Silly for Seersucker and Tiffany at Wimbledon

Hello and happy Friday, we are more-than-ready for a weekend.

Today we merely share some Friday Fun, it seems like time to revel in a bit of frivolity, and we begin with a quick review of yesterday’s Seersucker Thursday.

J. Scott Applewhite/AP Photo

The non-partisan celebration of the summery fabric on Capitol Hill is traditionally marked every June. Above we see Senators sporting their stripes, from left to right: Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-MN, Sen. Susan Collins, R-ME, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of KY and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY.  Below we have the larger group of Senators and Representatives, temporarily looking like one big happy family (the Mansons).

We do enjoy this tradition, a bit of lighthearted fun amid the intense goings-on seems like a good idea. (And yes, we do love our seersucker here at the Prepatorium, in season.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, more Wimbledon news. As mentioned in yesterday’s post, last night was Elton John’s annual White Tie and Tiaras party, always a spot to see some serious party frocks. Below, Anne Hathaway in Prada alongside Chopard exec Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele (Chopard was an event sponsor), on the right we see Elizabeth Hurley  in Roberto Cavelli.

Also on hand for the event, actor Matthew Morrison from Glee, and Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford, both wore Dolce & Gabbana.

Several Royals made appearances, including Princess Beatrice, very elegant in Elie Saab, her mother, Sarah Ferguson, in Escada and Princess Eugenie was in Vivienne Westwood.

Another Wimbledon-related note, some readers may recall that tennis ace Maria Sharapova has a deal with Tiffany, she wears a pair of their earrings at every Grand Slam event. (Ahem.)

Glyn Kirk/AFP/Getty Images

This year at the All England Club Ms. Sharapova is wearing earrings from Tiffany’s Legacy Collection in platinum, they are described by the company as “…drop earrings… feature exquisitely faceted round brilliant diamonds. …”. (Double ‘ahem,’ your correspondent isn’t terribly fond of diamonds before the cocktail hour with the exception of those in one’s engagement and/or wedding ring. Silly Princess.)

Tiffany & Co.

If interested in this pair, they may be found here.

We leave you with a lovely reminder of this weekend’s Newport Flower Show.

Via Fairfield County Online

The primary event is on the grounds of Rosecliff, but there are activities everywhere, there is even a Facebook page for the Show.  One more picture we can’t resist sharing, these just look so pretty.

May everyone enjoy a weekend as beautiful as the plants at the Flower Show. :)

‘Pernicious Prep’ and Gossip Girls & Guys Hit the Shows

Happy Day everyone! The sun is bright & beautiful here at Intergalactic HQ for the Princess, it is just delightful!

First off, our Lilly Pulitzer Stationery Giveaway (featuring this Mix ‘n Match set) winner is Preppy Mama! We used Random.org to select the winner, congratulations to Preppy Mama!

We continue our Fashion Week coverage with the focus on those lines showing a preppy aesthetic. But before we even get to looks for fall, how about this look for right now from Boy by Band of Outsiders?! If the brand is not familiar and the name perhaps off-putting, be assured this is the women’s collection by Band of Outsiders, marked by tailored lines, flawless fabrics and attention to detail.

The Cropped Blazer with Grosgrain Binding is available online at Opening Ceremony, an outstanding retailer that did not have online shopping until this week. We are ever-so-pleased we can now graze and perhaps purchase at the website, although the majority of their wares are far too hip for TP.  They also do loads of collaborations, especially on footwear.

Last year the company collaborated with Sperry for distinctive Topsiders (Top-siders) and they are doing so again this year. In this post we talked about the line being named as “The Brand” for preppy attire by Complex.

Below, we shift to a Fall 2009 look.

In their review yesterday of the Band of Outsiders fall presentation at Fashion Week, Racked refer to it as “Pernicious Prep,” adding:

“…attendees found models posed in various tableaux vivants, all channeling naughty prep schoolboy/girl.”

Another style from the fall collection:

BTW (by the way), the shoes in the presentation were all Manolo Blahnik.  One more style below:

It was only a matter of time before we heard about Gossip Girl cast members in attendance at the shows. Chace Crawford was spotted at the Calvin Klein show; below, a look from the Men’s RTW Fall 2009 line.

Thomas Iannaccone

WWD caught up with the actor before things got underway:

“Crawford…had the day off from taping “Gossip Girl,” pleaded ignorance about fashion even though the show is so stylish. “The fashion on the show is really for women,” he said.”

