Fun Finds with Madras & Nautical Influences

Hello-Hello, and happy Monday.

It has been many moons since we did some virtual window-shopping, the day’s bright sun and warmer temps make us feel downright springy. Perusing spring and summer offerings online seemed a pleasant way to while away the morning while The Consort does all of the day’s work, we thought it might be fun to share just a few of the goodies we discovered. (Fair warning: today’s post carries absolutely no minimal content of substance.)

We begin with nautically-inclined items, below, LL Bean’s Casco Bay Regatta Tote (L), and Casco Bay Sailor Girl Print totes.

The Camden Embroidered Tote is a somewhat more substantial bag, with a zippered closure, available in Blue Anchors or Yellow Sailboats, as well as a whale pattern not shown here.

The nautical theme is also seen on the Camden Embroidered Daypack.

We have long been fond of a classic sailor shirt, Bean’s French Sailor’s Shirt comes in a variety of color combinations.

Our friend AgathaMChristie mentioned the fabulosity of Olive Juice clothing for her young Master & Miss of the house, we found this nautically-inspired tee there, it also comes in a variety of colors.

Summer’s heat and humidity may seem far away, but it won’t be long before the all-cotton Oceanside Sleep Shorts and a pair of Maine Isle flip-flops are just what Mother Nature requires.

The boating theme isn’t limited to our more practical purveyors, as evidenced by Oscar de La Renta’s one-piece at Saks, and Milly’s Charm Bracelet at Neimans.

Saks also has the darling Hartstrings outfit shown below left, while Florence Eiseman’s boy’s Marine Flags shortall is at Best Dressed Child, probably the single best source for infant and childrens’ sailor suits online.

Two more quick examples from BDC, both from Carriage Boutique.

If you are like us and madras makes you a little weak in the knees, we found a few possibilities. Bean offers a variety of madras bags, starting with the Leather Handled Madras tote in different sizes.

LL Bean

Madras may also be found in other styles, including this Patchwork Madras tote, but be advised it is a wee little thing, only 7″ x 7.5″.  The bag comes in two colors, the pink seen on the left and blue with Hibiscus leaves atop the patchwork fabric, not a look we are crazy about, but then, we aren’t exactly known for being fashion forward here at The Prepatorium.

There are charming belts in lovely colors at Bean, both the womens’ Seaport Seersucker Belts (L) and Seaport Plaid Belts (R) come in different colorways.

Staying with a nautical theme, the mens’ State of Maine belt is offered in both sailing and fishing designs.

If seeking additional grosgrain motifs we offer a multitude of choices here at the PP Mother Ship.

Our custom belts are available for kids, men and women, they run just $19 for children and $23 for adults.

Lands’ End carries many nautical items for the younger set, including the kids’ Sailboat Drawing and Sailboats beach towels. (We were curious about what distinguished a “kids” towel from others, these towels measure 30″ x 64″, while adult towels are 39″ x 78″.)

Lands’ End also has some enticing madras possibilities.  We begin with something for the MOTH (Man of the House), perhaps the Mens’ Bermuda Shorts will do.

For your little Princess, Lands’ End offers the Girls’ Washed A-line skirt in many different colors and patterns.

For the young MOTH, the Boys’ Long Sleeve Madras shirt is an option, as are the Boys’ Madras Shorts.

And despite our loathing of the logos at Polo Ralph Lauren, the company does madras well. Below left, the men’s Vaughn Sneaker, on the right, the Boys’ Blake Shirt.

The girl’s Madras Bucket Hat and boy’s Kensington Shortall are also cute.

One of the more intriguing items we saw at PRL is the pink madras Sandal & Bear Set for newborns. (It comes in gift packaging, making it an ideal shower present for those not bothered by someone else’s initials on their child’s footwear.)

Ralph Lauren

On that fun image we say goodbye until next time, may your Monday be marvelous.

J. Crew Thrashed, & We’re Mad for Madras… With Rope

It really should be a One-Topic Tuesday here at the Prepatorium, we have too many multiple commitments this afternoon and evening and should limit our time here with you, but there is more than one topic to share, so we shall hurry our way through these items.

Some readers may recall our post sharing news that Bergdorf Goodman was opening a Children’s Department, Little bg; it is now open.

For loads of fun photos showcasing the new department, pop in to the Stylish Tot.

We continue seizing any, and every opportunity to showcase footwear for the tiny preps in your life, it is all simply too precious to resist. Little bg doesn’t disappoint in this arena, and we also adore the Watermelon Seersucker Dress by Florence Eiseman, today’s Pretty in Pink.

