Ralph Lauren & Brooks Brothers Expand Collections, Kennedy Mini-Series Finds a Home

Hello-Hello, happy, sunny day!

When composing the portion of yesterday’s post about the storm we presumed that would be the extent of our dealings with the matter.  Silly Princess.  The abundance of amazing images prompts just a bit more coverage, with thanks to our treasured readers for your gracious tolerance of our tedious fascination mild interest in the topic.

First, a photo from New Hampshire that gives new meaning to “Park & Ride”.

Okay, we have had enough of the folderol, we move on.

Our next item on the agenda, Brooks Brothers’ expansion of its Home Collection.

The growth of the line was noted in this story in Home Accents Today. The group now includes a broad selection of lampshades.

Brooks Brothers

Very much in keeping with the Brooks image and product line, the shades invoke visions of pinstripe suits, button downs and silk repp ties.  Below, Cotton Oxford Pleated Chandelier shades.

The Table Top category has been expanded as well; below we show a piece from the company’s partnership with the National Audubon Society, a beautiful Dessert Platter.

Brooks Brothers

In the Help Me Understand category we do have a few entrants, including the Asanoha Plate.

Brooks Brothers

The plate is more than attractive, with an appealing design. Nor do we have any quarrel with the necessity for The Consort the staff to wash the plate by hand, after all it is hand-painted. Our confusion stems from the logo; why would anyone want to display the retailer’s Golden Fleece on their dishes?

The pillow selection remains much the same as when the group was launched, the Striped Pillow collection is still very stylish.

Brooks Brothers

We spotted one addition to this group.

For our thoughts on this item, just scroll back up and re-read the Help Me Understand section.  Overall we find lots to like in the expanded line, it is a stellar representation of the brand’s classic heritage. While not personally looking for gray flannel lampshades, we do think there are many places they will be simply perfect. (If desirous of more background on the collection, click here for one of our more in-depth posts on the topic.)

Our other fashion morsel involves expansion for Ralph Lauren.  In a story about the designer’s fall preview, WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) explains:

“New this season is a distinct denim collection under the Black Label Denim moniker, as well as an expanded accessories assortment that covers shoes, leather goods and watches.

Here are some of George Chinsee’s photos that accompany the story.

Back to Jean Palmiere’s story:

“The new Black Label Denim component is designed to provide a “sexy, hip weekend look” for the customer who is comfortable in the label’s more-tailored offering. “It’s all aimed at that guy and takes him from formalwear to jeans.” Coated cargo pants and jeans with both skinny and wide legs were blended with cashmere sweaters and leather jackets.

Lauren said he decided to offer this collection after standing inside his Madison Avenue store and seeing all the women coming in to shop wearing jeans. “I realized we don’t have high-quality, high-fit denim,” he said. “So we did it for men and women. I wanted to make it a full business on a high level.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have an update on an earlier story, the highly controversial “Kennedys” mini-series, the Hollywood Reporter has more:

“The controversial miniseries will world premiere on April 3 on the ReelzChannel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.”

Via Reelz Channel

We anticipate this will start viewers scrambling as they try to sort out where the network is on their cable and satellite systems, if it is carried at all.  Click here to visit the Reelz website.

With that, goodbye until next time, we hope your day is sunny and bright!

Brooks Brothers Home Collection Launches

Hello-Hello, welcome to an almost-weekend, a delight to contemplate despite an overbooked schedule. Already.

We have a look at the Brooks Brothers Home Collection, debuting online today.

You won’t see much of the new line at your local B2, the majority of it is only available online.  New items include bed linens in two motifs; below, the Blue Yarn-Dye group.

The Glen Plaid and Pinstripe pieces are done in a 300 thread count cotton; we like this look.

The white Herringbone bedding is also made with 300-count cotton.

The Pillows may well be our favorite thing, inspired by the retailer’s neckties, they are made of a fine English silk twill.

They come in three sizes, 16″, 18″ and 20″.

In three patterns, the Jockey Stripe (L), Diagonal BB #1 Repp Stripe (M), and the Horizontal Guard Stripe (R), all available in the three colors shown.

A grouping of these will look elegant in many settings, it is good to see the pillows are Made in the USA.

Prices for the pillows run $248 – $288.

Of course, we’re rather partial to our Old School Toss pillows, they are crafted of 100% cotton, better suited to the beating they take bustling environment here at the Prepatorium.

(These don’t require quite the same investment as the silk pillows at Brooks.)

The Terry Bath Collection offers towels in a nice range of colors.

As well as a bathrobe and slippers.

