Sales & Savings and A Giveaway

Hello-Hello, and Merry Christmas Eve!

We are ever-so-excited to be spending lots of time with both sides of the family over the next week, so posts will be sparse, but that’s a good thing. We need a bit of a rest and know you do as well!

For those planning on shopping online over the next two days there are loads of Sales and Savings underway.  Brooks Brothers starts their clearance tomorrow, and is also doing an online only promotion.

J. Crew has already started their Final Sale.

There are savings at almost every preppish retailer one can name, so hopefully those interested in adding to the walk-in can do so in a more fiscally-friendly way.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now, to help tide us over the slimmer posts, we are offering a little giveaway done in tandem with the one and only Social Climber!

Social Climbers

As some readers know, Beth Dunn is an author generating some book buzz with her novel Social Climbers.  We know loads of bloggers who have read the novel, and expect to do so ourselves over the holidays. And Beth is doing a giveaway on her blog!

And in addition to the book, the lucky winner will receive a set of Lilly Pulitzer Stuck on You sticky notes….

PreppyPrincess.com

…and the a very preppy 2010 Calendar from Donovan Designs,

PreppyPrincess.com

To enter, scoot over here and say hello to Beth, she is simply delightful.

The lucky winner will be chosen Friday January 1st and announced Saturday January 2nd on Beth’s blog.

Most readers know that despite relentless occasional wanderings into discussions about commercial endeavors, we generally effort content a tad more cerebral. (The Consort is now on the floor, he laughed himself right out of his chair.) Therefore we leave you these images, because the season was never meant to be about this…

Adventures in Argyle, Preppy Sales and Savings

Hello-Hello, greetings for another week!

We have several Sales and Savings to report today; some may be repetitious but we thought they bore a second run, beginning with Brooks Brothers.

1115_11.15.main41115_11.15.main2

Brooks has taken significant markdowns on many items, including several pieces that definitely qualify as Adventures in Argyle.

The Merino Argyle Cardigan is now $117.60 ($168), and on the right we have the Cashmere Argyle cardigan, now $208.60 (originally $298).  Both seemed to be available in almost all sizes as of this writing.

816Y_DEEP-MIDNIGHT835Y_GLACIER-GREY

The Country Club Mini-Argyle crew sock is now $16 (originally $40) and the Cotton Argyle Anklet now $6 ($15); both are offered in a variety of colorways.

As The Consort has been heard to say: “You can’t go wrong with a good pair of socks from Brooks Brothers.”

Not on sale at Brooks, but definitely worthy of a mention, the St. Jude Collection, including the Brooksie ™ Bear.

The retailer is donating $5 from the sale of each bear to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There are several other items in this collection at Brooks Brothers, all with a portion of sales going to the hospital and research center.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also offering a sizable selection of Sale merchandise, Lacoste; the hat originally ($45, now $24.99) and gloves (originally $40, now $27.99) shown below definitely qualify as Pretty in Pink.

J. Crew continues their ‘holiday sale‘:

One item of note: Crew is also offering 20% off all orders of $150 or more; use promo code INSIDER at checkout. This is online only and ends Wednesday night (the 18th) at midnight.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Nautica has a solid selection of discounted merchandise in their online Sale section.  We simply adore the Girls Anchor Print Skirt is now $14.99, originally it sold at $30. We also like the Girls Signal Flag polo.

p5592125v380p5249674v380

Two things we fell in love with: the Baby Anchor Print Hoodie (now $14.99) and the Baby Dreamer Sweater Coat (now $21.99)

p5592088v380p5603860v380

The item that really sent us over the moon? The Infant Plaid Trim Onesie.

p5582419v380

If that doesn’t qualify as Prepalicious we don’t know what will; it is off the charts on the Cute-o-meter. (It is also only $9.99.)

We have an update to the Jimmy Choo for H & M post from Friday: it was bedlam at most H&M stores when the collection went on sale Saturday.  In Vancouver shoppers camped outside the store.

From a MarketWatch story:

“…the greater part of both Choo’s ladies’ and men’s collections sold out…. Even in Madrid, the epicenter of one of Europe’s most recession-battered economies, plenty of women and men could be seen toting glossy blue H&M bags Saturday afternoon.”

Below, Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg was among those shopping the H&M on Fifth this weekend.

Speaking of Gossip Girl, many of Ms. Trachtenberg’s costars were seen at last night’s private screening of ‘The Private Lives of Pippa Lee‘.

Blake Lively was at the screening, along with Keanu Reeves, Julianne Moore, Robin Wright Penn, director Rebecca Miller and Zoe Kazan.

