Hermès & Cartier Do the Discount Dance Again

Hello-Hello!

We have an interesting topic today, the appearance of very high-end luxury goods (yes, some things are more “luxurious” than others) on discount sites. Today’s Luxury Daily carries an interesting story about merchandise from Hermès, Cartier and Botkier being sold on discounter Bluefly’s site.

Below we see two Cartier scarves from Bluefly, “retail value $220, Bluefly price $154, you save 30%!”

Via Bluefly

Really?

This is not an entirely new phenomenon. In fact, a June 2009 post in this very space was titled “Tiffany & Cartier for Sale at…Bluefly?!” In most instances, these were limited-time and/or “invitation only’ events; the ad seen below is for one such promotion offering Cartier watches.  But from what we can gather, it seems this may become a standard practice moving forward.

Via Bluefly.com

Hermès has been offered previously at Bluefly, and just last week it was sold at Rue Lala.  Your trusty scribe finds the practice disconcerting, especially following month after month after month of record-breaking sales and profits for Hermès, landing this one in the “Help Me Understand” category.  Why do it? Are you introducing products to customers not previously exposed to the brand? If so, are they really customers you want to acquire?

Now, will you be able to purchase the custom scarf sold only at the remodeled flagship store on Bluefly (below)? Of course not.

Hermès

But is this how Hermès wants its storied image to be marketed? From a Sale Bite post last week: “Hermés + Hanky Panky at Rue La La”:

Via SaleBite

From the story in Luxury Daily:

“… if consumers notice that a brand is lowering its standards so that more people can buy it, it could take away from the brand’s prestige.”

How would you prefer your image be perceived? Oozing the understated elegance and refined vision showcased in the Madison Avenue store?

Or as a bargain hawker at Bluefly?

Bluefly.com

The argument that prices for these goods are so high it can’t possibly hurt the brand are wrong.  From Rachel Lamb’s story:

““You can’t really go back to charging full price once you have a discount,” Ms. Ries said. “Sometimes, it’s as addictive for the company as much as for the consumer.”

Is this up there with discovering our Orrefors crystal or Movado watch at CostCo?  Hardly. It far transcends that little hissy fit disturbance, for we rank Cartier and Hermès in the upper tier of the luxury scale.  This seems like a bad idea all around.

One more tidbit today, also about a storied company, Haspel, the go-to brand for seersucker.

Haspel via Neiman Marcus

The Neiman Marcus blog recently had a story on the firm, and it makes for a good read, we liked this story about the founder demonstrating the value and wearability of the fabric:

“…wore his Haspel suit into the Atlantic Ocean during a trade show conference.  He then walked up onto the beach, took off his clothes (wearing his boxers, thank goodness), and hung up his suit to dry.  Later that evening, he took that same suit, put it on again, and wore it to the evening’s party.  Needless to say, he made his point.”

The other fascinating part of the post involved this:

We had nary a clue Haspel did madras. That is news we are happy to hear!

G’bye until next time. 🙂

The Apocalypse is Upon Us: Crane & Co. for Walmart.

Hello-Hello, we hope everyone enjoyed a restful and restorative weekend. We were blessed by visiting family members for a few days and things went off without a hitch, notwithstanding the charred and blackened somewhat overcooked Pecan Pie, mandating a panicked switch to Plan B (homemade ice cream) for dessert.

The holiday season is off and running, and things are simply insane here at The Prepatorium, so today’s post is mercifully brief. Sadly, it begins with rather astonishing news. In fact, some readers may find it best to be seated before reading on.  All set?

Crane & Co. is doing paper goods for Walmart.

This is not one of our forays into la-la land, nor have we made an early dip into the eggnog. The storied stationer will be creating cards for the discount chain; for more, we go to this article:

“We recognize that although we have a very successful card line under the Crane & Co. brand, we were really selling cards only in a very small distribution channel.”

The line will be called “Perfectly Said,” and Crane is working with powerhouse American Greetings on the collection. Back to that Gifts & Decorative Accessories story, quoting Crane’s manager for new business, Ann Usher:

“… we’re missing a huge part of the greeting card market. […] We really wanted to expand the reach of our business in the greeting card category […]”

Perhaps some markets are meant to be missed.

For readers unfamiliar with American Greetings, the firm makes Papyrus, Carlton Cards and Gibson, among other wares. Here is a portion about one of the company’s newest products from a November news release:

American Greetings Introduces Whoopee Cushion Greeting Card

“Each card in the collection is an actual whoopee cushion that can be signed and sent in an accompanying envelope. As innovative as it is old-fashioned, IT’S A GAS! is the perfect way to celebrate any birthday.”