Bergdorf Goodman

Readers may remember our post mentioning that J. Crew was going to be made available for purchase on a global level; the company made a deal with online retailer Net-a-Porter to distribute its merchandise.  The UK’s Daily Mail did a story yesterday reviewing several pieces from J. Crew’s current offerings; all was not sweetness and light. Things started out in a fun way:

“If J Crew were a woman, she would know how to bake cupcakes, and prefer the bedroom to the boardroom. I can see SATC’s Charlotte in J Crew, but none of the others.

I would also say it’s a teensy bit like Boden – worn by outdoorsy mums who like picnics and boats and labradors -but not as wholesome, or as remotely affordable.”

Writer Liz Jones focuses on several key pieces, including this tee shown in the article. The caption in the paper reads: “Too flimsy: The J crew T-shirt, £32“.

The Daily Mail

We are guessing the story is referencing Crew’s Softspun Cotton Pocket Tee ($32.50 USD), but we could be mistaken.  The tee is described this way in the story:
“J Crew’s has a scooped neck, which I hate, and although the neon colours are pretty, the fabric is far too flimsy. I can imagine very few women who would not feel self-conscious and exposed in it.”

To be fair, American tee-shirts as a whole are thrashed in the story.  The retailer’s Tiered Brique Skirt is also written off as “just awful”. Below left we show the image from the story and on the right, the skirt as seen on the US website.
Ms. Jones speaks highly of Crew’s military jacket, a pencil skirt, and a striped sack dress. The writer is also fond of the Crewcuts line:
“The bad news is that there is, as yet, no childrenswear available here – which is a shame because it’s so fabulous it almost makes me want to go through childbirth.”
But then we get to an unnamed party frock:  .
“There’s a J Crew dress that looks fabulous in photographs, but don’t be deceived. The embellishment is too heavy for the fabric, and the horizontal stripes make even the slimmest woman look wide.

I asked a friend to guess the price, and she said £60. In fact it’s £458….”

Also shown in the story, this gown.

Above we show the Delphinia gown ($350 USD) as seen in the story (L) and on the J. Crew website. The caption in the Mail’s story reads: “The maxi dress: £230 but looks cheap“.

A few Bits and Bytes:

  • Liberty of London will be doing a menswear line, the 200-piece collection is slated for launch next spring
  • Baltimore Ravens’ football star Michael Oher and his adoptive family, the Touhy’s (the Blind Side), will be featured in this Sunday’s edition of Extreme Home Makeover. Additionally, Mr. Oher is going to be doing his own book, “”I Beat the Odds: My Amazing Journey from Foster Care to the NFL and Beyond,”due out next February

We are just delighted to share a few goodies new to the shop, beginning with an addition to the Kiel James Patrick for the Preppy Princess Collection.

KJP for the Preppy Princess Collection

This is our new KJP Madras and Rope headband, designed by Kiel and made exclusively for us, absolutely one of our fave items from this talented young man.

We were especially tickled that Kiel made time to design this (and a few other new treasures not yet on the site), as he is smack in the middle of creating his new Collegiate Collection, soon to be available at the Harvard Coop and Dartmouth Bookstore.

Courtesy Kiel James Patrick

We are guessing these will fly out of both stores. At the speed of light.

In addition to the new KJP Collegiate Collection, we are ever-so-excited to be assisting the designer extraordinaire with a new product launch in the next month!

Until then we are only able to share this image. Sigh.

May your afternoon and evening be simply fabulous!

New Thakoon Line, Preppy on Sale: Brooks Brothers, Hickey Freeman, LL Bean, More

The fashion comet known as Thakoon (formally Thakoon Panichgul) continues to fly high with word he is launching a new line, “Thakoon Addition.”  As seen in the WWD story:

“… a new capsule collection… a supplementary line with May-June and November-December deliveries, which will be inspired by some of the designer’s most popular designs, and sit alongside the main collection. The suggested retail price points for the line will range from about $495 for a top to $825 for dresses.”

This is not connected with the Thakoon for Target Resort collection, now slated to hit stores December 28.  The previous release date was December 25, an absolutely absurd day to launch the line; the 28th is far more reasonable.  Below, one of the looks from that group.

Courtesy Thakoon

The News-Observer (Raleigh-Durham) makes some intriguing observations on the upcoming Target collection:

“His look for Target is J. Crew meets Anthropologie, with a heavy-handed mix of stripes and florals — a look that’s expected to be big for spring. He was generous in using colors traditionally found at J. Crew — where he was once a merchandiser — including canary yellow, Kelly green and navy.”

The writer, Samantha Smith, is always a great read; she also does an excellent blog. It appears fashionistas will see the designer’s work at Target long before knowing if he is doing any Inaugural Day fashions for Michelle Obama, or even Sasha or Malia.

In our ‘Preppy on Sale’ update, Brooks Brothers has substantial inventory in their online Clearance section, including most Handbags and Shoes at 70% off.  They are also doing their Golden Fleece Foundation through tomorrow (Thursday, 12.12.08) night.