Many of the actress’s G2 costars were also in attendance, including Chace Crawford.

It’s A Little Racy & Not At All Preppy (Gasp!)

Hello everyone, happy-almost-long-weekend!

We didn’t plan to post about tennis togs or the US Open today, but have no choice, given the stories about Rafael Nadal emanating from Flushing Meadows. The topic?

PHOTO: David Gray/Reuters

PHOTO: David Gray/Reuters

The attire worn by Mr. Nadal, more precisely, the shorts.

PHOTO: Getty Images

PHOTO: Getty Images

Evidently the NY Post reported that the shorts are “slightly see-through.”  That original story has been picked up by all manner of publications, including NY Magazine.

“A funny feeling has come over us. We can’t be sure, but we think — just maybe — it’s called suddenly caring about sports. He is life-changing, that Spaniard.”

Lord, this is a wretched job, but we shall try to soldier on.

Indeed.

+++++++++++++++++++++

Because it involves both the Open and Gossip Girl, we have a trivia question today: what G2 star is named after a brand used all the time in tennis?

4ball

In case anyone missed it, the answer would be:

Picture 43

Mr. Badgley is named after the tennis ball.  And because we haven’t yet done a Pretty in Pink today, here is something we haven’t featured, the Penn Pink Tennis balls.

penn-pink-balls

According to the website, Penn donates .15 cents of each can sold to ‘breast cancer research’. (We put that in quotes because we’re not fans of generalized statements when it comes to fundraising claims, we like very specific data points and names of organizations benefiting from the donated funds.)

Back to Gossip Girl, it seems there is a bit of chatter about an episode being shot this week; it features a 1920’s-era party, complete with flapper-style party duds.

article-1210807-064503AE000005DC-948_224x690article-1210807-064512CE000005DC-882_224x690

Above one can see actresses Hilary Duff and Blake Lively in their party frocks.

+++++++++++++++++++++

Yesterday we mentioned the J. Crew sale underway, we also want to fill everyone in on the Brook Brothers promotion.

0903d_item_0902_d_01

Unlike many other retailers doing special sales and discounts around the holiday weekend, the Brooks’ Consolidation Clearance is at its retail stores, it is not an online promotion at this point.

As we’re speaking of the Brooks’ retail stores, we are beyond tardy with this, but simply must thank John Doyle at the company’s Cleveland store. He was more than helpful when we popped in, recommending a shirt we adore, as well as some other goodies we acquired. A gentleman in the truest definition of the word, Mr. Doyle was not only first-rate in the customer-service arena, he was loads of fun and totally understands the Brooks aesthetic. What a dear man.

We’re a little underwhelmed by the online selection at Brooks Brothers, have you looked at their offerings recently? The Country Club section is headlined “Spring 2009” and seems to have negligible amounts of merchandise, and Thom Browne’s Black Fleece section seem to be equally depleted.  The Men’s Paisley Trousers are marked down by 50%, as are the Women’s Seersucker style Jacket and matching Skirt.

men-outfit-944-zoomwomen-outfit-957-zoom

Every single pair of women’s shoes on the site is discounted at least 50% from its original selling price, including the Bow Peep-Toed Pump.

Z530_BLACKThe shoes are $86.40; these originally sold at $288.

The lack of updated inventory seems odd, as Brooks appears ready to market their fall line; the company is going to emphasize those items made in America.

A recent Women’s Wear Daily story has more on the campaign:

“In a campaign entitled Makers & Merchants, the 191-year-old retailer is shining a spotlight on iconic merchandise pieces that have been made in the U.S.”

There you have it.

+++++++++++++++++++++

One last tidbit for those seeking reading for the extended weekend, Vanity Fair has an extended interview today with Mad Men’s Pete Campbell, seen to the right of Don Draper in the photo below.

Photo Courtesy amc-tv via Vanity Fair

Umm, of course we meant to say “an interview with Vincent Kartheiser who plays Pete Campbell, seen in this photo with Jon Hamm, who plays Don Draper.”

Of course we know they’re not real, honestly.

Heh-heh-heh.

Target’s Gossip Girl Line & the Rumors, A Preppy Mish-Mash

Hello-Hello everyone, welcome to our wild Wednesday. It has been insanely busy here at the Prepatorium, so we are going to be mercifully brief today!

We begin with a rapid rundown of the big to-do that isn’t, this one involving the much-discussed Anna Sui Gossip Girl line for Target due to debut September 13.