This a big weekend for our friend Queen Bee Swain and rowers, it is Head of the Charles weekend in Boston. This year Brooks Brothers is one of the premier sponsors of the Regatta.

Good luck to the Bee!

Our other tidbits today are brief, the first involving J. Crew. Yesterday the company’s stock was absolutely slammed following an analyst’s downgrade. From a Business Week story:

“The shares have fallen 26 percent this year.

The retailer now has a sale on its website with some items, such as a pink dress, discounted more than 70 percent.”

Clearly analysts are concerned about the ongoing need for sales and other promotional pricing. We checked and the weekly 3-day Factory Outlet sale continues this weekend; Crew’s Fall Sale is also underway. We don’t know about the “pink dress” referenced above, but definitely noticed some deep discounting.

The Wool Dunaway Dressy on the left is $69.99, originally it sold at $158. On the right we show the Glen Plaid Peacoat, originally $278 and now just $99.99, this is *before* the additional 20% off outerwear promotion that is currently being offered.

That kind of pricing can impact the profit picture in a significant way.

The other Item of note is also related to the market, yesterday Vera Bradley became a publicly traded company, now you can own a piece of the handbag and accessories maker if so inclined.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close on a Pretty in Pink and Green note (with apologies to our FB fans who may have already seen the picture), these are just some of the totes and lunch bags we have been getting in for the holidays!

With that we say adieu until next time, we hope each and every treasured reader enjoys a simply splendid weekend!

Ralph Lauren Runway Show, Brooks Brothers Home Collection Update

Hello-Hello, we must say we are grateful for a Friday. The prospect of a slightly more sane weekend (there is no delusion so persuasive as self-delusion, is there?) holds substantial appeal.

New York Fashion Week wrapped up yesterday, now everyone heads across the pond for London Fashion Week (Burberry anyone?), those shows are already underway.

Today we peruse the Ralph Lauren spring 2011 collection. Below, the first two looks down the runway.

We are feeling more-than-a-little out of step with most reviews of the collection.

A sampling of those reviews:

  • WWD: “…Ralph Lauren showed one of his best women’s collections in memory.”
  • Eric Wilson at the Times: “…the Western motif is really where Mr. Lauren shines. You know it’s going to be a pleasing Ralph Lauren collection when the designer himself is wearing leather pants the color of a fine chestnut filly.”
  • Style.com “His latest take on cowgirl couture happens to be right in line with some of New York’s big trends.”

You can guess where this is headed.

The fringe and lace just aren’t working.

To avoid misunderstanding, in our utterly uneducated opinion we think the collection is brilliant, in both concept and execution. The issue isn’t Mr. Lauren’s design skills, it’s just that the theme for next spring’s RTW (ready to wear) isn’t one we are fond of here at the Prepatorium.

Western wear looks smashing on many women, and we sported styles with a wee bit of this influence during our seventeen years in Colorado. We still love our basic Frye boots. But faded fabrics, ruffles and fringe are not styles we generally embrace.

These will be stunning on many, hello, Miss Vogue on the Range…?

If anyone has interest in watching the entire show, it is available online at the Ralph Lauren Facebook page.

We have a brief update on the Brooks Brothers Home Collection; pieces from the new line could be spotted amid the spring 2011 apparel and accessories shown at Monday’s Fashion Week presentation (discussed at length in this post). Below, several pillows in seersucker can be seen in this image from the WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) story.

Robert Mitra/WWD

The company posted this photo on its Facebook page, the lampshades and pillow are done in Brooks Brothers repp tie stripes.

The WWD story notes the line will only be available online.

“Bedding will be available in three color combinations: blue and white, solid white and herringbone white with navy and burgundy trim. Towels are being offered in eight colors. The home line, which includes pillows and lamp shades in rep tie fabric, will launch next month.”

The Journal’s Heard on the Runway blog originally had the story on the new collection; this image accompanied that story.

Below, a grey flannel lamp shade is seen in this photo taken by Christian over at Ivy Style.

Much as we like the idea of a super-soft flannel pillow, we struggle envisioning a lampshade in this material, despite Christian’s photo. Some parts of the collection launch late this fall, with the entire group available in the spring.

A brief item of note:

J. Crew

The J. Crew online outlet opened this morning, the offerings do appear to be pieces made specifically for Crew’s Factory Outlet stores.  The smattering of comments thus far on our Facebook page, where we posted similar information, indicates a lukewarm reception to the ‘outlet’.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Our final tidbit involves Don Draper Jon Hamm, the actor announced last night he is guest-hosting Saturday Night Live for a third time. Below we see Mr. Hamm in his “The Town” role, that film opens tonight.

May everyone have an outstanding weekend!