The star sat next to Jared Leto.

And the folks at The Cut also queried Mr. Crawford about his reaction to the show:

“”Favorite pieces? Uh, I like the solids, the grays,” he said. “I’m not that savvy with fashion.” He added that he feels “very weird” going to fashion shows. So why was he there? “They give me great clothes.” Touché.”

The show is now such a part of fashion culture that in their Band of Outsiders review, the writer at Racked refers to a model in the presentation as sporting “…what we like to call the “Chuck Bass lewd leer”.

Some in the fashion media are speculating about the ‘dueling Gossip Girls’ at Thursday’s Proenza Schouler show. The word is that Vogue‘s guest for the show is another G2 star, actress Blake Lively while Elle magazine is hosting Leighton Meester. We aren’t exactly anticipating any spat. Honestly.

Speaking of Vogue, editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and actress/designer Sarah Jessica Parker chatted up a storm at the Alexander Wang show.

In attendance at Herve Leger, actresses Lucy Liu and Mad Men star January Jones.

Here is another shot of Ms. Jones at the Leger show, and we think she almost looks like an entirely different person:

It matters not what angle the star is shot, for she is always lovely.

Brooks Brothers is Everywhere, Lacoste Collector’s Polo, ‘Prep Rally’

Hello-Hello!

Is the holiday frenzy beginning to hit you? Here at the Prepatorium we are definitely encountering some, oh, let’s call it the Enhanced Stress Syndrome, how does that sound? A little more civilized we think than ‘bug-eyed mad,’ a favorite phrase of the Consort.  Well, to brighten your holiday, before you read the rest of today’s post remember to enter the Preppy Princess Giveaway by leaving a comment today (or on any Princess post for that matter) with a holiday wish. That’s it, and you are entered for more than $60 in goodies from the Preppy Princess!

Brooks Brothers is everywhere it seems, starting with WWD’s story on their 5th Annual fundraising party for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, held at the 5th Avenue store.  Below, Gossip Girl stars Chace Crawford and Taylor Momsen with Brooks CEO Claudio Del Vecchio.

Also, what Gossip Girl star was seen at DFW over the holiday weekend with his Brooks Brothers shopping bag nearby? As seen in the Editor’s Blog at W magazine (yes, this is the December issue featuring Blake Lively on the cover):

That is Ed Westwick with Jessica Szohr, shortly after co-star Chace Crawford left the trio to catch his plane.

The very next item in the W Editor’s Blog is “Prep Rally,” featuring an outfit comprised of preppy elements.

The pieces shown include an Elizabeth & James cotton sateen blazer from ShopBop (we believe it is called the Lizzy Jacket), as well as Cole Haan loafers and the LL Bean Cotton Sailor shirt.  The pieces are suggested as part of the blog’s Holiday Gift Guide:

“On the gift-giving front, it’s hard to go wrong with classics — especially if they’re the hip takes on preppy looks that we’ve styled together here.”

Speaking of Cole Haan, their online store continues offering an additional 30% off all Sale styles with promo code DECSALE30.

Even HuffPo (the Huffington Post, not one of TP’s regular reads) is featuring Brooks in “Girls, Not Your Father’s Brooks Brothers,” a piece by Kate Schelter.  Ms. Schelter focuses primarily on the blazers, including the Camel Hair:

Brooks Brothers Camel Hair Blazer

Ms. Schelter popped into the retailer’s 5th Avenue flagship last week and was surprised by what she found:

“… the garments themselves were hardly the tartan, granny, prudish BB I’d remembered. They were very stylish indeed.”

Here is a glance at this year’s Lacoste Visionaire Holiday Collector’s polo:

Lacoste Visionaire Collector's Polo
Lacoste Visionaire Collector’s Polo

Musician Michael Stipe of R.E.M. designed the shirt; it is available in a number of colorways. This was part of Visionaire’s 54th issue, honoring Lacoste’s 75th Anniversary, a topic covered fairly extensively by TP in this July post.

Oddly, the official title of the July post mentioned above was “J. Crew Says ‘I’m Sorry’ + Goyard/Lacoste/Visionaire Update.”  We say ‘odd’ in light of J. Crew’s struggles last week. Some readers are happy with the resolution of their shopping issues; La Belette Rouge says:

“The order I placed on Tuesday via the Internets was shipped on Friday. I imagine I will get it on Monday. My anger with them has been resolved by knowing I will be getting my Velvet ecole blazer for under $70.”