Courtesy Target

Courtesy Target

Evidently the rumor mill was peaking in the Hysteria Zone Monday with a story that the ‘rambunctious activities’ (our phrase) of the characters on Gossip Girl were so mature and non-family-friendly that Targèt was not going to move forward with the line. Clearly that would have been lunacy with merchandise this close to being shipped to stores. Honestly.

Here are a few more looks from the line.

Courtesy Target via

Courtesy Target

In fact, a Target spokesman told StyleList:

“We are moving forward as planned with the four principal leads of ‘Gossip Girl’ as our creative muses.” And added, “Unfortunately, there was misinformation passed around and we are still very excited about the collaboration.”

Courtesy Target

Courtesy Target

It seems the retailer is more than pleased by their association with the hit television show; the StyleList story also explains Target is the official sponsor of the G2 season premiere September 14, the day after the collection launches.

Next, a peek at a few of the looks on tap from Talbots for the Holiday and Resort seasons. We start with an oversized tartan plaid on the button-front dress seen below.

Courtesy The Fashion List

Talbots will also offer a rich black trench for their Resort line.

Courtesy The Fashion List

Courtesy The Fashion List

Our thanks to the folks over at the Fashion List for their insightful post on the upcoming Talbots styles, as well as thoughts on the store’s direction:

“The Holiday 2009 collection… made the case loud & clear that Talbot’s was not choosing the typical slippery slope of reduced prices (aka reduced quality) that so many companies mistakenly follow when times get tough, but rather looking at their existing customer (50+ year olds)… embarking on a mission to attract the generation before these ladies (the 35 to 50 set) & creating offerings that would give them a reason to walk through the company’s trademark red door & walk out happily…”

What are your thoughts, can Talbots regain the under-50 shopper? We believe they can garner some, but it is going to be a tough sell shedding what has become a dowdy, frumpish image.

Whilst speaking of Talbots, a quick reminder: don’t forget their Summer Sale and Clearance continues with an additional 25% off already reduced merchandise.

Also continuing their Final Sale, J. Crew, saying they have added more merchandise to the sale.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next, a look at a lush silk organza dress from the Milly Holiday Collection; while much too fun and young for this oldster, but we do find that oversized bow rather adorable.

Our thanks to Women’s Wear Daily for this image.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have a few items for our Pretty in Pink today, our first is from  with the Kate Spade Fairmount Park Jori Dress.

KateSpade.com

KateSpade.com

One reason we wanted to showcase Kate Spade is the fact they are taking an additional 40% off already reduced Sale merchandise.  This makes the cost of the dress shown above approximately $156; the original selling price was $345.

We understand if you feel the urge to flee this site and head over there, no hurt feelings whatsoever, exigent circumstances do arise in retail, and we fully understand. (Ahem.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also continuing their sale (but not with such steep discounting), Brooks Brothers.

BrooksBrothers.com

BrooksBrothers.com

The image above references the markdowns on Brooks’ Non-Iron shirts; we can attest to the fabulosity of these, the shirts really are divine. And at these prices, the opportunity to stock up on a basic is really very tempting. Even for TP. (Sssshh.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with our other Pretty in Pink item,

The Container Store

The Container Store via Pink & Green Scene

We were tipped to this treasure by the always-on-top-of-things-folks over at Pink and Green Scene, where it was mentioned in Monday’s post.

This Just In – a Quote of the Day from The Consort: “If this is ‘mercifully short’ then I’m afraid to see what painfully long would be.” Ouch. But then, he is correct. Quite so.

Until next time, may it be Prepalicious everywhere you are today!

Tennis Fashions, Serious Sales of a Prepalicious Sort

Hello everyone, it is another delightful summer day here at the Prepatorium, we hope it is the same wherever you may be today!

We begin with the tennis fashions debuting across the pond at Wimbledon. (WARNING: Readers may want to be sure small children are safely away with Nanny in case the following photo is so shocking it provokes an unwitting shriek or scream to escape one’s mouth.)

TP begs your forgiveness for distributing such wretched images, but we are sworn to report on such things, despite the trauma inflicted on our psyche.

PHOTO: Stefan Wermuth/Reuters

PHOTO: Stefan Wermuth/Reuters

For openers: Roger Federer, gold lame and Nike are five words that ought never be used together at the same time. It’s just plain wrong. Gold lame?  This is a substance best kept far away from the sporting world, with the possible exceptions of figure skating and gymnastics.

This story from the Times of London does a stellar job describing the look, invoking an Anti-Prep in the process:

“Even if the all-white uniform evaded the attention of any Taleban snipers, their gaze would surely be caught by the sun glinting off the gold ends of Federer’s luggage. That bag looked like something Paris Hilton would take to a spa. Perhaps there was a chihuahua inside.”

