The Birds, Bugs, Fish & Fowl on Your Chest + Jason Wu Targét Update

Hello-Hello, and happy middle of the week.

Today we share a story from last fall about logos on polo shirts, obviously it is a topic we have nattered on about relentlessly occasionally mentioned in this space. More from Charleston’s Gazette-Mail:

“Polo shirt” has become a standard name — like “T-shirt” or “khakis” — to describe a knit shirt.

But after recent visits to my college-age children in Alabama and Virginia, I’ve learned there’s a zoo full of animals adorning the chests of students on campuses throughout the South.

Part of the article examines the broad (growing ever-broader) variety of logos now adorning the ubiquitous shirts. The story is illustrated with this graphic, showing just some of the many icons now besmirching seen on the shirts. (In reality, some of the icons are pretty darn cute. I still prefer mine sans logo, but that fish is darling.)

W. Virginia Gazette-Mail

For those not familiar with each and every logo shown in the illustration, here is a quick rundown, beginning with Psycho Bunny (a Consort fave)…

And Eddie Bauer.

The writer, Sara Busse, brings up a little family history in the article.

My dad, far from preppy and not a golfer or a tennis player, wore the little penguin shirts (by Munsingwear) around the house on Saturdays. Now Brad Pitt wears them. Dad was cool. Go figure.

Here is a 1970s era shirt like the one Ms. Busse describes.

Vendetta Vintage

But back to the present.

Look for Southern Proper’s Labrador retriever, or Southern Point’s German shorthaired pointer. These will set you back $75 or so. If you like bigger dogs, Southern Dignity is set to launch a Great Dane-embroidered shirt just in time for Christmas.

We did not see a Great Dane on Southern Dignity’s site, perhaps we overlooked it. (Who knew so many brands started with the word Southern?!)

A brand that certainly would have fit on the list would be Loggerhead Apparel.

For a more in-depth look at the history of the shirt itself, Ivy Style offers ‘Le Crocodile: How Lacoste Became the Preppy Polo of Choice and Kyoto Maiko has a post on the topic as well.

We were familiar with most of the brands discussed in that graphic up above, but always enjoy learning about new companies.  Here is a name that was new to us, Mahi Gold, offering styles ideal for wearing “from the boat to the beach to the deck to the bar.” Below, the Seaview Shift in both aqua and pink, the Claire dress, and on the far right, the Coastline Dress.

Mahi Gold

The company was started by brother and sister Michael and Becky Gorman, we like knowing the collection is Made in the USA. Another plus – everything is crafted of soft (but durable) organic cotton with a touch of Lycra for stretch (and comfort). They even have dresses available for your little one, below we show the Seaview Shift Dress for Girls and Toddlers.

Our other item today, a reminder about Sunday’s launch of the Jason Wu for Target collection.

Jason Wu for Target

Because the much-buzzed-about collection is only being carried in ‘select stores,’ Targét has even created a a Facebook page listing stores by zip code that will carry the line.

Target’s online photos are delightful.

Last week the company celebrated with a big do, below we see Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively and Chloe Moretz in pieces from the line.

There are reports pieces from the collection are already on eBay. We aren’t even going to look, and hope to find a little something when the line is for sale this Sunday.  (For a peek at our post showing most of the collection, click here.)

A quick reminder about our Jack Rogers Giveaway, if you haven’t already entered, scoot on over and do just that, entries close at midnight on Friday.

Goodbye until next time!

Lilly’s Big Birthday Bash, Brooks Brothers New Digs

Today we share a look at Lilly Pulitzer’s 80th birthday bash, clearly the place to be this weekend for many of us who admire the iconic designer.

The event was at the Museum of Lifestyle and Fashion History, an ideal venue, the Museum has been featuring a special Lilly  exhibit.

As one would expect at such a festive occasion, there was an abundance of pink and green.

Our thanks to the always delightful Jennifer from Southern Living Preppy Style for sharing her lovely pictures, below we see her with the birthday girl.

Mary Lane was chairwoman of the event, we see her looking ever-so-chic below left, and on the right…wait a minute, I know that guy! It’s the one and only Kiel James Patrick.

Fortunately Kiel’s better half friend Sarah Vickers was also at the party, we see her below (L) with Bethany of Maryland Pink and Green (C) and Wendy of Life is Better with a Twist of Lime, isn’t that a gorgeous group?

There was also a fashion show by a company that knows its Lilly, C. Orrico.

There were also vintage styles shown, yours truly actually owns the frock on the left.

The party was clearly an enormous success, our hats are off to those who organized the gala. We also want to thank Mary Lane and Wendy of a Twist of Lime for graciously sharing their photos!

Our second topic today involves another storied prep brand, Brooks Brothers, the retailer opened its new Flatiron concept store this weekend.