It seems from input we are receiving there are more concerned/unhappy/irate shoppers than those whose situations have been resolved in a positive manner; Miss Lisa at Very Busy Mom with 4 tells us:

And quick update on JCrew–still a mess. I was on the phone yesterday because some of my items were oddly cancelled for no reason and yes, still not shipped out.

Guess I am on the phone again :(

Ouch.

Until next time!

Lilly Jubilee Update, Scratch ‘n Sniff the Sexiest Man Alive. Seriously.

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday!

Both TP and TSU (the Spousal Unit, aka The Princess Consort) are due at a relatively high-profile volunteer/charitable function tonight, so we are going to be speedy.

By far the nicest part of opening the Preppy Princess store is meeting so many warm and wonderful people online, many of them through this goofy blog.  One of our newer friends is the way-too-cool Miss Cassoulet Cafe, and not just because she has bestowed upon us the Superior Scribbler award! Oh my! Her extraordinary stories and writing skills make it a must for TP and we are guessing you will enjoy stopping by as well.

Merci, La Cassoulet Cafe

Merci, La Cassoulet Cafe

Although Miss Cassoulet is a wonderful read, we were a little concerned by her comment following our post, A Tiffany Christmas, as it indicates she may believe us to be possessed of a fashionable perspective.  A stylish eye. An on-trend outlook.

We don’t know how to break the news that TP is not only deficient in this arena, some consider her staid (translated: bore-ing), challenged (translated: puh-thetic) and much too preppy (translated: apparel & accessories so bright they glow in the dark) style to be more than a little challenged.  So the young and chic set must pop over to Miss Cassoulet‘s Cafe and advise her on the boots.

Now, there are Award Rules attached to this lovely event:

  • Each Superior Scribbler must in turn pass The Award on to 5 Bloggy Friends.
  • Each Superior Scribbler must link to the author & the name of the blog from whom he/she has received The Award.
  • Each Superior Scribbler must display The Award on his/her blog, and link to This Post, which explains The Award.
  • Each Blogger who wins The Superior Scribbler Award must visit this post and add his/her name to the Mr. Linky List. That way, we’ll be able to keep up-to-date on everyone who receives This Prestigious Honor!
  • Each Superior Scribbler must post these rules on his/her blog

Here are six fabulous blogs we always look forward to reading, places we think you will enjoy visiting:

  • Lipstick at the Mailbox is an outstanding writer, with perspective we always appreciate;
  • Landlocked Mermaid shares wisdom, recipes and more when she isn’t doing her incredible commute!
  • We are always ready for a Piece of Coconut Cake, especially when it is the sugar-free, lo-cal and high-fun version provided by Miss Coco.
  • Witty, erudite and lots of fun describe Misadventures of a Newlywed, and she has started selling some more-than-fun goodies online!
  • Tickled Pink and Green is forever brightening our day with her preppy style tips and great reading list;
  • From tutus to the tooth fairy, Momx2 shares snippets of life we love to read.

Merci beaucoup Miss Cassoulet!

Whatever you do, don’t forget to leave a comment on something for which you are grateful so you are entered in the Great Giveaway! That’s all it takes to be entered to win *very* cool prizes from the Preppy Princess shop, like the Perfect Circle Apron with matching gloves, and a set of our Trey’s Stripes notecards, that will be personalized just for you!

Has everyone heard who People’s Sexiest Man in the Galaxy is?

Courtesy People Magazine

Courtesy People Magazine

What you may not have know about yet is People’s special scratch ‘n sniff version of the annual issue. The always-sharp Dylan Stableford at Folio Magazine asks:

“Ever wonder what Michael Phelps smells like?”

In his story about People’s scented pages he tells us:

“The magazine, which hits newsstands on Friday, includes a section dubbed “Sexy Scents” with “scratch-n-sniff” photos of Gossip Girl actor Chace Crawford Ed Westwick, film actor Taye Diggs, Law & Order star Chris Meloni and U.S. Olympic Team swimmer Michael Phelps—each of whom “describe the fragrance that makes them feel their sexiest.”

Even allowing for a rather rugged week, Mr. Westwick’s ‘scentiments’ on ‘essential oils’ are simply beyond our grasp. BTW, Mr. Phelps ranks in the Top 10.