The jacket brought flashbacks of the Nehru collar favored in the 60’s, while the body had a distinctly military look. It gets worse, as underneath the jacket was a vest that almost looked like it belonged under a dinner jacket.

PHOTO: Stefan Wermuth/Reuters

PHOTO: Stefan Wermuth/Reuters

Fortunately the fashion disaster was quickly forgotten as play got underway and Mr. Federer readily dispensed with his first opponent.  How do we all feel about the return of last year’s Tennis Cardigan? A good alternative to this week’s look?

PHOTO: K Lamarque/Reuters

PHOTO: K Lamarque/Reuters

Also sporting an interesting jacket over their working clothes, Maria Sharapova.

PHOTO: Toby Melville/Reuters

PHOTO: Toby Melville/Reuters

Nike is also the company behind Ms. Sharapova’s dress, likened to a majorette’s costume by some. We find it more-than-attractive, especially on someone as lovely as she.  Everyone remembers 2008’s Tuxedo Dress to-do, yes? Come now, one can’t have forgotten last year’s Wimbledon Fashion Fracas already! (If visiting the link, do scroll down for the story.)

And wrapping up our Nike-clad trio of players today, Serena Williams was in a jacket reminiscent of a classic British macintosh.

We think she looks smashing.

As always with this topic, we suggest readers pop over for a visit with Rich at Down the Line Tennis for the inside story.

A quick follow-up to yesterday’s post on the Brooks Brothers Black Fleece expansion.

PHOTO: Courtesy Brooks Brothers

PHOTO: Courtesy Brooks Brothers

Above, styles by Thom Browne, the Black Fleece designer. Not only is Brooks adding two standalone Black Fleece stores, they intend to add 40 stores in Mexico.  Today’s WWD story on the expansion provides more insight on both developments.

When speaking specifically about the Black Fleece customer, Brooks CEO Claudio Del Vecchio has an interesting perspective:

“…Black Fleece customers have responded to having their own separate location, noting, “I’m not sure those customers are comfortable coming to Madison Avenue.”

We can’t imagine why. The company is also planning its first Country Club store that isn’t located at a resort; this new emporium will be in Seattle.

Oddly, the following photos are just into the Prepatorium, a look from today’s Moncler Gamme Bleu Men’s Spring 2010 Collection.

Guess the designer. Not sure?

Check the length of the pants.  Yes, indeed, it is Mr. Browne showing this collection at Milan Fashion Week, currently underway in Italy.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We move now to some fabulous Sales & Savings opportunities, beginning with the retailer mentioned above, Brooks Brothers, offering 50% off in stores with deeper discounts available online.

Next, one of our favorites, Vineyard Vines.

The markdowns include the Anchor Turtle Bay Tee, now $24.99.

There is a significant amount of merchandise still available as of this writing.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

J. Crew is also doing another of their Final Sale promotions.

J. Crew

J. Crew

Including the Boy’s Pacific Madras Blazer, originally $135, now $49.99.

We have just been advised of a late-breaking appointment, so we shall close with the Keep Company Homer shoe, in the Watermelon color combination.

May your afternoon be sunny and bright!

The Princess Gets Back to Basics

Happy-Happy almost-weekend everybody! Here at the Prepatorium we finally have something resembling normal temperatures: we might hit 75 degrees today. Calm yourselves, it has not yet happened, it is merely a prediction made by the Weatherologists on teewee, so there’s just an itty-bitty chance they could be wrong.

Regular readers are aware we feel strongly about the virtues of basics upon which one can construct a meaningful existence: basic decency towards others, basic recipes, basic apparel and accessories.

One such elementary item is a simple watch on a classic ribbon band.  Today we bring you a new entrant to this sector of the market:

Bobby Jones

Bobby Jones

The new watch from Bobby Jones is just out. It has a stainless steel case and comes in two additional striped ribbon patterns, as well as a solid black ribbon for those preferring a more understated look. (TP’s father wore a plain Timex with a plain black ribbon strap as far back as she can remember.)

51000SE50_sm51000SE48_sm

The movement is by Seiko, so this one isn’t just a pretty face. It is available now at the Bobby Jones Shop.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have several other opportunities for you to make contributions to the economy, all of them fiscally-friendly, of course.  Bergdorf Goodman is having their Designer Sale with “Prices as much as 40% Off” on items like the D & G Pumps(L) and the Tory Burch Megan flat (R).

BGX0AH0_mtBGX09SW_mh

Another emporium offering substantial savings: J. Press. Their Blue Silk Herringbone jacket is an excellent investment for the MOTH (Man of the House) in your life.