Steve Eichner/Women's Wear Daily

More on the store’s different look from Women’s Wear Daily:

….represents a major departure for the retailer in terms of merchandising. While the entire apparel assortment is also found in the company’s traditional Brooks Brothers stores, it is brought together in a creative, playful way to attract its target customer: college students and young professionals.

The merchandise has an edgier appeal without detracting from the core brand.

The company is wise to broaden its customer base, more on the tactic in this post on the concept store.

Speaking of Brooks, we wanted to share the latest celebrity to step out in the company’s formal wear.

That is one very dapper frog, it turns out he wears Brooks in his new movie that opens Thanksgiving.

Is It A Snuggie Death Match? Plus, Goodbye to a Prep Classic

Hello-Hello, welcome to a new week here at the Prepatorium.

We like to believe that some time ago we established this space as a “go to” source for information on all things Snuggie.  If unfamiliar with this tedious devotion mild interest in the topic, we share a snippet from a previous post:

How did this Snuggie ‘coverage’ start? What does it have to do with anything remotely related to the Preppy Planet? Has TP gone off her meds, or just off her rocker?

Sadly, there are no answers to such deep questions, we’ve nary a clue how it all began. (In the interest of full disclosure, we must share that we do not own any of the products shown here or on other posts.)

However, it has been brought to our attention we have fallen down on the job. More specifically, there are accusations we are remiss in not sharing news of the products for pooches now being offered. In an effort to catch up we show the Leopard Nesting Nook and a distinctive Buffalo Plaid Coat.

Snuggie

Tilly was troubled by our tardiness in reporting on these.

Perhaps an even bigger gaffe is in the fact we haven’t shared the addition of some very fashion forward prints that are now available, especially since several match and/or coordinate with oodles of preppy products. For example, why not pair your Skull and Crossbones Snuggie with these coasters by Smathers & Branson? You could even bundle them together as a Christmas gift for someone, think how special that would be.

Snuggie/Smathers & Branson

Ladies, admit it: if you had this Snuggie you would *so* carry it in your Brooks Brothers Buffalo Check Duffel, you can’t fool me.

Snuggie/Brooks Brothers

You might even be able to fit two into that Duffel.

Snuggie Facebook Page

Now there are even more Snuggies for all of your favorite sports teams.

Amazon.com

But this is not the end of our fleece clothing coverage. Not by a long shot. Have you heard about these? If not, say hello to the Forever Lazy suit.

Forever Lazy

We thought the names they came up with for the colors were snappy, unfortunately we didn’t have room to share “Asleep on the Job Gray” in the photo above. However, our diligent research efforts (heh-heh-heh) have paid off, you can see that gray color in the image below.

Forever Lazy

It’s a good thing we saw this photo, it reminded us that you can throw parties for all of your Forever Lazy friends and everyone will wear their favorite Forever Lazy Suit. After all, what else does one wear to a party in a parking lot?

So what sayeth you, are you pro-Snuggie or pro-Forever Lazy?

(If in need of remedial reportage on the entire topic, fear not, here are links to a few of our previous posts, including that investigative report known as “Snuggie Truth Revealed,” and the fashion forward essay contained in “That Snuggie Suit“.  After all, this is why one goes to journalism school, no?)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A word or two about Andy Rooney, who died this weekend.

Mr. Rooney was a prep, attending Albany Academy and then Colgate. But much more importantly, in a time when much of what is described as “news” on television barely passes for that, and so-called “reality tv shows” are anything but, Mr. Rooney was the real deal.

What you saw on 60 Minutes was what you got. Many of us are so familiar with his writing and delivery style that upon seeing the photo below we can almost hear him starting one of his pieces, asking in a querulous tone “Why is it that the month of February….”

CBS via TV Worth Watching

The Consort had occasion to spend time with him, and says he was as portrayed, if not more so, adding that referring to Mr. Rooney as a ‘curmudgeon’ might be sugar-coating things.  Morley Safer’s description of him as “America’s favorite grouch-in-chief” makes sense. It also makes me smile.

Brooks Brothers Already on Home Shopping Network, Hunter Boots Collaboration

What a lovely Friday we see out the windows turrets of the Prepatorium today, one can see frost on the grass moat, it’s just beautiful.

We have a few newsy-type tidbits and then a little Friday Fun to enjoy. First on today’s hit parade, news that Needless Markup Neiman Marcus has finally caved on its credit card policy. Almost 60 years ago the company started issuing its own credit cards, adding American Excess Express in the 1980s to the very short list of cards it accepted. But if you wanted to use your MonsterCard Master Card or Visa to buy a little something at the store, you were out of luck.