Lance Staedler/People Magazine

If you would like to read more without us spoiling things, just click here.

NOTE: Mr. Stableford’s story refers to Chace Crawford, however, we *think* he means Ed Westwick who is prominently featured in the photos on People’s site. We are double-checking this, if anyone knows definitively, please let us know!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Please forgive us as we make an executive decision: we are revisiting our distaste for discussing or mentioning the “M word” here at the Palace. It appears the financial markets aren’t going to be self-correcting, or be corrected by outside influences for that matter, at least not in the near future. Therefore we acknowledge we have to adjust our standards and display a little more flexibility in our perspective when dealing with this issue. Indeed.

So here is an item related to one’s bank balance: this story in yesterday’s Journal discloses that despite recent interest cuts, many of the credit card companies are charging users higher rates and increased fees. From the story:

“Banks had already been tightening the screws on people with less-than-perfect credit in recent months. Now, even customers who pay their bills on time will find it more expensive to carry a balance.”

While we are extremely grateful this is not an issue for us at this point in time, we are simply staggered that the same companies who just escaped closer regulatory scrutiny and penalties are now back to their old habits.  TP recognizes that for many in these trying times; their MonsterCard is not being used for luxuries, but for life’s necessities like food, medicine, gasoline.

“The bank will also start charging a new $10 monthly service fee to some cardholders who have been carrying large balances for at least two years, while raising their monthly minimum payments…”

Are we deranged? Or is this what the companies should be doing? And remember, TP is a capitalist with a capital ‘C’, we are not opposed to growing companies and profits, but there is also a principle of ethics involved here.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For today’s Pretty in Pink we share information on the Lilly Pulitzer anniversary contest.  The Jubilee Jet Setter contest looks like loads of fun, and the Perfectly Pink passport is too cute.

Also recently added to the oh-so-improved Lilly website, the two 50th Anniversary Jubilee prints.  In both Bananarama

Bananarama

Lilly Pulitzer Bananarama

… as well as Lagoon Blooms

Lagoon Blooms

Lilly Pulitzer Lagoon Blooms

…something is hidden.  As explained on the company’s website

“We have added 50th and/or JUBILEE in every print. Just like you ‘look for the Lilly’ in every print, these JUBILEE Prints will be selling on ebay in 50 years as THE Lilly prints to have.”

Oh.  Actually, we did not toddle over to our local Lilly recently hoping to purchase something we could use, save, and sell on eBay. Honestly.

Oh well, that doesn’t detract from all the the fun things we *did* see at Lilly!

Happy weekend!

“Prep” Author’s Book About to Hit, Gossip Girls Have Fashion Week Plans!

h Happy Monday…! What an absolutely luscious Labor Day weekend it has been! But of course, that is only in the Great Midwest; naturally our thoughts and prayers and donations go south to those experiencing a far different weekend.

It wouldn’t be a complete summer if people weren’t getting all worked up about a new book. This year it seems “American Wife: A Novel” by preppy author Curtis Sittenfeld seems to be the target of increasingly heated discussions.

The high-pitched chatter is understandable. The book’s initial release is tomorrow (Tuesday, 9/2), timed perfectly to coincide with the Republican Convention. Focused on a ‘fictitious’ First Lady, the primary character’s background is strikingly similar to First Lady Laura Bush. Jan Hoffman at the NY Times condenses the pertinent details far better than TP ever could in her story about the book from:

“Set in Wisconsin rather than Texas, the novel is about Alice Blackwell, a quiet, perceptive woman who is marred and marked by extraordinary circumstance. When Alice was 17, she ran a stop sign, killing a popular high school boy. As a 31-year-old school librarian, she married the coarse, rakish, heavy-drinking son of a rich Republican family. He buys a baseball team, sobers up, is elected governor and even, for heaven’s sakes, president of the United States.”

In the Times’ actual book review, writer Michiko Kakutani also describes the similarities :

“In writing this book Ms. Sittenfeld — who wrote a 2004 Salon.com essay in which she touted Mrs. Bush as “a true role model” who “takes her responsibilities seriously” while maintaining “a life separate from her husband” — has changed just enough details to avoid accusations that she has completely plagiarized the first lady’s curriculum vitae.”