J. Press

Classic stalwart Banana Republic also has scads of goods with revised price points. Below, the Cotton V-Neck Sweater, now $39.99 for most colors, but only $24.99 in white.

Not to be left out, Brooks Brothers is promoting some solid discounts on Men’s merchandise for Father’s Day.

Our next company covered is assuredly not known for helping one save their pocket change; we quite respect that policy. We’re talking about Hermès.

The luxury firm has opened a seasonal store in East Hampton. The shop is located right on Main, will be open until Sept. 20, and will carry some limited edition goods.

In another SOTT (Sign of The Times), word from P&G that Max Factor cosmetics will no longer be sold in the US.

Today’s story in WWD about the planned phase-out quotes an unnamed P&G executive:

“It’s a shadow of what it once was. Domestically it’s just so competitive. They have lost considerable real estate over the years and certainly over the last two years. It’s actually long overdue.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Because we adore The Queen (we more-than-adore our own TQM but today we speak of the one on the far side of the pond,), we thought we would close out the post with this photo, perfectly suited to be today’s Pretty in Pink.

Help Me Understand, Lilly Pulitzer Calling Cards & Address Labels

Hello-Hello everyone! How are we all doing now that we’re approaching midweek?

Today we really aren’t covering much of anything one might consider preppy. Not really. Not unless one considers our first topic borderline preppish, only because the subject is affiliated with a certain faux-prep school television show we continually natter on about.

Okay now.  Not to sound like a crankenstein (translation: stand by for complaints peaking the Crank-o-Meter in the red zone, honestly, what a whiner), but upon seeing photos of Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester in this… ah, wearing this… well, we are clearly lacking nouns by which one could refer to such a… umm, such a garment. How’s that?

Before seeing the photos most relevant to our decision that this episode be officially classified as a “Help Me Understand,” we want to share a few other images to make the point that we find the actress to be absolutely beautiful.  And we thought Ms. Leighton looked stunning.

And perhaps even from the side… kind of, sort of, maybe.

However, these first photos don’t actually reveal the depth and breadth lacking in said garment.

WARNING: The following photos are NSFW.

PHOTO: Jason Merritt/Getty

The Garment was worn to Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards; the photos prompted PTDD (Post Taumatic Dress Disorder) flashbacks, eerily reminiscent of the Blake Lively Romper Episode.

We recognize we’re not exactly the demo sought by the MTV pooh-bahs. Nor are we anything remotely resembling hip or slick or cool or stylish, but we didn’t think we had gone over to the dark side, you know, the dreaded old fuddy-duddy part of the planet.

Is it us, dolls? Our upbringing? Our age? We implore you: help us understand.

On a side note, we are ever-so-excited this morning because we finally learned what NSFW means! The Spousal Unit explained it once he collected himself after hearing TP trying to sort it out solo. A few guesses we actually thought were possibilities before crumbling and asking for assistance:

  • Not Safe for Women
  • No Situations for Work
  • No Sly Favors Wanted
  • National Sillies from Women (?)

Please don’t laugh until we’ve left the room, we already feel utterly uncool and clueless. Sigh.

In other fashion news, word today from Wal-Mart they will be carrying a new line just in time for back to school shopping. It will be created by…

teen superstar Miley Cyrus and Max Azria, perhaps best known for his BCBG line.  This news comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement by the Disney Channel that Hannah Montana returns for Season 4 this fall.  In the photo above Ms. Cyrus is wearing pieces from the new collection.  From the Walmart snooze release news release:

“The line will arrive in all Walmart stores and on Walmart.com in early August, and includes tops, pants, graphic tees, shoes and accessories, all priced less than $20.”

In honor of today’s kickoff at the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale we’ll share one of this week’s best additions to the Princess Shoppe, the Lilly Labels and Calling Cards!

Lilly Labels/Stickers in Patchtastic

The calling cards are printed on thick card stock, very posh IOHO. There are so many fabulous designs it is impossible to select just one favorite!  We adore the navy blue and hot pink used in Cloud Nine, so much so we will dub it today’s Pretty in Pink.

CloudNinestickers

But then, we’ve always been a little crazy for Loco Patch too. (Ahem, it would appear that Silly Princess somehow got out today.)

And there are another twenty-plus divine designs on the site, there really aren’t any we don’t like. Decisions, decisions. Sigh.

Smiles dollfaces, we are way too far behind in our duties here at the Prepatarium, we must scramarama! Don’t forget to share your wisdom on The Garment issue, we have an expiring mind dying to know!
