikely the little creatures will be dangling from your Birkin. (This may be heresy to some, and we do apologize for disturbing anyone’s equilibrium, but TP actually does find this a whimsical accent to a Birkin bag, although we’re not seeing it with our Longchamps or Goyard.)

And to all our fellow Americans coping with gas shortages that are being incredibly under-reported, we hear your pain. Ouch! As an FYI, Forbes has a story on it.

The scenes over the past several days in places like Nashville, Tenn., Anniston, Ala., and western North Carolina looked like file footage from 1979 – with bags over empty gas pumps and quarter-mile long lines of cars waiting to fill up at stations that hadn’t run out.

We close on an up note with word that our neighbors to the north will be able to order from Saks.com this holiday season. The retailer has finally made arrangements for shipping to Canada; it is long overdue.

The Goyard Tote Part 2

Pink Goyard bag from iauction

We have been looking around at some of the ‘sexier’ or hotter bags being carried, at least in terms of ourselves and other Prepaholics, and have become even more convinced that if forced to bypass our standard tote, the Goyard version is near the top of the list as a replacement carry.

Bill Cunningham Goyard story from NY Times

After our initial posting on the divine bag (see photo below), a wonderful little birdie told us about an interesting story in the Times from back in December of 2006, a quick glimpse at the bag’s popularity. It’s one of those fascinating “On the Street” features looking at a specific item or trend and what’s actually happening with it on the street, not what a PR firm or designer tells you is going on. Author and photographer Bill Cunningham (if you don’t read him, you really should think about looking at some of his stories, both online from the paper and also his web pieces designed specifically to air online, *very* cool) noted that the Goyard had become the most popular bag “… on luxury mile, Madison Avenue and 57th Street. Of lacquered linen and cotton, the bags don’t shout status and there are no waiting lists at Goyard…”.

Business Week Luxury Bag story - Goyard pic

After that great tip we did a little looking around and found this intriguing post from Imran Amed at BusinessofFashion.net, (*always* a great place to stop by for fabulous perspective and insight) from April of 2007 that compares the Tory Burch flat and the Goyard bag. But then there is a cautionary story, also from the Times, looking at the simply enormous problem of counterfeit bags, with part of the focus on the Goyard.

Hope this wasn’t too tedious for everyone; I can’t seem to stop myself once I get going!