Shoppers using their Brooks Brothers Platinum MonsterCard MasterCard or  Brooks card will receive a 25% discount on their purchases; those using any other form of payment enjoy a %15 savings.  2% of net sales will be donated to Golden Fleece Foundation which supports charities like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Miss Nautical by Nature, we couldn’t help ourselves – the moment we spotted this we thought of you:

Brooks Brothers Nautical Scarf

Although truth be known, we aren’t seeing this on you.  If anyone finds it appealing,  Brooks has the Nautical Scarf marked down 50%, now $114 from $228.

Banana Republic says they have added new items to their sale; we found the Striped Peacoat Sweater appealing, now $119 from $175.  It looks like it could have a very high snuggle factor.

Banana Republic

LL Bean has added lots of new inventory to their sale and they are also discounting a number of outerwear styles.

LL Bean

LL Bean

Their offer of a $10 Bean gift card with a $50 purchase continues through Dec. 24.

LL Bean

Bergdorf’s is touting their sale, including three pages of Jay Strongwater markdowns.  The Tory Burch Channing Sporty Patent Flat is available in a number of sizes in both khaki and navy (left), and the Kate Spade Sassy Bow ballerina flat is also on sale.

The Penelope clutch from Kooba in either pink or black is now offered at $207, from $295; the Florence Eiseman Pleated Ribbon Dress for 3-9 Months is selling at $82 from $136 (we love the Peter Pan collar and front bow!).

J. Crew continues with what is beginning to seem like the never-ending promotion; we are reluctant to use the word ‘sale,’ as that implies a discount on specific merchandise. This is Crew’s discount predicated upon how much one spends.  J. Crew is also offering free shipping for purchases totaling $100 andmoreonline. Use promo code HOHOHO at checkout.

Hickey-Freeman continues their sale, also offer free shipping on internet orders of $100+, with the code GSHOL. The Boy’s Navy Pinstripe is $148.50 from $195, as is the Donegal tweed.  Both are the Madison model, and at these prices one can’t go wrong.

Hickey-Freeman’s younger, trendier Hickey merchandise also provides significant discounts right now, like the Striped Crew sweater at $82 from $248.

Hart Schafner Marx is in the midst of their Semi-Annual Sale; their cotton/silk sport shirts are $40.50 from $135, absolutely heavenly to the touch.

We are surprised to see they have removed the little promotional box about President-elect Obama from their home page. This is the brand doing the tuxedo for the Inaugural festivities, and they have also done several suits Mr. Obama wears frequently.

And the upscale Bobby Jones line has some very fiscally friendly bargains, items that whisper discreetly, “Take me to your closet!” Women’s Clubs are an additional 25% off, and the Argyle Cardigan in Navy is now $147, from the original selling price of $245.  Their $250 Urban Plaid Pleated Skort is now $75, available in a full range of sizes as of this writing.

The Men’s Madras Shorts are now $75 down from $125.

We close with an item dedicated to the always-wonderful Third Coast Preppy: the Times says lobster is at its lowest price in 25 years!

Andrew Scrivani for The New York Times

PHOTO: Andrew Scrivani for The New York Times

We thought everyone would appreciate that news, as well as the shopping and pricing rationale from the story’s author, Melissa A. Clark:

“I’M a sucker for a sale, the kind of shopper who tallies the amount “saved” rather than spent. My arithmetic goes like this: It makes more sense to buy the $125 cashmere sweater marked down to $95 than to pay full price for the $80 one.”

On that happy thought, until next time!

Preppy Seersucker: “Save those Bucks for the Country Club”

One of the great joys of ‘officially entering the Summer season’ is that for those of us from an era that adheres firmly to certain fashion guidelines, it’s the time of year when we get to have certain favorites walked out of the walk-in. More succinctly, we’re down with the seersucker.

Oddly enough, we’re not the only group appreciative of the fabric’s finer points. A few other establishments and members of the media have caught on as well; we thought it a good day to share some of their observations and links to their original stories should you like to peruse them at your leisure.

We start with The WSJ’s ‘Ask Teri’ feature from last Thursday, the 22nd, in which a college student wonders what is appropriate attire for a summer internship in Washington, D.C. With a little help from a friend, Michael Macko, men’s fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue, here is a portion of the response:

“Why not consider today’s more urbane take on seersucker, as in black-and-white or dark-gray-and-white seersucker suits?”

“Save your white oxford bucks or white loafers — without socks — for the country club.”

We’ll move on to this month’s issue of GQ with its snappy feature entitled “An American in Shanghai” and the subhead, ‘In the old city of China’s most booming metropolis, nothing catches the eye like an expat in a new-look seersucker suit.” There is an online slide show that you can start or stop at your pleasure with outstanding photos by Peggy Sirota of some great… and not-so-great seersucker suits. A few fashion tips are provided, such as ‘Know your Seersucker’ and the reader is advised that seersucker doesn’t need to be splashy. (Really? Noooooo! But we generally prefer ours to be splashy.) The first is this Polo by Ralph Lauren; the shirt, tie and pocket square are also Polo by Ralph Lauren.