The Journal has the story, “Hoity-Toity to Hoi Polloi: Neiman Takes More Plastic“:

It used to be that Neiman Marcus’s glossy-page snob appeal didn’t stop at what you bought. It extended to how you paid. Cash or American Express was fine. But it was much preferred that you use your Neiman card, please.

Now, Neiman is getting less picky. Starting Nov. 1, customers at the luxury department store’s 41 locations will be able to pay using Visa and MasterCard, the plastic of the masses.

Does this mean they’ll let anyone in? (The horror.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Journal also has news of an upcoming collaboration between Hunter boots and a simply delightful company, MacKenzie-ChildsThe story looks at all of the new products being introduced by the firm, like woven furniture for the outdoors.

MacKenzie-Childs via the Wall Street Journal

Alexandra Cheney’s report also says that distinctive MacKenzie-Childs Courtly Check…

'Courtly Check' by MacKenzie-Childs

…will be seen on Hunter wellies next spring.

Hunter 'Original' Tall boots

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have an update to yesterday’s story about Brooks Brothers being sold at home shopping network Shop NBC.  In yesterday’s post we shared words that the preppy retailer would be offering goods on Shop NBC starting November 11. It turns out a very limited range of goods is already available.

Shop NBC

It seems there may be some savings for those purchasing at Shop NBC, the handbag shown above is $313 at ShopNBC while what appears to the same bag is $348 at Brooks.

Hmmm.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Our final retail note involves Tory Burch, today Women’s Wear Daily had the news Tory Burch cosmetics and perfume are in the works. From the story:

“For me, beauty was part of the plan since the beginning, especially fragrance,” said Tory Burch, chief executive officer of the brand which bears her name, of the multiyear global beauty license. The first product is expected to be a women’s scent in 2013.

Cosmetics will come later, not unlike the Tom Ford rollout, initially a scent, then lipstick, and now an entire line of color makeup items.

BTW, we are in the middle of the Tory Burch Private Sale.

Tory Burch

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And now it’s time for some seasonal Friday Fun, we begin with these cookies from the one and only Pink Martini and Pearls. Are they not gorgeous?

Pink Martinis and Pearls

A big tip of the hat to Miss PM&P, the cookies were featured in Martha Stewart’s Dreamers into Doers!

Also today, Tilly asked me to let you know that if she *was allowed* are you kidding?! to engage in some of the Halloween fun she would not be clad in the Runaway Bride costume seen in yesterday’s post. Tilly says that even though she is constantly occasionally referred to as the devil dog, she won’t be wearing this either.

English Bulldog News

Nor does she want to push the envelope by dressing as the little hellion angel she really is.

English Bulldog News

No, Tilly wants you to know she will dress appropriately. In the only proper ensemble one could expect, her pearls and fur.

Source: unknown

She may not have opposable thumbs, but she does have standards. Honestly.

A DVF Flash Mob…? Also, a Cute Menswear Move and ‘Preppy Goes Pop’

Hello, it is another gorgeous day here at the Prepatorium, bright and beautiful, the kind of day that makes one want to play hooky.

We begin with something fun, a Diane von Furstenberg flash mob. While a gaggle of women in DVF wrap dresses isn’t what comes to mind when you hear the words “flash mob,” we can promise that “It’s twue, it’s twue”!

Franck Mura via Women's Wear Daily

Those saying, “Isn’t that the Seine in the background?” win today’s gold star in geography, today’s event was staged just across the river from the Eiffel Tower.

Franck Mura via Women's Wear Daily

This afternoon’s mass dance in Paris was part of a marketing maneuver to launch the designer’s new scent, “Diane“. In addition to the perfume, body lotion, etc., there is actually a Diane Fragrance Wrap Dress.

Dance mobs have been staged in several locations, including several in the city during New York Fashion Week.

Our next item is beyond darling, and it comes from an unlikely source, a men’s clothing line. Take a look at these stickers from Gant Rugger.

Via Fashion Week Daily

Clearly peaking the Cute-o-Meter in the red zone, they were designed by a university student in Moscow, each piece represents an item in the label’s fall line.

Via Gant Rugger

The menswear firm is showcasing the stickers and men wearing the pieces depicted at its online site.

Via Gant Rugger

Gant Rugger deserves a tip of the hat, rarely do we see this level of creativity and ingenuity (not to mention risk-taking) in a marketing effort for a men’s label. No doubt the company knows how much the stickers will appeal to ladies, a savvy move considering women do much of the primary shopping for menswear.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of fall menswear, The Financial Times recently carried a fascinating piece titled Preppy Goes Pop.

Blame it on Thom Browne, whose twisted prepster went mainstream(ish) when Brooks Brothers signed him up to design their Black Fleece line, which this season offered white silk lapel tuxes with black scout shorts. But from Wall Street to Madison Avenue preppie bow-ties replaced ties, and dickies were paired unexpectedly with plaid shirts, casual waistcoats and jeans.