Really? The people who made our wedding invitations are in partnership with a company making cards celebrating flatulence?  (We do apologize, it is all more-than-vulgar, but how else to explain our abject despondency at the news?) Maybe Tiffany can do a line for Target, or the local Piggly-Wiggly can carry Cartier.

We first learned of the partnership last Wednesday, but found the news so dreary that waiting until after the holiday seemed in order.

Image Use not Authorized by Crane or Walmart

To quote The Consort, it appears to be a good business decision in the short term, not a wise judgment call for the long haul.

Excuse us while we procure some arsenic. “Bitter, party of one?”

If thinking about another purveyor, we can recommend Thornwillow. The company has been around forever, and we have always liked their approach to paper, as well as life. Here is a snippet from the company’s most recent blog post, just before Thanksgiving:

“…the powerful importance of saying Thank You — of saying thank you for the accidental luck into which we sometimes step for no clear reason at all, the thoughtfulness of friends, the unexpected generosity of a colleague, and the kindnesses of strangers on which most of us try very hard not to be dependent.

Showing one’s thanks for the good fortunes that have landed on us is not just a pragmatic way to make friends and influence people; it is very simply essential to being a decent member of society.  It separates the troglodytes from the civil.”

All is not lost. We remain optimistic that some traditions continue:

Tonight Rockefeller Center will be aglow.

And Rudolph returns.

We plan to be parked in front of the television at 8pm EST on CBS.

Until next time, may Rudolph light up your corner of the globe!

Your Vote is Needed, and a Preppy Mish-Mash

Hello-Hello and happy sunny, breezy, blue-sky-kind-of-day!

We spent the morning away from the Prepatorium and are racing to catch up, so we shall primarily offer what we believe to be called ‘eye candy’ in our little post today. (Do tell us if this usage is improper.)

Because we know you frequently awaken in the middle of the night, unable to sleep because of your concern about the Hope Diamond and how it is faring, we bring you an update:

The company that originally donated the diamond to the Smithsonian, Harry Winston, is going to be resetting the famous (and many believe cursed) stone.  There are several design options under consideration, including this:

As well as this….

The Smithsonian is saying, “The Fate of the Hope Diamond is in your hands.”

How can that be? The ultimate decision on which new design Harry Winston will use for resetting the stone is open to a public vote; here is the third design you may select:

Next, a little retail news with word that Fornash has opened their new store at Tysons!

Simply one more reason to visit that corner of the globe when in the area. We have long favored the Gecko Bangles from Fornash:

BR-GEC-TRICOLOR (1)

In other retail news, J. Crew is promoting their Long-Live Summer Sale.

We haven’t perused the offerings, but do have one thought to share: if it is at all possible to hold off on purchases, we’re betting Crew does the “Take an extra 20% off sale prices” promotion sometime around the approaching holiday weekend. We have nary a clue other than past experience.

Next, how is this for an Adventure in Argyle?

If seeking a little Pretty in Pink for your four-legged friends and family members:

Yes, it is the Preppy Puppy Tank from PetCo, described thusly:

“…A cute and sassy tank top that goes anywhere…”

Silly Tilly would like to be “sassy” but sadly (ahem), is a little rotund for such apparel.

We close with a look at Gossip Girl’s ‘Chuck and Blair,’ from ads running in this month’s NYLON Korea.

The ads are actually for ASK clothing (we’re not linking to the site as Google warns it may harm one’s computer), and feature Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick.

Preppy Sales & Cartier Polo

Hello-Hello!

As general mayhem continues here at the Prepatorium we remain grateful for our sunny summer skies, while harboring hopes our preppy pals in Texas and California receive some desperately needed rain.

We begin with a few reminders in our Sales and Savings category, beginning with one that is new to us, compliments of a brilliant blogging friend, Preppy in New England. Gaze upon the remarkable Lobsterland Collection at Stonewall Kitchen.

'Lobsterland' at Stonewall Kitchen

Additionally, Brooks Brothers, J. Crew, Talbots, Tory Burch and a host of other preppish stores continue with their sales/promotions/clearance/discounts/etc.

In our “Recent Activities of the Royalty” category we share a few pictures from Cartier International Polo Day 2009 at Guards Polo Club this past Sunday. First, HRH, Prince Charles in the royal box.

We thought the Prince was having a rather good tie day.

The event is a highlight of the social season; our next photo features Chloe Delevigne and Alexander Spencer Churchill.

Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio was in attendance as well, accompanying ‘Pussycat Doll’ Ashley Roberts. (Rumor has it the handsome actor is now dating Ms. Roberts. Gasp.)

For those interested in the sporting event being held on the field, Argentina ultimately bested the English team, 12-5.

One of the many cultural phenomenon with which we are not familiar is the wildly popular Twilight film and book series. Because we know some Princess readers do enjoy the dramas, we thought it a good idea to share the news that Nordstrom will be selling a line of clothing inspired by Twilight.

The new line from the retailer will also offer jewelry.

This story provides more detail on the merchandise:

“T-shirts, tank tops and sweatshirts with logos including “Team Edward” (a vampire in the series), “Team Jacob” (a werewolf in the series), and “Forks High School Phys. Ed. Dept.” The store will also sell “I Love Edward” and “I Love Jacob” necklaces and pendants.”

The collection will be available online October 1, but to see it in person at stores one will have to wait until October 15.  The newest Twilight film (New Moon) opens nationally November 20.

Are we the only walking, talking human left who hasn’t yet partaken of Twilight in any format?  Do tell, we’re simply dying to know.

With that it is sayonara for today, we’re off for our stint at the Senior Center!

Those Mad Men Are At It Again, & Yale as the ‘Gay Ivy’?

Happy Friday everyone, this has seemed like a long week, and yet we have a bit of an empty feeling as we ask ourselves, “Ummm, exactly what did you accomplish this week Missy? Hhmmm?” We’re sure we managed to provide some tangible benefits in exchange for the privilege of taking up airspace here on the Preppy Planet, we’re just not able to recall immediately what those benefits were.

Well, that’s more-than-enough of a dreary detour, let’s move on to something with no redeeming values whatsoever, a look at the news.

We start with happy news about our absolute favorite television program:

Courtesy amc-tv

Courtesy amc-tv

Mad Men has received multiple Emmy nominations: 16 in total.  Once again Jon Hamm (aka Don Draper) draws a nomination as Best Actor in a drama, and costar John Slattery is nominated as Best Supporting Actor; he plays Roger Sterling, one of the founders of 1960’s advertising agency Sterling Cooper.

USA Today had a great Q&A with Mr. Slattery on the eve of last year’s Emmy ceremony, click here. Below, a photo of both men at last year’s Emmy gala; Mr. Slattery is on the left.

Actress Elisabeth Moss is nominated for her role as Peggy, and the show itself garnered another Best Dramatic series nod; it was the big winner in this category last year. Below we see Ms. Moss between Mr. Slattery and Mr. Hamm. (Oh, to be a sandwich between those two….)

Mad Men Season 3 premieres Sunday, August 16 at 10pm EDT.  You know where we’ll be…. how about you?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now we display our ignorance for all to see and comment upon. We were well aware Tiffany was carrying handbags…

Courtesy Tiffany & Co., (NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

Courtesy Tiffany & Co., (No Longer Available)

The handbag was referred to here at the Palace as the Tiffany Tote (we chatted about it here and here), yet somehow TP missed the news that Cartier was doing bags as well.

And from the looks of the photo of Gossip Girl star Blake Lively, it would seem this is old (moldy old) news! Are we just hopelessly out of touch?

But we go back to Tiffany for a quick moment: has everyone seen the new Jean Schlumberger enamel bracelet collection?

Very, very pretty, IOHO.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next we have the growing discussion about Yale’s position as the “Gay Ivy”.  This is not a new phenomenon, but the current conversation is due in part to this month’s issue of the YAM, or Yale Alumni Magazine.

Courtesy Yale Alumni Magazine

Courtesy Yale Alumni Magazine

Again, not anything really new other than its front page status in the YAM; however, the story by the magazine’s editors’ and accompanying profiles offer insight into the history and veracity of such an appellation.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In other news that shall have no impact on our life whatsoever that somehow seemed moderately interesting nonetheless, WWD reports popular retailer Forever 21 will soon be adding home and beauty lines to their merchandise mix.

PHOTO: Shanna Ravindra

PHOTO: Shanna Ravindra

The company will be rolling out these products in their bigger stores, including the 15 former Mervyn’s store they purchased.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And a tidbit about a one-time Princess favorite, news that a buyer has been secured for bankrupt retailer Eddie Bauer.  The buyer plans to keep most of the existing 300 stores open, and also says Eddie Bauer gift cards will be honored. That at least, is good news.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with one of the cutest stuffed animals we have ever seen: the Whale Big Mouth Fun from Baby Earth.

With that darling image we say au revoir until next time, may your weekend be surorunded by summer splendor!