Wondering about the author’s political leanings? The review includes a condensed version, quoting from that Salon.com essay, which was entitled ‘Why I Love Laura Bush‘:

“…a staunch enough liberal that I take would-be epithets such as ‘flaming,’ ‘knee-jerk’ and ‘bleeding heart’ as compliments,” and a registered Democrat who regards Why I love Laura Bush’s policies as misguided at best “and at worst evil….”

Indeed. At issue (among other things) are the ‘steamy’ sex scenes contained within the 514 pages of American Wife, which MSNBC.com said were “too graphic to reprint.” We won’t attempt to recount the book’s many sins or assets (or a combination of both) depending upon one’s perspective.

Some may remember Ms. Sittenfeld’s other novels, including “Prep,” published in 2005 to much critical acclaim, followed by “The Man of my Dreams.” (Full disclosure: TP struggled through Prep, encountering difficulty connecting to both the characters and the storyline. Clearly we need remedial assistance on some level.)

The writer attended Groton, and graduated from Stanford University.

Should one plan to be in or near our nation’s capital on September 9 and have a desire to see Ms. Sittenfeld in person, have your social secretary pencil in Politics and Prose (Georgetown, on Connecticut at Nebraska) for 7pmish.

In the midst of the feeding frenzy over the Gossip Girls script leak

PhotO Courtey Gawker.com

Photo Courtey Gawker.com

…and no, TP is not about to reveal the contents of the ‘leaked’ script, nor where the plot goes in the fifth episode because it just wouldn’t be proper.  However, if every semblance of self-control has evaporated and one simply *must* know, then this link to Gawker.com’s story may provide the answers you seek. In honor of the new season we thought we might mention one stop we know that Gossip Girl stars Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and Taylor Momsen plan to make during Fashion Week.

Word is they’ll be going to Abigail Lorick’s show this Thursday, September 4, which makes sense as it is the clothing used for the fictitious clothing line owned by Eleanor Waldorf on the show.

Getty Images for IMG

Phot: Getty Images

This will be the first time Ms. Lorick has shown a Collection at Fashion Week. The designer, a former Ford model herself, describes her customer in part this way:

“The Lorick Lady silently speaks stories of Classical and Contemporary Charm…”

There are some wonderful looks on the Lorick website; below we show two from the Fall 2008 Collection.

One could describe pieces in the Collection as having a ‘preppy aesthetic’ if so inclined. It will be fun to see the Lorick show and then see it repeated as part of an actual episode. It was quite amazing to watch this evening’s episode with its ‘White Party’ scenes (including Tinsley Mortimer’s appearance). The party is the scene that essentially no one showed up to be in when an open casting call was held somewhere in Southampton back in June. Remember?

“We were told to come “dressed upscale and camera ready,” which had us a little nervous as to whether we’d be up to the competition — but then … there wasn’t any. The massive line of Gucci-clad teenage girls never materialized. Instead, the line maxed out at just four people (including us) and none of us were teenagers. We were amazed. How could only four people want to be on the BEST SHOW EVER?”

That is from the delightful story by Lauren Le Vine in New York Magazine about the event…. or non-event as it turned out to be.

Oh, one more quick pic (which we’ll justify by saying the show *is* about a preppy school) from the weekend, Chace Crawford at the U.S. Open, an outstanding choice for weekend relaxation.

Things quieted down here at the Prepatorium and we were able to finish reading a few magazines from the absolutely immense stacks scattered about the place. It’s awful, and we know many of you are buried under the same towering piles of Fall Fashion reads, upcoming auction catalogs from Sotheby’s and Christies, other literature, and ephemera!

Speaking of auctions, there is a rather fabulous Jewelry Auction at Sotheby’s New York in September, and while we are not in any kind of acquisition mode, browsing the catalog is always loads of fun. We were particularly intrigued by a Pearl Necklace and Bracelet lot, above left, and thought we fancied a pair of black and white diamond rings, but upon closer inspection determined they are just not Princess. If you aren’t a subscriber to the catalogs, you can almost always view them online; really a marvelous and inexpensive way to entertain oneself for an hour or two.

BTW, if one of the things you were reading of late was the Town and Country sister publication, Town and Country Travel, well, ‘late’ would be the operative word, RIP. For those not familiar with T&C Travel, (or for for those like TP who tends to lose track of it occasionally), it was a quarterly that the Hearst folks once thought might become a stand-alone magazine. Word came late last week that the most recent issue is the last, Hearst Magazines has opted to close it permanently.

That is a shame, we rather enjoyed that particular view of the world. Sigh.

‘Night.