The story ran back in September, it focused only on menswear. From the article:

Though Michael Bastian said his collection was based on James Dean, a mid-western farmboy-turned-icon of cool, his moss green suede loafers, window pane suits and horizontal rugby stripe tops felt instead like the kind of clothes the Kennedys would have worn in Hyannis Port.

Click here to see the piece in its entirety, it makes for a good read.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We leave you today with a look at something dubbed A Preppy Hillside Palace.

Windemere Realty via Curbed.com

That is how this particular real estate listing was described by the good folks at Curbed, the site tracking neighborhood news and real estate. ((No, that isn’t a photo of our little palace. Sigh.) More from the Curbed story:

Seattle might be more commonly associated with flannel-clad grunge rockers than bow-tied blue bloods, but if this estate in the Capitol Hill neighborhood is anything to go on, there’s a more straight-laced side to the city.

To learn more about the “five-bedroom, 8.5-bath mansion…seven fireplaces, two offices, an elevator, a terraced lawn, stone patio, and dazzling water views” at the house, click here for Curbed‘s entire post.

Until next, may everything be well at your palace.

Preppy Glamour, More Bad News at Talbots

Hello-Hello, we are running amok here at The Prepatorium today, it seems there a bajillion (is that more than a Gazillion?) little tidbits with a preppish slant, so we’ll jump right in and share a few.

The first is about one of our very favorite companies, Kate Spade.  The brand has just launched its first store in London, here is how The Telegraph describes the company:

“Lady-like American brand, ‘kate spade new york’, beloved of Upper East Side ladies and Jackie O enthusiasts hits the UK with two shops in London.

As some readers may be aware, Kate Spade’s design director, Deborah Lloyd, is British.  As always, there is a delightful graphic about the opening on the company’s website.

Kate Spade

More from The Telegraph’s story.

The British consumer can’t get enough, it seems, of the grown-up preppy glamour that dominates the middle market on the American high street. Banana Republic, J Crew, Banana Republic and Tory Burch – all recent transplants to the UK from New York – have a certain aesthetic: classics with a twist, grown-up and as Lloyd says, “lady-like”.

Below we see Ms. Lloyd outside the new store in Chelsea.

Via Vogue UK

The new store is just off Sloane Square, a perfect locale for this brand. You know how much we enjoy hearing perceptions on prep style from places outside the US, this is Elle UK’s take on the brand.

“The label known for its fresh-faced, retro-preppy clothes and classic handbags started 18 years ago as a handbag line. Its bright, optimistic vision of ladylike dressing has drawn the fancy of Zooey Deschanel and Emma Roberts.”

And here is how InStyle UK’s describes the company.

Kate Spade is renowned for its ladylike handbags, vintage-style accessories and quirky but sophisticated stationery.

Kate Spade’s other London store is in Covent Garden.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, more tough news for Talbots. Women’s Wear Daily reports today that business has not improved and a key executive is gone.

Trudy Sullivan, president and chief executive officer of The Talbots Inc., today ousted the company’s chief creative officer, Michael Smaldone, and blamed “high levels of promotional and markdown activity” for second-quarter losses of $37.3 million.

As anyone shopping online or in-store knows, there has been a significant amount of merchandise marked down. Among the sale merchandise one finds things like the Luxe Sparkle Sequin Tank and the Keyhole Sleeve top.

Talbots.com

Call us crazy, but both items are well off the mark for both existing Talbots shoppers as well as the target demographic the company is trying to lure into stores.

More on the situation from Reuters.

Talbots said it plans to close about a fifth of its stores, bring in new merchandising and marketing people and rework merchandise to get customers back to its stores.

Ouch.  The Reuters story talks about closures in depth.

The company plans to close about 110 stores, including 15 to 20 consolidations, through fiscal 2013. Of this about 83 stores are expected to be closed in fiscal 2011.

As always, we hope they can dig out and return to profitability.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have something of an update to yesterday’s post about a leading retailer’s merchandise being sold on a flash sale site.  In the post we cited Brooks Brothers as an example of companies who use such sites not only to unload excess merchandise, but to get more exposure for the brand.

Lo and behold, look what I clipped from my Rue La La email last night.

Rue La La

Brooks Boys’ and Girls’ merchandise is available as part of Rue La La’s Little Rue launch, the site’s offerings for children; previously only adult apparel and accessories were carried.

Rue La La

The sale runs through tomorrow and has merchandise for both boys and girls.

Rue La La

There still seems to be a sizable amount of merchandise available, including today’s Pretty in Pink, the Pink Corduroy Down Vest is $49.90 and the Pleated Skirt is $25.90.

Brooks Brothers/Rue La La

As always, if in need of an “invite,” just click here.

With that, goodbye until next time!