Polo by Ralph Lauren Seersucker Suit GQ Gentleman\'s Quarterly

A higher contrast stripe is shown in the next suit, Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers with a shirt also by Black Fleece and tie by Banana Republic.

Seersucker Suit Black Fleece by Brooks Borthers GQ Feature

Before we move completely away from GQ/Men’s Style, they have another feature on ‘Building Your Perfect Wardrobe for Spring/Summer ’08‘ and they show the following, another Polo by Ralph Lauren seersucker suit, this time with a Gap shirt and tie/pocket square duo from Robert Talbott.

Polo Ralph Lauren suit seersucker

Of course, we know it isn’t all about suits and it most definitely is *not* all about menswear. How about these simply divine blue Seersucker Golf Club Head Covers from the good folks at Club Contessa.

Seersucker Golf Club Head Covers Contessa

Or the absolutely sweet Gingham Checked seersucker striped dress for your little girl, complete with pink grosgrain ribbon? This treasure can be found at Kule, a delightful little shop online from Nikki Kule; you can even host or attend a trunk show if you want to see the goodies in person. (And who wouldn’t want to from looking at them online!)

Pink Check Seersucker Dress at Kule with Pink Grosgrain Ribbon

Or this precious Florence Eiseman Seersucker Dress in a deep aqua stripe, for Sizes 3-9 Months, 12-24 Months, and 2T-4T. The Princess asks, how can you possibly resist, especially since it is on sale at Neimans? (I mean, look at those cute little flowers…..oh my!)

Florence Eiseman Seersucker Dress Neiman Marcus Florence Eiseman Neiman Marcus Seersucker

Of course, seersucker can also be simply outstanding for home decorating purposes, as evidenced by these Seersucker Window Panels in Pink Plaid or Aqua Plaid (actually The Princess would call these madras plaid seersucker…yes?) at everyone’s home-away-from-home, Le Boutique Tar-szhay.

Target Aqua Plaid Seersucker Curtain Panel

If you aren’t going to wear it or hang it from the walls, one location you should definitely think about for seersucker is your table. As in dining room table, breakfast bar, kitchen island, wherever one has Cook serve their oatmeal and morning papers. (Or perhaps where you give Junior his Fruit Loops and sippy cup; you get the drift.) The pink Seersucker Pod placemats from the Preppy Princess are precisely what you need to enhance your summer dining experience, or to give as a luscious gift with the coordinating napkins. (Of course they’re a Princess design! You knew that the moment you saw them!) <grin.>

And because the Times felt compelled to mention seersucker in their amazing story on the swimsuits at Parke & Ronen, we thought we should share it with you as well, just in case you missed it in Thursday’s paper. The story, part of the Times’ Critical Shopper series that TP simply adores, is entitled Swimsuits Make the Man. We must acknowledge that information was news to us. At any rate, it is a most entertaining read. If you are in need of a gentleman’s swimsuit and wanted to see a Parke and Ronen version in seersucker (and on sale!), just click here.

Orrie King for The New York Times Photo of Parke & Ronen bathing suit

Now some of you may know we spent the better portion of the last few days looking at fashions from Sex and the City as worn by Miranda (and personally styled for Book Mamma) as well a McMommy version of Charlotte’s aesthetic. We are now left with only one question: would any of the four primary characters have any seersucker apparel or accessories in their closets? If you answered in the affirmative, then it would seem you have a moral obligation to leave a comment telling us which character, and what on earth she could possibly own in seersucker? Oh, good. We so hoped you would do that.

It is clear to us there is so much more to be done on seersucker, but sadly, that shall have to wait for another day. Board meetings, flowers, Spousal Unit, Vet, just too-too much happening! But Happy, Happy Day to all! Speaking of happy and the vet, here’s one of the household who does her best to make us happy: Tilly, our little rescue bulldog about to celebrate her second anniversary with us. She asked if she might say “Hello” to Mummy’s friends; it didn’t seem right to deny her that opportunity as you know how we feel about good manners and children learning as they grow and learning by doing. (Of course the vet believes Miss Tilly is fairly ancient as English Bulldogs go, but as we always say, it is never to late to learn good manners.)

The Lilly Tee is sweet, and the toddler Hot Pink/Green Terry Hooded Cosette Cover Up is very popular, so grab it while you can. The pink and green girls Simona Tunic is also fun (is there a Mommy size, puh-leeze?), but the big Summer Fun winner this week is positively the girls Beach Club Blue 2008 Novelty Skirt with the whale applique. Does Lilly Pulitzer ever run out of cool prints and fabulous goodies?
